here are up to 7,000 homeless people in Atlanta. While many of them find shelter most nights, as many as 2,000 of them are considered “unsheltered.” That’s 2,000 men, women, and children living on the streets. Meanwhile, the number of people in homeless families is on the rise, making up one-fifth of the local homeless population. It is also estimated that another 20 percent of the homeless are veterans.
While there are places for these individuals to have meals or request shelter, they continue to lack the resources to find and keep a job, the only thing that will truly keep them off the streets. With this in mind, East Cobb resident and Chef Alex Reethof, along with his friend and fellow Chef Lake Dawson, started the non-profit, Gathering Industries. Chef Alex Reethof has been in the culinary/hospitality industry for over thirty years. He has taken management opportunities as well as hosted his own cooking show “Back to the Table.” With their expertise in both business and the culinary arts, Reethof and Dawson have more than enough knowledge to prepare the incoming workers as they journey through their second chance. Partnering with local faith-based homeless shelters, the “Gathering” works hard to give the homeless individuals of Atlanta a second chance by educating them in the culinary field to make them employable. “We believe in the ability for all of God’s creatures to contribute positively to this world and we have a firm understanding that the homeless are not hopeless . . . We teach them the skills so they can get a job,” says Alex. Reethof first began developing and looking into the idea around 2010. Then, in 2013, Reethof suffered from a life-threatening heart attack. “That’s when I was kind of laying there thinking, ‘I’m lucky to be here, so there’s got to be a good reason that I am still alive.’ . . . So I realized this [creating Gathering Industries] is my “assignment,” shares Alex. Since then, Gathering Industries has become a beacon of hope for those looking for another chance.

EAST COBB CHEF COOKS UP A NON-PROFIT TO HELP THE HOMELESS
Alex Reethoff coaches a culinary student Gathering Industries offers box lunches that have a sandwich, chips, cookie, and a drink. But this is no ordinary food. It’s not like what you’d get from a franchised sub shop. These are gourmet sandwiches made with fresh and delicious ingredients like the “European” sandwich: sliced Prague ham with cheddar chive cheese, Czech mustard, and arugula, served on a ciabatta roll—as described in the “Gathering” menu. Add the made-fromscratch cookies, such as Smores Kellogg Crunch Cookie, Confetti Sugar Cookie or the Double Chocolate Crunch Cookie. Gathering Industries is serving their delicious food at the BB&T Open from July 30 until August 7. East Cobb residents are encouraged to support Gathering Industries by ordering their boxed lunches. There is a ten box minimum and orders are subject to a delivery charge. They also offer platters and catering services. To place an order, call 404-316-1517 or email orders@gatheringindustries.org. For more information, you can visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gatheringindustries or their website at www.gatheringindustries.org Alex lives with his wife, Lori, in the Sibley Forest subdivision. They have four children: Ryan, 27; Cole, 24; Max, 21; and Emi, 15.

COBB COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES 2017 BUDGET
T
he Cobb County Board of Education approved a $986 million budget for Fiscal Year 2017 during its May 19, 2016 meeting, funding a full 180-day school year. The new budget includes 2.50% raises for all eligible employees, position adjustments and competitive salary adjustments for school and school support staff. Fiscal Year 2017 begins July 1, 2016 and runs through June 30, 2017. The FY2017 General Fund Budget includes $976,056,402 in revenue and $986,056,402 in expenditures. The budget is based on a projected enrollment of 113,613 students. As a result, the district plans to use $10 million in revenue reserve to offset the shortfall in revenue. After several years of economic downturn, the Cobb County School District is starting to experience a rebound in their two primary revenue streams – state funding and local property tax collections. State of Georgia Quality Basic Education (QBE) revenue provides approximately 51.18% of Cobb’s revenue from predetermined formulas. The revenue related to these formulas is calculated based on the total number of students. Local Property Tax Revenue generates approximately 48.30% of Cobb’s revenue. The value of property in Cobb is taxed using a tax rate called millage. The Board of Education is responsible for setting the millage tax rate each year. Taxpayers in Cobb have enjoyed
www.eastcobber.com
some of the lowest taxes in Metro Atlanta during this time period. “As stewards of taxpayer dollars, we have carefully and responsibly prepared the FY2017 Budget,” says Cobb County Schools’ Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. “This budget reflects the mission of the Cobb County School District to provide teaching Chris Ragsdale, Cobb County School and other appropriate Superintendent support. The mandates for improving education services coupled with the large student population place significant challenges upon the budget to maintain spending controls. The Budget is a prudent plan that balances the many needs of our students with the economic realities of our community.” Detailed information and documentation about the approved Fiscal Year 2017 Budget and development process are available under the Finance and Budget section of the Cobb County School District website: www.cobbk12.org.

EAST COBB PARENTS! BEFORE YOU FILL OUT YOUR CHILD’S EMERGENCY CARD THIS YEAR… Contrary to popular belief, a school emergency card will not protect your children from spending time in the hands of social services if something tragic happens to you. The emergency card only gives named contacts permission to pick your kid up if they are sick, not take Steve Worrall short-term custody of them East Cobb Estate if one or both parents are Planning Lawyer killed or incapacitated in an accident. Without a plan in place your kids could be taken into police custody or foster care. Parents should create an emergency plan prior to going to back to school so there is no confusion or legal headaches should tragedy strike. This plan can be created in 3 easy steps: 1. Legally (in writing) name short-term guardians for your kids. 2. Make sure your short-term guardians match those named on the school emergency card. 3. Make sure the babysitter knows what to do if you don’t return home. Creating a back-to-school emergency plan is so easy--- and something that will greatly pay off if a parent is injured or killed during school hours. The first few hours after an emergency are the most painful for a child, so it’s important for parents to make sure their kids spend that time with people they love and trust, rather than in the arms of the state. For information on creating your own Protective Parents Plan™ to safeguard your child, go to www.protectiveparentsplan. com or call Georgia Estate Plan: Worrall Law LLC, your East Cobb Estate Planning Lawyers, at 770-425-6060.

SAT STATS:
EAST COBB HIGH SCHOOLS The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and the American College Testing (ACT) are offered by The College Board several times during the year. These tests are not required by the state or school system, and are not administered by Cobb schools; however, most colleges and universities use SAT and/ or ACT scores in determining student admission. The SAT is used to predict a student’s potential for success in the first year of college and is required for admission to most colleges and universities. Most college-bound students take one or both of these tests during either their junior or senior year. The following chart displays SAT scores from the Class of 2015 (the last available scores released from Cobb County School District) attending East Cobb high schools. OUR STUDENTS, OUR SCHOOLS OUR RESPONSIBILITY
T
By Kristy H. Flowers, President, East Cobb County Council of PTAs
he East Cobb County Council of PTAs extends best wishes to all families of students attending the 35 schools that are members of our council. Our students and our families attend Kell, Lassiter, Pope, Sprayberry, Walton, or Wheeler High Schools and the feeder elementary and middle schools. We look forward to a wonderful year of learning!
We are especially excited to watch our local businesses, through the efforts of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, partner with Cobb and Marietta schools, Kennesaw State, Chattahoochee Technical College, Life University, and Georgia Highlands College to create the Cobb Workforce Partnership. The partnership is committed to establishing a pipeline of talented workers by aligning the needs of high demand careers with the education efforts at our schools.
Those of you who are members of our PTAs understand that our students and our schools are our responsibility! Our students and families contribute time and treasure to some of Georgia’s most active and passionate PTAs. The Council offers its deepest thanks to all of you who have worked with your school PTA/PTSA to ensure that the education provided to your children and the children of your neighbors and friends is a quality education. The Council encourages new families to join their school PTA and see the value that our members find through the many PTA activities and services that make East Cobb one of the most pleasant places to live.
We have a lot of work to do this school year. In November, you will have an opportunity to decide whether the state constitution should be amended to allow a state agency to take control of local schools. As an advocate of quality schools, your attention to this issue is important. In January, a new General Assembly will tackle tough budget issues as they consider how to fund healthcare, education, transportation, and other necessary services. We will be examining issues with the Milestone testing program, the question of whether standardized testing is emphasized at the cost of quality learning, and other policies that have both positive and negative impacts on our children’s future.
Your PTA provides and supports efforts to offer a variety of educational programming, communication tools, family-fun activities, and events to thank our teachers and school staff. Your PTA also has the tools to amplify your voice to advocate on behalf of all our children. We encourage you to sign up for training to communicate with elected officials and to urge them to provide the resources required to provide all of our children with a quality education that will in turn provide them with a chance to achieve their wildest dreams.
Our success is due to your hard work which empowers your children, your family, and your community. Our children and our schools are our responsibility! Your continued involvement will maintain the quality of living that all East Cobbers now enjoy! Kristy Flowers is the President of the East Cobb County Council of PTAs. She resides in Fox Hills subdivision with her husband, Jim, and two sons who attend Sope Creek Elementary and East Cobb Middle School.
The Council also thanks the many partners who work very hard to support our teachers, our principals, and you as we work to give our children an opportunity to prepare for careers in the not so distant future.

EAST COBBERS SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL POLICE
T
he Dallas shooting that killed five officers last month (the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks) spurred an outpouring of support for police throughout the country -- even here in East Cobb. Major Jerry Quan, head of East Cobb’s Precinct 4, thanked residents for the cards, letters, emails, cookies, cakes, sandwiches, and more they received. Quan says this was “unprecedented!” East Cobber Marguerite Pons, founder of St. Ann’s Widowed Helping Others (WHO) support group, invited Precinct 4 police to come to WHO’s dinner meeting and enjoy a free meal and some heartfelt appreciation. As Marguerite shares, “We had seven police show up and the people (about 80+) in attendance, gave them a standing ovation as they walked in. I had each police officer sit at prearranged tables so they could talk individually with people. It was super to see them laughing and at ease. On top of that, we gave them all of the leftover homemade Bar-B-Que to take home. Precinct Captain Cebula took some back to the precinct and said it didn’t last long!”

BOSS Sets the Stan The Saga Starts BOSS - Big Orange Sanitation Services (BossWaste.com) launched operations in East Cobb on July 1, 2016. We want to thank you for your encouragement and support. The response has been overwhelming! We, the proprietors, Scott and Jim, take pride in delivering a level of service East Cobbers haven’t seen in years. BOSS believes you shouldn’t have to put up with bad service and poor attitudes. BOSS can and will do better. This upstart wants to change how things are done for the better. Provide service a customer like you deserves. Deliver what we promise you. Words we live by and you can count on.
The price you pay for service is important. We understand that. We know competitors are going to resort to dropping their prices. But they should’ve done this years ago, not when you’re about to leave them. You have to ask yourself why you were considering leaving your current collections company in the first place? Our focus group said time and time again they were leaving because the service had declined and they felt ignored and underappreciated. When asked about price they said they’d rather pay a few dollars more for a company who was willing to go the extra mile in customer service, with simple things like answering the phone. BOSS is also thinking ahead about the garbage we produce and what to do with it. Every great idea starts somewhere, usually small. In 1879, Thomas Edison, in a small shop, and with no money, invented the light bulb. In 1919, Georgia’s own Coca Cola started out as a small syrup company with the help of Trust Company, which later became SunTrust Bank. Today, Coca Cola is a global company started from humble beginnings.
Everybody agrees that burying or burning garbage is a bad idea. If you bury it, it leaches and hurts humans, animals and vegetation. And if you burn it, you contribute to the problem of global warming. What to do? BOSS believes harnessing the energy in garbage is a great idea and the best way to preserve this planet for our children to enjoy. Let’s face it;
our garbage is slowly killing us. The current recycling effort is commendable, but not nearly enough. Less than 5% of the materials ever get recycled. It ends up in a landfill somewhere. We can do better. And we have a plan. Why not recycle everything we would normally put out at the curb and convert it into useable clean energy? Clean energy is good for you, Cobb County, and our children. One of the most frequent questions we encountered in focus groups with you, the residents of Cobb County, was; “do we have a recycling program”? Yes we do! Unlike the competition who cleverly meet the minimum requirements of the current rules by using the same truck they haul garbage in; we use dedicated trucks - not garbage trucks. Why? Garbage trucks, no matter how clean, contaminate the contents because of the residues from your household waste. So, we’ve invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy and use dedicated recycling trucks. Since the margins in hauling waste are so thin, we’re likely not to recoup this investment for a very long time, if ever. But we’re doing it because we’re more interested in the long term. Furthermore, we’re taking the recycling directly to the recycling center. You also may be interested to learn that we make no money from recycling. On the contrary, we have to pay to drop off the recycling. Then why would we be willing to change the way things are done, and lose money at the same time? It’s the foundation of our ground game in waste to energy and designed to show the world how one little company can set an example. We are sincerely interested in making Cobb County the best place to live in the U.S. and making Cobb a shining example for other counties to follow. Why? Because unlike other major waste companies that take your money and manage their operations from another state, the folks at BOSS live here, work here, shop here and their kids go to school here. Not only have we invested millions of dollars in this plan but we are home grown Georgians through and through. From the real estate we own to

ndard in Recycling in Cobb County the big orange equipment you’ll see on the street to the printers and phones and people in the offices, we live local, spend local and believe a dollar invested in Cobb County is in our best interest and yours too!
We are here to stay. Years in the planning brought us to the point we could initiate our master plan. We chose Cobb County because we live here. We promise we will not allow ourselves to be influenced or persuaded by our competitors, at any price. Some things are just too precious to sell off for money. We will not sell our children’s futures. After all, this planet was not passed on to us from our parents and founding fathers just to fetter away. It was only entrusted to us for our children to enjoy. BOSS has the know-how, the backbone, the financial capabilities and the engineering resources to make its plan a reality. But BOSS can’t do it alone. BOSS needs
your help. BOSS plans to lead the charge and make Cobb County a shining example of what can be achieved by forward-thinking communities coming together for positive change. Our environmental future depends on it. So, stay tuned for upcoming information about exactly how BOSS intends to change not only the garbage business, but also our environment. . .one county at a time, starting right here in Cobb County. Cobbers have never waited on anyone to get something done. They do it themselves. Today is no different. Let’s do it together. In the meantime, we promise you impeccable service, the safest equipment we can design and the lowest prices possible. Many thanks!

“In Italian, Bella Ragazza translates to mean “beautiful girl”. People sometimes say their dog is a “Velcro dog”, I tell people that Bella is a “superglue dog”. Whether we’re going hiking, camping, swimming, or snowboarding, Bella is always right next to me. Bella has hiked over the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Toas, NM and swam in the Rio Grande; she has attended mass and been blessed by a Priest; Bella has worked as a Therapy Dog for the Love on a Leash organization in Oxford, MS and walked through the library at the University of Mississippi to help calm students down during finals week; she has been a fraternity dog and happily played caretaker for its members. Bella is the best dog in the world not just because of the things she’s done and the places she’s been, but because she is the nicest, sweetest, most caring dog in the world. It’s amazing how she could go on a 10-mile hike and still have energy or curl up with someone in the floor and sit with them all day. She will do this funny thing if there are people a room, she will walk from person to person and put her head underneath your hand until you pet her and if you stop she will poke you with her nose! She is all around the best dog in the world and we would both be honored to have Bella as your next Pet-of-the-Month!”--Zachary Newsome

SAFEPATH PRESENTS ANNUAL GOOD EATIN’ GREAT CAUSE
n Thursday, September 15, SafePath Children’s Advocacy will present their annual fundraiser, Culinary Tour & Competition: Good Eatin’ Great Cause. From 6-10pm at the Cobb Galleria Center, event attendees will enjoy culinary treats featuring signature appetizers, entrees, desserts and drinks from the event’s restaurant participants, such as: Canoe, Chicken and the Egg, Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar, Fusco’s Via Roma, Henry’s Louisiana Grill, STK Atlanta,—and more! The public is invited to join MC Craig Lucie, of WSB-TV, and cooking competition host, Firehouse Chef Ryan McKay, two- time winner of the Good Eatin’ Great Cause cooking competition. In addition, local celebrity chefs will serve as mentors in a team cook-off competition between the Cobb County & Marietta Law Enforcement, Cobb County Sherriff’s Office, and the Marietta Fire Department. Be a part of an entertaining and energetic event with incredible food, great company, and an amazing “cooking-related” auction. The funds raised at

BACK-TO-SCHOOL DENTAL EMERGENCIES In my dental practice, I have seen many of my school-aged patients with front teeth painfully reshaped by monkey bars, the school’s tile floor, or even another child’s head. So what is a parent to do when you get that call from the school? TOOTH KNOCKED OUT: If your child’s entire permanent tooth has been knocked out, hold the tooth by the crown portion and rinse the root off if it is dirty. Do NOT scrub the tooth or remove any tissue fragments. If possible, try to place the tooth back into its socket. Otherwise, place the tooth into a cup of milk or hold it in your mouth next to the cheek to try to maintain a normal pH and keep the root from drying out. If the tooth is a primary (baby) tooth, do not try to reimplant it without your dentist’s recommendation as it may damage the underlying permanent tooth that is developing. In any case, see your dentist as soon as possible! The tooth may need to be stabilized with a splint, and root canal therapy (removal of the tooth nerve) may be necessary. BROKEN TOOTH: If a portion of your child’s tooth has broken, call your dentist immediately to see what his or her recommendations are. A tooth that has been chipped from a hard blow to the mouth can possibly suffer unseen nerve damage. Larger fractures of the
www.eastcobber.com
teeth may expose the underlying dentin, which can be sensitive to cold, heat, or air, or may even expose the nerve of the tooth requiring root canal treatment. Sometimes during the injury, the tooth will penetrate the lip. Your dentist will take x-rays to check for root fractures and make sure no pieces of the tooth have broken off inside your child’s lips, cheeks, or tongue. LOOSE TOOTH: If an injury only loosens a tooth, the tooth should still be evaluated by a dentist, even if it is just a baby tooth. Sometimes a tooth can be struck in such a way that the root or even the bone fractures beneath the gums which will make the tooth seem loose. Also, loosening the tooth can damage the nerve of a tooth. Even if no evidence of nerve damage is seen immediately, a loosened tooth will need continued monitoring over several months for the development of an abcess. Any abcess that forms over the injured root of a nerve-damaged baby tooth can potentially cause defects in the underlying permanent tooth. For most active children, it is almost impossible to prevent accidental injuries at school, so having a dentist available you can call on a moment’s notice is critically important. Be sure your entire family has a relationship with a dentist who examines your teeth and mouth every six months and call him or her immediately after any type of tooth trauma.

(WEIGHT) LOSER OF THE MONTH: DAWN QUINN
OPEN 7 DAYS
• Vegetarian • Gluten-Free • Living Foods
Occupation/Age: Real estate investor and Co-President of Walton PTSA, age 54 Weight Lost: 55 pounds, 6 dress sizes, and more than 20 inches since September 2015! Why She Lost It: Quinn, a busy mother and businesswoman, felt like she did not do anything for herself, and realized that by losing weight she would be doing herself a service by being healthier and able to live life to the fullest. She also found that “you are doing something for your family by being healthy; you’ll be able to be around for them longer.” How She Lost It: She joined Get in Shape for Women’s program, where she ate every 2-3 hours, tracked her food and water intake on the MyFitnessPal app, and attended workouts 4 days a week. Her healthy lifestyle change also included getting 8 hours of sleep, as well as daily mindfulness meditation and prayer. Favorite Healthy Foods: Weight Watchers vegetable soup, which she makes in bulk and freezes for a quick, healthy meal. For snacks, Quinn loves making a “Buddha Bowl” composed of light popcorn, coconut oil, and sea salt. What Keeps Her Motivated: The change she felt in her body! Once she started her healthy lifestyle, she looked and felt stronger, and found that she had more energy and stamina. The support of everyone at the gym was also a big motivator; both the trainers and other clients motivate and keep each other accountable. Lesson Learned: Don’t let weight loss be private! If you make your weight loss goals public, it is easier to stay on track because you have the support of your community.

How Do You Know You’re Meant To Be A Chiropractor? Why students from all backgrounds come to study chiropractic at Life University
Contemporary, scientifically-based chiropractic care focused on a natural approach to regaining health, improving neurological function and optimizing wellness and overall personal performance.
From the outside, chiropractic students at Life University have little in common: some just graduated with bachelor’s degrees while others are in their 30s, 40s, 50s; some experienced severe injuries that led them to explore chiropractic while others encounter their very first chiropractic adjustment when they get to campus; some grew up with the dream of becoming medical doctors while others hail from lifelong holistic lifestyles; they come from all over the nation and the world. What brings this diverse group of people to study chiropractic at Life University? They all feel an innate responsibility to help others. “I knew I wanted to do something bigger than myself. I wanted to be able to help people,” says Dr. Casen DeMaria, a 2011 graduate who runs a successful practice with her husband and father-in-law in Ohio. Dr. Nico Staples, class of 2014, hopes to transform the lives of his patients the way his own chiropractor impacted him — under chiropractic care at a whole-body wellness practice, Dr. Staples’ recurring headaches disappeared, his immune system greatly improved and he lost 55 pounds. He says, “[My chiropractor] absolutely transformed my entire life. I finally became the person I was. We all know that when you’re in pain, you’re not really who you are.” Whether students experience chiropractic care for themselves or are just curious about the
entrepreneurial nature of the profession, their searches often lead them to Life University. A Cobb County institution perhaps best known for its holiday lights show “Lights of LIFE,” Life University also houses the world’s largest single campus chiropractic college, considered to be the frontrunner in chiropractic thought leadership. With a 110-acre campus just 20 minutes from Atlanta, Life University offers a 16:1 student to faculty ratio, leading-edge technology and abundant campus life. For many students exploring a future in chiropractic, an event called LIFE Leadership Weekend is the turning point in their decision-making. This all-expenses paid trip to discover what Life University has to offer immerses prospective students and their guests in chiropractic philosophy, the classroom experience and potential career paths. Attendees also tour the campus and the city of Atlanta. For those seeking a hands-on path to changing lives, chiropractic is a great fit. Current student Marwyn Bhanderi says, “Chiropractic is multifaceted in how it will grow you: entrepreneur, public speaker, becoming a better person in general. It’s like learning 10 different careers in one.” Learn more about visiting Life University at LIFE.edu/VisitLIFE.
