Greetings, librarians!

Erica's Corner

In this issue, I’m excited to introduce a Meet the Staff segment, this time from Brodart’s Collection Development team. I look forward to continuing this new tradition in future issues.

Elizabeth “Liz” Tanguma’s love of graphic novels started as a child in a public library. As a youth services public librarian in South Texas, she knew of the unique power that graphic novels have to both support literacy and library use, and she focused on their curation and programming. She is Brodart’s graphic novel selector, striving to bring customers high-quality titles of both breadth and depth, and she organizes the monthly KidSafe list to aid customers in their children and teen selections. Let’s get to know a little more about Liz and what she does!

Q. As Brodart’s KidSafe selector, what would you like librarians to know about the program?

I have a lot to say about KidSafe! But, whether something is KidSafe or not depends on the publisher’s recommended age for a book and whether it aligns with the book’s content and presentation. I try to think about who the book is being marketed to, the perspective of the selector buying the book, the reader picking it up off the shelf, and the reader’s grownup. Often, I leave reviews in Edelweiss, NetGalley, or StoryGraph for selectors to get more content information, and I welcome emails and questions!

Q. What trend(s) in graphic works are you excited about this year?

I’m beyond happy to see so much more middle grade manga coming out! Even publishers who normally don’t put out manga have realized it’s here to stay and are entering the space with some really cool titles. I’m also seeing that, at least for younger readers, they’re licensing shorter, already completed manga series.

Q. Any favorite forthcoming graphic series you’d like our readers to check out?

Speaking of middle grade manga — the first volume of Crescent Moon Marching from Graphix is out in

August. It’s full color and will be completed in six volumes. It’s about a first-year high school student who runs away from home to live with her cool aunt. She feels unfulfilled and that her life has no direction, but then she discovers the local high school marching band. It’s shaping up to be a story about purpose and perseverance. And, as a marching arts fan, I’ll admit I’m very biased.

Q. We heard you have been chosen to sit on the Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table’s Best Graphic Novels for Children Committee. How exciting! What is that process like?

It’s a lot of reading! And I still read a bunch of YA titles for the KidSafe list (I swear I’m not complaining)! I have no idea how the people who choose the prose novel awards do it. It’s also a little nerve-wracking. I’m trying to give each book I read the respect and attention it deserves, and I’ve gone back to my college days of heavily annotating as a read. I also need to get another bookshelf.

I hope your Summer Reading adventures are soon off to a good start, and I will catch you in the next issue.

Brodart’s Collection Development Team Is Leveling Up

If the Collection Development Department at Brodart had a theme song right now, it would be something triumphant — because the team is growing, evolving, and adding some very impressive talent. Over the past year, four new librarians have joined the ranks, each bringing their own flavor of expertise and library world superpowers.

The expansion kicked off in June 2025 with the arrival of Lindsey Ferrante, MLS, who stepped into the role of Project Management Librarian. After 17 years at Baker & Taylor, where she served as Senior Collection Development Librarian and assisted with juvenile and young adult purchasing, she brought her library acumen to team Brodart. Before her vendor side adventures, Lindsey spent time in public libraries, including a stint at Boyertown Community Library in Pennsylvania. Based in New Jersey, Lindsey has jumped right into the Brodart ecosystem with energy and expertise.

Fast forward to February 2026, when the team welcomed not one but two new Librarian Selectors: Courtney Saldana, MLIS and Emily Mroczek, MLIS. If you’ve ever wished for librarians who live and breathe youth and teen services, these two are your dream team. Courtney joined from California with a career filled with standout roles at Ontario and Pasadena. She also coordinated the statewide Book to Action program, and ran a Teen Book Fair, where she hosted The Book Thief author Marcus Zusak. (Yes, that Marcus Zusak.) Emily from Illinois, meanwhile, also arrived with a rich background in youth services at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Naperville Public Library, and Arlington Heights Memorial Library. She also

co-leads School Library Journal’s Heavy Medal mock Newbery blog. If you wonder what kids will be reading next year, ask Emily. These selectors' combined passion for connecting kids and teens with meaningful stories shines through everything they do.

Most recently, in March, Kim Borovitz, MLS, joined the department as another Project Management Librarian. Like Lindsey, Kim brings two decades of vendor side experience from Baker & Taylor, where she also served as a Senior Collection Development Librarian. Both she and Lindsey will shepherd librarians through Opening Day Collection projects and assist with customized selection needs, something they are both practiced experts at. Before her vendor years, Kim spent five years in special libraries, including roles with Hoffmann La Roche and Wyeth Consumer Healthcare. That blend of special and public library collection development experience gives her a unique perspective — and a valuable one for Brodart’s growing team.

With Lindsey, Courtney, Emily, and Kim now on board, the Collection Development Department is stronger, more dynamic, and more ready than ever to support libraries. Now a department of 17 strong, the future is bright and busy — and together, they’re helping shape the next chapter of Brodart’s commitment to exceptional library service.
