The pages following will detail a step-by-step instructional guide of how to use this tool in order to service a chamber or to set-up a new EBS rationalised version to the same settings as the original unit being replaced.

Height checks of the push rod for disc brake style chambers.

This tool can be used on both disc brake chambers and cam brake chambers.

Checking the height of the push rod against both the minimum and maximum recess gauges on the EBS. BCAT tool is also necessary.

If it is the case whether you are replacing a chamber with an EBS rationalised version or simply servicing the unit it is advisable to take note of the positioning of the clamp band and the air ports of the unit being removed and replaced.

Using the recess that is marked “Check 1/2” to check the push rod against the maximum height permitted.

On the unit that has been removed take note of: - The air ports position (Angle “1”) – see image A. - The clamp band position (Angle “2”) – see image B.

If the measuring guage does not lie flat against the chamber because of the push rod interference then this has failed the check.

If the measuring guage does lie flat against the chamber and there is no push rod interference then this has passed the check.

You can now continue to the testing for minimum height permitted.

Using the recess that is marked “Check 2/2” to check the push rod against the minimum height permitted.

Now, on the newly serviced or the new EBS rationalised chamber to be fitted back onto the vehicle, take the earlier noted angles (“1” and “2”), see images C and D, from the original unit removed from the vehicle and after the re-assembly adjust the clamp band position and the air port position to those earlier recorded values.

If the push rod height is lower than that of the “OK” line marker then this has failed the check. .

If the push rod height perfectly fits, reaching the “OK” line marker, or the tool doesn’t lie flat against the chamber, then this has passed the check.

Please note: The height of the push rod is in the permitted range only when both steps 1 and 2 are passed.

Checking the height of the seal using the central recess on the EBS.BCAT tool.

The seal height should not fall below 3mm. If the height of the seal is lower that the line marker “min. thickness check 1/1” then the check has failed.

If the seal height reaches the line marker or the guage does not lie flat on the chamber because of interference with the seal then the check has passed.

Please note: If any of the above performed tests have failed then the brake chamber must be repaired using EBS branded components or replaced with a completely new unit.
