FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO For over 100 years we have been committed to the communities we are in and the people we serve. That commitment has allowed us to continue serving the community through two World Wars, the Polio epidemic, the Great Depression, and now, the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thanks to the support of multiple partners, organizations, donors, volunteers, and staff, we never closed our offices or interrupted our services. In fact, we sought out, and were also presented with, many opportunities that allowed us to enhance the services we currently offer and augment with new ways to empower people with disabilities, or special needs, so they can accomplish their goals and pursue their dreams.

It is clear to us that our services have never been more necessary. Year after year we continue to experience larger demand for services and this year has been no different. We saw an 8% growth in the number of people we serve, as well as an increase in phone calls, website traffic, and media inquiries. We continue to find ways to step up to meet the increasing need. Since becoming a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) we have significantly enhanced our ability to improve access to lifechanging and, sometimes, lifesaving, services.

We are thankful for all of you and your unrivaled dedication to the mission of Easterseals and to the children, adults, and families that we serve.

NO EVENT, EVENT & THE EPIC BIKE RIDE NO EVENT, EVENT

As we continued to cope with the impact of the pandemic, we decided to host a nonevent fundraiser throughout the month of March 2021. The No Event, Event supported people who were experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly called the “Winter Blues,” which have been amplified during this pandemic. We decided to forgo a virtual event as many people we surveyed were tired of living a “virtual life.” Instead, we partnered with AFCO and EOTECH, organizations that both embodied power, strength and resiliency, to create a coping box. Thanks to the help of our talented clinical team, every box was loaded with top-quality items known to help reduce stress and anxiety.

The boxes were available for purchase online and for every box that was purchased, a box was donated to a person served by Easterseals Michigan.

The campaign raised $70,976 for our services and over 400 coping boxes were distributed.

THE EPIC BIKE RIDE

Amway Independent Business Owner (IBO), Ganesh Shenoy was so moved by the services that Easterseals Michigan offered to the community that he decided to get involved and give back by riding a bike from New York City to Ada, Michigan to raise money. Ganesh took off from World Trade Center Park on July 30, 2021 and arrived in Ada, Michigan at the Amway World Headquarters shortly before noon on August 28, 2021. He chronicled his journey LIVE on social media. News of his feat travelled around the world and was heavily featured in numerous news stories in New York, Canada, and Michigan. Overall, his ride raised $76,433 for our services and inspired thousands of people to believe in themselves.

MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS

We have noticed a huge increase in the need for mental health services over the past several years.

According to NAMI, 1 in 5 people experience some form of mental illness but the average delay between the first symptoms and treatment is 11 years! Most of this is due to the stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment.

This staggering statistic is one of the reasons we launched the Mental Health Matters campaign.

Throughout the month of May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month, we heavily promoted the importance of mental health services by offering a free online mental health screening.

We secured 10 campaign sponsors and 66 campaign partners to help spread the word resulting in over 5,100 screenings. 75% of the people that took the screening had signs of a mental health disability and were referred to mental health services in their area.

The campaign was featured on Fox, NBC, and ABC and highlighted in numerous social media posts.

The success of the campaign was due to the support of our partners and sponsors that recognize the importance of busting stigma and connecting people to mental health services.

MISSION POSSIBLE! MISSION POSSIBLE! Members of our Board of Directors, Jason Slocum, Matt Van Haaren, Peter McElroy and Emil Kreycik, raised vital funds for our mission by taking part in our 2021 Over the Edge event. Each of them stepped off the ledge during this urban rappelling experience and out of their comfort zones to show their support for our cause. They rappelled down one of the tallest buildings in downtown Grand Rapids.This amazing event was held on September 17th and 18th, coinciding with ArtPrize.

Ambassador, Kimber Smith helped talk about our mission throughout the year by sharing video content on various social media platforms for Easterseals Michigan. In one video, she highlighted the benefits of Easterseals being a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) and our focus on the total health of those we serve.

“It’s not so bad to take your vitals (blood pressure, height & weight) along with waist circumference on a quarterly basis. This can give essential information to the treatment team to help manage your care!

By doing this simple activity it can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Easterseals wants to help you meet your health goals and cares about the whole person!“ - Kimber

OAKLAND COUNTY TOGETHER GRANT As the pandemic impacted our ability to offer face-to-face services, we adjusted to make our services virtual. The largest obstacle to overcome was the cost associated with the technological needs to make telehealth services available. Thanks to the $500,000 Oakland County Together Grant, we were able to ensure that services continued.

It truly made a HUGE difference in those lives that we served.

• We set a goal of 390 adults and children to be served throughout Oakland County • Served 426 in total • Kept people connected to ESM and didn’t disrupt services • Individuals gained digital literacy skills • Strengthened our school partnerships “I can’t believe they are loaning me an iPad!
