Keeping the Momentum of Summer Reading into the Fall

Summer reading programs are a powerful way to keep children connected to books and learning outside the classroom. They help build literacy skills, spark curiosity, and foster a genuine love of reading. But as summer ends and school begins, it’s important to carry that excitement into the fall. With the right approach, reading can remain a joyful and meaningful part of everyday life—not just another school task.

Fall is a natural time to build on the habits developed over the summer. As children adjust to new routines, it’s the perfect season to introduce fresh stories that reflect their growth, interests, and the world around them. Our fall catalog supports this transition with a wide range of engaging titles—from biographies, health, and mysteries to science fiction, world cultures, and more.

A central focus this season is social-emotional learning—books that explore emotions, relationships, and identity help young readers better understand themselves and others. Culturally diverse stories provide windows into different perspectives and lived experiences. These titles do more than entertain—they spark thoughtful conversations and promote empathy.

One highlight of our fall offerings is an exclusive interview with librarian and author Mychal Threets, who discusses his upcoming picture book I’m So Happy You’re Here (coming in 2026). He reminds us that books can help children feel seen, valued, and connected to others.

Also featured is the article “Sustaining Summer Excitement into Autumn” by Andie Paloutzian, Director of Collection Development at Brodart. She shares simple but effective strategies for keeping young readers engaged, including using targeted book lists and creative displays to maintain enthusiasm throughout the school year.

Ultimately, reading should remain both fun and purposeful. By continuing to nurture a child’s connection to books into the fall, we support their growth not only as students, but as curious thinkers and compassionate individuals. With thoughtful selections and encouragement, the energy of summer reading can evolve—and thrive—all year long.

Enjoy!

So how does the catalog work?

Greetings, librarians!

It’s hard to believe that fall has arrived, yet a peek out the window here in Pennsylvania reveals the changes taking place all around us. Before I set sail for Lake Erie and the annual Pennsylvania Library Association conference in a few weeks, I thought I’d recap what’s been happening at Brodart this year.

As winter concluded, we celebrated our first full year of providing Bound to Stay Bound (BTSB) guaranteed library prebind editions to public libraries, and in June I was able to visit their facilities in Jacksonville, IL, where they were celebrating their 105th anniversary! An extensive warehouse tour revealed the intricate attention to detail required to create the sturdiest books available to libraries; I had the opportunity to inspect a few copies and add the BTSB seal of approval, too! My heartfelt thanks go out to all of you who have invested in these editions for your libraries, making our first year a success.

In late spring, we concluded our Brodart-Penguin Random House Library Focus Group Pilot Program, which was hosted by both organizations and included a fabulous panel of youth librarians and staff from library systems of various sizes, as well as guest speakers. Over the course of the year, we discussed summer reading programs, book banning,

Erica's Corner

early readers and decodable books, library programming, and general collection development. Our goal was to foster collaboration and networking amongst our organizations, ultimately supporting intellectual freedom and expanding library collections while utilizing feedback to better serve our library colleagues. It was an invaluable learning experience.

We welcomed summer at ALA Annual in Philadelphia. From a solemn moment of silence over the defunding of the IMLS to ALA President Cindy Hoyl’s formal introduction of the Show Up For Our Libraries campaign, the vibe was clear: we are all prepared to fight to share stories allowing ALL young people to be seen and represented in the stories they read. At the Brodart booth, we welcomed library literacy presentations from the Teach My Kid to Read team and book signings with Trung Le Nguyen, Alda P. Dobbs, and collaborators Mia Wenjen and Colleen KongSavage. I was fortunate to attend my first Newbery-Caldecott-Legacy Awards Banquet, an inspirational and emotional event.

Next month, a second library focus group begins, centering on collection development topics. Interested in joining us in the future, or have a topic to suggest for discussion and action? Email me at BYS@brodart.com. Feel free to reach out to learn more about our literacy hub collections available through Teach My Kid to Read, as well. As we get busy preparing our 2026 Summer Reading Prize Program, keep up-to-date with what’s new by subscribing to our YouTube channel and following us on Instagram and Facebook.

Until next issue, happy reading!

Sustaining Summer Excitement into Autumn

I love to think about the many summers I spent working in public libraries. I always thought of it as our holiday shopping bonanza –except this Black Friday energy lasted for months, not hours. Like all of you, I was happy with the volume of visitors, but most excited about the engagement potential with readers around their favorite authors, titles, and series.

The Summer Reading Program has always been the chance to build that quest-worthy, lifelong love of reading, and not one of us wastes an opportunity like that. Now, as another frenetic Summer Reading season has closed, let’s also take a minute to ponder the ways to keep the reading momentum for younger patrons going with some simple collection development and merchandising strategies to keep that engagement high.

Think about capitalizing on summer interests. Now is the time to acquire more books in those popular juvenile fiction and chapter book series. This is also a great time to practice a little collection hygiene and purge those well-loved editions and replace with fresh copies. We have a partnership with Bound to Stay Bound. Maybe consider adding a few prebind editions from the early part of those series to keep your collection complete and durable.

Try to align with school-year themes. Also wrapping up is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. This often involves school outreach and the chance to hear about what they need firsthand from teachers and students. Consider refreshing the juvenile reference and general juvenile nonfiction shelves. This move is proof of the homework help available, and it supports curious minds between the classroom and their living rooms.

It’s also the perfect time to add more leveled readers and educational graphic novels. This is a natural moment to look at your holdings in high-interest/low-reading-level books to ensure access for all reading abilities. If you need help here, Brodart maintains wonderful collection building lists on Bibz and can help point you in the right direction.

Have a story or insight to share? Click here to submit your contribution to Libraries Today.

Displays can be a way to support transitions to school life and new routines for your youngest patrons. Curated book displays that address the back-to-school experience, including social skills and anxiety, are evergreen ideas for fall. Think about more than one display as your space allows. Could you pull together a "starting kindergarten" display near your leveled readers? Could you make space for a shelf display on "middle school life" in your juvenile fiction stacks? These are sure to be cleaned out in speedy fashion.

Displays can also be a way to reinforce reading habits with a "patron picks" display. Try to maintain a visible “Here’s what I read this summer,” or “I think you should try this next,” display with simple bookmarks listing patrons' first names. Your younger patrons will love seeing their selections on parade.

Beyond the Stacks:

Getting to Know Library Influencer Mychal Threets

Mychal Threets is a librarian, literary ambassador, and the library’s number one fan (according to himself, admittedly). He grew up in Fairfield, CA, and got his first library card at the age of five. Mychal says that his awards and recognitions are a testament to the library people who raised him. He is a recipient of the 2024 “I Love My Librarian” award from the American Library Association, one of School Library Journal’s 2024 Movers and Shakers, one of TIME Magazine’s 2024 Next Generation Leaders, and a 2025 The Webby Awards winner.

Happiness can be hard to find, but Mychal Threets’s library joy is downright infectious. The PBS resident librarian and former children’s librarian is known for his enthusiasm surrounding libraries, library staff, and the underserved. His TikTok videos regularly amass like after like as he spreads encouragement and inspiration.

We were fortunate enough to sit down with Mychal—who grew up in his beloved Fairfield, CA, library—to discuss his new book, his relationship with libraries, what drives him, and how he defines “library joy.”

Mychal is excited to share his new picture book with the world when it releases in 2026. “The book is called I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Libraries. It’s

essentially about a day in the life of a library. It looks at library kids coming into the library and hopefully discovering that the library is for every single one of them. It’s my love letter to libraries, to library people, to library kids,” Mychal says.

“I’m so honored and proud that illustrator Lorraine Nam accepted the project. And to my literary agent, Lara Perkins: I am extremely thankful for all your insight and tremendous help in guiding me, a new author, through this journey.”

Though he has never deliberately geared his content specifically toward kids, Mychal is always mindful of the words and subjects he highlights. “I like to talk about all sorts of books. I tend to talk a lot more about kids’ books, chapter books, and picture books, in part because I was a children’s librarian for so long.” He also believes that returning to the stories that captivated us as children can help ignite a passion for reading in reluctant readers. “I’ve always felt that reading the books that first hooked us as children is the best way to start reading more as adults,” Mychal says.

He also enjoys showing people the tattoos of beloved book characters displayed on his arms, saying his “obnoxious enthusiasm for all things literacy-related” has helped his message resonate. “As much as we love drama and chaos, I think we still really want positivity. We really want to experience joy as much as possible because it’s so unusual these days,” Mychal says.

Mychal grew up in the library and worked as a full-time librarian at Solano County Library in Fairfield, CA, for over 11 rewarding years before embarking on his latest journey. Transitioning from a librarian to a less traditional role has provided opportunities Mychal did not expect. “I’m now PBS’s resident librarian,” he says. “It’s a social media partnership that lets me share book recommendations, talk about library stories,

and help libraries in each state support their community. I think I’m somehow having even more impact on libraries than I ever thought, in the most unexpected role ever.”

As part of his library outreach, Mychal extends a listening ear and a helping hand to those struggling with mental health, including the unhoused and those with mental illnesses. He is very open about his own mental health. He talks about it in hopes that it’ll help others in their mental health journey. Mychal says the key to connecting with others lies in empathy and compassion. “I treat them like friends, treat them like human beings,” Mychal says. “As library

I think I’m somehow having even more impact ... in the most unexpected role ever.

people and educators, we go through so many different trainings, so many different workshops, but I think it really is just getting to that human level of those different communities.”

At the end of the day, Mychal says, it’s all about library joy, a term whose definition is as varied as those who experience it. “For me personally, library joy comes from the library always being there for us, 24/7, 365 days a year. There are so many different things that encompass mental health; joy is the hardest one to reach. But just like the library is always there for us whenever we’re ready, joy is always there for us to grab ahold of.”
