THE WAY TO ILLUMINATE THE FUTURE IS TO SHINE A LIGHT ON SIGNIFICANT PERIODS, EVENTS, ACTS, PLACES, AND PEOPLE FOUND IN OUR HISTORY. AS A PLAYWRIGHT AND COMPOSER, ALUMNUS CHRISTOPHER SMITH ’93 DOES THIS WITH DEEP EMOTION IN HIS BROADWAY PLAY AMAZING GRACE. I had the good fortune to travel to New York City to meet with Christopher, to see the play and experience the message of God’s redeeming grace in the life of John Newton, a slave trader who became a Christian. His faith propelled him to reverse course, become an abolitionist and write the hymn Amazing Grace.

At our University Gathering earlier this year, we heard from faculty and staff who shared their perspectives on the foundation of our University’s educational mission; Faith, Reason and Justice. We share excerpts from their presentations with you here in these pages.

Excitement has been building on campus as construction is underway on our new fitness center and is scheduled for completion in early 2016. This will be a place for our entire community to engage in healthy lifestyle habits and for our athletes to train.

This summer and fall also saw the University taking a global perspective as we embraced creation care and hosted Senator Casey and guests for a climate change panel. We also hosted the executive committee of the Lausanne Movement and a panel who answered the question “What is God Up To?” in different regions of the world including Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Perspectives On Grace EXAMINING GRACE! A WORD WE KNOW SO WELL, AN ACT WE HOPE OTHERS WILL BESTOW ON US, AND YET THE VIRTUES THEREOF WE STRUGGLE AT TIMES TO OFFER TO OTHERS.

scarred from past pains that we have no grace left to give? Regardless of the reason, we will one day have to answer for the grace that we could have administered to others, but chose not to.

So what is it about grace that makes us desire it so? If it is accepted that we have a fallen nature and that our hearts are wicked (the Bible actually says this) then it is not a stretch to imagine that we do terrible things, only to later want reprieve and forgiveness from our thoughts and actions. However, knowing how much we desire unabashed, hold nothing back from me grace, we can be rather hesitant, selective, and plain old stingy in administering this same grace to others. Why is this? Are we afraid of being taken advantage of? Are we unwilling to pull down walls? Worst of all, are we so tired, so empty, so

I recently saw the play, Amazing Grace, written by Chris Smith ’93. A play like this begs the question, are we really capable of grace without first having received Christ’s forgiveness, His grace coming into all of our dark places? Perhaps grace cannot be grasped, but must first be given, and ultimately, received.

In this issue of the magazine, you will find some perspectives on grace. I urge you to please not rush by them, but rather to selah (pause and think on them). Grace examined breaks up the rubble in our own hearts, it simply does not let

us squeak by on good enough. It expects us to empty the most wounded and bitter part of us, admit that it is ours, and somehow believe that a humble, Savior King will redeem, renew, and make us whole again. As you examine grace for yourself this season, may it be deposited in the deepest recesses of your heart, may it settle on you and not release, and may you in turn give it to those who deserve it the least and when you find it almost impossible to give away.

Faith, Reason and Justice are excerpts from speeches presented at the University Gathering in August 2015.

AS A CRADLE CATHOLIC I AM NEW TO EVANGELICAL PROFESSION. My remarks today are not like those of Chris Hall, like those who can open the Scriptures with such eloquence

by EILEEN MCGOVERN, PHD and passion as to DIRECTOR OF ASSESSMENT, create an almost OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL PLANNING, RESEARCH irresistible dynamic AND ASSESSMENT of faith. My voice is much quieter. I entered the convent at 20 to take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. I was cloistered for two years and studied liturgical theology with a graduate of the University of Louvain, one of the wellsprings of Vatican II. Vatican II gave Catholics a new vision of “Church,” one more inclusive of the laity and open to sincere dialogue with other faiths.

After earning an MA in English Literature at Catholic University, I pursued a PhD in Communication Studies at Temple. I ventured forth, wearing the habit, into my first public school. Again, I felt cloistered—different. Some of the undergraduates, especially those in Radio, Television and Film, who tended to affect a certain swagger, looked at me with some distaste. When I was feeling mean, I would say, “Hello,” and attempt to start a conversation.

Some of these students actually shuddered before fleeing. But again the experience of cloister was transformative.

After 31 years I left vowed religious life. My pilgrimage of faith continued when I came to Eastern. However, when I shared with Tom Dahlstrom the idea that God had brought me here, he responded, “No, Eileen, we hired you.” I believe it was both.

Having first told you who I am, I will now address the real subject, faith. So the question: “What is faith?” I believe that with God’s grace, we practice faith in the experience of God’s presence. To me, faith is relational and highly personal.

In speaking of faith, I am adapting a meditative discipline from Ignatius of Loyola. I will dwell briefly on the first four words of the Apostle’s creed, prayerfully holding and hallowing each word. I believe in God. I–the miracle that each of us is, exists, as created in the image of God, the I AM, in whom I live and move and have my being. I am the I of Buber’s I-Thou. Frequently I live, as we all do, almost as an apostate, distracted and oblivious to the great dignity of being a child of God. But God waits upon me, having created me and loving me as I am. But, God continuously calls us to be more, to be drawn into the life of communion and of Trinity.

The second word, believe. Religious belief is so much more than intellectual assent. It is trust and surrender to the mystery of a God who waits upon us lovingly even when we do not recognize God in the reality of our lives, as the disciples did not at first recognize Jesus in the resurrection narratives. But God waits upon us for our assent, as He waited upon Mary’s fiat, her “be it done unto me according to your word.” God believes in us that we might believe in God. Belief is God’s gift to us that we may return the gift of ourselveswillingly and gratefully.

The third word, in, draws me into the mystery of creation, the mystery of the Trinity, of being in graced presence, in communion, in the fellowship of faith, in and in and in. I am not isolated nor estranged but enveloped and enfolded and cherished by the God who is love and calls me to live in this divine milieu.

The fourth word, God, God is the unknowable Thou. God who transcends the boundaries of thought and language to become incarnate in a baby, in a man, in Jesus, the Christ. God is nearer to us than we are to ourselves. Each of us experiences God in our humanity as persons. This experience of faith gives our lives meaning, gives our lives hope, gives our lives the wondrous capacity to love even as God loves, for God loves in us and through us as we lead our lives as Christians.

I see life here at Eastern as belief into action. For Christians, faith nourished at worship bears fruit in acts of faith, acts binding heart, mind, will and spirit. Like St. Paul we are compelled by the love of Christ to live lives of purposeful focus.

The fruits of belief into action here at Eastern have been dramatic in the case of Bryan Stevenson ’81. But Eastern also fosters innumerable unknown stories of quiet heroism, of preaching the Good News of the Gospel in word and in act.

So many day-to-day encounters here are living testaments of faith. I thank my colleagues for their belief into action. People like those in plant ops quietly feeding the hungry in charitable outreach. I urge you to hold fast to your faith. To remember the words of Julian of Norwich: “And all shall be well. All manner of thing shall be well”—if we but keep faith.

Faith Seeking Understanding ST. AUGUSTINE DESCRIBED REASON AS “FAITH SEEKING UNDERSTANDING.” That is an enormous pursuit in the life of a Christian believer.

Who is God? What is His true character?

How can I best b y J . P E R N E L L J O N E S , M B A worship Him? How VICE PRESIDENT FOR can I know Him more?

FINANCE AND OPERATIONS What is His plan for me? Why did He make me? How has He made me? Who is my neighbor? Why should I love him? How should I love him? These questions— these notions evoke a life-long pursuit of knowledge, understanding, experience that draws us ever near to the Father of Lights.

I love the characterization of REASON that’s present on the website for the PhD in Organizational Leadership. The site suggests that REASON is the process—the vehicle, if you will—that moves the scholar from the starting point of Faith to the ultimate destination of Justice. Again it is a lifelong journey…but for many of our students, it is a journey that begins in earnest when they walk through our doors.

The members of our faculty have consecrated themselves to an extraordinary labor. Not only have they committed themselves to shepherding these women and men along their chosen professional paths, but they do so in a manner that broadens the student’s perception of God. This is laudable work indeed. Jesus may have been a carpenter by trade, but His first introduction to the world was as a teacher.

Each of us has a role in helping our students AND EACH OTHER grow in our understanding of God. As members of the body of Christ, the daily bread that we each have been apportioned surely must include a better understanding of God, and His purpose for our lives, and who is our neighbor (today) and how we should seek to love them.

And whether in the classroom or the board room or the residence hall or the Jammin’ Java we can (and should!) help one another in the daily pursuit of these truths.

COMMUNITY is such an important aspect of REASON—the process of faith seeking understanding. As a baseline, just consider the dynamic that exists within the classroom—the communion that exists between teacher and student. Extrapolate from that the potential and the power for COMMUNITY—COMMUNION— throughout our family of believers. For me, the scriptural imperative for such communion is compelling: • Proverbs 27:17 – As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

• Ecclesiastes 4 – Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.

• Hebrews 3:13 – Let us exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

I find all three of those passages to be timely admonitions for our community. Let’s work TOGETHER. Let’s PRAY together. Let’s SEEK GOD’S FACE together.

In closing, there are a couple of perspectives that I’d like to share from John chapter 6. Verses 16-21 chronicle Jesus walking on water as his disciples traveled by boat to Capernaum. The scripture teaches that as the skies turned dark,

the sea grew rough because a strong wind began to blow. The text says that Jesus came to them walking upon the sea, but His shadow appeared to them as a ghost and they became afraid.

Think about that for a minute. The disciples became afraid of the very thing that came to save them. The words from this passage remind me that very often, our pursuit of a deeper understanding of God lies along a path that is tumultuous and uncertain. And as arduous and painful as those paths might be, it is often those journeys that leave us with the most indelible impression of God’s character, of God’s provision, of God’s grace.

The final perspective pertains to the last few verses in John 6, as many that had followed Jesus began to fall away. So Jesus said to the twelve disciples that he had appointed, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” Peter’s declaration in verses 68 and 69 is one of my all-time favorite moments in biblical history. It is a declaration seemingly made from a place of utter and complete surrender to the sovereignty of God. “We have believed that you are the Holy One of God. And as we have walked with you and talked with you and prayed with you and preached with you—we have come to know—our faith has come to UNDERSTAND—that YOU ARE the Holy One of God. Yours are the word of life. So where would we go!?!”

My prayer today is that your faith and mine will obtain this same sort of understanding.

IN 2008 I TRAVELED TO SARAJEVO IN BOSNIA-­HERZEGOVINA WITH THE MENNONITE CENTRAL COMMITTEE. MCC is a non­profit relief and development agency that provides service in more than 60 countries around the world.

I serve on the Board of Directors and fairly often I find myself traveling to places that have known conflict, violence and deep struggles with issues of justice. On this trip to Sarajevo I toured a number of sites where MCC is working to promote peace after the horrific decade of violence across the region during the 1990s. My husband and I walked the streets of Sarajevo, which is a lovely city in a truly picturesque setting. Walking down the city center avenues where boutiques and stylish bars have returned was unsettling. You see the glamour that fills the first story of the building only to be eclipsed by the bullet riddled facades on the 2nd floors and higher. This beautiful city, struggling to renew itself, is still riddled with the trauma of the recent past. You can feel it. It’s like a whole city is depressed and trying to put on a good face.

Humans have a terrible time with justice.

And yet, my journey with Christ has always led me to seek justice. When I pray I feel compelled to attempt to understand and to walk with those who feel the wounds of so much misguided justice­-seeking around the world and in my neighborhood. I’ve been to Iraq, just before the first Gulf War, playing badminton with teenagers in Baghdad who wanted to hear about Hollywood 6

and to Columbia in the jungles where poor farmers are displaced or worse by government forces, backed by the US on one side and drug producers on the other. I’ve had tea with Jewish settlers in Palestine and with Palestinian Christians who have lost their lands there. I’ve seen racial conflicts in barrios in Los Angeles and had lunch with migrant workers in the Central Valley of CA. I listen to stories of racial profiling and systemic oppression in my counseling office in West Philadelphia where I also hear stories of despair and of hope in the midst of struggles in churches and in families from across the city.

Children struggling to forgive parents. Wives to forgive husbands and vice versa. Friends wounded by trusted friends. Waves of anger.

The impulse for revenge in the name of safety or health or freedom or being in the right. The stories go on.

Justice is hard to find. I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to work at Eastern University where justice is part of our DNA. I want to live and work in an environment that promotes justice and cares for those who need it. I’m grateful that we attempt to have difficult conversations. I’m delighted by colleagues who look for ways to give their best thought and energy to working in a world that knows more about power and acquiring it than it does about justice. We have some amazing and inventive colleagues doing all kinds of work for justice. We human beings have a very hard time with justice. But God still cares for all the oppressed, even you and me. It’s important to live and work for faith, reason, and justice, even when it hurts.

It seems to me that the only safe context to pursue justice, is a Christian one. We must follow Jesus as our guide in seeking justice. He offers the context for justice in his well-known parable

of the Prodigal Son – which is really called the Parable of the Lost Son. A lost son returns and is greeted with lavish love. A disgruntled son who expected a justice that would reject such a return, learns a deeper lesson about the desires of the father’s heart – desires for relationship restored, for love as the central goal in all things. Justice is only safely sought in the context of love – a lavish love that looks on the horizon for a way to restore relationship. This is the context into which we all are invited, even wooed. The father looks for the lost son to return and embraces him; the father goes out from the party to look for the older brother, another kind of lost son, a son confused about justice who thinks he is right, who feels wounded that his father doesn’t agree with him or follow the principles the son expected–he stayed and worked his thoughts tell him; he did the right thing. The father comes out from the party to find this wounded justice-­craving son. He looks for him even as he looked on the horizon for the Lost Son. He seeks the indignant son in his isolation.

The father disregards his rights and his position and goes out to restore that relationship as well.

Let’s all live in this justice ruled by love and celebrate the call to faith that it entails.

Inaugural Dean of the College of Business and Leadership

STRONG LEADERS LEAD WITH GREAT PASSION AND VISION. TO MAINTAIN ITS COMMITMENT TO GREAT LEADERSHIP, EASTERN UNIVERSITY IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE WE HAVE SELECTED AN INNOVATIVE SERVANT LEADER, DR. DOUGLAS CLARK, AS THE INAUGURAL DEAN OF EASTERN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND LEADERSHIP. In a recent interview, Dr. Clark shared some of the strategic priorities for the University’s newly formed College of Business and Leadership (CBL). In order to move the CBL towards its envisioned future, Dr. Clark envisions several key milestones. First and foremost, is to equip students with knowledge and skills to meet their career interests, and in doing so spur economic development through service and leadership in local, regional, and international settings. The CBL is also seeking recognition by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, a leading specialized business education association. Expanding the reach of its portfolio of graduate degree programs, the CBL will launch the MBA in Management in a fully online format in early 2016.

Rounding out the short list of early priorities, the CBL will be prospecting for new opportunities to engage in the “world class agenda.” Dr. Clark

was selected for the delegation of the Greater Philadelphia Leadership Exchange, a long-standing civic initiative that brings together business leaders and organizations across different sectors to take action that will transform Greater Philadelphia into a globally competitive region.

In collaboration with the University’s partnerships, alliances, and other associates, the College will expand the business and leadership programs and strengthen the University’s position in the increasingly competitive higher education marketplace. The CBL’s academic program offerings include a vast array of outstanding programs, including accounting, business administration, economic development and organizational leadership, along with a highlyengaged faculty and staff serving students in undergraduate through PhD programs.

As the College continues to draw upon past experiences and the expertise of faculty and staff, “we look to those experiences for great perspectives and look forward to identifying opportunities, planning together and taking action in the pursuit of those opportunities. That is the work ahead” Dean Clark added. While capitalizing on the college’s established partnerships, “we will continue to inform our decisions about program

offerings to serve the needs of individuals at a local, regional and international level.” In a climate of competition, “we are committed to understanding the demands of the labor market and equipping our graduates for professional success and fulfilling careers.”

When asked about his philosophy of leadership, Dr. Clark answered, “I was drawn to Eastern because of its missional calling to present the ‘whole Gospel for the whole world through whole persons.’ I truly embrace this servant style of leadership, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Inaugural Dean of the College of Business and Leadership.”

Dean Clark’s strategic goals, experience and convictions will help Eastern University to continue its Christian commitment to serve and promote social justice worldwide.

EASTERN UNIVERSITY IS PLEASED TO SHARE THAT THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW FITNESS CENTER IS WELL UNDERWAY AND DUE TO BE COMPLETED IN JANUARY OF 2016. IT IS AN EXCITING TIME FOR THE ST. DAVIDS CAMPUS AS THIS IS THE FIRST OF MANY PROJECTS TO BEGIN IN PHASE I OF EASTERN’S NEW CAMPUS MASTER PLAN AND THE FIRST MAJOR ATHLETIC FACILITY IMPROVEMENT SINCE THE INSTALLATION OF OUR TURF FIELDS. Pernell Jones, Vice President of Finance and Operations, outlined the master plan in the Spring 2015 issue of Eastern Magazine and Eastern is thrilled that the plan is beginning to come into fruition.

The former fitness center measured 1300 square feet. The new fitness center will replace the existing recreational gym, and expand into a two-story center totaling 8,200 square feet. The lower level will consist of a welcome desk, weight racks, free weights, various machines, a large

turf area for specific sport exercises and a batting cage. The upstairs will focus primarily on cardio exercise with treadmills, stationary bikes, stair machines and rowing machines.

Jadon Ramsing, a sophomore on the men’s soccer team, happily welcomes this expansion: “This past winter, working out with the team was a tight space; especially when we had running days on the treadmill. I am looking forward to being able to exercise as a whole team. The new fitness center will give us the opportunity to do that.”

Jules Leco, a junior on the women’s soccer team, shared similar thoughts: “The new fitness center is going to have lots of room. There will be no wait times and everyone will be able to workout like they want to. The entire team can workout together at the same time. The new fitness center will also be a great place to do rehab for injured athletes as well.” The increased space this facility will provide is significant, however, the largest benefit is the ability for team members to better

unite with one another as they improve their strengths and talents in the gym together.

With approximately 3,800 students and 20 athletic teams, this new facility will provide more space for not only student-athletes’ personal fitness and training but also for Eastern’s student body as a whole. Nathan Stewart, Director of Athletics and Athletic Development, described the benefits of this improvement by stating, “With over 8,000 square feet of workout space, the new fitness center will provide all Eastern University students with a state of the art fitness facility.

This new facility will dramatically enhance the student athlete experience and provide all of our student athletes with first class facilities for off season strength and conditioning training as we compete for championships on the courts and fields.” Both faculty and students alike are eagerly awaiting this facility’s end result and anticipate great things in 2016.

PURSUING MEANING IN POP CULTURE

to illustrate “the complex and meaningful relationships between narrative, music, and lyrics.” “There were many steps along the road, but the entire project seemed like a giant puzzle to work out, and that kept me moving forward through the roadblocks and gaps in the literature,” he described. “ At the end of the day, I really enjoyed the process of writing such a large and comprehensive thesis.”

But Steve’s analysis on Green Day ended up reaching much farther than his Rhetorical Criticism class. After handing in his final paper, his professor, Dr. John Hatch, became instrumental in helping Steve’s research reach new heights.

With Dr. Hatch’s assistance, Steve went on to present his paper at the Eastern Communication Undergraduate Scholars Conference in Philadelphia and saw it published as the lead article in the 2015 issue of the Lambda Pi Eta Undergraduate Journal.

“I could not have come close to achieving this without the constant guidance and encouragement from Dr. John Hatch. He was the one who initially encouraged me to submit my paper to the conference, and then tirelessly helped me through edits and revisions, and always gave me the encouragement I needed.” Steve said.

IN TODAY’S HIGH­-TECH SOCIETY WHERE INTRICATE, MULTI­MEDIA MESSAGES HAVE BECOME A CONSTANT, IT OFTEN BECOMES DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, TO ARTICULATE THEM WELL AMIDST ALL THE NOISE. Whether they come through a speech, an article, an image, or a tweet, meaning and purpose can be found in nearly everything. And as any good Communication Studies student knows, being able to comprehend these messages is one of the best ways to truly understand the intricacies that make up 21st century America.

For recent Eastern alumnus, Stephen Koffel ’15, this pursuit of meaning in today’s pop culture came in the form of music analysis. As a Communication Studies major, Steve quickly fell in love with the complexity of his courses and soon decided that a concentration in Interpersonal/Organizational 10

Communication would be perfect for his personal and professional development.

When it came time for him to take a Rhetorical Criticism course in his senior year, Steve put his analytic skills to the test by taking apart Green Day’s 2004 album, American Idiot. “I have always understood music as a meaningful and powerful mode of persuasion,” he said. “This class forced me to be aware of the meaning that exists everywhere around us, even in the never­ending torrent of of pop culture viral videos, campaign speeches, Twitter posts, music albums, and broadcast media.”

His final paper, entitled Rage and Love: A Rhetorical Analysis of Green Day’s American Dichotomy, analyzed the award­-winning album from two different critical angles and sought

While this honor (which he describes as humbling and enjoyable) became a highlight of his young academic career, Steve looks back most fondly on the unique relationships he formed with professors like Dr. Hatch. Being allowed to see the Communications faculty as “mentors, models, and friends”, he says, added incomparable value to his experience as an Eastern student.

Since graduating in May 2015, Steve has already put his degree to good use. He is currently working as an Enrollment Strategist for Phil­Mont Christian Academy; a position which, he says, makes constant use of his communication education.

“Eastern’s Communication Studies department set me up for success by providing me with not only the skills to communicate, but the ability to think critically about the issues that we face as individuals, as citizens, and as Christians in this complex world,” he said. “If everyone at Eastern received the same education that I did, we should have no trouble fostering massive change!”

Some are in graduate school this fall: Vicki Wallace ’15 (BS Biochemistry) started doctoral studies at the University of Delaware in biochemistry, Mary Frances Barr ’15 (BS Chemistry) is at the University of Pennsylvania studying for a PhD in organic chemistry and joined the renowned research group of Dr. Gary Molander, and Samuel Wilson ’15 (BS Biochemistry) is enrolled in a Masters program for urban education to teach chemistry in the Memphis Teacher Residency program and is currently teaching science to high school students. Some graduates have jobs: Jocelyn Paul ’15 (BS Biochemistry, Templeton Honors College) is teaching middle school science and literature at Jackson Hole Classical Academy in Wyoming for two years before going to medical school. Ben Barnhardt ’15 (BS Biochemistry, Templeton Honors College) works for Cray

Valley Specialty Chemicals. Justin Frye ’15 (BS Biochemistry) is an analytical chemist at Avon.

Tuan Au ’15 (BS Biochemistry) started his own business. Others are volunteering and searching for interim jobs before medical school.

There have also been notable accomplishments

by Chemistry Department faculty and students on the research front. The research of Dr. Kelly Mowery was recently published in the highly regarded analytical chemistry journal Analytica Chimica Acta. Due to its “exceptional high quality,” it was selected as the featured article and appeared on the cover of the journal. The research was conducted on campus with four Eastern students Ji Min Kim ’16, Mary Fran Barr ’15, Mike Morabito ’16, and Loc Nguyen ’13, and focused on the development of an electrochemical method for detecting fucoidan.

This polysaccharide has a wide range of potential therapeutic applications and is currently the subject of numerous clinical trials. The research was carried out in the Andrews Hall research lab over the last two years during semesters and during the Summer Science Research Program.

Dr. Mowery also involved two collaborators from Australia, Damien Stringer and J. Helen Fitton.

Chemistry major and Templeton Honors College student Zachery Custer ’16 has had a productive

year. Zach entered Eastern with a plan to complete the BS Chemistry degree in just 3 years and even began research in the lab of Dr. Park in his first semester. He has excelled in his coursework and research. As this year’s Quaker Chemical Research Scholar, Zach had the opportunity to present work (along with Nicholas Fales ’18) at the American Chemical Society Student Poster Competition as well as the 79th annual Intercollegiate Student Chemists Convention. It was at the ISCC that Zach earned a 2nd place award in the organic chemistry division for his oral presentation evaluated by five criteria: presentation, research project, design of the investigation, interpretation of data and conclusions, and response to questions. His research with Dr. Park was titled Palladium Nanoparticle-Catalyzed Carbon-Carbon Coupling Reaction: The Influence of Stabilizers and UV Irradiation. Zach is working as an industrial intern for Cray Valley Specialty Chemicals in Exton doing all kinds of advanced chemical analysis. He plans to attend graduate school to study sustainable fuels.

Hall’s Foundations in Christian Spirituality has grown to have over 200 students in a single class.

Despite the size of the class, he felt this was his one chance to be with these students, and he did not want to lose that chance because it was why he was at Eastern.

Dedicated to Christ: The Legacy of Dr. Hall

So how was Hall led to his new position with Renovaré? He responds, “This time a year ago I had no idea this would happen, and then what I sensed over the summer was ‘new.’ I can remember thinking, Lord, what is that all about?

I got the best job in the world; what is all that about? As it turns out I had been working with Renovaré for the last few years, and I had grown to love the organization...and then this position opened up....It was like I got a nudge from the Holy Spirit­‘something new’­and then a year later I’m saying goodbye to everyone and moving through the new door.

Hall is honored that he has been chosen to lead a Christian organization such as Renovaré, which holds conferences, retreats and seminars all over the world on spiritual formation.

WHEN DR. CHRISTOPHER HALL FIRST ARRIVED AT EASTERN UNIVERSITY’S MCINNIS HALL TO TEACH UNDERGRADUATE CLASSES IN THE FALL OF 1991, HE HAD NO IDEA WHAT GOD HAD IN STORE FOR HIM. During the past 24 years he has not only served Eastern as a distinguished professor, but also as a Provost, Chancellor, Dean of the Templeton Honors College and Dean of Palmer Theological Seminary. Hall has not only affected the lives of thousands of students, but also the lives of faculty and administrators. After many dedicated years at Eastern, he will be leaving to become the President of Renovaré, a Christian organization focused on spiritual formation.

I had the honor of interviewing Hall and hearing his story of how he came to Eastern. He started out as an adjunct professor, and when a full-time position opened up he decided to “toss his hat into the ring.” He recalls, “One of the happiest days of my life was when the Dean of the undergraduate school, Alan Tharpe, stuck his 12

| FALL/WI NTER 2015

head around the corner into my office and said, ‘Chris, do you want a job?’ and I said ‘Yes!’.”

Over the years, Hall has taught many courses including, Nature and Meaning of the Old Testament, Nature and Meaning of the New Testament, Pain and Suffering, The World of the Early Church, and his “trademark course” Foundations of Christian Spirituality. Even while holding administrative positions, Hall would find time to teach Foundations. “[Foundations] developed with me,” said Hall. “I never thought it would get so big, but part of it was I was really interested in how human beings, God’s image bearers, change and what we struggle with spiritually; what is the process and dynamic of transformation? I started off with a class of 19... [and] conceived it in the riches of the classical tradition, or the great tradition in terms of spiritual tradition...This is something that students are hungry for. I think we are hungry for love and hungry for what it means to live a holy life if we go about it in the right way.”

Hall sums up his experience at Eastern with one word: “wonderful.” He says that he will miss the students, and likewise we will miss him. Hall truly cares about his students, and has made all the difference in the lives that he has touched during the past two and a half decades. Future Eastern students may not have the chance to have him as a professor, but they will be sitting in classes that have been developed by him, meaning his legacy will be left for generations to come.

“The goal is always to learn to love God and love our neighbor well... How concretely as an educational institution, whether it be administrators or faculty or students, how we live well before God as we are loving God and loving our neighbor? It’s really hard, but it’s a really good thing,” Hall says.

We bid Dr. Hall an affectionate farewell and wish him God’s blessings as he travels on to lead Renovaré. He will be truly missed by students and colleagues at Eastern University.

SENATOR CASEY LEADS PANEL DISCUSSION ON BIBLICAL IMPERATIVE FOR CLIMATE ACTION

ON SEPTEMBER 18, 2015 EASTERN UNIVERSITY WELCOMED UNITED STATES SENATOR ROBERT P. CASEY, JR. TO THE MCINNIS AUDITORIUM ON THE ST. DAVIDS CAMPUS. Casey was joined by the Reverend Mitchell Hescox, president and CEO of The Evangelical Environmental Network; Sister Mary Elizabeth Clark from the Sisters of Saint Joseph’s Earth Center; Daniel P. Scheid, assistant professor in the Department of Theology at Duquesne University; Gretchen Dahlkemper, national field manager of Moms Clean Air Force and Eastern’s own Dr. David W. Unander, professor of biology. The panelists combined to reflect on climate change, brought to the world’s attention a few months previously through Pope Francis’ encyclical. Additionally a major discussion item was The Clean Power Plan, a proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency, to invest in clean energy.

Senator Casey’s experience regarding environmental issues is extensive. He has restricted the influx of out-of-state garbage through the Clean Vehicles Act and the TRASH act. He has also named Lake Erie’s waters as a marine sanctuary and strongly encouraged the USDA to better support farmers who are trying to prevent pollution.

When the Senator took to the microphone he humbly expressed, “I feel a sense of unworthiness, in some ways, leading off this discussion because this panel has great expertise, great passion, great commitment and scholarship on these issues…As unworthy as I am to lead off, I’m truly honored to be a part of this. This topic that we’re talking about and the mission-driven approach that we must take to it is a mission worthy of a great country and worthy of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

“Climate change impacts every person in the world, making it the greatest moral challenge of our time,” stated Reverend Mitch Hescox, “it also presents the greatest opportunity for hope in building a clean energy economy providing good jobs, clean air, pure water, and a quality future for all God’s children worldwide.”

Like the panelists in this discussion, Eastern University is also an active member in the environment. Environmental stewardship is one of the many elements that make up Eastern’s commitment to faith, reason and justice, and Eastern is a member of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Leadership Club.

Eastern has also provided the St. Davids campus with solar energy and purchases wind power.

While climate change is a worldwide matter, Casey challenged those who attended the discussion and the residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to lead the way to this transformation. It is clear from the array of panelists and participants that many share this common passion for bettering our environment, and Eastern hopes that, someday soon, we will all begin to see these improvements. Until then, Eastern will continue to make positive strides in environmental leadership.

NATIONAL HISPANIC PRAYER BREAKFAST

THE NATIONAL HISPANIC PRAYER BREAKFAST IS ESPERANZA, INC.’S PREMIER NATIONAL EVENT THAT BRINGS TOGETHER HUNDREDS OF HISPANIC CLERGY, FAITH AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO WASHINGTON D.C. FOR WORKSHOPS, PRAYER, ADVOCACY, AND WORSHIP. Esperanza College of Eastern University staff help coordinate the event and teach some of the workshops. This past June, Esperanza hosted distinguished guest speakers, musical artists, and clergy leaders who offered prayers on behalf of our nation, communities, and families.

One important aspect of this event is honoring Hispanics who have gone to great lengths to improve the lives of Hispanics everywhere. Dr. Jesus Esquivel received the Esperanza Advocate Award for the amazing work he has done as National Director for HIPEC Research at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. The Esperanza Spirit Award was given to Jonas Gonzales for his ministry in telecommunications, connecting millions of Hispanic Christians around the world as the founder and president of Enlace TV. Nora Sandigo was this year’s recipient of the Mujeres de Esperanza (Women of Hope) Certain Woman Award because of her incredible display of 14

compassion and advocacy for American children who have no one to turn to when their parents are deported.

Attendees had the opportunity to learn from experts and each other on various issues of importance to the Hispanic community such as immigration, education and religious freedom; as well as visit elected officials on Capitol Hill

Attendees also found out about Esperanza’s new Associate of Arts in Christian Ministry, designed for those interested in urban ministry and working with immigrants. The conference culminated on the morning of the third day with the signature Prayer Breakfast, featuring speakers such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Representative Mike Coffman, White House Cabinet Secretary Broderick Johnson, a video message from Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, and more.

This year, over 650 faith leaders representing thousands of parishioners across the United States, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Spain, came together to learn, network, and advocate on Capitol Hill.

EASTERN UNIVERSITY OFFERS NEW 4+1 ENGINEERING PROGRAM WITH VILLANOVA

EASTERN UNIVERSITY HAS INTRODUCED A NEW 4+1 ENGINEERING PROGRAM FOR THE 201516 SCHOOL YEAR. THROUGH THIS INNOVATIVE AGREEMENT BETWEEN EASTERN AND VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY, EASTERN STUDENTS NOW HAVE THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO ACCESS THE RESOURCES FOUND IN VILLANOVA’S COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING FACILITY WHILE MAINTAINING THE INTIMACY AND CHRISTIAN EDUCATION PRACTICED ON EASTERN’S CAMPUS.

This engineering agreement consists of a 5­year program that leads to two degrees: a BA in Math from Eastern University and an MS in Engineering from Villanova University. Students will study for four years at Eastern’s campus with classes in math and science, prerequisites needed for the graduate engineering program, and, in some cases, graduate engineering courses. Following their time at Eastern, students will then study at Villanova University for one to three years, depending on the student’s timeline.

“John Newton’s life is such a great example of the fact that this one person, his change, his transformation and what he did with that, changed hundreds of thousands—millions of lives.”

F

ew revolutions start with a bang. When tremendous change sweeps through, either in the world at large or within us, it almost always has a small start. The same could be said of the English abolitionist movement and the life of John Newton as depicted in the Broadway play, Amazing Grace. Playwright and Eastern alumnus, Christopher Smith ’93, stumbled across Newton’s story quite randomly. He remembered that he was “walking through a library,” when he “just pulled it off a shelf.” After reading this story, it came to life in Smith’s mind and he felt compelled to do something about it. This simple act would soon unfold into a destiny moment where two lives, centuries apart, would meet to remind us of the access we have to unparalleled grace.

On this side of grace, knowing Newton’s story, it is easy to conclude that he was worthy of rescuing because God’s talents were so apparent in him, and after all, he played a great role in the abolition movement and ending of slavery in Britain. And yet, how often do we utterly ignore uncultured, uneducated, angry and likewise embittered souls and leave them to their own demise? Do we do this because time, mercy and grace seem too lofty a gift to bestow on them?

Smith, like Newton, recounted how he was an “outspoken, in-your-face atheist who could give you ten reasons for why God is dead and life is meaningless.” Smith said he resonated with Newton’s story that he encountered over 20 years ago, because he connected to Newton’s “aimlessness and seeing people as objects, rather than people, due to a misunderstanding of God and self.” Smith’s grace story started during his participation in youth group, which he only went to because a local youth leader moved in next door and girls were a part of the mix in the gatherings. Smith conveyed that he was “an incendiary who would ask the most inflammatory questions to try to make people feel stupid,” and how “the only reason he read the Bible was to try to break others down.” However, reading the Bible only to prove how foolish Christians were led Smith to an understanding of a gracious and loving God, whom he would later come to serve.

A major factor in Smith’s transformation was in the way he chose friendships and treated people.

Rather than dehumanizing others in order to get what he wanted, which he describes as “the root of all slavery,” Smith relearned how to see 18

and relate to others and he found that “change within communities is always based on change within human hearts; you can’t have one without the other.”

Though he participated in theater and played in a band in his youth, composing a theater piece was never on Smith’s radar. In fact, he cannot read or write music! His true passion is teaching.

Reflecting back to his time spent at Eastern, he recalls some meaningful words from Youth Ministry Professor, Duffy Robbins, that stuck in his mind: “if you are not living your life in the presence of a young person, you just wasted your time because impacting the next generation is not something you stop and just do, it is something that involves allowing them to see your life and understand you...I want to impart to the next generation the skills they need to change the world.”

Since the outcome is known and the gift of grace was received, it is easy to delight in who these men, Newton and Smith, became. Newton, a self-proclaimed wretch and Smith who called himself “an incendiary,” both turned their lives around. According to Smith, “mercy is not getting what we deserve. Grace is when you deserve condemnation, but you receive the gift. You can see it in people who forgive their oppressors, people who endure horrible physical suffering and diseases…they have the grace to overcome that.” This is all well depicted in the play.

And what can we say of the play, as if words would be enough to convey the depth of emotions felt in watching slaves subjugated to a passage designed to break the will and enslave the spirit. A phenomenal work that exemplifies Christ’s redemption through an undeserved recipient, while mastering a weighty subject,

riveting songwriting and clear cast cohesion, the play intricately connects experiences from Newton’s life and intertwines symbolic enactments of what slaves, freemen, and abolitionists experienced. According to Smith, “John Newton’s life is such a great example of the fact that this one person, his change, his transformation and what he did with that, changed hundreds of thousands—millions of lives. If he had held onto his old life or had been quiet about his new life, that wouldn’t have happened.” Bob Duffett, Eastern University’s President, shared his thoughts on the play: “What I appreciated about Chris Smith’s Amazing Grace was both his artistic and historical competence in telling the life of John Newton. I was so moved that at intermission I checked the details of Newton’s life on my iPhone. Smith used his artistic, theological and cultural insight, shaped at Eastern University, to help him write the play, lyrics of the songs and the music. In many ways this play lifted our values of faith, reason and justice via the life of John Newton.”

The play opens with a striking British flag, harmonious music, and silhouettes of joyful Africans dancing behind the flag. It then abruptly and disturbingly shifts to silhouettes of captured

and enslaved Africans, no doubt bound for journey to foreign and unknown lands. Smith begins the play in this way to “bring the audience into the story, to get them excited and to get them on board and show them England…and then reveal that this is all on a foundation of slavery.”

We don’t want to ruin it for you, but if you get a chance to see the play when it goes on tour, we highly recommend it. Let’s just say you won’t ever forget the vessel-sinking scene, the acting that seems to lift you on stage to participate with the characters, the refined acting of Erin Mackey who plays Mary Catlett (the love of Newton’s life), and the depth of writing covering a complex and weighty period quite responsibly. When Smith said, “I want people to see real tears and hear joy, spirit and laughter…I want people to experience how John Newton lived through a hurricane on a sailing vessel during the dark night when he finally cries out and says, ‘God, have mercy,’” he is not kidding. What this play does is start a conversation in your head; one you must unpack as you wrestle and turn over grace, race, sin, God’s plan, redemption, pain, suffering, choices, freedom, hope and so on. The conversation does not end when the play ends, rather it has just begun.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOD UP TO? The Lausanne Movement at Work

ON JUNE 23RD EASTERN UNIVERSITY HOSTED A DISTINGUISHED INTERNATIONAL CROWD OF GUESTS FOR A DINNER AND PANEL DISCUSSION ENTITLED WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOD UP TO? THE LAUSANNE MOVEMENT AT WORK. THE LAUSANNE MOVEMENT WAS ON EASTERN’S CAMPUS AT THE TIME FOR A BOARD MEETING AND A GATHERING OF THEIR INTERNATIONAL DEPUTY DIRECTORS, WHICH PRESENTED THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR CONNECTING WITH THE EASTERN COMMUNITY. Organized by Dr. Al Tizon, former Associate Professor of Holistic Ministry at Palmer Theological Seminary, the event was attended by President Duffett and Provost Iddings along with many other Eastern faculty and staff who came to listen to the panel of Lausanne leaders discuss issues related to the church’s global mission. Dr. Al Tizon welcomed the attendees and informed us that the countries represented in the room included Iran, Chad, Canada, Korea, Brazil, Egypt, Japan and Ukraine among many others.

The Lausanne Movement began in 1974 when Dr. Billy Graham and John Stott held an international congress on world evangelism in Lausanne, Switzerland attended by over 2000 leaders from 150 countries. Dr. Leighton Ford, President of Leighton Ford Ministries and Honorary Lifetime Chairman of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization opened the event and explained the Lausanne Movement in this way: “Lausanne is a place in Switzerland, it is an event – a gathering of thousands of people. It is a vision of coming together for the global task of the church around the world. It was a covenant we made together – a covenant to work, pray and plan together for the evangelism of the world. The spirit of Lausanne is cooperation, of working together for the Gospel, a movement that God has blessed. Lausanne is also a family.”

of Directors; Nana Yaw Offei Awuku, International Deputy Director, Africa; Dr. Lindsay Brown, International Director of the Lausanne Movement; and Dr. Michael Oh, Executive Director/CEO of the Lausanne Movement.

Dr. Tizon’s first question to the panel was “What are the two most pressing issues in the part of the world that you serve?” Nana Yaw Offei Awuku replied, “One is that of growth and the second is that of tensions. The way the evening is framed, ‘What is God Up To?’ When you look at it from Africa you would see the sovereignty of God. In the beginning of the last century with just 8% of the continent’s people being Christian, Africa is set to see the greatest of religious change. Over the last century, as of 2010, 48% of the continent is now Christian. A continent that was once called a place of darkness, has seen God’s light.”

Dr. Michael Oh responded with a discussion on the Asian countries of Japan, China and Korea stating, “Japan is the second largest unreached people group on earth, and we are wrestling through a season where we are holding onto hope in the gospel and the power of the gospel to transform lives. We are very optimistic that the gospel is in very good shape and the gospel is very powerful to be used by the Holy Spirit to transform peoples and nations.” Of China, he outlined the Mission China 2030 vision which calls for a coordinated commitment to train leaders, a plan to plant churches at train and subway stops in the over 100 cities with populations of 1,000,000, and a desire to send 20,000 missionaries out of China; which equates to one for every missionary sent into China over the 200 year history of sending missionaries to the country. When discussing Korea, Dr. Oh said he would “ask for our prayers, as it relates to the call of the Lausanne Movement to the leaders of the global church, and to all Christians to be His leaders, leaders of humility, integrity and simplicity.”

Dr. Lindsay Brown from the United Kingdom explained that “Europe is a complex continent where you have to argue the case for God and fight back against aggressive atheism.” Two illustrations of fighting back which he finds encouraging are an increase in the number of mission conferences for youth such as the Urbana Mission Conference, and a “re-emphasis on the public proclamation of the gospel in universities.”

In his last question, Dr. Tizon asked the panelists to discuss the relationship over the last 40 years between evangelism and social justice. Nana Yaw Offei Awuku replied, “I am deeply encouraged to hear these stories from around the world.

You can’t put God in a box. He is amazing and sovereign. Over the past 40 years the church has MICHAEL OH EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CEO contributed greatly to health, education, and agriculture. Africans think holistically. We are a people who love community.

In spite of all the rich resources in Africa, it is the least developed continent and you will come to see how the church in its response puts evangelism and social justice together to help build.”

Provost Iddings closed by saying, “I am so thankful that we have been able to gather this evening for the only cause that matters. I am glad for what Lausanne is doing, their movement, and for what God is doing and very thankful for the topic of this evening ‘What is God Up To?’. It’s not about us.”

LIVING OUT GRACE IN AN UNFAMILIAR PLACE

THIS PAST SUMMER I HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE WORLD TO FOLLOW A DREAM. GROWING UP, I NEVER HAD MUCH; MY FAMILY STRUGGLED LIKE MANY OTHER AMERICAN FAMILIES. THROUGH THE HARD TIMES, I CONTINUOUSLY SAW THE WORK OF THE LORD IN MY LIFE AND IN MY FAMILY. GOD UNCEASINGLY PRESENTED MY FAMILY WITH OPPORTUNITIES BEYOND OUR WILDEST DREAMS. Recently, my parents moved to Qatar, a country in the Middle East. Most people ask, “Why in the world would someone move to the Middle East at a time like this?” But my parents feel truly sent by God and know that this is where He wants them.

As for myself, I needed an internship desperately!

I was coming to the end of my Junior year and still had nothing lined up. That led me to live with my parents over the summer where I began to intern for a small digital media company stationed in Dubai. I was able to experience and see some amazing sights in Qatar and Dubai. My internship allowed me to stay in Qatar most of the time. I thought my job as an intern would be very simple and not too much responsibility; however, to my surprise it became so much more. I was quickly thrown into many projects, even some that were funded by the Qatari government. I was in charge of editing film, meeting with CEOs of companies, and trying to learn Arabic all in three months.

Working in a Middle Eastern country during Ramadan had its challenges. While most work hours in the United States are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., during Ramadan in Qatar and Dubai most Muslims work 9 a.m.–1 p.m. and stay up all night eating with their families and praying. This means that although I might have wanted to go to bed at 10 p.m. I quite often received calls from my supervisors well past midnight. This is where grace came in. I not only had to adjust to a different culture than mine, but I had to still work

just as hard regardless of my frustrations with interrupted sleep and time management.

During this time, I was attending an amazing church. We would sing songs about freedom and chains being broken. Meanwhile I was sitting in a country where bondage is so thick and people do not know that Jesus died on the cross for their sins. It brought tears to my eyes to think about how the millions of people around me did not know the Lord like I did. That pushed me to show Jesus at every moment; to live and to forgive.

Although as an intern waking up in the middle of the night was not enjoyable and I was doing a ridiculous amount of work for free; I believe God brought me to the Middle East to show the people the grace of God. Being the only Jesus that these people will probably ever see has had a huge impact on my life and the lives around me.

It is my prayer that the relationships I made, the conversations I had, the work I did, no matter how

This was more than a dream internship. It was a life changing experience to push me to live by God’s grace every day.

“ I HAVE A PASSION FOR THE ABSENT, WHO IS NOT AT THE TABLE, WHO IS NOT SPEAKING, WHOSE VOICE IS NOT BEING HEARD, WHOSE BODY IS NOT PRESENT…THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY PASSION…THAT IS MY CALL.” First called as a child growing up in Puerto Rico, Dr. Loida Martell-Otero had a sense of call from an early age, growing up in New York and later serving in the Church in Puerto Rico. Yet, a lingering and on-going question remained rooted in her mind focused on “Why was I called?” As a part of a Puerto Rican ministerial dynasty, she learned early on that there was no place for her voice. Each member of her immediate family held a distinctive role in the church. Dr. MartellOtero’s father was a pastor, mother was a leader, grandmother was a Sunday school teacher and her brother was a leader. As a result, Dr. Martell-Otero decided that she would make her presence known and her voice heard. At the age of nine, as a shy child Dr. Martell-Otero hesitantly 22

walked to the pulpit of the church to participate in an altar call. While she stood there waiting to be received and accepted by the congregation, she immediately realized that no one was paying attention to her because she was Reverend Martell’s daughter. As an adult reflecting back on the embarrassment of this moment she made a promise to herself, “…I will pay attention to who is absent and who is present… everybody matters.”

Dr. Martell-Otero’s childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian began around age 10 in light of her first visit to a veterinarian’s office. She had always loved animals. In pursuit of this profession, she gained two very distinctive honors in the field. Dr. Martell-Otero is the first female Puerto Rican veterinarian to practice in her home country as well as the first Puerto Rican woman to be accepted to what was then Tuskegee Institute, but now is Tuskegee University, School of Veterinary Medicine. Yet, while her love for

medicine increased, there was still the notion of the calling that tugged at her soul.

In fact, Dr. Martell-Otero affectionately refers to medicine and ministry as her two loves, but there came a point in her life when she was led to choose between those two loves. In making this life changing decision, she recalled the most difficult parts, which were leaving the island of Puerto Rico and walking away from her practice.

However, she says that she chose the greater of the two loves, God. Since choosing the call to ministry, Dr. MartellOtero has paved the way for many Latina women to become ministers and leaders in the local church and abroad. She has received numerous awards and accolades, and has built an extensive curriculum vitae. Dr. Loida Martell-Otero holds a PhD in Theology from Fordham University, is an ordained American Baptist minister and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. She has served

PALMER as the interim pastor at First Baptist Church of the Community in Queens, New York and was an associate pastor at the Spanish Christian Baptist Church of Soundview, in the Bronx for 15 years.

She is currently the Professor of Constructive Theology at Palmer Theological Seminary. Her writings include Latina Evangélicas: A Theological Survey from the Margins (Cascade Books, 2013), co-authored with Dr. Elizabeth Conde-Frazier and Dr. Zaida Maldonado Pérez, which has been well received, and was recognized by the Hispanic Theological Initiative. It is the first systematic articulation of a theology from the perspective of Latina Protestants in the U.S. She has also published numerous articles including “My GPS Does Not Work in Puerto Rico: An Evangélica Spirituality.”

Recently, Dr. Martell-Otero received the highest and most prestigious award given to educators by the American Baptist Churches/USA, the Richard Hoiland Christian Education Award. This award is given to lay or professional leaders who have made a significant contribution to the work of Christian education in the church and community. Dr. Martell-Otero shares that this award is particularly dear to her heart because it was awarded for her work in nurturing diversity in the classroom, a reflection of her ministerial passion. “…. diversity is about who is at the table, who is not present,…who is not at the table.. we use this little word diversity and make it synonymous with the census bureau…Black, White, Latino, Asian, when it is so much more…

People matter, people’s stories matter, people’s perspectives matter… We haven’t learned how to cherish one another…When I think about diversity I think about the model that Jesus Christ articulated and embodied in the proclamation of the Reign of God.”

Serving Jesus Globally and Renewing Churches Locally

PALMER SEMINARY HAS HISTORICALLY BEEN A PIONEER IN ENGAGING INNOVATIVE METHODS OF THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION. Part of this engagement includes its longstanding partnership with Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, a vibrant “unapologetically youthoriented” community of over 16,000 members and the largest African-American Baptist Church in Pennsylvania. This year one of our professors, Dr. Francesca Nuzzolese, and the senior Pastor of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, Reverend Dr. Alyn Waller, have “traded spaces” so-to-speak.

While Dr. Nuzzolese teaches a seminary course on Engaging Grief and Loss at Enon Tabernacle this semester, Dr. Waller, a Palmer alumnus and board member of Eastern University, is teaching a class on Church Renewal and Evangelism at Palmer. I have the privilege of being his student.

A fellow classmate and member of Enon, Wanda Pate ’16, said, “Dr. Waller not only challenges us in how we serve in our own ministries, but he also offers a global look at how we minister the Gospel. I have been challenged in how we serve Jesus globally while renewing how we serve our churches locally. This class is a must for all!”

While challenging students in our thoughts on church renewal, it is only fitting that this semester Dr. Waller has also been named the president of the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention. The Lott Carey movement was founded in 1897 by African-American Baptists who were committed to foreign missions. The organization is named after the Rev. Lott Carey, a freed slave who was one of the first American and Baptist missionaries to West Africa. His leadership led to the development of the first Baptist church in Liberia—The Providence Baptist Church in Monrovia. The Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention, while still maintaining a strong presence in Africa, has now made missions partnerships all around the globe.

Their current mission is to be a “global missional community that helps churches extend the Christian witness throughout the world.”

Dr. Waller has served for many years with Lott Carey and is quoted saying he was “raised” in the Lott Carey family, attending many events as a youth. The foundation laid in his youth has continued in Dr. Waller’s work with Enon. While Dr. Waller has traveled all over the globe to share the good news of the Gospel, his passion is revival

work in Africa. Enon has participated in revivals and mission work particularly in Kenya, Uganda and South Africa. Through the deep relationships built in South Africa, Reverend Jacobus Nomdoe was installed as pastor of Enon Tabernacle South Africa in 2009, which now partners with Enon (US) in mission and ministry outreach in the Western Cape. “I look forward to urging deeper commitments and inviting new partners to help strengthen the Christian witness around the world,” shares Dr. Waller.

presses toward the mark for the high calling (Philippians 3:14)

MANY CHRISTIAN WORSHIP TRADITIONS EMBRACE AS THEIR OWN THE PSALMIST’S PROMISE TO GOD: “I WILL BLESS YOU AS LONG AS I LIVE; I WILL LIFT UP MY HANDS AND CALL ON YOUR NAME.” (PSALM 63:4) When he enrolled in Palmer Theological Seminary’s ESCM Certificate Program years ago, Alfred Duncan MDiv ’15 never imagined that his own ability to lift up his hands to the Lord would be severely threatened before he had finished his course of study.

Determined to honor his church’s sacrificial financial support of his studies, Alfred wasted no time moving through his courses. When he noticed a growth beginning to develop on his neck, he attributed it to the hard preaching and gutsy singing that are part of his Pentecostal worship tradition. Prioritizing his studies at Palmer, Alfred delayed seeking medical attention. But the lump on his neck grew, until he finally sought help in the emergency room of a university hospital.

The diagnosis was encouraging: a bronchial cyst that could be treated with medication. Alfred felt free to focus on his studies since the cyst could be addressed more aggressively later. But when things did not improve, a specialist discovered

that Alfred actually had cancer that had advanced to the fourth stage.

Alfred was still adamantly committed to “pressing toward the mark” in his studies, and also realized he could not delay aggressive treatment. One day he had twelve healthy teeth extracted in preparation for his surgery. Even after those grueling hours at the dentist, Alfred attended his ESCM class that evening. As the surgery date approached, Alfred became ever more ill—but he made it to his ESCM graduation!

Conferring with him and his family about surgical strategies under consideration, one doctor’s statement stood out: “I’m going for the cure.

Mr. Duncan, if you can take what I’m going to put you through, I’m going for the cure. By the way: my name is Dr. Savior.” Alfred recounted in an interview, “That was literally his name! That connection gave me hope.”

It came to light during the consultation that there was a possibility that the doctors would have to remove Alfred’s voice box during the procedure.

Alfred resisted, bearing in mind that he had a high calling to fulfill: “I could not in good conscience tell them, ‘Go ahead and take my voicebox,’ because for me that constituted pretty much an end to the ministry, the type of ministry that

God had called me to.” Fortunately, he emerged from surgery with his voicebox intact, but doctors did have to remove muscles from Alfred’s mouth, ending his days of playing saxophone and bassoon. Extensive musculature was also removed from Alfred’s shoulder. Three months after surgery, scar tissue was expected to render him unable to lift his arms. Says Alfred, “I told the doctor that I need my arm, because I use my arm in ministry!”

About two weeks after being released from the hospital, Alfred resumed “pressing toward the mark of the high calling,” beginning classes in the Master of Divinity degree program at Palmer Seminary. At the time of his surgery, Alfred’s life expectancy had been a mere eight months. But years later, Alfred was elected Vice President of his graduating class. The class Vice President always renders the benediction at the end of the Commencement ceremonies.

One of his surgeons was there to see Alfred do what no one thought he would ever be able to do again: he raised both his arms as he spoke the closing blessing over those gathered to worship! Alfred says, “For me it was a sign and a symbol of spiritual victory… THIS is what God has brought me through.”

They finished their season with a No. 19 national ranking and their third NCAA appearance in the past four seasons.

EASTERN ADDS TRACK & FIELD Eastern University Athletics has added Men’s and Women’s Indoor & Outdoor Track & Field for the 2015­-16 school year. As an upstart program, the Track & Field teams had limited participation in the initial winter indoor season and will focus more on the spring outdoor season. They are competing as NCAA Division III members of the Middle Atlantic Conference and are being coached by Cross Country head coach, Mike Wilson ’10. A former cross country and track athlete himself, Wilson notes that the addition of these sports meets a need in bringing more students on campus. “This will help our entire athletic department,” Wilson said. “For many student­athletes, track & field is a second sport that they take very seriously and are extremely competitive in.” In 2016-­17, the programs will compete as fully-­funded teams and will ideally build a total men’s and women’s squad of 120 athletes within the next four years.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL: SPRING SPORTS POSTSEASON For the first time in the school’s NCAA history, all four of Eastern’s spring team sports appeared in the conference postseason at the same time. Women’s Lacrosse and Softball made it back into the conference tournament for the first time since 2012, Baseball advanced for the first time since 2001 as a No. 4 seed, and Men’s Lacrosse completed their season with their fourth straight Freedom Conference Title.

NATE STEWART SELECTED AS NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Eastern University Athletics was proud to name Nate Stewart as the new Athletic Director and Director of Athletic Development in August 2015. “We are very pleased that through our exhaustive national search, in the end, Nate Stewart emerged as our number one candidate,” said Vice Provost for Student Development and Retention, Dr. Bettie Ann Brigham ’74. “His NATE STEWART enthusiasm and skill set as well as his understanding and commitment to the EU mission and the role athletics plays in that mission will serve us well as we move into a very exciting time in the life of the University.”

Stewart arrived at Eastern in 2011 and since then has served as both the head coach for Men’s Basketball and the assistant athletic director for advancement.

With the departure of former Athletic Director, Nate Davis, to Gettysburg College, Stewart inherited 20 NCAA Division III teams as well as the lead on major athletic developments like the construction of a new fitness center and the addition of track and field. “I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and working together with our talented and dedicated staff as we strive to win championships on the fields and courts and most importantly to succeed in the classroom,” Stewart said.

THE WORLD IN GENERAL—AND THE EASTERN UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY IN PARTICULAR—LOST A GIANT OF A MAN IN MAY OF THIS YEAR WHEN, IN BRITISH AVIATOR AND POET JOHN GILLESPIE MAGEE’S WORDS, DR. JOHN MARKS TEMPLETON, JR. “SLIPPED THE SURLY BONDS OF EARTH” TO JOIN HIS LORD AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST. IT WAS A FASCINATING, SELFLESS JOURNEY THAT BEGAN IN NEW YORK CITY IN 1940 AND ENDED THREE-QUARTERS OF A CENTURY LATER. “Jack,” as everyone knew him, was a beloved husband, loving father and engaged grandfather.

His professional life encompassed naval service, decades of renowned success as a pediatric surgeon and 20 years of able leadership of a complex, far-reaching foundation. Jack thought strategically without losing sight of and appreciation for details. He knew when to share his wisdom, and he was both knowledgeable and respectful of the power of thoughtful silence.

Although he was blessed with significant temporal wealth, he espoused the incalculable benefits of thrift and restraint. Jack knew that his real treasure was in heaven. He was an indefatigable ambassador for Christ and always listened patiently to people of every stripe and creed before he’d share his own enduring faith.

Excellence was one watchword that described Jack Templeton. He was an exemplary Trustee of Eastern University since 1984. During his tenure, 28

he served on a variety of committees on Eastern’s Board. One of his most significant legacies for Eastern was his participation in the creation of the Templeton Honors College, in 1999. Dedicated to first-class education with the Great Books at its core, the Templeton Honors College is an integral part of Eastern.

A graduate of the George School, Yale University and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Templeton began his medical career at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He trained under distinguished pediatric surgeon C. Everett Koop, M.D., who later became Surgeon General of the United States.

After his service in the U.S. Navy, Jack returned to Children’s Hospital and became known internationally for pioneering work in pediatric surgery, especially the separation of conjoined twins. It was hardly a surprise that the most difficult, complex cases made their way to him.

It was no less predictable that Dr. Templeton rose to be the head of the trauma department of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

In 1995, Jack left medicine to become president and chief executive officer of the John Templeton Foundation, which was started by his father, the late Sir John Templeton, founder of The Templeton Fund. Sir John Templeton was known as “the father of mutual funds.”

Among the things Jack championed in his leadership of the John Templeton Foundation

was publishing. The Templeton Press was added to the Foundation in 1997, and an online magazine was started in 2010. A literary science publication began three years later. Among the works in which Jack invested his personal attention was a small book on the importance of thrift. Jack always carried a pen and paper, because his insatiable curiosity made him want to record what he learned from others.

Respectful of history and its foundational role in life, Jack was also fearless about the future, especially new or different ways to reach the world for Christ. When a fellow elder at his church described a nascent online ministry, Jack gave him special encouragement to use the then-new technology to advance the Kingdom of God. Dr. Templeton will be remembered for many things by a countless number of people near and far. Those privileged to know Jack personally continue to feel the acute loss of a great friend and colleague. He leaves enduring legacies in many aspects of his rich life. Included prominently among them are the precious gift of his name and his exemplary generosity to the Templeton Honors College at Eastern University.

Alumni News Eastern Alumni Class Notes 1950s Arthur McCauley ’55, BD ’58 has two great-

grandsons and one great-granddaughter. He served as an interim pastor at Ventnor Community Church (2005-2011) and is currently the resident clergy at Seaview Baptist Church, assisting in various ways. He is also doing some pulpit-supply preaching. He continues to be chaplain of the Linwood Fire Department. Art enjoys his hobby of model railroading. Since his retirement, he has traveled across the U.S. by train three times, most recently in 2013. His favorite memory from Eastern is “the intra-school football games where I came out of my shell and learned to plunge in and take the bumps and bruises (a good prep for the ministry).”

Douglass Willey ’55, BD ’59, THM ’62. DMin ’75

and his wife, Rosemarie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary over Labor Day weekend.

He also shares that his daughter went back to school in her 40s and graduated college with high honors. He also has three grandchildren who graduated from high school this year. Doug’s favorite memory from Eastern was service in the kitchen with Frank Wertz MDiv ‘74 as well as the friendships established there. Something his classmates would be surprised to know is that he has two doctorates and one earned from Eastern and a DD from California Christian University.

1960s Marilyn (McGloughlin) Berger ’60 is married to Bill

and has three stepdaughters (Phyllis, Marie, and Laurie) and seven grandchildren. She attends the First Baptist Church of Collingswood, NJ. She is retired and enjoys quilting, building and collecting miniature dollhouses and furniture, needlepoint, cross stitch and reading.

James Hester Jr. ’60 is a member of Second

Presbyterian Church in Little Rock and his hobbies include photography and travel. Jim’s favorite memories from Eastern include his classmates, 40

the beauty of the camps in the spring and fall, the diner in downtown Wayne, and Prof. Allen. Things his classmates would be surprised to know is that even though he was a professor of Religion at the University of Redlands, for several years he taught computer programming and computer literacy. He has also traveled to seven continents, over 100 countries, and all 50 states, as well as lived in Europe for four years.

Judith (Robinson) McGinnis ’60 moved to

Springdale, AR to live with her oldest daughter, Sharon (McGinnis) Riggenbach ’83, and her husband. She had been living in Pittsburgh, PA with her second oldest daughter and her family for 20+ years. They are now planning to move to NC as soon as the AR house sells. She has moved 14 times since 1960 and she’s hoping that her next move will be her last to Eternity! She has four children, five grandchildren and 1 greatgrandchild. She attends the First Presbyterian Church of Springdale where she sings in the choir.

She enjoys sewing, reading, and walking the pets.

Judith’s favorite memories from Eastern were the times of fellowship with friends and enjoying the beautiful campus. The big question she is pondering is where she will live in NC. Sandra (Vitullo) Sanfilippo ’60 shares that

grandbaby #5 will be arriving in January and Sandra will celebrate her 50th anniversary in April of 2016. Sandy continues to be self-employed as a tax preparer/enrolled agent and continues to trek yearly from California to the Jersey Shore.

She attends High Street Baptist Church where she serve as financial secretary and is on the Board of Directors of two non-profits (Young Life and Cindy’s Celebrations, a ministry for seniors).

Sandy’s favorite memories from Eastern include the friendships and the beauty of the campus.

Barton Kelso ’65, MA ’68 has been happily married to Priscilla for 46 years. She was an English professor from the Philippines and served on Eastern’s Board of Trustees years ago.

Their daughter, Rachel (Kelso) Alabiso ’93 is a Communications Director of an international nonprofit, The American Ireland Fund. Bart received his MA in Religion from EBTS in 1968 and an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Seminary in 1982. Through the years he has pioneered Young Life in Greater Boston, worked with special-needs children in the Newton Public Schools, pastored an international Presbyterian church in Cambridge, and is a certified supervisor/mentor for 28 interns from four seminaries in MA and the Philippines. Since retiring, he works part-time in short term ministry, interim pastoring, and guest preaching and most Sundays he enjoys the “privilege of the pew”.

He is also a trained docent and school guide to Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum where he leads tours and helps adults and children discover the natural world. Bart has several favorite memories of Eastern, which include “lustily singing” hymns in chapel that were new to him and nourishing to his new faith, being a part of the soccer team that beat Villanova, and learning poetry from Milton to Cummings, all of which he still remembers and loves to recite. His classmates would be surprised to know that although he was “disguised as a mild-mannered history major, I was actually a Presbyterian missionary to the Baptists!” The big question he is pondering at the moment is that “at this stage in life, I need to major in being and minor in doing, hoping that Christ will be honored in both.”

Carolyn Shafer ’65 has a son who lives nearby and

so far, her “grands” are four footed and furry. She does look forward to regular grandchildren in the future. After Eastern, she received her MA from Trenton State and an MDiv from Earlham School of Religion. Much of her career was in public schools but also did agency work and spent several years as a hospital/hospice chaplain. She attends the Barnegat Monthly Meeting and Religious Society of Friends. She also teaches parenting at Interfaith Hospitality and group drumming.

life-long friends she has made and dodging the geese and their “by-products” on the way to class.

Her classmates would be surprised to know that she adopted her son from Brazil. The big question she’s pondering at the moment is “where will my path lead me next?”

George Allen ’67 reports that he is trying to get

used to the 70 years of age bit. However, with two adult children, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, he and Carolyn (Heeren) Allen ’67 cannot deny their longevity. They met on 9/10/1963 during Freshman Week, poolside, at (then) Eastern Baptist College, and married 2 1/2 years later, had their daughter Susan his Senior year, graduated and was commissioned as 2nd Lt of Marines during the same ceremony. Then the ’fun’ began...13 months in Vietnam, a couple years in California, and some management positions before becoming an entrepreneur in 1980. Since then, success in real estate investment and management, a dozen books authored, and induction into the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, IN. All, in part, having to do with a good liberal arts education start at (now) Eastern University.

Richard Haviland ’68, MAR ’70 has recently been

recognized by Examiner.com for his 100th published work on Leadership and Organizational Performance. In addition, the Delaware Alliance for Non-profit Advancement in collaboration with world recognized author Jim Collins (Good to Great, Great by Choice) was selected as six consultant facilitators approved to work with clients using Collins’ models.

Melissa McBain ’69’s latest play, Altar Call, is the

story of a mother of a gay son who is also the daughter of a minister. It is loosely based on her own life. It opened in Philadelphia from Oct 9-17th at the Random Act of Theater, after two successful productions in Illinois.

1970s Dr. Kathy (Norris) Grant ’71 recently became

Operations Director of Anatomic Pathology at Duke Medicine, Duke University Health System in Durham, NC. Elizabeth Turner ’72 shares that she just had a

successful two week outreach to law enforcement with jesusnerforgets.net. She has lived out of her truck for five years now and downsized her life to very little. Free! She stays mainly in the West. His mercies are new every morning!

Evelyn (Shegog) Stupp ’76 is an ordained United

Methodist pastor and licensed marriage and family therapist. She lives in Allentown, PA. 1980s Nancy (Wright) McHugh ’80 is married to Michael

McHugh and they have five adult children and one granddaughter living in VT. She received her MA in Marital and Family Therapy and did post-grad work at the University of PA. She is also ordained in the United Church of Christ, and is serving at the Waitsfield UCC. Nancy’s favorite memories of Eastern include friends, volleyball, and trips to the Dominican Republic. The big question she is pondering is retirement.

Lisa (Weinhold) Prescott ’80 works at the

University of Delaware as an Assistant Director of Admissions. Her primary focus is working with the coaches and compliance office in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes. She is a member of PACAC (Pennsylvania Assoc. for College Admissions Counseling) where she serves on the Conference Planning Committee. Lisa also serves on the Green Liaison Committee and is a member of the Women’s Caucus. Lisa also plays in an adult dodgeball league during the winter and co-ed softball league during the spring and summer; she enjoys running for exercise. She has two grown sons. When asked about her favorite memory of Eastern, Lisa says that four years of being a three-sport athlete has given her many, many great memories of EU, from driving the team van to all away games to representing EU at the USFHA National Field Hockey Tournament in Valley Forge (’76) and Ellensburg WA (’78).

Outside of sports, encountering the giant turtles on the walking paths to the dorms was always a great surprise and treat!

Katherine (Brodbeck) Rush ’80 has been

married to Dan Rush for 13 years. She has a 28 year old son; 3 Step-daughters and 5 stepgrandchildren. Prior to her husband’s relocation to the Greater Philadelphia Area 13 years ago, she worked for WellSpan Health System in York, PA. Since relocating she has remained a full-time homemaker. Katherine is a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Church in Limerick, PA. Katherine and her husband are involved with various Parish activities and planned on volunteering for The World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in September, 2015. Her favorite memories include her first two years in Doane Hall: The Pink Panther, Pepperidge Farm Goldfish in the water fountain, The Campbell’s Tomato Soup dorm room she shared with Alice (Massimilla) Cook ’80, Open Dorm nights, climbing in the window after curfew, traying down Doane hill, walking to Minella’s, Pizzi’s pizza, eating Breyer’s Mint Chocolate Chip ice-cream when it was still made in Philly, Winterim in the Dominican Republic, working in the Sociology Office, and Anne and Don Gray’s parties. She has many, many fond memories of warm, fun, and interesting friendships. Something her classmates would be surprised to know about her is that she was confirmed a Roman Catholic in April of 2014.

Was it a Baptist thing? Who doesn’t eat dinner on Sunday night? For four years he was starving on Sunday night and he’d like to know the reasoning behind that!

Karen Venditti ’80 is living in her cottage by the

ocean and enjoying her three granddaughters, who she says are growing up way too fast. Last year, she took them on several trips including the Olympic Peninsula, San Jose and Japantown, Monterey, and of course, Big Sur. She is retired and does a lot of volunteer work with Pacific Wildlife care - grant writing, strategic planning, and volunteer recruitment. Although she is not active in a particular church, she is “very spiritual and seeks to live as Christ taught us.”

She loves to hike, read, work with photography, take road trips, play the piano, and pull weeds.

Her memories of Eastern include her first two years in 1963-1965…the “old days” when the library and dining room were in Walton Hall. She remembers when the girls chased the boys all over campus on a Sadie Hawkins-type event.

Hilarious! Her classmates may be surprised that she turns 70 years old this year! The big question she is pondering is “The older I get, the more comfortable I get with not really knowing very much.”

Eric Widness ’80 shares that he has two great

daughters and he is now living the bachelor life in Palm Beach, FL. After an almost 25 year career in the Sports & Entertainment Industry that brought him from Madison Square Garden’s N.Y. Knicks & N.Y. Rangers to Major League Baseball & Major League Soccer, Eric has settled into the rewarding task of non-profit Youth Crime Prevention with the National Assoc. of Police Athletic Leagues.

There is no money in it, but helping turn kid’s lives around and helping them stay out of prison has its rewards beyond a paycheck. Eric is a proud 42

founding member of Palms West Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in Loxahatchee, FL. Elder, Pulpit Supply, and Sunday School Teacher. He started it in a Middle School 25 years ago with 25 attendees and Eric has seen the Lord bring it to their own Church Campus with 300 members.

Outside of raising two great kids, having a significant role in this new church growth project has been the most meaningful experience of his life. Eric’s favorite memories of Eastern include Jan (Stewart) Blynn ‘78 and Sue (Mathers) Steege ‘81, although not at the same time. “Need I say more??”, he says. The Lord blessed him with relationships with two great Eastern girls who were much more mature than him and kept him on the straight and narrow. He says he never would have made it through four years of college without either of them. He never thanked them.

He also remembers Larry Zeigler’s history classes even if he was a business major. Also, Basketball in a hot gym and Baseball on a frozen field; Ken, Rocko, Bogey, Don & the Funk Brothers guiding him his freshman year and H.J. & Smitty

always being up for a trip into town. Good friends = Good times = Good memories. Something his classmates would be surprised to know about him is that he has turned from a New York City boy to a South Florida redneck. Bass fishing contests, golf fanatic, Mudfest four-wheeling, micro-brewer, makes his own wine, (the Merlot is great but the Cabernet seems a tad too much on the dry side) biking around Lake Okeechobee and waiting for the next season of College Football to start-up. Go Gators, Go ’Noles! The big questions that he’s pondering at the moment is probably

married to Bob Butler for almost 22 years. One son, Bobby, will be a high school senior this year. He has been quite involved in missions and is interested in pursuing a career in Theater.

He recently appeared as Lord Farquat in Shrek!

The Musical. Dorothy is the Associate Director Billing Operations for AT&T Services, Global Fraud Management Organization in Dallas.

She is responsible for the Landline / Uverse Consumer Fraud group and Theft of Identity group and manages a team of over 60 managers and representatives. She celebrated her 15th anniversary with AT&T this year. Dorothy keeps busy with Church and Volunteer activities. She and her family attend the First Baptist Church in Kaufman, TX where she sings in the choir and play handbells in the handbell choir. She volunteers every year to help cook and serve at their community Thanksgiving luncheon and was asked to lead the volunteer effort this year so she’ll be busy in November. She also volunteers at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas as an usher serving several evenings each month and at Dallas ComicCon as a Con Volunteer assisting con visitors and guests. Among other volunteer activities, she enjoys working with the women served by Hilltop Recovery Ministries where she teaches crafting classes several times a year and assist in their fundraising efforts. Through these volunteer activities and work group volunteer functions, Dorothy has accumulated many volunteer hours throughout the last few years. She received the President’s Volunteer Service Award each year for the last three years.

On top of her work, church, family and volunteer activities, Dorothy runs a home based jewelry business. She sells her designs at local craft fairs in the Dallas Area and through Facebook (look for Designs by Doti). She started making jewelry to keep busy in the evenings but friends starting

buying each piece she wore to work or church so she ramped up her scale. The evenings Dorothy spends at home are normally spent at her jewelry table putting new pieces together. Dorothy has so many great memories from Eastern, but her favorites are times spent with the girls she lived with in Doane Hall. (3 years on C1st and her final year on B2nd). She met so many wonderful ladies during her years at Eastern and is honored to count them among her lifelong friends!

Bob Thomas ’86 has been married to Kristin (Skibbie) Thomas ’86 for 27 years and they have

two sons, Sean (14) and Nick (12). They live in beautiful Portland, OR. Bob obtained a Masters degree in physical therapy in 1993, and have

served in executive positions for two healthcare companies for the last 16 years. He’s been a healthcare author and lecturer for the last 19 years. They attend Sunset Presbyterian Church, and enjoy vocal music and spending time with family. Bob’s favorite memories of Eastern include late night “studying” at Denny’s, students and faculty, touring choir and Turning Point, and Cheryl Barclay ’86 singing “The Lord’s Prayer”. Palmer Alumni Class Notes 1930s Congratulations to Walter N. Hill THB ’38 who celebrated his 100th birthday on July 21, 2015, surrounded by family and friends. Walter had a 57-plus year calling as a Baptist minister. He remembers those years of active preaching, noting he “has many good memories,” especially of the 30 years he spent in Arkansas working alongside his wife, Rita. Walter and Rita were married for 64 years before she passed away on Nov. 2, 2006, at the age of 88. They had three daughters, four grandsons, and five great grandchildren. His daughter, Judi (Hill) Holloway ’65, and her husband, Stan Holloway ’65 are alums of Eastern Baptist College. Two years after Rita’s death, Walter fell in love for the second time, at the age of 93. He and his new love, Catherine Shutters, were married in October 2008. They attend Christ Evangelical Free Church in Lehighton. An Eagle Scout, possibly the oldest in Schuylkill County, Walter enjoys reading and playing chess. He played golf well into his 90s.

and his wife, Linda Lee, have two sons and two grandchildren. He was a pastor for three years at Vincent Baptist Church, a Navy Chaplain for 10 years, spent 32 years in Japan mission… 10 years at Christian Service at Iwakuni Marine Base and 25 years at Kante School and church development. Karl is an accomplished artist, won the gold medal at Boys Hi NYC, and published (illustrated) two books.

He received his Masters of Theology at Princeton, NJ and his studies for his DMin at Berklyn, CA. His favorite memories of Eastern were being with the Seminary Chorus and enjoying the Dramatic Society.

Something his classmates would be surprised to know is that he accomplished his mission and navy work and that his artwork was displayed at an exhibit in Tokyo, Japan.

1970s Marcia Patton MAR ’73, MDiv ’84 is Executive Minister of the Evergreen Association of ABC, Tacoma, WA. At the American Baptist Home Mission Societies’ luncheon on June 27, Marcia received the Kenneth L. Cober Regional Discipleship Award.
