The most concerning issue that has grabbed the attention of the entire country as of late is undoubtedly the drought, which not only arrived earlier than last year but is also much more drastic. Many fear that the 2016 drought is the most severe in 20 years.

Getting through this drought isn’t about the responsibility of one particular party or organization. All of us as individuals need to put in the effort because this year’s water crisis is definitely “NO JOKE”.

PEAK Before WATER Warning Water Exhaustion We used to believe that water is a natural resource that will never run dry because it has an endless natural cycle. Even though we experience drought in some years, everyone feels assured that the “WATER WILL COME BACK.”

This misconception is a result of the human inability to see the limits of natural resources, especially those continuously produced by nature, such as air, the ocean, and freshwater resources. That’s why humans continue to waste resources at a pace quicker than the ability of nature to replenish them, thus the many crises concerning natural resources today.

PEAK WATER

LIMIT OF WATER RESOURCE Peak water is a concept underlining the constraints on the availability, quality, and use of freshwater resources, a term recently defined by Peter Gleick and Meena Palaniappan. In their 2010 article entitled “Peak Water: Limits to Freshwater Withdrawal and Use,” the two authors explain that although there seems to be a vast, endless amount of water on the planet, it can become scarce if not effectively managed. This is due to the fact that the world is using water with an amount and at a pace beyond the ability of the natural water cycle to generate fresh water.

Gleick and Palaniappan also make an interesting comparison between water and petroleum; while petroleum can be replaced by many substitutes, such solar and wind energy, nothing can substitute water. Lester R. Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute, wrote in 2013 that peak water is “the real threat to our future.”

MANY MEASURES

TO HANDLE PEAK WATER Ultimately, peak water isn’t about running out of freshwater, but about reaching physical, economic, and environmental limits on meeting human demands for water for present use.

There’s a prediction that if the present trends continue, 1.8 billion people will be living with absolute water scarcity by 2025, and two-thirds of the world could be subject to water stress, a state of severe water scarcity that results in conflict between people that often expands into a local or regional dispute.

As the dwindling availability of water contrasts its increased demand, we have to consider ways to handle this issue. The first measure is to reduce water use, for example, developing campaigns for or regulations on economical use of water. The second measure has to do with how water is used, switching from usage with low social and economic value to that with high value.

The third measure is to shift demands to areas with water sufficiency. The last measure is to make higher investments, such as to transfer water from another source or invest in the limitless seawater. Today, many areas opt for the fourth measure, which has a high cost, to solve their water crisis. These localities include Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Singapore.

The concept of water peak doesn’t answer when we’ll run out of fresh water. It is a warning that on this Blue Planet only 3.5% of the water on earth is fresh water and of this amount less than 1% is usable. Once explained this way, many people now start to see clearly that there is a limit on freshwater availability in contrast to the demand globally and that the issue of sustainable water management is closer to all of us than one may think.

NUREK NUREK DAM THE WORLD’S SECOND HIGHEST DAM Nobody would imagine Nurek Dam to be located in Tajikistan, a low- profile country that was once a part of the Soviet Union.

The Nurek Dam was constructed by the Soviet Union between 1961-1972.

The dam is located in a deep gorge along the Vakhsh River, in Western Tajikistan about 75 km from the capital Dushanbe. Close to the dam is the residences of the workers and officials looking after the dam.

Although Tajikistan is the poorest country in the Commonwealth of Independent States–Tajikistan is scarce natural resources and landlocked geography, Shanghai Cooperation Organization has named Tajikistan a most power player and the world’s highest hydroelectric power producer, with 4% of the hydroelectricity production worldwide. Annual electricity generation is 16.5 billion kWh, making Tajikistan is the number 3 in hydropower potential, after the USA and Russia.

East Water Fights Drought Crisis

WATER COMPLEX Efficient Water Management Drought crisis and water shortage has become the issue as the problems that created repercussion on consumption, agriculture, livestock, and industry – which affected directly and indirectly to people’s everyday life and the country’s economy. Agencies are seeking solutions for the drought crisis.

According to the statistics of using water in the Chao Phraya River basin, the use of water has increased in all sectors; agricultural, industrial, business operator, and household. The use of water of all sectors combined reached 20 million cubic meters per day. In Bangkok alone, the use of water reached 5 million cubic meters a day. In the past months, the government has encouraged farmers to switch their multi-crop plants to drought-tolerant plants, to consume less amount of water. However, general water consumers should also be responsible for the water-saving and know how to consume water responsibly.

Water Complex, derived from 3W model, is a turn-key water management system which is suitable for all types of industry. The water can be treated and reused. East Water, as an expert in water management in the Eastern region, is confident the project will be a solution to fight drought crisis.

“Water Complex” isn’t limited to the waste water from the industry, but can also be used in household system.

The reclaimed system will divide water into two parts; clean water and waste water, which the latter can be brought back for treatment. The treated water, from toilet, will be reused in flushing system and plant watering. It is expected to bring back over 800 million cubic meters of water to the system per year if the water complex system is installed in each house. The household’s reclaimed water combined with that from the industry will be higher than 900 million cubic meters, or larger than the amount of water stored in Pa Sak Jolasid Dam. That means we will not need to build more dams or damage more natural resources, and subsequently lose more agricultural lands.

Most importantly, it will also end the fights over water usage between the agricultural and consumer sectors.

East Water Encourages Efficient Use of Water is brought up to raise awareness in water consumption, to encourage everyone to use water efficiently and everyone be aware of water resources being destroyed by pollution.

This year, Thailand has been severely affected by drought crisis and delayed rains, as well as the decreasing natural water resources that contradicting the growth of agricultural sector and urban demand.

Defensive stock is a stock that provides a constant dividend, but usually lower than market price. The income of the businesses are from the utility industry, which is a good example of defensive stocks because during all phases of the business cycle, people need the utility products. Back in 1990, Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of newlyformed National League for Democracy (NLD) won a landslide victory in the election in 1990. However, the result was nullified; Suu Kyi was also detained under house arrest for 15 years.

Myanmar recently made the media headline around the world when it has sworn-in Htin Kyaw, 69 years old, as the country’s first civilian president in 50 years. he won 360 out of 652 votes.

The road to democracy in Myanmar, however, has become brighter, despite the fact that Suu Kyi has been barred from presidency due to the constitutional law which bans a Myanmar national marrying a foreigner or having children of foreign nationality. Suu Kyi married Michael Aris in 1972 and had two sons, who hold British nationality. Htin Kyaw, Suu Kyi’s old time friend and close aide, has therefore become her choice.

IDEO has recently innovated “Aquaduct Vehicle” that won “Innovate or Die” contest, which was organized by Google and Specialized, in 2008. The innovation aimed to deal with the challenge–water shortage.

Access to a source of clean water is, therefore, a worrisome factor. According to Unicef, an estimated 768 million people can not access to clean water source, causing hundreds of thousands of children sicken and die each year. Especially, the people who live in remote rural areas or urban slums.

The Aquaduct Vehicle is designed to enable a person to sanitize and transport water simultaneously. The Aquaduct is a pedal-powered concept vehicle that transports, filters, and stores water for consumption.

The vehicle - which was invented for African countries and has now been tested in Pathum Thani province - will be an important step for everyone to be able to access clean water sources for consumption. The innovation will also help WHO to reduce the health problem.

East Water to Help Thais Fight Drought Crisis

East Water Delivering Drinking Water… Fighting Drought

Due to drought crisis in many areas in Thailand, the Royal Irrigation Department has announced there will be enough water for consumption until July.

East Water has, therefore, launched a campaign to reduce the use of water within East Water Building by 20%. The campaign is a result of a seminar called “Water shortage can be defeated by the determination of the Thai people”, held by the National Defence College of Thailand Class 2007.

The seminar saw experts in water management field, including Team Consulting, East Water, Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, and Thai Tap Water Supply Plc, to seek a solution to solve the water crisis.

East Water recently worked with Universal Utilities to deliver water for consumption to residents in many areas in Chachoengsao including Song Klong Tambon Administrative Organization, Saladaeng Tambon Administrative Organization, Hom Sin Tambon Administrative Organization, Pimpa Tambon Administrative Organization, and Bang Phra Tambon Administrative Organization, to ease the drought situation.

East Water Collaborates with two Water Agencies, to Cope with Drought Crisis. Water is guaranteed in Eastern Seaboard

East Water in collaboration with the Rayong branch of Royal Irrigation Department and Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand held a press conference on how to cope with drought crisis and to build confidence among the operators in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate. During the event, members of the media also joined the open house event, to study the water management by SCADA technology, as well as visited the Nong Pla Lai reservoir – the main water retention in Rayong province. The group also visited the construction site of water pipeline that will transfer water from Nong Pla Lai to Nong Kor 2, to enhance the water distribution system in Pluak Daeng – Bor Win areas. The project expects to be completed in April.

World Water Day on March 22 East Water recently participated in the conserve national water resource and world water day week 2016. Held by the Department of Water Resources, the event aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of water resources. Natural Resource and Environment Minister Surasak Kanjanarat was presiding over the opening ceremony. The theme of this year, “Water and Jobs” has been launched by

UN Water, to strengthen the relationship between the water and jobs of the people. A booth by East Water featured an exhibition of water grid, a type of sustainable water management with 3W model. The company also announced onstage its determination to help save the water.

East Water Holds Seminar for Water Consumers in all Areas The Operation and Customer Services Department held a seminar, “The examination and prevention of mass propagation of Algae Bloom”, for the water consumers and employees from related departments. Somsak Passananon, chief of production and distribution division, Bang Khen Water Treatment Plant, Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, was the lecturer on the topic, held at the Auditorium of RIL Industrial Estate. The seminar drew over 60 participants including consumers and employees.
