I'm going to be honest with you: every year for about a week after the American Library Association's annual conference, I am insufferable. This year was something extra, so forgive me in advance if I am a little extra as well. This year’s 150th anniversary of ALA left buzzing like I'd mainlined an espresso made of pure book joy. My suitcase was heavier by a reasonable nine advance reading copies. Thankfully, digital ARCs exist or I’d need chiropractic care. My notebook was a mess of titles, half-finished thoughts on trends, and at least one all-caps reminder: "YOU HAVE TO READ THIS ONE." Who wouldn’t love spending days surrounded by people who get just as weirdly excited about a diversity audit as I do, and who can debate the merits of a controversial YA title with the same passion most people are reserving for World Cup rivalries?
This luminous afterglow, this quiet euphoria born from days spent immersed in a sea of passionate peers and towering stacks of titles, will ease the daily friction of budgetary yoga and other institutional hurdles. This conference "high" isn't just professional enthusiasm; it is a profound emotional and intellectual replenishment.
Here's the thing nobody warns you about: that glow — like a flash-in-the-pan bestseller — has a shelf life. The transition back to the daily grind can expire that glow, quickly. I know this firsthand. I also know the strongest medicine.
To prevent this vital wellspring from going dry, librarians must deliberately channel that conference energy into a renewed commitment to Readers’ Advisory (RA). RA is the beating heart of public service, the art of matching the right book with the right reader at the right moment. But a stagnant skillset rapidly loses its magic.
Keeping the RA well full requires regular infusions of new titles, diverse voices, and emerging genres. The literary landscape moves at a breathless pace; staying relevant means constantly expanding one’s internal catalog beyond personal comfort zones. When we commit to continuous shelf discovery —Like what I did there?—we aren’t just memorizing titles, authors or plotlines; we are sharpening our ability to connect, empathize, and ignite a passion for reading in others. Refreshing this skillset ensures that the soft glow brought home from ALA doesn't fade into a dim memory, but instead becomes a sustainable, radiant fire that illuminates entire communities.
Journals are always looking for reviewers. Being part of the review and recommendation machine is a great check against the post-conference energy drain. LibraryReads is always seeking the nominations of our peers to spotlight titles we are all excited about. You can be involved a little or a lot.
Webinars are another great tool. There’s always a book buzz to catch. Did you just miss our Tell Me More: Historical Voices Children and Young Adults webinar on July 8? Not to worry. Our whole archive lives on YouTube. And catch our next installments of Tell Me More — one for adult mysteries, on August 5, followed by a webinar featuring scary stories for children and young adults on September 9.
You can also sign up for our Youth Services newsletter, BookWorm, on Facebook, or the Bookshelf newsletter at Brodart.com, which features new title information aplenty.
However you choose to stay plugged in, the goal is the same: keep discovering, keep sharing, and keep that wellspring full. After all, readers are waiting for that zeal only a truly re-energized librarian can bring.
