Jeah weer een geprinte krant dit keer. Wat fijn dat dat nog kan.

Een krant met een grote focus op kunst dit keer.

Waarschijnlijk in een tijd van crisis heeft kunst altijd een grote rol. Het fleurt op, het inspireert, Facebook wordt er vrolijker van en bijna als tegenhanger van de elende dat er ook in de wereld is.

De Dutch Courier wil altijd een positieve noot zijn in een donkere tijd. Dit hebben we altijd al willen zijn. Gewoon een lichtpuntje. Ook met positiviteit en het laten zien van krachtige mannen en vrouwen in hun nieuwe land.

We gaan verder met de memoires van Marja Rogers die door haar man is ingestuurd en nu ook door haar kleinkinderen wordt gelezen. Het is een heel verhaal en wordt daardoor ook stukje voor stukje gepubliceerd.

Verder weer meer Dutch people in the world, zodat we ook kunnen zien wat er zoal buiten Australie gebeurd op het gebied van Nederlanders. Want ja, we zijn nou eenmaal een grote groep buiten Nederland en inderdaad officieel de 14e provincie die inderdaad ook mag stemmen nu voor de eerste kamer (Dit natuurlijk als je nog de Nederlandse nationaliteit hebt ).

BVN tips schrijven we ook nog steeds, alhoewel steeds meer mensen via een VPN hun televisie kijkt. Hoe dat kan kijk even op bladzijde. En twee verhalen waar het uitdelen bij verjaardagen naar voren komt. En halen jullie zelf ook nog steeds de taart bij de bakker om uit te delen bij je eigen verjaardag? Of maken jullie je eigen appeltaart? Voor deze twee laatste vragen kunt u naar pagina 6 gaan.

Mauritshuis in court over gifted paintings, including Rembrandts

The Mauritshuis gallery in The Hague may lose 25 paintings loaned to it in 1946, including several Rembrandts, because of a complicated legal dispute, Trouw reported on Friday.

The relatives of the sole heir of Abraham Bredius, a collector and former museum director who gave the works to the museum, are taking the Mauritshuis to court on Friday, demanding their return.

The works include some of the museum’s most important art, including a portrait of two Black men Rembrandt met in Amsterdam and a painting of Homer, the paper said.

Bredius never married or had children, and the complainants in the case are descendants of Joseph Kroning, a Bredius “protégé” who was the only person to inherit un-

The number of formal domestic violence reports made to hotline and advisory group Veilig Thuis rose 5% last year to 136,000, according to new figures published on Thursday by the agency and national statistics office CBS.

Around half the reports related to child abuse, and 39% were about a violent partner or ex-partner, the agency said. In total, members of the public, victims and professionals made 315,000 inquiries to the agency.

The agency says the increase in formal reports and inquiries may be down to better awareness of the problem, which was highlighted in a media campaign last year.

Some nine in 10 reports were from professionals, including the police, healthcare workers and teachers. Most of the rest came from neighbours, family and friends.

Last year the Council of Europe’s monitoring body GREVIO said the Netherlands is not doing enough to prevent violence against women, despite making some advances.

Bredius left the art to the museum on condition that it was always on show, but Kroning’s relatives say this is not the case. While the Rembrandts are always on view, pictures by Jan Steen and Jan van Goyen, for example, are largely kept in storage.

Their lawyer, Gert-Jan van den Bergh, told Trouw that they are not in this for the money. “The aim is that the works are put on show,” he said. “It is about respect for Bredius’ will. If the Mauritshuis won’t comply, the family will look for a place where the legacy and the conditions are respected.”

The Mauritshuis declined to comment on the situation, which has reportedly been ongoing since 2014.

In June, MPs voted to adopt “Clare’s Law” which will allow women to check if their partner has convictions for domestic violence. At the same time, domestic violence is not given enough attention when allocating parental authority when a couple splits up, the agency said.

In the Netherlands, a woman is murdered every eight days, usually by a partner or ex. Between 2020 and 2024, 30 children under the age of 10 were murdered in the Netherlands, 26 of whom were killed by a parent.

Veilig Huis said that while the organisation has an important role in tackling domestic violence, it cannot work alone.

“We need good cooperation between councils, police, healthcare groups and the justice department to realise sustainable safety,” the agency said. “The link between care and punishment also needs to be strengthened so that those involved can get the appropriate help and protection on time.”

Dat ik zo op mijn moeder lijk…

Zittend daar bij Hanni kan ik in eerste instantie geen woord uitbrengen. Hanni vertelt over het vijf jaar jongere zusje Henny, dat op twintigjarige leeftijd samen met mijn grootouders in Auschwitz werd vermoord. En dan in één adem worden mijn jeugdervaringen met tante Vera door deze lieve vrouw bevestigd: ‘Wat ik toen al vreemd vond, was dat de zusjes Ellen en Vera niet met elkaar optrokken,’ zegt Hanni. ‘Ik zag Vera zelden als ik bij hen op bezoek was. Vera had andere vriendinnetjes en ik herinner me zelfs dat er een zekere animositeit tussen de tweelingzusjes bestond. Vera was een serieus en ernstig meisje, ingetogen, introvert en evenwichtig. Ze kon goed leren en ging naar het gymnasium. Jouw moeder Ellen daarentegen was de extraverte van de twee. Een uitbundig en enthousiast meisje, dat vol zat met fantasieverhalen.’ Ik hang aan Hanni’s lippen en kan er niet genoeg van krijgen om deze verhalen over mijn moeder te horen.’

Ze gaat verder en zegt dat ze mijn moeder zelfs bevlogen noemt. ‘Ellen was een gangmaker, met minder oog voor studieboeken. Als er ergens iets te doen was, was zij er als de kippen bij. Ze zat bij de padvinderij en later op de toneelclub waar ze meteen in het bestuur belandde.’ Hanni bevestigt nogmaals wat ze me het jaar daarvoor in ons telefoongesprek vertelde. Dat mijn moeder goed kon schrijven, dat ze in

diverse schoolkrantredacties zat, maar dat ze vooral verzot op kinderen was. Terwijl ik naar haar luister, zie ik opeens het blocknootvelletje voor me waarop tante Vera had beschreven dat Ellen op straat ieder kind aansprak en in alle kinderwagens keek. Toen ik op mijn achttiende dit las, heb ik vooral dat aspect in mijn herinnering opgeslagen. Omdat ik mezelf toen in mijn moeder herkende. Ik neem me voor om dat papiertje op te zoeken als ik weer thuis ben.

Ik zie mijn kinderen lachen als ik Hanni hoor vertellen dat zij en mijn moeder even snel verliefd werden als dat ze hun interesse weer verloren. En dat de vriendinnen in de bibliotheek van mijn grootvader medische boeken en encyclopedieën doorplozen op plaatjes en informatie over seks. Ik kijk naar het doorgegroefde en lieve gezicht van Hanni en voel het door mijn hele lichaam. De bal die ik tot nu toe uit alle macht onder water heb gedrukt, is niet meer tegen te houden. Ik durf de geschiedenis voor het eerst tot recht in mijn hart te laten doordringen. In de nabijheid van mijn kinderen wordt het verdriet zachter en kan ik het beter accepteren.

Wat een eer om een gedicht te mogen voordragen op Anzac Day.

Ik had al vaker gedichten voorgedragen, op 4 Mei, over de Tweede Wereldoorlog, maar nog nooit over de eerste Hoop dat het nooit zover komt

dat ik een gedicht moet maken over de Derde. Of let ik niet goed op en zitten we al in de Vierde… Een olie oorlog woedt zowiezo.

Oud soldaten en nabestaanden liepen in vol ornaat binnen bij Dutch Club Abel Tasman. Er was een heerlijke lunch en er waren mooie en kleine rituelen. De volksliederen van zowel Nederland als

Australië werden gezongen. Een waardige plechtigheid. Al kan ik het niet nalaten om te zeggen dat het volkslied van Nederland eigenlijk zo een achterlijke tekst heeft, dat ik het elke keer weer maar moeilijk mijn strot uit krijg, om het maar eens in onvervalst

Amsterdams/Mokums, te zeggen. Mooie melodie, dat wel. Ik moet nog flink oefenen voor het Australische volkslied. Het WK begint pas over een maand, dus ik heb nog even.

Om te koesteren is de gedenkdag ook. Ik hoorde dat er in de voorbije jaren meer dan 150 mensen bij de plechtigheid waren. Dat cijfer neemt wel af bij het klimmen der jaren. Over de opkomst was niet

te klagen betreffende de Koningsnacht en bij de Koningsmarkt. Zeer geslaagde en goed georganiseerde evenementen, waar de gezelligheid van afdroop.

Het Nederlandse lied koester ik ook graag. Hoorde dat aan het eind van dit jaar er een musical komt over het leven van de veel te vroeg overleden Frans Halsema. Hij werd maar 44 jaar.

At Philips Stadium, PSV was crowned champions of the Netherlands on April 5 for the 27th time and their third consecutive title. They secured the win with five games remaining following a 0-0 draw with Feyenoord. The club set a record for the earliest Eredivisie title victory, with a 17 point lead over their nearest rivals, Feyenoord.

I should be reporting on the Feyenoord/ PSV match, but I’ve chosen PSV’s April 5th home match against Utrecht. It was a joyful atmosphere with the 37,000 PSV faithful singing, chanting, and cheering for their club. However, Utrecht had not read the script and scored first in the 3rd minute with Artem Stepanov striking home with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. It was a strange goal:a high cross from midfield to the wing looked to go out but was headed back to a defender. The same player who headed it back into play immediately sprinted down the wing. He released the ball close to the goal line, crossing to Stepanov.

Saibairi almost equalised in the 6th minute, but a diving save diverted the ball away from the corner. However, it was Utrecht who would score in the 13th minute through a Zechiel strike from the centre of the box after a long goalkeeper clearance was headed diagonally to a Utrecht forward who immediately passed to a sprinting Zechiel who outpaced the PSV defence to score.

They threatened to score a third before Isael Saibari breathed a sigh of relief for the PSV fans, scoring in the top right corner in the 21st. It was a freakish goal, with a long pass finding Saibari on the sideline. He appeared to have been well marked by the defender, but the Morroccan international’s sheer strength and speed rounded the defender. He cut back into the box before delivering the shot into the top corner.

Still, Utrecht kept pressing, and a Niklas Vesterlund header was saved by the PSV Czech national goalkeeper, Matej Kovar. The close passing inside the box by Utrecht was

PSV came out in the second half determined not to let their supporters down. In the third minute, after a simple lob over the top by Mauro Junio, Saibari’s strength and speed allowed him to round the defender, cut inside, and send a shot into the top right corner.

Although Utrecht responded with two corners in quick succession, PSV broke from the corner through a fast counterattack, and one-touch passing found Saibari in the box. He glided effortlessly past his marker and slid the ball across the goal to Guus Til, who scored from close range.

More on last page almost arrogant and humiliating in its enterprise. The game swung from end to end, with both teams having chances. Dutch Treats door

Pas geleden toen we de verjaardag van één van onze collega’s vierden, werden we er even aan herinnerd dat de uitdrukking “Dutch treat” zoals die door Engelstaligen gebruikt wordt, voor ons op die dag iets heel anders was. Wij hadden ervoor gezorgd dat er lekkere dingen te verorberen waren, maar het was de taart die de jarige meegebracht had, die het middelpunt van ons feestje was.

Ik denk dat buitenlanders die nooit in Nederland zijn geweest of die geen nauw contact met Nederlanders hebben, zeker niet weten wat een echte Nederlandse traktatie is. Waar ik het over heb, dat is de traktatie waar de jarige zelf voor zorgt. Met andere woorden: vreemd genoeg trakteert in Nederland de jarige. Hij of zij wordt niet getrakteerd. Zo’n traktatie is volgens de organisatie Werkzoeken.nl “een diepgeworteld onderdeel van de Nederlandse werkcultuur. Het gebeurt hoofdzakelijk in groepsverband (met collega’s) bij verjaardagen, zwangerschapsverlof of afscheid. Het is een sociale gewoonte die zorgt voor variatie tijdens het werk en wordt vaak gewaardeerd als een moment van verbinding. Wat wordt er

getrakteerd? Populaire traktaties zijn taart, gebakjes, soesjes, donuts, muffins of gezondere opties zoals fruit.

Timing: Vaak in de ochtend (zoet) of de vroege namiddag (hartig), soms tijdens een vergadering.

Uitzonderingen: Bij internationale bedrijven is trakteren minder gebruikelijk.

Eind tachtiger jaren werkte ik als bedrijfsmaatschappelijk werkster bij de PTT in het Stationspostgebouw in Amsterdam. Toen ik op mijn verjaardag op weg naar werk was, herinnerde ik mij gelukkig opeens dat ik met een traktatie moest komen! Tot mijn grote opluchting kon ik een banketbakkerszaak vinden en ben dus niet met lege handen op mijn werk aangekomen.

Dat trakteren beginnen we op school al mee, want op je verjaardag gaf je moeder je een zak snoepjes voor de klasgenootjes mee en, in mijn lagere school tijd, een bonbon voor ieder van de drie onderwijzeressen en voor ieder van de drie meesters een sigaret. Ja, dat was nog in het tijdperk dat roken heel normaal gevonden werd; dat er overal in je huis

asbakjes en aanstekers stonden en dat je uit een speciaal, mooi bewerkt sigarettendoosje je gasten een sigaret aanbood. Bij ons in het museum kunt u asbakjes, die vaak souvenirs zijn, en aanstekers uit die tijd vinden. Je kreeg van de juffrouw een grote, kleurige papieren strik op je schouder gespeld en mocht vlak voor het speelkwartier, samen met je beste vriend of vriendin langs de andere klassen gaan om de juffrouwen en meesters te trakteren en je zusje of broertje in andere klassen een snoepje te geven. In mijn geval was alles nog feestelijker, want ik had drie jaar lang als juf Mevrouw Verhofstadt, die op dezelfde dag als ik jarig was! Zij kwam natuurlijk ook met een traktatie voor de hele klas en zal zeer zeker ook heel lekkere dingen voor haar collega’s in de docentenkamer meegebracht hebben.

Een Australische vriend heeft mij onlangs verteld dat het trakteren op de lagere school ook in Australië gangbaar is. In ieder geval herinnert hij zich dat van zijn schooljaren. Ik dacht meteen: Dat ga ik eens leuk uitzoeken. En kijk eens wat ik vond!

Yes, in Australian primary schools, it is customary for students who bring in birthday treats to treat the whole class. Treats are typically small, individual items like cupcakes, icy poles, or stickers, and must be nut-free. It is essential to check with the teacher first as some schools prefer non-food items.

• Alternatives: If not bringing treats, the birthday child is usually celebrated by singing Happy Birthday and perhaps wearing a special badge or having a decorated chair.

• Always ask the teacher about school policies regarding food allergies before bringing treats to school.

Cupcakes? Voor de hele klas? De ouders van de kinderen waar ik mee op de lagere school zat en onze eigen moeder konden zich zoiets niet permitteren, Zuurtjes of, op zijn hoogst toffees, dat was waar wij mee kwamen. In die tijd bestonden er blijkbaar geen voedselallergieën, of waren we er ons niet van bewust. Wat dat betreft was het leven toen veel eenvoudiger. Nu iets over de uitdrukking: Dutch Treat en andere opmerkingen waarin “Dutch” gebruikt wordt om iets aan te duiden dat niet echt, minder-

waardig of negatief is. Het gebruik stamt grotendeels uit de 17e-eeuwse commerciële rivaliteit en de oorlogen tussen Engeland en de Nederlandse Republiek. Het was doodeenvoudige propaganda en bedoeld om het Nederlandse volk te beledigen en af te schilderen als gierig, als inferieur en “nep” en onbetrouwbaar. Als voorbeelden van “Dutch” als inferieur of nep het volgende:

Dutch courage: Lafheid. Ontstond tijdens de AngloNederlandse oorlogen, toen

Engelse soldaten beweerden dat Nederlanders alleen moed hadden na het drinken van jenever.

Dutch treat: Betekent traditioneel dat iedereen voor zichzelf betaalt. De Engelsen verwachtten in hun cultuur een traktatie door één persoon en zagen dit gebruik als gierig of als “geen traktatie”.

Dutch gold/metal: Een legering van koper en zink die werd gebruikt als goedkope imitatie van echt bladgoud.

Double Dutch (abracadabra/onsamenhangend gepraat): Impliceerde dat de Nederlandse taal onbegrijpelijk of volkomen onzin was.

Dutch uncle: Geen echte oom, maar iemand die eerlijke, recht-voor-zijn-raap raad geeft die bedoeld is voor het welzijn van de ontvanger.

Appeltaart recept

Ingrediënten

Voor het deeg:

300 g bloem

200 g koude boter (in blokjes)

150 g suiker

1 ei snufje zout

Voor de vulling:

1 kg appels (bijv. Granny Smith appels of Elstar appels)

100 g suiker

2 theelepels kaneel

1 zakje vanillesuiker

2 eetlepels paneermeel optioneel: rozijnen

Deeg maken

Meng bloem, suiker en zout. Voeg de boter toe en wrijf tot een kruimelig mengsel. Voeg het ei toe en kneed tot een samenhangend deeg. Laat 30 minuten rusten in de koelkast.

2. Vulling voorbereiden

Schil de appels, verwijder het klokhuis en snijd in stukjes.

Meng met suiker, kaneel en vanillesuiker. Voeg eventueel rozijnen toe.

3. Oven voorverwarmen

Verwarm de oven voor op 180°C.

4. Taart opbouwen

Vet een springvorm in.

Bekleed de bodem en randen met 2/3 van het deeg. Strooi paneermeel op de bodem (tegen vocht).

Voeg de appelvulling toe.

5. Afwerken

Maak van de rest van het deeg reepjes en leg die kruislings over de taart.

6. Bakken

Bak de taart in 60–70 minuten goudbruin.

Eenzame autist op Avontuur

Wat als je grootste droom ook je grootste angst is?

Jaren geleden was ik een eenzame, introverte man die niet durfde te reizen. Toch nam ik op mijn vijfendertigste een radicaal besluit: ik zette mijn voorspelbare bestaan op pauze om mijn grootste droom waar te maken — een soloreis naar Australië. Na jaren van plannen en sparen begon mijn avontuur eindelijk in Sydney.

Tijdens die reis ontmoette ik mensen die ieder op hun eigen manier een blijvende indruk op me maakten. Sommigen boden onverwachte steun en vriendschap, anderen confronteerden me op pijnlijke maar waardevolle wijze met mijn gedrag en mijn kijk op het leven. Hoe verwarrend of moeilijk sommige ontmoetingen ook waren, ze brachten me steeds dichter bij mezelf. Ik leerde meer over verbinding, kwetsbaarheid, vertrouwen en de kracht van kleine stappen zetten, zelfs als je bang bent.

Australië vormde daarbij het indrukwekkende decor van mijn persoonlijke ontwikkeling. De natuur, de ruimte en de ontspannen sfeer maakten diepe indruk op me. Ik begrijp dan ook heel goed waarom zoveel Nederlanders daar een thuis hebben gevonden. De hartelijkheid van de Aussies en de laidback cultuur zorgden ervoor dat Australië voor mij als een tweede thuis voelt. Ondanks dat ik inmiddels alweer jaren in Nederland woon, mis ik Australië nog regelmatig.

Geïnspireerd door mijn ervaringen schreef ik mijn boek Eenzame autist op avontuur. Daarin vertel ik openhartig over mijn autisme, de eenzaamheid die ik destijds ervoer en de lessen die reizen mij hebben geleerd. Ik hoop daarmee anderen te inspireren om, ondanks angst of onzekerheid, hun eigen avontuur aan te gaan.

Diezelfde reis motiveerde me ook om te starten als reisadviseur. Vanuit mijn eigen ervaring help ik nu graag anderen om hún angsten te overwinnen en de stap naar reizen te durven zetten — het liefst natuurlijk naar het onvergetelijke Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland.

Nooit gedaan, dus ik denk dat ik het wel kan

Er zijn van die mensen die eerst een cursus volgen, boeken lezen, een expert raadplegen en pas dan voorzichtig besluiten ergens aan te beginnen. En dan heb je mensen zoals ik. Mijn motto is al zeker vijftien jaar: Nooit gedaan, dus ik denk dat ik het wel kan.

Een tikkeltje naïef misschien, maar tot nu toe heeft het me verrassend ver gebracht. Zo begon ik ooit zonder enige televisie-ervaring een tv-programma hier in Melbourne en nam ik later ook nog de Nederlandse krant over. Niet omdat ik nou per se talent had voor produceren of journalistiek (Alhoewel dat natuurlijk wel als onderdeel van mijn studie vrijetijdskunde naar voren kwam) , maar omdat ik een visie had. Ik zag het als een manier om te communiceren met de Nederlandse community. En zolang het doel helder was, maakte het me eerlijk gezegd weinig uit dat ik onderweg nog moest uitvinden hoe alles werkte.

Afgelopen weekend werd diezelfde Pippi Langkousmentaliteit weer wakker ge-

schud. Een vriendin van mij organiseerde een kunsttentoonstelling. Mijn eerste reactie? Huh, wist niet eens dat je dat zomaar kon. Maar goed, ik ging kijken en was direct verkocht. Haar werk was prachtig. Professioneel, origineel en vol kleur.

“Hoe lang doe je dit al?” vroeg ik bewonderend.

“Pas een jaar,” zei ze luchtig.

Een jaar?! Ik ken kunstenaars die al járen bezig zijn en nauwelijks iets verkopen, terwijl zij het ene schilderij na het andere verkoopt. Het was inspirerend om te zien dat passie en lef soms belangrijker zijn dan jarenlang wachten tot je jezelf ‘goed genoeg’ vindt.

De week erop gaf ze een workshop waarin ze haar techniek uitlegde. Ik schreef me vooral in om haar te steunen — ik weet immers hoe lastig het is om een workshop vol te krijgen. Maar niets bleek minder waar: ik had nog nét het laatste plekje weten te bemachtigen.

Daar zaten we dan met onze doeken. Eerst wat achtergrond gekrabbel, toen blobs, daarna zwarte stippen voor het hart van de bloemen. Vervolgens blaadjes, schaduwen, witte blobs, groene blobs en nog wat extra blobs voor de gezelligheid. Misschien een beetje goud eroverheen. Waarom ook niet?

“En wanneer weet je dat het af is?” vroeg ik.

Mijn vriendin haalde haar schouders op. “Dat voel je gewoon. Klaar is klaar.” En ergens vond ik dat mis-

schien nog wel het mooiste antwoord van de hele middag. Sindsdien schilder ik alsof mijn leven ervan afhangt. Opeens zie ik kleurencombinaties, droom ik over bloemen en denk ik na over lijsten en composities alsof ik nooit anders heb gedaan. Terwijl schilderen nou precies zo’n ding was waarvan ik mijn hele leven zei: Dat kan ik niet.

Grappig eigenlijk, hoe vaak we onszelf beperken met overtuigingen die nergens op gebaseerd zijn. Hoe vaak zeggen we niet: “Dat ligt me niet,” of “Daar ben ik niet creatief genoeg voor,” terwijl we het simpelweg nog nooit geprobeerd hebben?

Door ergens zonder verwachtingen in te stappen, puur uit nieuwsgierigheid, ging er ineens weer een nieuw luikje open in mijn leven. En dat is misschien wel de les van deze week: hoeveel talenten laten we onontdekt omdat we bij voorbaat al besloten hebben dat we iets niet kunnen?

Dus mijn vraag aan jou deze week is:

Wat denk jij dat jij niet kan… terwijl je het misschien gewoon nog nooit geprobeerd hebt?

Wetsvoorstel dubbele nationaliteit: UPDATE

Op de website van de Tweede Kamer wordt aangekondigd dat het initiatief-wetsvoorstel voor de wijziging van het nationaliteitsrecht van Jan Paternotte (D66) en Songül Mutluer (GroenLinks/PvdA) naar verwachting in week 24 (van 8 t/m 12 juni) plenair zal worden besproken in de Tweede Kamer. Deze datum is helaas al een paar keer verzet. We hopen dat het ditmaal definitief is, al zal het e.e.a. mede afhankelijk zijn van de internationale geopolitieke situatie, die momenteel instabiel is, waarop de Kamer ad-hoc moet reageren.

Dit wetsvoorstel komt nog uit de vorige legislatuurperiode en gaat verder dan wat er in het huidige regeerakkoord staat (dit wetsvoorstel voorziet namelijk ook in de mogelijkheid voor dubbele nationaliteit voor ‘nieuwe’ Nederlanders, niet enkel voor bestaande Nederlanders). Het zal dan ook extra interessant

zijn om te kijken hoe andere partijen hierin staan, met name coalitiepartijen CDA en VVD.

De SNBN volgt niet alleen de ontwikkelingen op de voet, maar is op de achtergrond al actief bezig. Daarnaast beraden we ons op ook publieke stappen, daarover binnenkort

Terugblik: Emigratiebeurs

Tijdens het weekend van 21-22 maart vond in de Jaarbeurs Utrecht de jaarlijkse Emigratiebeurs plaats. De SNBN was ter plaatse en heeft speciaal hiervoor een emigratie-waarschuwingsfolder ontworpen en deze aan zo veel mogelijk bezoekers uitgedeeld.

Met name vragen over belastingen en pensioenen kwamen langs - andere punten werden door bezoekers met verbazing aangehoord, zoals het feit dat je buiten de EU je Nederlanderschap kunt verliezen.

Het is ons duidelijk geworden dat de SNBN hier een rol heeft, en in een informatiebehoefte voorziet.

Inzichten LeerlingVizier 2025 (NOB)

Recentelijk heeft de Stichting Nederlands Onderwijs in het Buitenland (NOB) de LeerlingVizier 2025 gepubliceerd, het tweejaarlijkse onderzoek onder ouders en leerlingen die wereldwijd onderwijs Nederlands volgen. Belangrijkste uitkomsten waren:

60% van de ouders ziet meertaligheid als reden om hun kind onderwijs Nederlands in het buitenland te laten volgen vanwege de positieve invloed op hun toekomstperspectief; 38% van de leerlingen volgt (mede) onderwijs Nederlands omdat ze later misschien (weer) in Nederland of Vlaanderen naar school willen gaan; Ouders waarderen dit onderwijs omdat het hun kinderen houvast biedt in taal, cultuur en identiteitsontwikkeling.

Deze uitkomsten onderstrepen eens te meer waarom de SNBN een fervent supporter is van de NOB, en we zien uit naar verdere goede samenwerking.

A Dutch-born adventurer who, along with his wife Clary, has spent over 19 years traveling around the world in an expedition vehicle.

144 countries… and still exploring.

Following our winter expedition through Iceland and Siberia, we are now on the final leg of this journey travelling from Vancouver to Alaska, after crossing Canada from east to west in 2025. After decades of travel, certain truths become very clear: The world is far bigger than any map. People are kinder than the news media suggests. And adventure does not have an expiry date. The road has given us challenges, breakdowns, border delays, extreme weather, and uncertainty. But it has also given us sunrises in empty deserts, friendships

across languages, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing we chose to live fully rather than safely.

This trip certainly tested us — leaving Australia at +36°C and experiencing temperatures down to –38°C, with daytime highs around –20°C. Next chapter already planned: with approval to re-import our European registered vehicle into Australia, we will ship it home in August 2026 to begin another 4-year Australian overland adventure.

A sincere thank you to the many small town tourism volunteers we met around the world. Your passion and dedication to promoting your communities proves that real travel is about people, not brochures.

We also want to acknowledge some very special people who became part of this chapter of our story: Jay and Bernice, Steve and Leeann Clause. Carl and his wife Laura for sharing their hard-earned Yukon and Alaska experience that helped us prepare for what lay ahead. My first day at primary school was a disaster. I was placed next to a girl who had repeated. She plucked a bit of fluff from her jumper and blew them across our desk. I thought this was great fun and did the same, was caught and spent the rest of the day and most of that year standing in the corner with my back to the class. I suppose I was bored since I could read and write.

The teachers were old, much older than my parents. My father who thought he could discuss anything with a six year old, told me that most teachers had had ‘een klap van de molen’ a hit from the blades of a windmill, meaning someone was slightly mad. With this in mind, it reflected my attitude to teachers for the rest of my schooling. For lunch we went home. Birthdays are celebrated big time in the Netherlands. It is usually open house. Neighbours, relatives and friends call in. When it was anyone’s birthday at my primary school, he or she would bring a tin with sweets. Say for thirty children you would bring 30 sweets plus one each for each of the six teachers.

After having given the children a sweet, you would then go around each class and give one to each teacher. There was one teacher who would wash the sweet, if it wasn’t in paper, under the tap in the class basin.

One day between home and school I saw my first dead person. Purple curtains covered the windows of the house and a black frill over the door. The dead usually remained at home for three days before being buried. Those houses had no gardens in front. The door opened straight onto the footpath. I was fascinated and pulled myself up to peer through a crack in the curtains where an old man lay in a coffin on a table in the middle of the room. His hands were folded, coins on his eyes and his hair was white. When I told my catholic friend across the road she said that his soul had gone to heaven. My father said he’ll be eaten by worms and in time become dust. We will all be dust one day and there is no heaven. Since I was to be an atheist and knew there was no God, I did believe fervently in small gnomes and fairies. The gnomes were about one third the size of Bilbo Baggins and

lived in similar villages under trees in the woods. They wore red pointy hats and were helpful to humans. We played in the street. Cars were rare. We played marbles, hopscotch, ball games against the walls, skipping ropes and tops. Running up and down the street bashing a hoop (an old bicycle wheel) with a stick. In summers there was a swimming pool, in winter skating. Apart from skating on the frozen streams or canals there was also a skating rink. This was a large field which in winter was covered with water and frozen. It blared out music and one could buy hot drinks. The outer side of the rink was for fast or slow skating the inside rink for figure skating. I didn’t go there a lot because one had to pay. But when I did go I would zoom around and around for hours. My skates were made from wood with a steel blade and straps which tied onto my shoes. Last time I was in Holland I saw a pair in an antique shop. I remember walking home after having skated for hours, with painful feet.

Commemorative Service (dodenherdenking)

On Saturday 2 May the NAQ hosted a Commemorative Service (dodenherdenking) for the victims of WW2. A select group of members and dignitaries attended the ceremony. This included Milton Dick, our official Patron and speaker of the House in Canberra,

Ms Margie Nightingale, local representative in the Qld Parliament, Ms Marjon Wind, the Dutch Honorary Consul for Qld, and former Qld Consul Kasper Kuiper.

The Master of Ceremony, Mr Vince Scheenhouwer (C.O.M.) addressed the audience and introduced the official speakers listed above. After the

wreath laying and the candlelight ceremonies the Dutch and Australian national anthems were sung, which ended the ceremony.

We thank the NAQ Dutch Club and all participants for a meaningful commemoration.

These days we use a lot of plastic. Especially in our kitchens where we have plastic storage containers in all sizes and shapes. We also have a lot of soft plastic in our kitchens, think of the wraps in which fruit and veg come from the shop, and the very useful glad wrap. Other goods we buy are also often wrapped in plastics. We tend to throw these soft plastics out in the garbage, often immediately upon unpacking our purchases, or sometimes after reusing the bread wrapper a few times. Since a few years there is also the possibility to take the plastic bags back to the store and deposit them in a collection bin. However, this collection scheme is not working well as the places where the plastics are taken too are not recycling them at the moment.

So what now?

A new invention has come out of the University of Sydney, where Dr Len Humphreys and Prof. Thomas Maschmeyer originated a process for which

they have global patents to turn plastic back into oil, and biomass (plant waste) into fuels. They have set up a company, Licella, which is also working on a factory in north Queensland to turn sugar cane waste into biocrude, which can be made into aviation fuel.

The original motivation was to reduce waste, but in these times of limited supply due to the blockades at the Strait of Hormuz, this new method to increase our supply of oil is very timely. It will not decrease carbon dioxide emissions, but it surely will decrease the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our oceans and our food chain.

So we can continue to take our plastic bags to the recycle bins at the shops.

My passion is yoga

Gewoon lachen tijdens een yogales gebeurt eigenlijk niet zo vaak. Het voelt vaak best serieus allemaal. Terwijl nergens staat dat het zo serieus móét zijn. Tegenwoordig heb je in Australië zelfs laughter yoga, waarbij je expres gaat lachen — ook als je er eigenlijk niet echt om kunt lachen.

En gek genoeg werkt dat: door dat ‘neplachen’ komen er stofjes vrij waardoor je je uiteindelijk beter gaat voelen dan vóór de les. Daarnaast is het ook nog eens goed voor je buikspieren, want bij lachen span je die automatisch aan.

Laatst gaf ik les bij de bowls club. Precies op de dag dat ik geboekt was voor een open dag, bleek er ook een jazzband te spelen. Niet meteen de muziek waarbij je denkt: “hier ga ik lekker zen op worden.”

Maar ja… niet voor één gat te vangen, dus we besloten het gewoon te proberen. En wat klonk daar?

“Smile… baby, smile…”

En ja hoor, daar werden we meteen aan herinnerd.

Smile, baby, smile… heerlijk, zo’n glimlach op je gezicht.

Heerlijk, die gelukshormonen die beginnen te stromen.

Heerlijk, die beweging en die totaal andere ervaring door de jazzmuziek.

Dus ja… moraal van het verhaal: als er niets te lachen valt, lach dan gewoon even alsof — en kijk wat er gebeurt.

Wil je lichter in het leven staan? Word je dan bewust wat de kracht van loslaten is.

De kracht van loslaten en hoe het herfst seizoen ons immuunsysteem kan ondersteunen. We zijn inmiddels halverwege de herst en zodra de dagen korter worden en de eerste blaadjes van de bomen vallen, begint er meer te veranderen in ons leven dan alleen het landschap. De herfst nodigt ons uit om naar binnen te keren, te vertragen en los te laten. Dit natuurlijke ritme heeft niet alleen invloed op onze stemming, maar speelt ook een subtiele rol in het ondersteunen van ons immuunsysteem.

In de zomer leven we vaak naar buiten gericht: lange dagen, sociale activiteiten en een hogere energie. Met de komst van de herfst verandert dit tempo. De natuur trekt zich terug, en datzelfde gebeurt — bewust of onbewust — ook in ons lichaam. Deze overgang is geen zwakte, maar juist een uitnodiging tot herstel en rust. Ons immuunsysteem is nauw verbonden met hoe we leven. Stress, overprikkeling en voortdurende activiteit kunnen het verzwakken. De herfst biedt een tegenbeweging: rust, reflectie en verstilling. Door deze kwaliteiten te omarmen, geven we ons lichaam de kans om te herstellen en opnieuw in balans te komen.

Het proces van loslaten is hier-

in essentieel. Net zoals bomen hun bladeren laten vallen om energie te besparen voor de winter, kunnen wij oude spanningen, patronen en emoties loslaten. Dit heeft niet alleen een mentaal en emotioneel effect, maar werkt ook door op fysiek niveau. Wanneer we vasthouden aan stress of onverwerkte ervaringen, blijft ons lichaam in een staat van alertheid. Loslaten helpt het zenuwstelsel te kalmeren, wat een directe positieve invloed heeft op onze weerstand. Bewust ademhalen of meditatie kan helpen om spanning los te laten en het lichaam te ondersteunen. Kleine veranderingen kunnen hierin een groot verschil maken. Daarnaast is het belangrijk om te luisteren naar de signalen van het lichaam. Vermoeidheid, behoefte aan warmte of stilte zijn geen tekenen dat we “achterlopen”, maar juist dat ons systeem vraagt om zorg en aandacht. Door mee te bewegen met de seizoenen, in plaats van ertegenin te gaan, versterken we onze natuurlijke veerkracht.

De herfst leert ons dat loslaten geen verlies is, maar ruimte schept — ruimte voor herstel, voor rust en voor een sterker immuunsysteem.

NETHERLANDER’S INFLUENCE AT THE COURT OF IVAN THE TERRIBLE.

In the middle of the seventeenth century, the VOC was expanding its great empire of trade and it was doing so in the foreign quarter of Moscow. Before this time, the English had been instrumental in being the first foreigners to teach the Russians industrial techniques and had been welcomed at the court of Ivan the Terrible.

However the Dutch, with their gift for learning many tongues, fluently, displaced the pompous English and became the most important foreign group in commerce and manufacturing. They even managed to open their own glass, paper and textile plants in Russia. That should have come easily, as they were the only ones to be allowed to trade in Japan, when the Tokugawa shoguns closed all borders to everyone, but the Dutch, in their Closed Regime for 200 years.

However, in the 1570s, thirty years before the VOC,

there was a most charismatic Netherlander of the name of Eliseus Bomelius who singlehandedly sought to fight off, not only the influence of the English traders, but Ivan’s own Russian princes (known as the ‘boyars’).

Eliseus Bomelius, born in Bommel, the Netherlands was the son of a Lutheran preacher. He was also a physician and astrologer and was brought up in England and educated at the University of Cambridge. He was initially welcomed, with open arms, by the English Protestant reformers. His religion, he claimed, was Humanism, rather than any established faith. (Humanism was practised by Thomas More and Erasmus and it is the value and agency of human beings and it espouses critical thinking and evaluation over doctrine or faith). He even, at one time, is said to have consulted with Queen Elizabeth’s advisor, Sir William Cecil, on how many more years Elizabeth would live.

However, Eliseus was always somewhat of a ‘maverick’, eventually ‘falling foul’ of the President of the London College of Physicians, for ‘quackery’ (i.e. practising medicine without a licence).

Even though imprisoned in the King’s Bench prison, he still corresponded with Cecil, in the hope of creating suspicion about the President and the London College of Physicians and talking openly about a conspiracy and danger hanging over England. Eventually even Cecil grew tired of him and welcomed the opportunity of getting rid of Bomelius to Russia, as there was an Ambassador from

Muscovy visiting at the time.

As soon as Eliseus reached the court of Ivan the Terrible, he quickly gained his favour, as the paranoid Tsar, unlike the English, was only too ready to listen to his tales of the disloyalty of his boyars and nobles.

As Bomelius was also a proficient brewer of poisons and a skilled alchemist, Ivan was willing to use him against any, he believed, were guilty of treason.

When Ivan had first met Bomelius, the Tsar had been resting from all his executions and revenge purges. The Netherlander was not impressed. He urged Ivan to continue in his ‘rigid cleansing’ of his stubborn subjects. You still ‘have many enemies among the boyars, the high clergy and even the people”. “The weed is growing back and spreading” intoned the zealous Netherlander. The ‘learned doctor’ reawoke Ivan’s slumbering suspicions and obsessive paranoia which had, for a time, begun to doze off. The Tsar enthusiastically agreed that “Russia was sick-- and nothing could equal a good purge to make the body healthy again”

To make matters easier for Bomelius, the English were not Ivan’s ‘flavour of the month’ at this time, as they had not been able to persuade their English Queen that Ivan of Russia would be a wonderful husband, as Ivan was passionately in love with the Virgin Queen, who was in her prime at this time - and he had convinced himself that England and Russia should be allied with two great enigmatic leaders in a power bloc. Elizabeth had heard plenty from her English merchant

adventurers and was certainly not overjoyed at the prospect of being the Tsar’s fourth wife, even though Ivan protested that there was no problem at all in annulling his third marriage, as, naturally, he controlled the Orthodox Church. Elizabeth had to be careful, nonetheless, as the Tsar had granted England plenteous and generous concessions of trade. She, therefore, could not bluntly refuse him, so decided to stall, ‘playing for time’ and sending many envoys to the Russian court, impressing upon him that he could always find asylum, against, his enemies, ‘at his own expense of course’. Hoping to flatter the egotistical Ivan, the English envoys came dressed in Russian garb. To Ivan’s disappointment, there was no mention of his pompous dream of the merging of Russia with England. Nevertheless there was a veritable inundation of trade talk, always more to the benefit of England. The Tsar became incensed and the envoys took the first vessel they could from Russia and fled for their lives.

Eliseus was overjoyed. He even persuaded Ivan to persist in his project of marrying Elizabeth the First, because he said he had proof that the

Cecil, Elizabeth’s counsellor, had been advised by his English spy, Sir Jerome Horsey that Eliseus Bomelius is now ‘an enemy of England’. The master courtier had not trusted Bomelius, even though the physician had promised to send Cecil political information about the court of the Tsar.

The crafty Dutchman now installed as Ivan’s First Minister, was able to send princes, ministers, noblemen and even the feared ‘oprichniki’ (Ivan’s secret police, a sort of 16th century KGB) to their deaths, as the Tsar believed his every word of conspiracy, disloyalty and even alleged incompetence.

They were, either executed publicly, or dispatched summarily, courtesy of Bomelius’ skill in brewing poisons. However, when Eliseus, four years later, decided to leave Russia, ‘lining his pockets with gold’, he only managed to reach Pskov, where he was arrested and taken back to the court. Now the boyars and the Oprichniki got their own back and accused the wretched doctor of conspiring with the Kings of Poland and Sweden. Thereupon he was stretched

Bill en Annemarie

Het is alweer 15 jaar geleden toen ik Annemarie voor Dutch TV voor de camera had. Ze was toen net verhuist voor haar vroegere liefde Bill.

Annemarie liet twee volwassen kinderen in Nederland achter en haar keus werd niet altijd in dank afgenomen. Nu jaren later is dat gelukkig voorbij. De tijd heelt inderdaad de wonden.

In plaats van werken bij de supermarkt in Nederland werken Bil en Annemarie heel hard aan hun schildersbedrijf. Ze hebben het bedrijf Touch of Dutch painters genoemd, aangezien ze ook echt trots zijn op hun Nederlandse roots. En de oranje overallen op de foto zijn een nieuwe aanwinst . Ook zijn de Nederlandse eigenschappen van grondigheid en op tijd zijn een goede verkoop techniek voor het koppel. Mensen spreken dit ook vaak uit zegt Annemarie. De meeste mensen waar ze verven vinden het ook leuk om gewoon met het koppel te praten. Zo ook bij mij thuis, maar inder-

daad het is nooit ten koste van het resultaat of van de uren. Ze blijven gewoon bezig met verven ook al zit je tegen ze aan te kletsen. Wat mij echt opviel is dat je eigenlijk de verf helemaal niet ruikt. Je kan gewoon in de geverfde kamer blijven werken. Leuk hoor om gewoon even gezellig ook Nederlands te kletsen.

For me, visiting and Zinging at this exhibition event was a flashback to the 1980s. That’s when my family bought a flower shop called Big Bunches – because the two florists were dying of AIDS.

So many flower growers came to their rescue. Including Kees and Sheila Tesselaar.

They weren’t just Dutch migrants. They were bridges to a time when compassion and di-

versity celebrated the very best of us.

The day itself:

We started “zinging” (singing with spirit) at 10 am and sang until 1 pm, with twenty-minute breaks.

It rained cats and dogs. But that didn’t stop the estimated 2,350 visitors.

Outside, umbrellas bobbed as long queues waited for bitterballen, croquettes, and poffertjes. Totally worth it.

And in the air? You could feel

the whispers of ancient ancestors – from the 1606 landing at Cape York to the waves of 1950s migrants. Guiding us all toward connection.

Our Dutch ancestors had mapped three-quarters of Australia (including Tasmania) by 1648. That day, we added our own small chapter.

Social Media ban in Australië voor onder 16

Een kleine rondvraag onder de jongeren onder 15 die ik ken maakt duidelijk dat hun social media eigenlijk niet weg is. Het is er nog. En gelukkig maar vinden ze. Want snap chat bijvoorbeeld is de manier voor hun om elkaar te kunnen contacten. Daarmee spreken ze af en houden ze contact. Snap chat is eigenlijk net als whats app. Gewoon een manier om berichten te sturen. Vooral dus ook aan mensen die ze kennen. Als een ouder vind ik het wel fijn dat er nu regels zijn. Als je dus nu vindt dat je kind te-

veel op social media is kan je er wat van zeggen. Een paar jaar geleden keek je tiener je aan alsof ze water zagen branden. Hoezo mag ik geen social media? Duh je bent zo niet van deze tijd. Deze tijd geeft juist aan dat social media verslavend is. We moeten er rekening mee houden dat als het verboden wordt dat je een verslaafde reactie terug krijgt. Hoe stop je een verslaving? Kijk dat is dus de vraag. Wie heeft daar een antwoord op.

Zaterdagavond bleef mijn rechter grote teen hangen in mijn linker broekspijp.

Ik struikelde.

In mijn poging om niet te vallen, hoorde ik een krakend geluid in mijn heup.

Ik heb liggen gillen van de pijn.

Toen ik uiteindelijk weer overeind kwam voelde het gek in mijn heup.

Was mijn been nou langer?

De pijn was verlammend.

Pezen opgerekt, of stuk? Heup uit de kom, of subluxatie?

Na een slapenloze nacht strompelde ik zondag op pijnstillers door het huis en bij de verjaardagslunch van mijn mams.

Blijven lachen en kletsen, drukdrukdruk, dan is er geen pijn. Ofzo.

Toen ik mij ‘s avonds voorzichtig probeerde om te draaien in bed, voelde ik “klak” in mijn heup.

Ik kon weer iets beter bewegen.

Gelukkig lees ik nu pas dat ik eigenlijk naar de Eerste Hulp had gemoeten. Oeps.

A chronicler from Pskov described Bomelius many years after as A ferocious magician who completely turned the Tsar away from the faith, made him hate the Russian people and caused him to love foreigners.

It is interesting to note that no Englishman or Dutchman ever again held a position at the court of Ivan the Terrible.

They had to wait until the seventeenth century when Tsar Michael, who founded the Romanov dynasty and reigned from 1613 to 1645, again started to welcome western European traders to Russia. Nevertheless the Russian people always hated any foreign influence to the Russias. They ‘looted their houses when they dared and jeered at them in the streets’. This caused the English to abandon their dreams of trade with the Russians. However

Koningsdagen - door het hele land

Overal in Australie werden er Koningsdagen en nachten georganiseerd in Australie.

Van het hele land zagen we mooie oranje foto’s. Ook de Dutch Courier was aanwezig op de familie dag in Melbourne. Echt zo’n fijn integenerationeel feest met heel jong en oud aanwezig.

De DJ die de avond ervoor ook iedereen op de dansvloer kreeg was speciaal voor deze 2 dagen overgekomen uit Nederland. Hij had al een ander jaark een evenement gedraaid voor Dutchies travel en wilde graag weer over komen voor dit speciale feest in Melbourne.

Verder was een markt wat heerlijk leek op een vrij markt in Nederland en kroketten, kaassoufles werden door iedereen gewaardeerd. Evenals de ijsboer die speciaal voor deze dag caramel en liquou-

rice smaak had. Een nieuwe Nederlandse ondernemer in Melbourne. Echt een aanra der.

Verder zag ik op tv dat Willem Alexander en Maxima en fa milie in Dokkum waren.

De plek waar Willem Allexander ook was tijdens een elf steden tocht die hij heeft gereden. Er was dus ook heel veel aan dacht voor dat evenement. En dat bleef als een soort van rode draad door de dag. De stempelkaart van het doen van allerlei activiteiten. Het zag er echt top uit alle maal.

Ook zo bijzonder dat Maxima inderdaad haar hakken uitdeed en de schaatsen onderbond en dan zo in haar jurk het ijs opging. Ook moesten ze zinnen Fries uitspreken. Dat deden ze ook zo goed, dus ik neem aan dat daar op geoefend was.

At home Mum made me put my feet into a bowl with lukewarm water until they slowly defrosted. Skating on frozen streams or canals was also fun but we had to be careful of cracked ice. On both ends of our streets was water. Today they and hundreds of other creeks, canals, streams in the cities have been filled in. On one end of our street were fields where in summer we played and picked bunches of buttercups to take home. I don’t know who owned the fields but no one ever bothered us. The fields were separated by creeks. We would jump from one side of the creeks to the other with the help of a long pole stuck in the middle. We’d take a run and jump sticking the pole into the water to get to the other side. I fell in twice when the pole got stuck. I was a good swimmer and the last summer in Holland I regularly met some kids from school to swim in a large canal. It joined the Rhine. Now I shudder at the thought of how we swam to an approaching boat, climbed on the side and sprang off again when the owner shouted and ran towards us. Those boats were long and low to the water with a boathouse at the end.

She said that I deserved it. Our apartment consisted of three levels. Two floors and a large attic room on the third floor, which led out to a balcony and was level with the roof of the whole block. That room was mainly used for storage and hiding my father under the floor during the last years of the war.

When I was three my mother bought a dog and gave him an English name, Terry. We only had him for a short while before he fell off the roof during the night into the street below. My father with a spade and a bag and me in tow picked up Terry who was stiff as a board, lifted him in the bag and we headed for a canal nearby to bury him. But the bag had a hole in it and Terry slid out. My father laughed while my mother looking down from a window, cried.

The first floor had a landing with a kitchen on one end and on the other end a small room where I slept. The steps which lead below to the street had no railing on the landing. It worried my grandfather but my parents said I would have to learn. Consequently I fell down fifteen steps twice and lived.

Next to the kitchen was a toilet. In the middle were two large rooms. One was my parents bedroom and the other a living room with a black pot-belly stove. The second floor had a similar set up where my grandparents lived. But instead of a toilet there was a small room with a large square basin. I remember Mum doing the washing in there during and after the war. Before the war, washing was collected weekly by I assume commercial laundries. One day my mother was washing with a large cake of yellow soap. My mother’s brother Jaap had brought us

a box of black market soap. I was probably hungry, grabbed the soap, took a bite and said, ‘lekker, koek.’ Yummy cake. I must have swallowed it because I vomited almost immediately. The taste of soap still makes me sick. We had no bathroom and only one toilet. My grandparents had a large pot in their bedroom. The rule was, my mother’s rule, that every morning one washed face, neck, arms and hands and bottom front and back. At the end of the street was a public bathhouse where Mum used to take me once a week to shower and wash our hair. When I got older I was given a towel, soap and money to go and have my weekly clean. I have asked my mother why she and my father didn’t rent an apartment with a bathroom? Mum didn’t want to talk about that. Not having a bathroom was something best be forgotten. Obviously they couldn’t afford it. Obviously thousands of city dwellings were built without bathrooms. When I’m in Utrecht and gaze at my old home which I’m told is chock full of students. I wonder if they have a bathroom now.

Six Dutch nationals held in world’s biggest single cocaine bust

Six Dutch nationals are among 23 people remanded in custody after Spanish authorities confirmed that a cargo ship intercepted off the Canary Islands last week was carrying more than 30 tonnes of cocaine. It is the largest single shipment ever seized, according to Spain’s top criminal court.

In a judicial order on Wednesday, the court said the Comoros-flagged Arconian, boarded by state police on May 1, was loaded with 1,279 bales of cocaine weighing 30,215 kilos and worth an estimated street value of €812 million.

The figure is lower than the 35 to 50 tonnes the Spanish police union AUGC had been quoting earlier this week, but still more than double Spain’s previous record of 13 tonnes seized at the port of Algeciras in 2024.

It also dwarfs the biggest cocaine haul ever made in the Netherlands, when 8,064 kilos was found in a banana shipment at Rotterdam port in July 2023.

Firework bomb

A firework bomb has been thrown through the letterbox of D66’s headquarters in The Hague, triggering an explosion. The fire brigade was called shortly after 9pm on Thursday.

A suspect has been arrested, the police reported. No motive has yet been established.

Members of the progressive liberal party’s youth wing were inside when it happened but no one was injured. “They were, however, terrified,” a D66 spokesperson told broadcaster NOS.

Dutch flag carrier KLM has scrapped 160 European flights to and from Schiphol airport in the coming month because they would not be “financially-viable” due to rising kerosene prices. Passengers already booked on the flights will be offered an alternative on the next available flight, KLM said.

The scrapped flights are all to cities such as London and Dusseldorf, where KLM flies several times a day, so there

are plenty of alternatives, the airline said. In total, 1% of the airline’s European flights will be affected.

Charity shop staff find first edition of Anne Frank’s diary April 23, 2026

A valuable first edition of Anne Frank’s diary Het Achterhuis (The Secret Annex) found by staff at a charity shop in Eemnes in Utrecht earlier this week will be auctioned in May.

Koen Samson, of auction house Van Spengen, said he couldn’t believe his eyes when charity shop volunteers showed him the find. “This is very special indeed. The first edition of Anne Frank’s diary dates from 1947 and consisted of 3,000 copies, so every time you find one in very good condition is a red-letter day. And this one is in excellent condition!,” he told NH Nieuws.

The back of the book shows a slight discoloration, and the dust jacket is missing but it is otherwise perfect, Samson said.

He praised the member of staff who spotted the book. “He didn’t just see that the book was in good condition but also realised that 1947 was the year in which it was first published. You have to have a good eye to be able to do that,” he said.

Potential buyers can view the book between May 7 and May 10, ahead of the auction, which will take place between May 11 and May 13.

The book is expected to fetch between €3,000 and €16,000, which will be spent on charitable projects.

This is not the first time a first edition of Anne Frank’s diary was discovered in a charity shop. In 2025, a charity shop find was sold for €16,500 to an undisclosed buyer by auction house Vendu in Rotterdam. In the same year, volunteers at charity shops in Friesland spotted two first editions, one of which was sold on online auction website Marktplaats for €3,550.

The Netherlands faces an increasingly unstable and unpredictable world order as well as rising extremism at home, the Dutch domestic intelligence service AIVD has warned in its 2025 annual report.

The threat to national security

has not come from so many directions and for so long since the founding of the AIVD after World War II, AIVD director Simone Smit said at the presentation.

Russian hackers carried out cyberattacks on the Dutch police and on the Signal and WhatsApp accounts of senior officials and military personnel. At the same time, the report says, the Kremlin has been portraying European freedoms as perverted and threatening, and attempting to undermine unity within and between European countries.

China also poses a growing threat. Despite being welcomed as a trading partner, China has “for years been covertly and illegally attempting to acquire knowledge from Dutch companies and research institutions, and that threat both broadened and deepened in 2025”, Smit said.

Both countries are part of a broader pattern, the AIVD argues, in which several states – including Iran and North Korea – are seeking to expand their power and reshape the world order in line with their autocratic ideologies.

Terrorism in the Netherlands On the domestic front,

The AIVD says it believes it has once again prevented jihadist attacks. The service issued at least 11 official intelligence reports leading to arrests by police last year. Six of those arrested were under the age of 24.

The report also focuses on the continued rise of the “sovereign citizen” movement, a group of people who believe an evil elite want to take over the country, and who regard immigration as a way of further pressuring the general population.

“But behind the scenes, extreme right-wing groups are striving for a white ethno-state. A good illustration of this is the use of the word ‘remigration’ which has come to mean the mass departure of people with ethnic minority roots from Europe.”

The term is popular with politicians from the far-right Forum voor Democratie, which has seven MPs and won 299 seats in roughly 100 local council areas in the March elections. Several Forum councillors are known to have links with extremist groups.

Hackers stole personal data belonging to almost all of the 32,000 residents of the Dutch town of Epe in a cyberattack on a council server last month, local authorities have confirmed.

Names, addresses, dates of birth, places of birth and citizen service (BSN) numbers were taken for nearly every resident. Contact details and bank account numbers were also stolen from some, along with copies of at least 1,000 identity documents.

Those affected can replace their passport, ID card and driving licence free of charge, the council said. Residents whose ID copies were taken will receive a separate letter by 8 May.

No ransom demand has been made and the stolen data has not yet appeared on the dark web, mayor Tom Horn said. Police are investigating.

“People call it a leak, but it is theft,” Horn told broadcaster NOS, calling the breach a serious crime. “As a council, we are supposed to look after residents’ data properly and we take that seriously. Unfortunately, it has still gone wrong.”

Server used for submissions

The compromised server had been used since 2022 to collect documents submitted by residents – for example when making applications or lodging objections – before they were moved into the main system. No DigiD login details or passwords were taken, the council said.

The breach adds to a string of large-scale hacks affecting the Netherlands this year. Travel site Booking.com warned customers of a reservation data breach last week, and medical software firm Chipsoft confirmed earlier in April that patient data had been stolen in a ransomware attack on its systems.

A mass claim was also launched last week against telecoms provider Odido, whose February hack exposed personal data on 6.2 million people.

Plans to compensate households and small firms for higher energy prices have won broad support in parliament, including the GroenLinks-PvdA suggestion of a cheap temporary train ticket.

Prime minister Rob Jetten told MPs during Wednesday’s debate that the GroenLinksPvdA plan for a €49, off-peak three-month season ticket could count on his backing. “We aim to introduce this before the summer,” Jetten told MPs.People who need to travel by train during peak periods will be able to claim 25 cents per kilometre in tax-free travel expenses, compared with the current 23 cents the cabinet earlier this week.

Wat weten we eigenlijk over ‘ons’ wentelteefje? Zou het soms ‘wentel ’t even’ betekenen?

In 1623 is het woord ‘wentelteefje’ voor het eerst aangetroffen in een boek van A. van de Venne: “Ick backte wentel-teven Van suyckert witte broot, en butter-smeerigh vet.” Pas in 1811 werd het woord ‘wentelteef’ voor het eerst vermeld in een woordenboek. Uit oude recepten blijkt dat men behalve (oud) witbrood ook wel beschuit gebruikte. Er werd van alles toegevoegd zoals: citroenschil, saffraan, rum, vanille en zelfs rozenwater (heerlijk geurend water wat gedistilleerd werd uit rozenbladeren).

Wat weten we nog meer?

Dat het woord ‘wentelteefje’ ook overdrachtelijk werd gebruikt. In een boek in 1717 stond: ‘wat een mondje, wat voor oogjes, wat voor tandjes (..) Zo’n wentelteefje zou me smaken. We zien nu, in de hedendaagse taal, dat het woord ‘wentelteefje’ ook als koosnaampje wordt gebruikt.

Ook bekend in het buitenland?

Jazeker! Wanneer we dicht bij huis kijken, zien we dat de Fransen het ‘pain perdu’ noemen. In Vlaanderen wordt het ook wel ‘verloren brood’ genoemd. Wil je in Kortrijk een wentelteefje bestellen? Dan zul je op de menukaart moeten zoeken naar: een ‘Klakker’ of een ‘Klakkaard’.

Een vintage wentelteefjes recept voor 2 personen:

Wat heb je nodig?

2 appels

1/4 theelepel kaneel

1 eetlepel suiker

1 ei

100 ml melk scheutje water

4 boterhammen

En hoe ga je het doen?

schil de appels en snijd de appels in kleine blokjes.

Giet een scheutje water in een pannetje, samen met de stukjes appel, het suiker en kaneel. Laat dit nu circa 15 minuten pruttelen.

Vergeet niet af en toe te roeren en soms een scheutje water toe te voegen, wanneer het water opgelost is.

Meng ondertussen het ei met de melk en voeg eventueel nog een beetje kaneel toe.

Snijd de korstjes van de boterhammen.

Circa 5-6 minuten voordat de appelstukjes klaar zijn, doop de boterhammen in het ei-mengsel aan beide kanten.

Doe een beetje boter in een koekenpan en bak de wentelteefjes aan beide kanten circa 3 minuten totdat ze aan beide kanten een beetje gekleurd zijn.

Schep het appelmengsel op het wentelteefje en doe er nog een wentelteefje bovenop en smullen maar!

Bereidingstijd: 20-25 min.

Ik hing als klein meisje altijd al aan de lippen van mijn grootouders wanneer zij vertelden over hun leven vroeger. Naarmate ik ouder werd ontstond de passie om te schrijven over de jaren dertig tot begin jaren negentig. De columns die ik daarover schrijf zijn te lezen in TrosKompas, op mijn website en in mijn boeken: ‘Pure nostalgie’ en ‘Meer nostalgie’ en ‘Nederland bevrijd’. Wat was het een eer om te mogen schrijven over Nederland en Nederlands-Indië ten tijde en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Sad to hear from the passing of Jan de Jonge.

Years Jan de Jonge showed us pictures about ships and wrote in the Dutch Courier paper about ships who were docking in Australia.

The details we got and his enthousiasm will be remembered for ever. Even more now when I see a boat in the haven and I recognise it.

I am like. ‘Oh Jan wrote about this one. ‘

Jan’s little chats on events of the Dutch community will be missed.

We do send our love to Jan’s family and friends.

Irene Kern

Irene was de beheerder van de Facebookpagina Vrouwen in het buitenland. Voor velen was zij een grote steun en toeverlaat, bijna als een moederfiguur voor vrouwen in het buitenland. Dat blijkt ook uit de vele berichten op de pagina en de verbazing over hoe snel het is gegaan. Ze schreef vrijwel dagelijks berichten waarin ze deelde hoe het met haar ging. Ook haar strijd met haar gezondheid bleef daarbij niet onbesproken. Irene plaatste niet alleen berichten op de pagina, maar had ook persoonlijk contact via aparte chats met mensen die ze vaak nooit in het echt had ontmoet. Toch betekende deze digitale betrokkenheid ontzettend veel voor velen.

Jan en Gerard waren al een paar maanden eerder de grote bergen in geweest en ze stelden voor dat we op hun motorfietsen met z’n drieën een weekend naar Lake Sumner zouden gaan. Dit was een groot meer met helder water, ver in de heuvels zo’n 160 kilometer ten noorden van Christchurch. We reden door groene weilanden met schapen. Ik had nog nooit land gezien dat zo mooi en kleurrijk is en met een gevoel van rust en stilte. Het meer was ongerept, geen rimpel op het water en het leek erop dat hier nooit eerder mensen waren geweest. vóór ons. Overal om ons heen hoge heuvels met graspollen en in de verte de hoge bergen. Terugblik april

In onze serie ‘De JvO: Migrantenverhalen’ halen Dutch-Australians herinneringen op aan hun reis met het migrantenschip Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. Op 2 juli 1953, liet de 24-jarige Jannetje Nieuwenhuis Nederland achter zich om samen met haar man Jan een gezin te stichten in Australië. Jannetje (97) deelde haar herinneringen aan de JvO met ons. Zo vertelde ze o.a. dat ze dat ze haar schone was in de gaten moest houden als het te drogen hing, omdat het anders meegenomen werd.

Waarom voelen pubers en jonge mannen zich aangetrokken tot de manosfeer? Hoe ga je hier als ouders mee om en welk effect heeft de beweging op tienermeiden en vrouwen? We vroegen het aan mediapedagoog Jacqueline Kleijer, die gespecialiseerd is op het gebied van online identiteit, sexualiteit en beïnvloeding.

Op 28 maart 1887 explodeerde een mijn in Bulli (NSW), in de buurt van Wollongong. Daarbij kwamen 81 man-

eerste nacht onder de sterren in ons nieuwe land. De mannen hadden een tent en ik hing een hangmat tussen twee bomen. ‘s Nachts hoorden we het geluid van wilde zwijnen die in de buurt aan het foerageren waren, maar ‘s ochtends was er geen spoor meer van te bekennen. De ervaring van een weekendje weg en het verkennen van het land wekte in mij een verlangen naar meer avonturen. In de volgende 8 jaren ging ik konijnenjagen in Dunsandel, herten besluipen in het Lewis Pass-gebied en de Cannibal Gorge, en paradijseenden jagen in Murchison met mijn vriend Neil Hayton. Hij leerde me ook goud zoeken en vele jaren later werden mijn goudstof, deeltjes en korrels omgesmolten voor onze gouden huwelijksverjaardag, voor oorbeltjes en een

broche voor Mary. ‘s Nachts met onze .303s op herten jagen in de Buller Gorge vereiste precisie en vaardigheid, en geroosterd hertenvlees van de barbecue was heerlijk. Later ging ik in de weekenden ‘zoeken reddingsoefeningen’ doen in de heuvels bij Blenheim. We gingen vaak op varkensjacht in Noord-Canterbury. De varkens waren in 1769 door kapitein Cook naar het gebied gebracht en losgelaten, en werden daarom ‘Captain Cookers’ genoemd. Ze staan bekend als gevaarlijk, fel en agressief.

Joost en Stans stelden me voor aan Bryan en Madelein Reid, die me altijd welkom maakten in hun huis op de heuvel in Sumner. Ze zijn levenslang vrienden gebleven. Ze waren allebei geweldige gesprekspartners en vertelden me veel over het leven

nen en jongens om het leven. Historica Ingeborg van Teeseling vertelt in ons programma wat er precies gebeurde die dag en dat 15 jaar later, in dezelfde regio, nog een groot mijnongeluk plaatsvond.

Het was bij hen thuis, en dankzij hun vriendschap, dat ik drie jonge Nieuw-Zeelandse mannen leerde kennen die erg geïnteresseerd waren in het verkennen van het achterland en al snel werden we goede vrienden. We genoten ervan om in het weekend op pad te gaan of te klimmen in

de hogere bergen in de verte. Bryan, Malcolm, Mike, Dave en ik vormden een duurzame vriendschap. Bryan was een subredacteur bij de Christchurch Star-Sun Krant en de anderen studeerden voor school leraren, terwijl ik een vak volgde op de Universiteit. Nadat mijn oorspronkelijke emigratiecontract was afgelopen, werd ik buschauffeur in Christchurch en later more on page 21

Elke maand bespreken wij in het kort een boek dat is toegevoegd aan het bestand van Nederlandstalige boeken in de Dutch Club “Mies” bibliotheek, 99 Loftus Street, Leederville, Perth, WA.

De comfortabele routine van Olivier, professor in de kunstgeschiedenis aan de Sorbonne, raakt ontwricht wanneer zijn baas hem vraagt om als mentor van een uitwisselingsstudente op te treden. De stugge Nederlandse rakelt een geschiedenis op die Olivier had willen vergeten, maar die tegelijk het kostbaarste is dat hij bezit. Tegen beter weten in zoekt hij toenadering tot de studente, en geeft haar een advies dat hij zelf nooit heeft opgevolgd. Maar Fie heeft haar eigen leven. Zij worstelt met een onmogelijke keuze: streven naar het allerhoogste, en eraan kapot gaan of nooit beginnen om niet tefalen. Ze voert koppig verzet tegen haar eigen levensangst en daagt Olivier uit hetzelfde te doen. De hemel boven Parijs gaat over de leugens die wij voor onszelf bedenken om niet te hoeven doen wat we het meest verlangen. Bovendien is het een van de meest opvallende liefdesverhalen van de Nederlandse literatuur van nu, en een betoverende entree van een jonge auteur.

Wat een juweel van een boek vond ik dit. Heen en weer ge-

slingerd worden door emoties en situaties. De spanning bouwde zich op zonder dat ik wist, of aanvoelde waar dit verhaal uiteindelijk heen zou gaan. En net zoals Jaap Robben in de huid kroop van een vrouw in Schemerleven (Boekhoek Neerlandia Magazine April 2026), vind ik het zo fascinerend hoe, in dit geval, een vrouw zich zo in de gevoelswereld van een man kan inleven. Weer een parel van een boek toegevoegd aan het bestand van de Mies

Bibliotheek.

verkoop vertegenwoordiger voor een elektrotechnisch bedrijf dat reizen over het hele Zuidereiland mogelijk maakte. Mijn vrienden wisten veel over hun land en wilden graag naar die moeilijke, maar opwindende plaatsen in de mysterieuze bergen en valleien. In de winter gingen we schaatsen op het Ida meer en skiën in Temple Basin bij Arthurs Pass. Een snelle trein daarheen was gemakkelijk vervoer en die ging door twee tunnels die verbonden waren door een ijzeren spoorbrug, roze geverfd om roesten te voorkomen. Van hier kon men de Waimakariri rivier zien stromen door een diepe kloof beneden.

Ik wist niet dat deze brug in een later avontuur een baken zou worden. Eén van onze meest interesante reizen duurde twee weken, toen we over de Whitehorne- en Mungo Pas gingen, over de berg scheidingslijn naar de Westkust. Dit was een tocht van uithoudingsvermogen door rivier-

valleien over heuvels en door bergpassen.

Vele andere reizen volgden in de loop van de jaren, zoals het verkennen van de Godley rivier vallei en naar de bron van de Rakaia rivier en Mt. Arrowsmith en later naar het Queenstown gebied en de vallei van de Rees waar Mt. Earnslaw Peak avonturiers aantrok.

In het Athurs Pass gebied hadden we Mt. Rolleston (7450 voet) beklommen. Later hoorde ik dat Mary’s vader George Mannering de eerste was die deze berg al in de vorige eeuw had beklommen. Mary had deze berg ook beklommen met Andy Anderson toen ze nog maar 19 was.

Mijn laatste avontuur in het hooggebergte was in het Mt. Cook gebied en de Tasman gletsjer met vrienden in de kerstvakantie in 1960. We wa-

ren van plan om de Mt. Elie de Beaumont te beklimmen die eeuwige sneeuw en dubbele pieken heeft, beiden meer dan 10,000 voet en die op de hoge bergscheiding ligt tussen Oost en West.

We waren op de Tasman gletsjer geland met een Cessna vliegtuig met ski’s nabij de Malte Brun hut. Met het vliegtuig gaan, bespaarde veel tijd en vermeed een lange wandeling van 27 km de gletsjer op en we konden ook zwaar voedsel meenemen, zoals vlees, brood en ingeblikt groenten. Van waar het vliegtuig landde, was het ongeveer een halve mijl lopen en een rotsachtige klim naar de Malte Brun Hut, maar omdat ik niet bekend was met het gebied, kwam ik vast te zitten op de steile 30 meter hoge stuwwal van de gletsjer. Het was te gevaarlijk om naar beneden te gaan en onmogelijk om verder omhoog te klimmen met de onstabiele rotsen.

Na een tijdje kwamen mijn vrienden me zoeken en gooiden mij een touw en hielpen mij daarmee omhoog.

Het was een angstige tijd geweest. De volgende dag beklom een groep de Malte Brun berg, een rotsachtige, sneeuwloze berg in de zomer. Ik voelde dat ik nog niet de vaardigheden had voor rotsklimmen op grote hoogte en bleef achter. De volgende ochtend om 1:30 vertrok onze groep van 10 in het donker over de gletsjer richting Elie de Beaumont. De normale route liep via de Anna-gletsjer, maar deze was geblokkeerd door een grote ijsval. Onze route liep daarom

via de voet van de berg Green en over de top van de Walter berg.

In onze groep bevonden zich verschillende ervaren bergbeklimmers en dat gaf mij veel zelfvertrouwen. De nacht was koud en de hemel was helder. De tocht verliep goed met een stevige sneeuwlaag en voldoende maanlicht om onze weg te vinden. Bij dreigende spleten bonden we ons aan elkaar vast met touwen en bij de steile, hoge bergkammen deden we onze stijgijzers aan. De stilte van de nacht werd zo nu en dan verstoord door het geluid van een lawine in de verte. Ze kwamen regelmatig voor en na een paar uur bereikten we een bergpas waar een groep van vier zich opsplitste om Mount Green te beklimmen, terwijl wij zes nog een paar uur verder klommen en uiteindelijk de top van Mount Walter (4005 meter) bereikten. De sneeuwcondities en ijsval waren onveilig om verder te klimmen en met zijn tweeen bleven we op Walter Peak. Terwijl de overige vier verder trokken en uiteindelijk de westelijke top van de berg Elie de Beaumont bereikten.

We zagen dat ze besloten om snel terug te komen en de oostelijke piek niet te beklimmen vanwege het lawinegevaar nu de sneeuw begon te smelten door de opkomende zon. We bereikten de hut Malte Brun en de veiligheid halverwege de middag, na meer dan 12 uur onderweg te zijn geweest.We waren zeer tevreden en na nog een dag rust keerde ik terug naar de stad om mijn werk te hervatten.

Natuurlijk jeukt al dat loszittende haar behoorlijk, de paarden lossen dit zelf op door vaak te gaan rollen, en ze staan momenteel ook vaker dan normaal met elkaar te krabben. The Netherlands and Australia have been collaborating informally in the area of the energy transition over the years. This co-operation has in January 2023 eventuated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the governments of Netherlands and Australia to support the development of renewable hydrogen supply chains from Australia to Europe. The Netherlands is on track to be the first country in northwestern Europe to have the infrastructure in place for the large-scale import of hydrogen.

Partners in International Business Hydrogen

Hydrogen will play a significant role in the energy system of tomorrow; unlocking its potential requires working together on the large-scale adoption of green hydrogen, from storage and transport to production and application.

In conjunction with the signing of the MoU between Australia and the Netherlands, the Dutch government started a Partnership in International Business (PIB) program on hydrogen. The H2 Australia program aims to support the upcoming hydrogen industry by stimulating bilateral exchanges between Australian and Dutch businesses, knowledge institutes and the government. The Netherlands is also a proud contributor to the H2 Global Fund created by the German government to stimulate the offtake of green hydrogen globally. The Netherlands government currently contributes up to one quarter of the total fund, amounting to €300 million.

Since its inception in 2023 there have been several trade missions and delegations going both ways to attend events such as the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, and the Asia Pacific Hydrogen Summit in Australia. During the 2023 mission to Australia, the Dutch business delegation was accompanied by the SecretaryGeneral for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.

Australia and the Netherlands collaborate on challenging in-

ternational topics such as how to improve and maintain the social license for hydrogen, what is renewable hydrogen, and how can we best certify it.

Energy Transition

As energy transition is broader than just hydrogen, the Netherlands continues to explore new avenues for collaboration with Australian counterparts. An area of interest is the offshore wind sector for which the regulatory framework in Australia was established in 2022, and with the first project tenders being awarded as of the end of 2024.

Other focus areas include sustainable sourcing of minerals needed for the energy transition, such as lithium, nickel, and graphite, in which Australia is rich. The Netherlands and Europe are looking to work together with Australia to establish a strong and robust ESG framework around sustainable supply chains.

Combining the above with Australia’s ambitions to be a renewable energy powerhouse, there are significant opportunities for Dutch businesses and investors which we look forward to facilitate.

Dutch Club Plans New Future for Richlands Site

Richlands, Queensland — May 2026

The Netherlands Association of Queensland Inc. (NAQ), known locally as the Dutch Club Brisbane, is preparing for an exciting new chapter at its long-standing home in Richlands.

At an Extraordinary General Meeting held on Sunday 3 May 2026, NAQ members voted in favour of progressing a proposal to subdivide part of the club’s land at 123 Pine Road, Richlands, and develop a new, modern Dutch Club facility on the remaining site.

The Dutch Club has owned the Pine Road property since 1984 and has been an important part of the Dutch and wider local community for more than four decades. Over the years, the club has hosted cultural celebrations, social gatherings, community events, language and heritage activities, and functions for members, visitors and the broader community.

Under the proposal, part of the approximately 6,200 square metre site will be sold to Queensland Lions Football Club. NAQ will retain ownership of a portion of the land and use it to create a new clubhouse designed to better suit the needs of the club now and into the future.

The club will continue operating from its existing premises during the planning, approval and construction stages, meaning members and visitors can continue attending regular activities and events while the project progresses.

Discussions about the future of the site have taken place over many years. The current proposal offers NAQ a practical opportunity to modernise its facilities, strengthen its long-term sustainability, and remain part of the Richlands community.

“This proposal allows us to honour the history of the Dutch Club while planning responsibly for the future,” the NAQ

Committee said. “Our aim is to preserve Dutch culture, friendship and community connection, while creating a facility that is more suitable, accessible and sustainable for future generations.”

The project will now move into the legal, planning and approval stages, including subdivision, development and building approval processes. The expected timeframe is approximately 12 months to two years, subject to the necessary approvals and professional advice.

NAQ remains committed to preserving Dutch culture and heritage in Queensland while continuing to contribute positively to the wider Richlands and Brisbane community.

Across the road from us lived my friends. Two sisters, one the same age as me. The other two years older. We made friends from the time I was three. They had a ground floor house with a garden but no bathroom either. It had a hallway leading to a kitchen and a toilet. Two living rooms at the side and two more bedrooms behind the kitchen. But they had a garden with a sandpit which I adored. My friends’ mother was very strict and every day after school they had to knit several rows before they could go out and play. I used to hang out near their front door waiting for my friend to come out. They also had a sled which we used in winter, sliding down the side of the canals onto the ice. On hot summer nights they were allowed to stay outside and play and even eat a sandwich . I was put to bed at seven for the first twelve years of my life. As for eating outside my mother thought it common. Their mother made all their dresses which were gorgeous. They also wore large bows in their hair. My dress code was sporty. My father believed that children should be allowed to become grubby when playing. He designed some playsuits which my mother made from horrible material which felt like paper in a pinky reddish colour. An all in one, top and bottom. It buttoned up in the crutch with elastic in the legs. Every so often the girls had to go to confession and I would go with them. On the way they would think of what to confess. One of the things they always confessed was they had secretly taken and eaten a spoon full of sugar from the sugar bowl. When I was little my grandfather used to wake me up with a tingle of a spoon on the bowl and feed me a spoonful. My father used to make me mocha sandwiches. A slice of bread spread with butter then with sugar more butter and sugar. Among lollies and sweets, large lumps of brown sugar candy were for sale. My friends’ mother, probably saved my life during the severe winter in the last year of the war, when each morning I ran across the road to be given two slices of bread filled with a thin crepe.The father had a shoe shop and was able to exchange shoes for food. That and a cup of watery soup was all I ate daily before I went to the country via the Red Cross. Years later I learned that the

girls mother, I called her ‘Tante Alie’ a protestant married the girls father who was catholic. He did not believe in contraceptives and the girls for years slept one with the mother and the other with the father. Later on they did have another child, a boy.

My friend’s sister also told me that her father committed her mother three times while the girls were young. She remembered her mother running down the street screaming in terror while being chased by men in white while neighbours watched.

When I was five, life changed. Food became difficult to obtain. My father was called up with thousands of other Dutch men to go into forced labour in Germany. I remember the three of us standing beside the train at the Utrecht railway station. My father was crying. He told me later that he thought he would never see us again. He worked in a factory in Kassel. He came back twice. The first time my mother begged him not to go back. He said he had to go back otherwise someone else would be punished. The second time he escaped and found his way back to Holland. The underground helped my mother find a hiding place. In a room on the second floor was a walk-in cupboard. Between the cupboard ceiling and the floor of the top room was a space. About one metre by two in which he had a mattress, blankets, candle and medicine to stop coughing. He became a secret until the end of the war.

My grandfather, Willem Jan van de Wall Perné was my hero. I adored and loved him. Probably because like most grandparents, he loved me unconditionally. He taught me to read and write before I started school. Once, when I was about five, I had to go to the fishmonger a few blocks away. Mum had given me a note and I carried a small basket. The floor in this shop was always wet and the woman and man wore clogs. I was fascinated by the large buckets of wriggling eels and basins with other fish. Probably harings. which littered the shop. The fishmonger said to his wife, ’who’s that child?’ She replied ‘ she’s the granddaughter of the man with the cleft palate. Until that moment I had no idea that he had a cleft palate. In those days operations to fix his palate just didn’t exist. But I remember being overtaken

by anger with those people for speaking about him with such little respect. Later when food became scarce, Opa learned that a butcher was selling meat stock and sausages. I went with him. On the way home he carried the jug with stock and a big sausage in the other hand. A teenage boy ran behind us and went for the sausage. Opa dropped the jug and slapped the boy and saved the sausage. We lost most of the stock.

My mother’s mother was a large woman with enormous breasts. Her dementia had started when they came to live with us. She wore dark clothes and just seemed to sit. Her cleavage was a mystery to me. I thought she had a cut through the middle of her body and tried at all times to look down there.

SPORT

Once again, Utrecht attacked and had an attempt saved from Yoann Cathline, whose shot from outside the box.

There was a long delay after PSV captain Jerdy Schouten was injured and was stretchered off to be replaced by Ryan Flamingo. After a series of fouls by both teams, Vesterlund was yellow-carded for a bad foul on Ivan Perisic and was substituted shortly afterwards.

In the meantime, PSV seemed to have lost their momentum with a series of substitutions and an injury to PSV’s Paul Wanner. After the delay, Utrecht scored through Jesper Karlsson in the 82nd minute. The PSV defending was woeful.

This seemed to sting PSV into action, as they had most of the match and the shots on goal for the next 6 minutes, scoring through Couhaib Driouech after a Joey Veerman assist. Both sides had chances before the end of the game, but the best fell to Utrecht’s Cathline, whose shot just missed the upright.

Fortunately, for the PSV supporters, PSV scored 4. Coach Peter Bosz might have remembered Johan Cruyff’s quote: “I would rather win 5-4 than 1-0.” This week, PSG defeated Bayern Munich 5-4 in the Champions Cup first-leg semi-final.

PSV defeated Spart Rotterdam 2-0, a week later. On Sunday, May 5, they will play Ajax.

Second-placed Feyenoord has been struggling to find form with two draws against Volendam (0-0), and 1-1 against third-placed NEC. On 26 April, the goals finally flowed, with three against Groningen with Jordy Bos scored one and provided an assist.

Third-placed NEC similarly struggled in form, with two draws (FC Twente and Feyenoord) and a 2-0 win against Excelsior. However, they are still firmly entrenched in third place, 14 points ahead of fourth-placed Ajax. Their achievements in 2025/6 season are still amazing when we consider the club’s size. The Nijmegen ground, Gofferstadion, has a capacity of only 12,650.

Ajax is slowly recovering from the coaching debacle. Heitinga was replaced by Grimm, who was replaced by Oscar Garcia. After watching their most recent games against Heracles and NAC, their defensive structure has improved, especially in the defensive midfield. They have a genuine star in Belgium player, Mika Godts, who has scored 16 goals and 14 assists. His last goal was possibly the goal of the season.

Steven Berghuis has returned from a long injury, and he has lost none of his previous good form. Wout Weghorst appears to have overcome his injury, scoring 8 goals and 8 assists. He may still yet feature in the World Cup. His biggest competition will be ex-Ajax player Brian Brobbey, who was transferred to Sunderland. However, his most recent form has not been good.

Despite their poor season, the average attendance at Johan Cruyff Arena has been 53,458.

“GIVE AJAX TO ME OR KEEP IT STUCK IN THE SHADOW OF PSV!”

Sheik Mohammad Al Saud, a billionaire and the head of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, announced his ambition to take over Ajax. “YOU WILL GIVE AJAX AMSTERDAM TO ME, AND I WILL CHANGE THEM INTO THE BEST SYSTEM IN THE HISTORY OF WORLD FOOTBALL.”

He announced a huge sum that he would be willing to invest to take over the club and released a detailed plan to improve the quality of the Ajax squad. He is also rumoured to be interested in taking over Arsenal.

It does not appear that the Ajax board is taking this seriously, as they have posted no response. Instead, they have focused on searching for a new coach to replace the interim coach, Oscar Garcia, and the upcoming match against PSV. Which clubs will qualify for Europe?

The top two clubs will qualify for the Champions League, which means PSV and one other club. Feyenoord is currently second on 58 points, followed by NEC on 55 with Ajax and FC Twente equal in fourth place on 54. (Ajax is ahead on goal difference.)

As of May 1, there are three remaining matches, with the final match on May 17. In the final round, all matches will be played simultaneously.

Relegation Battle

The relegation battle is even more intense than the top four, with six teams still having a chance of finishing 16th while only four can finish 17th.

Fortuna Sittard - 36 points

Fortuna only need one point from their remaining three games to avoid relegation. with a six-point lead over Telstar. However, their next game is against Feyenoord, followed by Zwolle and Utrecht. None of these matches will be easy.

PEC Zwolle - 34 points

Zwolle have an easier run home with their next match against relegated Heracles, then Fortuna Sittard with their final match against Feyenoord.

Excelsior - 31 points

Excelsior are in real danger of facing the drop. In 14th place, they sit just one point above Telstar, but they have a sixpoint lead over NAC Breda. They face Groningen and Volendam. It could come down to the final match against Sparta Rotterdam.

FC Volendam - 31 points

They face Heerenveen, Excelsior, and then Telstar at home. They will need to win at least two of these games to be safe. The battles against fellow cellar dwellers, Excelsior and Telstar, will surely be fiery with so much at stake for both teams.

NAC Breda - 25 points

NAC look certain to return to the second tier unless they win all three of their remaining matches against Utrecht, Heerenveen, and AZ Alkmaar. As they do not play against any relegation rivals, they will not be able to close the gap by taking points from teams above them.

Heracles - 19 points

Heracles is already relegated. In their final matches in the Eredivisie, they will play Zwolle, Telstar, and Groningen.

Playoffs

The Eredivisie relegation playoffs will involve the 16th placed team and six teams from the Eerste Divisie (2nd tier). The matches will be played over two legs (home and away). Currently, the top six are ADO Den Haag (89), Cambuur (81), Willem II (68), De Graafschap (63), Almere (58) and, in sixth place, RKC Waalwijk. Due to a peculiarity in the Eeerste Divisie league, Roda JC (8th on the table) was allowed to compete in the playoffs due to their winning a period title. The Eerste Divisie is divided into periods based on consecutive matches. Winners of these periods, along with the top-ranked teams in the final table that have not already secured automatic promotion, participate in the promotion/ relegation playoffs, which is called the Nacompetitie.

RKC Waalwijk reached the next round of the promotion play-offs at the expense of Roda JC and will face Willem II in the second round. Roda JC appeared set to win 0-1 at the Mandemakers Stadium on Friday evening, but Jesper Uneken scored the equalizer in the very last seconds. No goals were scored in extra time, after which the Waalwijk side won the penalty shootout. The first leg in Kerkrade ended in a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening, and the return match in Waalwijk was to determine a winner.

UEFA Europa League

On 49 points, AZ Alkmaar appear to be out of the running for the Champions League, but have qualified for the Europa

League after defeating NEC 5-1 in the 2026 Johan Cruyff Shield at De Kuip stadium. It was an extraordinary result. NEC appeared to be overwhelmed with the occasion. AZ attacked from the outset, struck the corner of the goal with a thunderous shot, and only scrambling defence kept the score at nil all until the 32nd minute, when the first goal was scored by Mees de Wit after a fine run down the wing and a low cutback.

AZ did not score until the 67th minute after AZ’s Sven Mijans broke quickly and took advantage of some poor marking to make it 2-0. It became 3 goals when NEC carelessly lost the ball near the halfway line. The interception sent Peer Koopmeiners sprinting to score an uncontested goal. Finally, NEC scored from a headed corner. However, Kees Smit scored in the 91st minute, and Troy Parrot’s 95th minute goal made it five completing the humiliation for NEC. It was AZ’s best result since their 6-0 drubbing of Ajax in January.

Xavi Simons

Sad news for Xavi Simons, who ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Tottenham’s first win of the year against Wolves. I have had this injury at least twice, or perhaps three times, while playing football. I found that it had a severe and permanent effect on my knees, limiting my movement left and right, as well as my ability to contest the ball in the air. Hopefully, with modern medicine and aftercare, Xavi will recover. I can recall that my treatment and advice was simply to rest for 7 or 8 months. He is recovering from this surgery and was visited by five Arsenal players.
