TRAILER MODULATOR - EBS- 2S/2M - REMANUFACTURED
When air is compressed, the compressor takes in water vapour with the air, compresses the water vapour & puts it into the system as liquid water. Any water that accumulates in the vehicles air lines damages seals, valves & removes lubricants. In cold weather it can freeze blocking air lines & damaging air system components. The Air Dryer protects the vehicles air systems & components from this by drying the air passing through the air tanks and into the system via the desiccant cartridge. A coalescing cartridge has additional material to trap oil & aerosol particles. Water is then removed from the desiccant via a back flow of dried expanded air.

Brake chambers are used on truck and trailer air brake systems, located at each wheel, where compressed air is converted into a mechanical force used to apply the brakes and stop the vehicle. They are also designed to apply the brakes automatically in the event that there is a loss of system air pressure. This happens because the air pressure holding back the heavy parking/emergency spring dissipates allowing the spring to extend the push-rod which in turn applies the brake. There are designs to cover cam brake and also disc brake applications, along with different sizes and strokes. The most common strokes are standard and long stroke.

SPRING BRAKE CHAMBER - DISC - HFL3 - TY24/24
Brake Discs, also known as rotors, are the rotating part of a wheel’s disc brake assembly. The material is typically cast iron & the designs are varied, some are solid, others are ventilated (hollowed out) with fins or vanes joining together the disc’s two contact surfaces. Ventilated discs helps to dissipate heat & commonly used on more heavily loaded front axles. A brake caliper squeezes the brake pads against the disc to create friction. The friction created slows the rotation of a wheel reducing its rotational speed and bring to a stop.

A typical vehicle braking system consists of a pair of brake pads, a brake disc and a brake caliper for each wheel. The pads are fitted in the caliper with their friction material almost touching the two sides of the brake disc. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic fluid in the caliper pushes each brake pad against each side of the rotating brake disc. This results in friction which slows down and eventually stops the vehicle. When you think of the number of times this simple action takes place every day, week, month and year – it’s no surprise that brake pads suffer gradual wear, so they need replacing regularly.

The brake caliper plays a central role in a disc-brake system and has two functions. First, it acts either as a bracket to support the brake pads on either side of the brake disc. The second, it uses pistons to convert pressure exerted when the foot brake is applied and clamps the brake pads against the brake disc to slow the wheels speed and bring the vehicle to a stop.

The air coils “Suzies” found at the rear of a tractor unit when coupling/ uncoupling to a trailer which provide compressed air from the tractor unit to the brakes of the trailer. There are usually two versions – red for the emergency line and yellow for the service line. The electrical coils play a vital role in the communication between the truck and the trailer, enhancing the brake response times and reducing braking distances. They also provide the communication from the Truck to the Trailer including the workings of the rear lights.

The compressor builds up & maintains air pressure required to operate air brakes & are either gear driven directly from the engine or belt driven. Most compressors use the truck’s lubrication & cooling systems, some are self-lubricated & some are air cooled. All compressors run continuously while the engine is running, but air compression is controlled and limited by a governor which loads or unloads the compressor. In the loaded stage, air is pumped into reservoirs. In the unloaded stage (with two cylinder compressors), the compressor pumps air back and forth between the two cylinders without supplying the reservoirs.

An air filter is a simple component in the air intake keeping the air going into the engine clean of contaminants such as water, road grime, pollen, dirt & everything else that blows into your vehicle’s grill. Oil filters keep debris & dirt out of the oil while the engine is running. A properly-working oil filter is critical to a vehicle’s operation, engine life & fuel mileage. Fuel filter is a cartridge located in the fuel line. Inside the cartridge, there’s a screen that catches dirt, rust and other debris in the fuel before it passes through to the fuel injector.

The gearbox valve has several functions & purposes & the valve body consists of a number of valves. The valves are referred to by the shifts they are responsible for. For example, the third-fourth valve determines an up shift from third gear to fourth gear & the fourth-third is responsible for a down shift from fourth gear to third. Each valve is connected to a shifter in the vehicle. The manual valve is the one controlled by the driver.

The function of a quick-release valve is to rapidly exhaust air from the controlled device. It is normally located adjacent to the controlled device, rather than requiring exhaust air to return and exhaust through the control valve. This decreases release time. A check valve is a device that only allows the flow of air in one direction and are commonly referred to as non return valves or one way valves.

On some trucks & trailers, the distance from the brake chambers to the foot valve is too far to cause immediate application of the brake when the foot valve is depressed. This is called brake lag. To correct this situation, a relay valve is installed near the rear brake chambers. A large diameter pipe is connected between the service reservoir and relay valve. The air line from the foot valve to the relay valve now becomes a control line that signals to the relay valve the amount of air to be drawn from the service reservoir for faster application of the brakes.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a means of converting nitrogen oxides (NOx) with the aid of a catalyst into diatomic nitrogen and water. A reductive, typically anhydrous ammonia, aqueous ammonia, or a urea solution, is added to a stream of exhaust gas and is reacted onto a catalyst. As the reaction drives toward completion, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, in the case of urea use, are produced. SCR systems are the method for meeting EURO 6 diesel emissions standards for heavy trucks, light commercials & cars. As a result, emissions of NOx, particulates, and hydrocarbons have been reduced by as much as 95% when compared with pre-emissions engines.

The Automatic Slack Adjuster (ASA) is a vital part of the foundation brake acting as a lever, forming the connection between the actuator & the camshaft. When the brake is applied the actuator moves the ASA forward. The worm wheel rotates the camshaft, in turn moving the brake lining toward the brake drum & disengages when it reaches the drum. When the brake is released the reacting force drops & the ASA mechanism re-engages. If excess clearance (wear) is in the system, the worm wheel in the mechanism will not return to its original position - it will have indexed.

Pneumatic solenoid valves are electromechanical devices that control the flow of air & are used for controlling pneumatic actuators. When a pneumatic solenoid valve is activated, a wire coil, located on the outside of the solenoid, creates a magnetic field in the solenoid core that causes the plunger to move to close or open the flow of a system. There are several typical types of pneumatic solenoid valves, including direct-acting, pilot-operated & two-way.

A turbocharger is a device fitted to a vehicle’s engine and is made up of two halves joined together by a shaft. On one side, hot exhaust gasses spin the turbine that is connected to another turbine which sucks air in and compresses it into the engine. This compression is what gives the engine the extra power and efficiency because as more air can go in the combustion chamber, more fuel can be added for more power. A waste-gate is a valve in between the exhaust intake and the turbocharger bypassing the turbine to control the boost pressure. To reduce the temperature a secondary radiator, or intercooler, intercepts the air before it reaches the engine.
