Our Centennial Year has come to a close, and as the Class of 2026, you hold a special place in our history. You are the first graduates to step off the stage and into the next 100 years of Eastern’s legacy. Your class is the foundation upon which our future will be built, and my prayer is that you move forward equipped with confidence, excellence, and compassion as you step into your careers.

For 100 years, Eastern has equipped students to lead with faith, reason, and justice. Now, emboldened by God’s grace and power, you will join generations of alumni who have shaped communities, industries, and lives around the world.

Your time at Eastern has prepared you not only with knowledge but with the character and conviction to make a meaningful impact. Wherever your path leads, may you walk confidently in your calling, knowing that you are part of something that is greater than yourselves.

Commencement Speaker

Steven E. Clemens ’91

Partner, Goodwin Procter LLP

Steve Clemens is a 1991 graduate of Eastern where he earned a B.A. in Political Science, magna cum laude. He then graduated from Harvard Law School in 1994 with a J.D., magna cum laude.

Following law school, Steve clerked for the Honorable Judge Arnold Raum at the United States Tax Court in Washington, D.C. Steve subsequently entered private practice and is now a partner in the New York office of Goodwin Procter LLP.

Steve’s practice focuses on the tax aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and leveraged buyouts. He often represents private equity funds in matters related to fundraising, acquisition, dispositions, and management compensation. He also has extensive experience in public company mergers and acquisitions transactions.

Steve has been recognized as a Top Rated Tax Attorney by Super Lawyers and was listed in Euromoney/Legal Media Group’s Tax Expert Guide series. He is regularly recognized by The Legal 500 US for Tax: U.S. non-contentious tax, where he was recently described as an “excellent tax advisor

who is willing to explore and discuss options to aid in resolving the matter at hand.” Chambers USA has also highlighted his “incredibly practical and commercially sensitive tax advice” on domestic and cross-border M&A, bankruptcies, and fund formation in its America’s Leading Lawyers for Business list. Additionally, Steve was named a Law360 MVP of the Year for Tax Law in 2013.

Steve lives in Larchmont, NY with Cathy, his wife of 33 years. Cathy is a 1992 graduate of Eastern. They have two daughters: Emily, who graduated from Holy Cross College in 2023 and is a first-year student at Boston College Law School, and Ashley, a fourth-year student at the University of Virginia.

Steve and Cathy have remained deeply involved with Eastern and were named Alumni of the Year for 2026. Steve has served on the Eastern University Board of Trustees since 2004 and has chaired the board since 2017.

In order to recognize the superior scholastic achievement of a student during his/her academic course, the University awards bachelor’s degrees with honors. Transfer students are eligible for these honors if they have completed at least 60 semester hours of Eastern University credit.

Summa cum laude: cumulative grade-point average of 3.90 or better

Magna cum laude: cumulative grade-point average of 3.75 to 3.899

Cum laude: cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 to 3.749

With Distinction: the designation for graduating students with cumulative grade-point averages of 3.8 or better and 39-59 credits earned at Eastern University.

Academic Regalia

The medieval scholar wore a clerical robe so all would know his station in society. The clerical robe was appropriate since all students were expected to become part of the clergy. Distinctions have always been made among the academic grades. Thus, the robe of the doctor is more elaborate than that of the master and the master is different than the undergraduate.

Academic regalia may consist of three parts—the gown, the hood, and the cap. There is considerable variation in European universities. In 1893, a system was adopted in the United States so that one could tell at a glance the university where the degree was earned, the field of study in which the degree was earned, and the level of the earned degree.

Most robes are black; although, occasionally a university may adopt a robe of another color such as Harvard in adopting the crimson as its own. Doctoral robes are longer, fuller, and more richly trimmed with bands of velvet down the front and on the sleeves. These can be black or symbolize a field of study. The master’s gown has sleeves usually cut above the elbow and the bachelor’s gown is a simple pleated robe.

The cap of most American universities is usually the stiff, square black traditional mortar board with a black tassel. The doctoral cap may have a gold tassel with the tassel worn on the left. Many European universities favor the soft beret-type cap. A few American institutions use this cap as well.

The hood is the most interesting and colorful part of the regalia. The largest hood is the doctor’s. The colors of the hood’s lining, arranged in chevrons, symbolize the colors of the college or university which granted the degree. Thus, Eastern University of St. Davids, PA has chevrons of maroon and white. The velvet trim, visible at the neck, indicates the field of study in which the degree was earned. Some frequently seen hood colors and the fields of study from Eastern University are as follows:
