What's On - Spring 2024

Page 1

Welcome to Spring!

Spring represents new life, renewal and fresh starts. It also signals the start of our final program of events for the year. There is so much on as we head out of winter and the latter part of the year is packed with special months, weeks and days.

October is Local History Month and we have lined up some wonderful opportunities to visit and explore areas of interest in our region. Ross McMullin will be talking about his new book Life so full of promise, telling the story of the generation lost in WWI. As usual, we have plenty of opportunities to find out more about your own ancestors, as well as how to take care of precious family documents and photographs.

Adult Learners Week is in September, and we have organised some introductory classes on a variety of topics that might make you more healthy, wealthy, wise (or happy). We also have our regular technology program with introductory sessions on your laptop, using email and understanding your phone. There is a series of talks on different types of scams, and how to keep yourself safe including the terrifying ‘Now I’m you...how I stole your identity’.

Reading, and the lure of a good story, are never far from our minds at the library and we have a fabulous line-up of authors willing to share their creative journey and the inspiration behind their published writing. This season features writers who make poetry, graphic novels, children’s books, romance, crime, memoir, young adult books, and some books that defy categorisation. Come along and hear about them for yourself!

We look forward to seeing you this spring!

“Let’s write some brand-new poems together in an international tour of poemforms that you’ve probably never heard of! As an experienced poetry educator, I’m totally sick of all the traditional types of poems that get taught in schools, sure they’re fine, but I’m convinced we need new ways to create and compose, thus I’ve been researching some of the lesser known forms of poems from around the world. All these poem-forms are short and not hard to learn or write, so come and discover some of these different poemforms from around the world and have fun writing a whole lot of little poems!”

- Cameron Semmens.
