Find it hard to enjoy the holidays and staying in shape? “It’s difficult not to fall into pitfalls like sugary snacks and fatty foods during the holidays. If you overindulge during this period, you might find yourself working hard from January to the summer to shed the extra pounds. With a little thoughtfulness and a few simple steps, your holidays will be better balanced, and you might not gain those extra pounds,” says health coach Ralph Moorman who shares 6 valuable tips to keep in shape during the holidays.

A great tip is showing up at the Christmas party with your homemade Oatmeal cookies.

It is a delightful surprise for the host and a healthy treat that you can enjoy guilt-free too.

Here is the easy recipe: Ingredients: • 150 grams of soft butter • 200 grams of oatmeal • 200 grams of chopped mixed nuts • 150 grams of dark chocolate, in pieces • 100 grams of cranberries • Half a teaspoon of tartar baking powder • 2 eggs • A pinch of salt Instructions: Preheat the oven to 200°C. Mix the ingredients together, except for the cranberries. For a firm dough, add 1 tablespoon of hot water. Divide the dough into small balls and flatten them.

Place the cookies on a greased baking sheet.

Garnish the cookies with cranberries. Bake the cookies for 25 minutes or until they are cooked through. Check regularly.

1 Plan Ahead Most parties have snacks like bread, cheese, salads, and lots of sweets. So make sure to eat something before you leave home. The less ‘hungry’ you are, the less likely you’ll eat the ‘wrong’ foods, and the less tempted you’ll be to eat more of them because you’re ‘already indulging.’

2 Keep It Simple Ensure that the meals you eat are easily digestible. And when you’re dining with friends or family, skip the crackers, bread, and sauces and opt for more vegetables dipped in hummus, as well as snacks like olives and salmon. To feel satisfied, make sure to combine good proteins, fresh vegetables, and healthy fats. If you keep your meals as simple, fresh, and natural as possible, your digestion and waistline will thank you!

3 Healthy Dining Out When dining out, the same ‘rules’ apply as when you’re eating at home; always combine a good carbohydrate with a healthy protein and a healthy source of fat. It’s easier to maintain your healthy weight and a good mood when your blood sugar is in balance. This is possible when you eat the right food combinations.

Examples include: • Choose an appetizer like a salad, olives, or seafood.

• Opt for grilled, baked, or steamed salmon, chicken, fish, seafood, or meat. Ask for extra vegetables and/ or brown rice instead of bread and fries.

• Ask for a combination of some carbohydrates (brown rice, sweet potatoes, legumes), vegetables, and proteins (veal, fish, eggs). Ask if the vegetables can be steamed, roasted, or cooked in garlic and olive oil.

4 Be Wise with Alcohol Remember that alcohol lowers your inhibitions and can lead you to eat more or make choices that aren’t good for your body. All alcohol is harmful, and your liver has to work overtime to process it. If your liver is too busy processing alcohol, it won’t be able to break down “fattening” hormones like oestrogen! So, if you really want a drink, go for red wine or a glass of vodka mixed with sparkling water. Alternate this with water.

5 Relax!

We are often stressed during the holidays. If we eat while experiencing stress, our digestion won’t function properly. So, take deep breaths from your belly regularly and be aware of what you’re eating. This way, you’ll be better able to resist sweets.

6 Bring Something Delicious Do two things at once by bringing healthy homemade oatmeal cookies. You’ll have a gift for the host/hostess, and at the same time, you’ll have a healthy snack for yourself.

Tortilla de Verduras Is a typical Spanish winter dish, which combines the simplicity of an omelette with a medley of vegetables.

This hearty, veggie and easy to prepare recipe is a perfect blend of flavours and textures.

Ingredients: • 6 eggs • 2 carrots • 250g green beans • 1/2 onion • 1/2 red bell pepper • 1 can of corn • 250ml vegetable broth • Salt (to taste) • Black pepper (to taste) • 1 teaspoon of oregano • A generous drizzle of extra virgin • Olive oil Instructions: Pre-cook the green beans until they are tender.

Dice the carrots, onion, and red bell pepper.

Heat a tortilla pan with a generous drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, and add the onion, red bell pepper, and carrots. Sauté them until they are tender.

Add the vegetable broth, pepper, salt, and oregano to the pan, and let it simmer for a few minutes.

Drain the vegetables and place them in a large bowl.

Add the pre-cooked green beans and drained corn to the bowl, and mix everything well.

In another bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff, and then gradually add the 34

egg yolks while continuing to mix until everything is well combined.

Add the vegetable mixture to the eggs and stir everything thoroughly.

Take the tortilla pan, heat it again with a generous drizzle of olive oil.

Once the oil is hot, pour the mixture into the pan.

Reduce the heat after a few minutes and cover the tortilla with the other side of the pan.

After 2 minutes, flip the pan to cook the other side of the tortilla.

When the tortilla is golden brown on both sides, slide it carefully onto a plate.

Slice it into wedges and serve it warm.

Sopa de Pescado This Spanish fish soup, is a flavourful and comforting dish that combines a variety of seafood and vegetables in a rich and aromatic broth.

Ingredients: • 450g assorted fish, shrimp, and mussels • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, minced • 1 red bell pepper, chopped • 1 green bell pepper, chopped • 1 carrot, sliced • 1 celery stalk, sliced • 1 small leek, sliced • 1 tomato, chopped • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 cup dry white wine • 8 cups fish or seafood broth • 1 bay leaf • 1/2 teaspoon saffron threads

• Salt and black pepper to taste • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish • Crusty bread, for serving Instructions: Clean and chop the assorted fish into bite-sized pieces.

In a large soup pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and garlic, and sauté until they become translucent.

Add the red and green bell peppers, carrots, celery, leeks, and tomatoes to the pot. Cook the vegetables for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Pour in the white wine and let it simmer for a few minutes until it reduces slightly.

Add the fish or seafood broth to the pot, along with the bay leaf and saffron threads. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Bring the soup to a simmer and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

Gently add the assorted fish and seafood to the simmering soup. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.

Remove the bay leaf from the pot and discard it.

Serve the Sopa de Pescado hot, garnished with freshly chopped parsley. It’s traditionally served with crusty bread for dipping. Enjoy your delicious Spanish fish soup.

It was not the first exhibition of the artist Barbara Bartels-Leipold that ended with a finissage at the Teatro in Beniarbeig on 30 September. And yet it was a premiere in two respects: because it was the first exhibition in her new adopted country Spain and the first with a completely different material than usual: acrylic paintings on old sailcloth, which bears all the traces of a 50-year life on the world’s oceans, including the Mediterranean, such as rope edges, seams, tears, sewnon patches ...

A life for Art...

Barbara Bartels-Leipold has been drawing since childhood. In 1992 she was one of the founding members of the „Kunstverein Delmenhorst“ and for many years she regularly participated in the annual exhibitions with her large-format graphite drawings.

In the 1980s, Barbara BartelsLeipold spent every free minute on the water as a windsurfer. She learned to windsurf at a yacht school on the Zwischenahner Meer next to the studio of the painter Puck Steinbrecher, whom she could watch painting in the shop window.

From 2012 to 2015, she was City Councillor responsible for Cultures of the city of Delmenhorst and dedicated her work to the city’s cultural institutions, including the Theater, the museum, the Cultural Office, the gallery Haus Coburg and the music school. Barbara Bartels-Leipold also plays the tenor saxophone passionately, preferably jazz standards of the 1930s, a time from which her saxophone also originates.

In the 1990s she sailed the North Sea with friends, saw all the North Frisian Islands, nearly all the and East Frisian Islands and the offshore island of Helgoland. In 1991, she travelled as a crew member aboard the sail training ship “Großherzogin Elisabeth” on a three-week Scandinavian voyage to Danmark, Sweden and as far as the Åland Islands in Finland and the way back through the Kiel Canal to the home port of Elsfleth on the river Weser.

...and the history of the inspiration to paint on used old sails Already in the early 1990s Barbara Bartels-Leipold was fascinated by the North German painter Ole West, who created maritime motifs, especially lighthouses, on old used nautical maps. It was probably this upcycling idea that gave her many years later the inspiration to paint on old sails. Using old, used materials for her art is very important to her as a EU Climate Pact Ambassador in terms of sustainability.

Anecdote In August, the „Andalucía“ visited Bremerhaven for the Maritime Days and met the „Großherzogin Elisabeth“ among other traditional sailing vessels. Whether the „Nordwind“ was also there with her new white sails remains her secret.

In search of old sails, the artist found what she was looking for at the „Tuchwerkstatt Greifwald“ and bought two of the decommissioned, 50-year-old sails of the over 120-year-old steel sailing yacht „Nordwind“. She cut up the sails, which were almost 50 square metres in size and weighed 45 kg, washed, framed and primed them, sewed riggings for the ends of the ropes and began to experiment with the new, unfamiliar materials, first small, then bigger and bigger.

Many of the canvases are absolutely unique due to the traces of their life at sea. The slanted beach bar in the thunderstorm was created on a sewn-on patch, the light tubes on sewing thread. One of the most recent and largest paintings shows the Galleon Andalucía, whose bow was created near a sewn-on tear, during her visit to Denia.

The most important tip I can give to prevent a yo-yo effect is to thoroughly examine yourself and your behaviour. Then, step by step, you can develop a lifestyle that suits you seamlessly. The only thing that matters is how you can improve your average in the long term. Take a helicopter view of your lifestyle.

Start with the most significant focus areas and pitfalls, not the details.

Come up with solutions and put your agreements on paper. You are, in a way, your own guru. Creating a customized plan for yourself works much better than copying someone else’s lifestyle.

Striving for perfection is almost impossible and often leads to disappointment. This can, in turn, result in a relapse into old behaviour.

Therefore, don’t be too strict. In fact, those in good shape occasionally loosen the reins. It’s better to eat one cookie every day than to deprive yourself all week and devour a whole pack over the weekend. If you restrict yourself too much, your brain and the body’s survival mechanism patiently wait for a weak moment.

3 Eat a variety of foods Eating a variety of foods is important for spreading risks. This minimizes the chance of consuming too much of the bad and too little of the good. Each food contains both

5 Do things that energize you The factor of stress is often overlooked. You often hear, ‘Stress happens, and you can’t do anything about it.’ This is not the case at all. You may not always be able to change the source of stress, but you can change how you deal with it. When stress decreases and you become more positive, it’s beneficial for all aspects of vitality.
