OUR MISSION & HISTORY

In 1969, the late Bruce McCarty, FAIA, then-President of the local AIA, alongside several local architects, returned from a trip to the community design center in Philadelphia and gathered roughly forty local professionals to discuss the need for such a center in this region. On April 15th, 1970, the East Tennessee Community Design Center (ETCDC) was founded. The objective of ETCDC has been to make East Tennessee a better place by bringing professional design and planning assistance to communities and organizations lacking resources to acquire those services. Our mission is to Envision, Inspire, and Improve East Tennessee communities through design, collaboration, and leadership. The ETCDC also serves as a catalyst to initiate projects within our service area and serves as an advocate for quality design in the public realm. The ETCDC offers these services through the pro-bono contributions of area architects, landscape architects, planners, engineers, and other professionals. Since its founding, the ETCDC has completed over 1,200 projects in the 16 county region it serves!

WHO WE SERVE We serve a 16 county region within East Tennessee. The star is Knoxville. The counties we serve, seen in blue, include:

• • • •

Welcome

Where does the time go? After a very eventful and - as we all experienced - endlessly slow 2020, 2021 has gone by in a flash. While still dealing with the ongoing pandemic, the East Tennessee Community Design Center has been working hard to help communities and groups of all sizes throughout the region by offering our design and planning services thanks to our countless volunteers and people like you. We have had to reimagine many things for the last eighteen months (we’ve had more virtual meetings than we ever thought we would!) but this has allowed us to use our creativity in new ways. An example of this is our ‘Behind the Design’ video series, an educational tool that can reach thousands of people online in a way that a physical seminar or meeting could not. Another thing we reimagined was this very booklet. This year our annual project booklet is special in that it features projects from two years instead of one. 2020 was our 50th anniversary and saw the production of our 50 Year booklet, which highlighted one project from every year since our founding in 1970. So to keep you up to date with our most recent projects, in the following pages you’ll see a brief overview of a few of our projects from 2020, as well as our projects and events from this year. We hope it inspires you to continue to partner with us in order to make our home a better place by design! -The ETCDC Staff

Events

The ETCDC and its volunteers also participate in various events throughout Knoxville, Knox County, and the region. Some of these are one-time events and some are recurring. We are also involved in various ongoing local committees in Knoxville. Some of these events and involvements include: • • • • • •

Community Collaborative Celebration at Lakeshore Park Parking Day 2021 Facade Review Committee Downtown Review Board Bike Walk Knoxville Advisory Committee

41

PARKING DAY PARK(ing) Day is an international event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks or parklets. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (all operating independently of Rebar) creating new forms of public space in communities around the world.

THE COMMUNITY COLLABORATIVE

The Community Collaborative is a focused effort between multiple organizations on the challenges facing our communities. The goal of the Collaborative is to highlight an area’s history, bring awareness to its future potential, and then promote sustainable growth. Each year a focus area or issue is established, community input is gathered, and multiple studies and efforts are performed. The collaborative concludes each year in a public event and a publication that summarizes the research, designs, concepts, and efforts performed that year. This discourse in turn begins to shape public policy and private development strategies. The Collaborative is the vehicle for our community to envision the possibilities of our region and shape our collective aspirations for the future.

CELEBRATION AT LAKESHORE PARK In August 2021, the ETCDC was able to host an in-person event, “Celebration at Lakeshore Park”, which was held at Lakeshore’s Marble Hall pavilion with a tent set up for social distancing. We had over 400 people attend, which made it one of our largest events to date. We honored Thomas N. McAdams, Esq. who was instrumental in several important projects in Knox County including the development of Lakeshore Park. One of the speakers was John Ridenour, a registered landscape architect with Nelson Byrd Woltz and is responsible for managing the planning process and design for the park’s ongoing improvements. We also honored ETCDC clients, CareCuts, who provide services to assist the homeless and are redeveloping a blighted site in downtown Knoxville, with the Annette Anderson Directors Award.
