BSW Social Work Minor: Social Welfare

Department Distinctives

• Accreditation: The department has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education since 1974 (the earliest year accreditation was available). • Theory meets practice: Students are stretched to think deeply and critically about problems facing individuals, families, communities, and organizations, and how to effectively engage, assess, and intervene. • Faculty mentoring: Professors provide extensive individualized advising, mentoring, and support. • Student Social Work Association: SSWA is a student run club that focuses on building community among social work students, while offering formal and informal student learning and service opportunities. • Two Internships: Students complete internships during their junior and senior year earning 600 hours of field experience. Internships are arranged by the

Field Director and are in settings including aging adults, at risk youth, child advocacy, child welfare, developmental disability, domestic violence, food insecurity, homelessness, immigration, pregnancy, schools, substance abuse, and truancy. • MSW Advanced Standing: Graduates who maintain a ‘B’ average are prepared to enter MSW Advanced

Standing programs across the country, which can be completed within one year.

Our Graduates Are Now Working:

• With BSW Degrees in the public and private sector for adoptions/foster care agencies, alternative schools, churches, domestic violence/homeless shelters, drug/ alcohol centers, nursing homes, pregnancy centers, probation offices, refugee services, and truancy agencies. • With an MSW degree as child advocates, clinical social workers, community organizers, executive directors, grant writers, hospital social workers, nursing home administrators, private practitioners, researchers, and university faculty. Eastern has prepared me for a career within the social services field by molding me into a faithful, reasonable, and justice-driven individual who will not simply go with the flow but will stand for what is right, regardless of the situation. ”
