Beste lezer,
Wist u dat het youtube kanaal van Dutch TV vele afleveringen nog heeft staan? Ik heb op pagina 11 beschreven hoe je dit op kunt zoeken. Ook heb ik de meest populaire filmpjes op de Dutch Courier website gezet.
Ook ging Sabrina Pon op pad naar het Tulipfestival en ze heeft, zoals je kunt zien op de voorpagina.
Verder weer verhalen met herinneringen, verschillende migranten verhalen en wat meer informatie van de websites over dementie en een overzicht hoe nou het paspoort te verlengen als Nederlander in het buitenland.
En wat nou het gedoe is rondom 20 minuten steden?
Dominique geeft haar idee daarover. En een kort verslag van Robert van den Hoven, die al 19 jaar de wereld rond aan het reizen is. met zijn flying Dutchman truck.
En omdat dit alweer de laatste krant is van dit jaar staan er verschillende kerst en nieuwjaarsgroeten in de krant.
We gaan alweer het negende jaar in van het drukken van de krant onder mijn beheer. Helaas zitten we in een tijd van verandering en zullen we volgend jaar flink moeten korten in het aanbieden van het aantal geprinte kranten per jaar. We snappen dat het een teleurstelling is, maar we hopen dat je de multi platform aanbieding nog steeds de moeite waard vindt. En zoals je me ondertussen kent. Een positieve noot: Elk nadeel heeft een voordeel, want met de PC kan je de letters dan zelf groter maken op je PC of je kan het evt. uitprinten op je eigen printer.
Voor help kan je mij ook altijd bellen. En Ron staat klaar voor IT vragen. Laat me alsjeblieft weten of je ok bent met het veranderen van het aantal kranten etc.? Kijk naar notes from the editor.

Dutch Courier News – Important Update
Dear readers,
When we took over the Dutch Courier eight years ago, we already wondered: Can a printed newspaper continue to exist? Thanks to low costs, sufficient advertising revenue, and the fact that we did not take a salary from the paper, we managed to keep it going for many years.
However, times have changed. Printed publications are increasingly being replaced by online versions.
Printers and distributors are struggling, which has led to significant price increases. At the same time, the number of subscribers and advertisers – our main source of income – is declining.
To keep printing the newspaper, we are now operating at a loss, and that is not sustainable.
What’s next?
We want to keep publishing the Dutch Courier, but in a new format. That’s why we are introducing a multi-platform subscription:
• 11 online editions per year, available on our website, out of those 11 edition 5 printed editions per year, mailed directly to you
• Audio recordings of each edition, also available online
This way, we can continue offering the Dutch Courier without increasing prices and without extra costs.
We are also exploring funding opportunities and brainstorming creative solutions, such as a short A4 version you can print yourself. We would also love to hear your ideas!
Change can be challenging, but also positive. Together, we can ensure the Dutch Courier continues to thrive.

Dutch Courier Nieuws – Belangrijke Update
Beste lezers,
Toen we de Dutch Courier acht jaar geleden overnamen, vroegen we ons al af: kan een gedrukte krant blijven bestaan?
Dankzij lage kosten, voldoende advertentie-inkomsten en het feit dat we geen salaris uit de krant haalden, konden we dit jarenlang volhouden.
Maar tijden veranderen. Gedrukte publicaties maken steeds meer plaats voor online varianten. Drukkers en distributeurs hebben het zwaar, wat leidt tot forse prijsstijgingen. Tegelijkertijd daalt het aantal abonnees en adverteerders – onze belangrijkste inkomstenbron.
Om de krant te blijven drukken, moet er nu geld bij, en dat is voor ons niet meer op te brengen.
Wat gaan we doen?
We willen de Dutch Courier blijven uitgeven, maar in een nieuwe vorm.
• 11 online edities, beschikbaar via onze website en van deze 11 edities 5 gedrukte edities per jaar, per post naar u verstuurd
• Audio-opnames van elke editie, ook online beschikbaar
Zo kunnen we de krant blijven aanbieden zonder prijsverhoging en zonder extra kosten.
Daarnaast onderzoeken we financieringsmogelijkheden en brainstormen we over creatieve oplossingen, zoals een korte A4versie die u zelf kunt printen.
We horen graag uw ideeën!
Veranderingen zijn spannend, maar ook positief. Samen zorgen we ervoor dat de Dutch Courier blijft bestaan.

Ongelooflijke Familie Herinneringen
Het is een regenachtige middag, en mijn partner en ik zitten gezellig aan de keukentafel, omringd door oude fotoalbums. De geur van verse koffie vult de kamer terwijl we bladeren door vergeelde pagina’s vol herinneringen van lang, lang geleden. We lachen om de mode van toen, de kapsels, en de onbezorgde glimlachen van kinderen die allang volwassen zijn. En dan, zomaar, stuiten we op iets bijzonders: een foto die ons allebei bekend voorkomt, maar toch zo verschillend is. Het is een moment van pure magie, want we ontdekken dat we allebei een foto hebben uit hetzelfde jaar, 1959, met een bijna griezelige gelijkenis. Wat een toeval!
In het album van mijn partner ligt een foto, genomen in 1959 in Weert, Limburg. De familieauto van de Van Lieshouts staat prominent in beeld, met een paar kinderen erin. De foto is gemaakt door een Messerschmitt-fotograaf, die destijds door de straten trok om spontane momenten vast te leggen. Op de foto zit Carla in de auto met haar zusje Cathy op haar schoot, terwijl Peter en Frank achterin de auto zitten. In de achtergrond staat, als een grappig detail, de buurjongen Jo van Geneijgen, die nieuwsgierig meekijkt. Het is zo’n typische foto van die tijd: eenvoudig, ongeposeerd, maar vol leven.
In mijn eigen album vinden we onze foto, ook uit 1959. Ons mama, Riet Grob-van de Wiel, houdt onze Ben in haar armen, met onze Theo ernaast. Ik sta voor de auto, en mijn tweelingzussen Marty en Anne-Marie zitten gezelllig bovenop de motorkap. Deze foto is gemaakt door ons papa, Leo Grob, toen we op weg waren naar onze familie in Aerdt,
vanuit Pannerden, Nederland. Wat het merk van onze auto is? Dat weet ik eerlijk gezegd niet meer. Misschin een leuke vraag voor de lezers van de Dutch Courier om ons te helpen! Stuur je antwoord in, want ik ben benieuwd.
Een andere foto in ons album toont dezelfde auto, dit keer voor ons huis in de Sint Antoniusstraat in Essen, België. Ons papa en mama staan erbij, samen met onzeTheo en ik. Het zijn van die simpele kiekjes die een golf van herinneringen losmaken. Wat deden we toen? Wat mochten we vooral niet doen? Het zijn flarden van een tijd die zo anders was, maar zo vormend voor wie we nu zijn.
Deze foto’s zijn meer dan papier; het is onze geschiedenis, ons erfgoed.
Onze Reizen Door de Tijd Terwijl we naar deze foto’s kijken, praten we over onze levens en hoe onze families hun weg vonden. Peter vertrok in 1960 met zijn ouders en maar liefst twaalf broers en zussen vanuit Nederland naar Australië. Hij was toen pas tien jaar oud. Ze kwamen aan in het Wacol migrantenkamp en verhuisden later naar Bulimba. Het moet een enorme overgang zijn geweest, van het vertrouwde Nederland naar een nieuw leven aan de andere kant van de wereld.
Mijn eigen verhaal is ook een van verhuizing en verandering. Ik ben geboren in Oisterwijk, Nederland, en in 1960 verhuisde ons gezin –mijn ouders en vijf kinderen – naar Essen in België. Mijn vader werkte voor Van Gend & Loos en moest de grens over om een nieuw kantoor en fabriek op te zetten in Belgie. In 1982, nu 43 jaar geleden, maakte ik zelf de grote sprong naar Australië. Het was 29 september 1982, een dag die in mijn geheugen gegrift staat. Ik nam afscheid van mijn ouders op de luchthaven van Brussel. Het was mijn moeders 63ste verjaardag die dag, en ze stond te huilen, ervan overtuigd dat ze mij nooit meer zou zien. Maar de wereld veranderde. Reizen werd makkelijker, en ondanks de afstand hebben we door de jaren heen talloze bezoeken van en naar Australië gemaakt. Die momenten van weerzien, van knuffels en tranen, maken deze foto’s nog waardevoller. Ze herinneren ons aan waar we vandaan komen, aan de moed van onze ouders, en aan de banden die sterker zijn dan tijd of afstand. Deze eenvoudige foto’s uit 1959 zijn meer dan alleen beelden. Ze zijn een poort naar ongelooflijke herinneringen, naar een tijd waarin het leven simpler leek, maar vol was van avontuur en dromen. En wat een toeval dat we, decennia later, nog steeds verbonden zijn door deze gedeelde geschiedenis.

Carla van Dokkum (1943) woonde in Lathum, Gld, op het schiereiland Riverparc. Ze is getrouwd met Onno. Samen hebben ze vijf kinderen en dertien kleinkinderen. Ze schreef Eigenlijk heet ik Tsiwja, een boek over haar turbulente leven. carlavandokkum@gmail.com was de buurvrouw van de vader van Carole Overmaat, de editor van deze krant. In haar maandelijkse bijdrage herschrijft Carla stukjes uit haar boek. Dit is column 74. .

Ik kom nu toe aan mijn laatste paar columns. Om jullie herinnering op te frissen, herhaal ik mijn column 40 van april 2022.

De tweet die mijn leven veranderde
Op 3 mei 2014 post mijn oudste dochter een blog op Facebook; over haar opa en oma die in Sobibor zijn vermoord. Ik zit echt wel even te kijken. Wil ik dat wel? Het is niet dat ik het wil verzwijgen, niet voor niets ben ik op twitter onder mijn eigen naam Tsiwja actief. En als er naar gevraagd wordt, geef ik echt wel antwoord. Maar nu is het wat anders, want mijn dochter heeft ook de foto van mijn ouders erbij gezet. Na een innerlijke strijd besluit ik de dag erna – de voor mij altijd beladen vierde mei – haar blog te delen en op mijn eigen fbpagina te zetten. Geëmotioneerd beschrijf ik in mijn eigen woorden het telefoongesprek met Hanni. Over ieder woord denk ik na. Als ik dan toch met mijn geschiedenis voor de dag wil komen, moet het wel kloppen en moet het een goede tekst zijn. Ik doe dat op mijn telefoon. Als ik de tekst bijna heb zoals ik wil, wordt er gebeld. Zonder na te denken neem ik op. Na het gesprek keer ik terug naar mijn fb-pagina om mijn blog af te schrijven. Maar de tekst is weg en wat ik ook probeer, ik kan mijn blog niet meer vinden.
Ten einde raad vraag ik op twitter of iemand weet waar ik mijn fb-tekst kan terugvinden. Om de tweet kracht bij te zetten, voeg ik de foto van mijn vader en moeder bij met de uitleg: ‘Mijn ouders. Een jaar voordat ze werden weggevoerd. Voor ’t eerst kreeg ik hun foto. Paar weken geleden.’ Op wat er dan gebeurt, ben ik niet voorbereid: een explosie van reacties. Niet naar aanleiding van mijn verloren tekst, maar met betrekking op de foto en het bijschrift. Het bericht krijgt honderden retweets en wordt ontelbare keren geliket. Dankzij de ontroerende reacties, steunbetuigingen en opbeurende woorden die de hele dag door op mijn timeline verschijnen, doorsta ik voor het eerst een 4 meiherdenking zonder in bed met het dekbed over mijn hoofd te liggen. Mijn zoon Hansbart belt me vanuit Londen, waar hij woont met zijn gezin. ‘Mam,’ zegt hij, ‘bereid je voor, ik heb geregeld dat we Hanni in Israël gaan bezoeken. Het is een cadeau voor je verjaardag. Marcelle, Ellen, jij en ik, we gaan met ons vieren, gewoon mamma met haar drie kinderen. Ik heb de reis en het hotel al geboekt.’

Oranje qualifies for 2026 World Cup
The Dutch national team secured qualification after a difficult 1-1away draw with Poland and a convincing 4-0 win at home against Lithuania. Poland needed a win to challenge the Dutch for the top of the group and automatic qualification. It was a difficult game for the Oranje, and they fell behind in the 43rd minute after a quick break from defence. Although there were still five Dutch defenders, Robert Lewandinski brilliant pass from inside the inner circle found a racing Kaminski whose low shot from the edge of the box went through Verbruggen’s legs. Fortunately, the Dutch responded quickly after the break. After persistent attacks, Grabara, the Polish keeper, was grasping for a cross from the left. Malen shot, but his effort was saved, only to see it fall to Memphis Depay to fire in on the rebound and score his 54th goal for the Netherlands - a record.
A relieved Dutch returned to the Netherlands to face Lithuania. They dominated from the start, with Reijnders scoring a great goal after only 16 minutes, sprinting onto a through ball from De Jong. Reijnders hit the post, and Jurien Timber was denied at close range. Although they completely dominated the game with 76% possession, the team was frustrated that they were not 3 or 4 goals up by halftime.
The pressure was relieved after a penalty was awarded when De Ligt headed the ball down onto the hand of a Lithuanian defender. Gakpo calmly struck the ball home. Two minutes later, in the 50th minute, Xavi Simons received a pass from Depay, dummied, feinted, and stepped to his right before scoring the third. The 4th goal by Malen was well-deserved for the effort he put into the game. The Dutch had 20 shots on goal (8 on target) and scored 4. With the game safe, Koemen decided to give debutants Emmanuel Emegha (Chelsea) and Luciano Valente (Feyenoord) their starts. Het Zilveren Jubileum
Op zondag 26 oktober 2025 hebben we een heel geslaagde feestviering in de Abel Tasmanclub gehad, want we konden het 25-jarige bestaan van het DAHC niet zomaar voorbij laten gaan. Er werd gezongen door het Zing! koor. De lunch werd bereid door het team van café Mokum. Er waren natuurlijk een paar officiele speeches, want onder de VIPs hadden we Petra van Orsouw, Presidente van de Association, Richard Mendelsohn, de ereconsul, en onze eigen Michel Gijsberts, officieel de Secretaris van het DAHC, maar met zoveel meer op zijn bord. Zonder hem zou deze viering niet tot stand gekomen zijn, want organiseren, dat kan ie!
Als onderdeel van het feestprogramma was er een voorlezing waarin de geschiedenis van het DAHC naar voren gebracht werd en hier komen de belangrijkste feiten: 2000 was het eerste jaar van een nieuwe eeuw en het was in oktober van dat jaar dat het DAHC werd opgericht als een subcommissie door de Associated Netherlands Societies in Victoria (hierna genoemd de Association). Wie waren de mensen die
deze subcommissie vormden? De namen zijn onder de meesten van u bekend: Jan
Berends, Kees en Tess van Tilburg, Ype de Bruin – allen helaas niet meer bij ons – en John en Elly Krens en Michel Gijsberts, die wij op de viering konden verwelkomen en eren. We hebben ook meer recente DAHC-leden welkom kunnen heten, namelijk Ko Smeink, Daan van Orsouw en Charles Truijens.
Aanvankelijk heette het DAHC het Dutch Australian
Centre, maar kort daarna werd het woord Heritage toegevoegd omdat de oprichters wilden benadrukken dat hun hele initiatief gebaseerd was op het in herinnering brengen van de Nederlandse mensen die hierheen geëmigreerd waren, wat hen naar Australië had gebracht, wat zij meenamen, en hoe zij zich aanpasten en bijdroegen aan hun nieuwe land. Het was bedoeld om ervoor te zorgen dat deze generatie Nederlandse landverhuizers niet vergeten werd. Het werd ook belangrijk geacht dat de bredere gemeenschap in Victoria meer inzicht zou krijgen in het leven van de Nederlanders die nu tussen hen woonden. Wat het oorspronkelijke DAHC-comité werkelijk aanspoorde – en wat het huidige comité nog steeds aanspoort – zijn de spontane donaties van de nakomelingen van Nederlandse immigranten. De DAHC-leden ontdekten dat ze over het algemeen geen Nee konden zeggen tegen de smeekbedes van families om de voorwerpen aan te nemen waarvoor zij geen plaats hadden in hun moderne huizen, maar die, zo voelden ze, uiteindelijk van sentimentele, culturele en historische waarde binnen de bredere Nederlandse en Australische gemeenschap zouden zijn. Paspoort verlengen
Om je paspoort te verlengen hoeft tegenwoordig niet iedereen meer naar Sydney.
Als je in Melbourne, Perth of Brisbane woont heeft VFS een kantoor die dat voor u doet. Een afspraak maken gaat via de website. www.services.vfsglobal.com
Deze service is alleen maar voor paspoorten en voor Nederlandse visa’s. Voor consulaire zaken moet u dus nog steeds terecht in Sydney.
Ook als je naar Nederland gaat kunt u daar uw paspoort halen namelijk bij de randgemeentes. In Nederland zijn de wachttijden ook steeds langer aan het worden, dus het is wel goed als u de tijd in Nederland heeft, want op dit moment moet u dus bij de aanvraag en bij het ontvangst aanwezig zijn.
Wat zijn randgemeenten? Randgemeenten voor een Nederlands paspoort zijn gemeenten in Nederland die aan de grens met een ander land liggen en waar Nederlanders die in het buitenland wonen een Nederlands paspoort of identiteitskaart kunnen aanvragen. Bekende voorbeelden zijn Sluis en Oldambt, hoewel de wachttijden variëren, en er ook grensgemeenten zijn met langere wachttijden zoals Venlo of Echt-Susteren. U betaalt minder dan bij een ambassade, maar meer dan inwoners van Nederland, omdat uw aanvraag niet in een Nederlandse gemeente thuishoort.
Een grensgemeente
Een grensgemeente is een gemeente in Nederland die aan de grens met een ander land ligt.
Als u buiten Nederland woont, kunt u hier uw paspoort of IDkaart aanvragen, wat goedkoper is dan bij een ambassade. Waarom een grensgemeente kiezen?
Kosten: De verwerking van uw aanvraag gebeurt in Nederland, wat goedkoper is dan bij een ambassade in het buitenland.
Nationaliteitscontrole: Omdat u niet meer in een Nederlandse gemeente staat ingeschreven, moet de grensgemeente controleren of u nog steeds de Nederlandse nationaliteit heeft, wat extra kosten met zich meebrengt.
Voorbeelden en wachttijden De wachttijden voor een afspraak bij grensgemeenten kunnen variëren. Enkele voorbeelden zijn:
Sluis: Korte wachttijd, 2 tot 4 weken.
Oldambt: Langere wachttijd, 8 tot 10 weken.
Venlo: Lange wachttijd, 14 tot 16 weken.
Echt-Susteren: Zeer lange wachttijd, meer dan 18 weken.
Voor andere plekken zijn er pop ups in de planning. Het afschalen van consulaten staat helaas nog steeds op de politieke agenda in Nederland.

Nieuws over BVN NPO schrapt in aanbodkanalen
De NPO heeft het voornemen om per 31 december 2026 te stoppen met BVN. Dit besluit is genomen vanwege de forse bezuinigingen waar de publieke omroep vanaf 2027 mee te maken krijgt.
Om de publieke taak ook in de toekomst goed te kunnen blijven vervullen, moet de NPO scherpe keuzes maken in het aanbod van kanalen en de organisatie. NPO Start, het kijkplatform van de publieke omroep, zal worden aangepast om Nederlandstalige programma’s via internet in het buitenland te kunnen blijven bekijken.
De aanvraag om te stoppen met BVN is inmiddels ingediend bij het ministerie van OCW.
Zodra er meer bekend is over het verdere proces, houden we u uiteraard op de hoogte.

You may have noticed the term “20-minute city” (sometimes even a 15-minute city) appearing in the news recently, often surrounded by a lot of confusion and, sometimes, alarmist claims. Depending on the source, it is either portrayed as a planning solution for happier, healthier neighbourhoods, or as some sort of plot to restrict freedom and control where people can go. Really, the idea is much simpler and far less sinister than some of the headlines suggest. It is like Yarraville, being able to walk or ride to public transport, the shops, schools, medical centres, parks, cafes, community spaces, and even some workplaces. Though Yarraville is the poster child, you can see it in Williamstown, South Kingsville/Spotswood, Point Cook, etc.

services closer to home. The concept is already part of Plan Melbourne 2017–2050, which aims to create a more liveable, connected, and sustainable city. It is not about confining people to their suburbs or restricting car travel – it is about providing choice and convenience.
Much of the recent negative press has come from misunderstandings and misinformation. There have been claims online that the 20-minute city is part of a “climate lockdown” or that residents will be fined for leaving their local area. This can be triggering for us in Melbourne after our long, long lockdowns during Covid-19 so people are right to ask questions and find out more. So let me be REALY clear, this negative press is NOT true. The concept does not involve surveillance, fines, or restricting movement. Some of the confusion stems from traffic management experiments in other countries, such as low-traffic neighbourhoods, but these are local measures
and not an inherent part of the 20-minute city concept. That said, there are practical challenges that planners acknowledge. While inner and middle-ring suburbs like Yarraville already have many of the ingredients for a 20-minute neighbourhood, outer suburbs and regional areas often lack the density or infrastructure to make it fully work. Implementing the concept in these areas may require staged development, local hubs (and pubs!), better public transport, or a careful mix of housing and services. These challenges do not make the concept flawed, but they do highlight the need for tailored approaches rather than a one-size-fits-all model. The potential benefits of a 20-minute city are significant. Reducing travel distances helps cut time spent in traffic, lowers emissions, and encourages walking and cycling, which improves health. Having services nearby strengthens local communities, supports small businesses, and makes neighbourhoods feel more vibrant.
It also increases resilience, as communities with nearby amenities are better able to cope with disruptions such as public transport strikes or other emergencies.
The 20-minute city is something that many places in the Netherlands already had for centuries. Places I visit whenever I am visiting family and friends like Zundert, Heiloo, Baarn, Utrecht and where I lived for two years Amersfoort. All places I could jump on my bike and go to the shops, doctor, university or work. Places with local weekend markets, with festivals and community connections through church or social clubs that create a sense of safety and belonging. Importantly, a 20-minute city is not about eliminating cars or forcing people to stay within a particular area. It is about designing neighbourhoods that allow people the option to live more locally if they wish, without taking freedoms away.
In short, it is a principle for better planning: making it easier to meet daily needs, connect
with neighbours, and enjoy a safer, more pleasant environment.
The backlash against the idea has largely been driven by misconceptions, but the practical value of well-planned 20-minute neighbourhoods is clear. For many residents, the chance to spend less time commuting, have essential services close by, and enjoy more walkable streets is appealing. The 20-minute city is not a threat; it is an opportunity to bring life closer to home, improve local communities, and create a more sustainable and enjoyable city for everyone.
Lastly, as we move to a world where things could go downhill quickly, we want to build community, connect locally, and build local services and opportunities. Irrespective of the planners, the government, or big business, we can all start building our own 15/20 minutes cities, together with our neighbours and friends.

I first met Peter van Lieshout in 2016 when he was one of a group of Dutch volunteers working to put together a Holland Festival on the Gold Coast. The driving force behind the festival was Martien Jansen in de Wal, who was also working on PhD studies supervised by my friend Nonja Peters. Martien had written to the Dutch Courier, asking for some assistance with organising the festival. Although I was living in Canberra, I did contact Martien and provided some advice for him.
I moved to Qld the week that the festival was on, and Martien introduced me to Peter and a few of the other organisers. They were all Dutch of course, and they did a terrific job. It also provided me with the opportunity to meet more Dutchies in the area.
Peter lives at his Misty Mountain camping ground in Kunghur (NSW), about half an hour drive inlands from Murwillumbah. It is a very popular and very beautiful camping and hiking area. How he got there is an interesting story.
Peter was born in 1950 in Leuken, a suburb of Weert, Limburg. He was the seventh of fourteen children of Karel Wilhelmus van Lieshout (born 1911 in Mierloo, N. Brabant) and Anna Hendrika Hendrix, born 1919 in Maasbree (Limburg). Karel and Anna got married in 1941 in Helmond. Karel was a fervent Catholic and they had a new baby every year.
Karel worked as a plasterer which he could not do during the four coldest months of the year, because things were frozen. This made feeding the growing family hard during the winter. Anna was very good at managing the few resources she had available, but she hated winter for that reason.
When in 1960 Anna saw an advertisement for emigrating to Australia, where it was warm year around, she jumped at it. Her mother had died when Anna was very young, and her stepmother had treated her like Cinderella, withholding food, clothing, friends, money, and freedom, just making

It needed a lot of fixing which they immediately set out to do. Peter attended nearby Iona college where he was bullied because of his poor English.

Karel was not keen at the idea of emigrating, but Anna convinced him. They applied for the sponsored emigration and were accepted. In August 1960 the family embarked on the ship, the Zuiderkruis, and sailed to Australia. Karel, the 12 kids, and Anna who was 5 months pregnant.
Although quite a few of the family were often seasick, they still enjoyed the six-week trip. Peter liked roaming around the ship with brothers John, Hank and Frank. In Fremantle they were allowed off the ship and had a good look around. The ship then continued to Sydney where they disembarked, and were taken to a train with which they traveled to Brisbane.
The train trip lasted 24 hours and was not very pleasant, but after a bus took them to the migrant camp at Wacol, the family was assigned a Nissen hut (a prefab, semi-cylindrical, and portable building made of corrugated iron over a steel frame, designed by British Army engineer Major Peter Nissen during World War I) for themselves and they loved it.
The communal laundry, bathroom and toilets were close by, towels and sheets were provided and washed by the camp. Food was provided in the communal kitchen, with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. It was a lot better than they had expected. Anna also loved that she didn’t have to cook. It felt like luxury.
After three days father Karel got a job with a Queensland government department. He loved the job and Camp Wacol. The kids learned English at the migrant school in the camp, Mondays through Fridays, and the adults attended English classes in the evening. There were sing-alongs in the evening and they played cards on Sundays. Peter helped his mum (Anna) with a small after hours cigarette selling busi-
After only four years, in August 1965, Karel suddenly died of a heart attack, aged just 53. Anna and the kids quickly converted to Australian nationality so Anna would be able to receive the Widow’s pension. This was not really enough to live on, and Anna soon supplemented her income by working two hours per day at the local Catholic boarding school for girls.
Peter was fifteen at this time and soon left school to start a four-year electrical apprenticeship, which he completed but failed one of the final exams. He had been planning to travel overseas with Terry Moore, husband of his cousin Cathy, and went ahead. Thus, he did not qualify for the electrician license.
Peter spent two years overseas, of which one year driving young people around Europe in a bus for a camping tour company. The destinations were mainly in Eastern Europe, from Bulgaria to Russia. Upon returning to Australia, he went to live in Bulimba again.
Peter, his brothers Frank, Hank and John all started furniture businesses which eventually evolved into brother John’s A-mart furniture chain.
At age 27 Peter married Judy who already had two small boys, Jay and Lee. They lived in Belmont and proceeded to have two more kids, Karl and Mia. Although Peter loved having his own family, the marriage did not last and they divorced after ten years.
Peter followed this up with an eight-year relationship with Cathy Charter. While keeping his interest in the furniture business, during this time he bought and managed the Beenleigh Tavern. After five years he sold the tavern again. Around 2006 Peter met Joan and married her some years later. They went to live in Murwillumbah (NSW). In 1980 Peter had invested in a large property at Kunghur with some friends. At the time it was used for cattle and horses. In 1995 Peter bought out the friends and then developed some camping sites on it. He built himself a house at the top of the property, at the base of the Nightcap range. It is a

A Dutch-born adventurer who, along with his wife Clary, has spent over 19 years traveling around the world in an expedition vehicle.
He was a Royal Dutch Marine before moving to Australia and starting his travels in 2004.
The Van Den Hovens, who go by the name “Double Dutch World Safari,” have documented their travels across 144 countries and share their experiences at events like the Overland Expo. They entered the U.S. in 2023 and planned to spend the next few years exploring North America.

The marriage with Joan did not last. Since 2024 Peter is enjoying living at Misty Mountain with Wilma Burton (who is group presenter for Dutch radio 4EB FM 98.1, and also writes for the Dutch Courier).
Peter is growing plantation trees and some fruit trees as a hobby, and also has a small strawberry growing business in a hot house. Maintaining the property is quite a lot of work, but he has a manager to manage the camping business and sites.
Peter enjoys meeting with Dutch friends in the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas, and is still close to his extended family in the Brisbane area. Mother Anna died in 2015 at the age of 95, but her children are all still in touch with each other and meet regularly. Their mother’s loving care and the shared experiences of hardship in their early years have contributed to the closeness of the family members.
Peter is very happy living in Australia, but does like to indulge in some Dutch foods, such as liquorice, herring, sauerkraut, and rookwurst. He is grateful that his mother decided to emigrate to Queensland. Marianne Pietersen

You may have read in the Dutch newspapers about the historic discovery in Western Australia (WA) of the 17th-century survivor camp linked to the Dutch VOC ship Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon).
The ship wrecked north of Perth in 1656 and 75 sailors reached the Australian shore. Little is known about their story of survival.
Vergulde Draeck artefacts are owned by the Commonwealth of Australia under the 1972 Agreement between the Netherlands and Australia Concerning Old Dutch Shipwrecks (ANCODS).
Thank you to the maritime archeologists, the WA Museum and the WA Government for looking after this invaluable historical site and its artefacts.

Earth, Air, Fire and Water
At the moment the 4 elements are a theme thats come into my yoga practise. Especially when we are in silence we try to connect to the elements of these 4. The feeling what I feel doing that is a feeling of oneness.
Earth:
Refers to the solid, grounded aspect of nature, including land, soil, and minerals.
Water:
Represents the element of fluidity, emotion, and life-giving properties, found in oceans, rivers, and rain.
Air:
Symbolizes the invisible forces of movement, intellect, and communication, encompassing wind and the atmosphere.
Fire:
Represents heat, energy, transformation, and passion, originating from sources like flames and the sun.
I ask my students to lay down on their back in shavasana and lead them through yoga nidra. When the body is relaxt i talk them through the different elements. Feel the air touching you and giving you energy and do that for the other elements as well.
after that we will just connect with the energy off the 4.
We will just lean into it and feel.
Then we open our eyes and look up to the trees and close our eyes again and see the image from the trees and see what our brain does with the image. This last bit is just a bit of fun. No meditation, but a relaxation what feels like imaging an artwork in your mind.
The good thing from that last bit is that no other thoughts can be in your mind and you just became a bit lighter.

Afgelopen zondag was het zo ver: er werd een leuke fietstocht georganiseerd: Schoonloo naar Schoonloo. ’s Ochtends heb ik de stempelkaart al opgehaald met de mededeling dat we na de middag pas zouden vertrekken, en dat was geen enkel probleem. De route was getekend op een kaartje van het formaat postzegel, zonder Teco zou het me niet licht vallen om deze tocht te volbrengen, want een kaartlezer ben ik niet.
Ach, daar kun je oud mee worden, het schijnt een vrouwenkwaal te zijn. Eenmaal op weg bleken we eenvoudig de keurige pijlen op het wegdek te kunnen volgen, ik had me dus voor niets zorgen zitten maken. Door het bos richting de beverburcht waar ik al eerder over heb geschreven, en daarna zo ongeveer langs Kamp Westerbork. Vroeger liep het fietspad door dit Kamp, maar sinds een paar jaar is de fietsroute omgeleid, dit geeft de wandelaars die de indrukken van het Kamp willen verwerken meer rust. Richting

Ekehaar, en volgens het routekaartje zouden we toch wel langs het monument met de propeller, het zogenaamde Lancaster-monument, rijden. weg is. Een man die aan een rijkelijk beslagroomd ijsje zit, tekent grinnikend onze stempelkaart af, dat is snel geregeld. Voor alle zekerheid neem ik een foto terwijl Teco in de ijswinkel van de bakkerij staat, zodoende kunnen we bewijzen dat we hier echt zijn geweest. Wij kopen ook een ijsje en hervatten onze tocht. Door het Heuvingerzand gaat het, een mooi bosgebied, dan steken we het Oranjekanaal over en nemen een stiekem fietspaadje richting Zwiggelte. Van daaruit zijn we zo in Westerbork, en via vakantiepark Timmerholt gaan we naar Elp. Dan voelt het als een thuiswedstrijd, over deze fietspaden rijd ik vrijwel iedere week, zo niet dagelijks, en veilig komen we weer in Schoonloo aan. Dan is het gezellig nakaarten met onder andere de stempeljuffrouw, en we horen tot onze grote verbazing dat het aantal deelnemers dit jaar erg tegenviel. Jammer, maar mensen hebben nu eenmaal een volle agenda, en je kunt slechts op één plek tegelijk zijn. Onze zeer gewaardeerde burgemeester Anno Wietze Hiemstra komt nog even langs met zijn hondje Mila, ik feliciteer hem met zijn tweede ambtstermijn voor onze gemeente, kus kus, niet thuis vertellen hoor, en dan is deze welbestede fietsmiddag weer ten einde. Volgend jaar weer? Dat zou best eens kunnen.

Hoe de Opa van Lucas de Jong van Ameland vertrok en hijzelf operazanger werd in Australië.
Het moet erg tot de verbeelding gesproken hebben, het leek een beetje op het vertrek van de Ark van Noah. Hij heette Sip van de Klei, maar eigenlijk Sip de Jong en hij pakte in april 1955 de kans om een heel nieuw leven te beginnen. Maar in plaats van alles achter zich te laten, nam hij juist alles mee: zijn gezin, bestaande uit ouders en 13 kinderen, zijn huisraad en ook al zijn beesten: zijn paarden en koeien, met hun kalfjes en genoeg hooi om de reis van Ameland naar de Noordoost Polder te maken, waar hij een nieuwe boerderij met 24 ha. grond op drooggemalen land ging betrekken. Het moet op de Oude Pier in Nes een opstootje hebben gegeven, dit vertrek met het schip de “Friesland” van Anne Olivier en Epke van der Geest. Lopend uit Buren vanaf de Esther Meindertsweg ging het vee aan boord, de koeien kwamen onder in het ruim van het schip, de paarden bleven aan dek. Dochter Jannette, het vierde kind van Sip de Jong en zijn vrouw Johanna Molenaar was erbij. “Melken hoefden we onderweg niet” vertelt ze “De kalfjes dronken bij hun moeders”.

Tot overmaat van ramp bleek toen men zou vertrekken de jonge stier nog op stal te staan. De buren kwamen hem nabrengen. Maar bij dat tij kwam men wel weg, hoewel het schip na
50 meter water alweer aan de grond zat. De Postboot moest nog vertrekken en kon het schip los en naar de geul met diep water trekken. De ervaren wad schippers Anne en Epke, die alles wisten van het getij, hielden hun hart vast toen het schip op de Abt, een ondiepte net voorbij Zwarte Haan, over de grond schuurde. “Maar bij Kornwerderzand liepen we vast” vertelt Jannette. “We mochten niet verder, er stond teveel zee op het IJsselmeer. Dus we wachtten de nacht in Kornwerderzand af.” Dat bracht nieuwe problemen met zich mee: de “Friesland” was een open schip. De brugwachter zorgde voor uitkomst: de kleine meisjes mochten wel in het wachtkamertje slapen. Hij was echter wel even onder de indruk toen het zes meisjes bleken te zijn en ook nog een paar jongetjes. Verspreid op de grond brachten ze, goed ingepakt in dekens de nacht door. Jannette vervolgt: “De volgende morgen konden we weer doorvaren en op die dag bereikten we Rutten, waar we aan wal gingen. Het was toen nog een kilometer of drie lopen met de koeien en de kalfjes naar de nieuwe boerderij”. Toen ze de boerderij naderden, merkten de meisjes dat hun buren zich al hadden gevestigd en toen ze daar zes overalls aan de waslijn zagen hangen, waren ze ervan overtuigd dat er in de toekomst vriendschappen zouden ontstaan. Later vonden twee van hun zoons dat twee van de meisjes hun levenslange bruid waren geworden. Al met al was het een lange optocht van dieren. Bij de dam van iedere boerderij langs de weg stonden de kinderen het vee te keren. Zo’n optocht van vee is in de Noordoost Polder maar één keer voorgekomen. Er werd nog lang over gesproken. Al met al was het gezin met alle dieren 24 uur onderweg geweest. Geen enkel dier was ziek geworden. Zelf zou Jannette later terugkeren naar Ameland. Ze

had al wat “scharrelderij” met een jongeman, die net als haar vader Sip de Jong heette, met wie ze later trouwde. Vergeten zouden de Amelanders Sip van de Klei niet: meerdere schoolreisjes, georganiseerd door de Kardinaal de Jong school maakten gebruik van het gastvrije aanbod om met luchtbedden en slaapzakken de nacht door te brengen in een koestal. Zo bleef het contact bestaan.

Oudste zoon Gerben was er niet bij toen de verhuizing van Ameland naar de Noordoost Polder plaatsvond. In 1950/’51 had hij reizen gemaakt als walvisvaarder. Daarna was hij in 1953 al vertrokken naar Nieuw Zeeland. Hij zou verder door het leven gaan als Ben de Jong en de vader worden van Lucas, die op 15 juli een hoofdrol vervult tijdens het Kerkconcert van Canite Tuba. In deze jaren woedde een ware golf van ondernemingslust: meerdere Amelanders zochten een nieuw bestaan in Australië en Canada. Gerben had het van geen vreemde: zijn vader Sip was indertijd de eerste die een boerderij betrok op de “klei” in de Ballumer Miede, maar zou later terug
verhuizen naar Buren. Gerben had als oudste zoon die pioniers mentaliteit opgepikt en vertrok. Hij woonde acht jaar lang in Nieuw Zeeland en ontmoette daar toen de weduwe Mary, die al vier kinderen had. Samen begonnen ze een bedrijf in kantoor benodigdheden in Melbourne Australië en betrokken een huis waar ze nu nog wonen. Ze kregen samen nog 3 kinderen, waarvan Lucas de oudste was. Later werd de tweeling Maria en Peter geboren. Ben en Mary voedden hun kinderen op met aandacht voor muziek, ieder kind bespeelt wel een instrument en sommigen meerderen. Twee van de zeven kinderen vonden hun toekomst in de muziek: behalve operazanger Lucas componeert Lucas’ zuster Sarah theater muziek en geeft verder ook zang- en muzieklessen.

Op zijn website schetst Lucas zijn levensverhaal: “In ons gezin leerden alle zeven kinderen piano spelen, onze ouders vonden muzikale vorming buitengewoon belangrijk. Toen ik tien was, ging ik zingen
in een koor. Op mijn twaalfde werd ik gekozen om een solo te zingen in de Opera Tosca voor de Australian Opera in het Princess Theatre in Melbourne. In de 3e acte kwam ik op in de rol van de schaapsherdersjon-
gen. Tot op de dag herinner ik me de ervaring en de Opera Tosca is en blijft mijn favoriete opera. Vanaf toen droomde ik van een carrière als operazanger. Ik studeerde vanaf 1983 Klassieke Zang aan het Melba Conservatorium in Melbourne en werd in 1984 aangenomen bij de Victoria State Opera, nu Opera Australia en stond in vrijwel alle producties, die vanaf toen werden opgevoerd, tot ik in 1992 naar Londen verhuisde om lessen te nemen aan de National Opera Studio, waar ik tien maanden verbleef”.
Hoe verging het hem daarna: Ben de Jong, zijn vader: “Lucas is heel succesvol, hij heeft in 28 Opera Houses over de hele wereld gezongen als bariton, maar ook als operazanger natuurlijk. De laatste 7 jaar is hij koordirigent en leider van het Melbourne Male Voice Choir en regelmatig geeft dit koor concerten in de Staat Victoria”. Lucas is een gelukkig man en trotse vader van Alexandra en Christopher, geniet van zijn
werk als freelance operasolist, koordirigent en leraar. Zoon van het eiland Ameland. Ondanks het feit dat hij Engels spreekt, is hij een graag geziene gast op Ameland, het eiland van zijn grootvader en vader, wat hij toch vrij vaak bezocht.
Zo staat hij elfjarig jongetje op een foto met zijn neef Ben de Jong, zoon van Jannette en Sip en komt hij zelfs over om een keer Sinterklaas te spelen met diezelfde neef. Ze kleedden zich om bij oom Anton in Buren en hadden de avond van hun leven. Behalve zanger blijkt hij ook een verwoed motorrijder te zijn. Op 30 december 2008 gaf hij zijn laatste concert op Ameland toen zijn familie met 158! nazaten van Sip en Johanna de Jong een familiereünie hielden in “Het Zwanewater” tussen Nes en Ballum.

Ik lees op het ogenblik het boek “The history in 12 maps” geschreven door Jerry Brotton. Waarschijnlijk denk jij ‘een Engels boek??’ Maar in het boek beschrijven ze de beroemde kaartenmaker Joan Blaeu, die toen ongeëvenaard was als kaartenmaker.Hij kwam uit een familie van kaartenmakers maar zijn kaart van 1648 werd wereldbekend. Het was de eerste kaart die zelfs de moderne mens zal herkennen als een wereldkaart van nu. In die tijd was deze kaart heel belangrijk voor zowel de VOC als de zeevarenden die moesten reizen van Europa naar het Verre Oosten. Deze kaart werd ook voor de eerste keer in een atlas gepubliceerd. Blaeu was ook een van de mensen die geloofde dat de aarde rond de zon baande.

Nog leuker is dat deze kaart in drie ingelegde halfronden in marmer op de vloer, in het toen pas gebouwde Amsterdamse Stadhuis, werd weergegeven. Dit stadhuis bestaat nog, maar is nu bekend als het Koninklijke Paleis op de Dam. Koning Willem Alexander ontvangt daar alle belangrijke staatsbezoeken en de nieuwjaarsreceptie wordt er ook gehouden. Als hij het niet gebruikt is het Paleis toegankelijk, als museum, voor het publiek.
En kunnen de mensen dus deze kaart bewonderen.

ing the Japanese invasion of the Netherlands East Indies in 1942. He died in Brisbane on 14 July 1943 and was buried in the Brisbane General (Toowong) Cemetery, where his headstone has deteriorated over time.
His grave is one of three Dutchrelated wartime burials at Toowong. The other two are Abdul Hamid, a purser (hofmeester) in the Netherlands Merchant Navy who died in April 1942, and Boesidien, a crew member of the KPM vessel MV Maetsuycker, who died in August 1942. All three men represent the multinational crews that kept the Dutch merchant navy operating during the war, playing a crucial yet often overlooked role in Allied logistics. Many KPM
ships escaped to Australia after the fall of the East Indies and were subsequently integrated into Allied convoy and supply operations, particularly to New Guinea. With the upcoming restoration of Samanuddin’s headstone, the DACC and CCHA intend to hold a small commemorative ceremony to honour all three sailors. This event will recognise their service and ensure that their contribution to the wartime cooperation between the Netherlands, Australia and the Allied forces is not forgotten.

We wonen in een dorp
We wonen in een dorp. Ook al is het eigenlijk een stad. Maar dit deel van Haarlem, vroeger bekend als Schoten, voelt vooral als een kleine gemeente, waar je niet de deur uit kunt gaan zonder een bekende tegen te komen. Deze zomer zaten we op een bankje in Frankrijk een vers broodje te eten. De caravan even neergezet bij een bakkertje om de benen te strekken. Terwijl de musjes bij onze voeten de kruimels wegpikten, zagen wij de postbode langsfietsen. Op de kruising werd hij bijna geschept door een oud Renaultje. Driftig remmend werd het raam met de hand opengedraaid. Wij zaten klaar voor een Franse scheldkanonnade, maar niks was minder waar! Luidkeels riepen ze “Bonjour!” naar elkaar en gingen geanimeerd met elkaar in
gesprek. De postbode hangend op zijn stuur, de bestuurder half uit het raam. Ons gelach jaagde de musjes weg. Als ik een dorp moet beschrijven, vertel ik tegenwoordig dit verhaal.
De brievenbus in onze buurt hangt tegenover ons huis. Ik doe de deur open, steek de straat over en ik ben er. Minder dan 50 stappen. Toch kan ik soms zomaar een half uur wegblijven, omdat ik even een praatje had.
Mijn familie is het wel gewend dat een boodschapje halen bij de supermarkt op de hoek, soms drie keer langer duurt dan feitelijk nodig is. Fiets ik naar de fysio, dan hoor je me de hele tijd iedereen begroeten en zie je mij zwaaien. Mijn opa Ad Peeters was ook meester in de buurt waar hij woonde. Om hem heen woonden zijn leerlingen met hun ouders. En vervolgens kwamen ook de kinderen van oud-leerlingen weer op zijn school en in zijn buurt. Met de kerk en de school als stralend middelpunt van de gemeenschap, kon hij de straat niet over zonder met iemand te praten, zonder begroetingen, zonder herkenning. Mijn oma, die eigenlijk

wel bij het toneel had gewild en dus niet vies was van een beetje aandacht, denk ik, werd helemaal gek hiervan. Ze kon geen stap zetten met hem samen, zonder het gevoel te hebben de hele buurt aan haar rokken te hebben trekken. Of beter: aan zijn jasje. Want het ging natuurlijk om hem. Ik woon ongeveer in dezelfde buurt. Was mijn opa’s school de Bavo in Haarlem Noord, ik werk op de Bavinck in hetzelfde deel van Haarlem. Er zit een vaart tussen de twee buurten en een geloofsrichting. Maar tegenwoordig behoren beide scholen tot hetzelfde bestuur. De duivel slaapt niet meer tussen twee geloven in, blijkbaar! Als juf die al zo’n 23 jaar honkvast op dezelfde school werkt, heb ik al heel wat kinderen aan mij voorbijzien trekken. Zo’n 600 leerlingen in deze buurt en zo’n 200 op mijn vorige school. Dan kan je dus zomaar bij de soep staan in de supermarkt en een ouder van een leerling van vroeger spreken over mijn Alopecia. Of je staat bij de bloemen en je ziet een moeder van lang geleden. We hebben elkaar al 20 jaar niet gezien en toch staan we daar samen even. Praten over haar zoon,

met wie het niet goed gaat. “Dat je het nog weet,’ zegt ze dan. Zij weet niet dat ik al die kinderen altijd met mij meedraag en sommigen nog ietsje meer.
Mijn student kwam zich voorstellen voor haar stage begon. Op het eind zei ze: “ik denk dat je mijn vriend kent,” en ze noemde zijn naam. Ik kijk haar aan en begin te lachen. “Natuurlijk ken ik die nog! Die viel op de eerste schooldag voor schooltijd uit het klimrek en werd diezelfde dag nog geopereerd vanwege een gecompliceerde breuk!” Hij had haar al gezegd dat ik dat nog wel zou weten.
Ik vind het heerlijk om al die kinderen te zien groot worden. In mijn hoofd ben ik nog steeds dezelfde als wie ik toen was, ook al zegt mijn lijf wat anders. Ik vind het fijn om hun ouders spreken en te weten hoe het met ze gaat. Je bent als leerkracht een mini-onderdeeltje van het leven van die kinderen geweest, maar waar ik me wel mega verantwoordelijk voor heb gevoeld. En ook al laat je ze aan het eind van het schooljaar, aan het eind van de basisschool los, die intensiteit en verbinding is niet 100% weg. Ik snapte mijn opa wel. Niet alleen het feit dat hij hen herkende, maar dat ze ook nog wisten wie hij was, dat is toch een mooi gevoel? Hij zag hen en zei zagen hem. Ook toen hij al hoogbejaard was. Dus sorry als het iets langer duurt wanneer ik een brief ga posten, of snel eieren ga kopen. Net zoals ik iedere ochtend in de deuropening van mijn lokaal mijn leerlingen probeer te zien, zo zie ik ze allemaal ook in het wild. En dat duurt soms even....

Het is alweer november, de tijd vliegt voorbij. Het is een van die maanden die bol staan van de verschillende Hollandse tradities, zeker zoiets als Sint-Maarten, ook het begin van het carnaval voor met name de zuidelijke delen van Nederland met tegenwoordig zowel prinsen als prinsessen carnaval. En net zo belangrijk maar vaak onderbelicht, de internationale herdenkingen voor de wapenstilstand van de 1e wereldoorlog.
Weet u het nog, Sint Maarten? De optocht waarbij kinderen, vaak met zelfgemaakte lampionnetjes langs de deuren gaan om hun liedjes te zingen maar belangrijker nog om overal snoepgoed op te halen. Historisch gezien is dit vooral een traditie in het noorden en het midden van Nederland, al is dat na mijn recente terug-
keer naar Nederland volgens mij een uitstervende traditie aan het worden. De oorsprong van deze traditie ligt volgens de overlevering vooral in het verhaal over de gulle st. Maarten, die oog had voor arme mensen en waarbij hij ooit zijn mantel in tweeën heeft gesneden om een deel hiervan aan een dakloze man te geven. Vanuit die gedachte, is het verhaal, dat de traditie is ontstaan om met name door arme kinderen langs de deuren te gaan om wat lekkers op te halen.
Ook start op dezelfde dag, de 11e dag van de 11e maand, het carnavalsseizoen. Per regio/stad komt dan om klokslag 11.11 uur de raad van elf bijeen om de nieuwe prins en prinses Carnaval voor het komende jaar te kiezen. Steden en dorpen krijgen vaak een andere naam, gedurende het seizoen gaan ze (lokaal) verder met namen zoals Lampegat, Kielegat, Wringersgat en een hele bekende zoals Oeteldonk. Weet u nog wat de oorspronkelijke namen van deze plaatsen zijn?
Ik moest er zelf wel even aan wennen, mijn ervaringen met het starten van het carnaval seizoen zoals deze doorgaans in de tropen plaatsvindt is duidelijk iets anders dan in het kleine Nederland. Natuurlijk zijn er een paar overeenkomsten, plezier maken en genieten van een of meerdere alcoholische versnapering. In mijn geval was dat geen potje bier maar een lokale rum, door-
gaans met een heerlijke kokosnootsmaak.
Sint Maarten en carnaval markeert ook de donkere dagen voor kerst. Veertig dagen na de 11e dag van de 11e maand is het alweer 21 december, de kortste dag van het jaar in Nederland. En geloof mij, na mijn remigratie besef ik pas dat deze korte dagen echt heel kort zijn in het koude Nederland. Vroeger stond deze tijd bekend als de veertigdagentijd, de vastentijd die begon na zowel Sint Maarten als Carnaval. Maar volgens mij zijn er weinig mensen meer in Nederland die tijdens deze periode gaan vasten. Hoe zit dat bij u in Australia, leven deze traditie bij u nog voort?
En 11 november is ook de dag dat in 1918 de wapenstilstand werd getekend die de eerste wereldoorlog beëindigde, ook op de 11e dag van de 11e maand om 11.11 uur. Vooral voor België (wapenstilstand) het Verenigd Koninkrijk (Remembrance Day), de Verenigde Staten (Veterans Day) en uiteraard bij u in Australië zijn dit belangrijke dagen om te vieren en te herdenken. Maar dat hoef ik in het laatstgenoemde u natuurlijk niet te vertellen.
Ook voor deze van oorsprong geboren Amsterdammer is naast 4 mei (nationale dodenherdenking) ook de 11e van november een belangrijke dag om te herdenken.
Ik doe dat op deze dag speciaal voor zeven Engelse RAF militairen die hun leven hebben gegeven voor de vrijheid zoals
wij die tot op heden kennen. Het begon allemaal kort na de 2e wereldoorlog, toen mijn grootouders een van de Commonwealth graves adopteerden op de Nieuwe Ooster Begraafplaats in Amsterdam. De bedoeling was om hiermee verbinding te maken en te onderhouden met de nabestaanden van de Engelse militairen die tijdens deze wereldoorlog in Nederland om het leven zijn gekomen. Daarnaast werd er min of meer verwacht om minimaal eens per jaar het graf te bezoeken en te voorzien van een bloemstuk. Ik weet van mijn grootouders dat de ouders van RAF-boordwerktuigkundige James IZATT eenmaal naar Nederland zijn gekomen om het graf te bezoeken. Mijn grootouders ontvingen deze ouders en begeleiden ze naar de begraafplaats. Naderhand nam mijn moeder deze eervolle taak over en wij gingen als gezien minstens 2-maal per jaar naar Jimmy, zoals wij hem noemde. Om het te eren, zijn naam uit te spreken en een bloemetje achter te laten zodat hij niet vergeten zal worden.
Na verloop van tijd nam ik deze taak weer van mijn moeder over, en zo gebeurde het dat ik met mijn gezin regelmatig naar de begraafplaats afreisde en daar hetzelfde ritueel uitvoerde. Ook tijdens ons ruim vijftienjaar durend verblijf in het buitenland zorgde wij op afstand voor een bloemstuk op het graf.
Ik heb nog langdurig contact gehad met verre nazaten van
Jimmy in Canada, die het in begin maar vreemd vonden dat die rare Hollanders uit het Caribisch gebied (destijds onze woonplaats), na al die jaren nog steeds voor de graven van omgekomen militairen zorgen. Voor ons is het vanzelfsprekend, uiteraard!
Niet zo heel lang geleden zijn wij erachter gekomen dat de gehele bemanning van het vliegtuig van Jimmy is omgekomen. In totaal verloren destijds zeven Engelse militairen hun leven door toedoen van Duits luchtafweergeschut. Helaas liggen ze niet bij elkaar, 4 in Amsterdam en 3 in Amersfoort. Als vanzelfsprekend hebben wij de Nederlandse (Adoptie) Oorlogsgraven stichting verzocht om ook deze graven te mogen onderhouden op de Commonwealth begraafplaatsen. Zo houden wij deze zeven jonge mannen in eren door minstens tweemaal per jaar hun graven te bezoeken en door het noemen van hun naam worden zij nooit vergeten.
Het zijn James (Jimmy) IZATT, Leonard THORNYECROFT, William KELLEHER, Glyn BULL, Charles TRUDELL, Stanley MATTOON en Samuel McBURNEY. Allen afkomstig van het 97 Sqn RAF.

The Dutch rugby association said that trans women will continue to be allowed to play in the national competition if they pass a risk assessment, despite concerns about their physical advantages.
The association set up a “group of experts” earlier this year to assess whether its current policy of allowing transgender women to play in women’s teams “needs to be adapted”, following the high-profile injury of at least one woman player.
In May, Britain’s Sunday Times reported on the case of Dutch player Elena King, who sustained a serious knee injury after being tackled by a trans woman during a premier league rugby match in the Netherlands.
King, who has played rugby since she was a little girl, says on her website that everyone has the right to enjoy the game of rugby and other sports. “However, trans women are stuck, and remain, in a male’s body which causes dangerous and unfair situations in sports,” she said.
Her concerns, the paper said at the time, are shared by other women, coaching staff and at least two clubs. Dutch News is also aware of concerns among club officials.
The Netherlands, unlike many other countries, had not adopted a formal policy on trans women (born male), though world rugby’s governing body has banned them from international women’s contact rugby since 2020.
However, the Netherlands has now decided that the women’s national competition will remain open to trans women from the age of 16. This will be preceded by a risk assessment and, if necessary, a medical review by the association. Trans men can play in the men’s competition from the age of 18.
In addition, if a player uses testosterone “for a better aligned gender experience,” then they will no longer be allowed to play in the women’s competition, the association said.
“Our goal is that no one feels excluded from our sport. This policy combines inclusion with the responsibility for safety and fairness,” said Rugby Nederland chairman Friso Horstmeier. “In this way we are building a rugby com-
munity in which everyone can be themselves, both on and off the field.”
The new rules apply only to the Dutch competition, in which three trans women are thought to be currently playing. In the national side and other representative teams, trans women are not eligible to play under World Rugby rules.
Some 400 more jobs are set to be cut at Heineken’s headquarters in Amsterdam as part of a reorganisation to simplify the company’s structures and create a “more focused strategic centre”.
A spokeswoman told the AD that around 1,750 people currently work at the office, meaning almost 25% of the jobs there will go. Some of the jobs will be moved abroad and some will disappear, Heineken said.
The cuts are in parallel to the expansion of Heineken Business Services. The company announced in May that the unit would be expanded through a new services centre in Hyderabad, India.
More people are not registering whether or not they want to donate their organs after their death, increasing the number of donors by default by 30,000, figures from statistics agency CBS show.
In the Netherlands, everyone aged 18 and over is sent a letter asking them to indicate if they want to donate their organs after death or not. A change in the law in 2020 means people who don’t reply are automatically classified as donors, although doctors will always ask relatives about a deceased’s wishes.
According to the new figures, youngsters in particular failed to make their choice known. Some 41% of youngsters between 18 and 25 have not actively registered whether or not they want to be donors, compared to 36% in 2022.
Caretaker economic affairs minister Vincent Karremans says he wants to work with China to find a solution to the Chinese export ban on Nexperia chips, which came into force this week after the Netherlands took control of the company.
The move followed a ruling by judges in Amsterdam that removed Nexperia’s Chinese
chief executive, Zhang Xuezheng, from his post.
Karremans said he hopes consultations with Beijing will lead to the ban being lifted. The
chips are crucial components for car manufacturers worldwide, and a global shortage could emerge within weeks if exports from China remain blocked.
Jesse Klaver, 39, has been chosen as the new leader of the 20-strong GroenLinksPvdA parliamentary alliance following the resignation of Frans Timmermans in the wake of the party’s election losses.
Klaver was formerly leader of the left-wing green party GroenLinks and one of the driving forces behind the merger of the two parties, which is set to be completed next year.
He was the only candidate for the post after new MP Marjolein Moorman, who has been tipped as a future party leader, said Klaver had her full backing.

Femke Kok knocked threetenths of a second off the world 500m record to become the first Dutch skater ever to set the fastest time in the sprint race.
The 25-year-old started the World Cup weekend in Salt Lake City by setting a new Dutch record of 36.48 seconds on Saturday, before skating to a sensational time of 36.09 on Sunday.
The previous record, held by Lee Sang-hwa of South Korea, had stood for 12 years. “I’d watched that race hundreds of times and always thought: how can you go so fast?”
The liberal party D66 and the Christian Democrats (CDA) should work together to determine which potential coalitions can count on a majority in both the lower and upper houses of parliament, Wouter Koolmees, who has been charged with making
an initial assessment of cabinet options, told reporters on Tuesday evening.
His report marks the end of the first stage in the process of forming a new coalition government in the Netherlands, following last month’s general election.
Party leaders Rob Jetten (D66) and Henri Bontenbal (CDA) will work together for the next three weeks to see if agreement can be reached with other parties on themes such as migration, housing, defence, nitrogen-based pollution, the economy and the Dutch investment climate, Koolmees said. Less travel time and simpler cross-border tickets are part of a major plan announced by the European Commission to accelerate the development of a high-speed rail network linking European cities.
Train users have long complained about the lack of oversight in the European high speed train network and the commission says it now wants to give passengers “a real alternative to short-haul flights and long car journeys”.
The EU has plans to “double high-speed rail traffic by 2030 compared to 2015 and triple it by 2050”.
Under the new plan, the commission says it intends to work with member states to develop a network that will cut travel time for many popular journeys by half and open the market to new entrants.
Train tickets will become
more expensive again next year, with Dutch Rail (NS) increasing fares by an average of 6.52% from 1 January. The increase is roughly the same as this year’s rise but lower than earlier estimates, which had suggested prices could jump by up to 12%.
NS said the increase includes both expected inflation for 2026 and deferred inflation from previous years, which had been held back during the energy crisis.
“The price rise is higher than we would have liked, but much lower than was feared,” said commercial director Bertien van Baak. “We want to limit the average increase and still offer affordable options through specific subscriptions and special offers.”
The shortage in the Dutch jobs market is expected to ease slightly in the next two years, but employers will still face challenges to fill vacancies, the unemployment insurance agency UWV says.
The total number of jobs is forecast to grow by 1.1% by 2027, based on modest economic growth, but demand will vary strongly among regions and sectors.
Greater Amsterdam, central Utrecht and south-east Brabant, as well as the so-called “food valley” in Gelderland are all seeing relatively strong jobs growth, but job opportunities are likely to shrink in border regions such as Zeeland, Limburg and Drenthe.

Waarom viert Nederland nieuwjaarsdag op 1 januari?
De viering van nieuwjaarsdag was werkelijk eeuwenlang een complete chaos! Dankzij een beslissing van de Spaanse landvoogd Requesens viert Nederland nieuwjaarsdag op 1 januari.
Koningsoffer
De Babyloniërs vierden het rond 2600 v. Chr. eind maart met een ‘koningsoffer’. Om de koning te sparen, werd een slaaf geofferd die speciaal voor die ene dag tot koning werd gekroond.
De Germanen vierden hun ‘Joelfeest’ in december. Zij brachten offers en maakten daarbij extra veel lawaai, om het nieuwe jaar ‘demoonvrij’ in te kunnen gaan. De Romeinen vierden nieuwjaarsdag wanneer de lente begon, maar dat
viel echter ieder jaar weer op een andere dag.
Juliaanse kalender
Julius Caesar (100 v. Chr.-44 v. Chr.) bracht hier verandering in, door in 44 v. Chr. de Juliaanse kalender in te voeren. Voortaan begon het nieuwe jaar op 1 januari. Net als de Romeinen vonden ook de Germanen Nieuwjaarsdag vieren op 1 januari een prima plan. Ze hielden deze datum aan tijdens de invoering van de Gregoriaanse kalender (1582). De katholieke kerk echter, ergerde zich enorm aan deze heidense feestdag. Men probeerde er een christelijke feestdag van te maken door met de datum te gaan schuiven. Nieuwjaarsdag viel opeens op Sint Maarten, op Kerstmis en zelfs op Pasen. Totdat de Franse koning Charles IX in 1563 opdroeg de
Juliaanse kalender weer in ere te herstellen.
Drenthe om in 1701
In Nederland vieren we nieuwjaarsdag pas sinds 1575, dankzij een besluit dat genomen werd door de Spaanse landvoogd Requesens (1528-1576). Het was een kerkelijk besluit, waar niet meteen alle provincies gehoor aangaven. Pas nadat Drenthe in 1701 als laatste provincie overstag ging, vieren we landelijk nieuwjaarsdag op 1 januari.
Nieuwjaars lekkernijen
Veel Nederlandse provincies kennen overigens oeroude nieuwjaarsgerechten die erg leuk zijn om te maken.
Op www.smulweg.nl vind je deze streekgerechten zoals: Staphorster Fleeren, een kruidige wafel met anijs. Limburgse nonnevotten, een heerlijk gebakje in de vorm van een knoop of Groningse en Oost-Friese spekkedikken, een klein pannenkoekje met droge worst en een stukje spek.

Boeken
Ik hing als klein meisje altijd al aan de lippen van mijn grootouders wanneer zij vertelden over hun leven vroeger. Naarmate ik ouder werd ontstond de passie om te schrijven over de jaren dertig tot begin jaren negentig. De columns die ik daarover schrijf zijn te lezen in TrosKompas, op mijn website en in mijn boeken: ‘Pure nostalgie’ en ‘Meer nostalgie’ en ‘Nederland bevrijd’. Wat was het een eer om te mogen schrijven over Nederland en Nederlands-Indië ten tijde en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Coach Peter Bosz is the main target for Ajax, but PSV management is unlikely to allow their title-winning coach depart without a fight. PSV is on top of the Eredivisie after an unconvincing away win against 16th placed NAC Breda. Sometimes called ‘The Yellow Army’ or ‘The Rats’ the team had no respect for PSV’s pedigree and attacked at every opportunity. Unfortunately, they could not convert, with too many shots and headers sailing over the bar, or a magnificent save being made by the PSV keeper.
A STORY OF A DUTCH MIGRANT
- 70 YEARS IN AUSTRALIA

Tilburg
A city between Eindhoven and the Belgian border. I vividly remember the constant blare of the air raid sirens, and after the war ended in 1945, how the American tanks rolled into our street. My Mum billeted several English soldiers for several months. As the years passed I attended Kindergarten and Primary school, then moved to tertiary education to the grammar school with the Catholic nuns at the Oude Dijk, studying Dutch, English, French, German, Typing, Pitman shorthand, bookkeeping mathematics, algebra, history, geography, biology and drama.
English, history and geography were always my best loved subjects, and studied Esperanto - A world communication language. In summer, it was swimming in the nearby lake, roller skating and gymnastics.
In winter, the lake would freeze over, and it was good fun skating on the frozen ice. My Mum said the war years had been terrible, and the time had come to look at other future options. My Dad was a builder, specializing in tiling and fancy brickworks. Mum had been a housekeeper for families in Haarlem and Amsterdam. My elder brother was a Turner and Fitter and worked on locomotives at the railways. My younger brother, also a Turner and Fitter who was employed at the Phillips Industries manufacturing precision tools.
At this time, 1955, I was 14 years old, and all we knew about Australia was that Canberra was the Capital City of Australia. We had heard of Sydney and Melbourne, and the Indigenous people made
up most of the population. We heard how Australian Arthur Calwell, Minister for Immigration 1945-1949, was now calling for skilled Western European migrants to come to Australia - as his catch cry was - “Populate or Perish”! Australia is a very big country.
It was then, a large influx of immigration began, when the Snowy Mountain Hydro Electric Scheme was built with skilled migrant technology. So my parents decided to immigrate to Australia. We had to go to Amsterdam for our passports, and checked for health - so we were disease free. Had no criminal records, and my Dad could provide a living for his family.
Sports
I played hockey, softball and swimming and gymnastics. I loved the pool, and would be there 3 times a day, before and after school, and during my lunch break. I was selected for a swimming team to represent Maryborough at the Olympic pool in Melbourne, winning the breaststroke category for the House of Stevens. In 1956, the Tech school took us students to the Olympic Games in Melbourne, and watched Betty Cuthbert win gold in 100 and 200 metre sprints. I had to learn the Imperial system in mathematics - all about Pounds, Shillings and Pence. It was a big turn around from the Metric system. I learned science, social studies (which was History and Geography combined), English, mathematics, bookkeeping, typing and shorthand and graduated with the Intermediate Certificate. At night class I learned dress making. My first job as a Junior was in the office at the Maryborough Flour mill with Willersdorf & Forbes. A year later I worked in the office of the Maryborough Knitting mill. I was a comptometrist (person who operates a type of key-driven adding machine, a predecessor to an electronic calculator). It was a pool of around 12-16 girls. I really enjoyed working there. Then came the Credit Squeeze, and several girls lost their job, including me. At this time, my parents found a block of land they bought from a local horse breeder in Gertrude Street. We were then known as ‘migrants in the bush’, and possibly one of the first migrant families to come to Maryborough. My Dad had poured a solid block of concrete on the site, and placed metal brick forms for
brick making. While my Dad worked during the week at Phelan’s, Mum and I would get on our bikes after school and head to our block. Here we would meet our German friend Werner, whom Mum had met at English class at night school at the Tech school. Werner mixed the cement, while Mum and I filled the metal forms with concrete. We paddled our bikes most days during the week, so we had sufficient numbers of bricks ready each week, for Dad to build our new house on weekends. Around this time, 1960, I met my present husband Henry Doran. We were married a year later on 8th July 1961. We spent our honeymoon in Queensland, just when motels first were introduced. Life on the farm was a whole experience. I had to cook for the shearers, feed baby pigs and lambs and teach day old calves how to drink. Our first son Chris was born in 1962, Rudy in 1966 and Craig in 1969. We took great pride in our children when they were babies and blossomed into young boys. Harvest times were busy, being involved in haymaking, driving the truck, shifting irrigation pipes etc.
On Henry’s family farm at Carisbrook, I discovered an Aboriginal stone boomerang formation and initiation site. I contacted Heritage Victoria, and is now listed on the National Heritage Register.
All 3 of our boys attended the Eddington Primary school, where I helped with R.I. and attended when the teacher was absent. I became secretary of the Eddington Ladies Social Club, we worked not only for the community but also for the school.
All 3 of our sons enrolled at the Maryborough Technical school. I was on the School Council and a cheque signatory, and served on the canteen for 13 years while our boys attended school. Since then all three of our sons have become self employed and very successful in their chosen fields. With 4 grand children following their chosen professions. In 1969, l became a naturalized Australian citizen, pledging the “Oath of Allegiance of Australia and its laws” ‘, to honour” the flag” and “Her Majesty the Queen” The ceremony took place at the Maryborough Council chamber, as I didn’t think such a ceremony had ever been performed in the former Shire of Bet Bet. Local greengrocer Zoe Gazis was also naturalized that evening.
An avid reader, crossworder, stamp and coin collector, photographer, gardener and historian. By 1980, Henry and I started our Dunolly Earthmoving Pty Ltd. business, and I became involved in the Dunolly Town Hall Restoration committee. The lovely historic town hall, which had been abandoned after the new Council offices were built on the opposite corner of Broadway. Norman Day was the Heritage Architect. It took many years and lots of fund raising to bring the Town Hall back to its original splendour. I became involved with the DRAMAS - “Dunolly Drama & Arts Soc”. This group conducted a number of fantastic Music Hall shows with the theme “Stars on Broadway”, to raise funds for a new hall piano. I became the secretary and Front of House person. The local talent was extraordinary. I joined the members of the Gold Rush committee for several years. These Gold Rush Festivals used to take place in the bush at Harvest Home dam on the Moliagul road. The re-enactments of the Welcome Stranger, bush weddings, naturalizations and name giving ceremonies complimented the tent city, people in colonial dress, fashions on the goldfields, gold panning and an array of different food and gold stalls. In 1991, after 21 years, the festival in the bush folded for lack of volunteers. With leftover funds and funds from the Shire of BetBet, the Band Rotunda in Gordon Gardens - Dunolly was established. During this time, Henry and I had become interested in the mining industry. Henry held 4 EL mining claims in Dunolly and Moliagul. With some of his gold, found at Moliagul, he presented me with a new wedding ring, I called “My Welcome Stranger”. That Christmas, he also presented me with a steel flagpole, so I could fly the Australian flag. Following many years of low rainfall and lack of water for the gold plant, all 4 EL licences expired. I joined the 2”* Welcome Record (called the Yellow Book) and became its first secretary. Introducing “Letters to the Editor”, the “Trade Directory”, “Cookery Section” and “Mining Matters”‘. I became the Mining correspondent. With my neighbor we attended night classes at the Tech school to learn oil painting and Chinese cookery, followed by leadlighting, cake decorating, calligraphy. With another neighbor, I joined More on page 23
a China painting class in Dunolly for several years. I became involved in the Dunolly Rural Fire Brigade Ladies Aux. as secretary and Comms. Officer. Author of a published history book - “150 years of “St. George Freemasonry in Dunolly”. In 1989, I stood for Council in the former Shire of BetBet. My platform was History, Heritage, Mining and Tourism. I made history as the first lady councillor in the Shire of BetBet. A councillor was not paid, received a laptop or mobile phone in those days. It was tough going with 6 other male councillors who only supported farming issues. I revoked a demolition order of one of the original buildings on Broadway - The Saddlery, and have written to Council a number of times to draft a Heritage policy, as we had already lost a number of historic buildings. Together with 3 other locals, we created the “Historic Mining Village” on Crown Land on the Dunolly road. I had made a small scale model, embracing early pioneering trades, mining and rehabilitation sites, and all other aspects of mining. With our local Shire facilitator. We took my model to Tourism Victoria in Melbourne which impressed the board members, but the consultancy fee was well and truly out of our reach. However, we established a monthly market on a new site for number of years to raise funds, but regulations ceased the operation. With a friend, I opened the Dunolly court house on weekends to visitors, tourists. Conducted court re-enactments with school students from Wesley College, open days etc. Originator of bringing together the court house, lock-up and stables as a Police precinct, I became a tourist guide and published an abridged tourist book on Dunolly and Moliagul historic buildings. I was instrumental in making the Dunolly court house into a Committee of Management, similar as the Dunolly Town Hall was set up. We conducted Field Days on some of Henry’s mining claims demonstrating mining equipment and mining techniques. I became part Secretary of the Prospectors & Miners Ass. of Victoria. Dunolly had the biggest membership at that time in Victoria. I stepped down as councillor of the Shire of BetBet, when shire amalgamations were announced in

Wat betreft het onderwijs zag ik direct een groot uiterlijk verschil. In Australië lopen kinderen met dezelfde uniforme kleding rond, in Nederland is er, qua kleding, een grote diversiteit. Vaak ook nog beïnvloed door status en/of cultuur. Ik heb, tot nu toe, 2 Nederlandse scholen in Sydney en Melbourne bezocht. Lekker voorgelezen en plezier gemaakt. Ik was 34 jaar werkzaam op Amsterdamse scholen, dus dat voelde ook als thuiskomen. De komende maanden ben ik benieuwd of ik een inkijkje kan krijgen in Australische scholen.
Ook ben ik benieuwd naar de impact betreffende de wet om kinderen onder de 16 geen toegang tot social media te laten hebben. Een boete van bijna 50 miljoen Australische dollar moet in ieder geval de grote mediabedrijven afschrikken. De wet is vooral ingegeven om de mentale gezondheid van jonge kinderen te beschermen. Mijn verwachting is dat nog veel landen zullen volgen.

Een organisatie in Nederland (en wereldwijd) die de veiligheid van kinderen heel hoog in het vaandel heeft, is Childpress.
Zij stimuleren kinderen hun eigen nieuws te maken, zoals tijdschriften en schoolkranten, door middel van journalistieke vaardigheden en met een platform om hun verhalen te delen.
Childpress streeft ernaar om de traditionele manier van nieuws maken om te draaien, zodat kinderen zelf aan het woord komen, in plaats van dat er over hen wordt gesproken.
Volwassenen, zoals leraren, ouders, buren, bibliothecaressen en andere professionals, kunnen fungeren als begeleiders om de kinderen te ondersteunen. De belangrijkste thema’s zijn veiligheid, recht op onderwijs en klimaat. In mijn jaren als meester op een school in Amsterdam Nieuw West zag ik hoe kinderen in hun kracht gezet werden. Deze maand bespreken we het boek
De heks van Limbricht van Susan Smit
Dit is een waar gebeurd, adembenemend verhaal van een vrouw die de machten trotseert die haar willen breken. Het is een roman over de moed, eigenzinnigheid en het politieke bewustzijn van een ongeremde vrouw. Haar process is in 1674, waarvan alle stukken bewaard zijn gebleven, verloopt anders dan iedereen had kunnen voorspellen.
Limbricht, nabij Sittard, eind 17e eeuw Haar leven lang is Entgen Luijten gewend haar eigen gang te gaan, in familie kwesties, in zaken en in liefde. Ze wordt daarin gesteund door een grote kennis van de natuur, dieze ook regelmatig aanwendt om haar dorpsgenoten te helpen. Maar dan wordt ze vanwege een paar ongelukkige voorvallen beschuldigd van hekserij. De kasteelheer is gebrand op een bekentenis, waarvoor hij gebruikmaakt van alle middelen die de inquisitie hem ter beschikking stelt. Maar wat als Entgen tegen alle verwachtingen in standhoudt?
De hoofdpersoon, Entgen is een symbol van vrouwelijke onverzettelijkhied in een door mannen gedomineerde samenleving. De heks belichaamt een vrouw met macht, die bevrijd is van alle overheersing en beperking. Ze is de ongehoorzame of ongebondende te midden van een patriarchaat. Zij is de vrouw met iets te vrije (seksuele) opvattingen binnen de kerkelijke gemeenschap. Entgen is een vrouw die het systeem trotseert en ervoor kiest zich afzijdig te houden en haar eigen weg te gaan. Het
boek leest prettig en wisselt af tussen de tijd met haar man Jacob en dochter Grietchen en haar tijd inde kerker. Het hoofdstuk over de foltering vond ik erg moeilijk om te lezen, ik voelde me boos dat het zo onrechtvaardig was dat Entgen dit moest doorstaan. Het einde is verrassend en anders dan gedacht...
Susan Smith is schrijfster en columnist. Ze heeft inmiddels 18 successvolle boeken op haar naam staan zoals Vloed, Gisele en Tropenbruid. Haar eerste boek (2001) was Heks waarin ze beschrijft wat hekserij inhield en waarom ze zich liet inwijden als heks.
De Heks van Limbrigt is gekozen en gerenceseerd door Desirée, een enthousiast lid van de Nederlandse community in Perth. Desirée is ook een actief lid van een Nederlands talige boekclub. Amidst Colour’ - Tesselaar Tulip Festival Photojournalism 2025
Amidst Colour captures the fleeting rhythm of people moving through vast fields of tulips, a dance of light, motion, and reflection. Rather than portraying the festival as a static scene, the collection transforms it through photographs where colour and movement intertwine. Using a handheld camera, slow shutter speeds, and double exposures, I sought to blur the boundaries between people, petals, and the surrounding landscape, dissolving the distinction between subject and setting.
Each photograph becomes an impressionistic study of form and hue, where layers of flowers and figures overlap, creating dreamlike compositions
that shift between clarity and abstraction. The use of double exposures allows moments to merge and flow, revealing beauty not as something still or perfect but as something constantly moving and transforming as we move through it.
In Amidst Colour, memory and movement merge. What remains is not a precise record but an emotional impression, a trace of light and feeling. The collection invites viewers to pause within that in-between space where presence becomes recollection and light turns into memory. Ultimately, it is an ode to impermanence, a quiet celebration of beauty that shimmers, fades, and reappears like reflections in motion.

Dierenwelzijn is trouwens ook zo’n belangrijk onderwerp. Toen ik mijn allereerste Melbourne Cup bezocht dit jaar werd ik daar ook mee geconfronteerd. Dat heb ik vervat in een gedicht. Hoe zeer ik ook van mijn moerstaal hou, dit gedicht doe ik in het Engels. Zo langzamerhand mijn vadertaal. Hats

waar zij zaken bespraken zoals het op de kop tikken van financiering en het vinden van een geschikte plek. De Association ondersteunde de avontuurlijke subcommissie door $1000 te doneren, waarmee ze een bankrekening openden. Daarna hadden ze succes met het verkrijgen van (kleine) subsidies van de Nederlandse regering door een aanvraag te doen bij Het Nederlandse Emigratie Fonds, met subsidies van de regering van Victoria via de Victorian Multicultural Commission en tweemaal van het inmiddels opgeheven Juliana Relief Fund in Victoria.
Ook slaagden ze erin met de Association te onderhandelen dat de opbrengst van hun jaarlijkse loterij ten goede zou komen aan het DAHC. Uiteindelijk werd deze loterij in 2004 de DAHC-loterij en dit bleef tot 2014 zo doorgaan. Ondertussen bleef het DAHC op zoek naar een kantoor, magazijn, fabriek, wat dan ook, waar ze vergaderingen konden houden, de verzamelde artikelen konden opslaan, eraan werken en ze tentoonstellen. Op een dag kwam er een belangrijke doorbraak: in oktober 2001 bood een goed Association-lid voor een minimale huur een klein kantoor in het Waverley Business Centre aan. Het was heel geschikt voor administratie, maar niet groot genoeg voor opslag of werkruimte en helaas moest dit kantoor vanwege organisatorische en bouwkundige herstructurering spoedig worden verlaten. In maart 2002 had het DAHC echter opnieuw geluk, toen een ander lid van de Nederlandse gemeenschap het gebruik van een garage in Croydon aanbood. De vele dozen met reeds verzamelde

voorwerpen, die bij de DAHCleden thuis waren opgeslagen, werden daarheen gebracht. Ze kochten plankenkasten, waarvoor ze meer financiering kregen van de Victorian Multicultural Commission, en begonnen honderden boeken en andere voorwerpen op te slaan. Ze kregen ook financiering van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Ambassade in Canberra om een computer en printer aan te schaffen. Hiermee konden ze alles wat
werd ontvangen en tentoongesteld correct registreren, catalogiseren en vastleggen.
De plaats in Croydon was bijna volledig gevuld en jammer genoeg helemaal niet geschikt voor tentoonstellingen. Vandaar het vaste voornemen voor “een eigen plek”.
Er waren echter al een aantal kleine tentoonstellingen geweest in enkele gemeentelijke bibliotheken en bekende plekken zoals de Abel Tasman Club, Avondrust en Beatrix Village en natuurlijk ook op het Holland Festival. Wat we lieten zien waren bijvoorbeeld keukengerei zoals voorraadbussen, emmers en koffiemolens, kinderspellen en verzamelingen sigarenbandjes en luciferdoosjes, Delftsblauwe kopjes, vazen en souvenirs, immigratiepapieren, veel koperen voorwerpen en boeken, boeken en nog eens boeken! Eind 2003 accepteerde het DAHC een aanbod van de Dutch Club Abel Tasman om opslag en verzamelingstukken naar hun gebouw te verplaatsen, aangezien de clubruimtes slechts gedeeltelijk werden gebruikt. Dat bleek inderdaad de allerbeste beslissing te zijn. Er kwam natuurlijk veel werk bij kijken om alles uit Croydon over te brengen, maar het was de moeite waard. Aanvankelijk werden de meeste voorwerpen opgeslagen in een redelijk grote ruimte, die vele jaren geleden het “toneel” was geweest. Vervolgens begon DAHC vitrines aan te schaffen en had eindelijk de gelegenheid om het publiek een verscheidenheid aan voorwerpen die tot dan toe verzameld waren te tonen.
Tegelijkertijd was er een plan in voorbereiding om de hele club te veranderen, aan te passen, te renoveren, enzovoort. Een nieuw bestuur, dat toen de Abel Tasman Club leidde, had succes met het verkrijgen van een lening van de Association om de voorgenomen veranderingen uit te voeren. Het geld was nodig om niet alleen ingrijpende herstructureringen aan te
brengen en vergunningen te verkrijgen, maar ook om te betalen voor de bouwkundige tekeningen voor een gebouw voor het DAHC!
Eindelijk, eind 2008, begon het DAHC met de voorbereidingen voor het eigen gebouw. Schuren en andere opslagplaatsen werden gesloopt en op 11 december 2008 werd de oude betonnen vloer verwijderd om voor te bereiden op het storten van de fundamenten in 2009. Op 25 oktober 2008 was echter de eerste steen al gelegd! Van oktober 2010 tot maart 2011 werd de binnen- en buitenkant van het gebouw voltooid en op 6 maart 2011 werd het gebouw officieel geopend door de Ambassadeur van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in Australië, de heer Willem Andreae.
Dat was de geschiedenis van hoe het DAHC begon. En vandaag vieren we dat het in 25 jaar is uitgegroeid van zulke heel bescheiden, maar gepassioneerde, beginjaren tot een onderdeel van de Victorian Collections, die samenwerken met Museums Victoria.
Niet alleen wordt onze collectie erkend als een museum, maar meer dan 200 van onze voorwerpen kunnen online worden bekeken. Alles wat u hoeft te doen is het volgende in te typen: Dutch Australian Heritage Centre Victoria, en zodra een afbeelding van twee poppen in Volendamse klederdracht verschijnt, weet u dat u bij het juiste Victorian Collections-adres
bent. We besloten ook dat we zoveel mogelijk mensen in de Nederlandse gemeenschap wilden bereiken en dus begon ik in 2013 maandelijkse artikelen in te sturen naar de Dutch Courier. Het belangrijkste doel van deze artikelen was (en is) om mensen bewust te maken van ons bestaan door het soort dingen te beschrijven die u waarschijnlijk in onze collectie zult vinden. Aangezien deze voorwerpen hierheen werden gebracht door Nederlandse immigranten die ze essentieel achtten voor hun bestaan in dit nieuwe land, betekende het dat we met verhalen erover herinneringen deelden. Door de jaren heen hebben we regelmatig werkbijeenkomsten gehouden om onze collectie letterlijk toonbaar te maken. Dit betekent het uitpakken van de donaties, ze sorteren in categorieën en klaarmaken voor tentoonstelling. Om voorwerpen op onze Victorian Collections-site te plaatsen, werken vrijwilligers in paren, met loepen en meetlinten, en typen de beschrijvingen in het Engels (hoewel de naam van het voorwerp eerst in het Nederlands, daarna in het Engels getypt wordt), nemen zo scherp mogelijke foto’s van het voorwerp en sturen vervolgens foto en beschrijving naar Victorian Collections. Wat betreft hoe we ons museum lichamelijk hebben ingericht– hebben we het geluk gehad twee mensen aan te trekken met etaleer-vaardigheden en ervaring, namelijk Charles Truijens, vroeger verantwoordelijk voor de etalages van Myers en Grace Brothers in heel Australië, en Liz de Jonge, die haar eigen etaleerbedrijf gevoerd heeft. En we bieden rondleidingen gedurende Abel Tasman - lunches aan.

1993, as I did not believe that a rural communities had much in common with urban communities. Following 3 years of Commissioners, Shire Amalgamations took place in 1997, and a new Council was elected. I was asked by the Mayor at that time, what the new Shire ought to be called? I suggested “Goldfields”, trying to keep our gold mining history of the “Welcome Stranger” and “Golden Triangle” alive, as Maryborough councillors always aimed for a green belt around their town. The new name was adopted and is now known as “Central Goldfield Shire” . I was then successful in altering the boundary line at Moliagul, as it too had become part of “Loddon Shire”. The “Welcome Stranger” monument had always been part of the former BetBet shire. Following a meeting with Electoral officers, I was able to change the name of North Ward to “Flynn Ward”, named after John Flynn, born in Moliagul - 25 Nov. 1880. Pioneer, who created “Flynn of the Outback”‘, forerunner of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. I supplied the Maryborough Advertiser with stories and photos of historic buildings for their tourist magazine for several years. It was a black and white, size A4 publication on low grade paper. I assisted with the layout, format, proof reading of the new “Goldfields Getaway”. Now a half size issue on glossy paper.

Grade Prep and Grade 1 with exercises PMP - Perceptory Motor Program. I applied, and after a Police check, I got the position. These exercise routines were of great benefit which helped the students with their studies. I assisted with reading, mathematics, painting, swimming, bushwalking, flying a kite, playing cricket, and cooking pikelets. I showed the students the art of goldpanning during their Colonial Festival. I became an Intergration Aide and left school in 2002.
I called a Public meeting to establish the Northern Goldfields Tourism Ass. Promoting our local goldfields, local wineries and accommodation. Our group worked on creating the first Tiny Towns’ map for tourism. In 1996, Henry and I were approached to become members of the World Gold Panning Ass. In 1997. Our Australian team went to Italy, where the World Gold Panning Championships were to be held that year. It was our team’s aim to get the organisers’ bid, to win the World Gold Panning Championships for Maryborough in 2001 and for Australia. We were successful and got the World Bid. In 1989, we both participated in the World Gold Panning Championships in ColomaCalifornia - USA. Henry won a gold medal in the Senior section. I won a gold medal in the National Gold Panning Championships at Forest Hill. From 1989 to 2007, we participated in World Gold Panning Championships in Italy, not far from Milan, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Finland, Sth. Africa and Canada. While in Canada, I was asked by the World President, if I would be a sub-editor and write interesting stories for
“Golden Times”, the World Gold Panning magazine for Australia, NZ, Italy and USA. I did so for a number of years. In 1996, my old Dutch school friend had come from Holland to visit us in Eddington. She told me I had to learn my Dutch language again. But after 45 years of not speaking a word of Dutch, I didn’t know where to begin a sentence. With the help of 2 dictionaries - English/Dutch, and Dutch/ English, the words gradually came back, and I can have a Dutch conversation again. Dutch migrants were often referred to as ‘the silent migrants’, as they came here, slotted in, worked hard and achieved.
Years of Gold in Dunolly”. Meeting was well attended, and 6 months of celebrations followed, where almost everyone, organizations and clubs participated in events relating to history and gold.
In 2001, the World Gold Panning Championships were held in Maryborough. Councillors, and the business community were ill prepared to stage such a prestigious world event. However, the local were given a treat to see panners from 20 other member countries, parading in their colourful national costumes in Maryborough’s street procession. I handed out dozens of “Welcome Stranger” pins to the international panners. It amazed me just how much they already knew about our goldfields in Victoria and Western Australia. Coloma, a very small township in Eldorado County - Northern California, not far from Sacramento, where gold was first discovered in 24.1.1848 in the tailrace of the local sawmill, or Sutter’s Mill, as the locals say, situated on the south fork of the American river. I was interviewed on radio California and radio Zurich to explain the intricacies of world gold panning. Henry and I became the Ambassadors for the Sister Cities of ClunesVic. - Australia and Coloma - California, and delivered many good articles and public relations between the two centres. During our world goldpanning days which ended in 2002 in Canada, we travelled to many other European countries including England, Scotland and several trips to Holland. In Finland, high up in the arctic circle the Gold Museum at Tankavaara,
contains gold from around the world, including 2 illuminated showcases with our replicas of Australia’s “Welcome Stranger” and “Hand of Faith” gold nuggets. It even has a button from the Dunolly Museum up on its wall and the different goldpans used. My brother and I joined an art class to brush up on our drawing skills and water colouring.
I became a member of the Dunolly Museum (Goldfields Historical & Arts Soc. Inc.). I was elected Sec. /Treas. and introduced a new bookkeeping system. Henry and I established the Welcome Stranger Gold panning Association in Dunolly. We conducted 4 successful championships, but found it difficult to continue without more volunteers. The Ass. finalized its operation, and I donated $1000 to the Dunolly Museum to establish the
“Welcome Stranger” Research centre and arrange for a new heritage street sign board. I also donated a $1000 to St. George Masonic centre towards their building fund. I’ve also successfully applied for grants for the Welcome Record (new printer), Dunolly Museum (Microfiche and multi purpose printer), several grants for the “Welcome Stranger” Gold panning (Tourism).
With the help of 2 locals, we started the Dunolly Traders Ass. It was well supported at that time and I became Sec / Treas.. We conducted a monthly market along historic Broadway shop fronts.
In 2000, Henry and I established our “ Speciality Sawn Timbers” business, • specialising in Australian hardwood timbers. Henry obtained a sawmiller’s licence, I did the administration side. We travelled to many markets. Our timber slabs were popular. In our travels to New Zealand, Tasmania and south west of Western Australia, we found that all sawmills have now closed. The big chainsaws are no longer made and spare parts unobtainable.
In 2010, I brought Australia Day to Dunolly, as Shire of BetBet councillors could not see a need for it, and since shire amalgamations, Central Goldfields had overlooked this, only holding it in Maryborough. It was also the year I was given “Citizen of the Year” award. Young Matthew

It was a glorious day! Being a past member of the Perth Historical Soc., we flew to Perth in 2016, and in our hire car drove to Shark Bay at Denham - WA. We participated in the 400 year commemoration of the landing of Dirk Hartog. I met the premier Mr. Roger Cook, inspected their museum and visited Monkey Mia.
In 2018, I retired from public involvement, and handed the Sec/Treas. over to a new Committee. An avid reader, crossworder, stamp and coin collector, gardener, photography and historian. A skilled letter writer, having written to a past premier, several ministers and past treasurer, Mr. Costello - all with positive outcomes.
I joined the art class of renowned landscape painter Mal Gilmour and worked with oil paintings. I like drawing the old remnant of deserted farm houses, broken down blacksmiths structures, Australian landscapes, miners’ cottages and goldmining monuments. I have won several first and second prizes.
We travelled to Hahndorf in the Barossa valley S.A. and inspected the studio of Hans Heyson, painter of Australian gum trees and landscapes. I worked with Heritage Victoria restoring the first commercial building in Dunolly.
In 2018, I handed over my Sec/Treas. position to a new Committee, and I retired from public activities.
Onthe 8: July 2025, Henry and I celebrated our 64** wedding anniversary.
Australia has been good to me. Looking back during my 50 odd years as a volunteer, l’ve met wonderful people and made lasting friendships. It is vital to look to the future and embrace bold and new concepts, yet, it is important to look back on history, and learn from it, because, if you don’t know where you have been, you won’t know where you are going!
We now live life in the slow lane, still on the farm. We potter around in the vegetable garden, Henry tending his bees, while In my spare time, I still paint and draw.
I am so glad, that 70 years ago, (16 Oct. 1955 - 16 Oct 2025) my parents chose Australia - the “Lucky Country”!

PSV keeper
He was the standout player, saving one attempt that was destined for the top right corner. Gus Til saved any embarrassment for PSV with two attempts in two minutes. His first attempt was saved, but a header from a Perisic cross found the bottom left corner in the 36th minute.
Sydney van Hooijdonk had a good chance at the hour, but his header was too high.
NAC almost drew the game in the end, but desperate PSV defending saved the game for PSV.
Champions LeagueLiverpool 1 - PSV 4
After watching the NAC game, I didn’t think it was possible for PSV to defeat Liverpool in Liverpool. Yet, they outplayed the English giants, winning 4-1. Arne Slot’s days appeared to be numbered after a series of defeats.
Heracles Almelo 8 v PEC Zwolle 2 (2nd Nov)
In the craziest game of the season, last-placed Heracles stunned pundits with an extraordinary 8-2 win over PEC
Zwolle. Socceroos midfielder Ajdin Hrustic provided two assists in their first win in 10 matches. It came after their head coach and technical director were sacked, but even the interim manager, Hendrie Kruzen, was amazed. “This is bizarre… I can’t explain it any other way.” In one match, Heracles scored more goals than in the previous 10 combined, with Jizz Hornkamp scoring a hat trick.
The victory followed a 4-1 Cup win over NAC Breda. Under Kruzen, Heracles has won all four matches, scoring 18 goals and conceding six. They are now off the bottom of the Eredivisie and one point away from escaping the relegation zone.
Australian midfielder Adrian Hrustic, has hit form and is now equal second for assists with six, level with PSV duo Ivan Perisic and Jey Veerman. With the team playing so well, it is strange that they would appoint a new coach and even stranger that it will be Ernest Faber, the technical director from Adelaide United. He will become head coach until the end of the season, when he will become the technical director. He will then be given
the power to appoint his own head coach.
Although Kruzen has stated that he has no interest in the position, it is most likely because he does not have the correct coaching badges and has no plans to obtain them. His preference is to remain the assistant coach.
Another Aussie midfielder, 23-year-old Cameron Peupion, scored again for ADO Den Haag’s 4-3 win over MVV in the Dutch second tier. ADO has made the best start in 37 years.
Who is Ernest Faber?
Once known as ‘Mr. PSV, Faber spent about a decade coaching PSV’s youth academy before arriving as the technical director for Adelaide in 2024. Anyone who has watched Adelaide and their young players would easily recognise his success in championing the youth. He has had some controversy with accusations that he undermined last year’s coach, Carl Veart.
17th placed Heracles has continued its winning streak with a hard-fought 4-2 win against Go Ahead Eagles. I was struck by the devotion and enthusiasm of the Heracles supporters. It was an enjoyable game to watch.
Heerenveen v AZ Alkmaar (23rd Nov)
Ninth-placed Heerenveen is playing beautiful football. I was worried at the start of the year that frustration might get the better of them, but their last few games have yielded good results, with a 3-1 win at home against thirdplayed AZ, a 1-1 draw with Ajax, 2 nil win over Fortuna Sittard, and a 3-0 win over VVV in the KNVB Cup. The big test will come next week against PSV (34 points). After watching both teams play this week, and unless Ruben van Bommel returns from injury, I am predicting an upset with Heerenveen (17 points) playing at home.
Groningen v PEC Zwolle
In many ways, it was a hilarious game, with the start delayed due to snow. Groundsmen

frantically pushed their blue snow shovels across the turf to allow a start. It was a nightmare for Groningen, who had 31 shots on goal and 16 on target. PEC had only five shots, with three on target, yet scored two goals. Thom van Bergen scored both Groningen’s goals. PEC scored first in the 11th minute against the run of play, but Van Bergen pulled one back before halftime. At the hour, PEC once again stunned the home supporters, with Floranus scoring at the hour. They survived waves of attacks until they broke in the 90th minute, with Van Bergen saving the day for Groningen. However, they should have had the winner with seconds to go, only for the snowy conditions to thwart what should have been an easy goal. A shot was deflected, which then ricocheted off the keeper’s head to fall in front of a Groningen player. In the snow, his shot skidded slowly toward the goal, only to be cleared off the line.
The snowy conditions made it difficult to play. Three times the snow had to be removed, once because the referee could no longer see the lines in the penalty box.
Feyenoord v NEC
Second-placed Feyenoord has had a very bad November, with three defeats against two clubs that fans would expect them to beat. In Europe, they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Stuttgart. In the Eredivisie, they were beaten 2-1 by Go Ahead Eagles and 4-2 at home against NEC Nijmegen. Although they attacked strongly for the first 20 minutes, they were wasteful with their attempts, sailing over the bar. Last year’s top scorer, Sem Steijn, had the best chance, but his shot was blasted wide of the left upright. The club has ten players injured, including Australian Jordy Bos, who has missed 4 games. It was made worse with Stiejn suffering a hamstring injury but is expected to return in early December.
Feyenoord continued to press and were unlucky on three occasions with good saves from the keeper and a low cross just out of reach for a lunging Feyennord forward. NEC shocked the Rotterdam faithful with a thunderbolt from outside the box by Darko
Nejasmic was barely saved by Wellenreuther’s amazing leap to push the ball away from the top right-hand corner. Unfortunately, five minutes later, the keeper made a poor pass into the midfield, where it was intercepted. A pass was sent to the right toVhery who crossed to Bryan Linssen who stabbed the ball home from the centre of the box.
Encouraged by the goal, NEC almost scored through a flurry of attempts by Linssen, Chery, and Darko Nejasmic. Steijn and Moussa responded, but their attempts were saved. Another struck the bar. After continued pressure, Leo Sauer, with an assist by Steijn, scored with a powerful diving header from close range in added time. In the second half, despite five shots on goal by NEC, Feyenoord took the lead through Bart Nieukoop from the corner of the six-yard box. NEC responded with two goals - two headers by Noe Lebreton and Kento Shiogai in the 90th minute.
What was lamentable for Feyenoord was the extremely poor defence in conceding the goals. Both players were unmarked in front of goal. The fourth goal resulted from a long clearance from defence that found the NEC winger, who attempted to pass inside to Kento Shiogai. Instead, it ricocheted off the defender into the path of Shiogai, who sent a forty-five-metre shot over the advancing keeper into the net for a historic 2-4 win for NEC.
Volendam 1 - FC Twente 1
Readers may remember Dutch internationals, Arnold and Gerrie Mühren. Their nephew, 36 year old Robert, came off the bench to head home the equaliser against eight placed Twente.
Sparta Rotterdam 1- Fortuna Sittard 1
It was a story of missed chances by tenth-placed Sparta who eventually took the lead through a header by Kitolano. Fortuna Sittard equalised after a corner fell to the feet of Sierhuis who netted from close range.
