WELCOME From the Chairman of the Board

I am so excited to be your new Chamber of Commerce Chairman for 2020-21. When I was first introduced to the Chamber in 2014, I learned first hand how the Chamber worked. I was fresh out of college and was amazed at the different programs the Chamber had to help better the businesses and communities in Putnam and even in the surrounding counties.

The Mission of the Chamber is to promote economic prosperity and tourism for our Community. We have many different programs that the staff and board of directors are very passionate about. We have created and adjusted programs and events in order to flourish. It is my honor to be the Chairman and am very excited to grow the Chamber while here. We are all here for you.

The Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce is having to say goodbye to their Membership Manager, Brooke Barrett. Brooke started with the Chamber in 2017 as an intern and came on as a full-time employee in 2018.

Brooke graduated from Georgia College & State University with a degree in Communications and Marketing. Since she joined the Chamber, she has gained sales experience and knowledge of business development, which we hope aids her in her new role.

Brooke has accepted a position working for Reynolds on Lake Oconee in their Marketing Department. While we hate to see her go, we are so proud of her and wish her all the best in the next Chapter of her life.

"It is bittersweet to be leaving the Chamber after being involved for so long. I have truly enjoyed my time here and have gotten to know some of the best people that Putnam County has to offer. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in so many great projects for the County and can't wait to watch as Eatonton and Putnam County continues to grow" said Brooke. "I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way, especially Roddie Anne Blackwell, who has been a mentor and a friend. I am going to miss being a part of the Chamber but am looking forward to still being involved in other capacities!"

Chamber Retreat 2020 On June 18th, the Chamber Board of Directors gathered for an all day work retreat at the newly renovated Chamber office. This is something the staff looks forward to every year as it gives them and the board members a chance to discuss, in depth, everything the Chamber is working on and to get new ideas, goals and direction from the board. As with everything else this year, the retreat was a little different than usual.

We started the morning off by introducing our newest Board members, Dr. Jameelah Gater, Amy McElhenney and Dr. Haley Lance. These three newest members took the place of our outgoing members Tim McClelland, Matt Wilson and Marie Rainey. After breakfast and introductions, we moved into the businesses portion of the day with general updates by our staff on the last month.

After the usual board meeting, the board discussed their thoughts on what the Chamber's strengths and weaknesses were. It is always a great experience to hear from others what they feel the staff does right, and what they can work on.

Some of the strengths included: 1. Our reputation as a Chamber within the region 2. Our financial reserves as we are one of only a few Chambers through the state that was able to navigate the pandemic without having to furlough or close all together.

3. Communication with members Some of the weaknesses included: 1. Lack of attendance at networking events 2. Getting the minority businesses involved with our programming 3. Lack of interactive posts on our social media accounts The board and staff then went on to cover the upcoming months and year. With COVID-19 altering so many aspects of the Chamber, mainly networking events, we needed some new and innovative ways to engage members and provide them with alternative ways to get these benefits. Therefore, we will be exploring virtual networking events for the future to compliment our in-person programming we already offer. We want to ensure that our members are as comfortable as possible in this crazy world we find ourselves living in so new sponsorship opportunities and educational programming will become available virtually soon.

We finally ended the day by reviewing our administrative policies and assigning board members new duties for the upcoming year. We also went over the Certified Chamber Application that the Chamber staff completed. This massive document has to be completed and submitted every five years for the Chamber to keep their accreditation as a Certified Chamber in Georgia. The Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce is one of only 59 certified Chambers in Georgia! We hope to receive the accreditation again so we can continue to serve the community to our fullest capacity.

2020 has been a tough year, but we are expecting great things from our new board!

TOURISM UPDATE Events & Recreation!

This Summer has looked a little different from past Summers. However, we have made the most of it at the Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center! The Chamber and Welcome Center had to close from mid-March to mid-May. During this time, the staff were able to clean-house and work on projects that had been put aside. One of the major projects being our Bike Shed. The shed was moved from the Plaza Arts Center to the gravel lot on W Harris Street thanks to Southeastern Portable Buildings of Eatonton.

The building was pressure washed and repainted. There are future plans to paint a mural on the side facing the street saying “Welcome to Eatonton: Bike Rentals Available”. The shed holds 7 rental bikes offered by the Chamber and Welcome Center.

Tourism Marketing & Special Events Coordinator

The Welcome Center is in charge of geocaching sites in downtown Eatonton and Putnam County. The project began a few years ago. The geocaches are hidden at important and historical sites that are significant to the area. These locations are Downtown Eatonton, Lake Oconee area, Alice Walker Wards Chapel AME Church, Rock Eagle Effigy, and Heartwood Acres. Boxes are hidden at these locations and contain cards with information on the particular area as well as finds left from visitors once they have located the geocache. The newest location added to the project is Alice Walker Wards Chapel AME Church. The inside of the church is not accessible, but one can still admire the outside painted windows dedicated to Alice Walker. The church is not far from her birthplace. The State’s first round of the 2020 Tourism Product Development Grant was due June 25. The grant is $10,000 and must go towards tourism and economic development in the community that receives it. I applied for Downtown Development Authority for the front restoration of the Pex Theatre. Plans include a new marquee for the building. In the past the Chamber has applied for numerous grants which helped fund projects including the 3 pocket parks that were recently completed, Rock Hawk Effigy, and Butterflies and Blooms in the Briar Patch. Recipients will be announced in October, as well as the second round of grant funding applications being due; this grant will be $5,000. If you are interested in applying for the second round, please contact me for more information.

Fall is just around the corner! On Monday, October 5th, we will be celebrating our 21st Annual Taste of Eatonton. Last year was a huge success; attendees enjoyed tasting everything from cake to steak! It’s a favorite Regional Event that draws visitors from all over. The Taste of Eatonton helps to promote our community as a great tourism destination, including Eatonton, Putnam County, Lakes Oconee and Sinclair. Guests who purchase a ticket may sample food from all participants. Tickets are on sale September 1! Call us at (706) 485-7701 to get your tickets. Tickets are also available at The Peoples Bank and Farmers & Merchants Bank. Social distancing and safety regulations will be implemented to insure the health and safety of all participants and vendors. Due to COVID-19 and out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our staff, visitors, attendees, sponsors and our community, both the Rock Hawk History Mystery Cruises and the 2020 Sweet Tee Off Golf Tournament have been cancelled. Emails have been sent to all registrants, teams and sponsors regarding these changes. We would like to thank our community and participants for the continued support, and we look forward to seeing you all at next year’s events.

Many of our local restaurants are offering take-out, curbside pickup and delivery. Small businesses are offering gift cards, shipping and advanced orders. If you are in need of fresh air and need to stretch your legs, Eatonton and Putnam County have numerous recreational options! Butterflies and Blooms in the Briar Patch in downtown Eatonton is home to numerous butterfly species and flowers along with a .25 trail that is pet friendly. Rock Hawk Effigy and Trails offers running, biking, and educational trails that are pet friendly, along with museums and an archery range. Both Lake Oconee and Sinclair are still accessible through Georgia Power’s parks. Continue to support locally while distancing socially!

deck dining Local restaurants capitalizing on the safety of outdoor spaces.

The most recent restaurant offering outdoor seating on beautiful Lake Oconee is the Lake Oconee Bistro. Opened March of 2020, the bistro provides a diverse menu ranging from towering raw seafood trays, toa variety of pizzas, soups, and sandwiches. In July, The Bistro added a large deck. They now serve more tables in addition to capitalizing on their stunning view of Lake Oconee. Patrons can dine outside and enjoy not only the lakeside views, but live local music and community-based events. In addition to a variety of cuisine, the Bistro also has an extensive drink menu that includes craft beers, domestics, and popular hard seltzers. During their weekly Greekthemed Sunday brunch, the Bistro offers an expansive Bloody Mary bar, as well as their usual specialty beverage menu. They are open every day for lunch and dinner, except Tuesday.

Just across the street from Lake Oconee Bistro, The Pizza Place also features an outdoor deck. The Pizza Place serves not only authentic pizzas, but also flavorful calzones, subs, salads, and wings. Separating themselves from other restaurants in the area, they do have convenient dock access for the hungry boaters on Lake Oconee. Take advantage of their umbrella-covered deck and savor both the food and relaxing views of Lake Oconee.

The Pizza Place is open Monday- Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturday hours are 11:00 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Member Milestone In 2012, Dr. Nicolas Chronos started Cardiology Care Clinics of Lake Oconee with the goal of bringing the highest quality of care to Georgia’s lake country. In the years since, Cardiology Care Clinic has grown, moved, and pioneered in new ways to achieve this goal. The original emphasis was on cardiology, headed by Dr. Chronos and Dr. Peter Chapman. Dr. Chronos specializes in general cardiology, coronary artery disease management, and heart failure management. Dr. Chapman is an electrophysiologist, with expertise in curative ablation, defibrillators, and pacemakers. Their combined skills quickly garnered the support of the community for their cardiac care, however Dr. Chronos had a vision of a more holistic and comprehensive practice that could provide services outside of cardiology.

Dr. Chronos has always been passionate about caring for every aspect of his patient’s health, and as such, he began to see the need for expanding the range of care provided by his clinic. After several years, Cardiology Care Clinics expanded to become Lake Country Medical Group: a truly multispecialty independent practice, emphasizing internal medicine, gynecology, lifestyle medicine, and of course, cardiology. Dr. Eric Silver, Dr. Cary Hefty, and the Nurse Practitioners Maureen Bowser, Taylor Hall, and Brooks Vaughan are passionate about the care they give their patients.

The clinic now offers a wealth of programs designed to manage and care for patients. The imaging capabilities were expanded to include advanced equipment capable of conducting ultrasounds and echocardiograms in the office. The highest quality remote care programs including Chronic Care Management (CCM) and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) allow the physicians to monitor their patients’ in real time, bringing the opportunity for continuous care and ease of mind. The remote care staff works 24/7 to ensure that patients are getting the treatment they need. Additionally, the clinic offers a pacemaker clinic, weight loss clinic, surgical clearance clinic, sleep clinic, and a cardio-oncology clinic. The office now even includes a research team based in office to provide accessibility to the best of health care. In the midst of the expansions, the goal remains the same: to provide the highest quality of care to the lake country.

In June of this year, we moved into a new 7,800 square foot facility at 119 Harmony Crossing, Suite 3 with state of the art diagnostic capabilities and our total staff has grown to 25. Over the last 8 years, our group has grown to the point that half of our current cardiology patients utilize our internal medicine practice. With this remarkable infrastructure and supporting team, we decided that with Dr. Tippett’s retirement now was the time to establish a world class Concierge Medicine Program here at Lake Oconee. We are accepting new patients in all of our clinics and offerings.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE This year overall has been full of unexpected events that have caused all of us to alter the way that we see the world, and that includes Chamber membership.

Through the pandemic, I would talk to businesses who were barely hanging on and some businesses who have never seen a more profitable Spring/Summer. Regardless of what end of the spectrum you may find yourself, one of the biggest discussion points was that of networking and large community events.

One of the main reasons that businesses join the Chamber is for the networking opportunities and connections that can be made. Therefore, we are excited to announce that our inperson programming will begin back this month with our Lunch N' Learn on August 27th! This event will be held at the Chamber office and will also be broadcast live via Zoom for those not yet comfortable with getting out in groups. An updated calendar of events can also be found in this issue that includes all of the confirmed events that are scheduled to take place later in the year.

As far as our large community events and fundraisers, the Sweet Tee Off has been cancelled due to COVID. Teams and sponsors who committed to the tournament will be hearing from our Tourism and Special Events Coordinator with additional details. The Taste of Eatonton is still scheduled for Monday October 5th. If you are a restaurant owner who would like to participate, please contact our office. We understand the financial burden you may have found yourself in this year and we would like to offer some options to assist you.

We also wanted to remind everyone that there are payment options for your annual dues. We have seen renewals come in slowly but the goal is to not lose any members because of the pandemic. We are more than willing to assist you so you don't lose out on any of your benefits! Just give us a call!

PRESIDENT'S NOTES

RODDIE ANNE BLACKWELL President CEO

Well, I can honestly say this has been a year like no other! I keep waiting for things to become normal again, knowing that we have no idea what normal is going to look like now.

It’s being invented as we speak. For our community, We will remember this year as being: 1. For Schools: no proms, no last day of school, no graduations ceremonies, and no good bye hugs between students and teachers. However, our schools certainly stepped up to the plate to continue our children’s education and to make sure they were fed.

2. For local small businesses: Some will have a banner year if they were essential; while others closed temporarily, and some couldn’t weather the storm and closed permanently. Others found new and creative ways to stay viable….true entrepreneurs! The Chamber hopes that all businesses took advantage of the resources that we tried to collect and share.

3. Health Care: Has forever been changed. While some may disagree, America has the best care in the world….not perfect, but really good. We are thankful to all the front line workers (and their families).

4. Our hats are off to all the front line workers. From the school bus drivers, to grocery store clerks, sanitation workers, health care providers, public service workers, food service workers, truckers and the line goes on and on who deserve praise.

For the Chamber: 1. We were so excited about moving into our new building (Chamber & Welcome Center); having our GRAND OPENING and Ribbon cutting and welcoming all the summer tourist to see what we had done. Of course that had to be scaled down but everyone is slowly finding us and loves our surprises.

2. We had to cancel this year’s Annual Dinner & Awards, which means that 2021 will have to be spectacular.

3. We finished our Leadership 2020 program and graduated the class of 20 in 2020.

I recently attended the GACCE Leadership Conference with about 80 other Chamber Presidents, all of us trying to figure out what to do next. How do we help our members and community get back to the economic prosperity we were experiencing for 2020? Things have changed and so will our Chamber as we are known for our adaptability. One of the most interesting sessions was given by Glen Sheppard, who is a noted speaker in the corporate world. He talked about the different generations still living and how and why they are as they are, and the world events that developed their thinking habits and how we need to modify our thinking to see through their eyes. The surviving generations are: 1. The Silent Generation: those born between 1925-45, they are the most loyal of the generations, 1 job, 1 marriage, etc.

2. The Baby Boomers: born between 1946-64, they are workaholics and now spoiling their grandchildren because they worked through their own children’s childhood. They were given the world since their parents grew up in the depression. They love to dress up and party hard thus “Everything will be all right” is their motto.

3. Gen X: born 1964-mid 80’s. They are the most independent generation as they were “latch key” children. They are the most cynical and not great team players. They are rebellious and love to argue.

4. Gen Y or the millennials: Born from mid-1980 to 1999. They do everything together as their moms were known as the Helicopter Moms (very protective). Great team players as they need lots of feedback in making decisions. Very technically savvy and they need immediate gratification.

5. Gen Z: born from 1999 to present. This generation feels the most threaten as they have experienced 9-11 and school shootings. They have matured faster than any other generations, partly because of technology. Grandparents seem to be a greater influence on them than other generations.

Needless to say I found this information very informative as it gives you insight into how to market to different generations, and we are all in the “marketing business!"

More Than a Mustache

Beloved Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Billy Webster, has lead quite an adventurous life. At a recent meeting at the Putnam County Administrative Building, County Manager, Paul Van Haute, talked about Commissioner Webster's time working for the Space Program.

Obviously we were very interested in learning this and after some convincing, we were able to sit down and learn all about the Commissioner's life before coming to Putnam County, and as it turns out, he's much more than a mustache.

Commissioner Webster started out as a new lieutenant at the Wright Patterson Air force base back in 1963. While there, he came across a job posting for a "good job you won't regret" on the other side of the base in their flight test wing. Turns out, they were looking for people to go up in a flight simulator called the "vomit comet" to see how they would act in zero G or a weightless state. Commissioner Webster explained that they would go from 2.5 G, where you weigh twice as much as you normally would, to a zero G or weightless state in the aircraft. He was one of the only young lieutenants that did not get sick during these test flights so they called him back and hired him on as a Flight Test Director and Safety Officer.

Through this experience he got to train astronauts on how to work in a weightless environment. This lead him to be involved on the astronaut crew. When they were doing test flights for Gemini 7, a spacecraft with a two man crew, Commissioner Webster was a fill in for Frank Borman, one of the astronauts for the mission. At this time, the pressure suits they would wear were made specifically for the astronaut. If Frank couldn't make a training session, Commissioner Webster would fill in because he was the only one who could fit inside the space suit.

As the Flight Test Director and Safety Office, he also got to conduct animal experiments in a weightless environment. He said they would send birds, cats, dogs etc. up in the simulator to see how they would react. It was his job to ensure that these animals were not harmed or mistreated during the experiments. He explained that these tests helped the Space Program know how the inner ear changed in zero G and taught the astronauts how to balance.

Commissioner Webster spent 2 years working with the Space Program and was then sent to the University of New Hampshire to obtain a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then went and became a member on the design and flight test crew for the C5 airplane. Commissioner Webster was then assigned to Robins Air Force base here in Georgia where he retired after 20 years of service.

After retiring, Commissioner Webster then worked for Robins Air Force base for 17 years where he retired as a civilian in 1999. During his time at Robins, he bought a house on the lake here in Putnam County so once he retired he moved here full time.

Commissioner Webster spent the first few years post retirement volunteering for the Animal Shelter until the attack on 9/11. At this time, he felt like he needed to contribute more to the community and the country, so he began volunteering 20 hours a week with no pay at the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Commissioner Webster gathered information on the county through this experience and he found some things he didn't agree with and began writing letters to the editor expressing his thoughts. One day, someone approached him and told him that instead of talking and writing about what needed to be changed, he should get out there and change it. This lead to him running for the Commissioner seat in District 4 of Putnam County in 2004. He won the election by 6 votes!

Commissioner Webster served the 4th District for 3 terms, an equivalent of 12 years, before stepping down. Two years later, he ran for the Chairman of the Board position and has been in the position for just over a year and a half.

"I am appreciative for being allowed to live in this great country and this great county," said Webster, "I wake up everyday thinking that I represent some of the best people who ever lived and if I can give back even a little of what they have given me then everything has been worth it."

The citizens of Putnam County all know Commissioner Webster because of his service to the community over the past several decades and of course his amazing mustache but now we know he is much more than a mustache. Thank you Commissioner Webster for your service!

LEADERSHIP PUTNAM CLASS OF

The Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce finally got to graduate the 25th Leadership Putnam Class on July 30th. The class began the program back in January with their graduation initially set for March, however, with COVID-19 causing everything to shut down for a while everything got pushed and the program had to be placed on hold until conditions allowed for group gatherings.

After months of not seeing one another, the group was able to reunite on July 28th for their final class meeting at the Putnam County Administrative building where they learned about local government and met some of the elected officials including Mayor John Reid. It was a bittersweet experience for the class as they were excited to reconnect face to face but they also knew all they had left was their graduation.

Rock Eagle 4-H Center gave the Chamber the green light to host their graduation on July 30th in their dining hall with added safety precautions and regulations in place. This was the first event to be held at the center since COVID-19 shut them down back in March. The event was wonderful! All attendees were required to wear a mask unless actively eating or drinking, temperature checks were done prior to attendees entering the building and they had to wash their hands before being allowed access to the dining hall. Social distancing was practiced when possible and the meal was a cafeteria style buffet, which helped limit the contact with the food to only Rock Eagle dining staff.

Rock Eagle did a wonderful job of ensuring the safety of their staff and our guests, The program began with a welcome from the Chamber President, Roddie Anne Blackwell, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Maddie Atkinson.

Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Billy Webster, gave a presentation to the graduates and a slideshow of pictures was displayed. Each graduate was recognized and presented with a certificate of completion along with other small gifts from the Chamber.

Each year, the graduating class also votes on who they believe is the "Most Outstanding Leader" of their group. This vote is anonymous and sprung on the graduates during their last class. This year, the Outstanding Leader was Maggie Milner of the Plaza Arts Center. Maggie was presented with a certificate from the Chairman of the Board, Maddie Atkinson.

Maggie also gave a presentation on the group's project, which she helped head up. This year's class decided that considering all that has been going on with COVID-19 that they would raise money for Putnam Christian Outreach, a local charity that assists families with food, clothing, bills etc. The group got together and raised money and volunteered for PCO to help them with the influx of requests coming in fur to the pandemic. Together, they were able to raise $5,000 for the cause and donated ore than 70 hours of their time to volunteering!

The Eatonton-Putnam Chamber is hosting their 11th Annual Legislative Breakfast at The Plaza Arts Center on October 22nd. This year's event will also be broadcast live via Zoom for those who are unable to attend or are uncomfortable being in a group setting. Tickets for the breakfast, virtually or in person, are $10. Safety precautions will be in place for the in-person meeting. Temperature checks will be done at the door, hand sanitizing stations with be available and masks are recommended.

CHEERS TO 40 YEARS!

Chamber President, Roddie Anne Blackwell, is celebrating her 40th anniversary with the Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce this year.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, celebrations have been forced to be placed on hold but we still wanted to pay tribute to all the hard work that she has put in over the last four decades.

Roddie Anne began with the Chamber in 1980, less than a year after the Chamber was founded. She decided to apply for the position after her youngest child started school just so she would have something to do and actually, she wasn't the first choice for the job. Another candidate was offered the position but turned it down leaving Roddie Anne with the offer. Crazy to think how much could be different had this not happened!

Over the past 40 years, Roddie Anne has raised the Chamber like one of her own children. She has been the cornerstone of the organization and has grown it into what it is today. She has seen the Chamber through several moves, growth in membership, countless fundraisers and community events and even 6 international trips!

During her time with the Chamber she has acquired several certifications in her role, including graduating from Chamber Institute (a 6 year program), and the Economic Development Institute. She has sat on numerous boards including the Tri-County EMC Foundation Board (10 years), the Plaza Board of Directors (12 years), the Downtown Development Authority Board and the Eatonton Mainstreet Board.

As the President of the Chamber, Roddie Anne shared that the projects she is most proud of are the Leadership Putnam Program and the Putnam Campus of the Central Georgia Technical College.

Leadership Putnam started in 1990 as a way to develop more leaders in the community. This July, the program graduated its 25th class pushing the total number of graduates to well over 500. Participants in the program learn about the community as well as develop their own personal leadership style. This 3 month long program is so empowering and inspires the students to get out and do more in their communities following graduation. Each class is also responsible for a class project. These projects can be anything as long as it enhances the community in some way.

Over the years, classes have done everything from clearing weeds from the cemetery to raising money to construct the Veterans Wall in downtown. One of the largest projects done by the Leadership Class is the Plaza Arts Center. The center served as the old school for many years before being left to ruin. One of the Leadership Classes decided to raise money to see this building be restored into something the community would use and be proud of, thus the Plaza was created. The Chamber of Commerce also used this building as their office for nearly a decade before their recent move to Marion Street. "I am so proud of the Leadership Program," said Roddie Anne, "It feels good knowing that you are giving back to the community by training up a new generation of leaders."

"Roddie Anne gave me my first job opportunity after college and helped shape my career. Her dedication to community development sparked a passion in me for this work. I am not alone. Over the past 40 years, she has inspired her staff, members, volunteers and Leadership Putnam Graduates to become dedicated public servants of Putnam County."

The Putnam Campus of CGTC was opened in 2002. At the time, the Putnam Development Authority was under the Chamber and Roddie Anne doubled as its director. When she saw that there was an issue with student's transcripts being transferred from a technical school to other colleges and universities, she worked to solve this problem as well as to create a space where Putnam County residents can have a local place to get a higher education.

She served on the Board of the Technical College and through grant funding and donations from local industries and businesses, she solidified more than $500,000 to build the Putnam Campus of CGTC. Since then, the Chamber has been a huge supporter of the technical school and offers a $1,000 scholarship to a CGTC student every year.

The last 4 decades have seen a lot of changes to Eatonton and Putnam County and the Chamber has evolved along with it.

For the first 7 years of the Chamber, Roddie Anne was the only employee until she hired her first part-time employee in 1987. All documentation was typed using a typewriter and filed away in large file cabinets, which is so different than how things are done today! In 2005, the two full-time positions of Membership Manager and Tourism & Special Events Coordinator were created. "I never felt alone in this job," said Roddie Anne. "I have always thought of the Chamber as a team. I have had great employees and amazing Board Members over the years who supported the Chamber in so many ways."

The Chamber has also seen many fun events and programs that were designed to engage members and allow them to network with their business colleagues. These have included everything from Mystery Dinner Theater events to the infamous Sweet Tee Off Golf Tournament. Roddie Anne's favorite event though is the Annual Awards Banquet because she likes to recognize others in the community who are making an impact.

Roddie Anne and the Chamber of Commerce are one in the same. She has done an outstanding job of raising up an organization that is well known and respected in the region. In fact, she received the Legacy Award from the Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (GACCE) in 2016. This is the highest award that can be received by a Chamber Executive and is given to someone who has served the Chamber for many years and someone who has produced high quality work in their community. Roddie Anne is the longest serving Chamber Executive in Georgia.

As covered in our last issue, The Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors Center moved to a new location on Marion Street across from the Putnam County Courthouse. Because of COVID-19 complications, the Chamber was unable to hold a ribbon cutting event until state guidelines allowed. Opening new businesses to the public is one of the most important events the Chamber hosts, so having an event for our own new space is important to us.

With safety precautions in use, we hosted both an Open House and Ribbon Cutting on Friday, July 17, 2020. Members of the community were able to tour the newly renovated space throughout the day. That evening, Chamber President Roddie Anne Blackwell and the Chamber board cut the ribbon to officially open the space.

Holding this event was important to not only the opening of our space, but also showing the community we are capable of safely holding these type of events in our area.

Since the Chamber moved to the Marion Street location, many tourists and locals alike have asked "What did this place used to be?"

That is a valid question many people passing through downtown Eatonton must have.

Focusing just on the downtown block of Marion Street, various business ventures have operated the space throughout the last 140 years. Around the 1880s, the block consisted of multiple dry goods and general stores. A jeweler and a hardware store were added by 1900, but there was little changed about what goods people needed in Putnam County.

The specific space the Chamber is in had one claim to fame in 1913 when a fire broke out in the early morning hours in a separate unit of the block. At this time, the Hearn & Greene Hardware Store operated the space and live wire and powder kegs from the store added to the blaze. This news story was printed in many publications across Georgia at the time.

As a more stable southern economy emerged, so did the need for more specialized goods and services. By 1920, clothing and shoe stores, a grocery store, two banks, a drug store, and an auto service station were all just on this one strip of downtown Eatonton.

It is easy to imagine the hustle and bustle of just this one block of downtown. You could get your family's Ford Model A serviced while purchasing a new outfit and groceries for dinner, perhaps even stop in for a cool drink and snack at the restaurant that was on the block. Hopefully with the renewed interest in downtown Eatonton, this may be possible - 24 -once again.

Eatonton and Putnam County is becoming a popular filming destination for many hit movies, television shows and documentaries. One of the most recent projects was that of a movie entitled "Double Kidnapped" which depicts a couples journey to get their daughter back.

Filming took place over the course of several days and depicted several local backdrops including the Putnam County Courthouse and the Putnam County Elementary School. Director Michael Feifer allowed us to spectate during filming a few days and even got our staff and interns in on some of the action as extras! It was an amazing experience to see a project like this coming to life in real time.

You may also see some other local faces in this production as several of our high school students were cast as extras for the school scenes. They spent the entire day hanging out on set with the cast, crew and director. When we asked them what they thought, most of them responded that it was a really cool experience and they were really glad they chose to dedicate their time to being in the film.

We are always welcoming new production companies to the community to film. Eatonton and several local properties are listed on the Camera Ready website where location scouts can see what all we have to offer. In addition to this film, Eatonton has also been chosen for a Disney + film and a Marvel movie. We hope to continue to grow in this new industry and can't wait to show off all we have to offer!

Following the overwhelming response of the first round of Putnam County Strong t-shirts the Chamber sold in late April, they decided to include the community even further. As a way to get people out and shopping local, they decided that for the second round people would get to choose whether they wanted to purchase their shirts for full price or turn in receipts from local retailers, restaurants and businesses that totaled $100 or more to get their shirt for free!

Residents turned in over $2,000 worth of receipts! It was great to see the response and the support from the community!

The t-shirts are at the Chamber office and ready for pick up for those who ordered. The Chamber hopes that everyone continues to support our local businesses and will shop local when possible. LACEY CUMMINGS With my time at the Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce coming to an end, I would like to thank not only the Chamber but also the community. Not being from the area, I was able to meet many members of the community in my short time here. Although everyone was experiencing their own struggles during this spring and summer, everyone I met was so welcoming and helped me with anything I needed.

As part of my job, I was able to help the Chamber reopen and show off their new space on Marion Street. I also was able to help advertise other businesses who reopened throughout the summer, seeing local businesses come back from being closed for a few months is really important to me. I was also able to greet visitors and tourists, which have steadily increased throughout the summer.

After this summer, I plan to continue my degree through the Fall and graduate this December with a bachelor’s in Mass Communication from Georgia College. My time here has allowed me to advance my skills in both tourism and public relations and I am beyond grateful for the opportunities this job has given me. #PutnamCountyStrong

KANESHA LOWE My time at the Chamber of Commerce has been amazing. I came in at a time when everything was closed, and they invited me in with open arms. Even though my major is in Tourism & Hospitality, all of the ladies provided all of the leadership and guidance one would need!! I’ve learned so many things, met so many people, and evolved tremendously as a person due to this group of magnificent people. I would like to thank the staff and the board members for being nothing less than the best! I am so thankful for this opportunity.

My plan after this internship is to return to Central Georgia Technical College during the Fall to work toward my Associates Degree. Without this experience, I would not be where I needed to be. This experience gave me the tools that I need to interact with the Hospitality field no matter which way I decide to go! Thank you ladies!

My uncle and cousin started an insurance agency around the time I graduated from college. I planned to work for them temporarily while I looked for another job. I enjoyed what I was doing and worked toward becoming a licensed agent.
