As the leaves begin to turn and the air grows crisp, it's the perfect time to cozy up with a great book. This season, we're spotlighting exciting debut authors and fresh titles—each one handpicked by our collection development team to spark curiosity, reflection, and conversation.
Discover compelling new voices like Tanya Scott (Stillwater), Victor Suthammanont (Simultaneous), Eric Heisserer (Hollow Spaces), and Kat Singleton (Pretty Rings and Broken Things), along with thought-provoking reads spanning adventure, politics, true crime, relationships, and more.
I'm especially looking forward to Scott Galloway’s newest release, Notes on Being a Man. The bestselling author, NYU professor, and Pivot podcast cohost offers a timely and honest reflection on masculinity and what it means to raise and support boys today.
We're also thrilled to continue our conversation around storytelling with a special highlight: an exclusive interview with Mychal Threets about his upcoming new picture book, I’m So Happy You’re Here, publishing in early 2026. His reflections on creativity, connection, and storytelling for all ages are not to be missed.
Stories remain one of the most powerful ways to explore new ideas, cultures, and experiences. This fall, let books be your guide to discovery, understanding, and inspiration.
Enjoy!
Director of Marketing and Advertising, Books & Library Services
By Travis Corter
Mychal Threets is a librarian, literary ambassador, and the library’s number one fan (according to himself, admittedly). He grew up in Fairfield, CA, and got his first library card at the age of five. Mychal says that his awards and recognitions are a testament to the library people who raised him. He is a recipient of the 2024 “I Love My Librarian” award from the American Library Association, one of School Library Journal’s 2024 Movers and Shakers, one of TIME Magazine’s 2024 Next Generation Leaders, and a 2025 The Webby Awards winner.
Happiness can be hard to find, but Mychal Threets’ library joy is downright infectious. The PBS resident librarian and former children’s librarian is known for his enthusiasm surrounding libraries, library staff, and the underserved. His TikTok videos regularly amass like after like as he spreads encouragement and inspiration.
We were fortunate enough to sit down with Mychal—who grew up in his beloved Fairfield, CA, library—to discuss his new book, his relationship with libraries, what drives him, and how he defines “library joy.”
Mychal is excited to share his new picture book with the world when it releases in 2026. “The book is called I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Libraries. It’s essentially
about a day in the life of a library. It looks at library kids coming into the library and hopefully discovering that the library is for every single one of them. It’s my love letter to libraries, to library people, to library kids,” Mychal says. “I’m so honored and proud that illustrator Lorraine Nam accepted the project. And to my literary agent, Lara Perkins: I am extremely thankful for all your insight and tremendous help in guiding me, a new author, through this journey.”
Mychal grew up in the library and worked as a full-time librarian at Solano County Library in Fairfield, CA, for over 11 rewarding years before embarking on his latest journey. Having recently transitioned from a full-time librarian position to a library influencer loved the world over, he now shares his passion
for reading with adults and kids alike. When asked how he became an influencer, he humbly laughed. “I’m laughing because I still don’t see myself that way. I would say I became an influencer, if I’m able to be called an influencer, sheerly by accident. I think it comes down to just talking genuinely and authentically about how much libraries mean to me,” Mychal says.
He also enjoys showing people the tattoos of beloved book characters displayed on his arms, saying his “obnoxious enthusiasm for all things literacy-related” has helped his message resonate. “As much as we love drama and chaos, I think we still really want positivity. We really want to experience joy as much as possible because it’s so unusual these days,” he says. “I always try to amplify libraries and library people, to shine a spotlight on them.”
Transitioning from a librarian to a less traditional role has provided opportunities
Mychal did not expect. “I’m now PBS’s resident librarian,” he says. “It’s a social media partnership that lets me share book recommendations, talk about library stories, and help libraries in each state support their community.” During the past two years, he estimates he has flown on approximately 300 airplanes—and he wouldn’t change it for the world. “As much as I would love to go back to being a traditional librarian, I think I’m somehow having even more impact on libraries than I ever thought, in the most unexpected role ever.”
As part of his library outreach, Mychal extends a listening ear and a helping hand to those struggling with mental health,
including the unhoused and those with mental illnesses. He is very open about his own mental health. He talks about it in hopes that it’ll help others in their mental health journey. Mychal says the key to connecting with others lies in empathy and compassion. “I treat them like friends, treat them like human beings. That’s the best possible way to reach all those various communities who are struggling. I think if I’ve had any success
I always try to amplify libraries and library people, to shine a spotlight on them.
in doing so, it’s just by being honest with them,” Mychal says. “As library people and educators, we go through so many different trainings, so many different workshops, but I think it really is just getting to that human level of those different communities.”
At the end of the day, Mychal says, it’s all about library joy, a term whose definition is as varied as those who experience it. “For me personally, library joy comes from the library always being there for us, 24/7, 365 days a year. There are so many different things that encompass mental health; joy is the hardest one to reach. But just like the library is always there for us whenever we’re ready, joy is always there for us to grab ahold of.”
