Introducing our Fresh New Brand!
We are very excited to announce our new branding! Disabilities have become increasingly complex in the 21st century, and we know that our brand should reflect today’s world and our role in it. This new look gives us the opportunity to bring new relevance to our brand, and introduce ourselves to a new generation. Just because we are changing our logo doesn’t mean that we are changing our services. Easterseals Michigan will continue working
to change the way the world defines and views disabilities by making profound, positive differences in people’s lives every day. This change has been over a year in the works and the goal is to bring clarity and relevance to the Easterseals brand. This new logo will be implemented into all of our locations over the next several months. Much more to come!

Event Wrap Up Thank you to all of those that made these events a success. From sponsors to volunteers, we couldn’t have done it without you!
The Cheers Gala On December 4, Easterseals Michigan hosted the first Cheers Gala at the Bowman Sellers Auto Center in Clarkston. The event was attended by 400 people and $125,000 was raised. Attendees enjoyed an evening of casino gaming, a holiday dance performance by our Miracle League of Michigan Dancers, a wide assortment of beverages, and a strolling dinner. The 2016 event is scheduled for December 2.
For Women Only Snowmobile Ride From February 5 – February 7, Easterseals Michigan and over 30 riders gathered in Grayling, MI for the 29th For Women Only snowmobile ride. This women’s-only event raised nearly $22,000 for individuals served by Easterseals Michigan. Since their inception they have raised over $2.2 million! New riders are always welcome so make plans for next year. You won’t be disappointed!
Beaumont Health Fair On May 18, Easterseals Michigan, along with Beaumont Health Systems and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Southeast Michigan Chapter hosted a FREE mental health fair for the public and health care professionals. The guest speaker was former Detroit Lion, Eric Hipple, who has experienced the loss of a loved one due to suicide, as well as survived his own suicide attempt. The event was attended by over 400 people making this the largest mental health fair that Beaumont has had to date!
Corks, Pucks and Brews The 5th annual Corks, Pucks and Brews event presented by Flagstar Bank, took place on March 8 at the Goei Center in Grand Rapids. Over 200 people came out to sample various wine and beer selections served to them by their favorite Grand Rapids Griffins player. Attendees also enjoyed a strolling dinner, live music, both a silent and live auction, and numerous giveaways. The event raised over $16,000 for Easterseals Michigan.
OUR 2016 AMBaSSADORS MEET STEVE, OUR ADULT AMBASSADOR Ever since Steve was in his 20s, he remembers struggling to stay motivated. He would often lie in bed for long periods of time searching to find energy to get up and move. Simple tasks like taking a shower, brushing his teeth or getting dressed would exhaust him and most days he wouldn’t do anything. One day Steve had enough and decided to get help. He began going to a psychiatrist and was diagnosed with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. Steve’s depression was so bad that many of the doctors told him that he wouldn’t be able to hold a job, or maintain relationships. That didn’t sit well with Steve. He had goals he wanted to accomplish.
Steve spent several years seeing different doctors and trying various programs until he came to Easterseals Michigan. Now, 10 years later, Steve has made enormous strides in his personal development and continues seeing improvements every day. He is married with six wonderful children, and owns his own company. “They are always available, through the good times and bad”, says Steve. “Easterseals Michigan never gave up on me.”
MEET GABBY AND DUNCAN, OUR CHILD AMBASSADORS Laurel and Steve Smith adopted two Russian children – Gabby, 13, and Duncan, 12 – when the children were very young. While the youths have progressed in their decade here, some of the effects of the trauma they endured haven’t been erased. Both children spent time in orphanages, hospitals, as well as private residences, where they were both neglected. Exactly what the children experienced is unknown. Gabby was adopted when she was 25 months old and when she arrived here she was 15 pounds, 27 inches – the size of a typical 4-monthold in the United States. Thanks to hormones, she has grown to about 4 feet 11 inches tall and 80 pounds. Her “hyper vigilance” and rigidity is a sign of post-traumatic stress disorder. Duncan was adopted when he was about 8 months old. He was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder that later developed into Asperger’s syndrome. Both of the children have problems with food and “will eat anything” because they were not well-fed in Russia. In fact, Duncan prefers his food cold because that is what he is
used to. Both have also been affected by a lack of love and affection during infancy, including being held or coddled. That’s why the family took advantage of our new LUNA Model program that steers services to children who have experienced any type of trauma -- whether it’s witnessing or being involved in a violent assault or more subtle, ongoing events such as lack of basic care. The children have made huge improvements since joining Easterseals Michigan and they continue to advance.

SENIOR REACH
®
New Service for Senior Citizens With age comes new social, physical, and emotional challenges and while many seniors have the support of friends and family during difficult times, others do not. Some older adults have more difficulty and require more help, but may be reluctant to seek it or may not know where to go. This is why Easterseals Michigan is proud to offer Senior Reach®. Senior Reach® offers support for the wellbeing, independence and dignity of older adults through community education, mental health services, and connection to community resources. It is a program that identifies older adults who may need emotional or physical support and/or connection to community services and helps them to get assistance before a serious crisis develops. Services include: • counseling • care management referrals • connection to community resources • depression screening and treatment • identification and early intervention of prescription drug misuse or abuse This program will be offered in Oakland, Kent, and Barry Counties and is made possible thanks to the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.
