CAMS Fact Sheet What is CAMS? The Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) is an evidence-based approach to treating people experiencing serious thoughts of self-harm and suicide. The provider and patient collaborate using tools such as the Suicide Status Form. Together, they identify and address the “drivers” — the root causes behind the individual’s suicidal thoughts.
Key components of treatment include: Empathy Collaboration
Honesty Focusing on what makes a person suicidal
What does treatment look like? Weekly individual therapy Utilization of the Suicide Status form as a clinical roadmap Completion of stabilization plan to consist of coping skills, reducing access to lethal means, etc. Quickly and reliably reduces suicidal ideation usually in 6-8 sessions Decreases in emergency department visits
