Greetings, librarians!
Earlier this year, we announced our partnership with the early literacy experts at the nonprofit Teach My Kid to Read (TMKTR). Below I interview co-founders Marion Waldman and Beth Bevars, who share how they are bridging the literacy gap and providing access and support to library literacy leaders.
Q: What inspired you to launch TMKTR and the Literacy@Your Library community?
A: Our journey started as two parents navigating the emotional and financial toll of having children who struggled to learn to read. We were shocked and frustrated by how difficult it was to find the right help—and how many barriers stood in the way. When we finally discovered evidence-based resources and strategies that made a difference, we felt compelled to do something bigger: to make these tools accessible to every family and community, regardless of zip code. That’s why we created TMKTR, and why we’re now building a broader online community to support libraries and families across the country.
Q: Why focus on public libraries?
A: Along the way, we realized that libraries are one of the most equitable, trusted, and communitycentered institutions available to support early literacy. Libraries can bridge the gap for families by offering access to the books, tools, and information that many don’t even know exist. They are uniquely positioned to help kids learn to read—and to reach the caregivers, educators, and patrons who need support the most. Beth was also a public library director. She saw firsthand both the opportunities and the gaps in supporting early and struggling readers. In creating our library literacy programs, she wanted to build the kind of library she wished had existed when her own child needed help—a place where families could find the right books, resources, and answers.
Q: What is a library literacy HUB, and what does it include?
A: Our library literacy HUBs are designed to serve early and struggling readers. A typical HUB includes:
• 1,000 books—decodable books for all ages, hilo books, titles about dyslexia and other reading challenges, and teacher/parent literacy resources
• Input-driven collections—5% of the budget is reserved for community-specific requests
• Supporting materials—bins, signage, spine stickers, and in some libraries, take-home kits for families
Q: Can librarians use your resources to support parents and patrons?
A: Absolutely! Every library that joins our online community receives free access to literacy tools, including customizable bookmarks with a QR code and URL that links to our parent/caregiver education hub. Our website also includes free e-books and information for families navigating reading challenges.
Q: How can I get involved?
A: Join us on Thursday, July 17th at 12:00 PM ET for our free webinar, "Adding Books to Your Library with Brodart." We’ll share how libraries can expand their collections with decodable books and other essential literacy resources. You can also visit our website to join the Literacy@Your Library community.
Marion and Beth will be joining us at Brodart booth 925 at ALA in Philadelphia on Saturday (1:30 – 3:30PM) and Sunday (2:00 – 4:00PM). Please stop by! We look forward to helping you bring decodable books into your library, and hope you will take advantage of the helpful insights and resources that TMKTR offers. If you are eager to build your collection, please contact me at BYS@brodart.com.
Until next issue, happy reading!
