Easter Seals Michigan offers comprehensive services that help individuals of all ages with disabilities, and their families, to successfully live, learn, work and play in their communities.

Brent Wirth President/CEO Easter Seals Michigan has been privileged to serve children and adults with disabilities or special needs and their families for nearly 100 years. It is our mission to serve and support them so they can successfully live, learn, work and play in their communities.

We would not be able to carry out our mission without the assistance of our amazing volunteers, donors, staff, community, and corporate partners. Easter Seals Michigan exists because of people like you, supporting others to live extraordinary lives, and we thank you.

2014 was a successful year for Easter Seals Michigan! With community support, and investments from our donors, government funders and grantors, you all made it possible for us to serve 9,519 people, a 5% increase from the prior year.

During the year we enhanced our array of offerings for children living with autism, including the addition of home-based Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) services.

Another notable new initiative is the NAVIGATE program, which will allow us to become engaged earlier in treatment for individuals experiencing schizophrenia. We were also excited to open our tenth service location in Walled Lake!

We continue to evolve and adapt to meet today’s needs and plan for tomorrow.

However, we cannot do this alone. We continue to strengthen our relationships with partners like The Michigan State University Extension, which has allowed us to enhance our services to farmers here in Michigan. Through a new partnership with Network180, we have expanded our behavioral health services on the west side of the state. We also strengthened our partnership with primary care providers, including those with OIHN and MyCare to enhance our behavioral health care services into an integrated health system.

We have some amazing things planned for the coming year, including building our brand new concessions stand at our Miracle League of Michigan field in Southfield.

Through a new partnership, and a generous grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, we are implementing a program which will allow us to provide early intervention and assessments to children and youth who have experienced trauma in their lives. We are pleased to be able to offer the Luna model to the citizens of Michigan and are eager to share the outcomes with you.

Integrated Care

INTEGRATED CARE On average, individuals with behavioral health disabilities live shorter lives.

RECURRENT DEPRESSION 7-11 years less than the standard life expectancy

BIPOLAR DISORDER 9-20 years less than the standard life expectancy

SCHIZOPHRENIA 10-20 years less than the standard life expectancy

DRUG & ALCOHOL USE 9-24 years less than the standard life expectancy

People with behavioral and substance use disorders may die decades earlier than the average person as a result of high risk behaviors, poor health habits, and untreated or preventable chronic illnesses.

In addition to behavioral health services, Easter Seals Michigan is developing relationships with primary care and specialty providers in order to better serve our people. We currently have an onsite pharmacy, dental care and primary care physicians in various locations. We also have 69 different support groups that focus on topics such as diabetes awareness, smoking cessation, weight management, and more.

As we continue to expand these partnerships, our goal is to use a holistic approach to improve outcomes and quality of life for the individuals we serve.

In 2014, Easter Seals Michigan staff logged 338,954 miles providing communitybased services.

That’s the equivalent to driving around the earth 13.6 times!

Program Details

HELPING PEOPLE LIVE, LEARN, WORK & PLAY AgrAbility helps Michigan farmers with disabilities through illness or injury to continue to farm by providing adaptive equipment. In 2014, 78 farmers received services, allowing them to continue working on their farms.

We have partnered with the Michigan State University Extension and received a grant from the US Department of Agriculture. This grant will allow us to continue to enhance these services.

AUTISM SERVICES 1 in 68 children are now diagnosed with autism. We offer speech & language therapy, occupational therapy, sensory integration and The P.L.A.Y. Project.

In 2014, we enhanced our autism services to include Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA).

The Miracle League of Michigan provides children and adults with disabilities or special needs the opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league on an adaptive field.

Ambassadors

PUNKY

Easter Seals Michigan Child Ambassador

Punky was born with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, and is one of the hundreds of players who participate in the Miracle League of Michigan program through Easter Seals Michigan.

The Miracle League provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball, as well as bowling, in competitive and noncompetitive leagues. The league promotes teamwork, encourages socialization, and provides great exercise, which helps to improve motor skills of participants. This program provides individuals like Punky the opportunity to participate in a team sport, and for her family to cheer on their all-star. Her family has noticed that playing in the Miracle League has given her a sense of understanding of what a team sport is, and what being on a team is all about; especially in relation to her peers, who talk about the sports they are playing in school.

“Participating in a team sport has brought the family closer as well,” says Michelle, Punky’s mom. “She enjoys watching baseball games with her dad, and the family no longer feels segregated by her physical impairment.”

In fact, this past season Punky accomplished a major goal by walking to first base for the first time!

MELVIN

Easter Seals Michigan Adult Ambassador

Melvin receives services out of our Pontiac location. His warm attitude and willingness to help others is contagious. Melvin was diagnosed with a mood disorder and has made huge strides in his personal development. He enjoys being a mentor to other people with mood disorders.

Melvin recently represented Easter Seals Michigan at an advocacy event in Washington DC and met with members of the Michigan delegation.

He stressed that affordable medication is key to finding the way back to being productive and living in family and community settings.

In addition to moving into his own apartment, he recently got a job working at a homeless shelter.

When asked what he likes about Easter Seals, Melvin said, “Easter Seals Michigan saw something in me that I didn’t. They believe in me.�
