How your generosity made life better for children and adults with disabilities and for Veterans and seniors in urgent need across Oregon in 2024.
About Easterseals Oregon
y g
Where children with disabilities have access to life-changing summer camp programs that give them opportunities to feel 100% loved and included in our society and in the joy of being outdoors, trying new things, and making life-long friends and memories.
Where no one who has served our country ever has to face a housing crisis or job insecurity alone or without the support and solutions that they (and their families) need to survive and thrive.
Where people of color with disabilities receive the culturally specific support and training they need to secure work, feel 100% included in our society, and thrive.
Where seniors who need help re-entering the workforce to make ends meet and to survive have access to job training opportunities that yield long-term employment, economic security, peace of mind, fulfillment, and happiness.
Thank you for sharing in our vision. Together, we can make a world of difference.

You are part of this story
From the book “Making a Difference with Easterseals” by Beth Finke
In 1907 a boy named Homer had just graduated from high school He was riding a streetcar in his hometown of Elyria, Ohio His streetcar crashed, and Homer and eight other people were badly injured He lost his legs Elyria was a small town and did not have a hospital Homer could not get help
Homer’s father, Edgar Allen, was devastated. Elyria needed better hospitals. Injured and disabled children needed better care Edgar Allen did not want other children and families to suffer He asked people to donate and was able to raise a lot of money
Edgar Allen opened a hospital for disabled children And that was just the beginning
He created a national organization to support disabled children In the spring of 1934, they started selling stickers to raise money Each sticker cost one penny Donors stuck them on envelopes to show support for the cause. The stickers (or postage “seals”) became popular all over the United States, especially around Easter time. That is why they named the national organization Easterseals.
Easterseals centers opened across the country These centers didn’t just help children People of all ages came to Easterseals centers
Before Edgar Allen started Easterseals, the world was not very accessible to people with disabilities Street corners did not have curb cuts for wheelchairs Blind children weren’t taught Braille in school In fact, children with disabilities were not allowed to go to school at all
In an inaccessible world, children and adults with disabilities often stayed home People had no idea how many millions of Americans had disabilities They didn’t know about all the things people with disabilities are able and want to do
Easterseals has spent over 100 years working to help people with disabilities and their families live full and independent lives
Easterseals Oregon was founded in 1947 by Douglas MacKay, the former Governor of Oregon The organization's founding purpose: "To improve opportunities for children and adults with disabilities, regardless of race, color, or creed, so they can take their place in everyday society "
This purpose continues in our mission today: “To unlock opportunities to empower children and adults with disabilities, Veterans, and other underserved populations."

Evidence that your generosity brings joy to children and families impacted by disability
My son (who had Down syndrome) grew up attending Easterseals Oregon’s Summer Camps every year. They were a lifeline for him Something joyful to look forward to each year, and to think about during the year when he felt sad being alone. We took him to Disneyland one year, but he said, “I’d rather be at the Easterseals Oregon Camp.” Before he passed away in his early 20s, he asked if he could be buried at the Camp, his favorite place on Earth It meant the world to him, and still does to us when we think about him and what made him truly happy in life
I have been bullied for a long time by kids who don’t know how to be nice to someone who has a disability I have felt alone for a long time Being able to go to the Easterseals summer camp this year was the best week of my life. I made friends. I was so happy I finally felt welcome and understood Thank you so much, Halleya
Thank you to those who give to make Easterseals Oregon’s summer camp possible for children with disabilities. It’s the one place where kids with disabilities can be themselves where they don’t have to try so hard to fit into a world that doesn’t understand them.
I learned that I don’t have to b e alone and bored all the time I made some real friends I tried a
And then there’s this . . .
You may not believe this story. But we have the photos to prove it, thanks to his mom. Hopefully, by reading his story, you’ll get an even deeper understanding of how much summer camp means to children with disabilities.
After attending Easterseals Oregon’s Summer Camp in 2023, twelve-year-old Michael Conley decided he wanted to help other kids like him get to experience it He told his mom, “I’ll do whatever it takes More kids need to be part of this What can I do to help more kids like me?”
He and his mom, Lori, called us and asked what they could do to help Within a nano-second of learning about BLOOMFEST our annual fundraiser centered upon the sale of tulip bouquets to raise funds for our camp and other programs, they both shouted, “We‘re in!”
We thought, ok, they’ll volunteer at one of our BLOOMFEST pop-up sales for an hour or so, and then call it a day Boy, were we wrong!
Lori and Michael asked if they could set up and host their own BLOOMFEST sale in front of their home
They spent weeks telling their friends, family, neighbors, and others to come to Michael’s BLOOMFEST sale on the first Monday of BLOOMFEST to purchase bouquets to help more children with disabilities get the opportunity to attend Easterseals Oregon’s Summer Camp. They raised over $1,500 dollars in one day, and believe it or not, donations are still coming in seven months later.
But wait, there’s more The same week of BLOOMFEST, they got up at 3 am to get to KGW8 News in Downtown Portland so that Michael could tell his story three times during the three-hour morning news show The same week of BLOOMFEST, Michael and his mom volunteered to make deliveries of tulip bouquet pre-orders, all over town Our deepest gratitude to Michael and his mom, and to all who make a difference in the lives of others through their thoughtfu erosity

Thank you for helping make life a lot better for Latinos and other minorities living with disabilities
Julia was born with developmental delays She has a hard time with speech and language and can’t read She is also an English Language Learner As she was getting older, the future seemed very dark to her “Who will hire someone who can’t read and learn?”
Thankfully, for over 20 years, Easterseals Oregon has offered a program specifically designed to help people with disabilities who also have language or literacy barriers secure employment It’s called Connecting Communities
Julia’s family brought her to Easterseals Oregon’s Connecting Communities Program where she found an accommodation for her disability At first, she didn’t feel confident that she could learn and struggled with English and reading classes and job readiness workshops
However, with the ability to work at her own pace, persistence, lots of support, and words of encouragement, she began to show progress in her reading.
It took two years, but she finished reading a book for the first time in her life After reaching this milestone, Julia worked with our staff to set “life goals ” She learned computer skills She started meeting with one of our job developers. Our staff helped her create a resume and a cover letter and taught her how to submit job applications online They spent hours coaching and doing mock interviews with her
Within a short time, Julia received a call from a

Thank you for helping adults with disabilities who are living under severe economic stress
I am 55 I have not been able to make ends meet for years I ended up living in my car I had no relatives or friends I thought about ending my life, but somehow, I found Easterseals Oregon This organization gave me the training and confidence I needed to return to the workforce and earn a living I am thriving now because of the help I received and because of the people who give to make Easterseals Oregon possible. I am still here. I am thriving because of you. You changed my life. You saved my life. Thank you.
Susan
I have a disability I was feeling depressed and scared about my economic situation and future I kept trying to secure work on my own, but I experienced discrimination due to my disability and needed help addressing it and overcoming it. Please keep this program going. It’s a life changer.
Linda
I am 55. I recently had a major car accident that took me out of work for several months. I could not pay my bills or rent. I was close to losing everything and to becoming homeless I went to many organizations and churches for help, but to no avail
Out of the blue, I was sitting in my car bawling, feeling completely defeated and hopeless, when I received a call from a caseworker at Easterseals
Oregon She was compassionate and empathetic She said not to worry She was right
Easterseals Oregon helped me get back to work. I was then able to pay my bills and debt that I had accrued while I wasn’t able to work. I didn’t lose my apartment. They helped lift me back up to being selfsufficient and successful as a selfsupporting single woman I even have savings now for emergency situations
Easterseals Oregon and the people who support it literally save lives.
I am forever grateful.
Judy
.
Thank you for helping Veterans in crisis
I served in the US Air Force for 4 years After coming home, I experienced a series of major setbacks I lost everything My family, my home, my work, my savings I ended up homeless at the Portland Rescue Mission I was overwhelmed by the deep hole I was in, but at the same time, determined to get out of it.
Someone told me about Easterseals Oregon’s programs that help veterans who are homeless. It was exactly what I needed — an organization that didn’t judge me or throw up more obstacles but that 100% believed that I could be successful and that I had a right to a second chance in life a second chance to give back to our society and to live again with dignity. And they did.
From day one, Easterseals Oregon helped me get a solid plan together for getting out of the hole I was in, including addressing all of the hurdles that were holding me back, like not having a birth certificate or the document to show that I had been honorably discharged from the Air Force, which I was.
It worked. Within a month, I secured a job I love. I’m on the way now – not only to becoming selfsufficient – but to living the life of my dreams
I know that there are a lot of people like me out there because I have met them: veterans who lost their footing after service and, for whatever reason, ended up at rock bottom with no home or a job, and completely alone. Alone but eager to work, determined to contribute to society, and capable of success for sure.
Please don’t give up on veterans who are homeless or assume that they are all outside the realm of hope or help We’re not Michael
I served in the US Air Force for 10 years I was deployed to Qatar twice When I got home from the deployment, I was exhausted. I was diagnosed with PTSD. My marriage ended. I became a single mom of two children, one with a disability. Then came the pandemic. My mental health crashed and we ended up unhoused. I went to the VA H it l i P tl d Th f d t Within a month, I moved into my own apartment, funded through Easterseals and its donors. They even provided a bed for me to sleep on and a welcome home kit with dishes, sheets, towels, food, and other essential things
Now that I had a safe place to sleep and call home, I could focus effectively on finding a job Easterseals helped me create a step-by-step plan for securing employment
David, a former Green Beret, is one of the 258 Veterans you helped us house this year.
Here he is, holding the keys to his new apartment on day one of his new start in life and era of finally living in peace.
You helped unlock opportunities for You helped prevent 354 Veterans (and their families) from becoming homeless.
42 Seniors with disabilities who were also unhoused move into apartments.
233 Adults with disabilities to secure employment that is helping them improve their economic situation and feel more empowered in life a total of 1,973 individuals impacted by disability, including Veterans and Seniors.
258 Veterans experiencing homelessness (and their families) to move into permanent housing
462 Seniors to gain the skills and confidence to re-enter the workforce and live without the stress of food and housing insecurity.
60 Children with disabilities to attend our barrier-free, adaptive summer camp program and have the time of their lives.
89% of our $16,276,900 budget went directly to supporting our programs
With love and gratitude to those who give to help make live so much better for so many
