Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery that occurs across the globe. Michigan currently ranks 10 in number of cases in the U.S. The number of cases is rapidly growing due to shared borders with tribal nations, Canada, other states, and waterways. Additionally, large cities offer a breeding ground for human trafficking, especially sex trafficking. Most minors involved in these cases, are youth who have run away from home or are in foster care.
Easterseals MORC’s Oakland home-based juvenile justice team is hosting a group for girls, ages 12-18 years old to help them know the signs of human trafficking, develop skills and to navigate high-risk situations, and stay safe.
What can participants expect?
Understand the definitions and signs of human and sex trafficking, including grooming and exploitation
Increased self-esteem and coping skills to help navigate high-risk situations
Learn safety strategies for social media and real-life interactions Practice assertive communication through role-play exercises. Engage in reflective journaling and expressive activities to process experiences and emotions.
When does the Girls Prevention and Safety Strategies group take
place?
The Girls Prevention and Safety Strategies group will meet for 8 weeks on Thursdays, starting July 31 from 4:30 - 6:00 PM. The group will take place at the Easterseals MORC Southfield Crescent Centre location (24445 Northwestern Hwy. Suite 100, Southfield, MI), with periodic virtual meetings.
