Verhalen uit Monbulk , Dandenongs Berlicum en Middelrode. Maria werkte in Nederland bij een lokale busmaatschappij. Toen zij met Marinu troude, nam zij ontslag. Bij hun aankomst in Austalie wereden zij opgewacht door Marinus broer Wim en diens vrouw Ann. Wim en Ann waren vijf maanden eerder naar Australie geemigreerd. Wim regelde een woonplek voor Marinus en zijn gezin en vond ook werk voor hem in Monbulk. Mrinus en zijn gezin voelden zich er al snel thuis.
Ja en daar gaan we dan. We hebben wat verhalen van de tentoonstelling in de Dandenongs. Er is nu ook een boek uit en de boeklaunch was de tweede in diezelfde plek waar ook de tentoonstelling hangt. Het eerste verhaal is het vehaal van de familie Bissels Het verhaal wordt in de tentoonstelling in het Engels verteld, maar ik vertel het graag in het Nederlands. Familie Bissels Marinus Bissels werd in 1924 geboren in Berlicum, Nederland. maria van de Ven werd in 1928 geboren in Veghel, Nederland. Zij trouwden in 1952. De tijd na de tweede wereldoorlog was zwaar. Daarom besloten zij het avontuur aan te gaan en een nieuw leven op te bouwen in Australie. In Dedemer 1953 vertrokken zijn vauit Nederland aan
boord van de MS Johna van Oldenbarnevelt. De reis voerde hern door de Middelandse zee en de rode zee, via Perth naar Melbourne, waar zijn op 5 februari 1954 aankwamen. “Het was een geweldige reis” Samen kregen zij vier kinderen. Elly werd in Nederland geboren. Gerard, Toney en Peter (oerleden) wereden in Australie geboren. In Nederland werkte Marinus bij de gemeente. In 1943, op 19-jarige leeftijd, werd hij krijgsgevangenee en naar een concetratiekamp in Duuitsland gebracht. Enkele dagen later werd hij uit het kamp gehaald en moest hij zorgen voor het gezin en de boederderijk van een Duitse offficier, waar hij groenten verbouwde. Toen de oorlog voorbij was , was hij vrij om te vertrekken. Hij liep te voet terug naar Nederland. Tijdens zijn afwezigheid wist zijn familie niet of hij nog leefde of was overleden. Na zijn terugkeer ging hij weer bij de gemeente werken en hielp hij mee aan de wderopbouw van
Marinu ging werken bij de Victorian Railways in Croydon, maar zijn grote wens was om boer te worden. Daarom werkte hij enkle jaren op een boerderij in Silvan. Maria werkte als invalkracht in de jamfabriek van Monbul en besteedde daarnaast het grootste deel van haar tijd aan de opvoeding van de kinderen.

In 1965 kregen Marinus en Maria de kans om hun eigen boerderij in Silvan te kopen. Zij verbouwden groetnen en bloemen en bleven maar liefst 51 jaar eigenaar van het bedrijf. Zij waren succesvol en genotenvolop van de kansen en de vrijheid die Australie bood. Maria overleed in 2000 en Marinus in 2016. Marinus en Maria kwamen op 5 februari 1954 aan in Melbourne met de MS Johna van Oldenbarnevlet. Op de kade zwaaiden zijn naar Wim, de broer van Marinus, die hen daar opwachtte. Elly Mertens Bissels)

Recept uit Groningen : Poffert
Perth Radio Program stopt

Beginnend in 1975. Toen werd er in Perth een ‘Ethnic Radio Steering Committee’ opgericht met als doel om etnische radio-uitzendingen te realiser en op een permanente basis.
Ingrediënten 500 g bloem 10 g droge gist (of 25 g verse gist) 300 ml lauwwarme melk 2 eieren 50 g gesmolten boter 50 g suiker ½ theelepel zout 150 g rozijnen (optioneel, vooraf geweekt) Boter om de vorm in te vetten Bereiding Los de gist op in de lauwwarme melk. Meng bloem, suiker en zout in een grote kom. Voeg de melk met gist, eieren en gesmolten boter toe. Kneed of mix het beslag tot een soepel, dik deeg. Schep eventueel de rozijnen erdoor. Dek af en laat ongeveer 1 uur rijzen, tot het deeg in volume
is verdubbeld. Vet een poffertvorm of tulbandvorm goed in en schep het deeg erin (vul de vorm Tip: In Groningen wordt voor ongeveer twee derde). Laat nog 30 minuten narijzen. poffert vaak de volgende dag in plakken gesneden en in Stoom de poffert ongeveer boter goudbruin gebakken. 1½ uur. Een van de groepen die hieruit voorkwam was de “Multicultural Radio and Television Association (MRTA)”. Dutch Community Radio is lid van MRTA vanaf het begin. Sinds dat moment is de Dutch Community Radio uitgegroeid tot een succesverhaal, een professioneel radio-gebeuren met uitsluitend vrijwilligers aan de helm. Maar nu een-en-vijftig jaar zijn er nog maar twee vrijwilligers, die beiden ook nog wel andere dingen willen doen dan radiomaken. Dus, ... 30 Augustus en dan houdt de koek op. We hebben altijd met plezier programmas naar de luisteraars gebracht, en dat doen we nog steeds. Toch is het goed om nu te stoppen.

Celebrating 35 years Euro Fest Choir.
Many visitors ask us: “Why is there a Dutch museum in Foxton?” One obvious reason is that this is one of a very few places in the world – outside the Netherlands – were you can find a Dutch Stellingmolen, built to a 17th century design. De Molen grinds flour, the way it was traditionally done for many hundreds of years. And it’s quite an experience to climb up the narrow stairs and see solid wooden wheels grip each other and turn the mill stones, as the machinery creaks in the wind. But there were plenty of other reasons to choose Foxton for a national Dutch museum. The town is situated on the Manawatu River Loop, with wetlands and birdlife reminiscent of a Dutch polder landschap. Willows line the river where the eels or paling swim. Friesian cows moo in the grassy paddocks in the distance. And bicycle paths stretch along the roads to Foxton Beach – where the sea, de duinen en de wind, make it easy to imagine you could be at the other side of the world in a flat country on the North Sea. Plus Foxton has a sizable Dutch population, the Manawatu Dutch Club, a Reformed Church, and a Dutch café: Café De Molen – Daar bij die Molen… Love a touch of Dutch? Come and check it out!
Celebrating 35 years Euro Fest Choir, officially started in 1991 after the very successful EuroMusic Fest on 10th November 1990. Organised by the German Friendship Society. European culture of German, Dutch, Italian Austrian was abound in the form of music, song, dance and European delicacies to enjoy with various drinks. The choir became involved in 1991 in the Historic Golden Journey, which was a three hour production in the Capital Theatre, telling the story of gold through the many migrants of the 19th Century. In acts and music. At the Capital Theatre we performed with many ensem-
bles in February 1992 to raise money for Val Broad’s Children choir.. We also performed for the 100th Anniversary of Anzac and on several occa- sions with Melbourne German Ensembles. In 2024 we created an official recording of Back To Bendigo for the Historical Society. We were part of the anniversary of Dr Backhaus at St. Kilians For many years we were part of the cultural performances in Rosalind Park and in the Myer Place in front of the old Post Office till 2016.. Duldig Studio Museum in Malvern

Cristina and I met Eva one Sunday afternoon while walking in our neighbourhood parks. It was a snow white woolly dog that first caught our attention and we stopped for a cuddle and a chat about this remarkable dog. Its owner, a bright-eyed woman with a charismatic smile first gave details about the dog and then the conversation turned to ourselves. All three of us were migrants and surprise surprise there was a Dutch connection. That immediately leads to more talk, especially on a bright day when the dull Melbourne winter can turn to sunny spring. She was a widow, born in pre-war Austria, having married a Dutchman and having been a tennis player in Holland at high level, reaching the quarter finals and, had played those in Eindhoven, my birthplace. We asked Eva if she was aware of the Dutch Club, and she knew about it but had never been in there because it was always closed when she passed it, exactly the reason why I myself had not been inside the club until half a decade ago. After the recent changes of the Club when it changed its constitution, and its name from ‘The Abel Tasman Club’ to ‘The Netherlands Society’ it became a charitable institution and it instituted a monthly ‘Community Morning Tea’ at $5 for members and with free entry to pensioners, health care and concession card holders, including one carer. The event offers Dutch snacks, sandwiches, coffee and tea. Cristina suggested that we took Eva’s email address so that we could send her an invitation. But there was more to Eva than a Dutch connection. She had a family story that was absolutely extraordinary. Her parents were both recognised artists who lived in the Vienna of the 1920’s up to 1939. Eva’s mother had invented the folding umbrella, which gave the family a good income. The family left Vienna in 1939, after it had become part of Nazi Germany the year before. Her mother sold the patents that she had in various countries before they escaped to Singapore, where they had a connection, and stayed there and worked as artists and teachers until 1940, when World War 2 broke out and they became enemy aliens. They were arrested and transported to Australia where they were interned in a camp in Tatura, close to Shepparton. Later they were freed, when Australia needed every man to help in the war. They settled in Melbourne and continued their life as artists. The family was very lucky to get out of Vienna as late as 1939, and again to leave Singapore for Australia before the city was taken by the Japanese on 15 February 1942. But what was really is incredible, given the times in which it happened is the story of their possessions, from the full contents of their Vienna apartment, which made their way to Melbourne, to the tons of sculptures from their studio, which arrived later. The story is best told by a visit to the house on 92 Malvern East where Eva’s parents lived and had their studio, after the war, which is open to the public as ‘Duldig Studio Museum + Sculpture Garden’ where the furniture and the artworks are displayed, including those that were created in Singapore. An old man’s experience of Oh what a night! I thought I was going to see a great musical. I came away with so much more. Middle Raged was an outstanding performance by everyone involved. The music, the voices, the humour and the storytelling were simply brilliant. As an old man, it was a real eye opener. I never truly realised just how many disadvantages and challenges women have had to face throughout their lives. It was a huge learning curve for me, and I found myself feeling genuinely sorry for what so many women have had to endure. Most of the evening I sat there with tears in my eyes. I was deeply touched by the honesty, courage and humour with which these stories were told. Call me sentimental but the show made me laugh, reflect and appreciate the incredible resilience of women in a whole new way. Congratulations to the entire cast and everyone behind this remarkable production. Middle Raged is not just entertainment, it opens hearts and minds. Every man should go and see it. Hans van de Zandt Dit stond op Dutch heritage : geschreven door Harm . Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog kampte Nederland met enorme woningnood, bevolkingsgroei en beperkte werkgelegenheid. De regering zag emigratie naar landen als Canada, Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland daarom als een oplossing. De Nederlandse overheid stimuleerde en begeleidde die emigratie actief. Tussen 1946 en 1960 vertrokken honderdduizenden Nederlanders naar het buitenland. Voor veel gezinnen betekende dat: Nederland verlaten, elders een toekomst opbouwen en daar kinderen en kleinkinderen krijgen. Ze namen hun Nederlandse namen, gewoonten, verhalen en identiteit mee. Maar tientallen jaren later ontstaat een wrange situatie. Voor sommige nakomelingen blijkt hun Nederlandse afkomst juridisch niet genoeg om Nederlander te zijn of te blijven. Het Nederlanderschap kan onder bepaalde omstandigheden verloren gaan en het opnieuw verkrijgen ervan is aan regels en procedures gebonden. Daar zit een bijzondere historische tegenstelling in. Nederland zei destijds: er is hier te weinig ruimte en te weinig toekomst. Ga elders een bestaan opbouwen. En jaren later kan dezelfde familie te horen krijgen: Je bent weggegaan. Bewijs nu maar dat je nog Nederlander bent. Natuurlijk is nationaliteit een juridische status en zijn er goede redenen om daar regels aan te verbinden. Maar achter die regels zitten ook families die ooit vertrokken binnen een emigratiebeleid dat door Nederland zelf actief werd gestimuleerd. Een paspoort kan verlopen. Een nationaliteit kan juridisch verloren gaan. Maar een familiegeschiedenis verdwijnt niet zomaar . Harm

We have probably all seen the heartbreaking images of the terrible flooding in Nepal. Among those caught in this tragedy was a pilgrimage group part of Sadhguru, the Indian yogi and spiritual teacher. Sadhguru has since made a statement about the group, explaining that they were most likely at the building shown in the news at the time the flood struck. According to his statement, the group leader sent him a message at 9.05am saying that they had arrived at the building. Just ten minutes later, at 9.15am, the devastating flood hit. The group included 10 Australians and two Dutch nationals, alongside people of many oth-er nationalities. For their families and loved ones, the uncertainty and loss must be unimaginable. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragedy, and especially to those waiting for news or grieving the loss of someone they love. My mother decides to fill my grandparents rooms with two boarders. My sister is in my room and I sleep in the little room on the second landing opposite the one with the large basin. A woman called Greet moves in, she is about the same age as my mother. She wears her blond reddish hair in a plait around her head. She is not married and I can’t ever recall exchanging a word with her. They eat breakfast and dinner with us. Greet is a scientist and every morning my father and she leave home at the same time until my mother puts a stop to it after throwing a jealous tantrum. The other boarder is Walter Becht who works in a bookshop and is an artist at home. The second landing now constantly smells of turps. My parents are friends with Walter. He has lots of books on art which he lets me look at. He paints mainly flowers. Walter is probably the same age as my father. I’m about eleven when Walter tells me that I hold my head like Ingrid Bergman and he would like to paint me without clothes on. He adds that it means nothing and he would ask his own mother. When I
tell my mother she snaps, ‘No, you can’t and let him ask his mother.’ When I’m ten we have a health check at school. I seem to have a spot on my lungs, am underweight and have to go to a health colony in the country for six weeks. I remember arriving at an enormous country house set in beautiful bush surroundings. We had to exercise, breathe deeply and were not allowed to eat and drink at the same time nor go to the toilet during meals. A girl at our table asked if she could go and was refused which resulted in wetting her pants at the table. After dinner in the evening we sang Ave Maria which I loved. Maybe other songs as well but I don’t remember. Every day the post would be distributed. One girl who was from Rotterdam received a card every day. I received none not even a letter but half way during that time my parents came to visit and brought a bag of chocolates which were long and thin and called cats tongues. The nurse in charge of my group had laundry duty once a week and we had to stay in there with her. The smell of soap probably lysol or some
other chemical washing agent gave me a headache which when I complained no one believed. My darling grandfather dies at 79 years. I can’t understand why people are cheerful at his wake. After that my father starts to inquire about immigrating to Canada, America and Australia.

Ze zat in een ander team, maar verbond zich met iedereen die zich met haar Jan had verbonden. Figuurlijk en letterlijk. Want Addie reed rond op haar fiets met mandje voorop en dat mandje zat vol met alles wat EHBO-er nodig kon hebben. In verbinden was zij dus heel goed! Nadat zij op een beurs in Utrecht in 2003 zagen hoe de rollen knal oranje vloerbedekking werden losgesneden en weggegooid, konden Jan en Addie het niet laten om een grote rol los te peuteren van de medewerkers, om in de trein mee naar huis te nemen. Voor de kinderopvang op de Jamborette, zeiden zij met een glimlach! Zie je het voor je, hoe ze daar de trein instapten? Die lange, enigszins kromme Jan en die kleine, grijze Addie, met die enorme rol tapijt? In 2007 wilde Addie hun
tentje niet opzetten bij al die “oude” mensen van het clubje waar zij eigenlijk bij hoorden. Ze zette haar tent bij ons in Sesamstraat; daar waar de gezinnen met jonge kinderen stonden. Vanaf dat moment werden zij en Jan de extra opa en oma van onze kinderen. Jongste dochter Brecht vertelde dat ze jaren later Addie eens zag bij een activiteit van haar eigen scoutinggroep: “Kijk, daar is oma Addie!” Toen haar leiding vroeg hoe dat precies zat, kon ze het niet goed uitleggen. Addie was gewoon haar oma. Het was iedere Jambo weer een mooi moment om alles wat er nog bij hen op zolder lag nog een keertje te testen. Unieke tenten, die als een paraplu werden opgezet, gerepareerd met tape, zagen wij voor onze ogen verpulveren van ouderdom. Rolletjes verbandtape werden getest op plakvermogen, maar knisperden zoals oude sokken, waar de rek voor altijd uit is. Tot en met onze laatste keer Jamborette, in 2019, zag ik ze nog iedere dag actief bezig zijn met allerlei klusjes. Stonden

De kaart van het leven Er zijn van die mensen, die waren er altijd al. Van die mensen waarvan je eigenlijk niet meer weet wanneer ze je leven in kwamen stappen. Je hebt een vaag idee over wanneer ze er op zeker nog niet waren, maar een concrete ontmoeting, een kennismaking, die weet je niet meer. Zo was het ook met Addie. Addie was de vrouw van Jan. En van Jan weet ik toevallig wél precies wat onze eerste ontmoeting was. In 1999, mijn eerste Jamborette (een groot, internationaal scoutingkamp in onze regio) als medewerker, kon ik pas op het laatste moment aansluiten bij de opbouw. Eppoh was wel al bezig geweest en kwam mij ophalen. Ik stond wat onwennig in een groep mensen die ik nauwelijks kende. Mijn lange blonde haren had ik, zoals gewoonlijk, in 2 vlechten vastgemaakt. In mijn nog schone, rode jambo-shirt en mijn rood geruite Doc’s, probeerde ik nonchalant over te komen. Plotseling stond er

ze mee te helpen bij fourage, zaten we fruit schoon te maken in het restaurant, was ze overal en nergens betrokken en druk. En ook de evenementen daarna werkte ze nog net zo hard. Nadat ik een mega aanvaring had met een buitengewoon onaangenaam persoon, midden in het restaurant (dat overkwam mij overigens wel vaker daar, besef ik nu!), stak zij mij weer een hart onder de riem, zorgde dat ik kon relativeren zonder hyperventileren. Laconiek en betrokken. We zagen Addie wel eens langs ons huis fietsen. Heel langzaam. Ik was altijd bang dat ze zou omvallen. En sprak je haar, dan hoorde je hoe kortademig ze was. Maar iedere keer kwam ik haar toch weer ergens tegen. Stralend aan het werk bij een rommelmarkt, liefdevol mijn hand knijpend bij een uitvaart. De laatste jaren zijn er al wat bijzondere mensen ons ontvallen. De markante mensen scoutingmensen van onze regio, die het hart hebben gevormd van al die activiteiten die nu nog steeds bestaan en
dat ook zullen blijven doen. Zij vormden de verbinding tussen waar mijn opa in 1937 in Vogelzang mee bezig was, het ontstaan van de Jamborette en scouting als grootste jeugden jongerenorganisatie van Nederland, waar ook voor de toekomst nog steeds een plek zal zijn. De pioniers van toen, waren nog net zo betrokken met wat er nu te beleven valt. Het kan niet anders dan dat daarom deze mensen zo jong van geest zijn gebleven. Aan Addie kon je zien dat ze geleefd had. Haar lieve, zachte gezicht, zat vol met lijntjes. Als een geografische kaart, waarop alle wegen die zij in haar leven heeft bewandeld, waren vastgelegd. Nu heeft ze die kaart niet meer nodig; ze weet de route. She’s gone home.... Dag lieve oma Addie

Yoga met kinderen: van kat tot krokodil Heel veel yogahoudingen hebben namen die te maken hebben met dieren of de natuur. En juist daarom is yoga zo leuk om samen met kleine kinderen te doen. Je hoeft het niet meteen heel serieus te maken. Een kind kan zich inleven in een dier, een berg of een boom. Ineens ben je niet zomaar aan het rekken en strekken, maar word je een giraffe, een kat of een krokodil. “Stretch jezelf zo lang als een giraffe!” Dat is een cue die een kind waarschijnlijk veel beter begrijpt dan: “Strek je armen zo ver mogelijk omhoog.”

Hoorn and put his son Jacob in charge of trading during the expedition. The very experienced VOC ship master Willem Schouten of Hoorn, Holland, would be the skipper of the Eendracht and his brother Jan Schouten would be the skipper of the Hoorn. Also Willem held equal shares, in the new rival company, with Isaac Le Maire. (This would have probably tipped the
Jacob le Maire and Willem Schouten sailed from Texel in the United Provinces. In December 1615, they stopped in Port Desire for repairs, where the Hoorn was lost in a fire, although with no loss of life, in a bungled cleaning/burning attempt of the hull, as recorded in Schouten’s journal. (Port Desire is now known as Puerto Deseado, Argentina) This refuge, along the Deseado River was named, after his ship, by a 16th century English circumnavigator called Thomas Cavendish. (Quite a swashbuckler was Thomas, being the first to deliberately try to copy Sir Francis Drake, by raiding the Spanish towns and ships in the Pacific and
scales for Schouten to agree to leave the VOC). The main purpose of the voyage was to search for Terra Australis *Footnote, which had eluded them. This was because, although Willem Janszoon had discovered it in 1606, the Dutch thought that he had just discovered another part of New Guinea. But as stated before; their primary objective was to evade the trade restrictions of the VOC. On 14 June 1615

The other Eendracht: First voyage around Cape Horn: BY MONICA de KNECHT Dirk Hartog set sail in January 1616, aboard the 700 tonne East Indiaman, Eendracht, in the service of the VOC. He made the second recorded landfall by a Dutchman on Australian soil in October 1616. A little earlier, in 1615, Jacob Le Maire and Willem Corneliszoon Schouten, Master Mariner, sailed in a 360 tonne ship also named the Eendracht. However, not for the VOC’s enrichment, but their own. Jacob Le Maire was a Dutch mariner, born in Amsterdam. He was one of 22 children of Maria Walraven of Antwerp and Isaac Le Maire of Tournai. Isaac was already a prosperous merchant in Antwerp. Isaac and Maria married shortly before the Spanish siege of Antwerp in 1585, after which they fled to Amsterdam. Jacob was the eldest son, born in the same year. Isaac was very successful in Amsterdam, becoming one of the founders of the Dutch East India company. However, in 1605, he had a dispute with the Heeren XVll and tried as hard as he could to break the VOC’s monopoly in trade to the East Indies. By 1615 Isaac had established a new company, the Australisch Compagnie (English translation Australian Company); with the goal to finding a new route to the Pacific and the Spice Islands, thereby evading the restrictions of the VOC. He contributed to the outfitting of two ships, the Eendracht and

birds and they found good drinking water to carry back to the ship. Also other amazing discoveries detailed in Schouten’s Diarium veldescriptio laboriosissimi & molestissimi itineris (Amsterdam 1619); such as the burial site of a giant, whose bones measured between ten and eleven feet long; beasts which looked like deer, but with longer necks (guanacos) on the mountains and ostrich like birds. On 29 January 1616 they rounded Cape Horn, which they named for the ill-fated Hoorn; Hoorn also being Schouten’s birthplace. After failing to moor at the Juan Fernández Islands in early March, the ship crossed the Pacific in a fairly straight line, visiting several of the Tuamotus. Between 21 and 24 April 1616 they were the first Westerners to visit the Tonga, then known as the Northern islands: “Cocos Island” (Tafahi), Traitors Island” (Niuatoputapu), and “Island of Good Hope” (Niuafo’ou). On 28 April they discovered the Hoorn Islands (Futuna and Alofi); where they were very well received and stayed until 12 May. They then followed the north coasts of New Ireland and New Guinea and visited adjacent islands, including, on 24 July, what became known as the Schouten Islands. The strait between Tierra del Fuego and Isla de los Estados was named the Le Maire Strait, but not without some disagreement. Le Maire, himself had suggested it be named after him-
self and the Council aboard the ship, unanimously, agreed with him. The author or authors of Schouten’s Journal took Captain Schouten’s side by proclaiming: ( the following is the old English translation, ) …..our men had each of them three cups of wine in signe (sic) of ioy (sic) for our good happiness and the naming of the Straights (sic) of Le Maire, although by good right it should rather have been called Willem Schouten Straight (sic.) after our Master’s name, by whose wise conduction and skill in sayling (sic), the same. was found. The Eendracht then rounded Cape Horn, proving that Tierra del Fuego was not a continent, but an archipelago. They reached the Northern Moluccas in August and finally, Ternate, then the headquarters of the VOC, on 12 September 1616. It is here they were most enthusiastically welcomed by GovernorGeneral Laurens Reael, Admiral Steven Verhagen and the Governor of Ambon, Jasper Jansz. [Remember in my article (VOCHS newsletter in March), that Reael lost his post because of quarrelling with the VOC about its harshness and also because he was welcoming men who had infringed the VOC’s monopoly on trading in the Spice Islands.] The Eendracht then sailed on to Java and reached Batavia on 28th October, with a remarkable 84 of the original 87 crew members of both ships on board. Jan Pieterszoon Coen had Le Maire and Schouten arrested and their ship confiscated by the VOC. Coen, later was the instigator of the Massacre of Amboina, (now Maluku, Indonesia) in 1623, where Englishmen from the British East India Company and natives were horribly tortured and executed for trading with the local people and falsely accused of treason, by agents of the Dutch East India Company. This rankled sorely with the British and ignited the Anglo-Dutch wars until late in the 17th century; to my mind, possibly even the 18th century, as Sir Robert Clive of India, a soldier of fortune, attached to the British East India Company; alluded to it, when referring to the Dutch in the battle of Chinsurah, 25 November 1759, during the Seven Years War between a force of British troops mainly of the British East India Company and a force of the Dutch East India Company. (British Archives) It may be said that Jan Pieterszoon Coen was an able and clever trading ‘power house’, but his cruelty and ruthlessness cost many more lives, in the long run, than the ill-starred traders of the British East India Company. After they were released they returned from Batavia to Amsterdam in the company of Joris van Spilbergen, who was circumnavigating the earth himself, but by the traditional
Strait of Magellan. Le Maire was aboard the ship Amsterdam on this journey home, but died en route. Van Spilbergen was at his deathbed and took Le Maire’s report of his trip, which he included in his book Mirror of the East and West Indies. The rest of the crew arrived in the Netherlands on 1 July 1617, two years and 17 days after they departed. Schouten described his travels in the Journal, published in a Dutch edition at Amsterdam in 1618 and soon translated into several other languages. On his return he would sail again for the VOC, and on one of these trips he died off the coast of Madagascar in 1625. Jacob’s father, Isaac, angrily challenged the confiscation of his ship, but it took him until 1622, where a court, at last, ruled in his favour. He was awarded 64,000 pounds and was able to retrieve his son’s diaries, which he then published as well. Unfortunately, by this time, the Dutch West Indies Company claimed the same waters. Therefore one of the founding fathers of the Dutch East India Company, succeeded after all those years in stymieing the VOC, only to be thwarted by the more notorious trading arm of the Dutch. Resident return visa Ik woon hier in Australie met heel veel plezier. En normaal was er ook niet zoveel verschil voor mij persoonlijk of het nou links of rechtse politieke was en misschien interesseerde me het ook niet zo hier. Ook omdat we zowiezo niet kunnen stemmen heb ik daar ook nooit echt opgelet. Natuurlijk heb ik wel een krant de Dutch courier en als het Nederlanders trof heb ik zaken wel in de krant gezet. Maar nu is er opeens een 200 procent verhoging in ons resident return visa. Dat betekend dat de kosten opeens met 1000 dollar omhoog zijn gegaan, denk daar eens over na. Dit gebeurde zonder waarschuwing, dit gebeurde zonder consulting van de communities. Dit betekend dat bovenop de meer dan 2000 dollar vlucht per jaar er dus nu opeens 1000 dollar bijkomt. En de minister zegt; ach we willen nou eenmaal dat mensen kiezen voor citizen en dan is onze stem verstomt. want wij als Nederlander moeten dan inderdaad kiezen om onze nationaliteit te verliezen. En dan gewoon Australier worden, omdat we kiezen. Dit betekend bijvoorbeeld dat we niet langer dan 3 maanden in Nederland voor onze ouders kunnen zorgen. Kijk dat zijn nu nog geen onderwerpen misschien van nu, maar wel de zorgen dus voor morgen. Ook is het dus gewoon opeens een 200 procent verhoging dat echt opeens wordt verteld. Inderdaad zonder waarschuwing. Had het even een jaar geleden gemeldt.

Van droom naar SpiritLine
Van een droom naar SpiritLine – mijn reis van Nederland naar Australië Soms weet je diep van binnen dat een bepaalde plek bij je hoort. Toen ik 23 jaar was, reisde ik vier maanden alleen door Australië. Het voelde als thuiskomen. Al tijdens die reis wist ik dat ik hier ooit wilde wonen. Door persoonlijke omstandigheden bleef die droom jarenlang op de achtergrond, maar hij verdween nooit. Australië bleef aan me trekken. Jaren later besloot ik alsnog mijn hart te volgen en emigreerde ik naar Australië. Het voelde alsof een cirkel rond was. Creativiteit heeft altijd een belangrijke rol gespeeld in mijn leven. In Nederland bouwde ik een succesvol creatief bedrijf op en verzorgde ik door het hele land workshops en bedrijfsuitjes. Mensen konden bij mij terecht voor onder andere speksteen bewerken, mozaïeken, schilderen, portretten van klei, maskers maken en vele andere creatieve activiteiten. Ook nu, in Australië, geef ik weer workshops speksteen. Creativiteit blijft een belangrijk onderdeel van wie ik ben. Maar er is nog iets dat misschien nog dieper gaat. Door mijn eigen levenservaringen heb ik geleerd hoe belangrijk het is om mensen weer vertrouwen in zichzelf te
laten vinden. Soms hebben mensen maar één gesprek, één inzicht of één nieuwe richting nodig om weer verder te kunnen. Ik geloof er niet in om mensen afhankelijk te maken. Ik geloof juist in het versterken van hun eigen kracht. Two weeks before we were to leave Holland they moved in. My father went to stay with a cousin, my mother and my sister Selma went to my father’s parents and it had been arranged that I would remain in the old house with the new people. The small Indonesian woman whose name was Lotus made me clean the floors every day. I had never done that before. It must have been a nightmare for my parents. All we took was three suitcases and a trunk. I was allowed to take three books. All my other books were given away. My father had hundreds of books and they too must have been given away or sold. After the war my father had nightmares which lasted for years. His fear of another war and living as we did in a battered country, made immigration seem like a miracle. Years later I was told by an aunt that the people who left the
Netherlands were not highly regarded by the people left behind. ‘What was in the trunk, Mum?’ I asked when she was 90. Her mind stretched back to a couple of saucepans, blankets, linen and books. I know that she missed out on photos, different documents, a locket containing a snip of my grandfather’s hair, my plaits which were cut off just before we left. My sister’s first shoes and a tiny tuft of her baby hair which to this day is still tied up in a blue velvet ribbon. A wooden coffee grinder, a white enamel milk jug with MELK written on it, now showing bits of rust but which she still uses. I threw the last one of my three books out a few months ago. It was called ‘a book for the youth’ and I had loved it. Its yellowed pages falling apart, written in a language my children don’t speak. We boarded the ship in October 1950 in Rotterdam. My grandmother (my father’s mother), Rita, my father’s sister, my mother’s two brothers and wives saw us off. I remember yelling goodbye to them from the ship. It must have been in-
credibly sad for my parents and my grandmother at that time, thinking they would never see each other again. After the war ended (W W 2), Arthur Caldwell, Australian Minister for Immigration in the Chifley Labor Government promoted the policy of ‘Populate or Perish’. Bathurst became one of the major migrant reception centres in Australia. My father told us that we were going to Bathurst for a short time until we found our feet. My mother suffered from seasickness for most of the voyage. ‘De VOLENDAM’ was not a luxurious ship. In fact it was to be its last voyage. Women and men were segregated. We slept in a dormitory on a triple bunk. I loved the bathrooms, of which there seemed to be many, with deep baths and hot sea water. A lot of complaining went on among the Dutch. Mainly they whinged about the food. But my father said that the food was simple, good and enough, and people should be grateful. I can’t remember how I spent all those days on board. I remember going through the Suez canal
where on land two men lifted their long coats and showed us their bottoms. I remember dolphins and flying fish. I remember docking in Aden and being surrounded by what seemed hundreds of little boats trying to sell things. A lot of people bought leather poufs. When we finally arrived in Sydney there was a feeling of exhilaration. I remember going under the bridge to Darling Harbour where trains were waiting for us to board. We waited in a cavernous large station crammed with people. Different languages added to the chaos. My father struggled with suitcases while leading
my very nervous mother, sister and me to the train. But where was the trunk? He couldn’t have carried that and my mother doesn’t recall. My father was thirty-seven years old. A traveler in his youth, an adventurer and terrified of another war. The first five years in this country were difficult for him with disappointments and regrets. But on that old train to Bathurst, he was full of excitement about our new life. I remember him calling me outside to the little platform at the end of the carriage, leaving my mother and sister in their seats. Among all my wavering memories, that moment on the train is stuck in glue on my brain. Ignoring smoke and fumes he stretched his arms wide while he told me what a great country this was. He pointed out the vast areas covered with trees as that train chugged along. He told me that the trees stayed green all the year around, that we were in a land of milk and honey, a place where there were no wars, no hunger and no destruction. More next courier
THE FORMER DUTCH EAST INDIES - THE END OF AN ERA
Part 3 Meanwhile the month of August 1945 had arrived. Rumours were flying around from the outside working parties about invasions all over the South East Pacific and bombings of Japan. However, everyone was wary about all the rumours in these years till one day we saw a plane flying over, first pretty high and then lower and lower. Suddenly objects were thrown out of the plane and we recognised it as a PBY (patrol bomber) flying boat with Dutch markings. With that came the realisation that the Japanese had not fired at the planes and then sank in not the whole truth, but enough to start celebrating! The packages were special Red Cross packages full of medicines and special food. This was the reason I still have
my two legs: the then miracle drug, Sulfinilamide, did the trick and in a marvellously short time the infection had disappeared and the healing process gradually took over. The attitude of the guards changed completely and the Japanese camp commander called the camp leader and his interpreter in to tell them that the Japanese had surrendered and that he would assist the camp leader with everything within his power. It was amazing, the change in attitude of the Japanese, you might call it discipline. The camp was thrown open, people who had accommodation in the town of Bandoeng could go home; others could stay till they had made arrangements to contact their families, which now, we found out, had spread all over the province of Western Java. All the European women and kids had been placed in camps as well. So for a lot of men it took quite a while to arrange their affairs. Food had become edible again and then we heard that because there were not enough Allied troops available, the former Japanese Command got the responsibility for the safe~ of all Dutch people, men, women and chil-
dren. We could not believe our ears when we heard this news over the radios, which by this time, had appeared all over the camps and towns. We also heard messages that Soekarno (Indonesian spelling Sukarno) who had collaborated with the Japanese, had declared independence and that all the Indonesians who had served in the Imperial Japanese army in the Hei Ho, the Japanese- led and - instructed unarmed force, were to fight under his command. At that time we did not take too much notice of that declaration. We were still living in the aura of liberation and the concept of the old Dutch East Indies. We would find out in due course how wrong we were and what Soekarno’s declaration would mean to us. With the Japanese occupation finished, I like to make some observations. The Japanese invasion had ended, unbeknownst to us, the existence of the Dutch East Indies’ colonial era, with its culture and style of living. Thousands of people were thrown into an unknown future and as time went on, they had to choose between two strange nationalities, www.dutchcourier.com
Indonesian (Warga Negara) or Dutch, and live in Holland. The next couple of years would decide that for them. Also the next period in the country, the Bersiap period, would help them in making this decision. The Bersiap period was the time when the Indonesian Hei Ho’s got hold of Japanese weapons and started to murder the Dutch people and also those Indonesians, who according to them, were sympathisers with the Dutch command. We will say a few words later about this episode. LIBERATION AND THE BERSIAP PERIOD With the surrender of the Japanese Empire in August 1945, a political vacuum was created in the former Dutch East Indies. This was because at the last moment, the Allied Command decided to change the command of the Indies from American Pacific to the British Far Eastern commander, General Christian. It was a well- known fact that a great shortage of Allied troops existed in this war zone. They had their hands full holding the Japanese troops outside former British India. Directly after the Japanese surrender General Christian ordered the
immediate re-arming of all the Allied soldiers from the Japanese POW camps who were still fit enough to carry weapons, to bolster the number of troops under his command. It took quite a while to accomplish this fact as all the supplies had to be found. While all this was going on, the political vacuum in the Dutch East Indies started to develop. The Japanese troops were ordered to concentrate in certain areas to await surrender to The Allied Command. Because there were no immediate Allied Forces to accept the surrender, the vacuum deepened. It was at this time that Sukamo proclaimed the independence of Indonesia, the date was the 14th of August 1945. As a result the Indonesian youths who had had their training in the Japanese Hei Ho, started to try to collect Japanese weapons wherever possible. Luckily not too many weapons were collected, but enough to start the Bersiap (freely translated “Stand up and fight”) period. Handdoekleggers… Ik durf vrijwel zeker te stellen dat u meermaals dit woord heeft moeten lezen om te begrijpen wat er nu daadwerkelijk staat. Handdoekleggers……kennelijk betreft dit een nieuw Nederlands woord? Heeft u er al eens eerder van gehoord? Voordat ik vanuit mijn langdurig verblijf in de Caribbean weer remigreerde naar Europa was dit voor mij zeker een onbekend fenomeen, de handdoekenleggers. Ik had er nog nooit eerder van gehoord. Tijdens mijn ‘Europese afwezigheid’ en de vele bezoeken aan de lokale (ei-)landen in het Caribisch gebied heb ik dit nog niet eerder mogen ervaren, maar nadat wij weer eens op vakantie binnen Europa zijn geweest begrijp ik pas hoe groot dit fenomeen lijkt te zijn. Sterker nog, als ik goed ben geïnformeerd hebben jullie een soortgelijk probleem op de mooie stranden van Australië, maar dan vooral door de groter party- en schaduwtenten die massaal worden gebruikt. Kennelijk weer een wereldwijd fenomeen dus! En mocht u het nog niet begrijpen…dan hier een kort relaas van mijn eerste vakantiedag in een prachtige all-inclusief hotel op een van de vele mooie Griekse eilanden.
Kaliméra Al ruim voor zeven uur op de eerste ochtend van ons verblijf werd ik wakker, de heerlijke warme luchtstroom kwam door het openstaande deuren naar binnen en de zon kwam langzaam op vanuit een prachtig blauwe Egeïsche zee. Ideale omstandigheden dus voor een Hollandse koukleum die zich doorgaans prettiger voelt in een warmer klimaat. Het eenvoudige koffieapparaatje stond al te pruttelen en ik schoof de deur naar het terras verder open. Met een vers bakkie (jawel, ze hadden er echte Douwe Egberts koffie!) liep ik op blote voeten het betegelde terras op, met zicht naar de zee en in de verte waren zelfs Turkse eilanden zichtbaar. Bij de balustrade keek in naar beneden, waar het afgesloten zwembad er verlaten bij lag. Met grote pionnen en rood/ witte linten werd duidelijk dat het zwembad voor onderhoud voorlopig nog gesloten was. Ik had eerder al ergens gelezen dat deze pas om 10.00 uur zou openen dus voorlopig nog geen schreeuwende kinderen of enigszins ander geluidsoverlast op mijn eerste welverdiende vakantiedag. Rustig keek ik om mij heen, nam een slokje koffie en zag dat er al wat andere vakantiegangers rondliepen. En enkeling zelfs al met wat badhanddoeken onder de armen, een ander met de bekende zwembadjes om lekker te dobberen in de zee of het zwembad. Ik moest nog eens goed kijken, knipperde een paar keer met mijn ogen en nog eens

een extra grote slok koffie. Zag ik het nu goed? Waren daar nu al badgasten druk in de weer met het klaarleggen van badhanddoeken op de ligbedjes rond het zwembad? En dat terwijl het zwembad nog gesloten was? Ja inderdaad, ik zag het dus goed. Her en der lagen er al verschillende handdoeken, zwembandjes of andere persoonlijke spullen om de laten zien dat het gratis ligbedje bij het zwembad was toegeëigend door een van de gasten. Er werd zelf al geschoven met bedjes om het terrein af te bakenen, andere bedjes werden iets verder weggeschoven om vermoedelijk iets van privacy te creëren en betonnen voetstukken met parasols werden tactisch verplaatste om al dan niet meer zon of naar gelang schaduw te krijgen. Het werk van de vroege schoonmaaksters, die vakkundig alle bedjes netjes langs het zwembad hadden geëtaleerd werd tenietgedaan door deze brutale vakantiegasten. Minutenlang keek ik vol verbazing naar dit schouwspel, ondertussen rustig zippende aan mijn heerlijk koffie. Tientallen bedjes waren inmiddels voorzien van een badhanddoek, de meest ideale plekjes werden op deze wijze al bezet. Ik betrapte zelf een vakantieganger erop van het verwijderen van eerder door anderen geplaatste handdoeken waarna hij zijn eigen handdoeken ervoor in de plaats neerlegde. Het leek bijna een soort strijd te zijn, hoe eerder je bent des te beter kan de je dag bij het

zwembad doorbrengen. Wat een bizarre ervaring. De dagen daarop viel het mij op dat het vooral de Nederlandse gasten waren die bijna voor dag en douw naar buiten kwamen om de handdoeken op de bedjes plaatsen, al zal dit waarschijnlijk wel bij alle nationaliteiten voorkomen denk ik. En wellicht nog brutaler, het duurde vaak nog uren voordat de vakantiegangers pas naar het zwembad kwamen, urenlang bleven de bedjes op de handdoeken na - leeg. Daarna nog eens gedurende een lange lunchtijd en tegen het eind van de middag vertrokken de gasten weer met hun badhanddoeken om de volgende dag dit ritueel weer te herhalen.
Voor mij geheel nieuw, maar na het googlen zag ik nog veel meer filmpjes voorbijkomen, rennende badgasten, zelfs vechtpartijen bij het verkrijgen van een ligbedje aan een zwembad om daar de rest van je (vaak duurbetaalde) vakantie mee door te brengen…. Kijkt u zelf maar eens, en dan doen vooral de filmpjes vanuit de Spaanse badplaatsen het goed met het leedvermaak van de Hollandse vakantiegangers. Herkent u dit fenomeen? En mocht een van de Griekse eilanden nog op uw wensenlijstje staan? Gewoon doen! Maar dan wel buiten het hoogseizoen om!

Over the past 24 hours the river carried an average of 614 cubic metres of water a second past Lobith in Gelderland, where it crosses from Germany, below the 620 recorded in 1947. Hydrologist Jan Verkade of the Deltares research institute and Rijkswaterstaat gave the figures to broadcaster NOS. Around 503,000 Dutch households were living in energy poverty last year, or 6% of the total – unchanged from 2024, according to figures from statistics office CBS and research institute TNO published on Thursday. The share had dropped to under 4% in 2023 while government compensation for high energy bills was in place, then jumped back once the support ended. It remains below the 2019 level of nearly 10%. Researchers looked for the first time at how far people fall short, and found households on low incomes with high energy bills were on average €624 a year short of escaping energy poverty, up from €577 in 2024. Lifting them all out would have cost around €256 million. Average monthly energy costs rose from €167 to €181 across all households, and from €177 to €188 for those in energy poverty, who now spend 11.5% of their income on energy – more than twice the national average. The number of low-income households facing high energy bills rose from 385,000 to
410,000, while the number living in poorly insulated homes continued to fall. Energy poverty is most common in the big cities, northeast Groningen and south Limburg. The deepest shortfalls are in homes with very poor energy efficiency (€1,295 a year) and among owner-occupiers (€967). Earthquake An earthquake measuring 1.6 on the Richter scale has been recorded in Sappermeer, a village in the former Groningen gas field. Dutch archaeologists from Leiden University have discovered a 3,000-year-old tomb near the southern Egyptian city of Luxor.
According to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which has been collaborating with the Leiden team there since 2018, the tomb belonged to a man named Paser and dates back to the Ramesside period (circa 1292 to 1069 BC). “With our research into the tomb’s painted wall decoration and the archaeological finds, we hope to learn more about Paser and others who were buried in this tomb monument,” broadcaster NOS quoted team leader and Egyptologist Carina van den Hoven as saying. The painted decorations show Paser worshipping various deities, as well as him seated with his wife before an offering table. A ban on drawing water is also in force in parts of the Brabantse Delta region, around Breda. On the island of Terschelling, off the coast of Friesland, sheep have been banned from grazing and inspections of dykes have been stepped up amid concerns that the drought is causing cracks to appear. Japan’s ambassador to the Netherlands has attended a ceremony to commemorate labourers who died during the construction of the SiamBurma railway during the Second World War. It is the first time Michii Rokuichiro has been invited to join the annual ceremony at the Bronbeek estate in Arnhem, where he laid a wreath before a memorial to the victims on Saturday. Some 3,000 Dutch prisoners of war were among the tens of thousands of Allied soldiers and forced labourers from occupied south-east Asia who perished during the building of the 415km route between Thailand and Myanmar, which became known as the Death Railway.

De koekjes van Verkade die kennen we natuurlijk wel, maar wist je dat zij vanaf 1898 al begonnen met het maken van theelichtjes?
Gek eigenlijk, want Verkade is toch eigenlijk het meest bekend vanwege zijn koekjes. Het bedrijf had toch een heuse waxinefabriek. Uiteindelijk heeft Verkade ruim negentig jaar waxinelichtjes geproduceerd en verkocht. In 1991 werd de waxinefabriek door Verkade verkocht aan welbekende kaarsenmaker Bolsius.
Het waxinelichtje Werd ontdekt door de Engelsman Morris Fowler. Hij goot een mengsel van wax en paraffine bij elkaar in een klein bakje en ontdekte dat het een stabiel en veilig vlammetje opleverde. Het zou niet een Hollander zijn die er met het patent vandoor ging. De Nederlandse schoonvader Ericus Gerhardus Verkade
Dat mensen soms veel geld voor iets uitgeven, dat hoor je wel vaker, maar om nu 460 euro voor een geurkaars uit te geven? Oké, dan heb je wel wat. Skins Cosmetics verkoopt geurkaarsen waarvan het waxrecept is gemaakt onder de productietak van de historische Franse kaarsenmaker Maison de Cire Trudon. Deze 100% plantaardig geurkaars met zuivere katoenen lont is biologisch afbreekbaar, allergeen en bevat geen pesticiden. Kijk dat is nou eens fijn voor zoveel geld? Detail: de kaars brandt wel 50-60 uur. Reken maar uit: een geurkaars van Bolsius kost (in de aanbieding) 1,99 euro en gaat 23 uur mee. Zie ik het verschil of…moet ik dat juist ruiken? Het boterkaarsje..huh?
Bolsius verkoopt miljarden
Lieve lezers, Ik ben GT Rovers. Een vrouw, een vijftiger en moeder van twee fantastische zonen. Pseudoniem GT Rovers Mijn eigen voor- en achternaam (Elzeline Koerselman) zijn niet heel gemakkelijk. Gedoemd tot spellen zeg ik altijd. Daarom gebruik ik net als veel schrijvers dat vroeger deden een pseudoniem. Boeken Ik hing als klein meisje altijd al aan de lippen van mijn grootouders wanneer zij vertelden over hun leven vroeger. Naarmate ik ouder werd ontstond de passie om te schrijven over de jaren dertig tot begin jaren negentig. De columns die ik daarover schrijf zijn te lezen in TrosKompas, op mijn website en in mijn boeken: ‘Pure nostalgie’ en ‘Meer nostalgie’ en ‘Nederland bevrijd’. OLD PEOPLE’S HOMES Here we are.... after 47 years in Australia, living in a so-called “Over 50’s Lifestyle Unit”. How did we get here:
Elke maand bespreken wij in het kort een boek dat is toegevoegd aan het bestand van Nederlandstalige boeken in de Dutch Club “Mies” bibliotheek, 99 Loftus Street, Leederville, Perth, WA. Een schitterend gebrek door Arthur Japin
De boeken van Arthur Japin zijn kippensoep voor de ziel. “Een schitterend gebrek” is een klein detail uit de geschiedenis waarvan door Japin een prachtige historische roman wordt geschreven. Het einde van deze roman heeft geen traditioneel happy ending maar is een logische en acceptabele afronding van een stukje geschiedenis, ondermeer gebaseerd op de memoires van Giacomo Casanova en beschreven vanuit Lucia’s, standpunt - zij was zijn eerste en echte liefde. Dit boek kon ik niet neerleggen. Het boek pakte me omdat het verteld over de verschillende kanten van liefde: Wat heb je voor elkaar over? Wat geef je op? Moet je soms iemand laten gaan omdat het misschien beter is? Of moet je bij elkaar blijven omdat liefde het enige is dat telt? Het verhaal raakte mij. Vaak ook las ik de menige filosofische overwegingen nog een keer. Soms kopieerde ik overwegingen zodat ik deze nog eens kan nalezen en erover kan nadenken. Ik las dit boek ‘savonds in bed totdat mijn ogen dichtvielen. Het taalgebruik is een ballet van prachtige zinnen, mooie opbouw en fascinerend woordgebruik. Een meeslepend verhaal gebouwd op historische feiten. En een kers op de literaire cake is dat de twee hoofdpersonen in Amsterdam de voorstelling van een klucht bijwonen. De klucht werd midden 18e eeuw door de schrijver’s voorvader, Jacques Japin, geschreven. Een juweel van een boek in meerdere opzichten en te leen in de Mies Bibliotheek. The year is 2021 and we are still living in Endeavour Hills, where we lived for over 40 years. We got older, got some niggling health problems, but for the rest we were still quite active socially. And never thought that we would move away from Endeavour Hills. Until one morning in February 2021, our daughter, who lives in Woodend for many years, called us that she had seen a beautiful country estate and thought that it might be something nice for us. We would be closer to her if anything would happen.
In Endeavour Hills we were living far away from all our children. If there would be a problem the children had to travel from far and wide. We called the estate right away and told them that we would come to have a look. It was a Saturday morning. They told us to hurry, because they would close at 1.00pm. We said “Wait for us, we will be there as soon as we can. They waited for us, they took us around to various units that were still available. We saw one that we liked and the rest is history.
In hindsight it was a very good decision. After moving in we both got severe health issues. Our youngest daughter, who lives virtually around the corner, became our beacon. She steered us toward the right medical people, took me to radiology sessions for 5 weeks, 5 days per week. Perked us up when we needed it. Anyway, many good reasons why we have moved in to an “older people’s” facility, thus moving closer to the children. We have not regretted this move at all.

Maar.... die zijn inkoop al zooooo duur. 🎉 Maar nu ben ik benieuwd: welke andere Nederlandse producten zouden jullie graag op de website zien en op te halen op de markt
Toen ik in de Aldi-advertentie duidelijk zag dat er dit jaar tijdens de Nederlandse Dagen geen hagelslag was, dacht ik: oké… dan bel ik gewoon even met de groothandel hier en zorg ik ervoor dat mensen via mijn nieuwe website tóch aan hagelslag kunnen komen. 😄 Want ja, hagelslag wordt door Nederlanders gewoon dagelijks gegeten als ontbijt. Hondjes door: MARJO GILJAM
Sommige meisjes hebben een verzorg-pony; ik heb de laatste zeg maar anderhalve maand een verzorg-hondje, ik zal hem Mickey noemen. Mickey’s baasje is geopereerd van de heup, zodoende mag deze zes weken niet fietsen, auto rijden, bukken en ook geen hond uitlaten. Ik ben al jaren een van Mickey’s favoriete dorpsbewoners, het uitlaten is zowel voor het hondje als voor mij een dagelijks terugkerend feest. Mickey mag van zijn baasje niet los lopen, en als ik terug denk aan mijn toenmalige hondje Does dan is dat niet eens zo’n slecht idee. Does zat in het asiel omdat zijn vrouwtje was overleden, het arme dier had natuurlijk veel meegemaakt. Tegenwoordig zouden mensen zeggen dat het een hond met een rugzak was. Hij kon er niet tegen wanneer mensen mij aan wilden raken, lastig op verjaardagen en verzint u de rest er zelf maar bij. Na verloop van tijd ging dat gelukkig beter, maar toch leek het me raadzaam om hem in het dorp aan de lijn te houden zodat hij niet in andermans tuin rond ging scharrelen. Op het strand mocht hij wel los, en als de zee onstuimig was, kon hij uren bezig zijn met het achterna zitten van de branding. Hij probeerde de golven te grijpen en stond meer dan eens te kokhalzen nadat hij tevergeefs een golf probeerde te vangen.

Dat zul je nu altijd zien, ben je gezellig met je vriendinnetje in de duinen, komt er een wildvreemde hond langs die er vandoor gaat met je onderbroek. Ik ben maar niet gaan kijken of de eigenaar zijn onderbroek terug wilde hebben, dat zou trouwens nog niet meegevallen zijn, want Does wilde onder geen beding zijn pas verworven trofee los laten. Er zat niets ander op dan om Does met onderbroek en al mee naar huis te nemen waar hij zo trots als een pauw in zijn mand op het textiel ging liggen kauwen.
Wij woonden nog niet zo lang in Drenthe en probeerden de omgeving te leren kennen. Op een zondagmiddag besloten we om in het bos van Witteveen te gaan wandelen, de parkeerplek was vlakbij het hotel. Toen we de auto neerzetten kwam een herder om de hoek van het hotel, en toen het dier zag dat wij de gele paaltjesroute zouden gaan lopen, ging hij opgewekt mee. Bij iedere bocht keek hij of wij wel achterop kwamen, en na afloop ging hij weer netjes naar zijn plekOp een gegeven moment stond je bij het hotel. It was another very busy book launch. In fact, Paul Rubens from the Holland Festival had been asked not to promote the event on his Facebook page because the previous exhibition opening had attracted such a large crowd that it was almost too much to manage. This time, with publicity limited to the newspaper and, no doubt, plenty of word of mouth, the room was once again full. Fortunately, there were plenty of seats available, with only a few people left standing. The afternoon included several short speeches. We were welcomed by the organisers of both the book and the exhibition, who made it clear that the greatest applause belonged to the community whose stories and support made the project possible. Hetty Schellenbach also gave special mention to Jill A’Vard, Gerrie and Ann van Horick. I

briefly met Hetty at the event, and it was lovely to see her there. She is also a regular follower of my Facebook page, which was a nice surprise. Among the familiar faces were speaker Michael Gijsberts and Holland Festival organiser Paul Rubens, both of whom I often see at community events. I haven’t spent much time in Monbulk, but after visiting this exhibition I really should. There are so many fascinating local stories. I enjoyed reading them throughout the exhibition and look forward to continuing with them in the book. I will publish a few of these stories in the newspaper, but I would also encourage readers to purchase the book. I know how much work goes into gathering and preserving these stories, and it is a wonderful achievement by everyone involved. Carole Overmaat

Marijke Lopez by Marianne Pietersen Marijke Lopez lives in my village in Birkdale, Qld. She talked with me about her migrating experience. She was born Marijke Buchele in Apeldoorn in 1947. Her parents were Cornelia and Dirk Buchele. Cornelia came from Amsterdam, Dirk from Apeldoorn. Father Dirk was a baker and pastry cook and his shop delivered to Palace “Het Loo”, where the retired queen Wilhelmina lived. Cornelia worked in the bakery shop. Marijke’s parents decided to emigrate to Australia in1951 because of the bad economy in Netherlands after the war. Marijke has one sister, her twin Elly. They were five years old when they arrived in Australia on the ship SS Himalaya of the P&O line. The family spent their first night in Melbourne in a park, before catching the train to Brisbane the next day, as instructed by their sponsor. They were sponsored for Dirk to work as a pastry chef in Finneys (now David Jones) and upon arrival in
