Casting the Net Wider: Brodart’s New Release Calendar Library collection development has never been one-size-fits-all, so neither has our support been a one-size-fits-all approach. Some selectors want a firehose of choices; others want a short list they can order from in minutes. Our online ordering platform, Bibz, built from the start with public library collection development workflow in mind, has long recognized that range. Our approach to supporting selectors has always been layered, and with the debut of the New Release Calendar, that approach continues.

Andie Paloutzian —

Director of Collection Development, Brodart

The widest net: New Release Calendar The New Release Calendar is the broadest of Bibz’s tools. It lets customers see everything available on a given day, week, or month, within a three-month window. From any click, a search is queued and filters can be applied. Whether you’re checking what publishes next Tuesday or planning ahead for the holiday season, the calendar offers a view of the full landscape. It is the place to start when you want to see it all. A little more: New Release Carousels For selectors who want more guidance, the platform’s five New Release Carousels add a layer of curation. Found on the homepage, each features cover art and focuses on audience and format (adults, children’s, teen, graphic works, and Spanish and bilingual). Selectors can browse titles already organized around the collection areas, making it easier to spot the releases most relevant to their communities. With a click on any of the New Release Carousels, a larger search will be queued, and the list will open on Bibz for further filtering. The highest level of curation: Recommended Lists At the most curated end, the Recommended Lists section features Forthcoming, Hot Topics, and SilverTIPS lists — just to name a few. These lists are designed by our selectors for selector-customers who want expert-informed picks they can act on quickly, whether they’re tracking upcoming titles, responding to patrons’ requests, or building collections from the ground up. Taken together, these tools form a customized spectrum of collection development support. A selector with time can begin with the calendar and work inward. A busy librarian can head straight to a carousel or a Recommended List source. Many will move between layers depending on the budget, or the collection area they’re working on. Every library has its own priorities, and no two selectors work exactly alike. By offering multiple levels of breadth and curation in one place, Bibz lets customers choose the level of support that fits how they work. The New Release Calendar is available on Bibz under the Search option. Explore it, alongside the New Release Carousels and Recommended Lists, and find the layer that works best for you.

The “Librarian’s Librarian” Celebrates Her Next Chapter After more than two decades supporting public libraries, one of the industry’s most trusted collection development voices is retiring from the company she helped define. Julie O’Connor, Brodart’s own librarian since her days just out of library school, joined our ranks early in her career and never lost sight of the profession she came from. Long before Julie was building collections for libraries, she was building the services that made it possible. As part of a small founding team, she shaped much of Brodart’s suite of collection development offerings, translating the daily realities of library work into tools and workflows that librarians could use. Many of those services, like our customized DiamondTIPS selection lists or our much-appreciated Opening Day Collection work, remain central to how the company supports its customers today. Julie’s influence is perhaps best measured in buildings and shelves. Over her tenure, she helped facilitate nearly 90 opening day collections for new and remodeled libraries across the country. Each project meant quizzing library staff about their collection aspirations and their communities, balancing budgets against ambitions, and getting the right books on the right shelves before the doors opened, time and time again. For the librarians on the other end, it meant a partner who understood both the stakes and the details. For the communities served, it meant a library that opened full of possibility on its first day. Julie has long described herself as “the librarian’s librarian,” and colleagues and customers say the title fits. She has answered questions with patience, offered candid advice when it was needed, and treated every collection as a reflection of the community it would serve. Newer librarians found a mentor in her, and seasoned directors found a trusted sounding board. That approach leaves a lasting legacy. Her work lives on in the services she designed, the teammates she trained, and the shelves of so many libraries that opened their doors with her expertise behind them. Every reader who walked into one of those new or renovated buildings and found something to love benefited from her care, whether they knew it or not. We and the rest of her colleagues will miss her expertise, her humor, and her unwavering commitment to librarianship. As Julie O’Connor steps away, the company offers its deepest thanks for her many years of service to libraries and the people who depend on them. Congratulations on a remarkable career, Julie, and Happy Cat-Rescuing Retirement!
