A good sense of balance is vital Lay a metre wide plank on the floor and ask people to walk the length of it and they will, without hesitation. Take the same plank placed securely between ladders, and 1.5 metres above the ground and they will say “no way”. The risk of it going wrong is no different, but the downside is now much higher. People do not like risks they can’t control. Caution is built into our genes and frequently defies logic. In just a few weeks it will be six months since the Covid-19 lockdown started in NSW and one thing it’s shown us is that our instinctive reactions often betray us. Steering into a skid is what brings the car under control, but it’s a tactic we have to learn. So what have we learned since lockdown started? Well, many things, and as usual they’re both good and bad. We’ve learned to be more neighbourly and cooperative. “We’re all in this together” is now a regular catchphrase, one we hardly ever heard before the start of lockdown, and we’re inspired by how many people have pitched in to feed and help the needy. We get phone calls and texts from people who haven’t been in touch for years, asking how we are and saying “keep safe”. And we are more in touch with our neighbours (working from home has certainly helped with that). On the other hand, we’ve learned that Federation is flawed and that states have used our instinctive fear of risks to frighten us into behaving irrationally, dividing us

and turning Australia in multiple “countries”. Instead of turning into the skid we’ve lost control of the car.

And our extreme focus on solving the Covid-19 health problem has shuttered our thinking about the other problems that need to be addressed if we are to get safely back to “normal”. Increased suicides, business closures, loss of trade, domestic abuse and lost months of education are all showing that the cure is now doing more harm than the illness. Compassion is a two edged sword. To win the fight against Covid our leaders have sacrificed the freedoms and livelihoods of those who run and work in businesses and community bodies. It is now time to rebalance and turn the cheek of compassion to them. For without them we won’t have the resources needed to continue to fight Covid. This edition is a tribute to the Eastern Suburbs businesses that have soldiered on during the pandemic, from the Yarra Bay Sailing Club in the south east, to Arnold’s Potts Point Vintage, Bondi Surf Club in the east, You and I Removals, operating from Redfern. Big or small these are businesses and community bodies that have continued to trade despite the hurdles that COVID-19 has caused. In between are Beds Australia, who sell only Australian made beds and boast an upgraded showroom; Edgecliff Hearing, who talk about implantable hearing aids, The Bolted Post Menswear in Rose Bay, who are about to receive spring stock, and Edgecliff Automotive celebrating classic cars that they service.

From the mountains of Katoomba to the streets of Sydney! Arnold Kieldgaard is known for having a penchant for fashionable and classical pieces.

As a young kid, Arnold dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player. But life has it’s own twists and turns. Today, you won’t see him in running in the field, but rather you would see him gracing his vintage store. It all started when he was travelling in Argentina and came across a tailoring shop that also happened to be a family residence. There, he became good friends with the owner and decided that someday he would also his own shop and live in there too! Back then, Arnold didn’t know what shop was going to be. His background as a tax auditor gave him the experience and discipline to start his own business venture. But ultimately, it was his affair for unique and elegant items that started Potts Point Vintage. "In Potts Point, it’s different to other places in that people like to express themselves in a different way. They do that through their wardrobe, and that’s where I come in." Arnold’s keen eyes for pieces with character and story has turned his shop into a haven for anyone looking for rare, fashioned pieces. There are tons of cool and funky styles to choose from! Potts Point Vintage offers originality - an excellent selling point especially in an era dominated by mass production. "I do wish Sydney was a bit more of a vintage town like Melbourne, the Blue Mountains, and Southern Highlands. It would be nice if Sydney embraced the vintage more, but we’re getting there." However, with the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting almost all businesses, Arnold has also lost two of his major clients: the film industry and tourists. But despite all that, he remains optimistic thanks to the support from the locals.

How to survive lockdown The lockdowns that have occurred due to recent events have been very challenging especially for small business.

Juniper Hall, Paddington Home to the Moran Arts Foundation Collection A focal point on Oxford Street, opposite the Paddington Town Hall, the Post Office and The Reservoir, is Juniper Hall. A grand old house – it is thought to be Australia's oldest surviving suburban villa.

Restored to its former glory by current owners, the Moran family, it is now home to the Moran Prizes which showcase portrait and photographic exhibitions on the ground floor. Interestingly, the Moran family are direct descendants of Juniper Hall’s original builders and owners Robert and Sarah Cooper, through matriarch Greta Moran. As well as an architect, builder and London publican, Robert Cooper (1776-1857) was also a gin distiller – hence the home being named after the juniper berry used in the distillation of gin. Built around 1823-26, Juniper Hall included eight rooms, a large cellar, veranda and balcony in addition to stables, kitchen, laundry and servants’ quarters. Large enough to cope with his 12 children (believed to have increased to 26 with his third wife, Sarah May, by the time of his death), Cooper’s two-storey home was built in the Georgian style on the top of the ridge line; at the time, this allowed the home to showcase views across Sydney Harbour to Botany Bay to the south. In 1831, Cooper left Australia with his wife and children for England and let the house to John Kinchela, an Irish lawyer who had arrived to

Ormond House in 1895 - City of Sydney Archives take up the post of the colony’s AttorneyGeneral, recommended by his Irish patron, the Marquis of Ormonde. To honour his patron, Kinchela renamed the house "Ormonde Hall" but stayed only until 1838, when the returned Cooper family moved back in. Shortly after, the ‘e’ was dropped and the adjacent street named Ormond Street. In 1849, having over-speculated, Cooper was declared bankrupt and forced to leave his house. The building then played a significant institutional role, with uses including a private school for girls, a children’s home and it was the first Children’s Court in New South Wales.” Community groups such as the Paddington Society were very active in campaigning for the conservation of Juniper Hall. civic duty, culminating in 1860, in him reluctantly becoming the first President of the Legislative Council for the new State of Queensland.

Living in the Eastern Suburbs, including owning Lindesay at Darling Point from 1845-1849, Nicholson was a foundation Trustee of St Mark’s Church and Parsonage from 1847. As an active Christian, he worked with notables such as Thomas Mort in shaping the emerging nation at many levels. He was noted for his gentle manner and fine sense of tolerance.

SIR CHARLES NICHOLSON

Charles Nicholson was the original ‘quiet achiever’ of early Sydney. He was born in Yorkshire in 1808, and arrived in Sydney in 1833 on the encouragement of his wealthy uncle. This was perhaps because, despite qualifying brilliantly in medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Nicholson wished to cover a dark secret.

He is perhaps best remembered for joining with WC Wentworth in agitating for a university for Sydney and then being a member of its original senate, becoming the first chancellor from 1854 to 1862. He remained a fellow of the senate until 1883, even after repatriating to England in 1862.

As a physician he was readily accepted into Sydney society and quickly made a name for himself practising as an obstetrician. Also proficient as a businessman, Nicholson inherited substantial property and wealth when his uncle died in 1840.

Fortunately for Sydney, on a three year excursion overseas from 1857, he personally built a fine collection of Egyptian and other antiquities, which he donated as the foundation collection of Sydney University’s world-renowned Nicholson Museum.

Even before his inheritance, Nicholson applied his considerable talents to many civic activities and was recognised as a fine humanitarian with strong religious and political views. He was very active in the governance and administration of public institutions including the Australian Gaslight Co (AGL today), the Savings Bank and the Australian Museum.

On his return to the colonies, he was created a baronet in 1859 and helped establish Queensland as a separate state. From 1862, he repatriated to England and was an active consultant on Australian affairs in London until his death in 1903.

In 1843, he became the member for Port Phillip on the newly formed Legislative Council; being Speaker from 1846 to 1856. This was the forerunner of a life of

Josh from Edgecliff Automotive recommends that you treat your car's air-conditioning as a critical item. The hoses need lubricating, gas needs to be replaced due to loss, and the pipe joints need to be kept moist. He suggests that regularly turning it on will circulate the lubricant that is in the refrigerant. As with any expensive asset, keeping your air-conditioning unit maintained retains the value of your car. Your air-conditioning in your car obeys the laws of thermodynamics: Cold is the absence of heat. You remove the heat from a system and you have cold; energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change location. It is imperative that trained technicians work on your air-conditioning. You should not attempt to do it yourself. Our technicians are trained by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) and licenced to handle the volatile gases and complex procedure. 1960 Renault Floride

Firstly, just what is a classic car and why do people still love them? According to petralicious.com the lines and shapes that give the elegance and the beautiful body of loved classic cars was not designed on a computer, but with a pencil, paper and by drawings that reflected the prevailing moods and trends of the time. Production now could be said to replicate, with an eye always on meeting the target and quotas and shareholders requirements, rather than deliver unique and lasting style. The general global definition of a classic car is 20 years old. To be classic and worth preserving is another distinction – these are “fine” “distinctive” and “worth restoring;” and they must remain much as they were originally designed. Classic Automobile Clubs often have their own definitions, ours is looser and really is about those older cars you see that make you smile and feel very good and maybe bring back youth and memories. The two classic cars featuring in this article is the black Porsche 911 933 and the 1960 Renault Floride. These classic cars come into our workshops at Edgecliff Automotive and Cooper Park Garage, where they are treated with the care and attention that such a vehicle requires. Joshua says to look after one of these vehicles is not just a matter of regular oil changes, much more is required. They have original parts. They are still available for Porsche, Mercedes and BMW. Your car will change its classification if the parts are not original. We often have a classic car parked on one of our hoists waiting for its parts to arrive from overseas. Preventative maintenance is the name of the game – often these cars are driven less than the more traditional cars, so there are special things you do to compensate. Your classic should have a service every year regardless of the kilometres you drove.

Every two years, check your brakes, change the brake fluid, oil and oil filter, transmission fluid, coolant and gear box. Every four years check diff oil and air conditioning regardless of kilometres. Maintain wheel bearings, keep the exterior clean and polished and keep out of heavy sunlight. If you drive in the country or snow areas, wash the dust and salt off the bottom of your car and the wheel rims, take it for a spin, show off your glorious car. If it is a convertible, put the top down and be proud; match your music to the day and enjoy it allowing everyone else to enjoy it as well. 1960 RENAULT FLORIDE

It was bought out to deal with the dominating VW Beetle. Called the Floride after the Convention in Florida USA, at which it was asked for by the Renault US Executives. It was quickly changed to the Caravelle so as to not upset the other US states that the car was not named after. Louis Renault built his first automobile in 1898 and picture show it looks a lot like the horseless carriage those first cars were dubbed. Renault presented the Renault Floride at a Paris Automobile Event in October 1958, and took over 8,000 orders for the small sports car. In 1959, it was unveiled in the New York Motor Show where it was an instant success with 13,000 orders submitted. It was billed as “A dream car come true.” As a piece of iconic fun, the Floride celebrity was Sammy David Jnr.

Budget shortfall could dump BONDI SURF CLUB makeover Waverley Council has unveiled grandiose plans for the upgrading of Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club (BSBLSC). Trouble is, the plans have a budget shortfall of almost $4 million.

Council has entered into a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the club for a major makeover of the existing heritage-listed club building and construction of a new building at the rear of it. The aim of the work is the creation of a “fit for purpose life saving facility.” According to the council, the work is “desperately” needed to address accessibility challenges, create equal female to male facilities and encourage interaction with the community. The project involves the removal of “bulky mock heritage additions” and temporary work sheds that “detract from the building’s historic value.” The so-called “mock heritage additions” include the terraced area on the first floor of the club and the extensions on each side of the main building, more substantial on the side facing the promenade. Formed in 1907, BSBLSC is officially recognised by Surf Life Saving Australia as the oldest surf lifesaving club in the world. The club building was constructed in 1934 and is set alongside Bondi Pavilion. The plans for its revamp are ambitious ones, offering facilities previously undreamed-of in the Spartan world of surf clubs – a sauna, for instance. Then there will be a club merchandise outlet, surf museum, youth room, and much, much more – $11.4 million more. However, a report tabled at a meeting of Waverley Council held via Zoom revealed that there are currently nowhere near sufficient funds to pay for the project. So the Council and club are holding their hands out to the NSW and federal governments.

“Council’s budget allocation for the BSBLSC Conservation and Upgrade project is currently $4.5 million,” the report states. “BSBLSC is contributing a further $3 million to the project. The total approved funding to date is $7.5 million. BSBLSC will be applying for State and Federal Government funding to cover the projects shortfall of $3.9 million. As per the executed Heads of Agreement, the project will not progress beyond development approval until the project is fully funded.”

Councillors have agreed that revisions may be made to the plans subject to consultations with key community stakeholders including Bondi Beach Precinct, Friends of Bondi Pavilion and members of BSBLSC. Stencil art designed by 30 local school students is now on display along the promenade at North Bondi in a collaboration with Bondi street artist Cameron Scott and Waverley Council. The children designed the stencils at two workshops Cameron held recently as part of Waverley Council's school holiday program. Known in Sydney’s street art scene under his moniker NOTNOT, Cameron produces unique works that enrich urban spaces. “A few years ago, Waverley Council was kind enough to hit me up to make some of the first concrete blocks at Bondi look a bit better," Cameron said. "In my more gallery-focused work I do a lot of ocean abstractions which is why I can stare at the ocean for hours and not get bored.

"I used to have a small gallery in North Bondi where we just put on shows for charities and not-for-profits. One of them was Take 3 For the Sea. When I was asked to do those first blocks I thought Take 3 would be ideal because they have a great message. It’s a great cause and everyone will love it. "This time around, the designs on these blocks at North Bondi have all been done by Waverley kids. The Council had the great idea of putting together some school holiday workshops where I teach kids to cut their first stencils. After those workshops finish, I take those stencils and put them onto the concrete blocks. There are 22 blocks and about 60 stencils designed by 30 kids. "I would be so stoked as the 12-year-old I once was, to be putting works on the beach promenade. It's such a high profile spot and I'm sure they'll be excited to see their stencils when they come down with their parents or visit after school." TONY MAGUIRE

Walkabout DIAMOND BAY

The magnificent cliff faces make it a haven for people to post selfies on instagram standing precariously at the tip of the cliff, and as a result, many have fallen to their deaths. One such example, quoted in Apr 17, 2020 "Teen miraculously survives fall from deadly Diamond Bay cliffs ... a 16-year-old girl was found at the bottom of the perilous cliffs in Rosa Gully".

The remnant vegetation and sandstone overhangs provide habitat for small reptiles such as geckos, water skinks and delicate skinks, snake-eyed skinks, water skinks, grass skinks and delicate skinks. Completing the Diamond Bay Reserve walk passing Clarke Reserve, I head in the direction of Christison Park. On the way in Marne St, I find a quirky ski chairlift outside a house. It's nice to see someone has humour and also able to recycle.

I begin my walk where at Kimberley St. The walk is part of the "The Federation Cliff Walk" which is 5km walking trail from Watsons Bay to Dover Heights. Another reason for why Diamond Bay is famous is the apartment block designed by renowned architect, Harry Seidler, in the 1960's, perched at the end of a cliff, at the beginning of the trail. This epic structure has prime position on the coast. True to the modernist era, it is constructed predominantly of concrete and glass, with sweeping ocean views, but has also subjected the apartments to the harsh weather elements.

The track passes through grassed area and remnant bushland with excellent views over dramatic cliffs.

South Head Cemetery also features a number of naval burials, often marked with anchors - commanders and captains. An example is a marble cross and anchor marking the burial of sea captain Malcolm Green (d. 1904) (that includes a memorial to his brother James Green (d. 1857), captain of the ill-fated Dunbar). A pair of Grecian and Gothic mausoleums memorialise the Foy and Smith families on the southern part of the cemetery. The family plot includes a simple Celtic cross memorial to (Kings Cross) activist Juanita Nielsen (née Foy) who disappeared in 1975. Some other famous people buried here: • Edmund Barton (1920), Australia's first Prime Minister • Sir Roden Cutler (2002), Governor of NSW • Gladys Moncrieff (1976), entertainer • Edmund Resch junior (1963), brewer • John Charles Wright (1933), Anglican Archbishop of Sydney • Members of the Fairfax, Norton, and Packer families • Members of the Foy family (including a monument to the disappeared Foy heiress, Juanita Nielsen)

Don't miss the little pocket of rainforest, known as Rosa Gully, appears just before you leave Diamond Bay Reserve. This is a favourite rock climbing spot suitable for experienced climbers only.

I pass Diamond Bay Bowling Club which in 1959, existed in name only. Shortly after this, there were negotiations for land on which to establish the Club. The Department of Lands came to the party, and a lease in perpetuity was granted to the Club. In 1962, a women's bowling club was formed. This club was constituted primarily of wives of the men members. For the past few years, the Club has been home to one of Sydney's premier bridge clubs, Kings & Queens. I complete the walk turning left into Military Rd and ending at Kimberley St, at Diamond Bay Reserve. At the beginning of Old South Head Rd, is South Head Cemetery, a heritage-listed cemetery, built from 1868 to 1950. Celebrating the Aboriginal Heritage of La Perouse In La Perouse, there resides an Aboriginal community with links that go back before the first European ships moored in Botany Bay.

The 500 indigenous residents identify with the Bidjigal People. They make up the longest-established Aboriginal community in Sydney. Yet, since European arrival, the cultural focus of La Perouse has been on its French connection. The arrival of Britain’s First Fleet on the north side of Botany Bay was followed days later by the docking of two French ships on a scientific mission led by JeanFrançois de Galaup de Lapérouse. Despite the fact that the French only stayed six weeks, they made their cultural mark, with the suburb being named after the explorer and the erection of an obelisk-shaped monument commemorating the visit by Lapérouse and his crew. One of the golden beaches on the La Perouse peninsula is called Frenchman’s Bay. In recent years, local organisations have begun to claim back their cultural heritage in the area, operating the BlakMarkets on Bare Island every three months as a commercial showcase for indigenous culture. Here you can find boomerangs made by Glen Timbery, intricate shellwork from Marilyn and Esme Russel and the work of other Aboriginal artisans. The same organisation that runs BlakMarkets, First Hand Solutions, operates a plant nursery out of La Perouse public school where you can buy specimens of the endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia. First Hand Solutions CEO Peter Colley says: “We are helping the community reconnect to its culture by employing Aboriginal apprentices and operating not only the BlakMarkets but the annual National Indigenous Art Fair at Circular Quay.”

Meanwhile, if you pay a visit to La Perouse Museum, you can see boomerangs, shields, Aboriginal paintings and shellwork. There are also photos and artefacts from the days when there was a boomerang stall whose operators staged boomerangthrowing demonstrations on the lawns beside the museum. However, the museum, run by Randwick Council, currently gives more prominence to exhibits relating to the visit by Lapérouse and his crew. But now Randwick Mayor Danny Said is on a mission to give the original inhabitants of La Perouse more tangible recognition. He had proposed an art installation which will recognise the area’s Aboriginal heritage.

The Mayor says the art installation, to be designed in consultation with La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council, would “bring some balance to the storytelling of our shared history.” He says the project would complement the recent installation of bronze sculptures on the other side of the bay at Kurnell to mark the 250th anniversary of Cook’s landing and his meeting with the Aboriginal inhabitants. Councillors voted in favour of the Mayor’s proposal and Council officials are now investigating options for incorporating the installation into a landscape concept plan. TONY MAGUIRE

Oh I do love to be beside the seaside... Before the time of flights to Bali and trips around the world people amused themselves holidaying in their own country. As no place in the UK is further than 117km from the sea it is not surprising that, in Victorian England, they flocked to the beach where they could enjoy entertainment, a dip in the sea and, very internationally, “promenade” and “rendezvous”. 17,000km away Sydneysiders were not about to miss out on this, and a trip to Coogee was “just what the doctor ordered.” Here’s how Coogee became so popular. “Bathing Machines” were introduced in the 1860’s to protect the modesty of young ladies while they changed into swimming costumes, an aquarium was built, double-decker steam trams carried people to the beach, a promenade was built and finally Coogee Ocean Pier was opened July 24,1928. It was described as “Sydney’s Premier Open-Air Rendezvous”, had an orchestra playing on Sunday afternoons and evenings, a “Welter of Games and other attractions” and dancing from 8.00 pm every night (Strictly Ballroom of course). Admission was threepence and sixpence in the evenings, and sixpence all day on Saturdays and Sundays. Children just threepence.

Randwick Council gets smart with parking Randwick City Council has commenced a trial of smart parking technology at its two car parks on the fringes of Coogee Beach. Using the PayStay app, drivers can see if there are high, medium or low numbers of car spaces available at the Coogee Beach and Coogee Oval car parks. The trial began on Sept 1 and will be extended to council car parks in Kensington and Kingsford later in the year. At the Coogee Beach car park, the program is using in-ground sensors in each parking space, while at the Coogee Oval car park, cameras are being used to determine whether a parking space is occupied or available through video imaging and analytics. The images collected are “de-identified” so that plates and faces are not recognisable. Parking availability is relayed to motorists via the PayStay app. They can also use the app to pay for parking, an advantage being the app allows users to only pay for the time they use. Users can opt to receive an SMS reminder if their session is about to end. By the end of September, there will also be digital signage outside the car parks stating how many spaces are available. “It is hoped the signage will help alleviate significant congestion that occurs on busy summer days,” said a Council spokesperson. The Council warns the smart technology may not be smart enough to cope with motor bike and scooter parking. It is possible that a scooter or motorbike parked in a marked space will not trigger the sensor. This is less likely to occur in a camera-monitored parking area. And a word of caution – parking rangers will be using the technology too. “One of the benefits of the smart parking technology is that it can help Council enforce time limits more efficiently,” the Council says. The Integrated Smart Parking project is being funded by Randwick City Council and the federal government’s Smart

Memorial to gay hate crime victims

Waverley Council has selected an art studio to design and build a memorial to the victims of gay hate crime in Marks Park, between Bondi and Tamarama beaches. An upgrade on an existing single basketball court, the facility features netball and basketball line markings and custom goals that can be quickly converted to accommodate either sport, with the addition of low-level sports lighting to enable evening play. Further relief measures for small businesses Council has extended a range of relief measures for local small businesses to help ease the ongoing economic impacts of COVID-19.

From the 1970s to the 1990s, the park was a gay beat and the scene of several murders and gay bashings. Victims were hurled over the cliff at the edge of the park. The Council has commissioned UAP Studio to design and construct a stone memorial featuring brass plaques carrying positive messages about the LGBTQI community. The installation, titled Rise, is expected to be completed by February next year. Council is contributing $100,000 to the project, while the AIDS Council of NSW is putting forward $80,000.

Reporting rubbish and other problems via app

The measures, valued in excess of $2 million, are in addition to a $5 million relief package launched in March to help all small businesses, including local pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants.

Attention Waverley residents – is there a small mountain of illegally-dumped rubbish in your neighbourhood? Or perhaps your car’s suspension has been damaged driving over a pothole in one of the roads in Waverley LGA. You can take a photo and report the issue to Council using the Snap Send Solve app.

Rent relief for Council’s small and medium commercial and community tenants will be extended for a period of six months from Oct 1 - Mar 31, 2021 with a further review of the program to be undertaken and reported to Council in February, 2021.

Council has reported an increased use of the platform since April last year, when it entered into an agreement with Snap Send Solve for the creation of an upgraded version of the app allowing the use of pictures and logging of contact details for people making reports.

Footpath dining fees will be waived until June 30, 2021, an additional six months of relief which follows a recent extension to Dec 31, 2020. Visit woollahra.nsw.gov.au/community/business.

A report tabled to Council by Tanya Potts, Manager, Customer Service, said: “The vast majority of issues sent to Council using the Snap Send Solve app are reports of dumped rubbish. Residents are able to utilise the app on their phone when they are out and about to quickly and easily report dumping in their neighbourhood so that it can be promptly investigated and removed by Council.”

Carbon neutral certification

Council has been officially certified as carbon neutral. This significant achievement was achieved through the implementation of a number of energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives, including installation of rooftop solar systems and lighting upgrades and a power purchase agreement involving 30% of electricity at Council’s five large sites supplied by the Moree Solar Farm. Council to upgrade three playgrounds

Good news for local kids – Waverley Council is upgrading three playgrounds, at Marlborough Reserve in Bronte, Bondi Beach and Varna Park in Waverley. The upgrade at Marlborough Park has been delayed due to COVID 19 recruitment challenges but is now expected to begin by this spring. Starting around the same time will be a $210,000 makeover of the Bondi Beach playground, which will be turned into a “multi-age play facility.” The upgrade at Varna Park is further away because the community needs to be consulted about the plans. Council has budgeted the project at $249,000.

Condolences for Beirut blast

Randwick councillors observed a one minute silence to express condolences to the people of Beirut and their loved ones devastated by the recent explosion in the Lebanese capital. “Our hearts are with the people of Lebanon who are suffering through this tragedy,” said Mayor Danny Said, who moved a motion calling for the one minute silence. “Randwick and our neighbouring local government areas, namely Bayside Council, are home to many residents who have family, connections or were born in Lebanon. “Our prayers go out to the Lebanese community within Australia, who are grieving the loss of family, friends and loved ones.”

BUS ROUTE CUTS

We are aware that the NSW Government is beginning to cut bus services and remove bus stops as a result of the completion of the light rail and the impending privatisation of our buses. I am calling on the NSW Government to immediately begin community consultation.

Green waste pick-ups

Do you have an accumulation of green waste that has outgrown your wheelie bin? Randwick Council has extended its green waste kerbside pick-up service until Wednesday, September 30. It has extended the service to ease recent heavy demand at the for the Saturday green waste drop-offs at the Council recycling depot in Perry Street. Book your kerbside waste pickup through the Randwick City Council website. Meanwhile, if you want other recyclables picked up from outside your home, you can use the Recycle Smart app and Council will collect it for $2 a bag.

WHAT IS

CORONAVIRUS? Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Recommendations for face covering use by the general public vary, with some authorities recommending against their use, some recommending their use, and others requiring their use. At present, there is not enough evidence for or against the use of masks (medical or other) in healthy individuals in the wider community. Currently, there is no available vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. Management involves the treatment of symptoms, supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures.

The disease was first identified in Dec, 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of smell. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to viral pneumonia, multi-organ failure, or cytokine storm. The time from exposure to onset of symptoms is typically around 5 days but may range from 2-14 days. The virus is primarily spread between people during close contact, often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, or talking. The droplets usually fall to the ground or onto surfaces rather than remaining in the air over long distances. People may also become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face. Over time on surfaces, the amount of virus declines until it is insufficient to remain infectious, but it may be detected in a laboratory for hours or days.

It is most contagious during the first three days after the onset of symptoms, although spread may be possible before symptoms appear and in later stages of the disease. The standard method of diagnosis is by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from a nasopharyngeal swab. Recommended measures to prevent infection include: • Frequent hand washing. • Maintaining physical distance from others (especially from those with symptoms). • Covering coughs, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face. • In addition, the use of a face covering is recommended for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers.

COVID-19: VIETNAM TESTED EARLY When COVID-19 began wreaking worldwide havoc, Vietnam’s early measures started proving themselves.

In the initial phase up till May 1, a hundred days into the outbreak, Vietnam had confirmed just 270 cases and no deaths across its 97.4m population, with no community transmission since April 15. By August 24, Vietnam reported 1016 confirmed cases and only 27 deaths. As soon as the ‘smoking gun’ was detected, Vietnam tackled the virus head on – and benefited from a lot of preparation and research which focused on strategic testing, aggressive contact tracing and effective communication campaigns. Vietnam’s first case of COVID-19 was reported on January 23, 2020. A week later, on January 30, visas for Chinese tourists were no longer issued and Vietnam formed a national steering committee, initially meeting every two days. At the end of the ten-day Lunar New Year holiday on January 31 and with only five confirmed in-country cases – the government mandated that all schools nationwide remain closed.
