SUBSCRIPTION CHANGES

Liefs Carole

Verhalen uit Monbulk , Dandenongs isolated, far from neighbours and family, while the children travelled to Lilydale for school. A treasured reconnection with a school friend in Monbulk, Leny Broekhof, brought comfort and joy. After six months. Piet became foreman at the van Berkel Brothers bulb farm in monbulk. The family moved first to Moores Road, then to a house on the van Berkel property. Life improved living closer to community and shops Life revolved around church, work family and the Monbulk Dutch community. Piet and Dora attended English lessons with Lida and Nell after hours at Monbulk Primary School as part of a government initiative Education Department Adult Migrant Education program. They graduated in April in 1967, almost four years to the day of arriving in Australia. Het tweede verhaal is : Van Horick In march 1963, Piet (Peter) and Dora van Horick left Hillegom, the Netherlands for a better future for their family of nine children. Life after the war had been hard and Australia offered hope. The family departed on the SS Willem Ruys on 16 March 1963, leaving behind heartbroken parents. most of their possesiions were packed into a single wooden

crate and shipped separately. They arrived at Station Pier, Melbourne, on April 14, 1963 and travelled by red reattler train for six hours to the Bonegilla Migrant Centre. Bonegilla was hot, dusty and confroning. The family lived in basic converted army huts with bunk beds, minimal furniture, and shared amentities. It was an overwhelming cultural shock. A Dutch immigrand helped to communicate with staff. Two days later Piet left Bonegilla to begin work at Tesselaar’s Tulip Farm in Silvan, and to prepare housing in Burleigh. Six weeks ater, once their crate arrived, Dora and the children joined him at Burleigh, Dora felt deeply

Seven years before retiring, Piet and Dora bought their first home in Moxhams Road, Monbulk, welcoming visiting relatives and wathing generations grow. Piet worked hard to provide for this famiy. Dora held the family together. Her greatest wish that her children remained close, became the enduring legacy of their migration story. Piet and Dora van Horick had nine children and 24 grandchilderen. To date, there are 57 great grandchilderen. Piet passed away in June 1996, and Dora in February 1997.

Blijf NEE zeggen tegen fake grass

Gladiolen Gladiolen

Jorge Bolle

NL Radio in OZ:

Fake grass is plastic.

🌶️🥥 www.dutchcourier.com

Houses at the clogbarn in NSW

Enkhuizen Drommedaris (tower) Drommedaris is the southern gateway of the city of Enkhuizen. The building was erected as a defense at the entrance of the Oude Haven. The gun basement and the space on the ground floor date back to 1540 and were the original building. After the Eighty years war the building was raised to the shape we know now. This construction lasted from 1649 - 1657. Over the centuries the building was used as a storage of gunpowder, a prison, waiting barracs (under the gate) and also the first exhibition of the Zuiderzeemuseum took place in the building.

The Bossuhuizen - Hoorn

Nederhorst Den Berg

These buildings are a symbol of Hoorns past splendour.

Kasteel de Nederhorst

The bossuhuizen was named after the Spanish admiral defeated and taken prisoner aboard his own galleon “The inquisition” October 11, 1753. In the vicinity of Cale Hornby the fleets of the cities of Hoorn Enkhuizen and Monnikendam. The higlights of this battle are illustrated in the murals on these three buildings.

The oldest known mention of the castle dates from the 13th century. The castle was in a strategic position, on the border between Holland and Het Sticht. In 1672 it was set on fire by French troops, and a year later it was sold. It was then rebuilt as a square castle with a hexagonal tower on each corner and got its current appearacnce int he beginning of the 18th Century. The owners of the castle has changed hands many times and residents have even included third parties who stayed in the castle during the Second World War who had lost their homes as a result of war damage. After the

war the house was neglected and eventually became uninhabitable and in fact ready for demolition. In 1959 Mr. Jan Lourens Jonker purchased the building and restored it to its former glory. On 10th January 1971 shortly before the completion of the restoration a large fire broke out which destroyed majority of the building. Many thought this would be the end of the castle. But it was again restored to its former glory and has been in excellent condition since.

Cricket update ETPL

Julie Stalwood

The inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) has just concluded in Dublin. The league kicked off on August 26 at Voorberg CC, which was transformed with marquees and tiered seating and a perfect looking pitch. ETPL is comprised of six franchise teams. Amsterdam Flames co-owned by Steve Waugh and captained by former Netherlands captain Scott Edwards, featuring Steve Smith, Bas de Leede, Kyle Klein, Tim Pringle, Aryan Dutt and Max O’Dowd. Rotterdam Dockers co-owned and captained by Faf du Plessis and featuring Roelof Van de Merwe, Logan Van Beek, Michael Levitt, Ryan Klein, Vikramjit Singh and Saqib Zulfiqar. The other four teams are the Edinburgh Castle Rockers, Belfast Wolves, Dublin Guardians and Glasgow Cosmic. Each team can have four overseas players with the remainder being made up from local sides. The first phase of games was in Voorberg, then moving to Dublin. Each team plays the other side twice with a total of 30 matches.

Van Zweden naar Nederland

It was a very crowded points table at the end of the 30 matches with the top four teams tied on 13 points. Positions were then determined by net run rate. Leaving Edinburgh on top to go through to the final. Amsterdam flames played off against Belfast Wolves to see who would join Edinburgh Castle Rockers in the final. Belfast Wolves co-owner and captain Glenn Maxwell had a brilliant game against the Amsterdam Flames taking four wickets and securing the win. The final was played on September 20 in Dublin with Edinburgh Castle Rockers taking home the trophy. Rockers passed Wolves score of 150/5 in

Under the pear tree. memoirs by Marja Rogers

BATHURST Bathurst migrant camp19481952, took over where an army camp had left off. During those four years some 80,000 people stayed there. We alighted from the train in Kelso, a few kilmetres from Bathurst into waiting busses. It was dusk when we arrived at the camp where a boom gate opened to let us in. The camp consisted of twelve blocks numbered from A to L. I think there were two Dutch blocks. Each had rows of barracks, a kitchen, a dining hall as well as toilet and washing facilities. We were allocated to block ‘D’ and were given two rooms. Each room had two beds, a cupboard, a small table and two chairs. Linen, towels and a huge pile of grey blankets were waiting for us on the beds. Mum told me later that on that warm November day she could not have imagined that the nights would get so cold. Our barrack was the last one in line and bordered grassland with the odd tree here and there. The next morning we were woken by a strange sound. When we looked we saw a naked man, except for a red pair of shorts, hanging in a

tree yelling out a sort of dirge. My mother was immediately convinced that we were being attacked by natives. Later we found out that the poor man was from the Polish camp and was mentally damaged and harmless. The canteen was in the middle of the camps. It figures largely in my memory. It sold among other things, white bread, real butter and flower smelling honey. To this day I close my eyes and imagine Mum spreading butter and honey from a large jar on a square of white bread. We were supposed to eat in the communal dining hall, a huge tent with tables and chairs inside and outside. But within a day we discovered not only thousands of flies in that tent but there were maggots in the meals. My parents then bought an electric cooking ring as did most of the other women in the camp. It was for me and most probably the other children a fabulous holiday. I recall on hot days walking on dusty roads alongside the camps to get to the open cinema. I can’t remember what films we saw but since I had only ever seen ‘Bambi’, anything would have

made me happy. We waded in creeks, looking for gold, which glittered and teased us in the sand. We were excited by cautions of this being a dangerous country with poisonous snakes and red-back spiders. We took lifts on the back of trucks to Bathurst where we swam in the town’s swimming pool. I had no idea how difficult life was for my parents. My father found work in the local cannery, digging up asparagus. He stuck it out for two weeks. His hands blistered, bloodied and became infected. His enthusiasm about this land of milk and honey was lessening with the reality.

NELSON BAY I don’t know why we moved to Nelson Bay. Perhaps my father thought it was closer to Sydney. Nelson Bay immigration camp was again for us children paradise. The camp was a stone’s throw from the pier. We fished with green line wound around corks. We swam and I remember the water being crystal clear. The dining room was miles better than the one in

THE CURIOUS HISTORY OF THE VOC MERCENARY REGIMENT DE MEURON

of the Meuron regiment, resulting in several sailors being shot, causing strife for the Dutch, as nobody was in control.

By Monica de Knecht Charles Daniel de Meuron was the founder of a French-Swiss Mercenary regiment named the Regiment de Meuron, employed in the service of the Dutch East India Company in Cape Town and Ceylon. (Now Sri Lanka). He was born in the French speaking Swiss Canton of Neuchātel and enlisted as an ensign in the Swiss Marine Regiment de Hallwyl in 1756 at the age of eighteen. Having distinguished himself, he was awarded the Croix du mérite militaire. Always on the lookout for talented mercenaries, Charles was contracted to the VOC, which allowed him to create his own regiment in 1781. The regiment was dispatched from France to Cape Town.

JOACHIM VAN PLETTENBERG break of smallpox at the lie d’Oleron, west of France. De Meuron lost 380 men and he had to make up his regiment with prisoners from jails in France. Originally the squad was made up mainly from Swiss and Germans. Now there were many French dissidents among the crew, to complicate matters for De Meuron. Added to that, a hurricane caused further delay and the

Things became more complex for Charles de Meuron, when the Governor of the Cape, Joachim van Plettenberg became besieged by a French-influenced Patriotic Movement (‘Patriotte beweging”). The free burgher colonists presented petitions in 1779 and 1782 to the Heeren XVll and in 1784 to the Staten-Generaal of the Netherlands. These petitions clearly demonstrated the

UNPOPULAR FOUNDER Now Charles Daniel may have been a very capable soldier, but he had a most unpleasant personality. The Dutch began to think that they’d made a big mistake to hire this volatile gentleman and considered that he was too friendly to the French. De Meuron was desperate to impress upon his Dutch superiors that he was totally against the French, but as the old fable says “Please all Please None” OUTBREAK OF SMALLPOX Before the regiment had left for the Cape, they had an out-

men were reduced to half rations for eighty days; 300 men got scurvy and died en route and twenty more died after reaching Cape Town. Some of the men defected to join the Boer farmers. De Meuron then claimed that he had stocked the ship with sufficient provisions. So there was another delay as the Dutch then held the ship at the port to investigate. Altercations then arose between the French sailors and the remaining members

problems between the French burghers and the VOC governor. They were angered by the restrictions put on them by the Company, in regards to free trade. De Meuron was caught in the middle by his angry regiment and van Plettenberg. His Regiment mutinied and van Plettenberg requested discharge from service to the VOC at the Cape. The Governor defended himself most admirably in a record and was dismissed with all

honours. He resigned in 14th February, 1785 and gratefully went back to the Netherlands, where he died eight years later at his Huis Windesheim, near Zwolle. Because of the disorder, the VOC moved the remainder of the regiment from Cape Town to Ceylon. DUTCH AND BRITISH TENSIONS AND THE BATAVIA REPUBLIC In the period 1788 – 1795, co-inciding with the bloody French Revolution, there was simmering relations between the Dutch and the British. After their conquest of India, the English planned to take over a dozen Dutch possessions in the region; Ceylon being the most valuable prize. Their big chance came when Napoleon took over France from the revolutionaries and, not only restored the monarchy, but had his eyes set on taking the whole of Europe and creating a French Empire. In the winter of 1794/95, Holland was overrun by the French Army and the English offered the Dutch Stathouder, Prince Willem V, refuge in England. After a short reign by Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck, as the Grand Pensionary; Napoleon put one of his brothers in charge of the Netherlands, naming it the Batavia Republic and the British were able to cripple Dutch trade and gain possession of their colonies. In Colombo, the mood was uncertain among the leaders. If they vested in the new Batavia Republic, they were a sitting target for the British

and remaining loyal to an exiled Stathouder was fraught with difficulty. Their Dutch Governor Iman Willem Falck died in 1785 after a short illness. He was succeeded by Willem Jacob van der Graaf, a most aggressive expansionist, who attempted to extend Dutch control well beyond the established limits. The VOC Council of the Indies in Batavia were fearful of van der Graaff beginning a full fledged war with the British and the Kandyan Kingdom. They ordered the Governor to abandon his foolish venture. Thereupon the arrogant van der Graaf resigned; being succeeded by a timid and wavering Jan Gerard van Angelbeek; actually van der Graaf’s father-in-law, who would become the last Dutch Governor of Ceylon. CHANGING OF LOYALTIES OF THE DE MEURON REGIMENT Prince Willem V, under the protection of the British, was pressurised by the British Foreign Minister, Lord Grenville, in 1795 to order van Angelbeek to put his forces, forts and warships under British ‘protection’. He should consider that the British troops belong …..to a power that is in friendship and alliance with their High Mightinesses the Governors of the VOC and who come to prevent the Colony from being invaded by the French

The British promised that, after the war, they would restore the colony straight away back to the Dutch. Van Angelbeek firstly accepted Prince Willem’s letter and agreed with the British presence on the island. Afterwards he rationalised that the Batavian Republic was considered sovereign of the colonies and therefore the Dutch troops should be ordered to resist British occupation, no matter how friendly the Brits were. However the Governor did not realise that the British had intrigued so much, undermining the VOC’s military capabilities. The defence of Dutch Ceylon was in the hands of European mercenaries, in particular the Regiment de Meuron, 1000 men strong, now two-thirds consisting of Swiss mercenaries. CHANGE OF ALLEGIANCE – CHANGE OF UNIFORM In a most extraordinary act on the 30th of March, 1795, the British secret agent, Hugh Cleghorn signed a contract with the founder and proprietor of the regiment Count CharlesDaniel de Meuron, to transfer his regiment into British service for the then princely sum of 6000 pounds sterling. So the Regiment deserted the VOC and the Governor, after only a token resistance, surrendered. The Dutch officers and soldiers felt betrayed, not by the British, but by the vacillating van Angelbeek. In anger, they turned their heavy guns on the Governor’s palace, to mark their displeasure with his capitulation. But in the end they had to lay down their arms. Pierre Frederick de Meuron, the brother of Count Charles de Meuron, promptly changed his blue Dutch uniform for the red coat of the British; thereupon being able to become the Military Governor of British Ceylon in September 1797, until he was relieved by Frederick North, the first British Governor. In 1798, Count Charles retired to Switzerland, leaving his regiment in the hands of his brother In 1799, the Regiment de Meuron fought against Tipu Sultan in the Battle of Seringapatam. The regimental flag had the symbols of a sword and a mulberry tree.

The sword represented military power, while the mulberry tree, from which tapa cloth was made; is thought to have indicated Charles de Meuron’s interest in objects of natural history. The regiment remained in India until 1806, co-incidentally the same year that Charles de Meuron died. FIGHTING FOR BRITAIN’S COLONIES The de Meuron regiment served in the fourth AngloMysore War of 1799. These wars were fought over the last decades of the 18th century, between the Kingdom of Mysore and the British East India Company (represented chiefly by the Madras Presidency) On the other hand they were challenged by Maratha Confederacy and the Nizam of Hyderabad. Hyder Ali and his successor, Tipu Sultan fought a war on four fronts, with the British attacking from the west, south and east This fourth war resulted in the overthrow of the house of Hyder Ali and Tipu and the dismantlement of Mysore to the benefit of the East India Company, which then won and took control of much of India. This would culminate in the beginning of the British Raj. The regiment also fought in the Mediterranean and Peninsula Campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars from 1806 to 1812. Over the years, especially by the time of the Peninsular campaigns, it was too difficult to obtain replacements from Switzerland. This led to the regiment recruiting Spanish and Portuguese recruits. (Sir Francis Drake would have turned in his grave at the Brits resorting to the longtime nemeses of the British).

Bay Company (HBC) and the North West Company (NWC). It ended in 1821, when the NWC merged with HBC.

So what an intriguing history this Regiment de Meuron had. In the first place it had been a chosen favourite of the VOC; but the complication of the end of the Dutch republic, taken over by the French empire, had resulted in a quick change of loyalties from Dutch to British, in order to survive. We may argue that the French equation had always tested loyalties, but in such a situation, I doubt it would have mattered much, even if the regiment had been made up entirely of Dutch. The last two governors of Ceylon had created this situation; firstly van der Graaf by his foolish arrogance and secondly van Angelbeek by his dithering timidity. In a case of survival, the mercurial regiment would always leave the dying Dutch East India Company for the security of the British East India Company and the coming Empire on which the sun never set. The Rue des Meurons in the Winnipeg suburb of Saint Boniface is named after this amazing regiment.

It is about a month since I heard from your quarter…… Aunt Maria wrote me a nice letter about harvesting in Whitby.”

Last Tuesday was a Sunday in honour of the queen of Belgium.”)

Under the pear tree

Continuation page 9 memoirs by Marja Rogers Bathurst. A large hall with tables and chairs, clean and no flies. I adopted a camp dog called Inky. He was black and slept under my bed at night. He used to go for a swim each day and swam right out to the end of the pier. We never saw a shark. Then one day I was told that Inky had ringworm. I ran to the camp doctor, a Russian woman, and begged her for medicine for the dog. She smiled and said she couldn’t do that. Two Italians probably the camp’s maintenance men came to collect him with a piece of rope. They told me to stay inside. Not much later we heard a shot. The Italians showed me where Inky was buried. They had put a white cross on his grave. We could also walk to the ocean. The first time I sat foot on that vast beach probably low tide it was strewn with bluebottles. I ran, danced and stamped on them until I collapsed. My legs were paralysed. Someone carried me to a truck which took me back to the camp. The paralysis lasted one day. My father joined us in the weekend. He was staying in

Newtown in a boarding house with some other Dutch men. I don’t know if he worked. I do know that he went to Wollongong to look for work. He never applied. He said he took one look at factories and smoke chimneys and turned around and went back to Sydney. By word of mouth we heard that there were houses to rent in Collaroy. Many Dutch people moved to the Northern beaches. We rented a house for a short time. Selma started kindy class at Narrabeen public and I went to Cremorne Girls High in Neutral Bay. When I was asked what my religion was I answered that I did not have one. That’s impossible I was told and I was written in as C of E. I was to start in class 2D because I couldn’t speak English. My first class was a sewing class with a neurotic teacher who slapped a girl hard in the face. I was so shocked and never forgot the girl’s name. Heather Price. Before we left Holland my mother had bought Selma and me a ‘Loden’ coat each. A wellknown European brand. Mine was a sort of green.

I wore that as I did not have a uniform yet. Surrounded by girls who wanted to know where my clogs and Dutch hat were and why was I wearing an army coat? I never wore that coat again. I enjoyed school. My father was out of work two years later and I had to leave. ‘Only temporary,’ my father said. He found me a job as a junior in an office of Marco Productions, a menswear manufacturer in St.Leonards. I didn’t go back to school. A few years later I enrolled into Julian Ashton art school in the Rocks where I drew two nights a week until I married. After our first rental in Collaroy someone told my father a tent was for sale in the Narrabeen caravan park. It would be much cheaper to live. After a few weeks of camping my mother had had enough. In the meantime I had made friends with a girl called Sylvia Mcgrigor who told us that a flat next door to her had become available. This flat was on the left side of an old house. The middle was occupied by the local hairdresser Mrs Davies and her two daughters who later bought the house from

the landlord. There was another flat on the other side where later my uncle and his family moved. My parents lived there until about 1969 when they bought a house in Iris street, French’s Forest. Mrs Mcgrigor always seemed to be cooking. She was kind to my mother who has never forgotten when we had first moved into the flat Mrs McGrigor called in with a tray, a teapot, two cups and cake. To my eyes the McGrigor house was chaotic. Sylvia’s young brothers seemed to be constantly fighting. Dogs and cats wandered in and out. Sylvia’s father grew all his own vege-

tables and strawberries. Mrs McGrigor when she wasn’t cooking, taught the piano. Mrs McGrigor had a habit of squashing flies with her egg lifter while she was cooking. Several sticky fly strips hung coiled from the ceiling and were covered with dead flies. My father on the other hand used a spray-can with DDT. One fly and my father would spray enough to kill a swarm. He loved it. The spray can had a metal container with the capacity of two large cups and a long handle with a pull and push motion. You filled up the container with deadly liquid, pumped and killed. The flat was in Collaroy on Pittwater Road, almost opposite the Long Reef golf links. We had four small rooms in a row. The first room was mine and looked over the back garden then came a large kitchen with a round table in the middle. This joined a small hallway where we later had a shower installed.

THE FORMER DUTCH EAST INDIES - THE END OF AN ERA

Part 4 by Jules burgemeestre Dutch POWs in Thailand were re-armed and formed into Dutch battalions, most of them ex- KNIL (Koninklijk Nederlands Indisch LegerRoyal Dutch Indies Army) personnel. The first battalion was named Andjing NICA (Dogs of the Netherlands East Indies Central Administration) in response to Indonesians who had coined this phrase and a bit later the second was named Gadjah Merah (Red Elephants). The rest of the POW’ s were in too bad a condition to be accepted. The battalions did not travel too far because the situation in the Malayan peninsula was as chaotic as in the Dutch East Indies. There it was the influence of the Communists. The battalions were used in this area first until the situa-

tion in the Indies became so bad that they were allowed to proceed there. By now the situation was completely out of hand in certain parts of the Indies, especially in the town of Bandung where we were released and living in my mother’s house. (She had managed to stay out of the camps). All around the town there was shooting and killing. A handful of Indian troops could not contain the situation. Here was a situation in which Muslim troops had to fight the Indonesians, fellow Muslims, to keep the Dutch alive. Then the English Command, once again established in Singapore, gave the command that most probably has saved hundreds of lives. They ordered the Japanese to arm again and restore order. The irony of it all. The government in the Netherlands meanwhile recruited volunteers to keep order in the Indies and several battalions were formed, first volunteers and afterwards conscripts, to be sent to the Indies. They took over from the Scots, Maharatas, Sikh and Gurkha troops. The last ones were among the most effective

troops during their stay. These troops had come from wherever they could be spared after the excesses in the Indies came to light. The Dutch troops had their hands full with pacifying the troubled areas and disarming the Japanese troops. The town of Bandung was divided into two parts by the railway. The southern part was in the hands of Indonesian freedom - fighters who were the men that had been conscripted under the Japanese occupation and later formed the core of the well- known Indonesian Siliwangi Division. The northern part was a mainly residential area with most of the military commands, council offices, schools and parks, while the southern part always had been the shopping and trade area. Order was restored in no time in the northern part, mainly by the Dutch troops who were then already in sufficient numbers to maintain law and order. This lasted, as far as I remember, till Indonesian Independence in 1949. Immediately after our release from the camp, my father and I returned to my mother’s home in the Multatuli Boulevard. Her www.dutchcourier.com

experience during the occupation had not been too good, either. She managed to stay out of the camps because she had convinced the Japanese that she had no immediate Dutch parentage. Till the day of today I do not know how she did it. Before the Japanese invasion we had lived at the southern edge of the town. Behind our house the rice fields started and this area, which was called Kareës, was made by the Japanese into a women’s camp, so my mother had to leave in a week with only her personal belongings. She managed to shift her valuable collection of Chinese antiques out of the house to her new place and managed to live by selling the antiques piece-meal. Unfortunately my father lived for only three month after his release. The doctor diagnosed that, despite my help with food, his health had deteriorated so much that it was a miracle that he had survived that long. He died of a couple of strokes. I assure you it was not a pretty experience. At least I had had the satisfaction of bringing him back alive to my mother, even if it was only for such a short time. After my release I joined an

emergency voluntary organisation called the RAPWI, the full name of which I cannot recall. It was an organisation that gradually managed to get the civil side of the town going until the proper authorities could take over. One of the last jobs I did here was to be attached to the war graves service. In this capacity I had to lead parties into areas where suspected killings had taken place in the Bersiap period and find graves and exhume the bodies. When possible, a reconstruction of the killings had to be prepared, witnesses traced, etc. As the killings were still recent, we usually got a clear idea of what had happened. Victims had been herded together and were then attacked with samurai swords and other weapons and more methods too horrible to describe. I had an Army weapon carrier at my disposal and the first time I used it to pick up my girlfriend (later my wife), she stepped into the car and froze and in no time she was out of the vehicle again. I looked at her and she said, ‘’You smell!” I did not understand what she Continued on page 21

Volledige paniek alom. We

DutchNews.nl Once the biggest social network in the Netherlands, Hyves has come back online after 13 years.

more than a fifth higher than in 2021, and inflation was 3.3% in August, driven by rising energy costs.

The “gezelligste platform” in the Netherlands has been relaunched by owners Mediahuis, which hopes to tap into nostalgia and distrust of American social media companies.

Powerbank with a bang

First launched by a group of Dutch friends in 2004 who wanted to share photos, Hyves hit its peak in 2010 with 10 million users, more than half of the country’s population. The same year it was acquired by Mediahuis Netherlands, which also owns the newspapers De Telegraaf and NRC Users soon began to abandon the site to a new social networking site, Facebook, and by 2013, the site was offline. The games section of the website lived on as Hyves Games. “Hyves wants to do things differently,” Mediahuis said in a statement. The group promises to keep users’ data within Europe and will not use algorithms to determine what content people see. The Rhine is carrying less water than at any point since 1947, leaving cargo barges unable to sail fully loaded, ferries and cruises cancelled, and watering restrictions for farmers. Everyone’s tax bill is falling, except the top 10%: CBS The share of income going on income tax has fallen for all income groups over the past ten years, except for the top 10% of earners, according to the national statistics office CBS. The top tier pays 24.9% of its income in tax, while the very lowest pays nothing. The typical household paid 12.3% of its gross income in income tax and national insurance contributions in 2024, down from 15.4% in 2011. The figures do not include VAT, which hits the poorest hardest, or pension and unemployment insurance premiums. Including all taxes and premiums, the typical household paid 32.3% in 2024, against 35.2% in 2011. The figures also don’t say anything about purchasing power. Consumer prices are

he power bank that ignited on a KLM flight en route to Curaçao, forcing the plane to return to Schiphol, belonged to the airline’s former CEO, according to NU.nl. Multiple sources tell news website that the electronic device belonged to Camiel Eurlings, who was charging contrary to safety rules while traveling in first class on the flight to Willemstad. Witnesses said that Eurlings was asleep at the time and was awoken by a bang when the power bank exploded. KLM would not confirm the reporting, citing privacy concerns.

Dutch primary schools are now expected to make room for the languages pupils speak at home, like Turkish, Polish and Arabic. New national curriculum standards

will encourage teachers to allow students to use their mother tongue to prepare for class or better understand material if it helps them. The change comes from updated core objectives (kerndoelen) for the Dutch language, which became law in August and set out what children are meant to learn. Current affairs programme Nieuwsuur reported on the new rules on Friday.

Flight KL735 was five and a half hours into its trip when the electronic device started emitting smoke. A photo obtained by RTL shows shattered window screen and burn debris.

About a quarter of people aged 15 and over mainly speak something other than standard Dutch at home – a dialect, a regional language such as Frisian or Limburgish, or another language such as English, Turkish or Polish, according to the national statistics office CBS.

More than 6,000 doctors and nurses from outside the EU came to the Netherlands in the past eight years, but only about 38% of doctors and 20% of nurses obtained the papers they need to work here, according to CIBG figures obtained by Trouw. Just over a third of dentists succeeded.

What the schools actually do with the new standards is largely up to them. Attention to multilingualism and pupils’ linguistic identity is obligatory, but the more concrete idea – letting children talk through difficult material in their home language, or prepare for a lesson in it – is advice rather than a strict requirement.

Candidates must first pass a Dutch language test at academic level before they can apply for the competence test, and most then work under supervision for several months before they can register. “The route for international doctors is tough and takes a long time,” Paul Herfs of the association for foreign-trained doctors VBGA told Trouw. While waiting, he said, they cannot work as doctors, their Dutch language skills deteriorate and they can struggle with their mental health. The number of non-EU dentists working in the Netherlands has doubled in five years, and the cabinet said in June it wants to steer refugees with medical qualifications into care jobs faster.

Not everyone agrees Language expert Joanneke Prenger, who advises on primary education, said parents should “speak the language you know best” with their children, reversing years of guidance to use Dutch at home. Doing so, she told Nieuwsuur, gives pupils a richer base for learning Dutch and other languages. Thomas Hendriks, who teaches Dutch in an Amsterdam bridging class for pupils with a language gap, said the steady stream of new advice “comes across as a whim, a trend”, even as more young people leave school unable to read and write properly. In his classroom, he added, letting pupils switch languages also means losing track of what is being said.

www.dutchcourier.com

The debate comes amid years of concern about basic Dutch skills. The Netherlands was once seen as a strong performer in reading, but scores have fallen sharply, and a national programme worth hundreds of millions of euros has yet to turn things around.

level.

A tougher line elsewhere The classroom shift runs alongside a harder line on Dutch in other areas. Ministers want to raise the language level required for naturalisation to B1, and are drawing up stricter rules for welfare claimants who do not speak adequate Dutch.

New Dutch national football coach Xavi Hernandez declared himself satisfied with his team’s performance following the 1-1 draw with Germany in Amsterdam.

For international families, the change means a child’s English, Turkish or Polish is now something schools are meant to work with rather than discourage. Regional languages count too – Friesland already requires schools to actively teach Frisian. Schools have until 2031 to fold all the new objectives into their teaching, and for now decide for themselves how to handle home languages. Water companies have called for PFAS chemicals to be banned in pesticides after a study showed that one-third of people are exposed to high levels of the “forever chemicals” in drinking water. An analysis by Greenpeace of every postcode in the Netherlands showed that the water in 32% of areas contains PFAS levels that are at least 1.5 times the recommended safe

PFAS is a collective label for thousands of highly stable chemical compounds that are used extensively in packaging, liquid chemicals and products such as waterproof clothing and non-stick cooking pans.

Cody Gakpo converted a magnificent skewered pass by debutant Ruben van Bommel with a crashing volley in stoppage time to earn Oranje the point their second-half dominance deserved. “We were a little nervous in the first half, but the second half is the way we want to play,” the Spaniard said after the opening game in the Nations League, his first match since being appointed last month. Germany took the lead in the 32nd minute when Felix Nmecha pounced on a loose ball in the penalty, but the Dutch were aggrieved that their opponents had played on after Brian Brobbey went down injured in the centre circle. Captain Virgil van Dijk said: “We thought the ball should have gone out, but it didn’t go out, and it was unfortunate that it fell right in front of them after a good block by Jan Paul van Hecke.”

SNBN news

De jonge tandarts “did a good job” en gaf hem zelfs een kleine korting. Een gruwelijk mooi boek. was on about and then it became clear. My work had made roe completely impervious to the smell of cadavers which, of course, lingered in the vehicle. I certainly did not make a good impression on my future mother-in-law. I had to go back to school to finish my HBS (Secondary education) which I passed within a year with a special programme) FOOLS’ PARADISE BEFORE INDONESIAN INDEPENDENCE As happened with all the colonial powers before World War 2, the Netherlands wanted to bring her own sovereignty back to the Indies. With this in mind she was sending in volunteer and conscript battalions to restore law and order. In the meantime the Indonesian independence movement de-

veloped throughout the archipelago, not as one movement, but as separate streams on the big and smaller islands such as Timor and Ambon. In Java the movements were especially strong in the middle of Java and Djokjakarta and Soerakarta, which were the original power centres before the Dutch settled in these islands. Another centre of the independence movement was in the highlands of Western Java, south and south-west of the town of Bandung. The explanation for all these centres were the different races living in these areas. The Javanese always managed to get to the top of these political struggles which was a point in favour of the Dutch and slowly the safe areas expanded. Many of the tea estates were destroyed by the initial freedom fighters, because they were foreign properties. By

pacifying these areas, the people could go back to work, earn money and export was again possible. Communication links between the big cities, roads as well as civilian telephone and radio, were opened again. These centres were also used for the concentration of the Dutch military strength. This did not mean that all the areas on the island were safe, only the cities and their direct surroundings. Outside Java only the more important places such as Makassar and Medan (old names) were pacified. Jules Burgemeestre story

International students in the Netherlands DUTCH NEWS.NL

International students in the Netherlands more than pay for themselves over their lifetimes, and capping their number would do little to ease the housing shortage, according to new research by the government’s economic policy analysis bureau CPB. The money the government spends on them – student grants, healthcare, social security – is on average more than recouped, the CPB said, mainly because a growing share stay after graduating and pay tax. More international students do add to housing pressure in the short term, the bureau found. But over time the effect

is limited, because the market adjusts – and how far it does depends on housing policy, not student numbers. A university graduate from outside the European Economic Area contributes about €243,000 over their lifetime, the CPB calculates, and one from an EEA country €82,500. For graduates of universities of applied sciences, the figures are €117,000 and €13,300. Staying on Around 17% of students in the Netherlands last year came from abroad, most from the EEA – the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Like Dutch students, they pay only the statutory tuition fee,

€2,694 this year, and can apply for student finance under certain conditions. Students from outside the EEA have no right to student finance and pay the full cost of their courses, so cost the government little. They are also staying on in greater numbers. Five years after leaving higher education, about one in five EEA graduates and two in five from outside the bloc are still in the Netherlands – roughly a quarter more than a decade ago.

Nog even over plantennamen.

Ben Overmaat

SPORT September 2026 ‘De Topper’ - Ajax v PSV The biggest football news in September wasn’t just the clash between Ajax and PSV, but PSV’s Ruben van Bommel’s reckless tackle on Aaron Bouwman. It was a horrible challenge that put Bouwman in hospital. He was forced to remain in hospital the following day due to his extensive injuries, which included a bruised lung and sternum. New Ajax coach Alex Sanchez’s side fell behind early but equalised through Tolu. The PSV goal was a planned move. After winning the ball in their left defensive midfield, they sent a long ball to the right wing. After advancing a few metres and letting his team run into attacking positions, they spread the ball diagonally to two PSV players waiting at the corner of the six-yard box. Van Bommel headed the ball not toward the goal, but to an unmarked PSV player, Ricardo Pepi, who scored from two metres out. Although Ajax had numerous good goal-scoring chances, they failed to convert. In contrast, PSV had four good chances and scored three. Perhaps the turning point came after a good break by new signing Brandt. With only the goalkeeper to beat, the keeper blocked the shot, but it fell fortuitously to Berghuis for what looked like a relatively easy finish. Realising the enormity of the missed chance, Berghuis buried his head into the pitch. He sprayed his low shot wide, thus keeping the scoreline at 1-1. Five minutes later, Klaassen was no better, as his shot sailed over the bar from about ten metres. PSV scored its second after Ajax failed to clear a corner. Perhaps the ball fell luckily to Geertuida, who swung his

right leg around the ball to lob a looping shot into the top right corner. It was a difficult shot, executed perfectly. In the 60th minute, Sanchez brought on four substitutes, including Dolberg. It almost paid off immediately, with Ajax stealing the ball in PSV’s half. They quickly played it to a runner into the box, but it sailed over the bar again. In the 78th minute, the match was turned on its head with the most controversial tackle in Dutch football in recent memory. The ball popped up and bounced between two advancing players: Aaron Bouwman and Reuben van Bommel. Bouwman was completely focused on the ball and was unaware of the fast-approaching van Bommel. While a melee ensued, with players from both teams pushing and shoving one another, the Ajax keeper and another player soon realised Bouwman needed urgent medical treatment. As other players realised the full extent of the emergency, they settled down to allow the medical staff to assist. Once Bouwman was off the field, fiery scenes emerged from the sidelines, with Klaasen heavily involved. PSV scored their third goal in the last minute after a player drew a defender away, allowing the ball to be passed into the gap for Bajraktarevic to score with a low shot into the corner. However, the fallout over Van Bommel’s tackle overshadowed the scoreline. “Van Bommel sat ‘distressed in the dressing room’; Bouwman had to go to hospital distressed,” wrote football journalist Spaan in Het Parool. “How a footballer managed to reduce the memory of an excellent match to ashes, to scatter them across the pitch at the ArenA.” Spaan compared Ruben to his father, Mark van Bommel,

whom he described as “a cynic who first looked around him before planting the elbow.” He also fiercely criticised PSV coach Peter Bosz: “Bosz was once again playing the village pastor with his soothing analysis: ‘He wanted to protect himself.’ Oh, do get lost, coach. The fuses blew as a result of a short circuit in his head.” What Van Bommel said: “I feel that ultimately it is my own fault. It wasn’t smart, a bit reckless. I have apologised, so I would like to conclude with that.” What Ajax said regarding Aaron Bouwman: Aaron Bouwman will not be in action again during the month of September. The Ajax defender was admitted to hospital overnight after the match against PSV. Examinations showed that Bouwman suffered several injuries, including bruising to his sternum and a bruised lung. He remains in hospital on Sunday for observation. He is expected to be allowed home later on Sunday evening.” In the next few days, even more extreme headlines appeared, including one that accused Van Bommel of attempted murder! To be fair to Van Bommel, this is the first bad foul that I had ever seen him commit. I think he saw that he would be contesting the ball at the same time as Bouwman, and he braced himself for the impact. It turned out to be an extremely reckless challenge worthy of a red card. In total, PSV received 6 yellow cards to Ajax’s 3 and 13 fouls to Ajax’s 6. At the time, I wonde-

Netherlands v Germany Ajax Stadium Fast forward to the Netherlands’ first UEFA Nations League game, and suddenly Ruben Van Bommel is a hero! It was the first game for both coaches: Xavi Hernández and Jürgen Klopp. Very early in the game, Van Dijk glanced the ball into the net from a corner by Tijani Reijnders. However, VAR intervened and disallowed the goal, adjudging that Brobbey had impeded the keeper, MarcAndre ter Stegen. The contact was minimal. The goal should have stood. Some of the challenges became heated, especially one by Quinten Timber, whose studs found the knee of Kai Havertz. He was lucky to receive only a yellow. Shortly afterwards, the Arsenal forward limped off with a torn hamstring. In the 33rd minute, Brobbey, Sunderland’s hat-trick hero, lay injured on the pitch. The Dutch stopped playing and appealed to the referee and the Germans to allow treatment for Brobbey. Instead, Germany swept the ball to the other side of the pitch to Karem Adeyami. Nmecha finished his low cross from close range. The Dutch protested but to no avail. Brobbey was substituted with what looked like a hamstring injury. Just before he went off, Adeyami missed a glorious chance to make it two nil but fired over the bar. After the game, Virgil Van Dijk stated that it was a “disgrace”

by Henry van Zanden

that Germany’s goal was allowed to stand. Mexx Meerdink, who came on for Brobbey, had one goal ruled out and just missed with the goal wide open as he stretched for the cross. Another Meerdink effort struck firmly toward the left post and the German keeper palmed it onto the post. The play had to be held up briefly as an overzealous fan rushed onto the pitch to take a selfie with Reijnders. The game exploded into more scuffles after Amiri made a bad challenge on Denzel Dumfries. Although he could continue, Dumfries was still seething and clashed with German captain Joshua Kimmich. In the second half, the Dutch increased the intensity, peppering the German goal with nine shots on target and forcing Marc-Andre ter Stegen to make eight saves. Germany appeared destined to escape with a narrow victory. Then came the moment that saved the Dutch. Substitute Ruben van Bommel delivered a perfect cross from the left to the surging Cody Gakpo, who scored with a difficult volley in the second minute of stoppage time. Xavi outmanoeuvred Klopp in ball possession and shots on goal: 22 to 11. He would have been unhappy with Van Hecke’s form, Brobbey’s injury, and chances squandered by Gakpo, Summerville and Meerdink. Xavi would have been pleased with his substitutes and Gakpo’s persistent threat from the left, with multiple shots on goal and finding the clinical touch needed to score in the 92nd minute.
