Get off campus and get out on-the-town.
Just steps from campus is the vibrant community vibe and thriving arts scene of Ypsilanti, named after the Greek war hero Demetrius Ypsilanti. Affectionately known as “Ypsi” (pronounced Ipsi), this city pulsates with a rich history that permeates its dynamic shopping, dining, and entertainment scenes, attracting visitors from both near and far. In Ypsilanti, you can explore three distinct districts - Downtown, Depot Town, and West Cross — each steeped in history and brimming with innovative, bohemian, locally-driven businesses. Ypsi boasts its own unique, groovy, and authentic ambiance, making it an ideal destination for evenings and weekends.

THINGS TO DO IN THE ANN
AREA
SHOP at quirky Wyrd Byrd, retro The Rocket, renowned antique shops, and specialty shops like World of Rocks or Ypsi Art Supply & Atelier.
TAKE in the vibrant art scene at area galleries, theatres and museums. Artists also showcase their work in shops, restaurants, and during community and annual events.
ATTEND intentional, reflective events like Ypsi Pride, or visit an area restaurant hosting drag brunch fundraising for important causes. Ypsi celebrates and welcomes LGBTQ+ culture, business, community, visitors, and allies.
ESCAPE to the great outdoors. Spend time at a park or nature preserve, bike or run the Border to Border Trail along the Huron River, or take a kayak to Ford Lake at sunset.
CELEBRATE Ypsilanti’s automotive and aviation history through its nationally recognized car museum and spectacular festivals. The city is also known for its unique ties to the original “Rosie the Riveter,” Rose Will Monroe, who worked at a local bomber plant while soldiers were sent overseas during WWII. These resilient women are a tremendous part of Ypsilanti’s past.
