BEGINNING TO SEE THE LIGHT Who would have believed on January 1st, in the year with perfect vision (20:20), that by the end of the financial year, the economy of Australia would have been decimated, by an invisible virus that would kill over 100 people and infect over 7,000? Not many, that’s for sure. But, in truth, Bill Gates had already warned us of this possibility in a TED talk given in March 2015, and for those reading in digital format, we can bring that talk to you right here. Just click on the image above! It’s a sobering thought that the human “fight or flight” response is geared for handling imminent problems, large or small, but not problems, somewhere in the future, even when they are massive. And so it was that my wife and I were at Circular Quay on March 8, when the Ruby Princess first docked, talking to Tasmanians who were about to depart to New Zealand. There was some mention of Coronavirus (not yet COVID-19), but certainly no anticipation of what was to be unleashed just 10 days later. By March 18, we were hesitant to meet people, even people we knew well, for a cup of coffee, and by March 23, all pubs and clubs were in full lock down and would not open until mid May 2020, and even then, with many limitations. The intervening period saw a rapidly escalating lockdown, with new restrictions weekly, the close down of many nonessential businesses, and instructions to self isolate with signs everywhere saying “stay indoors”. Since then restrictions have been gradually eased, but it is not until July 1, that
we are expecting to return to anything approaching “normal”, and that is being said with trepidation given a vigorous new outbreak in Victoria. At the outset we were warned that this “new economy” could last for six months, but fortunately, the intense period was nearer six weeks and the days of low traffic, empty streets, closed beaches and shut down community venues slowly eased. Hopefully never to return.
Nevertheless, we continue to self isolate, tap forearms instead of shake hands, carry sanitiser and wipes, feel guilty if we sneeze and celebrate that we can now, meet with increasingly larger numbers of our friends and family. We were spared the numbers killed by Spanish Flu, the lockdown came and went quickly, our health workers and community bodies served us magnificently. It was real, but all happened so fast it seems like a dream, one that will fade as we awake. In it we held our families closer, saw the night stars more clearly, laughed at COVID-19 memes, valued our friends and neighbours more, trod more lightly on the earth, saw that nature was fine without us, that we are the guests and nature is not the intruder. It was a time to take stock, to savour and remember. To help us do that we have used the last section of Digital Edition 18 to record what happened in images from around the world, and in our little corner. We regard it as a once in a lifetime Souvenir Edition and may still add to it from time to time. Those interested can find it on www.issuu.com/easternsuburbslife
In the meantime, we have been emboldened by Churchill’s instruction to “Never let a good crisis go to waste” and along with many, many other businesses used the shut down to change how we work and introduce new products and services. In particular, we have a new Classified Advertising section that provides combined Hard Copy and Digital advertising, at very cost effective prices, and the new, free Eastern Suburbs Community Network. Details of both can be found later in this edition of the paper. Finally, we would like to thank the following contributors who supported the Online Edition 18 of the paper. Without them there would have been no opportunity to record the dramatic unfolding of the Coronavirus in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. In order of appearance they are: Chillibonbon Creatif, Novale Bathrooms, Luxury Chandeliers Sydney, Home Sweet Home Nursing, Edgecliff Hearing, Sakura La Dog Grooming, The Field at Easts Rugby, Edgecliff Automotive, Cooper Park Garage, Hair By Yolanda, BP Health & Wealth, Insight East Education, St Mark's, Darling Point, Woollahra Library, Sydney Yoga Collective, Snap Printing Bondi Junction, Tremayne West Insurance, Noel D’Souza’s Chemists, LF Construction, Realise Business, Doug Briscoe Cars and Tracey Chandler. Hugely popular are the small businesses, and with big stars; they even have Elizabeth Taylor! That’s her real name, however this ET is an expert fruitologist and a director of Kings Cross Organic Food Markets.
So, ance you’re a “Friend of Potts Point” you won’t be surprised that you are one of many. Once the most densely populated suburb in Australia it was earlier called Paddy’s Point or Woolloomooloo Hill.
“The easing of COVID-19 restrictions has made a big difference and we are delighted that we can now open on both Saturday and Sunday,” says Taylor. The markets are a great favourite with locals, and, every weekend, draw visitors from all around.
Potts modestly renamed it after himself in 1830 so it now has a history stretching over three centuries, from a time when windmills sat on the corner of Roslyn & Darlinghurst streets, to a time when you can keep up to date with Potts Point news on a phone in your pocket.
This inner-city suburb was named by early landowner Joseph Potts, an accountant with the Bank of NSW, and Macleay Street immortalises Colonial secretary Alexander Macleay. So, the suburb is steeped in history from the very earliest days of Sydney.
To read a more detailed article on the history of Potts Point, by community member, Paula Towers, pop along to the community website where you can download the app or simply click on the Local History tab.
Phil Mace, local web and media specialist, helps local businesses share their story “The lockout laws certainly caused a lot of grief” says Phil, “But it has spawned innovation and encouraged new businesses that bring back the Bohemian atmosphere of the 1930’s”. Asked for examples of people he thinks have adapted well he mentions Athena at AXL Bizarre, Kirsty at Jimmy Liks, Mike Bowen & Craig at 50,60,70 and Douglas at Café de la Fontaine. Potts Point is clearly a place of variety and contrast bringing together a busy mix of residents, businesses, visitors and community bodies. All with something to say about local history, community news, the latest fashions, new eateries, special offers, favourite charities and how best to keep fit and well. Which is why Eastern Suburbs Life is launching a new “Friends of Potts Point” app. If you’re interested to read and share

How to reduce premature skin aging The sun plays a major role in prematurely aging our skin. Other things that we also can age our skin more quickly than it naturally would.
HAIR BY YOLANDA
More than cut and colour Yolanda Austin is a London-trained hair stylist and colour expert with a small salon tucked away in Double Bay’s Elbon Arcade.
Here are the following tips for you to prevent premature skin aging:
1. PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN EVERY DAY
You can protect your skin by seeking shade, covering up with clothing, and using sunscreen that is broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water-resistant.
2. APPLY SELF-TANNER RATHER THAN GET A TAN Every time you get a tan, you prematurely age your skin.
3. IF YOU SMOKE, STOP!
Smoking greatly speeds up how quickly skin ages. It causes wrinkles and a dull, shallow complexion.
4. AVOID REPETITIVE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
When you make a facial expression, you contract the underlying muscles. If you repeatedly contract the same muscles for many years, these lines become permanent.
5. EAT A HEALTHY, WELL-BALANCED NUTRITIOUS DIET
A diet containing lots of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate aging so eat more fresh fruit and veggies along with your whole food meals.
6. DRINK LESS ALCOHOL
Alcohol is rough on the skin. It dehydrates the skin, and in time damages the skin. This can make us look older.
7. APPLY A FACIAL MOISTURISER EVERY DAY
Moisturiser traps water in our skin, giving a more youthful appearance. For more wellness advice please contact
Brigitta on 0450 282 452
Soothing sore throat tea Hair by Yolanda, has been in Double Bay, since 2013, and before that she was with a larger salon in Woollahra for 11 years. The salon, is a boutique-style, one-woman business. Most of her clients have been coming to her for years. "I have seen them marry and have children. Now they’re telling their daughters, if you’re going to get your hair coloured for the first time, go to Yolanda!"
During the cooler months, make an extra effort to avoid nasty cold and flus. Here is a gluten free tonic for you to make at home: Supports immunity and helps relive symptoms of sore throats and coughs.
INGREDIENTS TO MAKE ONE CUP OF TEA
• 5ml of Olive leaf extract - natural flavour • 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey • 1 squeeze of lemon juice • 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves • 1/2 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger root • 1/4 teaspoon ot tumeric root powder • 1 cup of freshly boiled water
METHOD
• Add ingredients to a teapot with freshly boiled water. • Brew for 5 minutes. • Pour tea through the strainer. • Stir in olive leaf extract. • Sip while warm. Drink up to three cups throughout the day!

It is not just Yolanda’s cutting and colouring skills that draw clients to her salon. You see, Yolanda is more than just a hairdresser to them. She is a trusted friend. "When you’re a hairdresser you’re also a counsellor and sounding board,’ Yolanda says. “I try not to give advice, but sometimes it’s impossible not to. But what is said in the salon, stays in the salon!" The salon has two styling chairs plus a reclining chair for shampoos. The shampoo chair also gives you a back massage. "Because of the salon’s small size, there are never more than two clients in at the one time," says Yolanda, who studied hairdressing at the London College of Fashion, and worked in Knightsbridge.
SUPERIOR QUALITY HAIR PRODUCTS
Yolanda sources the best quality hair products from manufacturers such as Alfaparf Milano. She only uses products that are free of harmful chemicals and will keep your hair in good condition. "For example, the Alfaparf Milano shampoo is sodium, laurel and sulphate free and the colours are ammonia-free. Even though we’re using strong chemicals, we do our best to protect the hair."
ONE-ON-ONE HAIRDRESSING EXPERIENCE
Yolanda describes herself as a skilled all-round hairdresser, with particular skills in the colour department. She sums up her point of difference as giving the client "a one-on-one hairdressing experience." "You’ll never be thrust over to the junior for the end of colour blow dry. You’ve got me from beginning to end."

Lifestyle tips to help prevent hearing loss
Care with skill
plus kindness
As our community ages, people are seeking safe alternatives to ensure loved ones are treated with dignity, as well as, skill in a caring environment.
Cue the services of Home Sweet Home Nursing. Committed to ensuring people can stay in the comfort of their own home as long as possible, HSHN has two people at the helm that go above and beyond to maintain high standards of medical assistance. Their quality of nursing experience and expertise offers a unique service which makes a real difference.
1. Manage your blood pressure and cardiac health as high blood pressure and heart disease can damage the fragile mechanisms of the ear.
5. Eat foods high in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, E and folate, potassium and magnesium. A vitamin/mineral rich diet is recommended.
2. Stop smoking and vaping, and limit drinking, as these can have a big negative impact on hearing health.
6. Know your family history. A family history of hearing loss may give you advanced notice and allow you to reduce your risk of the negative impacts of hearing loss, such as cognitive decline, depression and social isolation.
3. Keep diabetes under control, as diabetes can damage the cells in your inner ears. 4. Exercise and practice stress reduction, as exercise improves blood flow around your body including your ears.
7. Be aware of drugs that cause hearing loss. Talk to your GP if you are worried about drug impact on hearing. If there is a risk, you may be able to take an alternative drug to reduce your risk of drug-related hearing loss.

Between them, Marella Stigler and Karen Kelly have over 60 years’ experience as registered nurses. Their combined expertise covers public and private residential care, community care as well as private home nursing and they maintain an enthusiastic focus on individual care. Marella has personal experience in this area – an experience which inspired the creation of HSHN. “Instead of a hospital atmosphere – which can be noisy and you can’t have family coming in and out, I brought my dad home for six weeks before he died; he had family and his animals around him.” This ensured his peaceful passing within a caring, loving environment. It’s this family atmosphere that is HSHN’s point of difference.
Why did they start this service? “We believe in really caring about the person we’re looking after,” Marella emphasises. The pair knows what patients and clients want – and need. This extends to their team of quality carers, numbering 30 and growing with an expanding clientele. “We’re very strict about who works for us: they have to be kind and like what they’re doing.” An obvious advantage of Home Sweet Home Nursing is personal service available around the clock: “Not many agencies can say they have a clinical nurse specialist running their business or available 24/7 – because we care,” enthuses Marella, who is a specialist in aged care, dementia and palliative care as well as being a clinical educator. “I go with staff and teach them on the job, and I’m on the phone 24 hours a day to support them.” The extensive services offered by HSHN cover care in the areas of daily visits, respite, hospice and palliative, dementia, 24-hour (live-in), post-hospital as well as leisure and lifestyle and nursing home support. Such good care often requires nursing supervision to ensure pain relief and comfort. “I’m passionate about what I do and want to keep people at home as long as possible. Everyone loves home!’” Marella says. As Home Sweet Home Nursing’s motto emphasises: “Because You Can’t Always Be There But We Can.”

ST MARK’S A CORNERSTONE OF OUR MODERN SOCIETY
8:00am · 10:00am · 5:30pm
www.stmarksdp.org When St Mark’s Anglican Church Darling Point was founded as a ‘Chapel of Ease’ in 1847, Sydney was a very different place from today. Located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, Insight East Education is an all-encompassing tutoring facility whose founders have 20 years in combined experience of private tutoring and teaching, catering for students from K-12. Most of the students attend schools such as Cranbrook, Scots, Ascham, SCEGGS, Rose Bay Secondary, Sydney Grammar, Emanuel and Reddam. They also offers online sessions, so students come from all over Sydney and country areas within NSW. Tutors are available 7 days a week and at any time of day. Predominantly, most of the lessons occur on afternoons after school. and also over the weekend. What really sets Insight East Education apart from other tutoring companies is their tutors. All the tutors are past students of one of the major schools in the eastern suburbs area and are only one to three years out of high school themselves.
This means that they can relate to the students they are teaching on a more personable level as they call upon their recent memories and experiences of school to help guide the student. This creates a great connection between the tutor and pupil. On top of this, having just completed the HSC themselves, the tutors are familiar with the syllabus, what is expected in exams and have up-to-date and current notes which they are always more than happy to share with their students. Insight East Education combine wa holistic approach to education with expertise, resources and passion of recent successful graduates, state-ranked Head-Tutors, and Senior HSC markers. Tutors are currently available for home visits (temperature checks are made beforehand). Lesson are ONLINE, via ZOOM.

Only since 1833 had European settlers enjoyed direct access to Mrs Darling’s Point when the new road to South Head Road had been laid and 15 allotments of land of approximately 10-15 acres sold off. Elegant new homes were being established in close proximity to the city. Sydney then had a total population of less than 40,000 people, including only a few hundred indigenous people living nomadically along the southern shores. The colony until 1853 was under military governorship and representative democracy was still limited to those who owned property – universal suffrage and votes for women were still half a century off. Government-provided social security, education and public health were virtually non-existent. It was from these humble beginnings that men of noble character joined together to worship and, through combining their resources, to provide leadership and public service to their city and the emerging nation. Such notables as TS Mort, Sir Charles Nicholson, Robert Tooth, Edward Knox and Sir Thomas Mitchell frequented St Mark’s Church and lived in Darling Point. These early pioneers provided much of the leadership of early Australia, supporting self-government and our legal system and founding universities, schools, hospitals and vast business empires from this precinct. St Mark’s has a proud tradition of helping the most disadvantaged of our community that continues today in support of the Living Waters Mission in Redfern, Rough Edges in Darlinghurst and many other evangelical Christian activities that are essential to the fabric of our society. In coming editions, we will be sharing some stories of the lives of these outstanding individuals in a regular historical series, ‘Characters of the Eastern Suburbs’.

target-seeking shotguns were mounted on the chassis. It had spike producing tyres and a passenger ejecting seat. James used that mechanism once to turn the car the right way up after it had rolled over. So smart. That car is not for sale but is on display in a spy museum I think. The real car won the “coolest car of the year” award, probably after it had blown up the ice hotel! That’s it on this amazing car. In the workshop which is always full of amazing cars, you notice this one as soon as you walk through the door. It is sleek, beautiful to look at and has class to spare. Your car will always be in good company. PEG THATCHER
Cooper Park Garage: An icon There is a lot of talk all of a sudden about iconic cars, and almost all of us do not have one. however, Cooper Park Garage is an icon of its own. It’s the garage in the park that many people in the area already know. The beautiful building made of solid stone with an iron roof (pictured below), totally iconically Australian.
When I asked the owner of this car for one line about his car, he said “it is like a tadpole; it is all about the engine!” I’ve had that image ever since he said it. Sam, from 'Seen Through Glass' says it has “tunnel blast” and is “car-fection” and it is a raw and impassioned car. The Top Gear guys love it, they say “this is one of the world’s last truly analogue supercars and it deserves to be celebrated” and, of course, James Bond drove it. The one that rumbles into Edgecliff Automotive is truly beautiful and growls perfectly, and if you want one it’s a good idea to get one, there are not many and Aston Martin has said it is a limited run, and the last for this platform and engine. Back in 2007, Aston Martin left Ford and went in private hands with an enormous ambition – jam the biggest and fiercest engine Aston Martin had into the smallest car it made, and out of left field came the Vantage. Here’s a clue how car people who know, feel about this car: the twin-turbocharged V12 always sounds good; but when you do a cold start, then clear its throat with your right foot, it pales into insignificance; the V12 fires into life with a bark and makes you
ears smile. There’s some awesome imagery about this car and the noise it makes. Josh drove it out of the workshop a few weeks ago. Pedestrians stopped to watch drawn by the amazing sound and captivated by the beautiful shape and elegance of the body. People who know, talk about the magic of Henrik Fiskers pen in the design of the Vantage. There is some clever innovation in this very short-wheelbase vehicle with this much power and torque, to stop it tossing you onto the road, for example, the battery which is very heavy is inside the car, and in the middle behind the front seats to balance the chassis. It has a proper hydraulic steering rack. You work harder with your arms to counteract the weight increase through the wheel, but you know what is going on at the wheels. It is available in auto (Sportshift 111) and a 7-speed manual. You choose! You'll notice three fun things about the keys; The first one is just a valet key, ordinary so the valet can park your car. The second one, is much fancier and looks like it was made in Hogwarts or for the space race. The third one, which comes in a leather case for more than $2,000 – the sapphire key - is called the “Emotion Control Unit.” It comes out of it's leather case, shines with crystal and steel and beautifully slides into tube designed for
it and starts the car. Then it pops out and you put in it your pocket.
Long before it became a garage it was a dairy, then a garage of the old school where you bought petrol and mechanics worked on your car.
Another fun thing that is worth talking about is the direction finder. This car has a choice of lots of languages, and even a choice of which gender you want to talk to you. A bit of analysis uncovered the following: in Arabic there is only a male voice to choose, in Czech you can only choose female, Dutch– male, Norwegian-male and in Italian no males and a choice of two females. A touch of gender bias in the navigation system.
In the winter, months your car can come under alot of stress. Joshua and Jeff suggest you have your car serviced, and make sure you get your battery checked, as they can be less efficient in winter.
For all the displays you can choose the background and the two cup-holder in the centre console, folds back to becomes a place your phone fits, amazing attention to detail. There is a suspension button on the inside that enables you to choose your suspension – sport mode or track mode.
Also check fluids in your car which include wiper fluid and anti-freeze, brakes, transmission and the rubber on your windscreen wipers, tyres and their pressure. If your car was born before the 1980's remember to warm it up before you drive off.
Cooper Park Garage is managed by Jeff, Clint and Matt, totalling 60 years of experience between them.
A clever thing with the doors, they stay wherever you let go of them. Much better than having them crash back into a wall as it is with most cars, called an infinity hinge. We should all have them on our cars. The components of this very special carthe cylinder block and heads, crankshaft, connecting-rods, pistons, camshaft, inlet and exhaust manifolds, lubrication system and engine management were all designed in house by Aston Martin and the engine was assembled by hand. There are many thousands of options the Vantage owner to customise their amazing car. Each one is unique.
The Bond Connection: James Bond drove many Aston Martins – one was this car. This Aston Martin Vantage was used in “Die Another Day” and had “adaptive camouflage.” I’m sure we all remember James with the special clicker that activated the cloaking device and the sleek car wobbled a bit and disappeared. It also had front firing rockets in between two machine guns and

Geoff Miles COUNSELLING "This is the work I love"
Some years ago “Vince Bartels” said as I was exiting dairy farming; “Geoff whatever you do now make sure you work with people”. I didn’t know then how perceptive Vince was.
MOVING DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A STRESSFUL EVENT
Previously renowned as a 100kg+ competitor in the Pyramid Hill Iron Man event. I had always found reward in helping people. In agriculture, with another, we formed community groups for mutual support and improvement. With environmental issues I worked very early on techniques for remediation of saline affected areas in Northern Victoria. Conferencing, while managing a large conference centre on the South Coast we integrated accommodation with outdoor education and linking that with the K-12 curriculum. I followed this with administration in a local church with a large welfare footprint followed by five years as a Community Chaplain in a housing area in the inner city of Sydney. In chaplaincy I saw the critical need for people to process grief, loss and early childhood abuse properly, regardless of whether it is neglect, physical, emotional or of a sexual nature.
Addiction and dysfunction are often symptoms of deeper problems. Allowing people to talk confidently with a person they can trust is a way for many to move forward, where previously they have been stalled for many years. This is the work I love.

THOUSANDS OPPOSE SURF CLUB REDEVELOPMENT
Waverley Council has begrudgingly accepted a 5905-signature petition protesting against the upgrade of Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club and community facilities building.
metres taller and the floor space will increase by over 25 per cent. Plus, the community will have over 500 square metres of public space taken away, including the “hang out” area for surfers between the cub and kiosk. “There’s no justification for the club to be bigger,” says the President of Bronte Boardriders, Robert Bruns (pictured). “The community is overwhelmingly against the proposal as it currently stands.”
“The petition does not fully comply with the Petitions Policy,” noted the council’s governance officer Richard Coelho in a report tabled to a full meeting of Council. “However, it is recommended that the petition be noted as part of the community consultation process.”
Robert said the “hang out” area, consisting of shallow, bricked-in alcoves, is an important community meeting spot. More than that, he described it as “a kind of spiritual home” for local surfers. “It’s a space where kids from 12 years old to adults aged 60 or more can connect and feel they belong.”
Submitted online through change.org, the petition says the proposal for the redevelopment of Bronte Surf Life Saving Club does not best represent community interests. The main point of opposition is the sheer scale of the proposed redevelopment. In addition, surfers said they will be ousted from their “hang out” area beside the club. The petition says “the structural overdevelopment” will dominate the beachfront and significantly impact the natural aesthetic of Bronte Beach and park. In addition, it will see the destruction of picnic and BBQ spaces within Bronte Park.
He said council rangers and surf life savers would also have to relocate under the plan, with a new ranger facility intruding into park space while life savers would operate from a new area on the north side of the club. According to council documents, the project will cost almost $13 million and will be carried out through a Public Private Partnership (PPS). Waverley Council claims: “The proposed redevelopment will see the existing structure demolished to make way for a new and sustainable building that will meet the needs of contemporary surf lifesaving and the wider community.”
“We support a vision for the redevelopment of the surf club and surrounding amenities, and we recognise the important role surf lifesaving plays in our coastal communities. However, we strongly believe that the current proposal has been made without adequate consideration of the broader community’s concerns.”
Former Mayor John Wakefield said: “The project will result in significant improvements to amenities, provide better lifeguard facilities, improve workplace health and safety requirements and will ensure the service the Club provides to the community will continue into the future.”
The plan involves the demolition of the existing Surf Life Saving Club building, which it says is no longer “fit for purpose,” suffering from concrete cancer and cracked brickwork. It wants to lodge a development application by the end of July and commence the upgrade within a year. However, the project isn’t a just an upgrade. Under the proposal the Bronte Surf Club building will be more than two

In this Edition 19, I walk down Birrell St, Waverley through to Queens Park ...The area is filled with many historical buildings and takes about half an hour to complete.
1 In 1936 an enshrined statue of Our Lady of Succour was procured from France and presented to the school by J.J O’Brien on behalf of the Old Boys. For some time it was situated on top of the “Merrowie” building on Birrell Street. On the completion of the Centenary Building in 1975, the statue was moved to the centenary building rooftop – the highest point of the College – by helicopter.
I'm beginning my walk in Birrell St, Waverley, just outside Waverley College, which was founded in 1903. Waverley College is a Catholic day school for boys in the Edmund Rice tradition. It has a non-selective enrolment policy and currently caters for approximately 1,400 students from Years 5 to 12, as well as a coeducational preschool.
Opposite Waverley College is St Marys Parish Anglican Church, built by Edmund Blackett. The foundation stone was layed on June 6, 1863, and the building was consecrated on May 19, 1864. Ten years later it was extended by 17ft to its present size. In 1993 a gallery was added and the organ relocated. The stained glass windows are some of the earliest to be made in the colony, the two in the first bay of the south wall of the nave being the earliest windows to be commissioned in NSW. Crossing Council St you can't miss the Mural of Easts, painted by Sid Tapia, a Sydney based street artist.

I walk down Blenheim and Isabella Streets and locate many of the sandstone houses probably built by Simeon Pearce in 1850s, they have been renovated inside, but the past remains on the outside to tell the story. I come across a beautiful street lined with palm trees down the centre called Cuthbert St, then onto Bourke St and can't miss the Wolf of Bourke St, street art mural, just by the bus stop. Heading towards Queens Park I pass a beautiful rooftop garden on a split level house, with commanding views of Sydney CBD.

10
I finish my walk at Queen's Park which was originally part of the Sydney Common and later the Lachlan Swamps Water Reserve. Today it is a large urban park, part of the Centennial Parklands. It was dedicated with Centennial Park in 1888 as part of the centenary celebrations of European settlement in Australia.
Behind this house in Botany St, is the Waverley Radio Telephone Tower, this 82 metre structure was built in 1945 and supports radio systems for telephone, television and data services. The receiver dishes resembled Panadol tablets and was affectionately called the "Panadol Tower", which have now been dismantled. Directly opposite the road in Birrell St is the War Memorial Hospital complex. A collection of buildings with a rich past. You can spend hours in the grounds just looking at the gardens and buildings. The main building, the 'Edina' building was built by Ebenezer Vickery around the 1860s. Vickery was a merchant, manufacturer and philanthropist, born in 1827 and died in 1906. He was a wealthy businessman who was

Later they had a market garden on the corner of Bronte Rd and Birrell St. Simeon Pearce was the first Mayor of Randwick. MEET MARIA - Fighting to save rampant development
Maria Poulos-Conkin has emerged as a prominent community leader by spearheading the fight against a proposed cruise ship terminal at Yarra Bay.
Raised in Maroubra, Maria has the fighting spirit in her blood because her father Theo Poulos was a proud union man who was an activist for many causes including feminism, labor rights and heritage. Since forming the Bay coalition, her group has hooked up with groups fighting other causes, some of them close to home like the various campaigners against developer Harry Trigaboff’s vision for Little Bay - a 1900 - unit apartment complex that would dominate the landscape.
Now Maria is fighting, alongside other groups, a number of further developments threatening the public health, environment and culture of Sydney’s south-east. On her radar are plans by Meriton for a 22-storey apartment complex dominating Little Bay, the proposal for a waste incinerator at Matraville and the massive residential development at Pagewood.
Another project that Maria is opposing is a waste incinerator planned for the edge of Matraville. “It would burn an enormous amount of non-organic, non-recyclable wastes including plastics, releasing sulphur dioxides and other toxins,” said Maria. “In Europe, they’re moving away from these kinds of incinerators but here we’re still prepared to embrace them.”
Maria came to prominence two years ago when plans for the proposed cruise terminal were announced. She said she regarded the idea of placing the terminal in quiet Yarra Bay as “an act of bastardry” that left her in a state of near-shock. “It was the sheer audacity that got to me, the fact that they could dismiss the effects on public health, the marine environment and the cultural heritage of the area, in particular the Aboriginal heritage.” So in July 2018, Maria formed the Save the Bay Coalition, a Facebook group which has blossomed into a grassroots movement with more than 7000 members.
Maria Poulos-Conkin
While the NSW government is now on the back foot over the plan because of the current public health implications of cruise ships, Maria and others are determined to keep fighting against what she describes as “something that would basically be a gift for the foreign cruise industry.” Maria stresses that the work of Save the Bay Coalition has been “very much a collective effort” and has involved many other people working with her on a committee basis.
And don’t get Maria started on the massive residential developments taking place in Pagewood. Well, OK, we did and here’s what she said: “It gets me particularly riled because it is already under way and at least one structure of heritage value has been destroyed. But above all it’s a massive encroachment on the quiet, undeveloped nature of the south-east.” With all the causes she is taking on, does Maria ever see a future for herself in politics? “I have been a member of the Greens, Labor and the Nuclear Disarmament Party at different times,” Maria, who currently works as a public servant, said with a smile. “These days I don’t like party politics, but I might be interested in running on an independent ticket a bit further down the track.” TONY MAGUIRE

Noel helps elderly with contactless prescriptions elderly gentleman. I said to him ‘I can always cook you something else, you don’t have to have the same dish and I am quite a good cook.’ Then he confessed he didn’t really like my chicken cacciatore, in fact he was feeding it to his dog. But he liked my visits and told me, ‘You’re the only person who really cares about me.’“ The care factor is something that has helped Noel become a pillar of the local community since he set up business in Matraville in the mid-1980s. He knows countless customers at his two Matraville pharmacies by name and has always devoted special attention to old folk. Now, with COVID-19 sweeping through the community, Noel and his staff have had to handle a greatly increased workload. He expects that situation to last up to three months. “During that time we’ve got to be very cautious,” he said. He said Bondi was a “COVID-19 hot spot,” with Waverley recently rated the highest risk Local Government Area in Sydney and a pop-up testing clinic set up at Bondi Beach.
We’ve got you covered during the COVID-19 outbreak
Eastern suburbs pharmacist Noel D’Souza has leapt to the rescue of elderly people isolated at home by COVID-19. He and his staff operate a contactless prescription service for older customers, some of whom are on multiple medication regimes. “We’re delivering to the letterbox or door step so the whole process is completely contactless,” says Noel. “They pay over the phone and we obtain the prescriptions from doctors by email or fax.”
He urges other pharmacists who do not already have contactless procedures to put them in place. “Our old and vulnerable need to have special protection during the current crisis,” he said. “The only trouble is that they will become too isolated and could suffer mental health issues as a result. For many elderly people, visits from relatives and others are their only direct social contact. Years ago, I used to deliver medicines and a weekly meal of chicken cacciatore to an
“It’s been reported that backpackers could be prime carriers and the worrying thing is that a lot of the cases in the Waverley LGA can’t be traced to the sources of infection,” Noel said. “There’s a danger the disease could take hold in neighouring beach suburbs like Coogee.” He said that, as well as, the pop-up testing clinic at Bondi, there is one at the former diabetes clinic in Avoca St, Randwick. But one of the main messages from former Randwick mayor Noel is “Don’t Panic!”
He is confident the community will get through the COVID-19 crisis if we all take sensible steps:
1. Wash hands regularly with an antibacterial wash. 2. Keep a 1.5 metre distance from others. 3. Wear a face mask N95 to cover nose and mouth. 4. Use hand sanitizer frequently and wear gloves where possible. 5. Sneeze or cough on your arm or cover mouth and nose. 6. Try not to touch your nose, eyes or mouth. 7. Avoid being in a group of more than two people. 8. Minimise or avoid unnecessary contact with the elderly. Meanwhile, he says, pharmacies are at the “front line” in the battle against the COVID-19 virus and he is managing to maintain stocks of hand sanitizer, face masks, asthma sprays and other in-demand supplies. He urges people in high-risk categories to get vaccinated against flu. “The flu vaccine will not combat COVID-19, however it will it help in reducing the severity and spread of seasonal influenza which can lower a person's immunity and make them susceptible to other illnesses.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Community support during COVID-19
Like all community service organisations, JNC had to rethink the way we support our community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For 45 years we’ve been providing community services and information to increase community wellbeing in the Eastern Suburbs. Most of our programs have been offered face-toface, but the safety challenges during the pandemic required us to find new ways to deliver support.
DIFFERENT WAYS TO DELIVER
First to be adapted was our way of supporting the older people in our community. We created a personalised shopping service so they could stay home and safe during COVID-19. JNC staff purchased and delivered the shopping they needed, and in 11 weeks we have done over 400 shopping trips. To support vulnerable people in our community weekly, JNC compiled and delivered 585 fruit and vegetable packs, 250 frozen meals, 30 sets of toys and 70 beauty packs. We also collaborated with Randwick City Council, Harris Farm, and volunteer groups including Viral Kindness, to prepare and transport 4000 boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables for the community.
TECHNOLOGY TO KEEP IN TOUCH
To reach out despite closed doors at our Maroubra and Bondi Junction centres, JNC made the most of established and new
technologies. We kept up-to-date with older people through friendly phone calls. Our Tai Chi volunteer, Mary, transformed her class into an online group. Our COVID-19 crisis service directory was made available on our website and updated frequently to include new offerings from support services. Our staff created webcasts covering mental health tips, educational resources, access to COVD-19 health information, and safety when returning to school. Our new online Family Activities Guide offers fun and educational activities to increase wellbeing for families confined to home. JNC thanks our staff and volunteers, whose hard work has made this possible. We continue to be flexible in our support methods, adapting to physical distancing requirements.
JNC volunteer Mary has moved her Tai Chi group online
At mid-June we are planning ways to offer more of our services safely face to face. We look forward to opening up our centres and providing a wider range of services. Council forces Junction slow-down with speed humps
Burn baby, burn: Malabar Headland hazard reduction
There will be two in Botany St and others will be in Bourke St, Bennett St and Ruthven St. A further hump will be in Park Pde, Bondi.
The burn will take place between July and August and will be of “moderate intensity,” Randwick Council says. Brushing aside concerns about its effects on environmentally significant Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, the Council claims “the burn will provide ecological benefits” and help the banksia regenerate.
Motorists, prepare for a bumpy, slow journey through Bondi Junction - Waverley Council is installing speed humps at key locations to make sure drivers adhere to 40km/h limits.
All will be 10cm high except for the one in Bourke St which will be 7.5cm because it is on a bus route, according to a report tabled at a meeting of Waverley’s Traffic Committee. “Community consultation within the Waverley Council area has found that an overwhelming proportion of residents want cars to travel slower in their neighbourhoods,” the report said. The council is therefore adopting a strategy of forcing drivers to hit the brake pedal. But it appears speed humps don’t come cheap. “The project delivery cost is currently estimated at $1.4 million,” the report said.
2019 award-winner Ned Wieland Entries for the 2020 Youth Photographic Award & Short Film Prize are now open. Founded by Council to provide an opportunity for young photographers and filmmakers to showcase their creative talents, the Award is open to local high school students or students living in the Woollahra local government area, with cash prizes of up to $2,000. Visit woollahra.nsw.gov.au/news/arts_and_culture for more info and submit your entry by Aug 14.
New gallery at Redleaf
Council will be opening a new art gallery this year at St Brigid’s, the former Woollahra Library building located next door to Council Chambers at Redleaf. The 122-year-old house’s history includes use as the headquarters for the Royal Commission on Espionage and as the Woollahra Art Centre, and it had also previously been a home to many important local families. To be named Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf, it will serve as a community space and in future host events and exhibitions and is anticipated to be open to the public in late 2020. In the meantime, if you’d like to see its story unfold you can subscribe to our Art Gallery e-newsletter or register your interest to be part of the gallery’s upcoming volunteering program at: woollahra.nsw.gov.au/community/ arts_and_culture/art_gallery
RANDWICK
Drivers are also likely to be facing costs because speed humps cause a lot of damage to cars. A survey in the UK found that more than one fifth of drivers had experienced car damage from speed humps. The drivers and passengers inside the vehicles can be damaged too. Another UK study warned that people with degenerated spinal discs or weak bones are at particular risk. Standards set by Australia’s Department for Transport in 1999 stipulate that speed humps must be a minimum of 2.5cm in height and a maximum of 10cm. However, the department recommends a height of between 6.5cm and 7.5cm. Waverley Council is therefore going for the maximum bump for its buck with the 10cm humps.
COVID-19 causes cash crunch for Council
Waverley Council is dipping into its reserves to make up a massive revenue shortfall caused by COVID-19. Councillors approved the extraordinary transfer of an amount of $6.44 million from its Property Strategy Reserve to meet Council’s capital funding requirements for the new financial year. They left plenty of time for topping the fund back up, agreeing that this would be achieved by 2031. A report to Council said “the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced significant uncertainty into Council’s program and financial planning,” foreshadowing cost reductions and closer monitoring of financial reports.
Making public spaces cleaner
Waverley Council is investigating improvements in its cleaning programs for playgrounds, outdoor gyms and toilets against the backdrop of COVID-19. The move is a response to calls made by Liberal Councillors Angela Burrill and Tony Kay.
A controversial hazard reduction burn on unoccupied Malabar headland will go ahead despite concerns by Greens councillors and other members of the community.
Lighting the fire will be the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), which has held a series of meetings with community stakeholders about the burn-off. Under pressure from Friends of Malabar Headland, NPWS agreed to reduce the size of the burn area by 25% to 6ha. However, NPWS appears to have dismissed a suggestion by deputy mayor Philipa Veitch and fellow Green Murray Matson for “mosaic style burns” involving a series of small, lowintensity fires, in line with best environmental practice for Eastern Suburbs Banksia. The headland was previously a World War Two defence facility and today there are still many significant relics from those days, including tunnels and gun emplacements. Two years ago, NPWS and Randwick Council built a scenic boardwalk track providing spectacular ocean views and providing a “missing link” in the eastern beaches coastal walk.
Close the gap for indigenous community, urges D’Souza Councillor Noel D’Souza has called for stronger support and recognition of the Aboriginal Community.
He has tabled a motion before Council acknowledging that more needs to be done on closing the opportunity gap. His motion also proposes closer consultation between Council, local police and indigenous communities, who account for 2.8% of Randwick LGA’s population. The former mayor told a full meeting of Council: “Prime Minister Rudd, said sorry to the 'Stolen Generation', yet their heirs, their grandsons and granddaughters are not fully free and we haven't closed the gap when it comes to health, education and opportunity.”
Creating jobs through capital works and business support
Randwick Council is planning to embark on a $50 million dollar capital works program to help the community bounce back from COVID-19. Around $3 million of those funds would be earmarked for local business support. The council’s vision is to create more than 3,000 jobs by “targeting investment in to areas that need it most to help stimulate recovery.”

WHAT IS
CORONAVIRUS?
Recommendations for face covering use by the general public vary, with some authorities recommending against their use, some recommending their use, and others requiring their use. At present, there is not enough evidence for or against the use of masks (medical or other) in healthy individuals in the wider community.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
Currently, there is no available vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. Management involves the treatment of symptoms, supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures.
The disease was first identified in Dec, 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of smell. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to viral pneumonia, multi-organ failure, or cytokine storm. The time from exposure to onset of symptoms is typically around 5 days but may range from 2-14 days. The virus is primarily spread between people during close contact, often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, or talking. The droplets usually fall to the ground or onto surfaces rather than remaining in the air over long distances. People may also become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face. Over time on surfaces, the amount of virus declines until it is insufficient to remain infectious, but it may be detected in a laboratory for hours or days.
It is most contagious during the first three days after the onset of symptoms, although spread may be possible before symptoms appear and in later stages of the disease. The standard method of diagnosis is by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from a nasopharyngeal swab. Recommended measures to prevent infection include: • Frequent hand washing. • Maintaining physical distance from others (especially from those with symptoms). • Covering coughs, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face. • In addition, the use of a face covering is recommended for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers.

COVID-19 IT'S IN YOUR HANDS
symptoms, which can then range from mild through to severe disease, and sometimes can be fatal. Both viruses are also transmitted in the same way, by coughing or sneezing, or by contact with hands, surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus. As a result, the same public health measures, such as hand hygiene (hand washing), good respiratory etiquette (coughing into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue) and good household cleaning are important actions to prevent both infections. The speed of transmission is an important difference between the two viruses. Influenza typically has a shorter incubation period (the time from infection to appearance of symptoms) than COVID-19. This means that influenza can spread faster than COVID-19. While the range of symptoms for the two viruses is similar, the fraction with severe disease appears to be higher for COVID-19. While most people have mild symptoms, approximately 15% of people have severe infections and 5% require intensive care in a hospital ICU. The proportions of severe and critical COVID-19 infections are higher than for influenza infections.
Will the flu vaccine protect against COVID-19?
No, but it is more important than ever to get a flu vaccine this year. Flu vaccination reduces your chances of getting influenza, which means it also reduces the risk of you having two potentially serious infections, influenza and COVID-19, at the same time. People are encouraged to discuss with their GP or other immunisation providers how to organise to get their influenza vaccination with the social distancing requirements and other measures in place to minimise potential exposure to coronavirus. People not eligible for free flu vaccine can consider also get vaccinated through many pharmacies. Children under 5 years can also access the free influenza vaccine through community health centres and local councils that immunise children.

What are coronaviruses?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some coronaviruses cause illness in humans and others cause illness in animals, such as bats, camels, and civets. Human coronaviruses generally cause mild illness, such as the common cold. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can evolve to infect and spread among humans, causing severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which emerged in 2002, and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) which emerged in 2012.
How is the virus spread?
Human coronaviruses are spread from someone infected with COVID-19 virus to other close contacts with that person through contaminated droplets spread by coughing or sneezing, or by contact with contaminated hands, surfaces or objects. The time between when a person is exposed to the virus and when symptoms first appear is typically 5 to 6 days, although may range from 2 to 14 days. For this reason, people who might have been in contact with a confirmed case are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days. Most COVID-19 cases appear to be spread from people who have symptoms. A small number of people may have been infectious before their symptoms developed.
How long does COVID-19 last on surfaces?
According to the World Health Organisation, it is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (eg; type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment). If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with a common household disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or
wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.
What are the symptoms?
Patients may have fever, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath and other symptoms. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress.
Who is most at risk?
In Australia, the people most at risk of getting the virus are: • Travellers who have recently been overseas. • Those who have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. • People in correctional and detention facilities. • People in group residential settings. People who are, or are more likely to be, at higher risk of serious illness if they get the virus are: • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 50 years and older with one or more chronic medical conditions. • People 65 years and older with chronic medical conditions. • People 70 years and older. • People with chronic conditions or compromised immune systems. • People in aged-care facilities. • People with a disability. At this stage the risk to children and babies, and the role children play in the transmission of COVID-19, is not clear. However, there has so far been a low rate of confirmed COVID-19 cases among children, relative to the broader population. There is limited evidence at this time regarding the risk in pregnant women.
What is the difference between COVID-19 and the flu?
The first symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza (flu) infections are often very similar. They both cause fever and similar respiratory
How long does the COVID-19 infection last?
The infection period for the virus will vary from person to person. Mild symptoms in an otherwise healthy individual may resolve over just a few days. Similar to influenza, for an individual with other ongoing health issues, such as a respiratory condition, recovery may take weeks and in severe cases could be potentially fatal.
How is COVID-19 diagnosed?
Infection with COVID-19 is diagnosed by finding evidence of the virus in respiratory samples such as swabs from the back of the nose and throat or fluid from the lungs. Samples for testing can be taken directly by GPs or at a range of private pathology sites across the state that are suitable for collection of COVID-19, or at public hospitals across NSW.
How is it prevented?
Some simple measures significantly reduce the risk of catching COVID-19 and of spreading it: • Clean your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand rub/sanitiser. • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing and sneezing or use your elbow, not your hands • Avoid close contact with people unwell with cold or flulike symptoms, and stay home if you have these symptoms. • Avoid touching your face and avoid shaking hands with others. • Try to maintain a distance of 1.5 metres from others as much as possible, and avoid crowded places.
Is there a cure or vaccine?
There are no vaccines that protect against COVID-19. There is no specific treatment for COVID-19. Early diagnosis and general supportive care are important. Most of the time, symptoms will resolve on their own. People who have serious disease with complications can be cared for in hospital.
