THE TYPICAL SPANISH SIGNATURE DRINK

From backyard barbecues to tapas bars, sangria is the summertime Spanish signature drink. This wine cocktail has a great history, tracing back to an early Greek and Roman drink called “hippocras” with its ingredients of wine, sugar, spices, and varied ingredients. A similar drink showed up in Spain around 1100 B.C. and became our beloved sangria.

MAIN INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

The basic ingredients of sangria are wine, some sort of sweetener, a liqueur, soda or other non-alcoholic mixer, and fruit. Typically, red wine is the base.

In a punch bowl, combine all the ingredients and stir. Ideally, refrigerate sangria for at least two hours or overnight. Sangria can last in the refrigerator for several days. Add a half-liter of soda water just before serving over ice.

Here are the ingredients for our classic sangria recipe: • 2 bottles of Rioja wine • 250 ml of triple sec (or Cointreau) • 250 ml of brandy • 250 ml of simple syrup • 4 oranges (2 sliced, 2 squeezed) • 1 sliced apple • 15 red grapes • 15 blackberries or strawberries • 1 sliced lemon • 1 sliced lime • 1 half-liter of soda water

RED, WHITE, ROSÉ OR SPARKLING SANGRIA “Sangria” is Spanish for “blood,” referring to the drink’s traditional base of red wine. If you’re going classic, look for a Spanish red wine like Rioja or other Tempranillo-based wine.

But anything goes really. When you like white wine, then make a light and refreshing white wine sangria.

Or a sparkling sangria with cava. Or a rosé sangria. Be creative.

Sangria with white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio pair well with cucumber and lemon. Rosé sangria is great with peaches, melon, and citrus. Pick inexpensive (but still tasty) rosés like Liquid Geography Rosado from Bierzo, Bodegas Muga Rosado from Rioja, or Blanc Pescador Rosé for fresh red-fruit flavours.

ADD FRUIT As with most punches, sangria is incredibly versatile. Recipes call for everything from chopped pineapple and peaches, to apples and pears, to strawberries and sliced citrus.

One good rule of thumb is to add fruits of which flavours are present in your wine. If your chosen bottle has strawberries on the nose, quarter some fresh ones. Picking up some green apple on the finish of that unoaked Chardonnay? Grab a Granny Smith and start slicing. The same is true for peaches, lemons, cherries, and so on.

MAKE IT STRONG These days, many sangrias have a little extra booze in them to bump up the alcohol content. Add brandy or a flavoured liqueur.

EASY ON THE SUGAR It can be. Sangria is as sweet as you make it. As a general rule, it’s going to be fruity, so start with a dry red wine to keep that sugar content down. Pick fruits that lean more tart than sweet (like Granny Smith apples rather than white peaches), add more acidic juice like lemonade, or simply don’t add sugar to your mixture.

SERVING TIPS If you’ve got a punch bowl, use it. If not, sangria can be served in a simple pitcher. If you’re planning to sip that sangria all day (or save it in your fridge for the whole weekend), go for a punch dispenser.

ROYAL SANGRIA Prepare a refined sangria with cava.

Fresh, fruity and bubbly. It is quick and simple. In a high flute glass, add a dash of sweet liquor like 43, Cointreau or Grand Marnier.

Fill up with chilled Cava. Top off with some pomegranate and rosemary.

Toast with friends. ¡Salud!

costILLAs de cerdo, spare ribs (2-3 persons) Here is a great recipe to prepare Spanish spare ribs. They are nowhere as tasty as those you prepared in your own backyard. These spare ribs are tender and sweet and get a nice kick due to the chilli pepper.

Before smoking these spare ribs for at least 2.5 and 3 hours at 140°C, fill the BBQ with charcoal and some apple or olive wood to ensures a mild smoke flavour.

While the ribs are smoking there is enough time to prepare the sauce and to socialize with your guests. The last 10 minutes brush the spare ribs with sauce again.

Serve with a fresh salad and patatas bravas.

IngredIents • 4 baby back ribs For the marinade: • 4 tbsp honey • 4 tbsp olive oil • 2 tsp coarse salt • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 2 tsp smoked paprika powder • 3 cloves garlic (chopped) • 2 tsp cinnamon • 1/2 tsp chilli pepper • 4 tbsp smoked ketchup InstructIons • Prepare the grill with charcoal and apple or olive wood and maintain 140°C • Mix the ingredients for the marinade and cover the spare ribs on all sides.

• Place the spare ribs bone-down on the grill, close the lid and smoke them for 2.5 to 3 hours • When the ribs are to your liking, brush them with the marinade and leave them on the grill for another 10 minutes to caramelize.

• Serve the spare ribs with the rest of the marinade sauce.

PInchos morunos (2-3 persons) The pincho or Spanish satay is usually served in tapas restaurants.

This pinchos morunos recipe is easy to prepare and is a nice change from a traditional barbecue.

Originally, these pinchos are made from lamb, but this recipe is prepared with pork tenderloin.

You can change the marinade to your own taste. We often throw in some extra chipotle pepper because we like a bit of spice. Be careful with the lemon juice. If you want the pork tenderloin to marinate for more than 6 hours, or if you’re going to prepare everything a day earlier. Then it is better to leave out the lemon juice and add some lemon slices just before serving. After marinating, you string the meat on skewers.

Do you know the secret for tender pork tenderloin? Lean pork such as pork tenderloin should not be cooked hotter than 65 to 70°C. At higher temperatures the meat will be dry and chewy.

IngredIents • 400 grams of pork tenderloin • 1 onion • 2 cloves of garlic • 2 tsp paprika • ½ tsp chipotle pepper • ½ tsp turmeric • ¼ tsp ground cumin • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp dry sherry • salt and pepper for taste InstructIons • Cut the pork tenderloin into cubes of about 2 to 3 cm • Chop the onion and grate the garlic • Prepare a marinade with the rest of the ingredients except the salt and pepper • Mix the pork tenderloin with the marinade and cool it in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 hours • Thread the diced meat on skewers and sprinkle the skewers all around with salt and pepper.

Summer drink Horchata is a delicious cold or iced summer drink that you can find at most Spanish and other latin restaurants. It originated in Spain as a nut beverage (horchata de chufa, made of tiger nuts) but when imported to the Americas, it quickly transformed into the Mexican rice horchata, its most commonly known form. The main ingredients are grains and nuts, water, spices, and dates.

Horchata is usually dairy-free, some are gluten-free. Almond milk is mostly used together with ground tiger nuts, lemon zest and cinnamon.

It is popular for its refreshing touch to any meal. Horchata goes well with almost any latin recipe like tacos, pork carnitas, tostadas, chorizo, charro beans and many others.

Easy to make When horchata is well prepared with a lot of love and fresh ingredients everybody likes it. Made from powder they totally miss that authentic taste.

One of the great things about a good horchata recipe is that you can add different ingredients to it to change the taste. Be creative and put some of your character into your horchata.

Add shredded coconut or almonds.

Or use a different variety of milk such as coconut or rice milk. Spice it up a bit or add some 43 liquor.

Horchata is smooth and rich, and has just the right amount of sweetness.

Horchata is, in essence, a simple and humble beverage. Over the centuries this basic recipe has been enhanced with a variety of other flavours like edible flowers or fruits. The ancient Spanish recipe, still consumed during the hot months of the year, is made of tiger nuts and provides a good source of creamy protein for people who can’t consume lactose.

Add your own signature Mexicans make it with rice milk and Puerto Rico has its own version, made of sesame seeds and spices.

Central American nations follow the same overnight soaking process to make beverages of seeds, legumes, spices, grains, and herbs.

Mexican horchata, simply made with rice and sugar, has no substantial amounts of protein or vitamins.

Depending on the ingredients, different horchatas can provide different benefits but it all comes down to the grain, sweeteners, or high-protein nuts or seeds used in the recipe, or if dairy is added or not.

For beverages containing legumes, nuts, seeds, or dairy, the protein benefits are high, and so is the caloric content thanks to the fat content of almonds, pistachios, cashews, and peanuts, included in horchata recipes of different origins.

De rode wijnen van Dehesa el Carrascal zijn van hoge kwaliteit, zeer intens, gekleurd en aromatisch. De Almarina witte wijn is een een zomerse Verdejo/Sauvignon blanc. De wijnen van het wijnhuis La Cepa de Pelayo zijn het resultaat van een zorgvuldige voorbereiding van elk van hen, waarbij versheid en fruit de hoofdrol spelen. Wij kunnen u dan ook diverse rode, (zoete) witte en een diep roze gekleurde rosé aanbieden.

Sailing is one of the most popular water sports in the region, thanks to its soft winds and the number of sailing schools for beginners. This is followed by windsurfing, kite surfing, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, rowing and standup paddleboarding (SUP)

Surfing and windsurfing Surfing in Alicante is no easy feat, since the coastline of the Valencia region is not a major international destination for surfing. For good waves to appear on its coastline, the conditions have to be just right, which isn’t always the case. Nevertheless, surfing spots do exist, although there are only a handful along the Costa Blanca.

One of the main obstacles for surfing in Alicante is that it rarely produces enough of what is known as groundswell. However, such limitations are partially alleviated by the waves created by the wind.

Therefore, the best spots for surfing in Alicante are situated in places with frequent and stable winds.

of the most famous is on the vast San Juan Beach, situated between the municipal boundaries of Alicante and El Campello. The easterly-facing beach stretches on for three kilometres and boasts fine sand and crystalline water with waves that break on both the left and right.

The province has one added bonus however. Since the sport is not very popular among the people of Alicante, surfing spots are inevitably not full of local wave riders. Which is why the province has become a big draw for surfers who escape for a few days to a nearby beach and enjoy their favourite sport.

Since it is so big, it has various spots: the busiest is situated where the former Hotel Sidi once stood. Another spot is Puntal, at the tip of Cap del’Horta.

A third spot is located in front of the lighthouse, although this is reserved for days in which the sea is particularly choppy. In any case, the best time to surf in this area is when the wind is blowing in a westerly direction.

Beach, situated in the northern half of the long strip of sand. At its most northerly point is the spot known as La Zofra, a favourite of local surfers on days with north-westerly winds. The best time of the year for surfing on San Juan Beach is in the winter.

In the municipal district of Villajoyosa is the spot known as El Centro, which has a rocky ocean floor. Here the swell must be southerly or southwesterly with moderate winds. Under these conditions, left-hand waves of up to two metres with some tubular sections may appear. The best time to enjoy this spot is when there are strong easterly winds.

Alicante boasts surfing schools with a very good reputation. The fact 76

that waves are moderate and the conditions for practising the sport in the area are unusual, make the coast of Alicante a great place to start out, rent equipment and take water sports classes.

SUP and kitesurfing Other disciplines can also be spotted on the Costa Blanca beaches, such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and, above all, SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding).

Many of the surfing schools also offer courses or equipment hire for kitesurfing, windsurfing and paddleboarding.

Kitesurfing is particularly abundant in Alicante, boasting specific schools for kitesurfing. The city has various spots, one of which is loved among

kitesurfers: the area around the northern breakwater at the port of Denia. The area gets constant thermal winds of between 12 and 20 knots in the spring-summer period, which are perfect for large kites (between nine and 12 metres), as well as strong north-westerly winds that are ideal for kites measuring between seven and nine metres.

Alicante-born Daniel Parres, owner of the aforementioned club Parres WaterSports. The centre organises the World SUP Festival on the coast of Alicante, a festival that has gradually become a leading event at international level for this fun sport.

Muchavista Beach in El Campello is also home to one of the main spots on the coast of Alicante: Tobago, which has strong north-westerly and easterly winds in both winter and summer.

In Alicante, much like along the rest of the Spanish coast, SUP, otherwise known as paddleboarding, has also taken hold in recent years. One of the people that has done the most to introduce Spain to SUP is, in fact, the EAT, DRINK &MORE

Fernando Alonso (born 29 July 1981) is the best Spanish F1 racing driver.

He won the series’ World Drivers’ Championship in 2005 and 2006 with Renault, having also driven for McLaren, Ferrari and Minardi. With Toyota, Alonso won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice, in 2018 and 2019, and the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2018-19. In 2019, he won the 24 Hours of Daytona with Wayne Taylor Racing. Go-karting Born in Oviedo, Asturias in a workingclass family, he began go-karting at the age of three and achieved success in local, national and world championships.

Alonso progressed to car racing at age 17, winning the Euro Open by Nissan in 1999 and was fourth in the International Formula 3000 Championship of 2000.

Youngest champion He debuted in Formula One with Minardi in 2001 before joining Renault as a test driver for 2002. Promoted to a race seat in 2003, Alonso won two drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006, becoming (at the time) the youngest pole80

After finishing third with McLaren in 2007, he returned to Renault for 2008 and 2009 and won two races in the former year for fifth overall. Alonso drove for Ferrari from 2010 to 2014, finishing runner-up to Sebastian Vettel in three tightly-contested title duels in 2010, 2012, and 2013. A second stint with McLaren from 2015 to 2018 resulted in no further success.

Winner Overall, Alonso won 32 Formula One races, 22 pole positions, and 1,899

points from 311 starts. He is the only Spanish Formula One driver to have won both a Grand Prix and the World Championship.

He won the 2001 Race of Champions Nations Cup with the rally driver Jesús Puras and the motorcyclist Rubén Xaus for Team Spain and thrice entered the Indianapolis 500 in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Awards Alonso has been awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, the Premios Nacionales del Deporte Sportsman of the Year Award and the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit and has twice been inducted into the FIA Hall of Fame. He runs an eSports and junior racing team and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

McLaren He remained at McLaren as a brand ambassador to aid and advise drivers and drove in select test sessions to develop their cars. Alonso drove the MCL34 during a two-day in-season post-race Bahrain test in April 2019 to develop tyres for Pirelli.

No further runs were planned for him and McLaren focused on their current drivers. Alonso’s ambassador contract with McLaren expired at the end of 2019, and was not renewed for 2020.

Alpine Alonso is contracted to drive for Alpine F1 Team for the 2021 and 2022 seasons, after Renault rebranded the team name to Alpine from 2021 onwards. In preparation for his Formula One return, Alonso performed four testing days driving the Renault R.S.18 and topped the timing charts in the post 2020 season young driver’s test driving the Renault

R.S.20 for Renault. In his first race with Alpine he had to retire after debris entered his brake duct.

Greatest F1 driver ever Alonso is often regarded as one of the greatest Formula One drivers in the history of the sport. Journalists and fellow drivers regarded Alonso as a fast and consistent driver who can extract additional pace from a car in all weathers and all tracks.

Fisichella said Alonso understands when to go faster and when to preserve his tyres in a race. Former racing driver and the Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle described Alonso as “Senna-like in his intimate feel for where the grip is” and cited the driver’s knowledge on how much grip to use for the entry to a turn.

Driving style He drives aggressively and uses a braking area to put a car into a corner without losing speed exiting it. This allows Alonso to keep it “on the edge of adhesion” and it has been observed during a qualifying session and the first laps of a race. He uses more of his ability longer than other drivers and is better able to understand his personal limits.

His experience increased his awareness of events around him and competitors in a race and adjusted his situation to focus on the drivers’ championship.

Alonso is an all-round driver who can mount an apex and correct a sliding car to go faster. He is careful in finding the ideal feeling with his brakes and can apply the maximum amount of force with a fast response time.

Alonso’s physical strength contrasts his braking skill and regularly exceeded that limit without overdoing it on multiple EAT, DRINK &MORE

conditions. According to Jonathan Noble of Motorsport.com, this allows Alonso to “create a kind of natural ABS, fully exploiting tyre grip to achieve greater speeds while turning without locking the wheels.”

Helmet Alonso’s helmet manufactured by Bieffe (2001), Arai (2003-2009, 2016), Schuberth (2010-2015), Bell (2017) has the yellow and red colours of the flag of Spain with shades of blue from the Asturias flag coupled with two silver thunderbolt arrows derived from a remote control car he received as a present in his childhood on top.

At the 2017 Indianapolis 500 and the 2017 United States Grand Prix, Alonso sported a black helmet with red, yellow and blue stripes around it and his race number. He revised the livery for the 2018 24 Hours of Daytona to white instead of black and had no stripes around the front. The back had the layout of the Daytona International Speedway and continued to have his usual blue, red and yellow colours.

In 2018 Alonso changed its front livery to be predominantly blue with the back top lighter blue and the rear red and yellow.[128] His helmet for the 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was divided equally between the flag of Spain on the right with a blue-checkered pattern around its side. The yellow on that area was replaced by gold between two horizontal stripes in red and a thick vertical strip was added with a list of Alonso’s 32 Formula One race victories.[129] Car number For the 2014 season, the FIA created a new regulation that allows a driver to select a car number for use throughout 82

their Formula One career. Alonso requested the number 14 for it has been his lucky number since he had won the world karting championship at the age of 14 on 14 July 1996.

Eloquent speaker Nate Saunders of ESPN writes that Alonso “is one of the most eloquent speakers in Formula One and one of the best at interacting with the media”. He occasionally uses press conference with the press to cultivate particular narratives of a story, convey himself as controlling the Formula One driver market or as the one with knowledge of facts of a situation.

Alonso dislikes fame, prefers a private life, and Chris Jenkins for USA Today described him as a shy individual. He eschews expensive habits and items, and in his early career brought an entourage of childhood friends to Formula One races. Alonso is an atheist and a non-believer in destiny.

Image His public persona is very different from his private personality. Fellow Spaniard driver Carlos Sainz Jr. noted “there are two Fernandos”, alluding to Alonso’s defensive nature when criticised because of his shyness, compared to his sense of humour, generosity and kindnature when not racing.

Museum The Fernando Alonso Sports Complex in Oviedo was opened in June 2015 and features a CIK-FIA compliant karting track featuring 29 layouts. A museum dedicated to his racing career called ‘Museo y Circuito Fernando Alonso’ opened in the same year and features Alonso’s race cars, helmets, overalls and memorabilia.

1. Peñon de Ifach, Calpe Length: 5.6 km Free parking at Carr. del Peñon Level: Medium (short but tough) This rock is the icon of the Costa Blanca and is a must for adventurous hikers. With a height of 332 meters

you would think it is a walk in the park, but make no mistake. The first part of the walk is easy until you come to a tunnel. Here you already have a nice view, especially at sunrise or sunset.

2. Sierra Helada Natural Park

As soon as you come out of the tunnel, the real work begins. Prepare for a brisk climb until you reach the top.

The rocks you walk on can be slippery and sharp. Therefore, make sure to use the chains and ropes attached to the rocks for safety. After all, people are taken off the mountain by helicopter every week due to carelessness. Good footwear is a must.

This route runs from one end of the Sierra Helada Natural Park in Albir to the other end in Benidorm. This is not a walking loop. So when you are by car you will have to get back to the starting point in Albir by bus number 10 or by taxi.

Once you have reached the top, you will be treated to great views of the Costa Blanca’s coastline. Ideal to overcome your fear of heights.

Length: 8.7 km Free parking at Faro de l’Albir End: Levante Beach Benidorm Level: Medium (steep and rocky)

Along the way you will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the steep cliffs, the sea and the skyline of Benidorm. For that reason alone, this walk is worthwhile.

climbing and descending, this hike is often underestimated.

3. The 6000 steps trail in Fleix Length: 14.5 km Free parking in Fleix Level: Intermediate (Quite some height meters with many loose stones and many stairs. Leave early and bring plenty of food and drinking water) The 6000 stair walk in Fleix is an adventure and does not get boring.

Moreover, this hike is one of the most popular in the region. This should certainly not be missed if you want to take beautiful hikes near the Costa Blanca.

Start in the village of Fleix. From the parking lot you follow the road for a while and then dive into the first valley on the right taking a small path.

The road has a lot of loose stones from time to time. Along the way you will come across old wells and ruins.

Especially the valley, El Barranco del Infierno, is impressive.

It is great to encounter a waterfall here or there. The riverbed consists of bright white stones and is the ideal place to relax and refuel.

From the valley it goes continuously uphill via the old stairs that zigzag upwards. After about 9 miles you come back to the parking lot in Fleix.

Only for fans of a lot of stairs.

Parque Natural del Marjal de Pego Oliva Pedro Angeles Editor

Pego-Oliva Natural Park is a wetland surrounded by mountains which is located between the provinces of Valencia and Alicante and between the towns of Pego and Oliva. Within its 1,250 ha area we find an extensive zone of reed beds, rice fields and lagoons crossed by a network of rivers, irrigation canals and channels, which form a natural area of great wealth and productivity.

Through the channels and irrigation canals, the Bullent and Racons rivers, which border the wetland to the north and the south, respectively, feed the entire wetland area. This circumstance facilitates rice cultivation (the “Bomba” variation is grown in the area) and maintains the Special

Protection Zone, which covers the wetland, permanently flooded.

In these areas, which are partially or permanently flooded throughout the year, we can observe a great diversity of birds (whiskered tern, swan, ducks, herons, squacco, rails, coots, etc.), fish

(with valuable endemic and protected species) and plants, such as cattails and yellow lilies. The excellent quality of the water in the Pego-Oliva Natural Park allows for the existence of the best-conserved underwater vegetation in all the Spanish wetlands. The area has extensive underwater meadows

that play host and provide a habitat to a rich variety of fauna, including several protected, endangered or endemic species, such as the whiskered tern, the Valencia toothcarp, river prawn, the marbled teal, squacco heron, the horned owl, the European pond turtle and the blenny, among others.

What to do What we mainly do when we are in the area is to visit this beautiful natural spot. The visit includes walks around all the areas, where you can appreciate its clean and beautiful waters, as well as different biodiversity, both birds, vegetation and different species of fish.

It is worth mentioning that in the Pego Marsh you can observe a species of fish called Samaruc. The reason for the near extinction of this species is given by the action of man in the surroundings of the Pego Marsh, with the extraction of an abusive way of the aquifers and alteration of the beds and banks of the rivers. It has also been influenced by the use of 108

chemicals in the surrounding fields that filter through the soil and reach the habitat of this and other species in danger of extinction.

Where to park There are different points where parking is allowed, one of them next to the source of the Salinar River and another near the well-known Font Salada. Once the car has been parked, you certainly will enjoy your hike in this beautiful park.

Getting there Take the N332 we choose the deviation in Pego at the level of the

company Interfruit. The CV768 road crosses the park from east to west. If you come by the AP7, take the Oliva-

Pego exit from Valencia and OlivaGandia from Alicante, to get to the N332. Enjoy.

10 paintings by artist Peter Engels destroyed in a gigantic storage fire An exhibition with artworks by portrait painter Peter Engels would soon have started in the Never Give Up art gallery in the Belgian coast village KnokkeZoute. The artist made the headlines when his portrait of Nelson Mandela that was shown in Times Square on the largest billboard in the world when Mandela turned 90.

Just weeks ago, a major fire reduced a Belgian garden company to ashes.

The adjacent storage facility that held 10 recent paintings by artist Peter Engels also went up in flames.

The large, recently painted portraits were to be exhibited at the famous “Never Give Up” art gallery in Knokke.

Prince Albert of Monaco bought the portrait of his mother Princes Grace Kelly. And Virgin boss Richard Branson was painted “live” by Peter Engels.

He met and painted jazz legend Toots Thielemans and Belgian princess Astrid. He met fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld in New York and painted his portrait. Lagerfeld was deeply impressed and called Peter Engels “the painter of the soul”.

Actress Nicole Kidman lived briefly in Peter Engels’ hometown, where he painted her portrait. And Peter Engels studied the rare well-preserved sculptures of the Greek philosopher Hippocrates and painted his true portrait.

Peter Engels was commissioned to paint the portrait of late cosmetics tycoon Estée Lauder to revive her villa in Cannes, southern France. He was also commissioned to make a sculpture of the beautiful Queen Rania of Jordan.

The mayor of the southern French village of Mougins commissioned Peter Engels to create the statue of Michelin star chef and father of “nouvelle cuisine” Roger Vergé. The large sculpture was placed in the Mougins marketplace. A miniature of the sculpture serves as an award for Roger Vergé’s international chef competition.

Peter Engels also painted many commissions of men, women and

children. But also captains of industry, family portraits, dogs and purebred horses.

Never Give Up The planning was that the destroyed paintings would be exhibited in the Never Give Up art gallery in KnokkeZoute at the Belgian coast. Peter Engels painted the works under the theme “Bond & Girls”. It took him about two years to create them.

Obviously, a large portrait of the current James Bond actor Daniel Craig could not be missed in this collection. With the classic Bond car in the background of the canvas, his Aston Martin DB5. The same car featured in the portrait of Bond actor Pierce Brosnan. The life-size portrait of Sean Connery, who died in October 2020, would certainly have turned out to be a masterpiece. Peter Engels met Roger Moore and painted several portraits of him. For this exhibition Engels made EAT, DRINK &MORE

a new one. Striking detail: these Bond paintings are without weapons, but with martinis, shaken not stirred, a toast to a happy future.

The paintings of Monica Bellucci, Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz and two portraits of Brigitte Bardot were also lost.

Most paintings had a separate canvas on which an inspiring quote from the person concerned was painted. These too were consumed by the fire.

Last summer, Peter Engels painted the “live” portrait of the Dutch pop artist Loes Van Delft, who has also exhibited several times in the Never Give Up gallery. That portrait has also been lost.

Peter Engels is severely affected because two years of work were lost in this fire.

But he does not want to give up and he will quickly pick up the pace. “Today I will paint again,” he says. “Like a pilot who is behind the control stick within 24 hours after the crash.”

Animal lovers can choose where to watch them up close in Alicante. There are a few leisure parks and zoos scattered around the Costa Blanca. Their particular characteristics make these parks unique, suitable for all tastes and adapted to all ages. Terra Natura, Mundomar, or the Safaris Aitana and Río Elche and Oceanogràfic are ideal to visit with your family.

Terra Natura zoo All animal parks at the Costa Blanca are highly recommended. But if we must highlight one zoo in Alicante, that would be Terra Natura. Right next to the amusement park Terra Mítica, this open-air zoo of Benidorm allows

the visitor to observe and make contact with animals in designed spaces that recreate the habitat of each of the species through invisible barriers. Terra Natura houses more than 1,500 animals of more than two hundred species distributed by thematic areas that take the name

Safari Aitana In the region of L’Alcoià, the traveller and his family can enjoy a day full of sensorial emotions in the Safari Aitana, a reserve for wild animals from five continents. With more than a million and a half square meters of extension located next to the municipality of Penáguila, it is the only safari in the Region accessible by car. The animals can be seen in semifreedom, similarly to their natural habitat.

Rio Safari de Elche Another animal park to take into account in the province of Alicante is Rio Safari de Elche. Considered one of the most advanced conservation centres in Europe, more than a hundred different species of animals coexist in its facilities.

One aspect that must be taken into account is the conservation work

of endangered species carried out

by Rio Safari. They collaborate with other homologous centres in the Old Continent to care for the most persecuted specimens in captivity.

Primates and other apes abound in this enclosure.

Municipal Aquarium of Alicante is advised by the Instituto de Ecología Litoral and has educational purposes. Fun for the whole family.

In the capital of Alicante, there are no zoos, but there is a public aquarium full of fish that attracts the attention of children and adults. It has six tanks with different species of the Mediterranean Sea, such as rays, small-spotted catsharks, flat head grey mullet, pipefish, castanets or red mullet.
