"THE VOICE" FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

On Sat, Oct 14, 2023 Australia will hold its 45th Referendum, the first in 23 years. Of the 44 referendums only eight have been carried, including a massive win in 1967 when 91% of people voted to include Aboriginal people in population counts.

Referendums are only held to change the Australian constitution (The rule book for governing Australia) - It took seven years of open public debate, between 1891 and 1898, to agree the first constitution, so it was no rushed or casual undertaking.

IT IS COMPULSORY TO VOTE IN A REFERENDUM, and a big responsibility for all who vote, as CHANGES TO THE CONSTITUTION ARE “FOREVER.”

Because of this, decid ing which way to vote can be a challenge. Here are some of the questions we’ve heard people asking in the last few weeks: -

Q: I understand that the referendum is about “Closing the Gap” between indigenous and non-indigenous people, so that eventually there is no gap at all. If that’s true why does the constitution need to be changed “for all time”?

A: A better alternative might have been to trial a new system by legislation and make sure it works before “enshrining” it in the constitution, but those in favour of the referendum say “we’ve already tried that and it didn’t work.”

Q: I’m keen to make the right decision, but find I am torn about what to do. My heart says vote “Yes” and my head says vote “No.”

A: This is a common problem. In Bryce Courtney’s book “The Power of One,” Hoppie advises Peekay that the most effective order is “First with the head, and then with the heart” - If your objective is to help “Close the gap” decide first what’s the best way, then pursue that path with all your heart.

Q: “Survival I nte rnational” suggests there are “About 500 different Aboriginal people’s in Australia” and many of them are not even in favour of the voice. How can “One Voice” represent so many different points of view?

A: Those who support voting "Yes" have spent many years discussing and

documenting their plans for "The Voice” and believe they have structure that will work. However, the government (who have called the referendum) say they will not work out the details until after the Constitution has been changed and the voice enshrined for ever.

Q: I saw recently that singer Kamahl keeps changing his mind on how to vote, going from "No" to "Yes" and then back to "No". I find I’m in the same boat, switching back and forth as I find new information, is that true of other people?

A: Roy Morgan’s latest survey shows that 17% of people are still undecided, so you are in good company. It’s fine to keep changing your view until you’ve got all the information you need to make a decision.

Q. I find the whole thing confusing and boring and wish the government would focus on reducing inflation and bringing down the price of energy. Isn’t there a simpler way, one that wouldn’t involve changing the constitution for ever?

A. Aboriginal leaders Jacinta Nampijinpa Price and Nyunggai Warren Mundine (Anthony Mundine’s cousin) believe they have an effective alternative that works to empower marginalised Aboriginals by giving them better education and even starting their own businesses. They say steps can be taken immediately without having to change the constitution forever. MP Jacinta Price is Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians and says “I plan that one day I’ll be out of a job.”

Q: I’ve seen that, when voting, a tick in the “Yes” box will be counted as a “Yes”, but a cross (X) in the “No” box will mean that the vote is invalid and be the thrown away. Is this true?

A: Sadly it’s true. If you want to vote “Yes” then a “Tick” or “Yes” will be ok, but if you want to vote “NO” you must PRINT “NO” in the “NO” box.

WATSONS BAY PARKING ISSUES: SOME FACTS

Since 1975, just 6.6% of 'kerbside spaces' at Watsons Bay have been for residents only. (Woollahra Local Traffic Committee Report (LTC) August 16, 2023, p 12). And most parking spaces are available to visitors to spend all day at the beach – for free – as opposed to councils that charge $10 an hour up to $40 per day (Northern Beaches).

This arrangement has been an ideal compromise for visitors and residents – so much so, that other councils are keen to adopt the “Watsons Bay solution”, advised Mr Le Tran of Transport for NSW, at the LTC meeting.

And of recent m ajor interest, Waverley Council has proposed extending its Resident Parking Scheme in two areas. However, the Report proposes to change Watsons Bay’s untimed parking to mostly 2-hour. Unsurprisingly, this recommendation has evoked widespread opposition, including from State member Kellie Sloane MP, Federal member Allegra Spender MP, and nearly all Woollahra councillors as well as the police, who have concerns about the impact of increased

traffic on safety as well as upon emergency vehicle access.

A LOSE: LOSE SITUATION

If someone is lucky enough to get a 2-hour parking space, it often takes at least 20 minutes to unload and reload the family and walk to/from the beach. Under the proposal, everyone loses: visitors lose access to untimed parking and residents lose the small number of spaces allocated to them. Not all residents can obtain parking permits and there’s an annual renewal fee.

“It would be very hard for me,” lon g-time resident Irene Still emphasised. “I’m 80 years old and don’t have any off-street parking. Many houses in Watsons Bay are small and old timber fishermen’s cottages with no parking.”

“When we moved here over 50 years ago, no-one wanted to live here,” local Yvonne Messenger told Eastern Suburbs Life. “A lot of people have lived here as long as us; there’s at least eight people in my street above 70 and the majority don’t have parking.”

SIMILAR STORY SOUTH

A similar situation to Watsons Bay is South Coast’s Hyams Beach – also with one narrow road in and out. To manage congestion, Shoalhaven City Council placed a vehicle

limit as well as appointed traffic controllers, measures reported to have worked "very effectively".

Many want to k now why there isn’t more focus on public transport as a more viable option. There have been discussions on upgrading the ferry wharf, yet to be

finalised. Meanwhile, ferry queues stretch out hundreds of metres; visitors and locals alike are hoping for more sustainable solutions. At the latest council meeting, Woollahra Council agreed to obtain further legal advice on this issue.

The Windows of St Mark’s

(Part 2)

While the windows of St Mark’s are of individual historical and artistic interest, they may also be read as pointing collectively to the overall theological significance of the quadrangular space of the building, whereby all worshippers within it have a place in the biblical story of salvation.

The main windows in the four walls, arguably, lie on two axes: from west to east, the story of Jesus as Lord and Saviour from the Annunciation of his coming into the world to his Ascension from it into heaven; from south to north, the story of the people of God from the period of the Old Testament to that of the New Testament and beyond.

Three windows in the south wall depict Moses, David, and Isaiah, each in his own way pointing to Christ as the Messiah through whom our salvation is accomplished. These figures have white or almost white robes, in contrast to those of the four brightly coloured figures opposite in the north wall: two biblical saints, Peter and Paul, and two saints of the early church, Augustine of Canterbury and Aidan of Lindisfarne, specifically referencing England as the main background of the original congregation, introducers of Roman and Celtic Christianity, respectively.

The contrasti ng colours of the north and south groups seem to depict the Christian church as the fulfilment, the ‘colouring in’, of the pre-Christian people of God, as the story of salvation across created time. The colourful fourth south window, the Good Shepherd, presents Christ as fulfilment of the pervasive Old Testament prophecy of the Saviour.

In the east window at the front of the worship space, Christ ascends from

the crucifixion towards heaven, simultaneously suggesting a Christ in Majesty, already crowned and gazing at the congregation with his right hand raised to bless everyone before him, with a banner held above his head articulating his invitation, ‘Come unto me’.

Two substantial h istories of St Mark’s have been published, relating to the centenary of the church and its sesquicentenary, respectively. A third book currently in preparation will explore in detail the positioning of worshippers gathered in the worship space, with particular reference to the windows they will encounter, for all of which colour plates will be provided. In the meantime, the windows may be viewed in person when the church is open for services.

Walkabout with Ruth Potts Point (Part

1)

In this Ed 58, my walk takes me down Macleay St and Wylde St, Potts Point to Garden Island.

I begin my walk in Orwell St at the Metro Theatre. In 1937, David N. Martin, a theatrical publicity and advertising agent, formed a new theatre company named Minerva Centre Ltd to erect two live theatres on opposite sides of Macleay St, Potts Point. The site in front of the Minerva facing Macleay St was developed as the Minerva Cafe and Nightclub. In May 1941 it was leased by Whitehall

Theatrical Productions who staged their last show there in April 1950. Metro-GoldwynMayer purchased the building in 1950 and converted to a movie theatre, renaming it the Metro Cinema.

Harry M. Miller returned the venue to live theatre in 1969 with a production of the musical "Hair". In 1979 the building was converted to a market, then became offices for the Kennedy Miller film production company. In 2019, Kennedy Miller sold the building to the Abacus Group, amidst hopes it might again become a live theatre.

I head down to Hughes St to the Wayside Chapel, established 1964 by Ted Noffs. Within twelve months of his arrival, Noffs had tranformed it into a chapel, coffee shop dropin and community resource centre. A crisis centre was established in 1971 to handle crises which might arise at any time of day or night, including drug overdoses and possible suicides. In the late 1990s, Pastor Ray Richmond and others established a "tolerance room" where people who inject drugs were able to do so in a supervised environment, this eventually led to the creation of the legal Medically

in 1962. The Chevron went into receivership in 1961. Eventually a second tower was added. But 'The Silver Spade Room' was the key drawcard and the hotel was a popular haunt with celebrities. The Bee Gees stayed in the Louis XIV suite in 1971. The Rolling Stones stayed at the hotel in 1973 and Sir Robert Helpman patronised the hotel when he was in Sydney.

At No. 57-59 Macleay St, is Yellow House, built in 1897. In the 1950s it was an art gallery, and it displayed work by John Olsen, Robert Hughes and Robert Klippel among others before contemporary illustrator Martin Sharp inhabited the space in the early 1970s and began a collaborative artist’s movement called The Yellow House Artists Collective. Artists such as

Brett Whiteley, George Gittoes, Bruce Goold, Peter Weir, Philip Noyce, Albie Thoms, Aggie Read and more collaborated and displayed work here ranging from paintings to sculptures, films and interactive art projects.

Heading down Wylde St at Grantham St, there is a plaque commemorating the demolished residence 'Caleb Castle', 1880, which also commemorates Felix Caleb Wilson.

LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 22)

JUSTICE is the Tarot Card for Libra. This card features a Goddess with a pillar on both sides of her. The sword she holds is a symbol of truth with power and wisdom within.

The Goddess also hold s the scales which represents logic and unbiased decisions. She is one of balance. Her decisions are important and perfectly fair. She feels she must have everything perfectly correct in the terms of balance. The scales sometimes tip from left to right and sometimes vice-versa which often makes her feel overwhelmed. It is important for her to know that she is in charge of the gifts bestowed upon her. She must always judge by the rules. Venus is also given the ability to attract many friends as she is showered with extra charm.

SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21)

Heading back onto Macleay St at No. 81 is the IKON Apartments, which was once a stately home called Cairo. Developer Stanley Korman decided to build The Chevron Hotel on the site. The Chevron was planned in two stages, and dubbed “Sydney’s Glamour Hotel” opening to the public in 1960. The second stage of the hotel, an additional 21 floors, was due to be completed

Supervised Injecting Centre.

At No. 1-3 Manning St there is a heritage-listed residence called Tusculum, which was built between 1831-1837 by John Verge for businessman Alexander Brodie Spark. It was then let to influential cleric William Broughton, the first and only Anglican Bishop of Australia and later inaugural Bishop of Sydney, from 1836 to 1851.

Garden Island forms a major part of the RAN's Fleet Base East. It includes active dockyards (including the Captain Cook Graving Dock), naval wharves and a naval heritage and museum precinct. 'Bayinguwa’ is the First Nations name for a small island at the end of Woolloomooloo Bay. It was renamed Garden Island in 1788 after it was planted in the first months of European settlement in Australia, to serve as a kitchen-garden by officers and crew of the First Fleet vessel HMS Sirius. Initials carved into a sandstone rock on the site are believed to be the oldest colonial graffiti in Australia, comprising the letters "FM 1788," representing Frederick Meredith who served as Sirius' steward.

On Sept 7, 1811, ownersh ip of Garden Island was declared to have transferred to the Governor's estate with produce dedicated for the exclusive use of Government House. The transfer had practical effect but due to an administrative error it was not formally registered, leaving the land in the legal ownership of the Navy, which successfully sought its return in 1866.

Sandstone fortifications, built on the i sla nd during the 1820s to protect Sydney from a much-feared Russian attack, also survive. Garden Island also boasts what is claimed to be Australia's first lawn tennis court. Built in 1880, it is still in use.

There is a tunnel system unde r Garden Island that was once used by the Royal Australian Navy. Within this tunnel system was a power station, offices and air raid shelters. This tunnel complex also had a command centre. Other tunnels also exist which headed further in towards Kings Cross.

Philipa Veitch elected Mayor of Randwick

West Ward Councillor Philipa Veitch is the 86th Mayor of Randwick. Mayor Veitch was elected by her fellow Councillors at a meeting on Tues, Sept 26, 2023 taking over the Mayoral chains from outgoing Mayor Dylan Parker who completes his two-year Mayoral term.

Councillors also el ected Labor Councillor Alexandra Luxford as Deputy Mayor.

Mayor Veitch becomes the third Greens mayor and fourth female mayor in Randwick’s 164-year history.

Philipa and her family – husband Sim and sons Dante and Jules – have lived in Randwick City for nearly 20 years.

She said she was h umbled by the honour of being elected Mayor.

“I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for trusting this important position to me at this critical time in Council’s history.

“I’d also like to tha nk and acknowledge the outgoing Mayor and Deputy Mayor Councillor Parker and Councillor Pandolfini for their leadership. You have both contributed significantly to Randwick City and should be proud of your term in office,” she said.

Mayor Veitch was fi rst elected to Randwick Council in 2017 and served as Deputy Mayor from 2019-21.

She is a visual artis t and teacher and has delivered a range of arts programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art and to inmates at NSW Correctional Centres.

“I also want to focus on enhancing our arts and cultural opportunities within Randwick City. I’m passionate about the arts and want to provide more opportunities for live music, First Nations arts and culture, and spaces for visual and performing arts,” she said.

Mayor Veitch will se rve as Mayor until the Sept 2024 local government elections.

PACIFIC AIRSHOW GOLD COAST

For the first time ever, the Gold Coast hosted the Pacific Airshow in Aug 18-20, 2023, with spectacular air displays.

The show attracted up to 3 00,000 visitors and many die-hard air show enthusiasts from all over Australia. Weather was perfect, which made viewing and photographing the event fantastic. The event was so popular that the Gold Coast will now host the Airshow for the next four years, annually.

Being a passionate aviati on enthusiast, photographer and airplane modeller, I drove from Melb via Syd, stopped to pick up my partner, then drove the arduous Pacific Hwy to the Gold Coast to the event.

In March this year, I photographed the Avalon Airshow 2023 (Vic), for the Australia Overnight program, hosted by Tony Moclair on Radio Station 3AW (Melb). Incidentally, Tony will be the host and commentator of the Avalon Airshow in the future.

The inaugural Pacific Airshow, Gold Coast follows the success of the Pacific Airshow Huntington Beach, California. Both locations having similar features and the Airshow brought together two of the world’s closest partners, Australia and the USA.

Globemaster III of No.36 Squadron (Amberley); C-130J Hercules of No.37 Squadron (Richmond,NSW); The Westpac Helicopter Airbus Industries EC-145 also performed their life saving demonstration. Canada was rep resented with the demonstration of their multi-role Airbus CC-150 Polaris long-range jet aircraft for passenger, freight or medical transport and mid-air refuelling for the Royal Canadian Air Force. The USAF demonstrated a simulated air-to-air refuelling between a Boeing KC-135 and their own McDonell-Douglas/ Boeing C17 Globemaster III. MV-22 Osprey of the US Marines demonstrated it's capabilities and versatility.

Unfortunately, due to a training mishap a week or so later, three marines lost their lives, and five others were injured. This accident happened off Melville Island, NT. According to PAGC, the expected Pacific F-16 display team, the US Navy Leap Frogs parachute team and a USAF C-5M Super Galaxy withdrew from the show for operational reasons.

The Growth of Clinical Studies in Australia

A clinical trial is a research study in human (patient and non-patient) volunteers to answer specific health questions. Clinical trials involve the testing of new or existing medicines and/or medical devices or combinations to determine whether they are effective and safe for people to use for a particular disease/condition. The development of new medicines, devices or combinations of, may lead to the treatment or prevention of diseases/conditions and an improved quality of life.

Clinical stud ies, a lso known as clinical trials, play a crucial role in advancing medical research and healthcare in Australia, as they do worldwide.

Clinical trials typically p rogress through several phases:

PHASE 1: Initial testing in a small group (usually healthy volunteers) to assess safety to determine a safe dosing range and identify side effects.

PHASE 2: Further testi ng in a larger group who have the applicable disease, to evaluate effectiveness, right dose and any side effects in treating that disease.

PHASE 3: Large-scal e testing to evaluate if the new treatment is safe and effective for a wide variety of people. The trial usually involves assigning participants to the new treatment or a control group (placebo or an existing treatment) to further monitor effectiveness, safety and side effects.

PHASE 4: Post-marketing surveillance once the treatment is approved for widespread use.

Clinical trial s a re conducted at various research centres, hospitals, and clinics across Australia. These sites are equipped with the necessary facilities and trained medical professionals to conduct trials safely and efficiently.

In Sydney, NSW, Scienti a Clin ical Research is one of the leading Phase 1 facilities in the country. Based within the Bright Building on the Prince of Wales Hospital campus and immediately adjacent to the last stop of the new light rail, Scientia Clinical Research has been operating for seven years conducting a range of clinical trials for which they are always recruiting.

Clinical trials in Australia are subject to strict regulations and oversight by various regulatory bodies. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is responsible for regulating therapeutic goods, including medicines and medical devices, while the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) provides ethical guidelines and funding support for research.

SCULPTURE BY THE SEA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi will celebrate 25 years as the world’s largest, free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition when the exhibition returns to the 2km Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk on Oct 20, 2023.

Sculpture by the Sea, Bon di began in 1997 as a one-day exhibition run by volunteers working out of the Founding Director’s lounge room featuring works by 64 artists and attended by 25,000 visitors.

In 1998, Sculptu re by the Sea was commissioned to create five exhibitions around Australia for the Sydney Olympics Arts Festival ‘A Sea Change’, in Darwin, Noosa, Albany, the Tasman Peninsula and Bondi.

Now celebrating 25 years, Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi has been the world’s largest free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition for over two decades, exhibiting 2,691 sculptures by 1,129 artists from 51 countries. It is visited by up to half a million people each year. Most of Australia’s leading sculptors of the last 30 years have exhibited numerous times including May Barrie, Bert Flugelman AM, Inge King AM, Stephen King, Michael Le

Grand, Ron Robertson-Swann OAM, Michaelie Crawford & Julie Turpin, and Ken Unsworth AM.

The exhibitions inte rnational profile has resulted in some of the biggest international names in sculpture exhibiting, including: Sir Anthony Caro, Phillip King CBE (England), Sui Jian Guo, Chen Wen Ling (China), Kozo Nishino (Japan), Fletcher Benton (USA) and David Černý (Czech Republic).

This year’s exhibition includes 34 first time exhibitors alongside six artists who exhibited in the first one day only exhibition back in 1997: Paul Bacon, Stephen King, Michael Le Grand, John Petrie, James Rogers and Margarita Sampson. They are joined by acclaimed Chinese artist Chen Wenling, a dozen leading artists from Japan, as well as regular exhibitors Philip Spelman and Ron Gomboc who join the Double Decade Club, and Lucy Barker and Ayako Saito who join the Decade Club. In continuing the support for Ukrainian artists, Nazar Bilyk will exhibit at Bondi for the first time.

Bondi Theatre Company welcomes a Concert to celebrate the ages with all your old-time favourites from South Pacific, Tony Bennett and a few Italian surprises.

Some Enchanted Evening takes the audience on a theatrical journey brought to life by Simon Militano and Glenn Amer.

Simon has played the lead male role in many musicals such as Curly (Oklahoma), Emile De Becque (South Pacific), The Beast (Beauty And The Beast), Billy Bigelow (Carousel), Inspector Javert (Les Miserables), and Daddy Warbucks (Annie).

He has also performed on stage at Carnegie Hall, New York as the winner of an international voice competition for music released prior to the 1950’s. Some Enchanted Evening takes the audience on a journey of this theatrical voyage, which is his passion for the old time stars of Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jnr and song that celebrate his Italian Heritage. Hear musical songs from stage, the golden era of music from South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Show Boat, Carousel, Man Of La Mancha, The Sound Of Music, Phantom Of The Opera, The Rat Pack, Tony Bennett, and many more!

Simon's singing is a great com pli ment as the Finance Director of Opera Australia. He is able to combine his passion for numbers, music, the classic Broadway style musicals

and old style singers. He often remarks he was born in the wrong era.

Accompanying Simon is acclaimed Maestro Glenn Amer, who studied at Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School, and later at the Conservatorium itself. An invitation to London was accepted at the age of thirteen to participate in the studios of renowned accompanist, Geoffrey Parsons and voice teacher Erich Vietheer.

He is featured as a headline entertainer on all the major cruise lines. Touring with these companies has taken him all over the world many times, and extensively throughout Australia. Glenn was the youngest pianist in history to cut pianola rolls for the Mastertouch Piano Roll Company, and has made acoustic cylinder recordings for the Vulcan Cylinder Record Company in England.

His ABC Classics recording with the Seven Sopranos (featuring his arrangements, conducting and piano playing) debuted at number two. In January 2020, he was appointed Head of the Piano Faculty at Hume Conservatorium of Music.

Why Lyn is leaving the ultimate gift to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation

Lyn’s son Mark arrived at the Sutherland District Hospital south of Sydney in 1979. Her joy quickly turned to shock and concern when told that he was born with a potentially lethal combination of health problems.

Mark was born five weeks prematurely with the condition H-type Fistula affecting one in 375,000 children at that time. This condition means that food and liquid can make their way into the lungs resulting in serious and life-threatening respiratory conditions. Adding to an already complicated situation, baby Mark also had a harelip and cleft palate.

Shortly after Mark’s birth, he was transferred to the Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital (now Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick). At the time, baby Mark's future was uncertain – it was even suggested Lyn might want to baptise him. Lyn’s mother’s intuition held her back and she said, ‘No, I’ll have him baptised later’.

Mark had several major operations and spent 10 months of his little life in the Intensive Care Unit. The results were extraordinary - he could eat without a feeding tube and his harelip and cleft palate would also recover after surgery.

Mark not only went on to fully recover but is now married with two beautiful children of

his own and living in North Queensland. Lyn attributes Mark’s survival to the medical teams who worked so hard on this courageous little boy. Mark’s survival was a miracle.

This miracle has inspired Lyn to leave a gift in her Will to Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation (SCHF). ‘I’m a retired Mum. 1. THE HAPPIEST MAN ON EARTH by Eddie

Jaku OAM

A must read for anyone looking for a new perspective, this best-selling memoir by Holocaust survivor Eddie Jaku tells of the unimaginable horrors he faced in Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust –as well as the tragic loss of his entire family and friends. Eddie pays tribute to those who were murdered by telling his story, sharing his wisdom and living his best possible life. The story explores her many roles: as a governess, a waitress and a salon-owner in Melbourne, and how she went on to build one of the first completely global cosmetics corporations, catapulting her to international fame. Youth summit

New plans for Randwick town centre to go on exhibition

A plan to reinvigorate Randwick town centre and encourage new sustainable commercial, retail and residential development will soon be put on public exhibition for community comment. Councillors supported the plans which are designed to achieve a strong and economically viable commercial centre, new public domain and greater heritage protection. Proposed changes include modest height increases, changes to floor space ratios and an affordable housing levy.

Interactive Christmas tree planned for Coogee

A 6m tall LED Christmas tree could be installed at Coogee Beach this Christmas under plans currently being developed by Council. Councillors supported a Mayoral Minute to investigate a special LED interactive tree where people can design their own Christmas ornaments to display electronically on the tree along with their name.

We recently hel d our second Region 9 Eastern Suburbs Bus Passenger Forum as part of our Bus Industry Taskforce. I’d like to thank everybody who took the time to participate in this forum. It was great to hear firsthand what is currently lacking in our bus network, and how it can be improved to better cater for the needs of our community.

Unfortunately, the stories we heard were all too familiar. With bus routes being either redirected or slashed, it has caused a great deal of stress and confusion for residents and commuters.

To hear that elderl y m embers of our community have been left stranded at Prince of Wales Hospital and that children are regularly arriving late for school is simply unacceptable, which is why it is so important this Bus Industry Taskforce is made aware of these stories and experiences.

To ensure these valuable assets are preserved, we have drafted a Fig Tree Management Plan which proposes to increase building clearance pruning to 3m for all branches less than 150mm and also includes a detailed assessment of all Figs located on public land.

Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize exhibition

Finalist works for the 2023 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize are on display in a free exhibition at Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf from until Nov 5. The Prize is Australia’s pre-eminent award for small sculpture, with four categories including the main award of $25,000; a Special Commendation award of $2,000; the Mayor's Award of $1,000; and the Viewers’ Choice award of $1,000. The recent Youth Summit brought together 34 students from nine local schools. During the half-day session, these young leaders had the opportunity to address the Mayor, General Manager, council officers and teachers on issues that are important to them and their peers. The summit provided a platform for the diverse voices of our children and young residents to be heard. Waverley Council wanted to gain valuable insights into the issues that matter most to our children and young people and explore ways to integrate their perspectives into consultation and decision-making processes. They will be holding similar events in the future, and the outcomes of the summit will be used to plan a further programme of direct engagement between young people and Council.

Resident parking consultation

Waverley Council are currently consulting on a proposal to extend resident parking to some parts of North Bondi including Survey Area F (Wallis Pde and parts of Military Rd, Hastings Pde, and Wairoa Ave) and Survey Area G (Glenayr Ave, Oakley Rd, and O’Donnell St, north of Blair St, and west of Mitchell St). Knowing how frustrating it has become for residents in these areas to find a park near their homes, the view is that the introduction of a two-hour time limit for non-residents is a fair way to balance the demand for parking between residents and visitors to our neighbourhoods.

Council backs coordinated homelessness plans for extreme weather

Randwick Council is putting its support behind a national emergency management response for assisting people who are homeless during times of extreme heat or extreme cold. Council will work with relevant government and community agencies to develop the plan.

Accolades for boxing icon Kevin Kelly

Little Bay resident Kevin ‘Bones’ Kelly was formally inducted into the Australian Boxing Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Melbourne on Sept 2, 2023. During the 1990s and 2000s, Kevin won a range of state and national boxing titles. His record of 39 fights with 27 wins, 8 losses and 4 draws is commendable. Council resolved to recognise and celebrate his contribution to boxing and to publicly congratulate him.

Council secures longterm future of The Hub @ Lexo

A building in Lexington Place, South Maroubra has been purchased by Randwick Council providing certainty for the ongoing operation of The Hub @ Lexo. The property at 3-7 Lexington Place includes two shop fronts (including The Hub) and nine residential apartments. The acquisition provides certainty for the ongoing provision of important community services for residents including housing, counselling and health. rental housing stock to 38.

Buses a re essential for people young and old, and it was great to see so many older residents attend the forum. Buses allow our community to stay mobile, access crucial services and maintain social connections. It is clear that far too many individuals have been deprived of this, and for far too long.

There is stil l a lot of work to do, but the responses we have received from this recent forum have brought us one step closer to delivering a formal and in-depth report of the reality of privatisation on our bus network.
