Director of Reader Services, Kansas City Public Library

Kaite Stover holds Master's degrees in Library Science and English Literature from Emporia State University. Stover has been reading books since the age of 4 and tarot cards since the age of 18. Find her at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival or on Instagram @kaitestover.
Tarot and Readers’ Advisory have more in common than you think. Both use storytelling to connect with readers. The wide-open shelves of a library are rife with the type of discovery The Fool is seeking. The Ten of Cups may remind some library staff of a lively, bouncy story time. The Lovers are making connections through the heart, and The Tower is giving suspense vibes.
Consider pairing a tarot card with a book for a display. Match The Hermit with the new Anthony Hopkins memoir, We Did OK, Kid. Looking for a book with a challenge at the center? You need Blade Forger and pair it with the Five of Wands. If The Tower is about destruction and how you survive it, Stillwater is a redemption thriller.

For an easy spooky season program, grab a deck of tarot cards, ask patrons to pull a card, and then suggest a book based on the image or meaning of the card. Did someone pull The Wheel of Fortune? Suggest a time travel adventure. A reader pulled The High Priestess? Definitely a match for Margaret Atwood’s new memoir, Book of Lives. Of course, The Lovers begs a reader to be matched with a spicy romance— try As A Last Resort.
If you want to give library patrons a souvenir of their tarot and book match, consider duplicating several Major Arcana cards and, on the reverse, put the title, author, and a QR code that takes the patron to the online record for easy placement of a hold. Leave these scattered on tables, on the front desk, in a holder at the circulation desk, or treat like a deck of cards and have patrons select one.
There’s more than one way to tell a story.
