Leading the way to 100% equity, inclusion, and access for people with disabilities, families, and communities.
Fiscal year 2024 was another banner year for Easterseals MORC. We strengthened our continuum of care through our ongoing merger integration, launched some exciting new programs, and embarked on advocacy efforts to empower individuals with disabilities towards healthier, more independent lives. We served over 25,150 individuals and their families last year!
As the demand for our services continues to grow, we are evolving to meet the need with a variety of innovative program initiatives. We were approved to become a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC) in Macomb County, allowing us to expand access to critical behavioral health services to some of our most vulnerable populations. We expanded our Miracle League program to additional sports and activities, providing quality adaptive recreational and social opportunities for individuals with disabilities. We received a grant to lead a state-wide Task Force that will develop a blueprint for expanding technology support options for individuals with disabilities.
We also broke ground on a new Autism Comprehensive Care Center in Waterford. The new Center will be state-of-the-art and offer a one-stop shop of transformational services for individuals with autism and their families.
On behalf of everyone at Easterseals MORC, I want to thank our many partners, donors, volunteers and team members, whose support is vital to fulfilling our mission and making a life-changing impact for people with disabilities, their families, and our communities.
I look forward to the future as we continue our work together to create healthier communities throughout Michigan.
Brent L. Wirth President/CEO
Easterseals MORC broke ground on a new Autism Comprehensive Care Center on the Oakland County campus in Waterford alongside our board members, elected officials, community partners and families served.
The new Center will deliver a transformational model of care for those living with autism and their families in Southeast Michigan. Every aspect of the building design has been customized to best serve individuals with autism and their families. With a family-centered approach and holistic service array, the Center will serve as a one-stop shop, offering autism and behavioral health therapy, as well as comprehensive support programs for all members of the family.
We believe that the comprehensive services and innovative care model offered by the new Center will make a life-changing difference for the individuals with autism we serve and their families. Accessing these services could mean the difference in a child with autism starting school on time with their peers, fully participating in their community, or living independently as an adult.
Easterseals MORC is embarking on an ongoing $8.2 million capital campaign to fund the building. The new Center is expected to open by the end of 2025.
Easterseals MORC has developed an innovative partnership with Easterseals National and Cherry Lake Publishing to create and publish children’s books that educate kids about people with disabilities.
The first series to come from the partnership is called Understanding Disability, and features titles that help children better understand people with disabilities and promote inclusion. A second series, called My Itty Bitty Bio series, features biographies of different role models and historical figures in the disability community. All of the books were written by authors with a disability.
This past year, Easterseals became a feature organization in a new national book series with the publication of, Making a Difference with Easterseals: How Can I Help? This book, geared towards elementary aged children, highlights the life-changing work Easterseals and its affiliates conduct across the nation and highlights ways to get involved with the organization.
All of these books have become valuable tools for parents, grandparents, teachers and others to educate kids about disabilities, reduce stigma and raise awareness about the amazing talents of people with disabilities and the important contributions they have made throughout history. Through Easterseals MORC’s outreach, the books have been placed in over 100 local elementary schools and libraries.
Additionally, the books help our fundraising efforts with 10% of book sale proceeds being donated back to support Easterseals MORC programs and services.
At Easterseals MORC, we create programs based on listening to the needs of the families and communities we serve. One of the needs our families have consistently expressed is the difficulty in finding inclusive recreational activities where their children with special needs are welcomed, included, and accepted.
While our Miracle League baseball program has been tremendously successful in giving individuals with disabilities the opportunity to play an organized sport, our families have still expressed the need for more inclusive recreational activities year-round. We first expanded our programming by adding a bowling program, and over the past year, have further expanded our inclusive recreational offerings to additional sports and social activities.
Partnering with Lakeland Arena in Waterford, we started the Miracle on Ice adaptive hockey program. Initiated as a six-week pilot program, registration sold out in days. The program has become so successful, it will be continued and expanded next year. In addition to the hockey program, we’ve also rolled out monthly pizza and dance parties. These events offer an alternative to sports and provide a way for family and friends to come together for fun in a relaxed and supportive environment.
More recently, we began piloting a “Fun and Fitness” program with Redline Athletics. This program was inspired by families who have children whose disabilities and/or medications make it difficult to lose weight and stay fit.
Through these expanded social and recreational programs, Easterseals MORC is giving individuals with special needs and their families a Miracle League experience complete with joy, friendship, skill-building and community connectedness year-round.
1. Thome Memorial Foundation Grant – $50,000
This grant, in partnership with the Easterseals National Office, focuses on providing seniors (55+) with behavioral health, substance use, and outreach services. Calm subscriptions for seniors were provided as part of this grant.
2. Dicks Sporting Goods Foundation – $5,000
This grant, provided through the Rochester, MI store, helped provide baseball equipment, league supplies, umpires, and field maintenance for our Miracle League of Michigan Southfield program.
3. CareSource – $45,000
This grant helped us create an internal training curriculum via our experienced integrated services therapy leaders. Components of this training include: concepts of effective neurodivergent affirming therapy; best practice techniques for engaging and treating co-occurring behavioral needs for individuals with autism; and strategies for including their parents in therapy. Due to the tremendous success of this project, a second grant was awarded in late 2024.
