Subtractive multilingualism: this is learning of the second language that DOES interfere/ replaces the first language. Individuals loose skills or fluency in their primary language, especially if the primary language is not being reinforced. The result of this could be that the “Home” Language is then replaced by the newly learnt language

- Simultaneous Multilingualism : Simultaneous multilingualism is defined as "the exposure to two or more languages from birth." It is also believed that by the age of three, a child can count or understand meaning in two or more languages. This sort of bilingualism/multilingualism may indicate that the child picks up languages more naturally, independently, and without assistance.

- Sequential Multilingualism : Sequential multilingualism is “When someone acquires the second language after having learnt the first”.Asequential bilingual learns a second language after the first language has already been established. For example, a child learns a language at home and then is placed in a school of language that is different to the home language.
