Political Ambitions and Positions I understand you were once a Democrat, and changed your party affiliation to Republican. What prompted the change?

Cargill: The Democrats’ stance on the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment is important to me, because with it, you can protect everything else.

So, you were concerned about legislation related to gun control?

Cargill: Absolutely. Gun control started because of a program called “No Guns for Negroes”. It is inherently racist. It all started in an attempt to remove guns from blacks. It goes back to the

Jim Crow era to remove guns from freed slaves and to prevent them from owning firearms. ost seat as Democrat?

L What seat? Travis county constable lost in runoff.

Cargill: I was running for Travis country constable, and that went into a runoff election, and I lost in the run off. re you planning on A running for office again in the future?

Cargill: I have no plans currently.

I think I can do a lot more work where I am right now. I’m a lot more effective in the position I am in now.

side from the Second A Amendment advocacy for which you are so well known, what are your stances on other political issues that might surprise people?

Cargill: I’m also an ordained minister, so I also do weddings.

My great grandfather was a minister as well. But when it comes to firearms, I believe that with this I can protect all of my other rights so long as I can own firearms.

I noticed on your website, that your gun store utilizes solar panels, and that you encourage businesses to use renewables. What are the benefits to using renewables?

Cargill: Absolutely. Not only are we a gun store, but we support protecting the environment as well. I mean, oh my goodness, if this nation was serious about renewable energy, everyone would have solar panels.

We wouldn’t need the power companies and our vehicles would be powered by electricity from the sun. I mean, here I am in Texas it’s 112 degrees today, the sun is shining strong. There’s no need for me to be using electricity from the grid, when I could be using energy from the sun.

hy do you think so W many businesses have been slow to make the transition to renewable energy sources?

Cargill: Because it’s so expensive.

It was expensive for us to power our sign using solar panels; and it would cost even more to power our building. It’s the initial upfront cost that discourages businesses, even though you save money down the road.

Gun Rights I understand you are strong Second

Amendment advocate, in addition to running a successful gun store. Why do you value and what are some of the problems politicians have when attempting to enact legislation related to it?

Cargill: Well, I think that we have enough laws on the books as it is right now. We have background checks, and we should be enforcing those more effectively.

You have to be careful because if you get too into trying to regulate and control, you start affecting the rights of private people and private transactions.

The government shouldn’t be involved in affecting private interactions. We already have laws on the books, but we need to actually prosecute people who violate existing gun laws.

Right now you have people who walk into a gun store to buy guns, who lie on the paperwork to get that firearm; and the government doesn’t prosecute people who lie on the forms. government doesn’t prosecute people who lie on the forms.

If those people were actually prosecuted, there would be a lot less of these people on the street.

o you see it more as S a matter of enforcing the existing laws, and making those existing laws more effective?

Cargill: Absolutely. Parents Self-Defense Incident that was on the News in Atlanta I saw that the issue of self-defense affected you especially personally over the weekend, when someone attempted to break into your parents home, and your stepfather shot the intruder as he was climbing through the

window. Would you care to elaborate on what happened?

Cargill: On Friday morning, a person was avid on getting into my parents’ home. We’re learning now that it may have been as many as four people; but they were intent on getting inside the home. They tried the patio, but couldn’t get in that way. So, they went to my parents’ shed, took out a ladder from the shed, and then proceeded to climb through the window of my parents’ master bathroom on the second floor. One person was coming through the window into my EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1 15

ENTREPRENEUR interview with Mr. Cargill parents’ bathroom, attached to their bedroom. My stepfather heard the noise and went to the bathroom to investigate. When he got to the bathroom, my stepfather saw a person climbing through the window; and he stopped [him]. here was some confusion T here on the news. When I heard the story on the radio, they made it sound as though they had broken in through the roof.

Cargill: No. What happened was, the way the house is set up, you have a roof over the second floor, and a lower roof below on the first floor where they had set up the ladder. Once my dad stopped him and fired that shot, he fell from the ladder back onto the first floor roof. id you teach your D parents self-defense shooting?

Cargill: Absolutely. I believe in making sure that everyone in my family has a plan, in case something was to happen.

God forbid something ever happens. You never wish for anything to happen, but you need to have a plan to be able to protect yourself in case it does. I wanted to make sure my parents had what they needed to protect themselves.

My parents had a security system, security cameras, and a designated safe room in the event something were to happen inside the home, as well as firearms in case 16 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

someone were to get into the home. I taught my parents how to shoot, self-defense, and also home defense. re your parents doing A okay? I assume they’re still a little shook up.

Cargill: Absolutely. The last thing anyone ever wants to do is to take some else’s life. They did everything they could to try and keep people from getting into that house. Who would have guessed that someone would climb onto the second floor, and try to come in through a window on the second floor? This person was very determined to get into the house.

I n the wake of the recent mass shootings, Democrats have tried to push for legislation prohibiting the sale of firearms to people on terror watch lists, but these were voted down in Congress. What is your opinion on pieces of legislation like these?

Are there any merits or inherent weaknesses?

Cargill: Sure. What concerns me is when you ask how do you get on that terror watch list, no one can tell you. When you ask people how do you get off the terror watch list, no one can tell you. That means there’s a secret list that you can be put on, and you can be prohibited from ever owning a firearm; and I think that is unacceptable.

o you think there is a D reasonable compromise to be found between the objectives of Democrats and Republicans in regards to gun rights?

Cargill: It’s a matter of us needing to enforce the laws that are already on the books. If we have a person on a list, and a we know that person is a terrorist, why aren’t they already in jail? he relationship between T black communities and the police seems to have come under a lot of publicity of late. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on how to best ease the tension.

Cargill: Yeah. The thing that concerns me about that was the incident in Minnesota with Philando Castile. This guy was legally carrying a firearm, and was shot and killed in his vehicle. The other [incident] that concerned me, and scared me, was the incident with the therapist who was lying on the ground, on his back, [and] with his hands in the air. And, the officer shot him, with his patient sitting there holding a toy.

That being said, we do actually have a problem with certain law enforcement officials. They need to get back to conflict resolution and not try to escalate situations. They need to be thinking through situations rather than being so quick to go for the gun and start shooting.

should get shot in their vehicle for informing an officer that they are legally carrying a gun. And, there is no reason a person lying on their back should be shot.

There’s no justification for that.

What hurt me the most was that less than twenty four hours later, the police officers’ organization comes out and says, “Well actually, the officer was trying to shoot the autistic guy instead.“ Like that’s better, ya know? That’s not better.

And, we know that’s a lie. Also because, look at what happened.

When they did shoot him, they went over and handcuffed him, rolled him onto his side where he was bleeding, and left him on the ground. So, if he wasn’t the one they were trying to shoot, why did they handcuff him and leave him on the ground? That’s what I think, because I have common sense.

There is a mentality that is out there, and we have to weed it out, where officers are overly aggressive. We have to get officers back to using conflict resolution to deal with certain situations. There are many cases out there where a person should have got shot. I’ll be first person to say it. But, there are many situations out there where you won’t have a single police organization come out and admit a shooting wasn’t justified. And, that is a problem.

They didn’t say anything about the one in Florida or the one in Minnesota. “That’s a bad shooting and that officer should be prosecuted.” That’s what people

are upset about. The police can’t even say the words, “That was a bad shooting.” That is a problem. hat are some common W misconceptions people have regarding firearms?

Cargill: When it comes to misconceptions about firearms, the misconception is that the gun goes off by itself. Guns do not go off by themselves. That trigger happy pull will cause the gun to go off. Someone standing around with their finger on the trigger will cause the gun to go off. A gun is a tool. A person can use a knife to stab people. Or, a person can jump in a truck and run over hundreds of people like we saw last week. A gun is tool that crazy people sometimes use to kill other people.

Business Experience hat are some common W misconceptions people have regarding their sale?

Cargill: When it comes to their sale, there is a misconception about the “gun show loophole.”

There are no loopholes. I am a gun dealer. If I’m selling a gun at a show, I have to do a background check on that person. If I do not do a background check, I’m committing a felony.

A private person can sell a [gun] to another person; they can do that sale anywhere.

I read that demand for your products was so high that you business was essentially forced to start selling online. Have you noticed a change in the demand for guns over the past few years?

Cargill: Yeah. What happened was we had customers calling because of my Bitcoin policy, because you can use Bitcoin to purchase firearms. So, we started selling guns on our website. It did so well that we started a separate gun sales website altogether. We have a totally separate gun webpage where a person can actually purchase firearms from us online. So, a person can buy firearms from us on our website.

Now, when a person goes through our website to purchase a firearm, they [are] either going to pick up that firearm inside our store, where we’re going to do a background check. Or, we’re going to ship that firearm to a gun store, where that gun store will then perform the background check. re there advantages A and disadvantages of using Bitcoin?

Cargill: As far as purchasing a firearm, there really is not. It’s just the idea of using a crypto currency to purchase a firearm. ow long have you been H running your radio show?

Cargill: Over two years.

Gun Specifics hen did you first learn W to shoot?

Cargill: When I went into the military. I went into the military at eighteen years old. I went into the military in 1987, and got EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1 17

ENTREPRENEUR Interview with Mr. Cargill out in 1999. That’s when I first learned gun safety, and about firearms. I still at that time did not have a personal firearm. hat are the most W important aspects of gun safety for people new to firearms?

Cargill: When I went into the military… at eighteen years old… in 1987 and got out in 1999, that’s when I first learned gun safety and about firearms.

I still, at that time, did not have a personal firearm.

Gay Rights

I understand that you are a gay man in a party that is often portrayed as not exactly being sympathetic to gay rights. In your experience, has being gay affected your political aspirations? Has anything changed since you switched your political affiliation?

Cargill: No. No party is going to be perfect. There are a lot of racists in the Democratic party and there are a lot of racists in the Republican party. The fact that we’re living in different cities through out this nation, and the fact that we’re having the police problems that we’re having are problems through out the nations are problems within government. No specific party is a perfect party. No one can look towards me and wonder “why is he in the Republican party?” when you can look at the cities 18 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

that are having these police issues and see that the mayor or the governor are Democrats.

You city counsil members are Democrats, your police chiefs are Democratic.

I take it that you don’t stand for legislation like that proposed in North Carolina which directly prohibits the passage of non-discrimination legislation at the local level?

Cargill: Absolutely not. That’s when you have to stand up and fight. I stand up and fight for issues that matter to me.

Campus Carry just passed today here in Texas, on the anniversary of the University of Texas at Austin shooting. o you see room for the D political parties to grow in regards to LGBT rights?

Cargill: Absolutely. If you listened to Hillary Clinton a few years ago, she’d be singing a different tune than what she’s saying today.

What is your experience with LGBT activism?

Cargill: Once a year, I will donate a gun to raise money for HIV and AIDS testing and… to finding a cure. I also support local organizations here in Austin, called Pink to Schools, where I’ve given away free gun training classes to help members of the LGBT community learn gun safety and be able to protect themselves.

How long have you been with your partner, Bernardo?

Cargill: Nineteen years. We’ve lived in the same house for over fifteen years, that we built from the ground.

Any plans on marriage?

Cargill: Working on it. But, you know we ruin our numbers when we do that. [Laughs.]

We’ve been together for nineteen years, but then we’ll have to say, “We’ve only been married for six months.” But, I am, of course, in favor of gay marriage.

Lighthearted I saw that you play trumpet, tuba, trombone in addition to being a paratrooper, a music instructor in the United States armed forces. Are you still playing music?

Cargill: No! I haven’t picked up an instrument in so long, it’s embarrassing. I was in the Army band. I was an instructor at the Armed Forces School of Music where I taught the music for the marching drills.

Mr. Cargill, I think people like yourself are the future of the Republican party. It was a pleasure talking with you; and I sincerely thank you so much for your time.

ne of the most intriguing individuals that I have spoken to in a very long time is Malcolm “MJ” Harris— entrepreneur, businessman, motivational teacher –what we will call an EBANMAN. He is a funny, interesting, charismatic guy (every adjective said with emphasis). I was truly honored to have the opportunity to interview him.

Malcolm Harris is CEO and founder of National Care Financial Group. If you are not aware of this young entrepreneur or his business, then you will be amazed to learn that he owns one of the largest financial services companies in the U.S. that is geared toward serving minority clients. And if that wasn’t enough, he has only been running his company since 2012.

I recently sat down with this remarkable individual who was willing to share information on his entrepreneurial path, information I thought would be very helpful to our readers.

What were the steps involved to successfully take National Care Financial Group from its initial stages to being one of the top African American owned financial services companies?

MJ: From day one I decided that we would deliver the same quality products and services as any major, non-minority owned financial services firm. Quality takes you far. I also was very honest with myself about my strengths and limitations. I’m 22 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

not good at everything, which is okay. The key is to find out what you can do best, do that and then hire other people to facilitate everything else.

Did you receive outside funding for your company, and what were the 3 most important elements that helped you secure funding?

MJ: I funded my business myself. I got tired of working my corporate job. Although I was making over 6 figures a year, I wanted to be a part of a company that had the same ideals as me. So I invested about $500 out of my own pocket, got my insurance license, and began reaching out to potential clients.

As I made money, I reinvested it back into my business. One

Would you ever consider buying into companies in the same industry if they were about to die out from the market?

MJ: If existing agencies want to be a part of National Care, I would consider allowing them to join on a case-by-case basis if they are looking to merge into the company. I would tell companies not to die out but to try merging with us – in many cases it’s a win-win since we usually pay much higher commissions than other groups.

We want minority agencies to succeed, and we are willing to step in when it makes good business sense for all involved.

What has been the greatest challenge that you have overcome in the developing National Care?

Did you receive outside funding for your company, and what were the 3 most important elements that helped you secure funding? mistake that I teach minority business owners to overcome is spending money they initially make instead of reinvesting those funds into their business so that it can grow. The best choice for anyone doing a side business while working a fulltime job is to live on the money that they make [from their full time job], and reinvest as much as possible from their business’s income to keep the business growing.

MJ: Honestly, it was accepting that just because I am black that doesn’t make me inferior to any other CEO or executive in my industry (which is majority white). I had to accept that I am equally entitled to the same success that many of my counterparts experience.

Once I accepted that I was not inferior, it changed how I ran my business. I took all limits off my mind at that point.

How does your family feel about your success? word MJ: They Love it! I have two areas of success, my a motivational speaking platform which allows me to be seen by over 2 million people monthly and my financial business. My mother still says to this day, “That’s my son!” I come from a blended family, and all of my parents are so proud.

We have all witnessed National Care Financial Group evolve over the past couple of years. Can you talk a little about the initial launch and how it has grown into the business that it is today?

MJ: The Hurston Group was our original name, but was changed to push growth when they went national because people felt like we were a law group and not a financial group. Once I made the choice to make the name change, it became easier for consumers and other individuals to distinguish who we were. My videos and speaking definitely made the company more visible in recent years. We are seen in 50 countries every day.

What was the process like to leave your full time job to become full time in your company?

MJ: On the forth month of being licensed to sell insurance, I made $10,109, which was double of what I was making per month on my full time job. At that time, I was with an agency that wasn’t a fit for me. So my grandmother, who has been an insurance producer since 1981, said “form 23 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

your own and you can do what you want, how you want.”

National Care is a reflection of what I wanted for myself and everyone else. This is why we are very transparent and pay very aggressively, because I like working in ethical environments that compensate well. I designed every part of the company the way I wanted it to be and not based on what sounded good.

How tough or smooth has the path been?

MJ: Running my business is easy because I love it. There have been challenges, like any business. The greater challenge has been understanding how to target a marketplace that has traditionally been unserved by financial services. In a lot of cases, it’s not about just telling them about a product but also educating them to better understand their overall financial health. If someone grew up in a household where they were the first to “do it all” – go to college, become upper middle class, and so on - they might not have the same experience with money as someone who comes from a family that has been middle or upper middle class for multiple generations.

We are not in business to just sell products, but to develop a greater financial literacy within our community.

Who in your life has helped to influence your decisions as an entrepreneur?

MJ: My mother. I grew up watching my mother go from being addicted to alcohol and

drugs when I was very young, going to AA meetings with her, to now having two master’s degrees, is a pastor and working as a clinical social worker focusing on helping military veterans.

That taught me that no current circumstance can define who you can become.

Was the struggle hard for your family?

MJ: No, she was sober by the time I was 4 or 5. She did it all without rehab because she couldn’t afford child care for us. I never saw her journey as a struggle or burden. It was inspirational to me.

What’s one piece of business advice that you would offer a budding entrepreneur?

MJ: Do not solely pursue your passions to create wealth, but pursue your skills. That’s where your wealth is created. My passion was music as a child. I wanted to be a singer. However, my passion for music was not as great as my skill in that area.

Where I was most skilled was speaking, I could always run my mouth and get people’s attention with my words. My mouth is what has built my business. My advice is to push what you are excellent at, not just what you have the most passion within.

Being a role model for many people can be exciting. What had been the most memorable experience that someone has brought to you while working?

share my story on stage for 15,000 people in person and millions around the world. The experience was life changing.

We talked, she hugged me, she was everything! She’s fabulous and truly the real deal.

Now, I know we discussed that we will not directly pry into your personal life, but EBANMAN would love to know more about you. Is there a special guy in your life? And if so, are you married? Any kids or pets?

MJ: I am unmarried [big laugh].

I am very, very happy at this point in my life and look forward to that day. I don’t have pets. I used to have a cocker spaniel and a schnauzer. I travel a lot so I decided to adopt them out to very loving friends who can give them the love and attention they need. Hopefully wedding bells and little ones will be in my future.

Although you are a great businessman, can you indulge us with a little bit about your life. What do you like to do when you are not working?

MJ: Well, I live a very unique and blessed life, which I am truly grateful to have. I am extremely close to my family. I speak to my best friend,

mother, and grandmother every single day. She has been in the insurance industry since 1981 and we are really close. I love to travel to tropical places when I have the time. It surprises people but I am introverted because I make a living in the public eye, so I spend a lot of time at home.

I live between LA and DC, so when I am in either place I am typically with a very small group of people who are closest to me. I consider myself to be very adventurous. I love hiking, going to the beach and just winging it. I live an extremely structured life in business, so my free time is very unstructured and free flowing.

Do you have a favorite past time sport or exploration in which you partake?

MJ: No, I am not athletic at all.

Hints of Progress From the Recent Past

A

n extraordinary thing happened during Connecticut’s 2006 race for the states House of Representatives. In Connecticut’s primarily white second distract, which had been represented by Republicans for almost a decade; voters overwhelmingly decided to elect an openly gay black Democrat to represent them. Jason Bartlett was no stranger to the district. He was a well known entrepreneur in the community who held a degree in political science; and who had run his own mortgage company for more than ten years. By most metrics, Jason Bartlett was an outstanding member of his community. But he had also run for the office twice before, 26 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

and he had come within a hundred votes of winning the seat two years prior. While his loss at the time might have been disheartening, the diminishing gaps between himself and his incumbent opponents were an indication of things to come.

In 2006, Jason Bartlett not only won Connecticut’s second district, but did so by a near ten percent margin to defeat his Republican opponent Phil Gallagher. At the time, Bartlett’s appointment made him the both the highest ranking openly gay black legislator in American politics, a distinction he held until the election of Simone Bell to the Georgia House of Representatives state legislature in 2009. Bartlett’s election

to office in Connecticut was nothing short of truly historic, and it was made even more so when he was reelected for a second term in 2008. However, even after his extraordinary and historic election, Jason Bartlett wasn’t done defying expectations.

Behind closed doors, and away from the public spotlight; Representative Jason Bartlett was raising two sons whom he adopted after the death of his aunt and uncle. In a country that hadn’t even yet decided if homosexuals should be entitled the equal right to marry, and which still hasn’t affirmed their right to adopt; Jason Bartlett was busy being a good father to

POLITICS his two adopted nephews aged 9 and 11. As if being the first openly gay black Representative in American history wasn’t enough, here was the very same man demonstrating by example, that a parents sexuality has nothing to do with their capacity to love and raise children.

By any appreciable standard, the election and the example set by that of Rep. Jason Bartlett demonstrated how to live and lead by example. His tenure in the spotlight of American politics showed that however far progress is from where it should be in the United States; progress may nonetheless be on a slow, inexorable, and invisible march.

In the case of the DNC leaks people aren’t talking about vote manipulation. They’re talking about the Democratic National Committee, the governing body of the Democratic Party, and a supposedly neutral organization deliberately working to sabotage Sanders campaign.

It’s just one of only two political party governing bodies in the United States, actively working with the media to cast the Sanders campaign in a negative light, participating in the editorial process, restricting the Sanders campaign to voter information over a software glitch, deliberately not scheduling debates or scheduling them at odd times, taking advice from Clinton’s lawyers, rewarding financial donations with federal appointments, and inappropriately funneling money gathered into the Clinton campaign.

A

t two o’clock in the morning on June 11th, 2016, Omar Mateen approached the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida carrying two legally obtained firearms: a Sig MCX assault rifle and a Glock 17. Inside Pulse, over three hundred people were dancing and celebrating pride month, while being entertained by transgender performers.

The bar had just served last call drinks, and the celebration that had stretched into the early hours of the morning was set to wind down within the hour. Were it any other night, the club’s patrons would have likely spent that next hour or so filtering out of the club into the humid Florida night, and into the back seats of taxi cabs with friends and loved ones for the quiet ride home.

Instead, nearly a third of those three hundred people inside would either never leave alive, or would have to be carried out by Orlando’s emergency services. What had started off the night before as a celebration of love, culture, and identity would instead be known to the world by sunrise as the single deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, the deadliest attack on the LGBT community in United States history, and the deadliest terrorist attack on American 34 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

soil since Sept 11th, 2001 - all committed by one man, in the span of three hours, with legally obtained firearms.

The tragic irony in all of this was that Mateen gave, on multiple occasions, every possible indication that he was the sort of person who shouldn’t have access to firearms. In 2007, Mateen had been terminated while training to be a security guard for threatening to bring a gun to a training class. In 2011, he was divorced by his

wife for physical abuse and deranged behavior. And, on three separate occasions between 2013 and 2014, he had been interviewed by the FBI for his self-proclaimed ties to terrorist organizations. Despite this, he still held an active firearms license and was able to legally purchase the weapons he used in Orlando.

The shooting in Orlando resulted in public vigils, outpourings of grief, and condolences expressed from both within the United States and other nations around the world. People lined up in such numbers to donate blood to the victims, that the lines stretched around city blocks. Despite the loss, the shooting resulted in nothing by way of substantive political changes that could prohibit another mass shooting from taking place. As has become their custom, conservative politicians refused to hear any policy suggestions that might have prevented the tragedy; instead, they took time away from writing antiLGBT legislation to offer their sincerest prayers for the victims.

n the beginning I decided I would forge my own path.

What a crock of shit that is… though it does sound good.

I never “decided” I would do anything. I simply went about my life, doing what I thought was best for me…trying not to allow other’s perceptions impact my decisions. Now that I am married with two kid, even I have to admit, my life does look like the poster child for the evolution of the gay agenda. Honestly though…it just happened. OK, it didn’t “just” happen…but it feels like it did.

I should at least explain myself.

Have you seen the picture of me and my family? I have the most annoying luck. I have a great family…a husband who thinks the sun rises and sets on me and 2 amazing, gorgeous boys. For that, I deal with people constantly looking at me giving me their nods and smiles of approval. Like really, I am at Costco trying to get juice and snacks for my son’s pre-K class (paying tuition is no longer enough)…I am not there to make a political statement.

My friends and family are worse.

One asked if he could come to our house to watch how we live as if we are a family in a snow globe! Shake us up and we’ll run through the morning routine. Shake again and you can see us cooking dinner. Gay people are more bold. They will say things like “oh you have everything I want” or “I hope to have a husband and kids just like you someday”. Every time I hear that sort of thing, I imagine myself giving them an openhand slap across the mouth in this the grass isn’t always greener sort of way. But I do

recognize that I am fortunate.

I thank God for it. I just don’t care to be told that when I am knee deep in figuring out school schedules or paying the Nanny.

Sometimes I wanna tell them about all the messy tidbits behind my “picture-perfect” life.

Like how I am no longer able to take a shit without an audience or how long it took my boys to learn how to wipe their own asses. Should I share the story of the day I walked into the bathroom and found that one of my children wiped shit all across my white subway tile. How about my self-diagnosed PTSD linked to when my child threw up across the dining room table forcing me to sell it as my cure. Better yet, let me state how I wake at 5:30am and am often, not tired…but exhausted by 9pm and have reached the point in life where when having to decide between sleep and sex…sleep wins all the time!

You see, for as good as my life is, it is hard, messy and very rarely glamorous. I am not complaining...but be careful what you wish for.

Oh and don’t read parenting books…they will make you feel like crap!

He was one of the few men of period to be openly gay, and his short story Smoke, Lillies, and Jade was one of the first works authored by an African-American to unabashedly and unambiguously discuss and celebrate homosexuality.

3. Alice Walker ​Alice Walker is an author who worked as a civil rights activist in the 1960s.

After participating in the March on Washington, she remained in the American south volunteering to register black voters in Georgia and Mississippi. After the passage of the Civil Rights Act, Walker went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and a National Book Award for her book The Color Purple.

James Baldwin James Baldwin was the author of the works Giovanni’s Room, The Fire Next Time, Go Tell It on the Mountain, and Notes from a Native Son, who wrote at considerable length on the experience of being a member of a marginalized groups in American society between the 1950s and 1970s. By the summer of 1963, he had become a spokesperson for the Civil Rights Movement and met with Robert F. Kennedy in his Manhattan apartment, and John F. Kennedy in the White House to push for the passage of the Civil Rights Act in years before their respective assassinations.

7. A udre Lorde A poet and life long political activist, Audre Lorde was heavily involved in bringing gay culture and gay issues to the forefront of her home in Greenwich village. Her public activism on behalf of the rights of women, gays and lesbians, and civil rights in general, was powerfully reflected in the outrage against social injustice expressed in her poetry.

8. Kylar Broadus In 2012, Kylar Broadus made history when he became the first transgender person to testify before the United States Senate, in support of the Employment NonDiscrimination Act. His decision to testify on behalf of the legislation, came in the wake of him subject to discrimination at his previous employer. ​ 9. E. Denise Simmons Simmons became Mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2008; and in doing so made history to becoming the first openly lesbian African American mayor in American politics. On January 4th, 2016 she was again re-elected as the Mayor of Cambridge, and is expected to remain there working diligently for the community she represents.

Interview with:

Del Antonio

Antonio James, better known as Del Antonio, is a painter, illustrator, and poet based out of Miami, Florida. As an artist, his diverse body of work ranges from celebrations of black musicians, and their contributions to pop culture; to darker and more symbolic expressions reflecting the contemporary struggle to improve both the black and LGBTQ conditions in the United States. We sat down with Antonio to find out more about the man, his personal history, and where he finds the inspiration behind many of his works.

Firstly, where are you from? Have you always resided in Miami?

Antonio: I was actually born in Memphis, Tennessee, but I then later moved to Miami, Florida.

What motivated you start painting? Were you always interested in the arts, or did you transition into them later in life?

Antonio: It wasn’t until my grandmother passed away that I became motivated to paint. She was my best friend, my world.

When I lost her painting was the only thing that comforted me and brought me peace. I’ve always been into the arts. As a kid I was always dancing. I danced at home, at every school event, and I was even apart of a battle dancing group when I was younger. I also used to write songs, and I’ve always drawn things growing up.

I became interested in poetry during my high school years. I currently have six poetry books published which you can find on my site www.lovedout.com. I’m also a published illustrator of a children’s book. I’ve done very little acting. Earlier this year I had the honor to be apart of a web series. Art runs through my soul!

How did you get your start as a painter?

Antonio: One day I decided to draw someone I was dating, and said I would turn it into a painting. It came out really nice, and I was surprised. Yet, I didn’t think I was really interested in becoming a painter. I did a few other pieces just for fun and posted them on social media. They got a lot of positive responses. Yet, even then I left the art of painting alone. When my grandmother passed in 2014 I picked up a paint brush and I begin to create magic. Ever since then, I have taking painting very seriously!

Where do you find inspiration for new works of art?

Antonio: I love music! So sometimes my inspiration comes from music and musical artists, but most of it comes from emotions!

What role do you think art has in our society?

Antonio: It’s a voice. It’s a friend.

Most of all though, it is therapy and healing.

Does art imitate life or does life imitate art?

Antonio: I think it does both.

Art imitates life. It recaps life experiences and moments.

However art also creates ideas for new experiences, and moments which can inspire life.

What ideas or concepts do you try capture or demonstrate through your work?

Antonio: I like to show mostly the duality of strength and vulnerability. Most of my art you will see both.

Does race play a role in

your work, and if so what role?

Antonio: Some of my art more recently has been visual expressions of the Black Lives Matter movement. I also do a lot of paintings of black music icons because of the influence they have had on the community in which I grew up.

Any advice for younger artists who are just getting started?

Antonio

Antonio: The only important advice I can give someone who is just starting is get to know yourself, and your style.

Don’t limit your expressions! If you’ve always drawn pictures of dogs, but wanted to draw a cat, but were unsure about it, because you had always drawn dogs. Forget that! Draw the cat anyway, don’t be afraid to explore yourself artistically.

Do you use a particular

style or have a particular technique?

Antonio: I don’t actually. I never really plan for the art to come out any particular way. I just do it.

amage Control begins with Richard Thomas III (Michael Reese), fighting for the mayoral seat. After winning the election, the show takes a turn when he is confronted by an openly gay worker; and things change. From there, Richard faces troubles with his wife, his health, and finding love.

It becomes gritty and enticing, but at the same time educational.

Both William “Liam” Caldwell and Devin Barrington Ward were important in crafting the entire show. With the two co-parenting the development of the series, they faced many obstacles and trials working together and understanding how they were going to include politics, HIV/ Aids awareness, as well as their own personal work ethics, while creating characters that our community was able to relate to.

I love the fact that they are what you can call “True Activists” in the HIV/AIDS world by creating a show that has a primary focus of HIV prevention and STI education. Devin, who is the president of Impulse Group in Washington DC, has a strong political view and has been doing work in the Public Health sector. Branching the organization’s interest in the entertainment field was a challenge that he decided would be great for the succession of the organization and would bridge a gap in the African American LGBTQ community.

He sought out William, who is the owner of Will-C Productions, 72 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

to help create that vision. Since sex is the primary way most individuals contract the virus, they decided to develop a script and storyline C an you tell me about the show and its origin?

Devin: So, Impulse Group is an international HIV initiative with eighteen chapters opened and adding two more chapters in Africa in the new year. We approach all of our projects with an 80% entertainment and 20% educational module.

We came to Damage Control to spearhead this module to provide the entertainment and still inform people. Will and I met at the U.S. Conference on Aids in Washington DC, which started as an hour conversation and ended up lasting three hours. Will was able to create an amazing script. With my background being in politics, I was able to see the vision that Will brought to life.

William: I have been in this industry for a while. My first project was a book that I wrote called, Boy, Pull Your Pants Up. After that, I started a new project called, The Devil’s Playground. This helped me create a target audience, which focuses on HIV/AIDS related ideas and beingable to infuse them within my work. Devin was able to see that project, which deals with sex addiction. [He] and I sat and spoke about the idea of Damage Control; and he

told me about how he wanted to mirror current shows like House of Cards and Scandal… fusing them around LGBT lifestyle and including HIV/AIDS subjects. So, after extensive research, I was able to develop a storyline based on politics and being gay. hat has been the W greatest challenge that you have had to overcome in the development of the show?

William: The biggest challenge for me was working with Devin.

It’s hard for me to trust… I would do it myself. And, when you find those people that you can work with, you don’t stop and you continue to work with them.

So, partnering up with someone was a different ball game for me and was very challenging to me.

It was very difficult to articulate what needed to be done on the production side, for him to truly understand that, and to truly trust me. Finally, we both sat down and realized that we are just alike: both being alpha males and believing that we have to do it ourselves (which, at times, it was hard to walk away without looking over each other shoulders, going back, checking to make sure things were getting done, and things of that nature.

So, largely, it was more so a trust issue. But, once the project was complete, we can now see that everything that we have gone through was not in vain.

Devin: This, by far, has been one of the most challenging projects that I have ever done, managing so many people at the same time with different personalities; reporting to my senior leadership team in Los Angeles; managing the expectations for my team in DC; [and] then, working with William and Will-C Productions, his team, and [the] cast. Although I have an affinity for the arts, the arts are not the space that I work in; politics, government, and public health are where I am most comfortable. So, it was a learning experience for me. [That is], working with someone who is in the same level of leadership in their line of work and being able to view each other not as a threat, but to come together and say, “We are equals. Let’s make this thing work.” It was challenging, but by far one of the most rewarding work experiences I have had thus far.

Michael: The hardest thing for me was coming from a project called Whoreism, which is closely, in part, who I am to now. Richard Thomas III was completely the opposite of who I am. So, going into that, there was a lot of pressure, knowing that William did not want to cast me for the part, but Devin requested that I take on the part.

After knowing Devin, he was like a boss. So, I felt like I really had to perform this role. I had to do research and learn the character.

I did not want them to say it was “okay.” I wanted to be as good as everyone else wanted it to be.

o, if you didn’t feel S like he was lead, why choose him?

William: When Devin came to me about Michael Reese playing the role, he explained that he wanted someone who could represent the community and not that cookie cutter character or individual that you would normally see in a web series. I have worked with Michael for many years and I knew him [inside] and out. Could he play Richard Thomas III? Absolutely.

But, was this the time for him to play the role? No. However, I pushed him and he was able to deliver.

So who is Michael Reese?

Michael: I am a fun and easy going guy. I am not the life of the party, but I can be the life of the party. Orin, from Whoreism, is very shady [and] quick witted.

I am all of those things, but in a playful way; and It can be nasty. o, you had to go from S straight to gay and back?

William: Yes, and that’s what I didn’t think he was ready for.

There is a transition period that needs to happen and a growth that needs to happen that I think Michael needed… With his last character as Orin, he did not have to show emotion. But, with him playing a straight man and to come across as a straight man on the DL, I did not feel that he was ready.

Michael: You know, for them this was their baby. I was never leading in Whoreism. So to come out and become [the] lead where people see me more, it was different.

Devin: From an acting perspective, I knew who Will wanted to cast for the role. But, I saw something in Michael that I felt he would be able to portray Richard. It would have been no problem bringing someone [else] in, [but] that would have felt like it was uncomfortable.

[Michael] would have pushed himself a lot more than someone who may not have [pushed] to really showcase the character.

There were times when Michael would chase me down and we would sit at my kitchen table, hashing out the way the role should be done; I would coach him. And with that, I felt like someone who was already able to portray the character would have not pushed as hard as he did. I like the fact that he felt like it was something that [he] needed to work towards and [he] would need to do [his] homework, [his] research.

William: Moving forward, you will see nothing but growth.

And, he’s going to be even better. I am just saying that it was just the initial [impression] because that [is] impactful; that is what people see. Devin and I are coming from two different places; Devin comes from the EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1 73

political side and I am coming from the director’s side. As [the] lead role in the show, can you explain your methods of capturing the essence of the character and how you brought him to life?

Michael: It was a lot personally. I am not a big politician, so it was a lot of learning. In Scandal, I couldn’t really get into it. House of Cards was interesting, but I didn’t watch it for the show, [rather] to learn the mannerisms.

So, I really wasn’t watching it to enjoy it, but to learn. So, as Devin says, I really did come to him and say, “Yeah, can you help me a little bit?” There were times in which I did say, “I am a little lost here,” and relaying that over to Will so that he could keep me 74 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

in check. There were times when either we’re on set and not on set, I just needed to make sure everyone was on the same page.

It was a lot of research on erasing Orin, whom I was familiar with.

in attendance, every time Jae came on screen everyone was like, “Yes, Mrs. Jae. Yaaasss.”

Although she is married [and straight], she is still a part of the community and an ally.

H ow was the cast’s support?

Michael: Jay and I had a chemistry on and off the screen; and she was dedicated, which made it very supportive.

Everyone in the cast was very dedicated.

Devin: There was a really great cast support. One of the [actors] that he had many scenes with, they were able to really play off of each other.

There were cast decisions that I wasn’t apart of, but Will was able to hit it on the money. Bruce’s character gave a very, very strong performance. When we held the showing at the East Street Cinema in downtown DC, which we had about 220 people

B eing that you have continuously succeeded at the development of so many great shows, what is the key to developing a successful series?

William: Story. You can have a cluster of actors, but if you

don’t have a story, then it won’t succeed. You can have a really good web series, where it has a lot of sex and eye candy out of the world, and have no story. When you can read the comments and people are saying, “You spent ten minutes on a sex scene when you could have given me a story,” then that’s a problem. I feel that, at the end of the day, it’s better to have a story. I’m blessed that God has given me the talent and vision to come up with that.

Everything has been done or recycled. So, to me, it’s about how can I bring it? How can I put a spin on it? So, that is what I think is the key.

Classic Men of history.

Much of Jidenna’s fashion sense comes via his father.

“He used to wear three-piece suits, especially in the ‘70s,” he says. “He also walked with a cane.” Other early inspirations, either sartorially or musically, range from Malcolm Xand Frank Sinatra to Outkast’s Andre 3000 and Bob Marley.

More important, perhaps, were the mechanics, the sanitation workers, the military veterans who were respected leaders in the communities where Jidenna grew up. “These men cared about grooming and appearance, but, moreso, they cared about character,” he EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1 77

​Who is MA RAINEY?

A

lmost a century ago, a pair of talented and fearless black women from the American south, brought some of the first recorded sounds of the blues to a national audience. In their ensuing rise to fame, they would travel the country to perform before enchanted audiences both black and white, and eventually become some of the most musically and culturally significant icons of the early 20th century. However, along the way of shaping the course of musical history, both women would become some of the earliest artists to sing about and become famous for bisexuality. ​ a Rainey was born in 1886 M in Columbus, Georgia. She began her career in music by performing in black minstrel shows for her local church at the age of 14. By 1906 she and her husband had joined the Rabbit’s Foot Company.

Rainey’s popularity continued to grow, when in 1914 in New Orleans she was introduced to 78 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

a number of popular recording artists including Joe Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and Sidney Bechet. Among the artists Ma Rainey would meet in New Orleans was another up and and coming young blues singer by the name of Bessie Smith.

I​t wasn’t long after the Mother of Blues met the Empress of the Blues, that rumors began to circulate that the two were intimately involved. While it was never conclusively proven that the two legends of blues were having extra marital affairs with each other, neither woman strayed far from controversy during the period, especially when it came to their sex lives.

In addition to writing It’s Dirty But Good, which featured explicitly lesbian lyrics, Bessie Smith was known to frequently get into trouble with her jealous husband due to her affairs with women. ​ Ma Rainey on the other hand wrote and recorded the song Prove It on Me, which contained lyrics referencing an incident in

1925, in which she was actually arrested for hosting an orgy with the female members of her chorus. Prove It on Me was described by activist Angela Davis, as being one of the key cultural precursors to the lesbian movement that would later develop in the 1970s. ​ While today they are largely remembered for their musical legacies, both Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, each in their own way contributed significantly to subtlety eroding the culture of rigid puritanism in regards to sexual expression and sexual preference. And on that very subject, Ma Rainey probably summed it up best; “They said I do it, ain’t nobody caught me.

Asian Glazed Chicken Fingers

I

’ve got the perfect recipe for you today for super crispy chicken fingers glazed with a perfectly spiced sauce with honey, soy, sriracha and a bunch of other yummy ingredients. This chicken really is super crispy. I soaked the chicken fingers in buttermilk first to tenderize the meat, then dredged the chicken through flour, buttermilk again and finally in some nice Panko breadcrumbs.

The best thing about this recipe, however, is that the chicken is baked. I knew I was going to get questions if this can be baked or fried, so I made both. Since this recipe makes a lot of chicken fingers, I fried half and baked half. Both versions turned out equally delicious … BUT if you really want to know the truth, interestingly enough, the baked version retained its crispiness longer. So based on that I’m going to say that the baked version is my favorite.

Serves: 6

For Chicken

Ingredients

•2 to 3 lbs chicken breasts (I had 4 chicken breasts), boneless and skinless • 1 to 2 cups flour for dredging • 2 cups breadcrumbs (I used Panko) • 1 to 2 cups buttermilk • Salt and pepper to taste • Green onions for garnish

Cup honey Cup soy sauce 1 tsp sriracha sauce tsp chili flakes tsp Chinese five spice tsp garlic powder 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp rice vinegar Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 400 F degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a small sauce pan, whisk all the sauce ingredients together.

Set aside.

3. Cut the chicken breasts into long thin strips. Place the chicken in a bowl and pour about a cup of buttermilk over the chicken.

Get 3 shallow plates ready. Fill one with flour, one with remaining buttermilk and last with breadcrumbs. Line them up like an assembly line, chicken, flour, buttermilk, breadcrumbs. Season the flour and the breadcrumbs generously with salt and pepper.

4. Dredge each chicken finger through flour, then buttermilk, and lastly through breadcrumbs. Place on prepared baking sheet.

Repeat with all chicken fingers.

5. Bake them for about 30 to 45 minutes until they start to brown and chicken is cooked through. Cut one in half if needed to check for doneness.

6. I f you wish to fry these, heat vegetable oil in a large skillet. Fry chicken on both sides for about 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown.

7. While chicken is baking, bring the sauce to a boil over medium high heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to a medium and cook until sauce reduces by half and thickens.

8. Generously drizzle sauce over chicken fingers. Garnish with chopped green onions, if preferred.

Sticky Honey Garlic Chicken Wings

hese sweet and sticky honey garlic chicken wings are the best ever.

Even though they’re baked, not fried, they’re super crispy. You will love them!

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

2. Place the chicken wings in a large bowl and toss them with the 1 teaspoon of sesame oil, sea salt and pepper.

Place them on the prepared baking tray and put them in the oven for 35-40 minutes, or until they are crispy.

3. While the chicken wings are baking, make the glaze. Add all the glaze ingredients to a small frying pan over medium-high heat. Boil rapidly for 3-4 minutes, or until the glaze has reduced to 1/2 cup. Remove from the heat.

4. Once the chicken wings are crispy remove them from the oven and toss them with the glaze. Sprinkle some cilantro and toasted sesame seeds over top and serve immediately.

Veggie Packed Stir-Fry

on’t we all need one or two really good stir-fry recipes in our dinner rotation? I love stir-fry because not only does it taste delicious, but it’s a great way to get a generous serving of veggies in one meal. This one is no exception! It’s packed with veggies, plus the bonus of a protein (chicken) keeps it filling and flavorful.

My mom always made stir-fry growing up. She made a good stir-fry, but I remember the only thing her sauce consisted of was soy sauce (and not the low-sodium version), so it was excessively salty and didn’t leave a lot of room for tasting that delicious fresh flavor from all the veggies. Don’t get me wrong, my mom is a great cook, that’s just the way she likes her food — on the salty side of things. I like to be more conservative with the salt, which is why I frequently use low sodium broth and light soy sauce. You can always add more salt to taste later, but you can’t take it away once it’s added.

And we’ve all been there before at least once. Lesson learned, right?

This is actually my favorite stir-fry I’ve had to date and my whole family loved it! My kids may have been a little more picky with some of the veggies, yes those uniquely textured mushrooms, and they may have just tried to pick those itty bitty, teensy tiny peas out of the pod and ditched the shells. But all and all it was a dinner win and I can’t wait to make it again!

Ingredients • 3/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth • 1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce • 1 teaspoon sesame oil • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • 1 1/2 teaspoons granulated sugar • 1 pound chicken breasts, cut into small strips • 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 2 1/2 cups broccoli florets, chopped into bite-size pieces • 1 1/2 cups chopped carrots (about 4) • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced into strips and strips halved (1 1/2 cups) • 1 cup chopped yellow onion (1 small) • 1 tablespoon peeled and finely minced fresh ginger • 1 1/2 cups sugar snap peas, sliced into halves • 1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms • 3 cloves garlic, minced

from marinade and add chicken to wok. Heat chicken until halfway cooked through, about 3 minutes, tossing occasionally. Add in broccoli, carrots, bell pepper, onion, and ginger. Cook, tossing occasionally, 4 minutes. Add in snap peas, mushrooms, and garlic, and cook 2 minutes longer. Whisk soy sauce mixture once more, then pour into pan and cook, tossing frequently, until sauce has thickened and veggies are tender, about 2 minutes.

4. Serve warm over white or brown rice.

Cooked white or brown rice, for serving

Instructions 1. In a 2 cup liquid measuring cup or a bowl, whisk together chicken broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil.

Immediately after whisking well, measure out 1/4 cup (before all the sesame oil just returns to the top). Whisk cornstarch and sugar into remaining soy sauce mixture.

2. Add chicken to a gallon-size resealable bag. Pour the 1/4 cup of marinade over chicken in bag and let marinate in fridge 10-15 minutes (now is a good time to chop all the veggies).

need to introduce you to my husband right from the getgo since he is a key player in my culinary adventures.

Todd. That’s his name, Todd.

There will be more biography in the future, but I’ll start with the most pertinent.

Todd’s loves pretty much anything in the food realm. Well, there are exceptions, most of which many of you, though not all, would agree with (brain, tongue, kidneys – basically all internal organs). He loves the complex, he loves the simple. I can spend hours on a gourmet dish and he’ll love it. I can spend 10 minutes on a casserole… and 92 EBANMAN MAG 2 0 1 6 V O L 1

he’ll love it. It’s exasperating in a way, but really, how can I complain? How ridiculous would I be to criticize my husband because he’s too easy to please? Exactly.

So, while his easy-to-please-ness doesn’t exactly inspire me on to new and exciting culinary heights and challenges, I’m still grateful that I have such a goshdarn, easy-to-please husband.

So, let’s start with something that is right up his alley, shall we? Scandalously delicious but deceptively simple.

Ingredients • 1 (16 oz) package linguine, prepared according to package instructions • 1 pound large (16-20 count) shrimp, *shelled and deveined (leave the tail on, it looks fancier that way) • 3 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (add more if you like it hot!)

• 1/2 cup white wine

• 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon zest • Freshly ground black pepper and salt to taste • 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley • Parmesan cheese for sprinkling • Extra chopped parsley for garnishing

Instructions 1. Heat a medium-sized pan on medium-high heat. Once heated, add the butter and olive oil.

Once the butter is melted and is no longer foamy, increase the heat to high and add the shrimp. Cook for one minute then turn shrimp over, add the garlic and red pepper flakes, and cook for another minute.

Be careful not to overcook or the shrimp will be tough. Set shrimp aside on a warm plate.

2. Next add the white wine, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Add black pepper and salt to taste.

Leave the heat on high and let the wine sauce boil for 2-3 minutes.

3. R educe heat to medium. Add the shrimp and parsley and stir to coat with the sauce.

Sprinkle each serving with some Parmesan cheese and extra chopped parsley.

4. Serve immediately over pasta.

ast week Mother Nature teased us Ohioans and gave us a short lived burst of spring weather.

The temperatures hit the high fifties so, of course, I had to make something citrus. After browsing the web for a few minutes, I encountered a recipe that included not only citrus… but citrus and coconut. How can you go wrong with this combo?

I had all the ingredients in the pantry, so I headed into the kitchen and got to baking!

This recipe is so easy, I utilized my food processor which made the crust come together in a matter of minutes. The end result was a lovely citrus flavored bar dessert with an amazing toasted coconut topping…seriously, these bars scream warm weather!

Unfortunately, that warm weather made the snow melt, thus making my backyard a swamp…and to ice the cake, the temps dipped back down to forties. I think I need a pair of these wellies, yep, wellies will make me feel better while dodging muddy puddles and geese in my backyard. If you’re as ready for warm weather and sunshine as I am, make these bars…they may help ya withstand the wait! Thanks for stopping by, have a scruptious day.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan with foil or parchment paper and spray with non-stick cooking spray.

2. In a bowl, combine flour and confectioners’ sugar; cut in the butter until crumbly (I used my food processor and pulsed the ingredients until thoroughly combined).

3. P ress into the bottom of a lightly greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking pan. Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes.

4. M eanwhile, in a mixing bowl, beat the eggs, sugar, lemon juice and baking powder until well mixed. Pour over crust; sprinkle coconut evenly over the top.

5. B ake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

6. Cool on a wire rack. Cut into bars.

Raspberry Cheesecake Mousse Serves: 10

crumbs (8 full sheets) • 2 Tbsp (26g) granulated sugar • 1/4 cup (56g) unsalted butter, melted • Topping (optional) • 3/4 cup (175ml) heavy cream • 2 Tbsp (26g) granulated sugar • 10 - 20 fresh raspberries • Mint leaves

• Mousse • 15 oz (3 1/2 cups) fresh raspberries • 2 tsp gelatin powder • 3 Tbsp (45ml) cold water • 1 1/2 cups (355ml) heavy cream • 12 oz (340g) cream cheese, softened • 2 1/4 cups (260g) powdered sugar, divided • 1 tsp vanilla extract • Red food coloring, optional • Crust • 1 cup (120g) graham cracker

1. Pulse raspberries in a food processor until well pureed.

Force puree through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl to remove seeds (you should have 1 1/3 cups puree). Set aside.

2. Pour 3 Tbsp water into a small microwave safe bowl, sprinkle gelatin evenly over water then let rest 5 minutes. Heat gelatin mixture in microwave on high power for 30 seconds.

Remove and whisk for 1 minute, let cool 4 minutes until

just warm (don’t let it cool completely or it may start to set).

3. Between stages of gelatin resting prepare whipped cream and cream cheese mixture as listed here - In a medium mixing bowl using an electric hand mixer whip heavy cream on high speed until soft peaks form. Add in 1/4 cup powdered sugar and whip until stiff peaks form (just shake excess from beater blades, no need to wash for next step). In a separate large mixing bowl using hand mixer, blend cream cheese and 2 cups powdered sugar until combined. Add in vanilla and red food coloring if using (I think I used about 14 drops liquid coloring) and mix until combined then increase to high speed and whip until light and fluffy about 2 minutes.

puree and add in lukewarm gelatin/water mixture and mix until well combined. Fold in 1/3 of the whipped cream mixture, then add remaining and fold just until combined.

Transfer to refrigerator while preparing crust layer (don’t chill longer than 30 minutes you don’t want it to set).

4. For the crust and assembly: 5. I n a medium mixing bowl stir together graham cracker crumbs and sugar. Pour in butter and using a fork, stir until evenly moistened. Divide mixture among 10 dessert cups and lightly press into an even layer. Working in batches add mousse to a piping bag fitted with a large round tip and pipe over crust layer in cups (it will be slightly runny so you can just hold a spatula over opening while moving bag from cup to cup). Repeat with remaining mousse. Cover cups with plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator 3 hours until set.

If adding the toppings (add these just before serving): In a medium mixing bowl using an electric hand mixer whip heavy cream until soft peaks form, add in sugar and whip until stiff peaks form. Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip then pipe cream over mousse. Add 1 - 2 raspberries to each then garnish with mint leaves.

hile staying at the spectacular eco-conscious Fivelements Puri Ahimsa wellness retreat, I ventured out to one of Bali’s most popular attractions, the Ubud Sacred Monkey Forest.

Officially known as the Padangtegal Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, the site contains 27 acres of protected grounds, 605 long-tailed macaque monkeys, and three 14th-century temples (Pura Puseh, Pura Desa, and Pura Dalem). The forest is located minutes from the main strip of Ubud, the ‘Cultural Heart of Bali.’ You can purchase bananas on-site to feed the monkeys, make sure to carefully conceal the fruit in a backpack because the monkeys will at random, jump on to you for a free meal. This is all apart of the fun.

When you are ready to feed them, take one banana out at a time, this will prevent any accidental bites. I have read many reviews about aggressive behavior from the monkeys, I did witness it for myself, but was never bitten.

Most aggression cases have happened because of improper feeding; if you take one banana out at a time, watch your surroundings, and do not taunt the monkeys (especially the mature ones!) this will help to ensure a safe and highly enjoyable interaction. Also note, if you have no bananas, food, or hand-held items the monkeys will typically be unfazed by your presence, allowing visitors who want a little distance to have a great time too. I give this attraction a 10/10, it’s literally a ‘barrel of monkeys’ fun!
