It was a pagan festival dedicated to Lupercus the god of fertility, and far from celebrating romance, it involved the sacrifice of goats and a dog, was violent and bloody and involved random match making.

The name Lupercalia translates loosely to “Wolf Time” (Linking Lupus for Wolf and Calia for Calendar) and dates back to the time of Romulus & Remus, the founding twins of Rome who were suckled by a female wolf when their mother died in childbirth.

Double Bay Botanic Garden: A Colonial plan The visionary Governor Macquarie had plans for colonial Sydney that included the establishment of a Botanic Garden in Double Bay.

“I went by water this forenoon... to Double Bay” he recorded on 4 September 1821 “and there marked the future Botanic Garden, directing about twenty acres of ground to be reserved & located for that purpose.” (Lachlan Macquarie, Diary 11 March 1821 - 12 February 1822.)

This not only identified a site for the future garden but was also suggested as an addition to the older ‘Government garden’ at Farm Cove, which Macquarie had dedicated as a Botanic garden in 1816, now renowned as Sydney’s 30-hectare Royal Botanic Garden.

Charles Frazer was appointed the superintendent of this first Botanic Garden.

He is considered to have been the driving force behind the reservation of the Double Bay land; the rich alluvial soils and small watercourses were major contributing factors in this decision.

This also aligned with Macquarie’s aim of creating stability through agriculture and settlement. He was Australia's fifth governor

but when he arrived in Sydney in 1810, he discovered the NSW colony was in anarchy.

Within a year, he had steered the colony forward on the road to stability and economic independence.

BOTANIC TURNS EXOTIC

The Double Bay reserved area was re-surveyed in the 1830s and became a crown land release, designated as ‘The Village of Double Bay’.

Supported by local natural vegetation, the foreshores and adjoining land teemed with wildlife; within a few decades the alluvial flats supported substantial market gardens and several nurseries. Of particular renown was Guilfoyle’s Exotic Nursery, located in a small portion of the original reserved area, coinciding with Macquarie’s earlier vision.

Guilfoyle Avenue is a drained swamp and was the central part of this site, tended by one of the nation's early gardening families who operated this nursery from 1851 to 1874 on 3.5 acres (1.4 hectares).

FRIENDS OF DOUBLE BAY MEN'S TABLE: When News Limited ceased printing 112 local community papers in May 2020 it was a major blow to many sections of the community. Classified advertising disappeared, street festivals lost sponsors and locals could no longer find local news all in one place.

As CITAP* says, “Local news outlets play an important role in informing community members about local government, elections, and other civic events. They also help to shape community views around common values and beliefs, creating a sense of shared purpose that can be a powerful uniting force within a town or suburb.”

Eastern Suburbs Life can’t turn back the social media tide, but it can seek to recreate local community publishing on a suburb by suburb basis using a mix of Hard Copy and Online services.

We’ve started the process in the Double Bay Area by: • Running regular social nights so that people can meet each other again.

• Creating the Friends of Double Bay Facebook Group for people to share information.

• Creating the Double Bay Area News Facebook Page to publish curated news.

• Publishing a Double Bay Area community directory to help people find each other.

• Creating a Friends of Double Bay Membership website to help members work together.

• Pioneering collaborative projects to make it easier to people to work together as a group.

• Creating a Community Publishing Platform that professionals can use to publish news.

• Creating a Double Bay Area classifieds section in the Eastern Suburbs Life local paper.

• Working with local businesses and community groups to share curated news and events.

• Starting work on a Friends of Double Bay website to provide a home for all the above.

BUILDING MEANINGFUL MALE FRIENDSHIPS & CONNECTIONS

Men's Table is a grassroots community organisation that invites men to connect and talk over a simple meal once a month. The first Men’s Table (MT1) began in 2011 with 12 men who have met once a month for dinner ever since. Now, it helps more men build meaningful male friendships and connections by creating safe places to share, overcoming the stigma that “men don’t talk”.

“It’s not a facilitated group, local men run it themselves,” says Regional Host, Anthony Garnham. “But it’s designed in such a way to encourage men to go beyond the banter and open up in a different way to pub talk or golf club chat.”

Himself a member of a Table in Randwick, Anthony is keen to let other local men know about Tables in the Eastern Suburbs. “Men sit at Tables for so many reasons. Some want to be in a community of peers or give back, others might be suffering loss, financial stress, family issues, personal struggles. Some are just new to an area and want to build a social circle. Whatever the case, navigating the ups and downs of life can be tough to do alone or without someone you can share the load with,” he explains. “It’s about sharing the highs and lows of your lives, and just having those different types of conversations that are really helpful for the

men but then also helpful for the broader community.”

The Men’s Table currently have established Tables in Bondi Junction, Paddington, Surry Hills, Randwick and Coogee that are looking for new members, or are always open to men who want to start their own local Table.

Loneliness and social isolation is a growing issue and recognised as a public health priority in many countries. Male suicide has long been a cause for concern, with 75% of all suicides in Australia being boys and men, and traditional masculine norms such as being stoic and self-reliant are not helpful or healthy for men or their families. With Tables in every State and Territory, the Men’s Table are building on their motto ‘Healthy Men, Healthy Masculinities, Healthy Communities’ with every group of local men they meet.

“At the end of the day we’re trying to build healthier communities by connecting people together,” Anthony says. “By meeting once a month for dinner and a chat with the same group of guys, friendship and support grows. Some men can find it hard to communicate with their peers. In this environment they know what they say is confidential, they won’t be judged and they can be heard. WEDDINGS AT ST MARK’S PART 1

REFLECTIONS FROM REVEREND MICHAEL FIGUEIRA, ASSISTANT MINISTER “One of the great delights as a minister is marrying couples. St Mark’s Anglican Church Darling Point is a beautiful church with a rich history and an established reputation of celebrating marriages with great joy and reverence. A key part of my role is to prepare the couple not only for the wedding day, but for a lifetime in their marriage together. One way we do this is through our pre-marriage courses where couples meet over a few weeks and intentionally connect and communicate in their relationship together. Strong marriages don’t just happen automatically. We hope that couples will discover the attitudes, values and habits needed to build a healthy and strong marriage for a lifetime. Couples report that they have found these courses enormously beneficial in helping them to understand each other and their relationship better. They appreciate the time to slow down and invest in each other, in the midst of the busyness of preparing for their wedding.

In the months leading up to their wedding, I often meet up with the couples to get to know them a little bit and to hear their story. We complete some legal paperwork and some of the finer details for their wedding service such as the Bible

readings, hymns and prayers are worked out. In this meeting I highlight the significance and meaning of their marriage. Since St Mark’s is an Anglican church, the couple will be married under the rites of the Anglican Church of Australia. So, I highlight the three important undertakings that their marriage will entail. Firstly, that marriage is a lifelong commitment. Secondly, it is marked by loyalty to each other and is an exclusive relationship. Thirdly, it is to be marked by love, the same model that God has for his people, a self-giving and sacrificial love. We spend some time thinking through the significance of their vows and the rich promises that they will make towards one another.

Finally, I offer myself to support them on this lifechanging adventure. It can be quite a stressful time organising a wedding, there are so many details to consider and decisions to make. So, I encourage couples to be kind to one another and to enjoy this journey. I pray for them, that God would strengthen and guide them in their relationship together and with him. It is an enormous privilege to play such a significant role in the lives of these couples.”

Hyperacusis is a rare hearing disorder where sounds others perceive as normal seem uncomfortably – and often unbearably – loud.

• Sudden exposure to loud noise: Some people with hyperacusis develop it after hearing a sudden, loud noise, like a gunshot or fireworks.

Extremely sensitive hearing may be a symptom of a medical condition (e.g., Addison’s disease, Lyme disease, Bell’s palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome, Wiliiams syndrome). Still, there isn’t a single cause that explains all cases of hyperacusis, and hyperacusis can be associated with multiple contributing factors and conditions.

Hyperacusis often accompanies conditions like tinnitus (up to 86% of people) and Williams syndrome (as many as 90% of people). Nearly half of the people diagnosed with hyperacusis also have a behavioural health condition, like anxiety.

Contributing auditory factors can include: • Long-term exposure to loud noises: Hyperacusis is more common in people exposed to loud music for long periods, like rock musicians, or who work in loud settings, like construction workers.

Under new management – Is your child a leader?

The new year has arrived and with it the start of the school year!

As children anxiously ponder the end of their summer days and parents start the process of wondering what to pack for school lunches and how to juggle the extra curricula, and the school events here is your reality check. Give some of your worry and those tasks back to your children!

All children thrive in a warm and supportive environment where they feel respected, accepted, and capable. Our children all need opportunities to experience leadership, and this should not be left to chance that some person will confer it on them or be confined to opportunities provided by their school. We all can give our children opportunities in their daily lives to experience and develop their leadership capability.

Leadership opportunities provide children with five key benefits: 1. A sense of empowerment providing children with control over their environment and the outcomes produced.

2. Development of resilience through taking risks and sometimes experiencing failure.

3. Develops problem solving skills as not every opportunity has a clear pathway to follow.

4. Teaches life skills of planning, conflict resolution, delegation (sometimes back to you!).

5. Assist in the development of autonomy.

Children by the age of nine are starting to develop their self-autonomy and it is essential for the development of a competent, and confident adult that this occurs.

How we structure our weekly routines and engage our children in undertaking these responsibilities can support the development of leadership skills AND reduce some of our own burden. Knowing where to start is the key to developing your child skills, so here we go!

Reflect and write down a list of all the things you need to do for a smooth running week.

Record everything from prepping uniforms, making lunches, putting rubbish out, maintaining the shopping list, even setting alarms. Plan for every part of the week! Then pick yourself up off the floor after realising why you are so tired, and start the negotiation…

Talk with each of your children about what tasks they would like to undertake and be responsible for. By talking with your child, you can receive insight into what they are feeling confident to try and empower them to have a say in the tasks and routines needing to be done. Family is a partnership, whether it is just you and your child, or you and eight more!

Let them do it! If your child agrees to undertake a task it is important to let them to do it. The hardest part is not interceding or correcting but letting them experience the satisfaction of completion, the pain of failure and the consequences when a task is not done. Gentle reminders and asking them if they need advice when they appear frustrated, is your role.

Review every week by planning a family mealtime over which you share and discuss what was achieved and the challenges.

Make changes as needed or give additional guidance. Use this time to work out how to do it better next week! Like any great team effort, it takes work and practice, so keep your

In this Edition 62, I walk down Bourke St, from Darlinghurst to Surry Hills.

The work operates on several levels, increasing safety as a positive legacy of the assault, creating a poignant tribute to all women who have experienced violence, and also acting as a sign of resilience and hope, lighting the way forward for equal rights for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

I begin my walk at one of Sydney's iconic venues, Kinselas. The Chapel, with its high and ornate art deco ceilings, is a tribute to the building's history as a funeral parlour. It was the headquarters of Charles Kinsela, undertaker, from 1933 until 1982; at which time it was converted into a restaurant that boasted the names Tony Bilson and Tetsuya Wakuda. Kinselas now is a bar.

Just behind Taylor Square, curving around the intersection of Bourke and Campbell streets, the bright installation (2013) was timed for Mardi Gras and is a symbolic statement of support for the LGBTQI+ community. San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the first rainbow flag in 1978. While the current version has 6 stripes – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet – the original flag also featured pink and turquoise.

The assassination of San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk in Nov 1978 saw demand for the flag boom. The pink stripe was dropped due to problems in the manufacturing process. In 1979 San Francisco dropped the turquoise strip, which led to the version seen today.

Across the Rainbow Crossing are the Belgenny Apartments, built in 1937, a ten-storey block consisting of 81 apartments and example of Inter-War Art Deco architecture.

At 348A Bourke St is the Wesley Edward Eagar Centre, once The Bourke Street Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1847, by John Bibb. In 1978, the chapel was redeveloped to become a congregation, residential facility and support service for men and women experiencing homelessness in Sydney. In 2020, Wesley Edward Eagar Lodge closed its doors to undertake a major upgrade, and in 2021, the building reopened as the Wesley Edward Eagar Centre.

Just walking up from Wesley Edward Eagar Centre is a lane way called Mary Place. There is a community project called Lamp for Mary by Mikala Dwyer. It is the result to commemorate a violent act and takes the form of a large glowing pink street lamp, together with accompanying text.

Heading down Bourke St is the St Margaret's Hospital Precinct, once St Margaret's Maternity Hospital, which opened in 1894.

The hospital was founded by Gertrude Abbott (1836-1934), the foundress of an unofficial religious community, reportedly out of the experience of a poor, pregnant girl being brought to her in 1893 by a local policeman. The following year she opened the hospital, initially located on Elizabeth St in Strawberry Hills, as the St Margaret's Maternity Home. It was founded "to provide shelter and care for unmarried girls of the comparatively respectable class".

From Mar to Dec 1894 Abbott admitted nine married and 23 unmarried patients. In 1904, the hospital offered general gynecological services, and started an out-patients dept. In 1910 the hospital moved to its final location at 435 Bourke St, Darlinghurst. With the assistance of the members of her small community, she administered the hospital until 1924. At the time of her death at the hospital in 1934, St Margaret's was the third largest maternity hospital in Sydney. It treated 760 mothers that year, without any maternal deaths. In 1937, at her request, the hospital was taken over by the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

From 1961 to 1988, the hospital was a teaching hospital in obstetrics and gynecology with the University of Sydney. From 1988 until its closure in 1998 it was affiliated with the University of NSW.The site of St Margaret's underwent a redevelopment into high density housing in 2004.

Further along Albion St, Surry Hills at No 207 is Durham Hall, built 1834-35. It is also known as Concordia Club, Booker T. Washington Club and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.

The property is owned and occupied by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.

The Colonial Georgian brick residence was constructed for George Hill, a wealthy merchant. The house has had many owners and has had varied uses including a club. Over the years it was subjected to very unsympathetic alterations and additions.

By the 1950s the building was almost unrecognisable. However, in 1983 major renovations were done to the house and many of the unsuitable additions were removed.

TREE CANOPY AND VEGETATION COVER TO INCREASE Waverley Council is welcoming 2024 with a new Greening and Cooling Strategy that outlines 26 targeted actions to increase canopy, shrubs and greenspace in Waverley to 35% by 2032.

Actions the Council will take so that Waverley is more than one-third covered in canopy and vegetation cover include planting 500 street trees and 40 park trees each year, the Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos said.

The strategy also focuses on fostering protection of trees on private land, activating community stewardship and better compliance and reporting.

“As global and local temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, Council’s ability to protect and enhance greening on both public and private land is critical to managing an effective local response to the Climate and Biodiversity Emergency,” Mayor Masselos said.

“Protecting and preserving our natural assets is crucial for any organisation that is serious about addressing climate change, and Waverley Council is at the forefront of this fight,” Mayor Masselos said.

Trees, shrubs and groundcovers provide multiple public benefits, including cooling through shade and evapotranspiration, biodiversity habitat and food, improved air quality and absorption of carbon, rainfall and stormwater.

Protecting, restoring and repairing trees and vegetation in Waverley will reduce the need for air conditioning, and increase local amenity by encouraging walking and physical activity through our green spaces and village centres.

“Ensuring Waverley is “nature positive” — a term that refers to when species and ecosystems are being restored and regenerated rather than diminished — will help us enhance regional climate resilience, and ensure healthy, naturally cool neighbourhoods into the future,” Mayor Masselos said.

“Despite being just 10 kms from the CBD, Waverley’s parks, coastline and beaches support Distinct native plant communities that provide homes for more than 50 native animals species, and this strategy will support our local biodiversity to thrive.

The 2023 Greening and Cooling Strategy, which supports Council's climate resilience goals, received overwhelming support from the community during development phase and was endorsed by Council in Dec. It was developed with support from the NSW Government’s Greener Neighbourhoods grant program.

In 2021, Waverley Council became one of the first organisations in Australia to adopt a target of net zero carbon emissions by 2030 for its organisation. In 2022, it adopted a net zero target by 2035 for the whole Waverley community.

In Aug last year, the Council launched a Net Zero Alliance to support these targets.

Founding members Sydney Roosters, Waverley College, St Catherine’s School, Sydney and the Bondi & Districts Chamber of Commerce will work with the Council and each other to help make sustainability second nature within their own networks to benefit the Waverley community and Sydney’s east at large.

Despite local challenges to growing and maintaining canopy in Waverley (sandy coastal soil; high density; high private land ownership), the Council has managed to increase vegetation cover since 2005 by successfully managing trees in our streets and parks, however, there has been significant loss of trees and green space on private land.

"For this reason, our new strategy outlines actions to help protect vegetation and deep soil on private land, and to galvanise community stewardship for greening initiatives and to safeguard the trees and vegetation that we have.”

SUSTAINABILITY SHIFT: Transforming the textile & footwear industries post-China dominance In the last four decades, the global textile and footwear industries have undergone a significant transformation, influenced by China's dominance and subsequent impact on the market.

However, with growing concerns about sustainability, a new chapter is unfolding, and reshaping the way these industries operate, paving the way for ecofriendly practices.

China's influence on the footwear market approx. 38 years ago, emerged as a major player in the marketplace, when they flooded the world with affordable synthetic shoes.

This significantly altered the dymanics of the industry, leading to concerns about environmental impact on the earth due to the non-biodegradable materials like plastic synthetic webbing and P.U.

THE SUSTAINABLITY MOVEMENT

The footwear industry is in the process of onshoring worldwide back to their own countries to open manufacturing, bringing back the original shoemaking

techniques that were taken away by the Chinese onslaught.

Countries like UK, Portugal, Spain and Brazil are all heading back to old manufacturing techniques,finding old machinery and cleaning it up and training people to use their hands and be productive.

Brazil lately passed an agreement in Parliament, to produce all natural products, and other countries may follow suit.

CONCLUSION

The transformation of the worldwide textile and footwear industries, catalysed by China's impact 38 years ago, is now evolving toward a sustainable future, as consumers prioritise eco-friendly products. The challenge lies ahead maintaining this momentum and striking the right balance for a sustainable planet and making a positive impact.

FLiCKERFEST CLOSING NIGHT Jan 28, 2024 marked the 33 anniversary of the FLiCKERFEST journey from Balmain to Bondi, a journey of 13kms, just 1km less than the City to Surf. Both events are recognised worldwide.

the Closing Night ceremony honoured the esteemed entrants in this year’s competition and FLiCKERFEST’s Academy® Qualifying Awards, including the Flickerfest Award for Best International Short Film, Yoram Gross Award for Best International Animation, Panasonic LUMIX Award for Best Australian Short Film & Flickerfest Award for Best Documentary.

Festival organiser Bronwyn Kidd was delighted with the event that screened 200 short films from a record number of 3,400 entries and said : -

Awards were given in the following categories; International Competition, International Documentary Competition, Rainbow LGBTQI Competition, EU in Australia Awards, Jury Special Mentions and Australian Competition Awards. Winners in the last category were: -

LOCALS HONOURED IN 2024 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

Eight individuals and community groups from across Randwick City were recognised as part of Randwick City Council’s prestigious Community Service Awards.

The recipients include people who have volunteered their lives in fields such as netball, Scouts and the environment; as well as community groups who have connected people at risk of social isolation and provided emotional support for mothers.

Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch commended all the award recipients.

“Thank you to all of you for being a part of – and for helping to create – such a rich, diverse, and beautiful community.

“These outstanding community members and groups have dedicated countless hours and tireless energy to improving the lives of the people around them and Randwick City.

“Some of them have overcome great challenges – and all have shown great leadership, hard work, and compassion – to

give back and make our community a better place,” Mayor Veitch said.

JENNY MORRISSEY

Australia Day Community Service Award For more than 40 years Jenny has contributed to the wider netball community as a volunteer and developed programs for male participation, pathways for First Nations players and skills programs for young players.

MUM FOR MUM

Australia Day Community Service Group Award This program is run by 220 trained volunteers who work directly with local mothers providing in-home emotional support during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first year of the baby's life. The group directly impacts and improves the lives of vulnerable and at-risk community members.

NOAH HOCKEY

Australia Day Community Service Youth Award

Noah stepped in as a leader following the retirement of a Cub leader and the sad passing of another leader at the 1st Little Bay Scout Group. Under Noah’s guidance, he took the children on a day camp, rock climbing and inspired and motivated a passion for the outdoors and helping the local community.

AARON LOWMAN

Australia Day Community Achievement Award for a Person with a Disability Aaron is a sportsman and dedicated volunteer working with six organisations including St Canice’s Kitchen which supports homeless and other vulnerable people. He raises money for charities including Cerebral Palsy Alliance and Legacy, is a passionate bush educator and has won gold, silver and bronze in the Special Olympics.

LYNDA NEWNAM Mayor’s Award

For more than 20 years Lynda has volunteered for the Randwick community and beyond fighting for the environment, citizens’ rights and social justice. She has been involved in Precincts, Coastcare and Citizen Science Partnership. Lynda is committed to strong and ongoing advocacy around environmental pollution and contamination affecting Botany Bay from industry and developments. Her valuable contribution supports the protection, maintenance, and restoration of fragile ecosystems for us and future generations.

Special commendation awards were also presented to Kensington Park Local Residents Seniors Group, Nehal Nafcy for his work building connections at UNSW and Tsz Yung Chu, JP (Kevin) for his volunteer JP work at Lionel Bowen Library and the Junction Neighbourhood Centre.

ANTI-LITTERING MURAL MAKES A SPLASH AT GORDONS BAY

A vibrant new mural at Gordons Bay in Sydney’s east is capturing the attention of pedestrians and reminding people of the harmful effects of litter on the local marine environment.

The mural, which has been painted on a small pump station, is located on the popular Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walkway, at the north end of Gordons Bay near Clovelly car park. It features paintings of the famous local blue groper 'Bluey' on the front and a large blue octopus on the back, both swimming among litter.

Construction has begun on a new pocket park, located on the corner of Clovelly Rd and Carrington Rd in Randwick.

The pocket park will replace an existing median island and slipway.

Following consultations with the local users of the area, the pocket park and plaza was designed to include: • Increased trees and greenery across the intersection.

• A multipurpose deck area that can function as a versatile community space.

• Seating encouraging passers-by to stop, enjoy a morning coffee and connect with nature.

• Strategic timed parking to ensure easy access to local businesses.

• Pleasant night-time decorative lighting.

• Greater separation between pedestrians and cars to increase safety.

Randwick City Council Mayor Philipa Veitch praised the design of the pocket park.

“With extra greenery and room for pedestrians, there will be even more to love about Clovelly Road,” she said.

“The new pocket park is set to be a communal gathering space with a village atmosphere, and is a wonderful addition to Randwick north.”

A new pocket park at the intersection of Clovelly and Carrington Roads was identified as one of seven key priority projects in the Clovelly Road Precinct Streetscape Masterplan. The plan was adopted by Randwick City Council in 2020 following extensive consultation with key stakeholders and the local community, as well as detailed site analysis.

The pocket park is scheduled to be completed by the middle of 2024, weather permitting.

“Gordons Bay is part of a precious aquatic reserve that stretches across 4,000 metres of coastline from Coogee to Bronte,” Randwick City Council Mayor Philipa Veitch said. “It is home to a rich biodiversity of marine vegetation and fish, including the much-loved blue groper, Bluey.

“Millions of people from all over the world visit this area every year, whether to walk the Coogee to Bondi coastal path, or swim or snorkel in Gordons Bay or neighbouring Clovelly. The beauty of this unique environment is dependent on everyone who passes through it.

“The mural was commissioned to remind people to do their part for the environment and take their rubbish with them or bin it. Council has installed waste and recycling bins at both ends of Gordons

Bay to make this easier,” Mayor Veitch said.

Sydney mural artist Nico Nicoson, who completed the artwork this week after six days of work, said: “I wanted the mural to be a visual language and its message accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures.”

Nico said the mural had already sparked conversations with passers-by. “A lot of people including children came up and asked me about it while I was painting,” he said. “I love that children are engaging with it.

“It’s opening opportunities to talk about the impact that litter has on the ocean, fish and other wildlife – a conversation that many people may not otherwise have.”

Mayor Veitch said: “Nico has done an amazing job to turn what was a heavily graffitied pump station into a colourful and attractive piece of art that people of all ages can enjoy and learn from.

“The mural will be a memorable and long-lasting contribution to Council’s ongoing work to protect our beautiful coastline and ocean life.”

Funded by the NSW Environment Protection Authority, the mural is a part of a Randwick City Council project aimed at reducing litter at Gordons Bay and Yarra Bay.

Malabar Pool to get new pump and maintenance boost

Maintenance of Malabar’s popular ocean pool will ramp up this year, starting with critical repairs of the pool’s pump,The pump, which circulates ocean water in and out of the pool to ensure it stays fresh and full, was damaged. Malabar Pool is cleaned fortnightly.

“One of the challenges with maintaining a mechanical pump is the harsh marine environment. Plus accessing the underwater pump to undertake maintenance or replacement is dependent on tide and swell conditions.

In addition Council will also install new signage providing information about cleaning and maintenance schedules at the pool.

Air conditioner restrictions to keep the cool with neighbours

Randwick City Council is reminding residents to be mindful of the noise impact air conditioners may have on neighbours.

In accordance with NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulations, noise from the use of air conditioners should not be heard by neighbours in a ‘habitable room’: Before 7am and after 10pm on weekdays, and before 8am and after 10pm on weekends and public holidays.

A ‘habitable room’ is any room other than a garage, storage area, bathroom, laundry, toilet or pantry.

If you cannot get a satisfactory outcome from this, then please consider reporting unwanted neighbourhood noise by contacting Randwick Council on 1300 722 542.

Maroubra Beach masterplan progresses

A plan for the future of Maroubra Beach will be put out to community consultation in the coming months. The plan, as endorsed by Council for feedback, proposes a range of second option proposes a $6.75m knock-down rebuild with a new building connecting the different functions, also doubling the female toilets and providing more storage for Lifeguards and Coogee Surf Club.

Grants for community groups

Eighteen community groups will be given cash and inkind support totalling almost $90,000 as part of Council’s latest round of funding for its Community Investment Program artwork project at Matraville Sports High.
