Beste lezer,

Dutch celebration a great success
When the Yarra Valley Italian Cultural Group released an award winning book Dreams From A Suitcase in 2009 it planted a seed in the mind of Maria McCarthy, a past mayor of the Shire Of Yarra Ranges. Maria has held various positions in the YVICG, and more recently also being president of the Lilydale Historical Society. To be able to tell the stories of Italian migrants coming to the Yarra Valley opened up the possibility of extending that project to another group of migrants who settled locally in large numbers, being the Dutch.
Within the last year Maria got in contact with Helen Darvell, who in turn brought in Anne and Gerry van Horick. With a large Dutch population having settled around Monbulk, contact was made with the
Monbulk Historical Society, in particular past president Jill A’Vard who had long been planning to tell the story of Monbulk’s Dutch history. This created the nucleus of an energetic committee, along with Mary Gibson, Karin Seamer and more recently Michael Gijsberts (Dutch Heritage Centre in Carnegie), Rita and David Sandfort. Additional help on the day from Wendy Dennison and Brian Seamer serving tea and coffee was greatly appreciated.
Plans were formulated to gather information of the families, create story boards for about 30 families from around the Monbulk district and have a big celebration close to the Netherlands Koningsdag (King’s Day - April 27) with music and food. The Dutch embassy were very supportive and provided a $10,000 grant towards the costs, along with local businesses also con-
tributing, including Bendigo Bank and Broersen’s.
The Monbulk and Silvan areas in particular became home to many Dutch migrants after WW2 and they have transformed the district, primarily through the establishment of nurseries and flower farms which dot our district today and provide so much local employment. They also banded together to form the Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club, originally called the Lyrebirds, and this is the only soccer club based in the central part of the Dandenongs.
Sunday May 3 was booked in for the event, titled From The Lowlands To The Ranges, to be held at the Monbulk Hub (Living & Learning Centre). Despite inclement weather the people came in their hundreds and packed the venue, with long queues at the food stalls outside. Costumes for
the day for the organising committee were provided by Tesselaar’s.
The event was launched with speeches from Janna McCurdy (representing the Dutch Heritage Centre), Cr. Richard Higgins (Mayor SYR), Daniela de Martino (State Member for Monbulk) and Aaron Violi (Federal Member for Casey). Music was supplied by the Dutch singing group Zing along with the Van Tongeren Sisters.
The display will be at the Monbulk Hub until the end of June and can be seen on any weekday between 9am and 5pm, except public holidays, which are the normal open hours of the Hub. Jill A’Vard is now working on gathering stories from more of Monbulk’s Dutch community to compile into a book to be launched later this year.

The Lost White Tribes by Henry van Zanden
The 4th Edition of The Lost White Tribes of Australia examines in more detail what happened to the shipwreck survivors of the Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon) and the Zuytdorp. New evidence confirming their long-term settlement and/or assimilation with Aboriginal tribes is presented, along with a story about a new white tribe discovered near Perth, in Subiaco.
Settlements of white tribes have existed in Australia since 1656. “The following curious tradition is current among all the Aboriginal tribes from the Moore River to Shark’s Bay… That the people of the other tribe were white.” Augustus Oldfield
Much more emphasis has been placed on the lost white tribes of northwestern Australia, which were first explored inland by Lieutenant George Grey, who described an encounter with a mysterious tribe.
“A remarkable circumstance is the presence among them of a race… almost white.” He called them “Individuals of an Alien White Race.” He found European-looking figures in rock art that he interpreted as depictions of earlier European visitors.
The Bigge Island rock art depicts Dutch sailors in a boat, smoking pipes, carrying buckets, and wearing hats, shoes, and clothing. Comparing these drawings with examples of Wandjina rock art and 17th-century paintings, I came to the compelling conclusion that Dutch sailors and women were shipwrecked, probably during the late 17th century, in the Kimberley region.

“There have been repeated rumours… of a settlement near the northwestern shores of Australia by a Dutch shipwrecked crew, whose descendants, the offspring of native wives, are said to speak, to the present day, the language of both parents, and to have a considerable smattering of the knowledge and arts of civilised life.”

Brian Brobbey, Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo, Justin Kluivert, Noa Lang, Donyell Malen, Cyrsencio Summerville, Wout Weghorst.
The unluckiest player to miss out was Xavi Simons who suffered a cruel season ending injury. Stefan de Vrij has a less serious injury but it has ruled him out of the World Cup. The luckiest was Justin Kluivert who had only recently returned from injury. Some may wonder why Brian Brobbey is in the team, but ever since he transferred to Sunderland, Brobbey has worked extremely hard on both his fitness and shooting, two areas that he was severely lacking while at Ajax. I watched a video of Brobbey shooting at training. It was very impressive.

Iconic Orange bus arrived in the United States for 2026 World Cup after weeks-long journey
The iconic Orange bus arrived in the United States for the World Cup, which begins for the Dutch national team on June 14 in Dallas. Japan will be the opponent. The bus was loaded onto a ship in Zeebrugge, Belgium in midApril and has now arrived in Galveston, about 500 kilometers from Dallas. The Orange bus will drive ahead of the crowd during the famous marches by Dutch national team fans.
The bus will travel to all host cities for the Dutch national team. After the match against Japan, the Netherlands will face Sweden in Houston on June 20. The group stage will conclude on June 26 in Kansas City.
Frans Peeters
Frans Peeters has been traveling the world for 22 years as the driver of the Oranjebus for fan marches with Dutch supporters. The Oranjebus has become a household name among football fans in the Netherlands and far beyond. Before every match at a major tournament, the bus escorted
the procession of Orange fans to the stadium. Loud music is played and there is partying.
Peeters remembers the first time he drove the bus. “That was on the way to Portugal for the 2004 European Championship. We drove past a gas station, and along the side of the road, people were standing all over taking pictures of our bus. Even back then, it brought a smile to people’s faces.”
In the years that followed, people followed the iconic Oranjebus at tournaments all over the world. From South Africa to Brazil and from Andorra to Qatar. Since winning the 2017 European Championship on home soil, the Oranjebus has also traveled to women’s final tournaments, with the exception of the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Peeters cites last year’s European Championship in Germany as one of the highlights. The Orange Bus went around the world thanks to the hype generated by the song *Links Rechts* by Snollebollekes. Television stations from all over the world made a segment about the Orange March.
Dortmund (for the semi-finals) was particularly remarkable. 110,000 people jumping from left to right...
Oneindige gespreksstof.

In mijn huis is hetzelfde.

Behandeling wetsvoorstel dubbele nationaliteit wederom verschoven

Vragen over ETIAS

The embassy hosted an interactive discussion with representatives from countries that share a strong commitment to climate action, alongside Diplomats for Climate, to discuss climate governance and the decarbonisation of supply chains.
Dr Ruth Adler and Janaline Oh of Diplomats for Climate highlighted the importance of putting the “Just Transition” on the COP31 agenda. They shared their perspective: focusing on decarbonising supply chains makes the idea of a just transition clearer and shows concrete steps businesses can take to cut emissions.
This event builds on the momentum of the recent

Wetsvoorstel dubbele nationaliteit: UPDATE

Under the pear tree.
My grandfather, Willem Jan van de Wall Perné was my hero. I adored and loved him. Probably because like most grandparents, he loved me unconditionally.
He taught me to read and write before I started school. Once, when I was about five, I had to go to the fishmonger a few blocks away. Mum had given me a note and I carried a small basket. The floor in this shop was always wet and the woman and man wore clogs. I was fascinated by the large buckets of wriggling eels and basins with other fish. Probably harings.which littered the shop.
The fishmonger said to his wife, ’who’s that child?’ She replied ‘ she’s the granddaughter of the man with the cleft palate. Until that moment I had no idea that he had a cleft palate. In those days operations to fix his palate just didn’t exist. But I remember being overtaken by anger with those people for speaking about him with such little respect. Later when food became scarce, Opa learned that a butcher was selling meat stock and sausages. I went with him. On the way home he carried the jug with

stock and a big sausage in the other hand. A teenage boy ran behind us and went for the sausage. Opa dropped the jug and slapped the boy and saved the sausage. We lost most of the stock.
My mother’s mother was a large woman with enormous breasts. Her dementia had started when they came to live with us. She wore dark clothes and just seemed to sit. Her cleavage was a mystery to me. I thought she had a cut through the middle of her body and tried at all times to look down there. She didn’t speak much although once she told me when I had an itchy bite, to lick it and then put a cross on it with my nail. It would stop the itch. She was superstitious about cats crossing her path on Monday morning, walking under a ladder, unfolding a umbrella inside and putting shoes on the table. There were probably many more. Mum inherited those fears and passed them onto me. Only last week a neighbour rode her bike, a black cat crossed her path and she landed in hospital. This proves how right my grandmother was. My mother told me once that her mother had started to
forget things when she was in her fifties and that the family became impatient with her. I was always under the impression that my mother was irritated by her mother. Nowadays at 98 she speaks often about her mother. She tells me that her mother was a fabulous cook and dinner at their home was most important. The table was always set with a white linen tablecloth and white table napkins and everyone had their own napkin ring. Because mother’s brother Wim liked looking at himself in the mirror, my grandfather covered the dining room mirror with brown paper while they ate. Vanity was frowned on in those days. Mum’s memories are of a happy home. My grandmother was always cheerful and funny but also very theatrical. That’s the part which I think annoyed my mother. My grandmother was not religious but she often called on God while staring up to the heavens. For instance my uncle Wim, at a very young age, stowed away in a baker’s cart.

Eén been opgetrokken en armen over elkaar. Zijn haar als uit een ouderwets
jongensboek.
Ik grinnikte even.
Of mijn stalker?
Hoeveel toeval is toevallig?
Of....

These are all mantra’s who are sometimes receited during yoga classes.
OM I sing mostly as they tell me that thats the sound of the universe.
Thats a place where I like to be connected to.
For me that connection is the connection with nature. The ground, the air, the water, the sun. While receiting the sound OM I can feel one with the sound and one with the feeling of one with nature.
And by feeling one with nature , I can feel really small, but on the same time also the feeling of the connection to so much bigger then ourselves.
Meditation tip from Ajahn Brahm.
The other day I was listening to Ajahn Brahm, a buddhist monk, and he tried to explain that just focusing on your breathing for meditation isn’t that easy. You exelly need to do a little bit more marketing for your breath.
He explains in his podcast the idea to market your breathing as follows.
When breathing in you think about getting the air from the trees and then giving back the air to the same trees.
Or you think about the fresh air you get in and your air out.
For me by doing that it is easier to follow the in and the out breath. Does it help you? Doing this step before just focussing on breath?

T here is a remembering that sits beyond self-improvement, personal transformation or the latest spiritual practice.
Within many Indigenous ways of knowing, we are not taught to discover ourselves by escaping our body and life, but by returning into deeper relationship within it.
We come to know who we are through Dadirri - deep listening.
Through kinship with land, country and body as one .
Through the elements, their medicine and how we are alchemically made from each one.
Through seasons and cycles; death and rebirth.
Through story.
Through the stars and navigating through our spirit-soul in relation to the Earth.
Through community; in our roles and responsibilities.
Through silence and stillness.
Through noticing what sings us and what brings us alive through its medicine.
Nature often reflects truths back to us that the mind cannot reach.
The river does not force itself to flow.
The tree does not compare itself to another tree.
The stars continue to move in relationship with one another, each carrying their own place and purpose.
Many of us have spent years carrying roles, expectations, responsibilities, and identities that slowly move us away from our own inner knowing. We become who we needed to be rather than remembering who we have always been.
This journey is not about becoming someone else.
It is an invitation to return.
To remember your own song. To harmonise.
To listen to your body.
To reconnect with your place within the greater ecosystem of life.
To explore the wisdom that already lives within you.
My role is not to tell you who you are.
My role is to help create a space where you can remember that for yourself.
And hold the coherent resonance of truth, which unlocks the remembrance within you.
We are about to embark on the journey. Are you coming with us?

about Hudson’s early life; even his exact birth date is not known. Some sources say around about the 1560s and others say later.? However he is thought to have spent many years at sea, beginning as a cabin boy and gradually working his way up to ship’s captain. Therefore, we may surmise that his early life was not that easy and he may have run away to sea at a very early
Hudson sailed on 1st May with a crew of ten men and a boy on the 80 ton Hopewell. They reached the east coast of Greenland on 14th June, coasting it northward until the 22nd. Here they named a headland “Young’s Cape”, a very high mount near it “Mount of God’s Mercy” and landed at “Hold with Hope”. After turning east, they sighted “Newland” (now Spitsbergen) on the 27th, near the mouth of the great bay, Hudson later simply named the “Great Indraught” (Isfjorden). On 14th July, they entered what Hudson later in the voyage named “Whales Bay” (Krossfjorden and Kongsfjorden), naming the northwestern point “Collins Cape” (Kapp Mitra) after his boatswain, William Collins.

ward passage to the Far East - an inlet that would lead to a river across America and into the Pacific. This was contrary to the orders of the Heeren XVll.
Was this VOC Explorer actually a spy for the British?
By Monica de Knecht
The name Hudson is used prolifically in North America and Canada. Not only on Hudson River, Hudson Strait, Hudson’s Bay and the Hudson’s Bay Company; but on numerous towns, bridges and schools. Sir Henry Hudson was an English explorer who made two attempts, on behalf of English merchants to find a prospective Northwest Passage to Cathay (today’s China), via a route above the Arctic Circle. However what he is mainly known for is laying the foundation for the Dutch colonisation of the region, as on his third voyage he was employed by the Dutch East India Company. Most sources are quite vague

age.
1607 VOYAGE In 1607, the Muscovy Company of England (also known as the Russian Company, as it was a body of English merchants trading with Russia); hired him to find a northerly route to the Pacific Coast of Asia. This was in the time that the Dutch and the English were battling each other for northwest routes. The general consensus of the time was that because the sun shone for three months in the northern latitudes in the summer; the ice would melt and a ship could make it across the top of the world.

Sailing north they reached as far north as Hakluyt’s Headland. His expedition returned to Tilbury Hope on the Thames on the 15th September.
1608 VOYAGE In 1608, the English merchants of the East India and Muscovy Companies again sent Hudson in the Hopewell on another attempt at a passage to the Indies, this time to the east around northern Russia. Leaving London on 22nd April, the ship travelled almost 2500 miles, making it to Novaya Zemlya, well above the Arctic
VOC VOYAGE Dutch involvement in the exploration of North America began almost accidentally in the spring of 1609, when the Heeren XVll, the highest authority of the United East India Company (VOC), heard through Jacob Le Maire of the expertise of the English navigator Henry Hudson and engaged him to try to find a safe passage to the wealthy Spice Islands in the East. At the time, many geographers believed that a short and safe “northeast passage” to Asia could be found that would make it possible to avoid the long trip around the Cape of Good Hope. As the English would not back him, due to 2 unsuccessful voyages, the ambitious Hudson had no qualms in working for the British East India Company’s main trading rival. Hudson left Amsterdam on April 6, 1609, aboard the Halve Maen, a small, eightyton yacht with a crew of eighteen sailors. Sailing along the coast of Norway, he reached the North Cape on May 5. He was fearful of another setback in the Arctic waters and he was worried about quarrelling among the Dutch and English sailors on his crew, so he made a bold decision to head westward toward North America, following a map that his friend Captain John Smith had shown him. (The same Captain who was captured by the Powhatan native Indians and saved by the daughter of the chief, Pocohontas). There Hudson hoped to find a west-

Hudson made landfall on Labrador and then began to head south along the coast. He entered Chesapeake Bay and stopped briefly at the mouth of the Delaware River before turning north again. In early September he entered what later would come to be called New York Harbor and the Hudson River. Still searching for a passage to the East, the Halve Maen sailed almost as far north as present-day Albany before Hudson turned back, convinced by the increasingly shallow water that the river would not lead to the open sea. Although disappointed that he was unable to find the fabled route to Asia, Hudson was impressed by the wealth of the New World. The ship’s log describes a country teeming with beaver, deer, and otter and dotted with Indian villages that cultivated corn and beans.
ARRESTED BY THE BRITISH
Rather curiously, on the way back to the Netherlands, Hudson stopped in England, where he was arrested for sailing under another nation’s flag, considered treason at the time. He and his crew stayed in England while the Dutch ship and the Dutch sailors in the crew went home, apparently with Hudson’s record of the voyage. This original was not seen by the English again. However, parts of it were quoted and reproduced in Dutch books in 1625. Only

A neighbour saw him disappear, the baker unaware. My grandmother yelled for God at the top of her voice and Wim was eventually returned. Another story which I love is when Jaap, mother’s other brother went fishing with a friend. Wim was allowed to go as well. Jaap would have been nine and Wim six. Wim went out of sight to play and Jaap told me that he and his friend saw Wim floating past them. They were just able to grab him and pull him out. Took him home where my grandmother howled thanks to God. Mum also told me that before she was twelve my grandmother left home several times, going back to her mother, my great-grandmother. Each time she stayed away for some weeks. Mum never knew the reason for her leaving and says that when she came back it was a feast. My grandfather brought home patisseries and everyone was happy again. After my father, your great-grandfather, died, I learned that my father’s mother had worked for my mother’s mother. For many years, twice a week she came to do the washing and the ironing. This
was news to me. My mother told me that’s how she came to meet my father. Apparently she used to listen to the two women talking and learned that the son Johan was a worry. Political, had different girlfriends, in trouble with the police during public demonstrations and ran a bookshop with banned books. My mother was fascinated and eventually met him. When I was four I became very ill with an infection in both ears which resulted in a mastoidectomy where bone was removed behind each ear. The specialist was called Dr Weissman. The hospital was religious. On the form under religion my parents filled in ‘no religion’ causing the matron to treat me as a child of Satan. At first I was pretty sick. There were no antibiotics and my mother was told she could visit when she wished. Only later she discovered that it meant I had not long to live. I was there for about a month. While getting better, I contacted scarlet fever and was moved from a ward back into isolation. Finally back into a ward Mum brought in blue slippers with zippers. I remember only
one nurse who was nice. Every morning the matron would come in and give each child a lolly, wrapped in white paper with a picture of the fruit on it. She would stop at the end of my bed and say, ‘Marja doesn’t get sweets, because she has wet her bed.’ I was four.
The hospital had a large playroom. I remember a rocking horse, small chairs, a doll’s house and I loved it. One day I decided to change things. I moved the furniture, dragged the rocking horse and doll’s house and landed in deep trouble with Matron. After I came home, for a while my mother took me to Dr Weissman’s surgery where he extracted bits of splintered bone left behind my ears after the operation. Mother said I screamed with pain.
An earlier memory when I was three? My parents had gone on a holiday to Belgium and I stayed with my paternal grandparents. They had two boys, Johan, my father, and Arie, his brother. When those boys were sixteen my grandmother had another child, who was only eight years older than me. Maria Binnendijk called Rita. That

particular day Rita had a friend to play. My grandmother went out to do some shopping and told us to behave and not to jump on the couch and she wouldn’t be long. Rita and her friend jumped on the couch. My parents had instilled in me that honesty was better than Godliness and anything else. When Oma came back I told her that Rita had jumped on the couch. I thought I was being truthful. I don’t remember what Oma said. She probably thought I was a horrible telltale. But I do remember very clearly when Oma left the room, Rita pushing me on the same couch, putting a pillow over my face and sitting on

me. Overtaken by panic and fear I remember kicking and struggling. I lived and it probably taught me that honesty is not always the best policy. But I loved being there. Early in the morning Rita and I sat in front of the fire while Oma toasted bread on a long fork for us on the belly of the stove. I slept in my father’s old room which had a sloping ceiling. On the wall were four large wooden boxes with glass covers behind which were pinned colourful butterflies. They bothered me. When I told my grandmother I saw one move, she said, ‘Ach kind. Doe niet zo raar. Child don’t be silly.’
After the war Canadian and American soldiers seemed to be in Holland for quite a time. They gave us, my friends and me, chewing gum and chocolate. The chewing gum was new to us. It came in strips in a red/brown colour with a mint taste. I loved it and when I got a piece, I would chew it for days, carefully sticking it to my bed while I slept. We the the

THE FORMER DUTCH EAST INDIES THE END OF AN ERA
The Japanese invasion and Occupation
This is my personal account of a facet of the great changes that took place in the Far East at the end of World War 2 when the colonies of several European countries gained their independence. It took place in the former Dutch East Indies between the years 1942 and 1949 when the state of Indonesia came into being My 17th birthday on the 1st January 1942 was really a non-event. The whole country was very jittery with all the news broadcast through the NIROM, the Dutch radio station at the time in Bandoeng (current spelling: Bandung). The Japanese advance -through Indo- China and the Malaysian peninsula progressed so fast that we hardly had

Norman Jansen: Remigratieervaringsdeskundige, auteur, expat, ondernemer, medeoprichter wensambulance Curaçao (FADK), oprichter van: ‘Norman Jansen, thuis in (r)emigreren’.
Weer thuis

And the Blue Wave from tiny Curaçao is making World Cup history!

The Dutch state faces having to write off €170 million in unpaid student debts because it lost touch with former students who moved abroad.
Last year around 21,000 Dutch citizens who owed student debt could not be traced by the student finance agency DUO, which has the responsibility to reclaim unpaid debts and fines.
The cabinet wants to change the law to make it a legal obligation to provide up-to-date contact details to DUO, either in person or through a friend or relative.
People who move abroad would still have to provide a forwarding address and DUO would make at least two attempts to contact them.
The education ministry is also investigating how it can exchange more information with other countries about Dutch citizens living elsewhere. The bill is currently the subject of an online consultation before the draft version is sent to parliament.
Currently the agency is unable to contact someone for five years the debt and fines are written off.
In 2018 the government had to abandon €76 million owed by around 20,000 former students, a figure that more than doubled last year to €170 million.
The government is planning to raise the minimum age for sex workers to 21 to prevent vulnerable youngsters being forced into the trade.
Successive Dutch governments have tried since 2009 to increase the legal age from 18. Amsterdam city council already enforces a limit of 21 under a local by-law.
Justice minister David van Weel said he wanted to raise the minimum age nationwide, along with other measures such as making it a criminal offence to earn money from illegal sex work.
“We agreed in the coalition agreement that vulnerable sex workers need to be better protected, which is why I want to raise the age limit as soon as possible,” Van Weel said.
“I also want to see if we can in-
troduce a pimping ban to tackle bad actors who take advantage of vulnerable sex workers who are often working illegally in the Netherlands.”
In 2019 the government tried to introduce a compulsory registration scheme for sex workers which would require them to prove they were over 21, but the plan was criticised by sex workers’ representatives on privacy grounds. The bill was eventually voted down in the Senate.
A decade earlier Fleur Agema, an MP for the right-wing populist PVV party, proposed raising the minimum age to protect young girls from so-called “loverboys” who lured them into prostitution after their 18th birthday.
The idea was taken up by caretaker justice minister Hirsch Ballin in the last days of Jan Peter Balkenende’s administration, but it failed to reach the statute books.
Care employers in the Netherlands have grown so understaffed that they can no longer supervise enough trainees to replace them, according to the training and labour-market body SBB.
The number of vocational (mbo) students unable to find an internship has roughly doubled in two years to 4,695, statistics from the organisation’s spring report show. The worst shortages on courses for care assistants and social workers.
Without an internship, mbo students cannot graduate. Without enough graduates, the care sector cannot close its widening workforce gap.
Vicious circle
SBB chair Hannie Vlug told broadcaster NOS “This is exactly the vicious circle” the organisation had been pointing out for years. Care employers face such severe personnel shortages that they have no staff free to train newcomers.
The Netherlands is forecast to have a shortage of 266,000 care workers by 2035. The 4,695 unplaced students are part of a total of 467,329 enrolled in mbo courses nationwide, most of whom have found a placement.
But the gap is concentrated on the more school-led track,
where students must find their own internships, and on courses for software developers, teaching assistants, and business services assistants alongside the care professions.

Refugees sleep outside as accommodation crisis worsens
Several asylum seekers were forced to sleep outside the Ter Apel refugee centre on Wednesday night because there was no space for them inside, broadcaster NOS reported.
In total, 51 people were taken to other accommodation in nearby Stadskanaal but dozens of others who turned up after the bus left at 10.30 pm had to sleep outdoors.
All new asylum seekers have to report to the Ter Apel location to start their application process but the centre only has space for some 2,000 people and is constantly full. On Wednesday night, 2,240 people slept at the centre.
A Dutch archaeologist who thinks he may have discovered the grave of French musketeer d’Artagnan in a church near Maastricht, was arrested on Wednesday after refusing to hand over some of the bones to the city council.
Wim Dijkman, who has since been released, was picked up by police after personally fetching a portion of an arm bone and the remains of two teeth from researchers in Germany earlier in May.
He claims Maastricht council, which technically owns the bones, had asked for them to be sent back from laboratory tests by post, a decision which he said was far too risky.
In March, archaeologists said they may have discovered the skeletal remains of Charles de Batz de Castelmore, otherwise known as the fourth musketeer d’Artagnan, at the church.
D’Artagnan, the leader of King Louis XIV’s elite corps of gentlemen, died in battle in 1673 during the French siege of Maastricht, probably from a wound in the chest caused by a musket bullet.
The find may also prove a theory put forward by French historian Odile Bordaz in 2008, that d’Artagnan could have been buried “quickly as was usual in times of war” in the church adjacent to the French military camp in Wolder.
Two Italian nationals have each been fined €15,000 for smuggling rare birds of prey and other animals through the Netherlands.
Ricardo C and Matta S were caught with a trailer full of birds, including various hawks, pink cockatoos, Canada geese, as well as small-clawed otters, prairie dogs and other exotic animals near Apeldoorn in 2024. Several of the animals, totalling 100, were on the protected species list.
The two claimed to have bought the animals in good faith because “they love birds” but failed to produce the required documentation.
Dutch government rules out using EU funding to pay for abortions
Abortion campaigners have criticised the decision by health minister Sophie Hermans not to use European funding to support women who travel to the Netherlands because the procedure is not available in their own countries.
The EU agreed to finance cross-border abortions last February after a citizens’ initiative, My Voice, My Choice, gathered more than a million signatures across the bloc.
The money would be provided through the European Social Fund, under which the Netherlands receives €400 million to spend on anti-poverty programmes.
But in a letter to parliament, Hermans said she had no plans to redistribute the funding so that women from countries such as Poland could receive subsidised abortions in the Netherlands, either now or in future years.
Dutch citizens with foreign roots are voting in increasing numbers and even exceeding the turnout of locals without a migration background, according to an analysis of voter behaviour at the 2025 general election.
This, the report’s authors say, is a reversal of long-standing trends that have shown political participation among newcomers to be low.
Floris Vermeulen, a political scientist at the University of Amsterdam and one of the authors of the report, told Dutch News the findings point, in part, to a general increase in the influence of the international community on electoral outcomes – even when many still do not have the right to vote because they don’t have Dutch passports.
“We know from decades of political science research that voting is not simply an individual act. It is also a social activity shaped by conversations with family members, friends, colleagues, neighbours, and community networks,” he said.

De Spaanse koning at tapas

time to breathe.
I was at school at the Christelijk Lyceum in the 4th form in the town of Bandoeng on the isle of Java. I was also in the “Oranje Jeugd”, a patriotic youth movement from all the colleges in town to help the local government with the war effort. Soon all the schools were closed, as the invasion came very near. People everywhere were trying to flee the country, but where to? Only very few succeeded to get bookings to Australia, but the chances were nearly non- existent, since all kinds of transport were commandeered by the military command. I was instructed to be a driver for the civilian police and was placed under military command. This lasted only for a very short time as the invasion went extremely quickly and when the Japanese troops landed on the isle of Java, near- panic broke loose. There was only a token resistance as our planes, what little there was, had earlier been directed to Singapore and destroyed after heavy fighting. The Army was no match for the Japanese shock troops, which, by the way, were mainly Koreans. There was fighting on the approaches to the Bandoeng plateau, but all the Dutch forces were overrun in the second Japanese attack.
Later several well-known Japanese store owners, photographers and other wellknown identities were recognised among the Japanese officers of the invasion troops. It is at this time that the stories started of the enormous cruelties inflicted on all the people that stood in their way. It did not matter who it was or what it was, they behaved like nothing we had ever heard of, or perhaps only in our very early history books.
In the meantime, by about May 1942, the whole town of Bandoeng was under Japanese control. My father being a police officer, was sent home under house arrest till further notice. All the Dutch population lay low, not knowing what the future would hold. The expectations were very sombre after the little news we managed to hear over the radio. The physical treatment handed out by the Japanese troops was something we had never experienced. Even the Soendanese people, the ethnic people in that area, were completely taken by surprise and, of course, fear.
Anyway, the Dutch population and other European nationals did not have to wait very long. Orders came from the Japanese High Command that all Dutch and other Europeans had to be put away in separate female and male camps. We had to report to several points in the town with luggage that you only could carry and that included a camp mattress, cutlery, crockery and clothing. You had to bring papers which showed how far back your European lineage went.

If you had European parents, that was the end, in you went. I arranged to stay with my father. He could have stayed out, but because he had worked for the “enemy “as it was explained to us, he was interned. Our destination was a Roman Catholic convent called ‘’Maria Sterre der Zee”. It was a relatively large place, consisting of many small cells and bigger halls. In the middle was a large courtyard and all around it was a high bamboo fence with matting, two metres high so that we could not have outside contact. This was, however, broken by the insistence of the women from the outside, who in one way or another managed to get into contact with their relatives or friends inside. This did not mean that no-one got caught, far from that, especially in the beginning when the players of this game were still green. It resulted in several beatings, both for the party inside and outside. With the advance of time the outside people became so clever that we had a constant trickle of necessities coming in.
Every layer from the outside society was represented inside the camp, with the only difference that here were no class differences. You slept on the floor with about 75cm between the mattresses. At the end of the mattress were all your possessions stacked on top of each other. No mosquito nets were allowed, so privacy was non-existent in the sleeping quarters. Bathrooms in general were one room with showers against the wall, no cubicles at all. The only priva-
cy you had was in the toilets. This type of life was so degrading, especially for those people who had lived in the higher society, that some were already spiritually broken before we even had started with the internment camp life. Many others got stronger every day, especially when the Japanese started to apply pressure. They came to the conclusion that the war would not end as quickly as they thought and that we were beginning to become expendable. As for the quality and quantity of our food, this became less and less. Internees had to do the kitchen work and they did a splendid job under very difficult circumstances, especially when the quantities became so small that the death figure started to climb. We ended up in this camp with a kind of porridge made from the cassava root, three times a day. The sickbay was, of course, overflowing with sick people so that the situation became untenable.
Rumours started to fly around that the camp would close and that we would be transferred.
This rumour was the only one that was true among all the others. The only thing not known was the new destination, but we would see that on the day we were transported. Suddenly, one evening after the meal, a roll call was ordered. After the normal bowing etc., we were told that we were going to a place which, if we were to believe the Japanese camp commandant, would be a first- class holiday resort. Anyway, being used to all this oratory, we fi-

nally knew that tomorrow we would get a glimpse of the outside world, and we did. The sick were transported in open trucks, which surprised us all. We could load all our meagre possessions in small carts and at seven o’clock the next morning the caravan of crippled and starving caricatures of human beings were ready to start the journey towards the unknown.
When the gates swung open we could not believe our eyes. Hundreds of women, pushing and fighting with the Japanese guards, trying to give us parcels, messages and shouting messages. For a moment it was pandemonium and the sight of the women being bashed and pushed by the guards made the men upset too. Finally we came to an agreement with the Japanese officer in charge to let the women walk with us for a kilometre and have some conversation. This settlement was conveyed to the women and so in some orderly fashion we proceeded. The latest personal news was exchanged, good and bad. We also had the chance to talk briefly with my mother who was in tears about the condition we were in, especially my father. After a while, when we had reached the end of the kilometre, the women were held back and we proceeded. This was the last time we would see my mother till September 1945.

I also had myself that exact feeling seeing that building as a new migrant. Now he is building his vision next to that exact spot.

fragments of his journal were ever reprinted. The originals were sold at auction in the early 19th century and after this vanished.
At first, the Dutch were rather slow in exploiting Hudson’s discoveries in the New World. Under the terms of its charter, the VOC was legally bound to concentrate its commercial activities in the Far East and thus was not very keen to cross the Atlantic. But these restrictions did not stop individual Dutch merchants and adventurers from reacting to the favourable reports of the New World that circulated in the Netherlands following Hudson’s return. Soon, individual ships were crossing the ocean to trade for furs with local Indian tribes. The most important Dutch navigator to follow in Hudson’s path was Captain Adriaen Block, who explored New York and southern New England in 1613-14. for the VOC. Block’s ship, the Tiger, was accidentally destroyed in a fire in New York Harbor, whereupon he and his crew built huts and a new ship, the Restless, which Block later used to explore the coast of Long Island. He sailed past a small island off the coast of Rhode Island and charted the location dubbing it “Adriaen’s Eylant”. Today, the island is known as Block Island. In 1614 the Dutch StatesGeneral consented to a request by several merchants, primarily from Amsterdam, to form the New Netherland Company and to grant the company an exclusive three-year right to trade in the territory that for the first time was called Nieuw Nederlandt. The new enterprise was such an overwhelming success that merchants excluded from the trade protested fiercely. In response to these complaints, the monopoly was not continued when it came up for renewal in 1618.
TROUBLE WITH THE NATIVES
The primary record of the voyage – and the only surviving English record – is the journal of Robert Juet, who had sailed previously with Hudson as a mate and would again in 1610. Juet noted that there were terrible fights with the natives. The crew got drunk, killed, looted and even kidnapped. Both the English and Dutch crewmen were antagonistic towards the native
Americans. They were also rather scared of what they termed, their savagery. This would, unfortunately, cause later relations between the natives and the European settlers, most especially in the Wild West 1800s.
The 3rd voyage of Hudson’s, was the first to record the European discovery of today’s New York State and as Henry Hudson explored under the Dutch flag, the majority of the crew members were Dutch and the following voyages were Dutch; the Netherlands decided to start a colony and for their countrymen to settle around today’s Manhattan Island, thereby founding the New World Colony. Historians and geographers are often at ‘loggerheads’ as to just what landmarks Juet identified.
(Ian Chadwick)
ESPIONAGE FOR THE BRITISH ? Dutch cartographer and publisher, Hessel Gerritszoon wrote that many in Holland believed Hudson “purposely missed the correct route to the western passage because he was unwilling to benefit Holland and the directors... by such a discovery” and Hudson was secretly working for the English, to get the information at the cost of the Dutch. The argument is further ignited as, there is no other good explanation as to why Hudson broke his contract with the Dutch and turned away from his voyage north, to sail across the ocean and explore the coast of the New World. Also why did he sail into England, on his way home, instead of continuing to nearby Amsterdam.

I was surprised that Wout Weghorst was selected given his recent form after a devastating injury. I thought Koeman might have opted for Zian Flemming, who performed extemely well for a struggling Burnley. He scored 11 goals from 29 Permier League matches while Weghorst has scored 9 from 34 Eredivisie games. It may have been Jerdy Schouten’s insistence that he would not play with Ajax players that swayed Koeman’s decision.
Koeman has selected seven backs, eight midfielders and eight forwards.
Netherlands (0) v Algeria (1)
This was the first loss for the Netherlands since 2024 and a shock result. Despite the Netherlands being in control for most of the first half and fielding their best eleven in the first 45 minutes, they struggled to score. After an excellent build-up, Malen hit the post in the 7th minute and had another good chance later in the half. Algeria had a good chance to score but for Mick Van de Ven threw his body in the way. The Dutch did play some impressive football in the first half almost scoring on several occasions through Malen (4 chances), Gakpo (one chance and a great save), and some good runs down the right hand side by Summerville who was the best player on the field in the first half. Unfortunatley, he was substituted for the second half. The Dutch should have been 3-0 up by the end of the second half.
Koeman made a lot of changes in the second half, including Weghorst at centre forward who struggled to make any impact. The biggest disappointment was Martin de Roon who seemed to struggle at this level. Too often he gave the ball away in his defensive half, especially in dangerous areas. Whether or not Koeman is regretting his decision to replace the outspoken Jerdy Schouten, remains to be seen. However, it wasn’t just De Roon giving the ball away. They seemed intent on doing this for ten minutes early in the second half.
Justin Kluivert was the best Dutch player in the second half and had an excellent strike on goal which was well
saved. There were other good shots but from mainly outside the box by Depay, Reijnders and Malen, but the Algerian keeper was too good.
While the Koemen field his second eleven in the second half, Algeria brought on their best eleven. Hadj Moussa (Feyenoord) who scored a wonderful goal in the 85th minute, was their best player and arguably the best on the field.
The biggest concern for the Dutch is their inability to control possession in crucial areas especially in their defensive half. If they can’t fix this, they will struggle to get past the first stage. The last two friendly games, (Ecquador 1Netherlands 1), the Dutch have scored just one goal. Although it was a friendly game where new players and tactics were tried, it was hardly an impressive performance.
By contrast, Japan has defeated Scotland, England and Iceland, all with a 1 nil result. Sweden was defeated 3-1 by Norway and they had a 2-2 draw with Greece. Austria defeated Tunisia 1-0, Canada was a nil all result, and a 1-0 victory over Haiti. The Oranje’s biggest test will be their first match against Japan.
If you enjoy watching the game in a crowded atmosphere of almost exclusively Dutch supporters, turn up to the City Tattersalls Club Sports Bar at 199 Castlereagh Street, Sydney. Of course World Cup games will be on at most clubs in most regions. It is also on SBS, SBS on demand and Stan. Local venues in Melbourne include the Dutch Club, Abel Tasman in Carnegie. In Wollongong, games can be seen from the Fraternity Club, and Dapto Leagues Club.

Davy Klaasen from Ajax summed up their season. “Pff, yeah… The whole season was tough and then that support today… Just the love you feel from the people… I think it was a rotten season for all of us. If you get to end it like this, then the love is still there. You don’t want a season like that again,” said an emotional Klaassen, who could no longer hold back his tears.
Klaasen, the Ajax captain, made it clear that he wants to defend the colours of Ajax next season. “I want to be a part of it. I want to make Ajax, Ajax again.”
by Henry van Zanden
Klaassen was speaking after their crucial match against Utrecht at Kras Stadion, Volendam that decided which club would represent the Eredivisie in the Conference League. The match seemed to sum up their season with the bar and the post hit three times. They had 22 shots on goal to Utrecht’s 12. Ajax dominated with 70% possession but still they could not score until extra time when Davy Klaasen scored in the 96th minute. However, Utrecht sequalised in the 106th minute to send the match to penalties which Ajax won 4-3.
Ajax announced their new Spanish coach, Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz. During his intereview, he proclaimed that, “Together we can make Ajax compete for trophies again, in Europe and the Netherlands.”
he relegation battle is even more intense than the top four, with six teams still having a chance of finishing 16th while only four can finish 17th.
Fortuna Sittard - 36 points Fortuna only need one point from their remaining three games to avoid relegation. with a six-point lead over Telstar. However, their next game is against Feyenoord, followed by Zwolle and Utrecht. None of these matches will be easy.
PEC Zwolle - 34 points Zwolle have an easier run home with their next match against relegated Heracles, then Fortuna Sittard with their final match against Feyenoord.
Excelsior - 31 points Excelsior are in real danger of facing the drop. In 14th place, they sit just one point above Telstar, but they have a sixpoint lead over NAC Breda. They face Groningen and Volendam. It could come down to the final match against Sparta Rotterdam.
FC Volendam - 31 points They face Heerenveen, Excelsior, and then Telstar at home. They will need to win at least two of these games to be safe. The battles against fellow cellar dwellers, Excelsior and Telstar, will surely be fiery with so much at stake for both teams.
NAC Breda - 25 points
NAC look certain to return to the second tier unless they win all three of their remaining matches against Utrecht, Heerenveen, and AZ Alkmaar. As they do not play against any relegation rivals, they will not be able to close the gap by taking points from teams above them.
Heracles - 19 points
Heracles is already relegated. In their final matches in the Eredivisie, they will play Zwolle, Telstar, and Groningen.
The Eredivisie relegation playoffs will involve the 16th placed team and six teams from the Eerste Divisie (2nd tier). The matches will be played over two legs (home and away). Currently, the top six are ADO Den Haag (89), Cambuur (81), Willem II (68), De Graafschap (63), Almere (58) and, in sixth place, RKC Waalwijk. Due to a peculiarity in the Eeerste Divisie league, Roda JC (8th on the table) was allowed to compete in the playoffs due to their winning a period title. The Eerste Divisie is divided into periods based on consecutive matches. Winners of these periods, along with the top-ranked teams in the final table that have not already secured automatic promotion, participate in the promotion/ relegation playoffs, which is called the Nacompetitie. RKC Waalwijk reached the next round of the promotion play-offs at the expense of Roda JC and will face Willem II in the second round. Roda JC appeared set to win 0-1 at the Mandemakers Stadium on Friday evening, but Jesper Uneken scored the equalizer in the very last seconds. No goals were scored in extra time, after which the Waalwijk side won the penalty shootout.
