NewYou Goals 2021

Did you make a list of your New Year’s Resolutions? If yes, how are they going? If no, consider making some goals for this year and/or some long term goals; it's never too late Achieving goals helps to give your life meaning and purpose. Decide what you really, really, really want to achieve and write it out.

Start out by getting a piece of paper and draw a horizontal line and a vertical line down the middle so that you have four sections Write at the top of the first box the word “Spend Time on Your Passions” and underline Then in the second box write the word “Develop Talents” and underline it In the third box write the word “Live Your Values” and underline it. And in the last box write the word “Solve Problems” and underline it Then brainstorm and write at least 3 items for each of the four categories When you finish that, look at each section and number each item from most important to least starting with the number one Decide how many goals you would like to make for the year (one from each box is a great start) and choose from your list.

Now it’s time to create goals out of the items you choose You should make your goals SMART SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound Once you make your items into SMART goals write them out and also create a plan how you will achieve those goals Put this in a place where you will see it everyday. Maybe it’s on a plain piece of lined paper or even poster board; you can make a vision board to help you visualize your goals being achieved

What is a vision board? A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on what truly matters to you Literally, a vision board is any sort of board on which you display images that represent whatever you want to be, do, or have in your life. You can use markers, stickers, pictures and/or words from magazines, or your own drawings and doodles to make your vision board come to life Don’t be afraid to make updates to it as you achieve or change your goals

So, if you have your goals already, consider some of the tools in this article to help set and achieve those goals But,if you are just creating your goals, know that taking these steps will help you align with your purpose and help you live your life to the fullest potential. You don’t ever have to wait for the New Year to make SMART goals or a vision board “Some people dream of success, while other people get up every morning and make it happen.”

I am proud to say that I am the Ambassador for Dreams Unlimited Clubhouse/Easterseals-Michigan. My time at Dreams has helped me tremendously. I have made many friends and built relationships that will last a lifetime. The Dreamers and staff are like family. DUC is a big support system for me.

I work in the Hospitality Services Unit. I like to clean and cook. I love cooking for the members and staff. It's how I express my love to others. Also, it's very therapeutic.

I love how DUC is not all just business. We also have activities, games, outings and holiday parties.

Before coming to Dreams I had no hope. I was always in the house with little to do. I was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety at a young age. I was told I couldn't work because of my eye condition. All of these traumatic events led me to believe that I was nothing and had nothing to offer to society.

Since attending Dreams I've been more confident, active, and socializing more. In the beginning I experienced several barriers; transportation was inconsistent and often did not show up. This left me feeling suicidal, leading to yet another hospitalization. Since then, with the help of my go-to staff at Dreams and Easterseals’ transportation team I am able to get to the Clubhouse.

To add to the positive things in my life, I am enrolled in school and am attending class to get a high school diploma. I was nominated to be the Ambassador because of the growth and leadership that I have displayed at the Clubhouse. I love that I have been chosen to represent both the Clubhouse and Easterseals. I am proud to tell my story about my mental health recovery and what these programs mean to me. I was also a part of a photoshoot for DUC and ESM.

In the future, I am looking forward to growing as a person, growth in the Clubhouse and eventually working towards college after high school. Thanks for reading my story. I hope it can help others who are going through something similar.

Your 2021 Ambassador, Mo

Making Pictures

Since the pandemic I have been making or coloring pictures using an app called “HappyColoring.” You can find the app in the App store or Google Play on your phone Coloring pictures helps me forget about COVID-19 It also helps me clear my mind about the nasty virus and also other things going on in my life.

I love making art so I can show it to others. Maybe you should give it a try and see how making art from your phone can help you cope with the virus You can paint Flowers, Angels, Cars and a lot more. The app I use is similar to paint by numbers so it is good for everyone. Let me know if you give it a try!

Super Bowl Party

Since the DUC Members’ New Year's Eve Party was such a huge success, I suggested that the DUC Members have a Super Bowl party It was approved and on February 7, 2021 as Tampa Bay and Kansas City were battling it out, 7 DUC Members got together to watch the Super Bowl together on Zoom.

Before the game started, we all predicted what team would win the game. Mo, Karen and a friend and I won as Tampa Bay overpowered Kansas City!!! Tammy and Tracy were the runner-ups. It was a lot of fun having all of us together for these events.

In Honor of My Daughter

On December 12, 2020 life changed forever for my family when our daughter Carol passed away suddenly of natural causes. Carol suffered from many, many health issues beginning at a young age. Some of you may have met Carol, as she helped out with an activity at the Detroit Zoo, visited us at some of our open houses and, most recently, joined us for our picnic in 2019.

In spite of being in constant pain, Carol always set goals and worked hard to achieve them. She was homebound for 2 ½ years during high school, yet graduated on time with her class. Even though it took 7 years, she graduated from EMU in business and finance, then had a nearly 10-year successful career as a Business Analyst.

When she was no longer able to work, her focus turned to family, driving non-stop to New Jersey during the beginning of the pandemic to take care of her 3-year old nephew Austin while her beloved niece Chloe was being born. She was a nurturing, caring person, always looking for ways to make life more fun and comfortable for others.

Carol’s final goal was to be COVID-free and healthy enough to take another road trip, this time to Virginia where her brother Stephen and his young family had moved to. While our grief over losing Carol is immeasurable, we continue to be inspired by her motivation to set goals and never give up. We are also grateful to our Clubhouse family for your many prayers and kind words.

No matter how hard life may seem, keep setting goals and strive to achieve them. Above all, know that your life matters, so love yourself and all those who surround you.

Committees at OCHN

I have joined two committees at OCHN. They both meet once a month. One is the Citizens Advisory Committee where I report to them monthly on what is happening at our Clubhouse. The other committee is the Strategic Planning Work Group where we discuss topics regarding mental health and give our feedback to help them plan. Both groups are interesting and great to attend, and it is great to be representing our Dreams Unlimited Clubhouse.
