Youth are in crisis... Alaska consistently ranks highest across the nation in abuse against minors and teen suicide. Many young people have experienced significant loss and trauma, and need trustworthy adults to provide emotional and spiritual support to help them navigate life. CYAK exists to help youth THRIVE. The more we can reach out with our mission “to share the love and the hope of Christ with Alaska’s youth and young adults,” the more they will THRIVE in their faith and lives. I like to play with knives! When I was a teen, I learned to juggle. Maybe it appealed to me because adolescent life was confusing and complicated. Life for a young person can feel like needing to juggle but not knowing how. Changing relationships with family, relationships with friends, new responsibilities, trying to understand yourself, navigating the educational system, and figuring out your future - it’s a lot to juggle. And like juggling knives, it’s easy to get hurt in life. A single mistake or complication can feel like a disaster that will make everything fall apart. For some, juggling a precarious life seems impossible and hopeless, so they give up on it all. For those who choose to keep trying, it often feels like a bad emotional game of “Survivor.” As young people struggling through life with fears and anxieties, we need to know there is a loving God who provides safe, caring adults to walk with us and show us how to juggle life. That is why CYAK exists and what we do. We walk with kids and we teach them how to juggle. Our mission is to share the love and hope of Christ in Alaska with youth and young adults.
