What's on at Your Library - Winter 2022

Page 1

CE’s welcome Did you know libraries can be good for your health? This season we are focusing on wellbeing. Along with all our regular programs, we have aimed to bring something to every library that might make you feel a bit brighter as we get through the winter months. The ‘winter blues’ are real and up to thirty percent of the population suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder during the grey days of winter. We hope these ideas might help:

· Walk to your local library: Choose a day when the sky is blue and clear or it’s

not raining. Dress warmly, and step out and feel that winter sunshine. Admire how beautiful and clean your world looks.

·

Borrow a book: A 12-year study on health and retirement found that those who read survived around two years longer than those who didn’t read books, magazines and other forms of media. Additionally, those who read for 30 minutes a day were 23% more likely to outlive those who didn’t read often.

· Join an activity or attend an event at the library: Research suggests if people

were to engage regularly in social activities, there would be a 5-12% increase in people reporting better quality of life and a 4-8% reduction in people experiencing symptoms of depression. We hope you will find something in this booklet that will help to banish the SADs and nurture your wellbeing throughout winter. Joseph Cullen Chief Executive
