There is so much to be proud of and grateful for from Easter Seals Michigan’s 2010/2011 fiscal year. Using our new strategic plan as the benchmark for excellence, we worked tirelessly to build communities where people are treated equally and are inspired to achieve their goals, dreams and aspirations.

The rewards of our efforts presented themselves in many ways, including the three Easter Seals Michigan nominees, Sherry G., Kayla S., and Joshaunna B., who were recognized by the Oakland County Community Health Authority during its annual achievement award presentation. The distinguished honors paid tribute to individuals receiving behavioral health services who took steps to reduce mental health stigma, help others, and made the community a better place to live and work. Their tremendous achievements exemplify the true spirit in which Easter Seals promotes self-advocacy and independence.

Nationally, Easter Seals Michigan was repeatedly acknowledged as an innovative leader in behavioral health services and human resource standards. We were named a National Best & Brightest Company To Work For, received a notable Community Achievement accolade in recognition of our staff’s community engagement activities; chosen as one of 21 behavioral health service organizations to serve on the inaugural class to develop Trauma-Informed Practices, and added Macomb to the list of counties we serve, including Genesee, Kent and Oakland.

Easter Seals Michigan Service Programs

Service

Easter Seals Michigan offers a wide range of holistic, integrated behavioral health and rehabilitative services to support the recovery and resiliency of children, adults, and families from birth and beyond.

Services are provided at a number of locations throughout Oakland, Macomb, Genesee and Kent Counties.

Adult Services Comprehensive, evidence-based, co-occurring behavioral health services including psychiatric evaluation, medication management, specialty and tradition therapy modalities, Assertive Community Treatment, Integrated Dual Diagnosis, vocational employment programs, residential and community based case management and support services for adults 18 years and beyond.

Collaborative Solutions, a division of Adult Services, provides outpatient and community based behavioral services to adults involved in the criminal justice system including pre and post book jail diversion services.

Collaborative Solution staff provide therapeutic, medication management and discharge planning services for inmates at Oakland County Jail.

Dreams Unlimited Clubhouse Psychosocial rehabilitation program that focuses on fostering recovery, competency, social supports and community participation for individuals, as well as developing employment skills and opportunities.

Centro Latino Comprehensive, evidence based, co-occurring behavioral health services including, psychiatric, therapeutic and community based case management for Spanish speaking children, adults and families.

Programs

Family Services Comprehensive, evidenced based, co-occurring behavioral health services including psychiatric evaluation, medication management, specialty and traditional therapy modalities, intensive home based services and community based case management with families and children from birth to 18 years of age.

Children’s Developmental Therapies and Services Professional evaluation and therapy for children with autism; speech and language delays; motor and social skill developmental issues; and sensory integration disorders.

Autism Services The P.L.A.Y. (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) Project is an intensive and cost-effective, early intervention for children from 18 months to eight years with autism spectrum disorders.

West Michigan Older Adult Services Out and About and Caring for Caregivers are two programs that promote independent living, home safety, fall prevention, healthy life styles and support groups for older adults and their caregivers in Kent County.

AgrAbility Services Michigan AgrAbility helps people with disabilities employed in agriculture continue to farm and live independently. AgrAbility promotes ways to manage disabling conditions, such as, arthritis, chronic back pain, motion loss, hearing loss and any other conditions to maintain agricultural production, independence

Easter Seals Michigan Ambassadors

Easter Seals Michigan’s Child Ambassador Lukas represents the one in 110 children born with autism, a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.

It’s defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum disorder” that affects individuals differently and in varying degrees.

When Lukas was three, after receiving occupational and speech therapy through community programs, it was recommended to his mother, Melissa, that he be examined by a specialist. In March of 2010, test results revealed that Lukas had mild autism with hyperlexic features – a fascination with printed words and letters. Lukas’ pediatrician immediately referred him to Easter Seals.

Soon after, Lukas began receiving services through Easter Seals’ Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters (P.L.A.Y.) Project, an intensive and cost-effective early intervention for children through age eight diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The successful in-home consultation model is designed to empower parents by teaching them techniques for play-based intervention which address the core autism deficits: self-isolation and impaired social skills, language delay and impaired communication, and stereotyped or repetitive behaviors.

Easter Seals Michigan’s Adult Ambassador Crystal was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was just a teenager, shortly after receiving counseling for a trauma-related incident. Her life-long struggle with this serious mental illness led Crystal to Easter Seals’ behavioral health services in 2010, where she began receiving the necessary support to successfully manage her symptoms.

More than 2.5 million Americans are living with bipolar disorder, a brain condition that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Bipolar disorder affects men and women equally and usually starts between the ages of 15 - 25.

Easter Seals Michigan offers adults several levels of care that provide differing frequency and intensity to suit each person’s needs.

Adult Services offers a comprehensive array of behavioral health services to support the recovery of individuals with a serious mental illness or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder.

To help individuals achieve their personal goals and live fuller, healthier and more productive lives, we use a variety of proven treatment methods called evidence-based practices. Services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team of licensed and/or registered behavioral health professionals, including psychiatrists, therapists, case managers and nurses.

• Easter Seals Michigan’s Adult Behavioral Health Services enrolled 1,360 new individuals.

• Therapists at ESM’s South location provided more than 45 hours of group therapy per week for more than 250 adult consumers for a total of 2,340 sessions.

• ESM was awarded a contract by Macomb County Community Mental Health to expand services into the Macomb communities.

• ESM has celebrated our one year anniversary of integrated primary and behavioral healthcare through our partnership with the Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority.

• ESM’s Adventure Therapy Program received a national Easter Seals Service Excellence Award.

• Easter Seals Michigan Director of Family Services, Susan Styf, was named the 2011 Partnership Award recipient by The Association for Children’s Mental Health (ACMH).

• Children’s Developmental Therapies and Services expanded its occupational therapy program.

• Family Services in Genesee County received one of the highest scores of all service providers in the Genesee County Department of Community Health bi-annual audit.

• Three Easter Seals Michigan consumer nominees were honored during the 2011 Oakland County Community Health Authority (CMH) Achievement Award presentation.

• More than 70,000 people were introduced to ESM’s services through outreach efforts.

• Easter Seals Michigan Dreams Unlimited Clubhouse commemorated 20 years of successful behavioral health rehabilitation programs for people with serious mental illness.

• ESM partnered with the community in Manistee to provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities through the “Explore the Shore” accessibility program.

• In addition to being recognized as a Michigan Best and Brightest Company To Work For in Detroit for the past 11 years and for seven years in West Michigan, ESM was also awarded the 2011 Elite Community Initiatives Award in recognition of our efforts to develop an employee culture that engages staff in community collaborations and partnerships.
