KINGS CROSS
What
"LET'S GET LOCAL"
Sunday, July 23, 1916 marked the start of the battle of Pozières in northern France. It was a brutal six week battle with over 23,000 casualties, just 5,000 less than at the battle of Gallipoli which is now honoured annually on Anzac Day. Mateship had always existed in the harsh “land of drought and flooding rains” but the first World War cemented it firmly into the Australian psyche.
Sunday, July 23, 20 23 mar ked the 107th anniversary of the battle of Pozières and was honoured, as every year, at St Columba Uniting Church on Ocean St, Woollahra. The service brought together soldiers of many ranks as well as civilians of all ages and walks of life from Federal MP to children under 5 years old. All played their part and made their contribution, even if was just to sing hymns.
It showed the best of how communities can work together and support each other and how each of the players feel rewarded for what they contribute. It is a natural thing for a church to organise community events, and is made easier by the fact that within the congregation many people already know each other.
However, on a larg er scale collaboration is more difficult to achieve. You can hardly walk up to someone in the street and say “Would you like to collaborate?” First you need to know a little about them and that they are open to the idea of collaborating. So to help with that we have created www.ourbigdirectory.org
There you ca n find businesses and organisations to collaborate with and also sign up your own organisation if you wish.
This is a directory of bus inesses and organisations within 12 geographic areas in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. Membership is $95 per six months. We provide help to get you started.
We are also creating FREE open Collaborative Facebook Groups for each of the 12 areas starting with the Double Bay area. Search “Double Bay Area Collaborative” in Facebook.
These groups are free for indi viduals representing businesses, charities, schools, local community groups, sporting clubs, local councils, state government bodies and federal government bodies, plus individuals who wish to participate in empowering local communities.
We expect many of the mem bers to be small business owners as they employ over 4.7 million people and 41% of the business workforce, making them Australia’s biggest employer. In addition, 75% of small business owners donate an average of 6% (a bigger percentage than large companies) of their profits to charitable organisations annually. In fact they are the ‘engine room’ of the economy and the heart of our community and without their support we could not bring you this paper, its digital cousin, or Eastern Suburbs Collaborative. Throughout the paper yo u’ll fin d local businesses, local charities, community groups and collaborative activities. We thank them all and urge our readers to use their services and get involved wherever they can.
We also extend a b ig thank you to our readers and hope you enjoy the tail end of winter and the anticipation of spring.

The Battle of Pozières Remembered
Uniting Heart and Soul Church Woollahra is the home to one of the Battle of Pozières crosses gifted to the congregation after the great war. They have remembered the fallen ever since in a remembrance service of the Battle of Pozières between July 23 –Sept 3, 1916 in northern France around the village of Pozières during the Battle of the Somme.
Although the six- week battle for Pozières was a success, with allied forces taking over the town, however, victory came at a very high cost of some 23,000 Anzac casualties, it was a figure comparable to the 28,000 suffered during the eight months spent fighting in Gallipoli—such massive loss. Pozières was indeed a b loody battle with tens of thousands of casualties in a matter of weeks. Both sides of the battle endured heavy artillery fire with machine guns, tanks, rifles, pistols, and grenades. One digger reported, "Pozières has been a terrible sight all day.” But what distinguished Pozières and Mouquet Farm from other battles fought on the Somme in WWI was not only the scale of the losses sustained over a short period but the scale of the bombardment that Australian and British troops were subjected to throughout the six weeks of the deadly campaign.
You see, shellfire and artillery were so continuous and so severe that those who survived not only suffered from the trauma of horrific physical injuries but also from what would later be described as ‘shell shock’ or, as we say today, post-traumatic stress. An observer, E. J. Rule, described the men of the 1st Division after this battle: “They looked like men who had been in hell… drawn and haggard and so dazed that they appeared to be walking in a dream, and their eyes looked glassy and starey.” Such massive trauma.
On Sun, July 23, Uniting Heart and Soul Church Woollahra welcomed many honoured guests to the 107th Commemoration Service; Federal Member for Wentworth, Allegra Spender, Major General the Honourable Paul Brereton AM, RFD, SC Colonel Commandant of The Royal NSW Regiment presided at the occasion. Along with Lieutenant Colonel Ben Biddington, Commanding Officer 1/19RNSWR, Chaplain Simon Gellert 1/19 RNSWR read prayers. WO1Thomas Gibson A/Regimental Sergeant Major 1/19RNSWR, WO2 Stephen Johnson, who played the Bugle for the Last Post.

YOUR LASTING GIFT TO HELP SICK KIDS
We all understand the incredible importance of giving. Perhaps you or someone close to you has experienced the need for medical care during childhood. As we reflect on what truly matters to us, many of us feel a deep desire to pay it forward and make a lasting difference.
Giving comes in various forms, from buying a raffle ticket, making a donation or attending a charity gala. And if you enjoy pounding the pavement, you might join a charity walk or fun run.
But for some, the most generous and extraordinary gift comes in the form of a gift in their Will.
Every year, over 170,000 kids are cared for by the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. The need for support is ever-growing, and your contribution, even just 1% of your Will, can become part of a transformative movement that brings hope, healing, and brighter futures to countless children. Imagine the incredible achievements we can reach if hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of people join this movement, united by their commitment to making a difference.
At Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation (SCHF), we know that including a charity in your Will is a very personal decision. It is an important and lasting declaration of your values and beliefs that you and your loved
ones can be proud of for a long time to come.
It may su rprise you to learn that over 50% of Australians don't have a Will. Without one, their assets will be divided according to a legal formula that may not reflect their true wishes. Our hope is that individuals make the most significant gift they will ever give by including SCHF in their Will. By leaving a gift
in your Will, even as little as 1%, you are supporting the lives of children who aren't even born yet, leaving a profound legacy of care and opportunity that will help make great healthcare, extraordinary healthcare. And you becom e part of a movement that brings hope, healing, and brighter futures to countless children. Your legacy will live on, providing the care and support that those who
need it most deserve. Together, let's transform the lives of sick kids, one gift at a time.
If you would like to l earn more about leaving a gift in your Will, please contact our Planned Giving Team, on 1800 770 122 or plannedgiving@schf.org.au

SHOP LOCAL AND ONLINE
Local Eastern Suburbs Sydney stores can now provide shoppers with their favourite produce online through a newly launched platform, toGET.com.au The platform provides local businesses with an immediate e-commerce capability and local shoppers with the convenience of shopping for an aggregated offer of their local best quality products and artisan grocery items online - in a single transaction.
“ to GET i s a p latform that offers local businesses selling vegetables, fruit, bread, patisseries, fish, meat, and even giftware, with a collective e-commerce platform where shoppers can provision their households easily, locally and online,” explained Cindi Shaw, Director and Founder.
“We founded to GET o n the belief that we should all be buying local to support our local shops, villages and communities, Cindi explained. Many shoppers now want to support their local shops and purchase artisan food from purveyors in their local area. We now make it even more convenient.”
“We provide residents with online access to their local shops offering artisan bread, butchery, organic vegetables and related consumer goods from local boutiques. It’s a win-win because the platform provides locals with convenient access to purchase from their favourite shops online, while for local businesses, they can access an e-commerce platform
The Minerva T heatre opened its “Art Deco Streamline Moderne” style doors to a stunning 1,000 seat theatre in 1939 and immediately became a cultural entertainment hub, contributing to Kings Cross growing reputation of modern and cosmopolitan living. With surrounding cafes, restaurants, saloons, cabaret shows and theatre productions it was the place to be see.
Today, the Metro-Minerva Theatre Action Group is campaigning to have this iconic architectural masterpiece re-opened as a theatre. Those who treasure local history and wish to help can find out more by visiting www.metrominerva.com
Mine rva Wise Cut Gin (45%ABV RRP $59) has chamomile and sage. In traditional medicine these evoke wisdom, and combined with other gin botanicals, have resulted in a delicate juniper perfume, efflorescent citrus and sweet vanilla undertones, with a refreshing finish of Native Australian Rivermint. Just perfect for fresh G&Ts or Martinis.
Minerva Warrior Strength Gin (59%ABV RRP$79) has lemon thyme and fennel, that in traditional medicine evoke courage.
Combined with classic gin botanicals, these result in an elegant juniper aroma, a complex bouquet of citrus and warming spice. Magnificent in a negroni or a bold G&T.
As Khare Aoun, Director of Kings Cross Distillery says "The Minerva Gins not only offer a tantalising taste experience but also serves as an artful addition to any collection. The bottle is a work of art, a celebration of Potts Point’s vibrant cultural heritage."
Odelia Potts, Gin Architect and Head Distiller adds "We are delighted to
introduce the Minerva Gins, a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. We’ve drawn inspiration from the goddess Minerva, and paid tribute to the history of the Minerva Theatre, and meticulously crafted two gins, that embody courage and wisdom, and the celebration of local Kings Cross history."

“We are making local sh opping even more convenient - whether you’re a grocer, florist, butcher, baker, or candlestick maker - we bring all your local speciality stores online in one transaction, for click and collect or home delivery.
“We know that shopper s are now purchasing items online that they usually purchased in-store, (in fact, online grocery shopping has increased by more than 25%) and we also know that local shoppers prefer to purchase selected grocery items from their local stores because they are trusted, high quality and desired brands.
to GET is meeting this need by giving local shops an e-commerce system, and joint marketing opportunities, to survive in a highly competitive market.”
“Local businesses are the innovators and fabric of our communities,” Cindi added.
“Developing e-co m merce platforms for many of these businesses is an expensive and daunting exercise. With to GET, a local business has access to an instant online platform that showcases their produce to local shoppers and integrates into their payment system, helping them embrace and grow in new digital era and ensuring

The Magic of Music Time
Every Monday morning during term time, the happy sounds of adults and children singing and playing can be heard at St Mark’s Anglican Church Darling Point. The group meets at 9.30am in the Howard Lea Hall and more details can be found at https://stmarksdp.org/ministries/kids/
Music Time Convenor, Claire Fern, shares her experiences with us…
“With a baby and too much free time on my hands during the day while my other kids were at school, I began thinking last year about the shape of my week with a baby in tow. Music classes and playgroups were my go-to when my other boys were small. Restarting Music Time post-Covid seemed an obvious and useful way to share some Monday morning joy with parents from our church and the wider community.
I'm a Primary School teacher and a mum to four boys, the eldest being nearly nine years old. I'm also a swimming teacher and a leader of Joeys (little Scouts). Needless to say, children are where my passion lies! I love making connections with mums in all stages of motherhood, dads taking the helm for a period of time, and carers who are invested in the
upbringing of their charges such that they'll sing their hearts out and play with puppets. In a typical session, we have half an hour of chatting while the kids play with toys, enjoy a cup of tea and a piece of fruit or cake. Then it's half an hou r of sensory music time - songs with actions, or props, or percussion instruments. We sing a range of familiar nursery rhymes and new kids' songs, which I've collected over many years of being involved with children's activities.
It has been really joyful to see the children respond so positively to our sensory materials, and as they get older and more familiar with Music Time, to join in more and more of the songs and actions. When I pull out certain props, they get so excited with the anticipation of the song! It's also great to see some of the parents forming friendships that take us outside of the Monday session and onto weekend or weekday outings together.”

HOPE AFTER HURT Support for those who have experienced domestic or family violence
Banksia Women are a not-for-profit program, established by St John's Community Services, based in Darlinghurst. They provide connection and long term support to women who have experienced domestic and family violence.
A brave survivor, Sara* recently shared her story in order to provide hope to those who find themselves in a similar situation, and highlight the help available through Banksia Women.
“I met him in 2004. It was, first love. At one point we got into a fight and we were talking on the terrace of our building, and he pushed me on the stairs and I fell down. I was in shock, like, ‘What did just happen?’ He apologized ‘It was just by mistake’. And at that point, you just believe that. You want to believe it’s true. I was truly madly in love with him, but he made me constantly think that whatever I am doing is not enough. He had that anger. He would not express it, but he would just take it out on me.
Someone from my workplace got an idea that I was going through something. So she spoke to me about it and I called 1800 RESPECT. They gave me the number of a women’s shelter. About a year later one of
my colleagues introduced me to Banksia Women. It has been so much help. Since the day I joined I have grown exponentially. Understanding my situation, what is acceptable, what is not. And to see ‘I’m not alone in this.’ I think that was the biggest thing that helped me to not feel ashamed about my situation. There were a group of women who were of different ages, ethnicities, backgrounds. It can happen to anybody. It’s not just me.
I am still vulnerable. Yes, I have gone through a lot. I have accepted everything about myself and that has just made me so happy. Now I don't feel ashamed because it was not my fault.”
Escaping a situation of domestic abuse requires a huge amount of courage and commitment from women, but it is just the beginning of their journey of recovery. What happens in the following weeks, months and years is critical. Support is available. Banksia Women offer a range of services, run by qualified female practitioners, specifically designed for women who have experienced domestic or family violence.

When attending concerts, working in noisy environments, or engaging in activities like shooting, mowing the lawn, using power tools, or riding motorcycles wear hearing protection such as earplugs or earmuffs to protect your ears and prevent permanent hearing loss.
LIMIT VOLUME LEVELS OF PERSONAL AUDIO DEVICES
When using personal audio devices, such as smartphones, be mindful of the volume settings. The World Health Organization recommends keeping the volume below 60% of the maximum level and limiting listening sessions to no more than 60 minutes at a time (WHO, 2022).
TAKE BREAKS FROM NOISY ENVIRONMENTS
If you frequently find yourself in loud environments, such as construction sites, try to take regular breaks in quieter areas. Giving your ears intermittent periods of rest can help reduce the risk of long-term damage (WHO, 2022)
MAINTAIN EAR HEALTH
Get prompt audiological attention for hearing issues. Avoid using cotton swabs or other objects to remove ear wax that can push the ear wax further into the ear canal
and result in serious injury and hearing loss. Early detection of any hearing issues can lead to timely intervention, preventing further damage or complications. Your audiologist can also provide guidance on hearing protection and offer personalized advice based on your specific needs.
STAY ACTIVE AND EAT A HEALTHY DIET
Regular exercise and a balanced diet can contribute to overall well-being, including hearing health. Engaging in physical activity improves blood circulation to the ears, while a nutrient-rich diet promotes the health of the delicate structures responsible for hearing.

Walkabout with Ruth Kings Cross
I begin my walk at the Coca-Cola sign at the top of William St. The Coca-Cola sign arrived in 1974 and created an unmistakable landmark, one that defined the area that quickly became known as ‘The Gateway to the Cross’. It is the largest billboard in the Southern Hemisphere at 41 metres long and 13 metres high, the sign is comprised of two sides. Pieces of the original sign were auctioned off on eBay with proceeds going to the Wayside Chapel.
In 2017, Iris Capital lodged a development application to demolish the block of buildings at 18-32 Darlinghurst Rd, which included not only the Empire Hotel/former Les Girls building but also the equally iconic Bourbon Hotel – formerly the site of the Bourbon and Beefsteak – as part of a planned $47 million apartment block development. This led to some objections from locals, community groups and heritage activists, including protests and a petition on Change.org that gathered 12,000 signatures. The DA was ultimately withdrawn, with new planning controls put in place to help protect the building’s history. The site of the Empire Hotel has now been listed for its social significance as the former Les Girls nightclub, but the planning controls will allow the building to be replaced provided its history is interpreted.

LEO (July 23 - Aug 23)
Heading down Darlinghurst Rd, Kings Cross, there are plaques inserted in the pavement depicting old shops, stores, events and interesting characters that lived in 'The Cross' in the past. 'The Cross' was Sydney's bohemian heartland from the early decades of the 20th century with Illegal trading of 'sly grog' led by rival brothel owners, Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh. It was also home to a number of artists, including writers, poets and journalists such as Kenneth Slessor, Christopher Brennan, Hal Porter, George Sprod and Dame Mary Gilmore, entrepreneur Mayfield B. Anthony, actors including Peter Finch and Chips Rafferty, and painters Sir William Dobell and Rosaleen Norton.
Further along Darlinghurst Rd is the former Bourbon & Beefsteak, latterly The Bourbon. Opened in October 1967 by Bernie Houghton with a 24-hour licence. In 1999 it gained national attention after Australian cricket player Ricky Ponting was involved in a fight outside the pub. In 2019 it was sold for mixed-use development. Recently, the Kingsley Hall building and the
facade of the Bourbon building were approved for heritage listing.
Fitzroy Gardens was originally part of the 1841 subdivision of Colonial Secretary Alexander Macleay’s 54 acre Elizabeth Bay Estate. The first stage of the park was the site of Osterley at 62 Macleay St, which was built in the 1870s and demolished in 1927. It was resumed and landscaped in 1939 and was originally to be named after Civic Reform Alderman Ernest Tresidder, but political considerations intervened and the name was changed to Fitzroy Gardens after the Fitzroy ward of the City of Sydney, originally from NSW Governor Sir Charles FitzRoy (1846-1855).
THE STRENGTH CARD is the Tarot Card for Leo. This card has an Angel patting a Lion. It indicates you have the ability to face life and change any difficult circumstances. You are blessed with inner strength and courage. It also says if you are com mitted to someone or something you have the courage to face your inner fears and sort out whatever the problems may be.
Leo is a strong star sign, and in many cases Leos have their own businesses or may have management positions or work alone. Leos can move in many different directions and can deal with any difficulties they have to face.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22)
During the Second World War, bars, strip clubs and late-night venues sprang up along Darlinghurst Rd to entertain servicemen stationed at nearby Garden Island. From the 1960s onwards Kings Cross also came to serve as both the city's main tourist accommodation and entertainment mecca, as well as its red-light district. Hundreds of American servicemen on R & R leave flocked to the area
each week in search of entertainment. Organised crime and police corruption were well entrenched in the area.
On the corner of Darlinghurst Rd and Roslyn St is the Les Girls building, now known as the Empire Hotel. From 1963 until 1993 the building was home to the legendary Les Girls "drag queen" show, starring Carlotta. Throughout the 1990s the building, still retaining its original 1960s features, became the home to alternative cabaret, including the much-loved Sunday nightclub The Tender Trap. In1993, Les Girls hit the road, travelling Australia and taking the show to new audiences across the nation, many of whom would have never before experienced live drag performances. The road tour went on to inspire 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'.
The El Alamein Fountain is located in the gardens and was commissioned as a memorial to soldiers who died in 1942 during World War II in two battles at El Alamein, Egypt. It was designed in 1961 by the New Zealand-born architect Robert Woodward. Its dandelion design, which has since been copied for fountains around the world, was Woodward's original design.
There is also a sculpture called "Angled Wheels of Fortune" which was created by sculptor, Dennis Wolanski, gifted to the City of Sydney by an unknown donor and unveiled on April 26, 1988...
And a bust of Maurice Bernard Houghton (1920-2000) who was a US businessman with links to the US intelligence community, including involvement in the CIA-connected Sydney, Australia-based Nugan Hand Bank in the 1970s. He settled in Sydney in 1967, and founded several bars in Kings Cross becoming a significant enough local figure.
THE HERMIT is the Tarot Card for Virgo. This card shows a hooded figure holding a long staff in his left hand and a lantern in his right hand. On the lantern is a shining golden star. This star indicates wisdom shining within although outward appearances don't seem that way.
Virgo is also the s ign of a loner who guides others along the way. The Hermit is forever questioning and analising. He is a diplomat and expects alot from himself, always playing by the rules and paying attention to detail. He survives difficulties in a strong way and knows how to reap the benefits from his growth but he must try not to get too caught up in others problems.

THREE STRIKES FOR MERITON’S LITTLE BAY COVE DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL
Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker has welcomed the NSW Government’s decision not to include Meriton’s Little Bay Cove rezoning proposal in its fast-track Rezoning Pathways Program.
Under the program introduced by the previous State Government in Dec 2022, a developer could apply for a rezoning proposal to be ‘fast-tracked’ if they created over 1,000 new dwellings.
Meriton’s inclusion in the program would have resulted in Randwick Council being cut out from assessing the proposal.
The recent refusal by the NSW Government means that Meriton has now been knocked back for a third time in its attempt to change the planning rules that applied to the Little Bay site when it was purchased.
Randwick Council previously refused a planning proposal from Meriton in 2020 for approximately 1900 dwellings. A rezoning review was also rejected unanimously by the independent Sydney Eastern Planning Panel in 2021.
While there is currently no proposal in the planning system that Council is aware of, Meriton retains the right to lodge a new application if it so wishes. Council would then be obliged to assess any future proposal on its merits.
“Our community has always been willing to accept reasonable
development including at this site but each of Meriton’s proposals have been so over-the-top that they could not possibly have been accepted on their merits. I’m not just saying this, two expert assessments and the Department of Planning have confirmed it,” said Mayor Dylan Parker.
The 12.3-hectare site, known as Little Bay Cove, was purchased by Meriton in March 2018 and came with already completed public infrastructure and an approved masterplan for around 450 dwellings in buildings 2-5 storeys high.
“After three failed attempts, Meriton should get on with the job and build to the sensible masterplan that applied when they bought in and can be completed right now. The roads, playgrounds and footpaths are already there.”
“Sydney desperately needs new housing now and Meriton dragging out the process any further with new proposals will likely only lead to additional delay and community angst.”
Separately, since 2021 a total of 843 new dwellings have been approved in the Randwick LGA (Housing based on ABS monthly data). In addition, approximately 2,600 new boarding house and student accommodation rooms have been approved since Jan 2021 within the LGA. This housing is predominately located along the light rail corridor with access to employment, education and transport.
“Randwick City Council is proud to celebrate the great sportsmanship and skill of local community members,” said Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker.
“This year’s Awards feature updated eligibility criteria, ensuring that the focus remains on celebrating the local sportspeople of Randwick City.”

LACK OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN WAVERLEY
From Lightning Ridge to Bondi Beach
Edmond and Giovanna Lahoud, are key fixtures in Australia’s opal and gemstone scene. They touch ever y facet of the industry from opal mining and jewellery manufacture to wholesaling and retailing gems and minerals both nationally and internationally. They also own Bondi Beach Opals, Fossils and Minerals, so when you buy there you’re buying directly from the Opal fields, and getting competitive prices and the benefit of generations of expertise in opal jewellery. You’ll also find fascinating artefacts, fossils and minerals.
I remember driving down road and seeing Bondi Beach for the first time, and even though I had attended many interviews to advance my real estate career all over Sydney, Bondi Beach imprinted a special place in my heart and I knew it would be a place that would change my life, and many peoples lives that I met through property in the future.
Bondi Beach represents beauty, youth, life all the things you can see with the eye but there is a much deeper layers of lifestyle opportunity, wealth creation and life changing sale results.
Development in Bondi Beach and it's return values is widely known. It's almost those who have invested in Bondi always will that the astute cash in. For me, I was always excited to see individuals climb the property ladder, from renovating strata properties from being a Bondi bachelor, to finding a partner, having their first child and their second and so one. Or seeing single professional building their portfolio of property, renovating to increase the rent and values and equity over time to accumulating a number of apartments.
While I know I am not alone in say ing that Bondi is where most people between ages 20-39, it seems as though most of my friends, clients and families have had to make the move to more affordable areas which reflects in the ownership percentage of owners being around 36% verses the 64% that rent (census data) to live in the popular area. The medium rents for houses in Waverley are around $1600 per week and units are around the $800 and of those who own in general work in a professional.
Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos has now called for a Mayors’ roundtable with NSW Premier Chris Minns as a forum to factor in both local challenges and wider infrastructural issues - and help provide solutions. She says that she applauds the the Premier’s goal to increase affordable housing stock and it’s a goal many local councils share, including Waverley Council, and that the forum can really help make practical, in perpetuity solutions a reality.
On 15 June, Premi er Minns officially announced a range of incentives for large
private developments containing at least 15% affordable housing, homes typically offered at 20-25% below the market rate for 15 years, often managed by not-for-profits.
It's no surpri se that Waverley council voted to address a lack of affordable housing in the eastern suburbs and of course being a high in demand area like Bondi Beach. It seems it would be impossible and costly for the council to secure sites with Waverley Council being remaining one of the most unaffordable markets in NSW.
In general. Waverley has not been able purchase affordable housing since 2016. My expertise can come in to play by assisting them with identifying suitable properties on and off market within there desired budget. For those living in st rata, applying for a renovation may no longer be a simple process, which was bidding by the strata laws, because Design & Building Practioners Regulation reforms will soon apply. But that’s a story for another day.
As for you those that are l ucky enough to own a property and are in anguish as to whether they should stay sell or renovate it, I'd warmly welcome you to talk to me.
As they say, “We bring Li ghtning Ridge to Bondi Beach, and very piece of opal bought here, and taken home is a little piece of Australia, and Australia’s history.” And a long history it is. It is estimated that it takes 5 million to 6 million years for a 1cm opal to mature, and every opal has its own “finger print” and is totally unique.
However, but for chance, Bondi Beach Opals might not have come into existence. Edmond’s father was a jeweller, but his business was in Sydney, 8 hours drive from Lightning Ridge (and that’s on todays roads) and opal was not his trade. Edmond worked
alongside his father to learn the jewellery trade, but it was only when he ventured out on his own to manufacture jewellery for other jewellers, that fate introduced him to a man with a shoebox of rough boulder opal. “It was so beautiful” says Edmond, “that I was absolutely mesmerised and fell in love with the stone.”
He started making opal jewellery and when supplies of opal became scarce he moved to Lightning Ridge and partnered with established locals to secure the stones he needed. The end result was that he became a miner himself, working with pick and shovel to wrest the prized materials he wanted from the ground.
The rest, as they say, is h isto ry. Edmond and his wife Giovanna, now run Bondi Beach Opals, Fossils and Minerals, as well as, a sponsor for the Australian Opal Centre a project to promote opal, create job opportunities and generate tourism for Lightning Ridge. The area that led to the founding of Bondi Beach Opals, Fossils and Minerals.

DISSONANCE OR IS IT DISCORDANCE IN OUR MEDIA
Definition: Dissonance “A baby crying, a person screaming and an alarm going off are all common examples of dissonance. These sounds are annoying, disruptive or put a listener on edge”.
Dissonance appears within statements of questionable logic often confidently uttered as a protection against contradiction.
Some fifty years ago to my s hame, overhearing my recently bereaved mother and Auntie Joyce discuss an intractable international situation, I interjected with a simple catastrophic solution, without missing a beat, Auntie Joyce replied “how wonderful to have the simple perspective of youth!” I left the room shortly after that having exhausted my store of logic.
A well known academi c a nd public intellectual, Jordan Peterson, tells a story of students contradicting themselves up to seven times within one essay, entirely unaware of their shallow perspective. Either way the absence of logi c or consistency in a proposition, report or idea jars in our mind because it does not have logical consistency. It then becomes a frustration against any sense we have of order or the way things should be. It frustrates and gives rise to anger. This is dissonance. We subject ourselves to this
pain by obsessively watching graphic news videos unaware that we may be traumatising ourselves.
Rolf Dobelli in his excell ent little book “Stop reading the news; A Manifesto for a Calmer and Wiser Life” talks of his addiction to news of all types, even to the point of hiding in the toilet to read magazines so he could avoid having to talk to his wife and children, happily he recognised his behaviour and took positive action on his addictive behaviour.
On April 15, 2013 d uring the running of the Boston Marathon, a bomb exploded. It became a major media event. Being the US after all, psychologists and researchers alike came to measure the effects of trauma and media exposure.
I found the research of Holman, Garfin and Cohen-Silver “Media’s Role in Broadcasting Acute Stress Following the Boston Marathon Bombings”. Published Dec 2013 most interesting. Quoting from the abstract: “The authors conclude that repeatedly engaging with trauma-related media content for several hours daily shortly after collective trauma may prolong acute stress experience and promote substantial stress-related symptoms”. Also reported was that Boston residents suffered less PTSD effects than New York citizens nearly 400 kms north of Boston. In New York the
appetite for news was greater and they moved on six weeks earlier than New York news consumers.
We are reminded of how we endured in the last few years daily reporting on the ravages attributed to Covid 19, with terms such as “shelter in place, isolate, vaccinate so we don't spread the virus”, a term subsequently shown to be false. This was followed by media silence on the ills, depression, untreated cancer and excess deaths that society now has. This perhaps is an example of dissonant government policy and media reporting, this is when a policy that jars and makes us feel like we are hearing fingernails scratching on the old school blackboards. Again dissonance!
This is not a new pheno menon, 2700 years ago an irascible jewish prophet complained about the situation in the public square, (their version of social media) claiming to speak the words of God he said: “ So justice is driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter. Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey” Isaiah 59:14-15). From where comes this desire of the majority to pile on the alternate view?
Science and scientists apparently are not immune; being able to remember the 1970’s I recall the confident predictions of Scotland being in permafrost by the year 2000? Is it science or is it ideology?
I convene a s mall group of counsellors on Saturday mornings once a month. A multi-doctoral person spoke of the urgency to get on board the climate change train, so we have something left to bequeath to our children and grandchildren. Perhaps a little mischievously I added to the equation “Poverty in Africa”. There I proposed the quickest solution to poverty, hunger and mass migration out of there, would be to bequeath the Africans extensive electricity networks and coal fired power stations. That is the solution of choice in India and China. Again dissonance, irritation and annoyance to one side of the other.
If we add the happy new s that recently there has been a huge leap in women's swimming results bridging the gap between women’s swimming norms and that of men. Is that a pleasing advance in women's capability or is it something else? Dissonance anyone?

Kids Giving Back: Ways to volunteer and support Mental Health
In today's fast-paced world, teaching children the importance of giving back and supporting their communities is crucial. Kids Giving Back, a local organisation, has been at the forefront of empowering young minds through volunteering. With programs tailored for children aged 5-18, we foster empathy, kindness and our programs also provide mental health benefits for young volunteers.
Plus we also facilitate family weekend programs, enabling families to volunteer together and strengthen their bond while making a difference in their community. We love hosting corporate programs which promote team building and community engagement. These programs offer the unique opportunity for both adults and children to volunteer side by side, creating a shared sense of purpose and accomplishment.
Volunteering offe rs numerous mental health benefits for kids. Engaging in acts of kindness and service promotes a sense of fulfillment, boosts self-esteem, and reduces stress and anxiety. Research has shown that children who volunteer regularly develop increased empathy, improved social skills, and a greater sense of purpose. By participating in our programs, children not only make a
positive impact on others but also experience personal growth and well-being.
One of the most exciting ways to support Kids Giving Back is through our annual Wildwalk Event, taking place on Sept 10, 2023 at Bundeena National Park. Wildwalk is a fun-d-raising event designed to get participants moving, motivated, and connected while helping us raise funds to expand our programs for kids across the country.
This year, the funds raised from the Wildwalk will directly contribute to the growth and reach of our programs, allowing us to support even more children and recipients in need throughout NSW.
What makes the Wildwalk even more special is that every dollar raised holds a triple value and impact. You not only contribute to feeding and assisting vulnerable individuals directly, but you also teach children the values of kindness and service through action. This combination fosters social cohesion and empathy, ultimately creating a better world for future generations.
Kids Giving Ba ck invites the local community to be a part of this remarkable journey. By participating in our programs and joining us for the Wildwalk, you can

Monthly community markets could be held in Randwick City under a Council program to trial a site in 2024. Councillors resolved to support the program as part of Council’s Economic Development Strategy and will now seek Expressions of Interest from market operators to run the markets. Council will also consult with the community on two short-listed locations for the markets –either Heffron Park car park off Fitzgerald Ave or Broadarrow Reserve at Maroubra Beach. The consultation will commence soon via Council’s Your Say Randwick website.
Heffron Netball Centre to get more shade and seating
Construction on new undercover seating and all-weather shaded netball courts at Maroubra’s Heffron Park will commence shortly after Council signed off on the construction tender. Netball is one of the highest participation team sports in Randwick City and the Randwick Netball Association currently has 341 teams who use the courts.
Green light for Malabar Ocean Pool Amenities plan
An amenities building will be built to serve users of the Malabar Ocean Pool in the 2024/25 financial year after Councillors gave the concept plans the thumbs up following community consultation. The amenities building will include toilets, change cubicles and landscaping and will be built in the pool car park. The building has been carefully designed to be as small as possible, blend in with the environment and have minimal impact on views from nearby properties.
More basketball courts to be built
Council will look into building more half and full outdoor basketball courts across Randwick City after a passionate plea to the Council by a local young person. Addressing the Council meeting, 13-yearold Max from Clovelly said basketball is a good way to stay fit and healthy and strengthens community ties. Council will now audit the existing basketball courts, create a listing of available courts on its website, explore installing additional courts in each Ward and ensure existing courts have appropriate line markings.
Referendums represent a unique opportunity for Australians to actively shape the future of our nation. Later this year, we will have the chance to constitutionally recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the First Australians and establish a Voice to Parliament into our constitution.
The Voice represents the Labor Government’s commitment towards implementing the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full. It will act as an independent and permanent advisory body to the Australian Government on matters that affect the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Members will be chosen by local communities across Australia and work alongside pre-existing organisations to make recommendations towards the development of new laws and policies.
This will be a momentous and significant point in our nation’s history. Choosing to vote yes in the Voice referendum means recognising 65,000 thousand years of Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander history, culture and tradition. It means involving Indigenous people in the decision-making process, so that governments can make better decisions towards improving Indigenous health, education, employment and housing. By establishing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice we can end ineffective policies, deliver concrete solutions, and support better outcomes for everyone. There has never been a better time to bring our nation closer together and deliver a better tomorrow.
It is so important that we have reliable sources of information and engage in thorough discussion before we head to the polls later this year. I look forward to taking this big step towards reconciliation with you all soon!
