EBM Construction History EBM Corporations can trace its beginning to 1976 when Clayton Ellsworth founded the company in Tilden, Nebraska.

His son, Guy Ellsworth, joined him full-time in early 1981 and they moved the company to Norfolk, Nebraska. In 2012, Andrew Ellsworth followed in his grandfather and father’s footsteps and started working full-time at EBM.

EBM’s millwright services work extensively throughout the central United States, primarily in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri 4

EBM started by fabricating equipment for the fertilizer industry.

As the business grew, equipment installation, repairs, facility remodels, and construction of new grain handling facilities soon followed. Today, EBM Construction’s projects span the central United States, from Texas to North Dakota, and from Wyoming to Illinois.

Design and Facility Planning At EBM Construction, we understand there are many items to take into account in the planning of a new facility and we are here to assist. We work with our customers to understand their specific needs in order to configure the best possible grain storage, grain handling, or feed mill facility.

New Construction When the perfect budget and design meet, that is when the construction crew’s job starts. Our experienced millwright crews fabricate the project carefully and systematically. Relentlessly looking for ways to improve the efficiency of every project at hand is what makes us the best.

When the project is complete, the end result is an efficient, highly capable, feed and/or grain facility.

We are a modern millwright service. Our construction crews maintain a safe working environment and work in accordance with OSHA.

Project Management

Our millwright services offer everything from minor repairs to major remodels and new construction.

Our Project Managers are one of the many reasons why we should be your first choice when choosing an agri/industrial contractor. Our Project Managers deal with the long-term planning of the project, coordinate the subcontractors and equipment, have full and complete knowledge of the construction site, and control the project from beginning to end.

Like new construction jobs, we design and implement a plan based upon budget, time, space, and specifications.

When working on a facility expansion and/or renovation for a new customer, we take the time to understand the facility as if it was our own.

Our services are not limited to new construction, expansion, or renovation. From time to time, our customers will need their feed and grain facilities to be maintained and/ or repaired. General maintenance and repair are normal and to be expected. No matter how preventative a company may be, typical wear and tear will happen. When this occurs, we are there to help.

In case of emergency, EBM Construction is available 24/7. There may come a point when a company’s facility is not working properly, or broke down altogether. When these issues arise, we act fast because time is money.

t Folken Feed Yards, a northeast Nebraska feed Leigh yard hosting 8,500 to 9,000 head of cattle at any given time, NEBRASKA high-moisture ground corn is the name of the game.

“We grind at 25-30% moisture with a window of two weeks during harvest,” says President Chuck Folken, who represents the third generation of Folkens to run the business. (His son, Justin, manages the feedyard, making him the fourth generation.)

“Then we put it up in a 600,000-bushel bunker,” he continues. “We find the cattle perform significantly better on high-moisture corn than dry-rolled.”

The Folkens were feeding their cattle, however, with a rudimentary facility unchanged in more than 40 years. It consisted of an auger feeding a 10,000-bushel square bin mounted atop a steel-sided building containing a roller mill.

The cattle feeder hired EBM Construction Inc., Norfolk, NE (800-356-9782), to build a new $1 million corn grinding facility with state-of-the-art technology.

“I met (EBM President) Guy Ellsworth on a trip to Savannah, GA,” Folken recalls. “EBM has the reputation of being the best millwright company in our area. They work long hours to make sure everything is right before they leave. I wanted a facility that would be around for my grandkids to use.”

Construction got underway in May 2017 and took about eight weeks to complete.

Ready to Grind The heart of the updated facility is a 15,000-bushel Chief corrugated steel hopper tank, 25 feet in diameter with a 32-foot sidewall and 45-degree steel hopper. This holds wet corn awaiting grinding.

Adjacent to the new tank is a portable drive-over receiving pit, which feeds a 15,000-bph Chief leg. The leg is equipped with Maxi-Lift red HD-Max 14x8 buckets mounted on a 16-inch belt and supported by a Chief tower with switchback staircase.

The leg deposits grain into an Abel two-way valve. One outlet goes via gravity to the new tank; the other goes to an existing 10,000-bushel tank serving the older roller mill building. That mill is still in use, but EBM installed two new 2,400-bushel Lowry square bins atop the old building serviced by a small jump leg.

The hopper tank empties onto an 8,500-bph Chief drag conveyor extending out approximately 100 feet.

The conveyor ends with a spout used to feed a roller mill supplied as needed by a local custom grinding operation.

he Central Valley Ag (CVA) rail terminal that operates in Hinton, IA (712-947-4212) does so with higher storage, receiving, and drying capacities than it did before a March 2016 explosion that heavily damaged a portion of the facility.

The Hinton facility stretches north and south along a Union Pacific/BNSF main line in the middle of town. The blast, which injured two employees, damaged the “No. 1 house,” or the central portion of the elevator, including 180,000 bushels worth of concrete storage and a 15,000-bph leg.

“We looked at rebuilding that portion of the facility, but the cost-effectiveness wasn’t there,” says Grain Operations Manager Stanley Kallhoff, who moved to the Hinton location shortly before the explosion from a CVA elevator in Elgin, NE. “We tore down that portion of the elevator and built new storage and equipment, and in the process, we gained 450,000 bushels of new storage.”

and south sections of the elevator were unharmed and were able to remain in operation during the reconstruction process.

two Brock grain dryers (4,700 bph and 4,000 bph) from the old elevator north to its new location. VAA, LLC, Plymouth, MN (763-559-9100), did structural design on the dryer and leg foundations and bracing.

That work was completed during the summer of 2016, while demolition work was underway and the dryer was used that fall, using a new wet leg and new dry leg that were installed next to the No. 2 house.

CVA brought in ABC Crane Co.,

Cedar Falls, IA (800-886-0485), to handle the demolition of the No. 1 house. That work was completed and the debris removed so that new construction could begin by the late fall.

For the new construction, CVA took bids and hired EBM Construction, Norfolk, NE (800-356-0782), as general contractor and millwright in November 2016. The company also brought in McPherson Concrete Storage Systems, McPherson, KS (800-999-8151), to construct three new jumpform concrete

tanks. Additional contractors on the project: • Aschoff Construction, Osmond, NE (866-748-3551), designed and excavated new receiving pits.

• Drake Inc., Waco, NE (402-3621863), installed KanalSystem air-assist aeration/unloading floors in the three new tanks.

• Thompson Electric Inc., Sioux City, IA (712-252-4221), served as electrical contractor.

• Kasa Controls, Salina, KS (785825-7181), did the automation systems.

The new section of the elevator was up and running by the end of August, Kallhoff says.

The New Construction The three new McPherson tanks stand 48 feet in diameter and 140 feet tall and hold 217,000 bushels each. Each tank is outfitted with seven-cable TSGC temperature monitoring systems, Safe-Grain radar-type

level indicators, and KanalSystem aeration and air-assist unloading floors.

Each tank is equipped with two 40-hp AIRLANCO centrifugal fans plus a 5-hp roof exhauster for aeration at 1/11 cfm per bushel on coarse grains. Two of the

tanks have additional 30-hp fans and one a 50-hp fan for air-assisted unloading.

The project also includes a 1,000-bushel enclosed mechanical receiving pit, one of three at Hinton. It feeds grain into a 20,000-bph Schlagel receiving leg equipped with a single row

When Farmers Ranchers Co-op Association first built a feed mill in Ainsworth, NE, in 1978, it was designed to produce 150 tons of mostly beef feeds per day. As of 2015, it was producing 350 to 400 tons per day round the clock.

Today, the cooperative serves ranchers over a vast area including north central and northwest Nebraska, as well as large parts of South Dakota and Wyoming, which explains much of the growth.

“The 38-year-old mill was still in good shape, and it’s still in operation,” says Rocky Sheehan, director of feed operations and a 25-year veteran of the cooperative. “But we had completely outgrown it.”

Even more challenging than producing

enough feed to meet demand was trying to staff six days a week of night shifts.

In 2015, the board approved the construction of a second feed mill at the South Main Street site, which began producing its signature 7/8-inch-x-3-inch range cubes at the end of October 2016.

“Now, both mills can produce 600 to 800 tpd of feed, and we’re loading 25 trucks per day with both bulk and bagged feeds,” says Sheehan.

has been with Farmers Ranchers for 29 years. “They’ve always done good work, and we can always call on them and get whatever we need day or night.”

Unique Features The second mill on the site has a couple of unique features, according to Worden. One is its two pellet lines dedicated to the manufacture of range cubes.

Another is the use of Bühler Aeroglide cube dryers rather than conventional pellet coolers. The dryers are 55 feet long, 15-1/2 feet wide, and 17 feet tall mounted 30 inches off the floor, which were unloaded and installed with a permanent 5-ton overhead bridge crane.

The 3-million-BTU dryers are aspirated with 70-hp worth of heated, forced air and operate at 20 tph.

Worden says the dryers, fed directly from the pellet mills, remove moisture from the cubes, increasing their shelf life to a year by removing all water activity.

Finally, the project included construction of a 33-foot-diameter, 80-foottall Laidig steel tank for storage of distillers dried grains (DDGs). The tank is equipped with a 45-degree steel hopper bottom with a Laidig auger designed to prevent the product from caking into a solid mass, a frequent problem with DDGs, and eliminating the need to enter the tank for cleanout.

Mill Specifications The new all-steel mill and adjacent warehouse add 13,000 square feet of space under roof to the Ainsworth complex, with the mill itself standing on a 110-foot-x-78-foot footprint.

The manufacturing plant is topped by 26 steel feed ingredient bins holding approximately 780 tons total. Storage also includes four 25-ton mash feed bins above the pellet mills, as well as eight 24-ton and four 50-ton finished feed bins above the truck loadout bay.

All mill operations are under the control of an Easy Automation system.

Incoming whole grains are reduced on a 25-tph Andritz Sprout hammermll before being sent to feed ingredient storage.

Ingredients are mixed in a Scott 255 cubic feet, four-ton double-ribbon mixer in an average of four minutes per batch. Microingredients are added to the mixer from a 12-bin Easy Automation microingredient system.

Mash feed is molded into range cubes on a pair of Andritz Sprout 20-tph pellet mills.

The new mill loads feed trucks six hours a day through overhead spouts equipped with EBM Gentle Roll screeners.

Approximately 5% of the mill’s output is bagged on an Imeco bagging system with Eagle Simplex bag closers. A Genaire robotic stacker loads bags onto pallets.

“We can now do the same production in 10 hours that used to take us 24 hours on the old mill by itself,” says Sheehan.

Since its inception 40 years ago, EBM has continued to grow its business across several segments that expand upon on the foundation laid by the Ellsworth family that continues to own and operate the company today.

Built on Experience and Passion “Before EBM, my grandfather worked for a supply business that supplied chains and components to different industrial equipment industries, anything from mining to steel milling,” recalls General Manager Andrew Ellsworth, who represents the third generation of Ellsworths managing EBM. “Because of his background in supply – and he’s worked with a lot of different organizations through the years with different products – he became pretty well versed in material handling storage for various industries, not just grain but also fertilizer and other bulk materials.”

Based on his knowledge and experience, Ellsworth’s grandfather, Clayton, opened shop under the name Easy Blend Manufacturing or EBM. Initially, he invented a fertilizer blender called the Easy Blend fertilizer mixer, which was designed for use with different hopper slopes, where material is pitched into the hopper and discharged into a leg to mix fertilizer.

By 1976, the company had secured financial partners that helped support the business, but with the farm crisis of the 1980s, EBM’s investors wanted out. So his grandfather took over the company entirely and moved its headquarters from Tilden to Norfolk, where it remains today.

Since then, EBM’s business has split into three main divisions: manufacturing, construction, and cranes.

Manufacturing On the manufacturing side of the business, Ellsworth says that his grandfather, Clayton, spent a great deal of time

designing one of the company’s flagship products for the feed and grain industry called the Gentle Roll screener.

The Gentle Roll was designed to gently move the product through its non-vibrating system to separate by size.

Ellsworth says the Gentle Roll is used for cleaning grain, feed pellets, wood pellets, pet food, salt, and soybeans.

It also was built for other applications such as fertilizer, minerals, and ground rubber, just to name a few.

“The Gentle Roll is a drum cleaner that is modular, which makes it easy to increase capacity with an existing machine.

We can do all kinds of different splits and separations based off what the customer wants in a product,” he explains.

Often installed in conjunction with the Gentle Roll screener is the Sidewinder belt drag conveyor. This conveyor utilizes a belt instead of a chain to reduce the amount of noise, vibration, required maintenance, and product damage.

multiple inlet and discharge options, and lift angles up to 40 degrees.

Today, EBM Manufacturing also fabricates custom products including platforms, embeds, receiving hoppers, spouts, U-trough conveyors, and a variety of other grain handling accessories.

Other Divisions As a family-owned and -operated business, Ellsworth’s father, Guy, came

Guy loved designing and building equipment, and although the company had taken on some construction work prior to 1981, he focused exclusively on this area of the business.

“We really have built up the construction side of our business since the eighties,” explains Andrew. “Now, we do some projects with fertilizer, but mostly this is repair work. We troubleshoot material

handling and do repair and maintenance on our customers’ equipment – but our bread and butter is building feed mills and grain elevators.”

Finally, Andrew notes that the company’s crane division has grown gradually along with EBM Construction, which increasingly has required the use of cranes for lifting in its construction projects. Ellsworth says that in the early 2000s, EBM purchased its first 70-ton

crane and decided to spin off and give the new division its own name.

Doing It the Right Way One of the things that sets EBM Construction apart from others in the market, according to Ellsworth, is that the company doesn’t treat projects as one-off builds that bring in a paycheck.

Rather, it seeks to build relationships with customers to determine what their plans for growth will be and help them realize that vision together.

“The best thing I can say about our construction company is that we partner with our customers to give them a value proposition, to create the best product while figuring out what their needs are.”

Then, he says, EBM asks the customer a key question: “Where do you see your business going in the future?

There are customers that we’ve built a feed mill for 20 years ago, where we still do all their maintenance and repair work.

Obviously, they must think that we’re doing something right, because they still call us back to help them out,” he notes.

When it comes to quality and warranties, Ellsworth says it all boils down to taking care of customers and doing what’s right – values that were instilled in him from his grandfather, Clayton, and father, Guy, over the years, and that he now imparts to his employees. “It’s doing the right thing, making it right, and going the extra miles for customers, because our customers are what keep us employed,” he says.

Of course the same care and concern extends to EBM’s employees as well.

“The main thing is for my employees to be safe and work efficiently, but at the end of the day, also to come home, earn a profit, and make our customer happy.

EBM Construction of Norfolk and Farmers Pride Cooperative were recently awarded the 2014 Chief Industries Project of the Year at its annual dealer meeting. Guy Ellsworth, president and CEO of EBM Construction, submitted the Neligh terminal site project as the company’s best Chief build during 2014. EBM and Farmers Pride were chosen because of the unique features of the new grain facility in Neligh.

“Chief Industries recognized this project as a truck terminal grain facility and its unique efficiencies featuring its excellent speed and space for the farmer,” stated Ellsworth. Pictured are Dean Thernes, general manager of Farmers Pride, and Guy Ellsworth, president of EBM. Farmers Pride is owned by 5,000 farmers and ranchers across northeast Nebraska with locations in Battle Creek, Bloomfield, Ewing, Madison Newman Grove, Neligh-Oakdale, O’Neill, Oakland, Osmond, Pierce, Plainview and Snyder.

LENRD continues to protect groundwater

The Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District (LENRD) Board of Directors is considering whether to adopt some changes to its groundwater management rules. The LENRD Board is currently working with staff to gather information and come up with new categories that may allow for small amounts of irrigated acres to be developed through the variance process.

LENRD General Manager Mike Sousek said, “The board will consider several changes, including whether to add an extra category to our variance process, which will give us some flexibility to handle certain irrigation certification situations that we otherwise could not.”

Currently, the district’s rules do not allow for minor modifications when certifying irrigated acres. Under the proposed rule change, a
