Back in 2019, the Taycan was Porsche’s first-ever fully electric sports car, and now this segment of the company accounts for almost 25% worldwide. Based in Ottobrunn (near Munich), Fazua GmbH pioneered lightweight compact e-drive technology and works with more than 40 major bicycle brands worldwide. The company currently employs more than 100 people at its headquarters.

Currently e-bikes, not cars, appear to be the world’s best-selling electric vehicle. According to the market research firm NPD Group, the pandemic bike boom boosted e-bike sales by 145% from 2019 to 2020, more than double the rate of classic bikes, reported the New York Times. While estimates vary, according to the Pew Research Center, Americans purchased around half a million e-bikes in 2020 vs. 231,000 electric cars. In 2021, e-bikes remained the best-selling electric vehicle in the USA with imports at nearly 790,000 units vs 652,000 electric cars bought by Americans, reported Bloomberg Green. Deloitte projected that 130 million e-bikes would be sold worldwide between 2020 and 2023. In Europe, it’s predicted that twice as many bikes as cars will be bought each year by 2030. This trend has the potential to transform urban transit according to David Zipper, a visiting fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and a specialist in new forms of mobility technology. According to Zipper’s report in the Times, the rapid development of lithiumion batteries along with the worldwide resurgence of interest in urban cycling, as well as bike-sharing programs, are fuelling the transition.
Lanrick Jr Bennett Announced as Toronto’s First Bicycle Mayor
Carbon 70 was the winner of the Design & Innovation Award eMTB in 2021. “Many brands claim that their eMTB has the same ride sensation as a conventional mountain bike, but we’ve yet to find one with as much truth behind their words as Rocky Mountain,” claimed the judges. “At the heart of this bike is the brand’s own motor, and the Altitude Powerplay demonstrates a level of off-road handling that we’ve not encountered on an eMTB thus far; in terms of agility, it’s no understatement to say that this Rocky has set a new benchmark.”

In January, Porsche AG secured 20% of the shares of e-bike drive manufacturer Fazua GmbH, including an option to acquire enough shares to take over completely. For Porsche, this move represents a consistent push in their e-mobility strategy. In November 2021, Porsche acquired a majority stake in Croatian e-bike manufacturer Greyp Bikes. The sports car manufacturer’s venture capital arm, Porsche Ventures, held a stake of around 10% in the company since 2018 and invested in Greyp at Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay

I will work with employers to adopt cycling commuter programs and BIAs in the city to engage in bikefocussed activities, with an emphasis on reaching BIPOC and under-served community groups. “In my work as Managing Director at 8 80 Cities, I am committed to building cities that work for everyone,” said Bennett. Based in Amsterdam, BYCS is a global NGO guided by the belief that bicycles transform cities and cities transform the world. It launched the Bicycle Mayor program in June of 2016, and there are currently 134 bicycle mayors in cities around the world.

Banff Announces Rebate of Up to $750 on eBikes
In June 2021, Vélo Canada Bikes organized Canada’s very first national bike count, which saw over 1,000 volunteers in 68 communities counting 79,735 cyclists. The study targeted 14 pilot communities to get a better understanding of what cycling looks like across the country.
In early March, the town of Banff, with about 8,000 residents, announced a rebate of up to $750 on pedal-assist bikes that have a purchase price under $5,000 as part of a new Residential Environmental Program. An even higher rebate is offered to Banff Access Program members (i.e., Tier 1 = up to $1,000, Tier 2 = up to $900). The financial rebates are to help residents save water and energy, as well as to support transportation methods that help protect the local environment.
The return of the MEGA VOLT to the pristine and beautiful Cowichan Valley is set to take place June 3-5, 2022. This is North America’s only multi-day eMTB fest, staged by the BC Bike Race in cooperation with the Cowichan Trail Stewardship Society. The event will remain very much the same as last year, just tweaked to maximize the riding time and boost the fun factor. The opening day Consistency Enduro, based on last year’s course, will be lengthened. The second day will be a doubleheader like last year with two mid-length shred sessions. The final day will be more of a social fun ride to maximize the exploration of the Cowichan Valley’s famous trails.

Toronto’s NRBI eCargo Bike Delivery Success With Plans to Expand

In April 2021, two entrepreneurs, Ivan Waissbluth and Nick Gaganiaras, launched NRBI (Near By), a new zerocarbon e-cargo bike delivery service in Toronto. Their passion to provide state-of-the-art logistic solutions for local businesses saw immediate success. Waissbluth, a cargo bike rider himself, owns Bespoke Butchers, an organic butcher shop, and Gaganiaras had a successful career in logistics and supply chains. When the two became friends, the wheels began to turn. In fall 2021, Dave Edwards, a passionate rider and former banker, joined NRBI as a part-time delivery driver. Knowing Toronto’s cycling scene via his role with social media sites such as @BikeTO, @CargoBikeTO and others, he became a partner. “Reactions on the street are very positive — people are mostly blown away when they see you riding a cool e-cargo bike,” said Edwards. “They love receiving their goods by bike and they’re impressed.” While companies also like the carbon-free aspect, they need and want to see fast, safe and efficient deliveries, that save money and make customers happy, noted Edwards. NRBI currently has four e-cargo bikes on the road, each with massive capacity. Two units are eye-catching aquamarine-coloured Pro Trike Centaurs made by Babboe, based in Holland, with 850 litres of cargo space
(up to 450lbs). “They were secured via Fourth Floor Distribution which is a sister company of Curbside Cycle, a local bike shop in Toronto,” commented Edwards. Their other two e-cargo bikes are black Triobike Cargo Big units out of Denmark, which were acquired through Allo Vélo, the Canadian distributor based in Montréal, which also operates as a retail bike shop and has a second outlet in Vancouver. NRBI has been making steady progress and plans to set up another hub in the west end of the city. Their biggest challenge has been juggling the operation and maintaining flexibility while trying to expand with such a small crew of five and a fleet of four e-cargo bikes as demand keeps growing. And while there are new bikes lanes and other improvements in Toronto, Edwards welcomes the changes but adds that there’s so much more to do in the city from snow clearance, to fixing bike paths that end abruptly, to route shortcomings around construction zones, etc. What lies ahead for NRBI are multiple hubs around Toronto, 20-30 e-cargo bikes, and perhaps even other cities in Canada. “We want to get good at what we do here first, but for sure other provinces offer great potential, and there’s nothing wrong with looking south of the border as well,” he concluded.

Ruff Cycles Hires Brian Mogensen as Head of Product Design
Ruff Cycles, based in Germany, announced in Feb. that renowned designer Asbjoerk Stanly Mogensen (also known as Brian Hoehl) is now Head of Product Design. Mogensen will be responsible for expanding the company’s e-bike lineup with new product technologies alongside founder and CEO, Petar Desnica. Ruff Cycles is hoping to see the brand take off in the American market, especially given Mogensen’s input on brands such as Pininfarina, Diavelo and Bugatti. For more than 15 years, he worked for Accell Group as Design Director. “When Brian signalled his interest in joining Ruff Cycles, I did not hesitate,” said Desnica. “We look forward to his collaboration on upcoming projects to continue to turn heads.”
eCargo Bike Sales Boom up 36% in Germany
According to Germany’s bicycle industry association, Zweirad-IndustrieVerband (ZIV), more than 100,000 cargo bikes were sold in 2020, a 36% growth compared to the previous year’s reports. ZIV forecasts another bumper year in 2021, and “last mile” deliveries by cargo bikes are changing the look of streets in many German cities — electric trikes with a capacity of 350kg are becoming the norm. This coincides with a recent Dutch study that concluded that cities are better served by lighter, smaller vehicles, noting, “E-cargo bikes are a great alternative for some 20% of all delivery vans currently operating in large cities.”

PeopleForBikes and Call2Recycle Launch First eBike Battery Recycling Program in USA The genesis of this new program began in December 2019 when Call2Recycle participated in a discussion with PeopleForBikes members on the topic of battery recycling. Simultaneously, Call2Recycle began developing a similar program for the Canadian market that commenced in January 2021. The early learning from what was being built for Canada became the foundation for the new collaboration with PeopleForBikes in spring 2021. Not only a first for e-bikes, the program represents the first of any electric transportation sector to unite under a single battery recycling solution in North America. In September 2020, according to the World Bank Blogs, the rise of cycling in the Philippines due to the pandemic led the national government to allocate more than 22 million USD towards active mobility infrastructure. This investment resulted in the country’s largest bike lane construction program in its history — almost 500 kilometres across Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and Metro Davao were constructed in less than a year. Several financial partners assisted to form a World Bank team. With additional support from the Netherlands Embassy, a series of training sessions were undertaken on topics such as Dutch cycling infrastructure principles, which are considered among the best in the world. The new cycling infrastructure was designed to meet the highest safety standards, as the World Bank team not only worked with road safety experts but also involved the community, including persons with disabilities, women and the elderly.

Olympic Gold Medallist Boardman Leads Active Travel UK

The UK will invest £5.5 million of new funding for cycling and walking infrastructure led by Olympian Chris Boardman, the national commissioner of the government’s new cycling and walking body, Active Travel England (ATE), which launched January 24, 2022. ATE will be responsible for driving up the standards of cycling and walking infrastructure and managing the national active travel budget, awarding funding for projects that meet the new national standards set out in 2020. The new funding includes a £300,000 top-up to e-cargo bike schemes, £3 million to improve cycling infrastructure around train stations, and £2.2 million to explore active travel on prescription schemes. ATE’s establishment follows the government’s unprecedented commitment of £2 billion towards cycling and walking.

Accell Group, a European market leader in e-bikes and the second largest in bicycle parts and accessories, has been acquired by an investment fund consortium led by KKR, the largest private equity investor in digital services and technology in Europe, as well as Teslin, holding approx. 10.8% of the shares, for approximately 1.56 billion Euros. The offer is subject to certain customary conditions and is expected to be completed this year in late Q2 or early Q3. Well-known bicycle brands in Accell’s portfolio include Haibike, Winora, Ghost, Batavus, Koga, Lapierre, Raleigh, Sparta, Babboe and Carqon, while XLC is their brand for bicycle parts and accessories. The company employs approximately 3,100 people in 15 countries worldwide. Accell Group is acquired by investment fund consortium.

ActiveTO Bike Lanes in Toronto to Become Permanent
On Nov. 25, Toronto’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee voted to make ActiveTO bike lanes on Bloor, Danforth and University Ave. permanent. On Dec. 15, City Council approved the motion to ensure safe, separated and connected cycling corridors remain in place permanently across Toronto. In addition, 100 kilometres of new cycling routes are planned for installation over the next three years (2022 to 2024). Bikeway installation in Toronto over the past three years has been unprecedented. From 2019 to 2021, including ActiveTO routes, 65 kilometres of new bikeways have been installed, as well as 47 kilometres of upgrades and enhancements to existing cycling routes. Toronto is home to more than 2.9 million people. “Making the ActiveTO bike routes permanent, with plans to expand the network even further where it makes sense, is the right and responsible thing to do, and it will help more people get around our city safely by bike,” said Mayor John Tory.

Upway in France Raises €5 Million for On-Line Marketplace for Used eBikes
A new French start-up called Upway raised €5 million in a seed round from Sequoia Capital and Global Founders Capital to build a marketplace for second-hand e-bikes, reports Tech Crunch. The company, which has a warehouse in Gennevilliers near Paris, buys e-bikes from both customers and companies. A team of five technicians checks and repairs e-bikes as needed, and then Upway lists and sells the e-bikes on its website. On average, bikes are 20% to 50% cheaper than their original cost, and Upway offers many familiar brands such as Moustache, VanMoof, Cowboy and Canyon. All e-bikes come with a one-year warranty.

Prague Announces Free Bike Share as Part of City’s Public Transport System
In the new year, Prague Integrated Transport announced that following a successful pilot project, it is permanently offering holders of a public transport pass free access to shared bicycles for short-term bike rides. Launched last October, the pilot program saw 7,200 passengers take advantage of bike-sharing despite the cold winter months. A total of around 72,000 individual bike rides were recorded. “The combination of shared bicycles and public transport makes sense and brings additional benefits to people using public transport for easier and healthier movement around Prague,” said Adam Scheinherr, Prague Councillor for Transport in a press release.
Toronto City Council has approved participation in a provincial micromobility pilot that will permit the use of cargo e-bikes weighing more than 120 kilograms to help meet the increasing demand for local deliveries, reduce greenhouse emissions and contribute to less traffic congestion. Earlier this year, the Province of Ontario introduced a new cargo e-bike regulation and pilot program for municipalities. The pilot requires that municipalities choose to opt-in and change their bylaws to allow for the use of any cargo e-bike weighing more than 55 kilograms on public streets, including bike lanes and cycle tracks. The pilot project allows the City to evaluate the use of all types of cargo e-bikes as well as study the potential impact of this larger micromobility option on traffic congestion, accessibility, road safety and the movement of urban goods. Throughout the pandemic, these cargo e-bikes have supported businesses in meeting enormous demand for local deliveries and have provided a new cycling option for residents and families to get around the city. They have also encouraged the use of fewer delivery trucks by courier, mail and delivery companies on city streets.
Following a recent study, the German Ministry of Transport plans to add up to 1.5 million additional bicycle parking spaces at train stations by 2030. To accelerate the expansion of the necessary bicycle parking facilities and bicycle parking garages within the existing framework, a special City & Country program will provide municipalities and stakeholders like Deutsche Bahn with information on all important aspects of bicycle parking at train stations, including targets and funding. “We should make it as attractive and easy as possible

The International Cargo Bike Festival (ICBF) recently announced that their 2022 event will be held October 27-29 as they’re teaming up with World of eMobility, a hybrid B2B/ B2C trade show. The new collaborative event will be held between Amsterdam and Haarlem near Schiphol Airport at the EXPO Haarlemmermeer venue, a huge glass structure with space for exhibition stands, an indoor test track and conference facilities.
We caught up with ICBF founder Jos Sluijsmans and his business partner Tom Parr for a look back at their amazing journey, their take on the evolution of cycling in Europe and abroad, and how their dreams for the humble cargo bike are now being realized. < 24 > SPRING 2022 eBIKES INTERNATIONAL

Can you please give us a brief background of yourself and Tom Parr? ICBF: I started my company Fietsdiensten.nl in 2004 after deciding to make a living with bicycles and cycling. I began a bike messenger business, gave cycling lessons to people with disabilities, and started organizing debates, discussions and events to promote cycling. Prior to getting involved with cycling, I was a legal adviser and lawyer for about 10 years working in immigration and refugee law, and before that I was a translator/interpreter in Spanish. Tom worked in the cycling industry in London and Sydney before moving to the Netherlands in 2016. He began working with ICBF writing articles and press releases and became involved with organizing the festival soon after. He became my business partner in 2018 and has worked to build the digital and communications side of our operation. These days our social media channels reach around 20,000 followers. How did the idea or inspiration to launch a cargo bike festival in 2012 come together? ICBF: The idea came about by chance as a friend of mine, Hans Kooijman, built a pizza oven in one of my former Christiania cargo bikes. He had his workplace at “De Vasim, a creative work area in Nijmegen with some 40 artists and creative entrepreneurs, and they were organizing their annual Open Door Day. I suggested we invite people with cargo bikes for a gathering that we called the “BakfietsTreffen”. It was a huge success with about 25 cargo bikers in total, from around Nijmegen and other parts of the country such as Zwolle, Wageningen, The Hague, Amsterdam, Groningen, etc. Three representatives from Bafang Electric, an e-bike manufacturer based in China, were among the first visitors.

What was it like during the first few years i.e., receptivity, challenges, attendance? ICBF: It was a lot of fun, and we decided to do it again in 2013. I invited some Dutch retailers to exhibit and the participants of the European Pro-E-Bike project that represented 10 different nationalities, which made it a real international event. We contacted the European Cycle Logistics Federation (ECLF) which was having its first meeting in Cambridge, UK. We’d first met them at the Ecomobiel fair in the fall of 2013 and decided to organize the first ECLF Conference at the “BakfietsTreffen” in 2014. That’s when we changed the name to the International Cargo Bike Festival. There were about 240 attendees at the conference from 25 different countries, with lots of cargo bike industry start-ups, and innovations, which were really inspiring. The catering for the conference and the festival was delivered by cargo bike. This was the genesis for the ICBF to become a unique annual event for the international cargo bike community to come together, exchange ideas, work on initiatives, race, share a glass… and to have fun. Running the festival has always been a challenge regarding the business and financial aspects and still is. As it has grown, there are many more moving parts to organize as well. The pandemic has put cargo bikes into the limelight. How did this affect your plans? ICBF: The pandemic affected our plans in that we could not organize the international event — however, the increased use of cargo bikes was a positive development. It’s really good to see that e-bikes and e-cargo bikes are both booming, and in our opinion it’s just the beginning. We are now more focussed on providing assistance to our network of companies to reach their potential customers.

Tell us about how the #decadeofthecargobike proclamation on Dec 31, 2019 came about. ICBF: Good question. As discussions around fossil fuels became more relevant in light of the climate change issues, we could see changes happening around us more rapidly. Tom and I had jokingly mentioned it several times as the new decade was about to begin, and eventually Tom made a real thing out of it with the hashtag, etc. The idea was to really inspire people to visualize how the cargo bike could help change our cities within 10 years; and then take the steps to get us there. We’re over 20% of the way through the decade now and there has already been much more progress than we expected, which is great.
What’s your take on the cargo bike scene in North America? ICBF: We know things are developing in North America as well, but our knowledge of the cargo bike scene there is more sparse. We’re in contact with several people that are part of the cargo bike sector for instance Sam Starr, who has a consulting business in Vancouver, and Darnel Harris with Our Greenway in Toronto. We are working on the establishment of a North American Cargo Bike Expertise & Innovation Centre in Toronto. TRIPLE CROWN FOR HEART
The iconic North Shore Triple Crown is a rite of passage for cyclists in Vancouver, as the well-known challenge features tackling three North Shore mountains in a single day, including Seymour, Grouse and Cypress. Starting and ending at sea level, you can traverse the Triple Crown via road or mountain-bike trails, with various possible itineraries that range from 50-80km depending on the route. Usually done from east to west, it covers over 2,300m elevation (7,500ft). As such, e-bikes are opening the door for more and more riders to take on the challenge. Launched in 2010, the Triple Crown for Heart is held each July, and it offers the opportunity for roadies to ride the three mountains in support of the BC Children’s Hospital Heart Unit. The mountain bike route is mostly on singletrack trails and is much more challenging than the road route. The first

test begins at the base of Seymour up the Old Buck Parking Lot trail to the first switchback on Mount Seymour Road. Climb to the TNT/Cabin trailhead and connect to Dales, Forever After, High School, and then take Bridle Path before hitting Hyannis. Follow up with Fisherman’s trail (south) to the historic Twin Bridges, and then climb your way back up to the LSCR parking lot. Finish up at the End of the Line Café via Rice Lake Road Connector. From End of the Line, make your way to Mountain Hwy and climb to the water tower. Follow Mountain Hwy (gravel road) to the entrance of Executioner Trail and flow onto Dreamweaver, and then west to Mosquito Creek once you hit Baden Powell. Descend down Skyline to the Powerline Trail and head west again to the Grouse Mountain Parking lot. Grab a coffee and lunch or rip down Nancy Greene Way to Cleveland Dam. Climbing from Cleveland Dam along Dam Road Path, you will work your way back onto the tarmac. Climb up Glenmore Drive to Bonnymuir, and find your way up to Millstream Road. The Millstream Connector trailhead leads you over to the first switchback on Cypress. Climb on the road to the second switchback, and then head through the west gate onto the gravel access road. A few hundred metres up trail, drop left onto Slippery Canoe. Next up, or down in this case, is Pull Tab which drops you onto Upper Tall Cans. Cut right on BLT gravel road and head down to the Powerstation. Stay right and take the bridge over Cypress Falls, then stay left on the Northwood Connector to Nelson Creek FSR. Head on down to Eagle Heights via the old highway and onto your final destination, Horseshoe Bay. The Triple Crown will test your mettle, both physically and mentally, even on an eMTB. But, once accomplished, you’ll earn bragging rights and have a notable palmarès on your résumé. Keep in mind that there’s no rush, as you can take on each mountain separately and build up to claiming the Triple Crown epic adventure — or receive help from locals who know the terrain. Founded in 2017, the 750-mile Empire State Trail (EST) showcases the state of New York’s scenic landscapes and rich history. Touted as the nation’s longest multi-use state trail, the fabulous EST route is a co-branding initiative encompassing more than 20 regional trails that are part of the Hudson Valley Greenway Trail, the Erie Canalway Trail, and the Champlain Valley Trail. Launched to promote outdoor recreation and encourage healthy lifestyles, the iconic Trail is composed of mainly off-road segments that are generally flat, and it welcomes cyclists and walkers of all ages and abilities to experience the Empire State’s urban centres, village main streets, rural communities, and diverse history, The Hudson Valley Greenway was created in 1991 in part to establish a network of multi-use trails along both sides of the Hudson River and consists of a land trail and a water trail for paddling and boating. From Battery Park in Manhattan to Albany, the 200km section of the EST is primarily on Bike Route 9, a north-south on-road bicycling trail.
Connecting Albany and Buffalo the Erie Canalway Trail follows one of the world’s most famous man-made waterways for 350km across upstate New York for a unique heritage getaway. A series of recommended family-friendly trips offer round-trip routes that range from 3km to 22.5km. The trail offers easy access to communities along the way, with plenty to see and do. The Champlain Canalway Trail is the second-longest of four canals in New York State and runs 200 miles north from Albany via an on-road bicycle route to the Canada border at Rouses Point. The route takes cyclists and walkers through a landscape rich in agricultural and cultural heritage, with many points of interest to explore along the way. For the most part Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are allowed on the EST trail but some restrictions apply, as guidelines are set by the state or local government entities and continue to evolve. The new Empire State Trail is expected to draw 8.6 million visitors annually, providing a safe, recreational and scenic pathway for local New Yorkers and tourists alike to experience the state’s varied landscapes and amenities. Stretching the length of Europe’s west coast, the amazing and daunting Atlantic Coast EuroVelo 1 (EV1) route covers 11,000km and connects some of the world’s most beautiful seascapes in Norway, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, France, Spain and Portugal. EuroVelo, a cycle tourism initiative spearheaded by the European Cyclists’ Federation, founded in 1983, features a network of cycling routes covering 90,000km throughout Europe. Starting within the Arctic Circle, the EV1 route begins at the northernmost point of Europe in Norway’s North Cape on the Barents Sea coast. Riding south, along the coast where steep mountains rise high above the ocean, you say goodbye to the midnight sun. From Trondheim, the EV1 heads south following the Atlantic Ocean Road, a spectacular route that runs across isles and bridges out to the Atlantic Ocean. You will also see the beautiful Art Nouveau–style city of Ålesund and cross Sognefjorden, the longest fjord in Norway. Next up, it’s on to Scotland and the Celtic Glens for an epic ride starting in Aberdeen. Along the Moray Firth coastline, you might spot the world’s most northerly colony of Bottlenose Dolphins. The route links Inverness, the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands, with the port city of Glasgow via the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Parks. Head for the Ayrshire coast and seaside towns and then inland to the countryside around Galloway Forest Park. Then travel to Stranraer for the ferry to Ireland. Starting in the northeast corner, you’ll explore 250km of wild and rugged coastline in Northern Ireland and continue another 2,100km within the Republic of Ireland. These segments primarily follow coastal trails and roads, much of which are aligned with the popular Wild Atlantic Way (WAW) touring route, passing through many Irish cities outside of Dublin. Further south at the ferry port of Rosslare Harbour in the county of Wexford, you’ll cross the Irish Sea to Wales and join the Celtic Trail along the southern Welsh coast and on to Bristol, England. EV1 follows France’s longest marked cycling trail, La Vélodyssée, which lets you experience more than 1,200km of wild beauty, from Roscoff and Brittany, down the Atlantic coast to Hendaye and the border with Spain. The last 400km section of the amazing EV1 route heads north along the Portuguese coast from the shores of the Algarve in the south and crosses many UNESCO World Heritage Sites via rolling roads and quaint villages bursting with colours. Like many cities, Halifax is seeing a strong uptick in cycling due to the pandemic. The city is now focussed on the creation of a connected “all ages and abilities” (AAA) cycling network to double the modal share of bike-to-work trips made by 2031. Halifax plans about 20km of protected bike lanes in the total city centre network.
Halifax boasts a total of 201km of its planned vision of 300km of separated multi-use facilities, which was a key goal of its Active Transportation Priorities Plan back in 2014 to connect communities. Another 70km of painted on-street bike lanes are slated for expansion. Another priority for Halifax is building 57km of AAA bikeways in the Regional Centre of the municipality, as the city recognizes that safety is a key concern for residents. Of the 23km now completed, about 5km are protected bike lanes, which will be expanded to approximately one-third of the total city centre network. “Developing an AAA bicycle network within the Regional Centre offers the highest potential to attract new riders,” says David MacIsaac, the Manager of Active Transportation at Halifax Regional Municipality. The first segments of protected bicycle lanes were installed as a pilot project in 2015. The Halifax Cycling Coalition (HCC), a local advocacy group, also launched a bicycle parking corral as a pilot project in the summer of 2015. Since then, five additional corrals have been installed at various locations, with each corral providing on-street parking for 10 bicycles, and more are planned. “We have a goal to have all Transit Terminals connected to the bike network,” says MacIsaac. “We also have a fairly robust use of bike racks on buses.” While there is no bike-share program as of yet, MacIsaac says a plan is in the works to present options to Council in 2022. Halifax has come a long way since its first Bicycle Plan back in 2002, and it is ramping up to realize the city’s potential to create mobility options that coincide with its climate change goals and the security of its residents.

Chicago plans its biggest bike lane expansion ever, with 160km of new and upgraded bike lanes by the end of 2022.

In Sept. 2021, Chicago announced its biggest bike lane expansion in the city’s history, with 160km of new and upgraded bike lanes planned by the end of 2022. A $17 million investment through Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot’s 5-year Chicago Works capital plan will fund the operation. As part of the announcement, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) released a Community Cycling Network Update outlining the city’s initiatives. The goal is to have a 625-mile cycling network, as envisioned in the Chicago Bicycle Plan 2020. As of the end of 2021, the city boasts 397 miles of bikeways including 55 miles of off-street trails, and an on-street network of 342 miles, of which 35.2 miles are protected bike lanes. Chicago has seen steady increases in bicycle commuting, from approximately 2,000 commuters back in 1980 to nearly 24,000 commuters in 2018, for a current cycling modal share of 1.8 percent. Chicago also boasts 16,500 bike racks — which may be a record in the USA — along with 36 bike corrals that each park 10 bicycles. In 2013, Chicago launched Divvy, a popular bike-share program that has seen over 7 million rides in the past two years. It set monthly records of over 800,000 riders in both July and August, and registered over 4 million rides in 2021, a new record as well. The Active Transportation Alliance, a Chicago-based advocacy group working to create safe and equitable transit options, launched the city’s first bicycle map back in 1991. In 2014, it initiated a Family Friendly Bikeways campaign and reported that cycling has roughly tripled, with 125,000 daily bike trips. Their current “Bikeways for All” campaign proposes 180 miles of new low-stress biking routes. Chicago’s Streets for Cycling Plan, a blueprint to provide safe and comfortable cycling, includes bicycle accommodation within half a mile of every resident, a
greater number of bikeways where more people live, and an increased amount of infrastructure to create a strong backbone of cycling mobility options. Chicago has come a long way since the city’s first Bicycle Advisory Council was formed in 1991 followed by its first Bicycle Plan launched in 2000, and it looks destined to be a cycling leader in the USA.

In early January, the Metropolitan City of Milan unveiled its stunning Cambio Bicycle Mobility Plan, valued at €225 million, to fund 750km of bicycle paths to achieve a 20% modal shift toward cycling. The strategic and multi-faceted project will see separated bike lanes integrated across 24 different lines that include four circular super-cycle paths, 16 radial pathways of a capillary network that connect the super-cycle paths across the territory, along with four long-distance greenways. The new plan more than doubles the existing 298km network. In April 2020 as the pandemic hit, Milan’s cycling-friendly mayor, Giuseppe Sala, began several initiatives, first banning cars from 35km of inner-city streets. Then he introduced an ‘Open Streets’ plan to rapidly increase infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians, creating about 35km of new bike lanes while lowering the speed limit to 30kph in many traffic zones. Sala also reclaimed 22,000 sq metres of vehicle lanes for 38 neighbourhood plazas. Support for the new measures was validated as he won re-election in Oct. 2021. The 2022 Cambio Bicycle Mobility Plan coincides with Milan’s strategic Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) that aims to integrate all forms of mobility, rail, and road transport to respond to the concrete needs of citizens and businesses. Under the new Cambio initiative, each bicycle path will be less than 1km from 80% of public destinations such as schools, commercial centres, health centres, local public transport stops, hospitals, etc. Equipped with optical fibre cables for smart solutions, the innovative super-cycle paths will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure and include low-impact motion-sensor lighting, < 40 > SPRING 2022 eBIKES INTERNATIONAL

Launched in 2008, Milan’s bike-sharing service, BikeMi, comprises 325 stations with 4,650 bicycles, including 1,000 electric bicycles and bikes for children. The plan is to expand the program throughout the city’s 133 municipalities and create a single-ticket concept that encompasses all means of public mobility and transport. An incentive program for mobility vehicles including e-bikes was established in 2020, but more funding is needed to re-engage the program. Milan is showing leadership like Paris in taking bold steps to make cycling a safe, sensible and commonplace means of transportation, all while improving air quality and social wellbeing.

Raleigh Transit Urban Raleigh Transit Urban is a Performance eBike Ready for Any Commute or Adventure We were excited to test the Transit Urban e-bike, as Raleigh has been associated with cycling since the late 1800s and is a household name. Described as a “performance-oriented city bike” the Transit is a great example of how the trickledown effect is greatly enhancing entry-level and mid-range e-bikes, making quality products more accessible to a larger part of the population while helping to reduce our dependencies on fossil fuels. First off, the Raleigh Transit Urban presents itself as a clean, traditional-looking e-bike, with the looks of something you might expect to pay much more money for. The 6061 aluminum frame conceals the battery neatly in the downtube, while the steel blue colour gives it an attractive, finished appearance. The rear-hub motor is almost unnoticeable, as it is concealed behind the large 34T Shimano MegaRange cog and disc rotor. The mountain-bike-inspired 27.5” x 2.4” puncture-resistant tires add to the overall appeal — something like fat bike meets vintage mountain bike. More kudos were in order when loading it into my vehicle for
transport, as the 23kg weight didn’t break my back. The Transit is equipped with a microSHIFT 7-speed shifter and rear derailleur to help dial in the perfect cadence for a variety of terrain. The Jak-8 cable disc brakes also lived up to their task to manage speed and delivered stopping power on demand for confident riding. Powered by a Shengyi 250-watt, 36-volt rear hub drive motor, the 10.5Ah frame-integrated battery is neatly concealed in the downtube. The built-in cadence sensor activates the motor when pedalling, while a bar-mounted controller manages the five levels of assistance, with an LCD display that indicates speed, distance travelled and battery life. Out on the road, the Raleigh Transit Urban was immediately fun, predictable and reliable, exceeding my pre-ride expectations. As with any new e-bike, it took a few minutes to become familiar with the controls, and activating the motor is a 2-step process of pushing a small button on the left side of the downtube, and then holding the power button on the LCD controller for a couple of seconds. The initial slight “whirr” of the motor became unnoticeable when underway.

The traditional fit of the frame keeps your position slightly forward, which is nice and adds to the feeling of a more performance-oriented ride. The pedal assist functioned well, with Level 4 allowing me to cruise at the maximum support speed of 32kph on the flats, while Level 5 did the job to easily get up most of the steeper hills. Once in tune with the Transit, I was able to adjust the slight delay in activating the motor from pedal onset when starting on steep gravel paths. Using the top three power-assist levels, the battery range was around 70km, which can be extended when using less assist. Another bonus is that the Transit Urban e-bike is lightweight and can be ridden without the pedal assist — so no worries if you drain the battery. The front and rear integrated lights are connected to the main battery which allows for reliable, on-demand lighting, a
The controls are at your fingertips… let’s ride. nice touch for safety and navigating at night. Living in Canada’s “Wet Coast,” the first thing I would add are fenders, followed by a rear rack. Fortunately, the frame comes with integrated mounts, so accessorizing it should be a breeze. The wide, 27.5” x 2.4” tires help absorb road chatter on the rigid frame, and for longer adventures you might consider swapping out the saddle. The more I rode the Raleigh Transit Urban e-bike, the more I liked it and felt it lived up to its pedigree and mandate as a “performance-oriented city bike.” If you’re in the market for a new e-bike, it’s nice to know that the great trickledown trend is delivering a better quality ride — and having a recognized name like Raleigh gives you a slice of cycling history to boot. The fat-biking craze hit me a few years ago, so there was a great deal of anticipation and excitement this winter when given the opportunity to review iGO Electric’s eXtreme 3.0 e-fatbike. Founded in 2006, iGO Electric was one of the first Canadian companies to take its passion for cycling and join the e-revolution. Today, iGO designs and produces e-bikes for all aspects of cycling including urban, road, mountain, cargo and, of course, fat bikes. Their dealer in Gatineau, Vélo et Mobilité Électrique, helped facilitate the pick-up on a snowy day in December. While transferring the eXtreme 3.0 to my vehicle, I was reminded that e-bikes are much heavier than regular bikes — this e-fatbike is hefty at about 70lbs — so plan accordingly, including the selection of your car rack. Equipped with huge 26” x 4.5” Kenda Juggernaut Sport fat tires, the iGO eXtreme 3.0 looks and feels like it can go anywhere, and over anything. The Bafang 500-watt rearhub geared motor, with 80Nm of torque, is powered by a Samsung 576Wh lithium-ion battery that offers a range of 55km (34 miles). The Shimano Altus 1 x 8-speed drivetrain features Tektro Aries mechanical disc brakes with 180mm rotors to bring everything to a full stop — all of which worked very well. Other nice touches include integrated front and rear lights, sturdy and eXtra wide 110mm aluminum alloy fenders, as well as a heavy-duty rear rack that can carry 25kg or about 55lbs of cargo. The rider can turn the system on and select from nine assist levels from the easy-to-read display. The unit also
turns the lights on and off, controls the walk-assist, and even provides a USB port to charge your phone or other accessories. An integrated throttle will get you to the maximum assist-speed of 32kph in a flash without pedalling, which was

appreciated during several outings. As a safety feature, both brake handles will cut the power assist. The iGO eXtreme 3.0 was a hoot to debut at our annual family New Year’s Day run, a 3-5km event on a wet and slushy day. It was great fun scooting on the e-fat bike from one group to another for camera shots, while the bike’s full fenders kept me dry. On several occasions doing errands in town, the iGO eXtreme 3.0 was a great companion for picking up groceries or take-out food. The lockable and removable battery is also a nice eXtra measure of security when needed. It was time for a spin on my local fat bike trails at Bennies Corners, and the eXtreme 3.0 was great fun and did not disappoint. On a soft-snow day, I aired down the tires a bit for traction and hit the trails, keeping the assist at Level 3 for optimum acceleration in the woods. The throttle was a nice touch to help me get moving following a dab or two, and it also saved me a few times on the hills — keep in mind that the throttle delivers max power regardless of what assist level you’re on. The RST suspension kept things smooth and could use a bit more travel for my liking. The lockout feature is useful in urban areas and on smoother terrain. While the eXtreme 3.0 is close to 3X heavier than my personal fat bike, the additional heft is not as apparent as you would think when riding — but as noted, when loading and
unloading, keep in mind it’s a bit of a beast and you’ll appreciate the walk-assist. I managed a fun 30km trek to Ottawa and back, using close to half the battery — the range is 55km on a full charge. This was impressive, as it is quite hilly, and I was using fairly high assist as well as the throttle amidst snowy conditions. This would absolutely be my go-to e-bike for commuting a few times a week. As conditions warmed up, I was able to take the eXtreme 3.0 for a longer ride out on the Trans Canada Trail (TCT), which is only a few rideable kilometres away. Again, the terrain was no match for this e-fat bike, bringing smiles around every bend from start to finish. As with all e-bikes, keep in mind that the operating temperature range has limits. While the iGO eXtreme 3.0 User Manual states -25°C is the limit, there are factors to consider, such as the wind-chill, so it’s best to do your own testing if you like riding in the bitter cold. We found that at around -20°C, we had to bring the battery inside to warm up. In conclusion, iGO’s new eXtreme 3.0 is a feature-rich e-fat bike that can do it all for errands, recreation, commuting and e-adventures to boot. Quest Mid Motor Quest Mid Motor is a Fun Urban eBike with Lots of Extras for Added Value
We were excited to test the Quest Mid Motor e-bike and try out their consumer-direct delivery process as more and more bike companies, both small and large, are now offering this option. Quest is based in Montréal and is a sister brand of iGO Electric, which boasts 15+ years of experience in the electric bicycle market. Launched four years ago, Quest e-bikes are also available through London Drugs in Canada, either in-store or via their website, and then picked up boxed, with minimal assembly required at home. The Quest box is a bit larger than your average bike box and weighs 60kg, so be prepared with the right vehicle as well. Assembly can take 30–60+ minutes depending on how handy you are. The e-bike comes with all the tools needed for assembly, and there is a helpful on-line video to walk you through every step. The QR code on the hangtag also links you to the assembly video. Once the bike is out of the box and the cardboard and plastic have been removed, the first step is to attach the handlebar which has all of the shifters, brake levers and

The stem’s front plate needs to be removed with four bolts, then the handlebar must be put into the stem with the bolts reattached. The front wheel is next. The front quick release needs to be inserted and then the front wheel put into place. The video doesn’t mention that you have to remove the space that is temporarily inserted in the front disc brake calliper. This piece of plastic keeps the brake pads separated during transport and must be removed or the front disc brake rotor won’t insert properly — so make sure that you take it out. (Quest is aware of this and the instruction video is being updated.) The fenders, and then the front light, have to be mounted with a few bolts. The pedals are the last thing to put on. Once complete and everything is checked for tightness, all that is left is getting the fit just right for seat height. The Quest Mid Motor model is nicely equipped with plenty of added-value extras. The 6061 aluminum frame is lightweight and durable, and it comes in one size which will fit most people. It also features a dropped top tube for added

The 350-watt Quest-branded 36V mid-motor provides 81Nm of torque along with nine levels of power, including walk assist. All functions are controlled via the handlebar display that’s backlit and adjusts to the surrounding light levels, making it easy to read. You will be able to see the speed, odometer, battery charge level, trip timer and power assist level. The buttons are easy to reach and require a positive click to change the power levels so there are no shifts in error. The walk assist is a great feature to get the bike out of the garage and makes it easy to assist in pushing the bike whenever needed. Equipped with a Suntour NEX suspension fork with 50mm of travel, the drivetrain features an 8-speed Shimano Altus rear derailleur and shifters along with Tektro hydraulic disc brakes for accurate stopping power. Great added features include an adjustable stem, a Selle Royal Nuvola saddle, fenders for riding in all kinds of weather, a front light that connects to the battery system and comes on when the outside light level gets low, a rear red light built into the rear rack, a bell and a kickstand. The Quest Mid Motor rides as a city bike should, with an upright position that’s comfortable. The contact points of the saddle and grips are very rider-friendly, and the front shock really helps to smooth things out, also allowing you to maintain control should you hit a pothole. The braking is also strong and smooth with the e-bike
slowing down evenly when you feather the brake levers, but it also delivers promptly when needed to stop for an unexpected obstacle. The pedal assist performed smoothly with an easy acceleration that makes you feel like you have a strong tailwind, making small hills melt away. The power assist levels max out at 32kph, and the throttle was a nice touch to power you home after a tiring ride without having to pedal. The mid-motor position helps keep the bike stable through corners which can be taken at speed, as the Quest tracked well and also accelerated out of corners well. When descending, the weight of the e-bike helps it pick up speed quickly. The tracking was smooth and comfortable without any hesitation or concern. While I never ran out of power, keep in mind that like most e-bikes, the weight is quite noticeable when pedalling without assist — hills that were a breeze will suddenly become quite challenging. The claimed battery range of 75–90km hit the mark in our tests, and when storing the Quest in the garage with the temperature around 0°C, the battery still held the charge, powering up every time without hesitation. The Quest Mid Motor is good value and a fun ride on bike paths or city streets around town. Equipped with everything that a rider could need, it’s quiet and reliable with the motor assist barely noticeable, making it easy to leave the car in the driveway when there’s an errand to run. Momentum PakYak E+ New Momentum PakYak E+ eCargo Bike Outperforms on All Terrain The popularity of e-cargo bikes is quickly growing, both for personal and commercial use, given their ability to carry large loads, additional passengers, and pack enough supplies for multi-day adventures. We were excited to get the opportunity to test the new Momentum PakYak E+ via Giant Bicycles, the parent company. One of the recent entries into this category, our test e-cargo bike arrived in December amidst some tough winter conditions, but like its Himalayan namesake, the PakYak E+ was designed to brave the elements and was up to the challenge. Powered by a mid-mounted Yamaha SyncDrive Pro motor, the 250-watt drive system produces 80Nm of torque with up to 360% of assistance. The integrated 500Wh Panasonic battery securely locks in the downtube and has a range of up to about 100km. For extended trips, an auxiliary battery can be neatly carried in the handy lockable storage box behind the seat tube. The easy-to-use bar-mounted RideControl Dash manages the five levels of assist, including auto mode. The full colour LED screen is easy to read and easy to navigate during the ride, with the ability to push the buttons even with large winter gloves on. Another nice touch is the USB charge port.
The PakYak E+ features Smart Assist technology that uses six sensors to factor in ride speed and terrain to deliver seamless power integration. Only found in the SyncDrive series, it allows riders to focus on enjoying the ride without manually adjusting. The PakYak E+ is the first electric bike featuring the Shimano Nexus Inter-5E rear hub that’s designed for e-bike mid-drive systems to guarantee smooth shifting. The frame and fork are built in-house using Giant’s proprietary ALUXX aluminum, and it comes equipped with Tektro 203mm 4-piston hydraulic brakes for stopping power. Other great features include a low-step frame, dropper seatpost for quick adjustments on the fly, a front cargo basket, a rear rack, integrated Supernova front and rear lights, and a double kickstand. Available in one size, it comes in Traffic Yellow and Patina Green colour schemes, with an extensive range of accessories and carrying options also available. Our test model was accessorized with a PakYak passenger bar and footrests. One of the benefits of e-cargo bikes is that they inspire creativity. The Riese & Müller Load 75 Vario is an impressive utility e-cargo bike that’s designed with safety and luxury in mind. We were excited to test drive Riese & Müller’s Load 75 Vario, a top-end e-cargo bike that features the company’s largest load capacity, along with many great features such as rear suspension. Founded in 1993 by Markus Riese and Heiko Müller in Darmstadt, Germany, the award-winning brand is renowned globally and is currently sold in over 50 countries worldwide. In tandem with the cycling boom, cargo bikes have also seen massive growth around the world, including Toronto, where we’re seeing more and more of them being used both privately and commercially. Every time we roll out on an e-cargo bike test drive, whether it’s summer or winter, it’s amazing how people stop and want to talk about these innovative bikes and express interest in purchasing one.
With the help of R&M’s local dealer, Curbside Cycle, we were set to go, and it’s worth noting that the Toronto shop offers a wide selection of models with varying accessories that reflect the growing interest in this category. The power plant of the Load 75 Vario is the well-proven Bosch Cargo Line Cruise Gen 4 motor, which was specifically designed for e-cargo bikes. It offers up to 400% energy support while providing up to 85Nm torque that delivers plenty of get-up-and-go even when loaded. The 500Wh PowerPack has a 100km range and can be doubled up with an extender. A nice touch is the charging port on the bike — you can just plug it in without removing the battery. The Bosch Intuvia computer interface was very userfriendly with four different assist levels toggled by a plus or minus button. The impressive Enviolo 380 internally geared rear hub design, with grip shifter, offers fluid no-step shifting even at a complete stop. The durable Gates Drive CDX belt is also low-maintenance and can handle 30,000km of riding before needing replacement. We loved the smart incorporation of the X-Fusion Glyde rear suspension and the 70mm Suntour Mobie front suspension fork, which handled bumps both large and small. The Load 75 features a low cargo bed design that’s rated up to a maximum of 100kg and becomes more stable as weight is added. On puncture-resistant Schwalbe Big Ben Plus tires, stopping all that rolling mass was a breeze, especially with the Tektro TRP hydraulic brakes that are supplied with large 203mm rotors. Made with children in mind, it was no surprise that following our test ride, the kids came back grinning and demanding more trips. The set-up accommodates three kids with two smaller seats side-by-side at the back of the cargo box facing forward, and a bigger third seat up front that faces back. The larger front seat has a footwell that accommodates children’s feet when seated and also allows the seat to be stowed. All child seats feature 5-point seat belts. Conversion from child-carrying mode to cargo mode is quick and easy. The smaller seats come out with the simple flip of one quick release, and the larger front seat with belts comes out as one. The front seat can also remain in place while carrying cargo. The cargo box area offers various options from low/ high sidewalls, to a rain/cold weather/sunroof clear plastic children’s cover with air vents, to a tarpaulin or a hard waterproof/lockable cover to protect cargo. With the plastic children’s cover installed, we found that loading bags into the e-cargo bike while on a grocery run was made easy via the panel zippers. For carrying larger items, the whole enclosure can be removed in a few minutes without the need for tools. As mentioned, many quality items come stock, including Supernova M99 front/rear lights, SKS mudguards, Abus Shield lock, bungee cords, a rear rack, a bell and a sturdy kickstand. Denmark’s Black Iron Horse The Pony is an Optimal Urban eCargo Bike
The Pony is sleek and nimble with many great features for smart e-mobility in any urban setting. In Denmark, bikes are woven into the fabric of the country’s lifestyle and culture, with massive cycling transportation networks and large-scale secure bike parking. For over 25 years, Black Iron Horse, winner of an IF Design Award in 2020, has been pioneering unique quality cargo bikes from their home in Copenhagen, the country’s renowned cycling capital. When the opportunity came up, eBikes International was stoked to test The Pony model with the help of VeloLifestyle, their dealer in Vancouver. The company’s ethical approach to product development and design is evident in their cargo bikes — most of the materials and parts are first sourced in Denmark and then from other European countries. It’s no surprise that their e-cargo bike’s plastic box is made from 100% locally sourced recycled plastic. Designed for optimal performance in an urban landscape, The Pony is a light 3-wheel e-cargo bike that uses a single rear wheel for unique steering. The in-house welded steel frame is available in a black, blue or green powdercoated finish.
Equipped with Shimano’s STEPS E6100 motor with 250 watts of power and 60Nm of torque, it comes with a 418Wh lithium-ion battery that’s neatly secured in the storage behind the seats with the ability to be charged without removal. The Pony uses Shimano’s Nexus 5 fully automatic Di2 electronic five-speed internal rear hub gearing, along with Shimano mechanical disc brakes, complete with a parking brake, ensuring reliable stopping power and control as needed no matter what the load. Strong double-walled 20” wheels are wrapped in Schwalbe puncture-resistant tires and topped with watershedding fenders. The front-mounted recycled plastic box is lined with custom-built steel for strength and durability, for a variety of cargo and transportation needs, and is rated up to 180kg capacity. There are seats and safety belts to accommodate passengers, with a separate storage area behind and under the seats. Multiple accessories are available, and our test model included a Panorama Hood. But once you adjust to the sensitivity for tracking and turning, you can truly relax and enjoy the ride. The STEPS 6100 display unit was probably the easiest and most intuitive that we’ve tested. Navigating between essential information was a breeze, while battery consumption was always in view. The electronic Nexus 5 internal geared hub, which offered the choice of manual or automatic shifting, was impressive. The automatic shifting mode matches your cadence and speed to select the appropriate gear, and it automatically returns to the easiest gear when you come to a stop. The automatic shifting worked best in flat, urban settings, while the 5-gear manual shifting, activated by buttons on the right side of the bar, worked best on the undulating, openroad commute to the city. My 12-year-old daughter received her debut ride home from school in The Pony, and she quickly bought in. The Panorama Hood was easily removed to accommodate her height, and a comfortable amount of space for her school books and bag behind the seat. The Shimano STEPS E6100 provided plenty of pedalassist, while The Pony felt stable and at home with my 110-pound passenger in the cargo box. The Pony is sleek for a cargo bike at only 88cm wide and manoeuvres well. More bike lanes and cycling rights of way will go a long way to minimize challenges and encourage more of these versatile vehicles into our lives. The Pony was really at home when I headed downtown
with the front box full of bottles for recycling. It navigated the route seamlessly through alleys, side streets and parking lots at a comfortable, controlled speed. The upright seating position provided great visibility, while the quick off-the-line acceleration kept pace with traffic. Once off the bike, it was easy to push The Pony along the sidewalk to the bike rack and use the walk-assist mode when pushing it up a ramp. The parking brake kept The Pony stable on the slight slope. While the stock wheel lock is good for short-term needs, I doubled up and added a heavy-duty Abus Chain Lock to secure it. Using the back of the seat as a handle helped to push and lift the cargo bike, and it also easily accommodated my additional Abus lock, reducing the need to remove the seat when away from the bike. With the front box full of groceries and a dozen Tuborg (my favourite Danish beer), it was time for the return trip home. Along the way I stopped to pick up a pile of firewood left at the side of the road — The Pony was at the ready to accommodate. With rain starting to fall, I quickly and easily re-attached the Panorama Hood. As dusk arrived, the stock front and rear lights provided me with a safe ride home. I easily accomplished everything I would have done with my car, but I had a lot more fun the Copenhagen way.
