Most baby boomers who recall the Kennedy assassination in Nov 22, 1963, describe it as the day America lost its innocence. September 11, 2001, marked a similar turning point for Americans—a defining moment in our history. Like many people, I remember exactly what I was doing when the planes crashed into the twin towers. I remember 9/11 as a distant observer, watching shocked and horrified as the events of the day played out on my television screen.

I was touched by the way New Yorkers responded to the crisis: helping each other to get out of the buildings, pulling strangers into storefronts and out of the dust cloud from the collapsing buildings, helping move people away from ground zero, and lining up to give blood. Even now, while typing these words my mind conjures up images of the heroic police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel who sacrificed so much for so many on 9/11 and the uncertain minutes, hours, days, weeks and months following the attacks. My respect for these everyday heroes has evolved into a deep admiration. Hence, my decision to photograph the Cobb police officers that keep the EAST COBBER Parade a safe event for the 2,000 participants and 10,000 parade watchers and festival goers. Putting Cobb County Police on the front cover is my way to honor their service.

On this tenth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the crash of an airplane in a Pennsylvania field, we remember and honor the nearly 3,000 people who died that day with a National Day of Service and Remembrance. As President Obama said in a 9/11 speech last year, we should focus “not on the human capacity for evil, but the human capacity for good; not the desire to destroy, but the impulse to save and to serve and to build.”

That is what the EAST COBBER focuses on this month-- and every month: “the human capacity for good.” By featuring stories about the good works of our East Cobb neighbors--from Ryan Ernstes, a teenager that created the Hot Lips Hustle 5K to Joseph Pond creating the Backyard Chicken Alliance to Erica Rountree’s mission trip, the EAST COBBER shines a light on our East Cobb neighbors’ intentions “to save, to serve and/or to build.”

The 16th annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival, to be held on September 10, is another way to showcase all that is good here in East Cobb County. East Cobbers—Americans—of all persuasions, all religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds come together in peace and goodwill, showing the best this community has to offer.

What a great way to defeat the evil of 9/11, and remind each other of our “capacity for good.” For 9/11, I remember, and I will not forget.

September 10: A Day for East Cobbers To Celebrate

The 16th annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 10. The day’s festivities will be kicked off by the EAST COBBER Parade at 10am. The annual parade aims to build a sense of community and reinforce East Cobb County’s status as one of the best places to live in the metro Atlanta area.

Floats, high school marching bands and a cornucopia of East Cobb groups will march down the one-mile parade route. Starting at 10am, the parade participants will march from Mount Bethel Elementary School’s parking lot, travel south on Johnson Ferry Road, and then turn into the Fountains of Olde Towne shopping center.

Immediately following the EAST COBBER Parade, at approximately 11am, the EAST COBBER Festival will be held in the Fountains of Olde Towne shopping center (736 Johnson Ferry Road) parking lot. The Festival offers East Cobb County residents an opportunity to come together and enjoy an afternoon of local entertainment, carnival games

and good food. Booths will be set up to showcase everything from jewelry to local schools to books. East Cobb kids will have plenty to do at the EAST COBBER Festival from getting their face painted to taking a chance at a carnival game to hopping in a moonwalk. Festival goers will also be treated to food from East Cobb restaurants and civic clubs.

Upper Roswell Road) will be closed 9:45am to 11:15am to allow 2,000 parade participants and 100 entries to march in the 16th Annual EAST COBBER Parade.

The EAST COBBER Parade will be staged at Mount Bethel Elementary School parking lot (1210 Johnson Ferry Road). Beginning at 10am, parade participants will march south on Johnson Ferry Road, and then, after about one mile, turn into the Fountains of Olde Towne Shopping Center, 736 Johnson Ferry Road. As a safety measure, the Cobb County Police Department will shut down Johnson Ferry Road--both northbound and southbound lanes--from Roswell Road to Lower Roswell Road. This stretch of Johnson Ferry Road will be closed to traffic from 9:45am to 11:15am. Princeton Lakes Drive will also be closed from 8am to 10:30am. Woodlawn Road will be not be closed – but traffic will be affected.

Cobb County Department of Transportation will be setting up road detours at the intersections of Indian Hills Parkway & Upper Roswell Road and Indian Hills Parkway & Lower Roswell Road. Road detours will also be set up at the intersections of Timber Ridge Road & Upper Roswell Road and Timber Ridge Road & Lower Roswell Road.

Star Wars Troop to March in EAST COBBER Parade

For so many baby boomers, the Star Wars theme connects us, and we remember Saturday movies and sleep overs with friends and dreaming of Jedi Knights. Some fans hear the Star Wars theme and consider it a calling and embrace it as a mission. That’s where Vader’s FIST 501st Garrison and the Rebel Legion come in, and do they come in. They come in fully costumed, armed and dangerously on the verge of having too much fun. They “troop”, meaning they gather together, at parades, malls and wherever they’re invited to bring joy to children’s faces, joy to those who are children at heart and to support charitable organizations.

East Cobbers, Pana Thitaram and Lynn Duffield, are serious about their costumes. Pana is a “’96 Walton grad and a Sand Trooper with the 501st Lynn “troops” with the Rebel Legion. Members of the 501st (the “Bad” guys, i.e. Darth Vader) and the Rebel Legion (the “Good” guys, i.e. Princess Leia) painstakingly recreate costumes from every Star Wars episode, cartoon and game, with Storm Troopers spending about $1,200, to Darth Vader between $3,000 and $4,000, and Bobo Fete topping at $6,000. And that doesn’t include Light Sabers, E-11 Rifles or DC-15 and T-21 weapons carried to complete the look. These costumes and, as the various Troopers and Clones call them, “armor” are all about honoring Star Wars creativity and wonder.

“Trooping” since 2001, Pana also enjoys the “Hothlanta Rebels”, named for the planet Hoth, featured in Episode #5.

This group does not costume but meets for movie marathons and discussions about collectibles and trivia. Pana loves the Toys for Tots appearances and added that the best part of costuming is seeing the children’s smiling faces. His SCAD degree in animation and visual effects feeds the fantasy role. Pana said, “Wearing armor stems from loving Star Wars as a kid and it keeps me young.” Contrary to the stereotype, there is a woman behind this warrior. Rebecca also loves Star Wars and has been tempted to try the armor on, bucket (helmet) and all. Pana has trooped with Lynn Duffield and added that she is an amazing costumer.

Lynn earned her first Girl Scout Badge in sewing and loves the craft. She found her Star Wars calling in “Phantom Menace” where finally there were female Jedi. Lynn has created 3 Star Wars costumes and has enjoyed “trooping” in parades and at charitable events. Whether it’s Boo at the Zoo or DragonCon, Lynn dons her Mon Mothma (a Rebel Leader) costume and reveals her inner Jedi. “My challenge is to make the costumes as close as possible to what is seen on the screen, but mostly it’s fun, and it’s a chance to be somebody else for a while.” Lynn added that she looks forward to expanding her costume wardrobe.

Pana and Lynn will march in this year’s EAST COBBER Parade along with fellow Star Wars’ rebel forces, droids, bounty hunters, Jedi Knights, Imperial Stormtroopers and Darth Vader. For more information about the 501st Garrison, visit: www.ga501st.com.

Drumming and Strumming

As long as there have been cities there have been suburbs, or so it seems. And all too often, the suburbs get a bad rap – strip malls, fences and Friday nights filled with potluck dinners and high school football. But four East Cobb dads are taking back the ‘burbs’, one party at a time.

In 2007, GE employees (and East Cobb residents) Hector Chaviano and Kurt Waldner discovered they had a shared hobby – rocking out in their spare time. They got together for a couple of jam sessions. Kurt brought a buddy from church who played guitar (Randy Agnew) who, in turn, asked his drummer friend (Keith Lindsay) to come along. At the first group session, Chaviano said the group “just clicked,” and Suburban Angst was born.

Fast forward four years and the four-man band rocks harder than ever. They play regular gigs around town, including O’Shaughnessy’s on Shallowford Road and at East Cobb Park. Suburban Angst is also available for private events and parties and will be featured at the EAST COBBER Festival on September 10, 2011.

They play a diverse set of well-known alternative favorites, covers from the 80s, 90s and 00s and even some deeper cuts to keep things interesting.

“One of the cool things about us is it just keeps clicking,” said Chaviano. “Everyone (in the band) understands we all have real priorities (like jobs and family).”

With full-time jobs, wives and kids ranging in age from elementary to college students, the band members strive to shake up their mini-van driving suburban existence and have a good time.

“It’s a hobby, but we take it seriously. We try to play well,” Chaviano said.

The Northwest Atlanta Bead Society (NWABS) is a notfor-profit organization open to anyone with an interest in beads. It is dedicated to the study of beads and beading techniques.

NWABS members are beaders at all levels of expertise so whether you are a seasoned veteran or a new beader, you are welcome to join. They offer monthly instructions/projects taught by members or a local expert, quarterly bead challenges, and social networking. They also encourage support of local bead shops and work with them in conjunction with their bead challenges.

“I started attending the NWABS meetings after I took the class and discovered that there were others that shared my fascination with taking a handful of beads and making something beautiful with them. I’ve learned so much from my fellow beaders. Everyone has always been so willing to

share information and opinions, and I feel I have become a better beader from their assistance and influence,” says NWABS member Sylvia.

“I took a series of classes and attended a few bead retreats and found that there were others who enjoyed beading as much as I did. Strong friendships have developed and I’m learning something new from this great group of people all the time. I look forward to the monthly meetings and seeing the creativity of our members and anticipate what I will learn next,” says Mary, a NWABS member.

Sandy Plains Cougars Red 2011 Season Review

Twelve kids and five coaches came together in the summer of 2011 and represented your community and local Sandy Plains Park in East Cobb/Marietta by playing a little baseball. All Stars baseball, that is. It actually all started in late April with tryouts, player selection and our first team meeting. From then on, there were practices. LOTS of practices. And coaching. And drills. But most of all life lessons and friendships.

This group of eight-year olds came together as a team for the very first time and played their hearts out the entire

season, which stretched into the scorching hot days of late July, including road trips to Rome, GA and Southaven, MS. When it was all said and done, these fine boys compiled a record of 15-14 while really turning it on late in the year with an 11-and-5 record to end the season, including a championship trophy in the Acworth Summer Slam Tournament, and a one-time ranking of 11 out of approximately 60 teams in the final tournament of the year - The World Series.

Bobby Cox Inducted Into Braves Hall of Fame

The Atlanta Braves honored Bobby Cox, an East Cobb resident, on August 12 by inducting him into the Braves Hall of Fame retiring his uniform number. The induction took place at the Braves Hall of Fame Luncheon at the Omni Hotel at the CNN Center during the day and the uniform number retirement occured in a pre-game ceremony later that night before the Braves took on the Chicago Cubs.

Cox’s #6 was the eighth Braves uniform number to be retired, joining Hank Aaron (44), Eddie Mathews (41), Dale Murphy (3), Phil Niekro (35), Warren Spahn (21), and Greg Maddux (31), and Tom Glavine (47). The Braves also retired the number 42 along with all teams in Major League Baseball to honor Jackie Robinson.

Cox joined Hank Aaron, Bill Bartholomay, Lew Burdette, Skip Caray, Del Crandall, Ralph Garr, Tom Glavine, Tommy Holmes, Ernie Johnson, David Justice, Herman Long, Bill Lucas, Greg Maddux, Eddie Mathews, Dale Murphy, Kid Nichols, Phil Niekro, John Sain, Paul Snyder, Warren Spahn, Ted Turner, and Pete Van Wieren in the Braves Hall of Fame.

Bobby Cox is a former Major League Baseball third baseman and manager. He first led the Atlanta Braves from 1978 to 1981, and then managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 1982 to 1985. He later rejoined the Braves in 1985 as a general manager. He moved back to the manager’s role during the 1990 season and stayed there until his retirement following the 2010 season. He led the Atlanta Braves to the World Series championship in 1995. Bobby holds the all-time record for ejections in Major League Baseball with 158, a record previously held by John McGraw. He ranks fourth on the Baseball All-time Managerial Wins list.

Why Should I Join PTA?

School is back in session, you’ve made it through Meet and Greets, Open Houses, Back to School Picnics and the stress of the first two weeks of homework. Your child has a new lunch box and back pack or a new set of binders and money on their lunch account. Activities have started back up and you’ve written checks for everything from a cheer uniform to an instrument rental to yearbooks and so on and so on. Have you written a check yet though for your PTA membership?

Every year, I hear someone say, “Why should I join PTA?” Let me tell you why! First of all, PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. It is a group of parents, teachers, community members, cafeteria workers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, students and so many more individuals working towards the goal of advocating for our children and improving their lives. PTA today continues the tradition started 100 years ago, wishing for every child to be represented by one voice.

By joining your child’s PTA, regardless of their grade or age, you can benefit greatly and provide your child and other children with additional opportunities for growth throughout the school year. Here are a few highlights of PTA Member Benefits:

> Get Connected and Discover Great Resources. PTAs often have websites and/or newsletters that keep you apprised of things going on in school, including ways you can volunteer and programs being offered to benefit the family unit, not just the children. Some schools have “Lunch and Learn” programs for parents while others do “Parent Education Nights”. Take advantage of these opportunities! Connect with other parents and use the resources offered to learn about today’s youth and the challenges they face.

Your child’s PTA offers educational, social and family programs aimed towards bettering the lives of children. PTA sponsored programs can allow children to explore other countries, experiment with healthy eating and exercise, explore science in different and unique ways, and offer many other opportunities that these children may not otherwise have.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

As Cobb County’s students head back to school this fall, the Cobb County Public Library System wants to make sure that all children have the most important school supply of all – a library card. Owning a library card provides students the resources they need to compete academically. The Cobb County Public Library System provides students free access to databases of news articles, encyclopedias and test preparation materials, as well as homework help and resources. In addition, public libraries are the number one access point for free Internet access, an important resource for families without access at home when 96 percent of school districts require students to use the Internet to complete their homework.

Library Card Sign-up Month, held each September, is a time when libraries across the country celebrate the value of the library card. Activities at the Cobb County Public Library System during Library Card Sign-up Month include book discussion groups, story times, workshops, movie festivals, and more. Recipe of the Month: Easy Banana Bread

4 lg. eggs

1 (18.25-oz.) pkg. yellow cake mix without pudding

1 (3.4 oz.) pkg. vanilla instant pudding

1 c. water

¼ c. vegetable oil

3 bananas, mashed

½ c. chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Beat eggs at medium speed with an electric mixer until thick and pale. Add cake mix, pudding, water and vegetable oil, mixing well. Stir in bananas and nuts. Pour batter into two greased and floured 8-1/2 x 4-1/2 x 3-inch loaf pans or one Bundt cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until a wooden toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes and remove from pans.

East Cobber Creates Backyard Chicken Alliance

Joseph Pond added to his pet family in April of this year. Along with 2 dogs, 4 cats, 2 gerbils, 2 cockatiels and a parakeet, Mr. Pond brought in 13 hens to a newly built poultry palace at his East Cobb home. Committed vegetarians, his wife, 10-year-old daughter and 12-yearold son welcomed the additions. The family was excited to have the beautiful pets that would eventually provide fresh eggs. Currently, 5 of the hens are old enough to lay eggs, including an Ameraucana, a breed that lays blue eggs.

As dietary trends prompt members of the community to eat fresh organic foods, “do-it-yourself” enthusiasts are bringing back backyard chicken coops. In July, Pond formed the Backyard Chickens Alliance of Cobb County (www.backyardchix.org) to educate the general public, share chicken raising information and help promote the message that “chickens are not for everyone, but everyone has the right to own chickens”. The alliance brings together like-minded people that want the legalization of backyard chicken coops in Cobb County.

In September, Pond faces a county variance hearing since his chickens do not meet Cobb County code that restricts “livestock” to be kept on a minimum of 2 acres. Pond contends that Chapter 10, which addresses pets, applies to keeping backyard chickens. Mr. Pond added, “I hope that my advocacy and work to modify county code restrictions help other people that currently keep the birds.”

His right-hand advocate is his daughter, Madeline. She has taken up the chicken cause as a Girl Scout project to earn her Silver Award and hopes to find a permanent solution to this community issue by helping to change the county code. With visits from 2 county commissioners and a commission hearing this month, Pond hopes to find a compromise that will help backyard chicken owners throughout the county. Pond and the “Alliance” will host a “Chickens Are Pets Too” media center at the September 10th East Cobber Festival that aims to educate the public that chickens are more than livestock.

Hot Lips Hustle 5K Helps Raise Funds

Most of us take our ability to open and close our mouths, eat, and smile for granted. One in 700 babies are born with cleft lip and palate defects (splitting) that not only deform their faces and make eating difficult, but lead to them being shunned and even abandoned. A local East Cobb girl has found a funway to help these children.

The founder of the Hot Lips Hustle 5K, Ryan Ernstes, who began her own life with a series of grueling surgeries to correct her cleft lip, says, “I realized how lucky I was to have parents who could pay for my surgery.” So, at the age of 12,

generous-hearted Ryan decided to help those with cleft lips and no money for the corrective operations. She and her mom devised the catchy name for the race and; her crosscountry coaches and classmates from The Walker School helped promote the event.

Ryan’s seventh annual race on September 17 is your chance to help this enterprising Furman University pre-med student: she’s already funded a total of 147 surgeries by The Smile Train, a global non-profit (www.smiletrain.org). Ryan chose them “because most of their proceeds go toward actual surgeries and they train local doctors.”

Ryan is being recognized for this unique fundraising event by becoming a finalist in a Ladies Home Journal volunteerism contest. See http://www.wetv.com/we-volunteerawards/ and help her out by voting!

Rain or shine, the Hot Lips Hustle 5K race is September 17, 2011. Pre-register through www.hotlipshustle5k.com for $17 until September 7, or pay $22 thereafter. You can even show up and register on race day. Ryan encourages all types of people to come: runners, walkers, those who have never done a 5K before. She says, “It’s a lot of fun!”

Support children’s smiles: Run in the Hot Lips Hustle 5K on September 17. Bring the whole family, even the dog! There are 86 possible running trophies, even three “top dog” trophies! Ryan said, “We are big dog lovers.” In fact, she added, “We had 50 dogs last year.” All participating dogs get medals. Plus, whether fast or slow, each human could win something from the raffle.

The race location is Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Marietta, at 2922 Sandy Plains Road in East Cobb. Arrive at 7:30am.: the flat 5K race up and down Ebenezer Road starts at 8am. Come help children with this birth defect to smile!

Special Election Set for September 20

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced August 5th receipt of Governor Nathan Deal’s Writ of Election setting Tuesday, September 20, 2011, as the date for the special election to fill the vacancy in State House District 43. The seat became open after the death of State Rep. Bobby Franklin. Mr. Franklin was found in his home July 26 dead of a heart attack at the age of 56.

Secretary Kemp set candidate qualifying for Monday, August 15, through Wednesday, August 17, 2011. Candidates qualified in the Elections Division of the Office of Secretary of State, 802 West Tower, 2 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, SE, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. The qualifying fee was $400.

The following East Cobbers qualified for this special election:

• John Carson, 40, SunTrust accountant.

• Robert Lamutt, 55, former State Senator, real estate investor.

• Don Hill, 69, retired, former chair of the Cobb County GOP.

• Roy C. Barnes, 81, retired.

• Dr. Geraldine Wade, 57, healthcare information technology consultant.

The election for State House District 43 will occur in northeastern Cobb County. It is estimated there are 34,598 voters in District 43.

The election is a non-partisan special election with no party primary. However, each candidate’s party affiliation, if any, will be listed on the ballot. A run-off election, if needed, will be held Tuesday, October 18, 2011.

Voters can request an absentee ballot from their county registrar’s office through the close of business on Friday, September 16, 2011. Absentee ballots must be returned to the county registrar’s office by the close of polls on Election Day. To download an absentee ballot request form, please visit www.sos.ga.gov/elections.

Polls will be open from 7a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.

Citizens must be registered to vote by Monday, August 22, 2011, to participate in the September 20, 2011, special election. Voter registration forms can be obtained at any county registrar’s office or from the Secretary of State’s website: www.sos.ga.gov/elections.

Lassiter Grad Gets Top Prize in “So You Think You Can Dance?” TV Show

Living up to lofty expectations has almost become second nature for Melanie Moore. The 19-year-old’s yearbook superlative reads “Most Likely to Become Famous,” a designation given to the current Fordham University student by her peers at Lassiter High School’s Class of 2010. Her infectious smile and upbeat personality probably had a lot to do with her winning homecoming queen, too.

It’s only fitting that the East Cobb native would continue to win even more votes after high school—little did she know those votes would come in the form of national recognition for her dance talent.

Not only did Melanie become a breakout star on this summer’s hit show, ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ she won the title of ‘America’s Favorite Dancer’ by an overwhelming percentage of the 11 million votes cast before last month’s finale on Fox.

Though the grand prize package is impressive, including $250,000 and an ad for Gatorade, it could never measure up to the judges’ accolades throughout the season that put her in the national spotlight. Lady Gaga said Melanie was

her favorite dancer of the season and guest judge Kenny Ortega, famed choreographer of the classic dance film Dirty Dancing, told her he would “push to the front of the line to work with [her].”

Last month, Lassiter and Melanie’s East Cobb dance studio, Rhythm Dance Center, came together to host a finale viewing party in the high school’s gym. Over 1,500 fans and friends brought signs and wore “Vote Melanie!” t-shirts to show support for their hometown finalist.

Rhonda Webb, Melanie’s history teacher at Lassiter, helped organize the event as a way to support her former student, who she believes is an important part of the local community. “The community can really get behind Melanie—she’s a good student and has always been a motivating person,” said Webb.

Sitting in front of the 26-foot screen in the gym, the crowd watched anxiously as the two-hour show came to a close and waited impatiently for the winner to be announced. Unfortunately, the satellite signal cut out during the actual announcement, but once it was reconnected the crowd cheered and yelled, as it was easy to see Melanie was crowned the winner.

Melanie will return to Atlanta for the ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ tour at the Gwinnett Arena on September 20. Her sister, Megan Moore, has big hopes for her younger sibling. “After the tour, we hope she gets recognition from the dance world… and a job!”

Mission Trip Brings More Meaning To My Life

When people find out that I took a mission trip with Project 82 (link: www.project82kenya.com) to Kenya this summer, their first question is usually “What did you do there?” It’s a great question, but I typically find myself at a loss for an answer. What did I do there? I know I got up early in the morning every day, and I fell into my bed at night physically and emotionally exhausted and yet too excited to sleep. I know that I met people, both from Kenya and my own hometown, whose love for others amazed me. I know that I held the hands of countless beautiful children, whose smiles spoke of an inner joy that defied explanation. What did I do there? Perhaps the better question for me to try to answer is, “What did God do there?”

One of the things God did was to teach me things about myself that I have a hard time seeing when I’m living my abundant life in East Cobb. I learned that I often make an idol out of my comforts. As I lived among those who are, by necessity, more focused on providing the basics of life than the “extras,” I realized just how much of my life revolves around ensuring that my family is comfortable.

There are the predictable, simple comforts that I missed in Kenya: reliable hot showers, drinking copious amounts of clean water straight from the tap and living in blissful ignorance of how to use a latrine (that’s a “hole in the ground” for the uninitiated!).

But there are more complex comforts that I cling to as well. I find great comfort in the knowledge that my children are receiving a great education, with adequate supplies and materials. I dearly love knowing that if they get sick or hurt, I can obtain excellent, immediate medical care for them. I am comforted to know that my biggest obstacle at mealtimes is trying to get them to eat something nutritious, not worrying about when I’ll be able to feed them again.

I learned that I am supremely comforted by the fact that my kids have a mom and a dad to love and protect them.

I wonder what my children think when they observe me spending so much time and effort ensuring their comfort, sometimes walking that razor thin line between being grateful for our blessings and acting as though we deserve them. Have they begun to believe that chasing comfort and ease is “the thing?” I worry about what would happen to them if they lost it all.

My hope is that my girls will base their lives on something more lasting than worldly comfort and conveniences. I hope they will center their lives on the love of the Comforter himself, the one Jesus promised would come to us when He left the Earth. If they do, I know they will be able to both draw on and pass on that enduring, permanent comfort that has been promised to them, no matter their circumstances.

There are 3 million orphans in Kenya. Three million! That’s about the size of the population of metro Atlanta the year I moved here in 1995. In Kenya, in the midst of its stunning beauty, a child is orphaned every two minutes. HIV AIDS claims the lives of many parents, and in Molo, where I visited, many of the kids were orphaned or partially orphaned by 2007 post-election violence. They came into Molo as part of a large swell of refugees, and the kids were left there after the adults returned to their homes. I met some of those sweet kids on my trip. They held my hands, and they blessed me with their smiles and giggles. They showed me how to make magazine beads. They introduced me to their siblings. They welcomed me into their schools. We sang together. They shyly shared their personal dreams with me. We prayed for each other. And I couldn’t help falling in love.

Project 82 was founded by a caring group of East Cobb residents who have fallen in love with the people of Kenya. Through sponsorships and mission trips, they offer the opportunity for people in our area to personally connect with a child halfway around the world who needs someone. A child who has seemingly lost everything, but who has everything to live for. Who will take care of children who find themselves alone in the world? Who will teach them about what’s really important? It has to be us. We can do that for each other. And that is the biggest comfort of all.

Cobb EMC Election Dates Set

A new day is dawning for Cobb EMC members. After years of disenfranchisement and an endless tunnel of lawsuits, indictments and setbacks, we are poised to revive our democratic rights. On Friday, August 12, Cobb County Superior Court Judge Stephen Schuster announced a Special Meeting and election dates!

On September 17, 10:15am, at Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta, members will be voting on the format of elections, which is crucial to ensure that we have fair and open elections. We’ll also vote on a resolution regarding pensions for board members.

Following that meeting, there will be three sets of elections (mark your calendars!):

• Areas 1, 6, 7, and 10 on November 12, 2011

• Areas 2, 3 and 9 on February 18, 2012

• Areas 4, 5, and 8 on May 12, 2012

We would not be so close to bringing open, transparent leadership to Cobb EMC without all of you who have already signed our petition or taken other actions on the campaign. Now it’s time for the big push. Like any election campaign, it’s going to take lots of volunteers to elect accountable candidates. We’ve come so far in the past year, and now we’re so close! Tell your friends, neighbors and colleagues who are Cobb EMC members to attend our meeting on the 17th and vote.

One of the many issues addressed last month was that there is no limit on the board’s spending to re-elect its chosen slate (as far as we know, that means to re-elect itself). With rumors that they’ve engaged high-profile campaign

consultant Tom Perdue, we know that electing reform candidates to the board will not be easy and the current Board will not surrender without a fight. Please consider supporting the reform campaign by volunteering, or with a financial contribution. Judge Schuster lectured the board for about twelve minutes about its collective effort to stretch out the settlement process and further disenfranchise members. From its attempt to “weasel” around the 2008 legal settlement in order to rehire Dwight Brown and keep him as a consultant, to the Board’s inability to schedule timely elections, Judge Schuster set them in their place.

Schuster is also requiring Board members to attend monthly meetings in his office with the liquidating trust responsible for shutting down Cobb EMC’s many unsuccessful for-profit subsidiaries. “It’s just so we can all have a full understanding of why, 2 ½ years later, certain things haven’t been liquidated,” Schuster said, with the Board sitting in silence.

A big thank-you to Judge Schuster for his conscientious actions to bring Cobb EMC’s entrenched leadership to justice. And a big thank you to all of you: finally, with your support, we are putting the past behind us and moving forward toward transparency, accountability and responsible leadership to the Board of Directors. The finish line is in sight, and we’ll come out ahead if each of us contributes what we can.

Last month, our son Scott left Fort Carson for his one year tour of duty in Afghanistan. We are not sure of his exact location but we do know he will be in the Sagin River Valley, an extremely difficult area. He is with the 576th Engineering Company and his role will be road clearance. Over the next year, we ask that you put Scott in your daily prayers for his safe return to his family and friends. I know he will love, support and feel the prayers. He has a tough road ahead of him but we know he is extremely proud to be an American fighting soldier and serving his country. Please ask God to watch over him and the men in his company and provide comfort and guidance through this journey. Once Scott gets to Kandahar, he will be able to let us know his address and we will pass that along to anyone who would like to write or send a care package. He will not have any access to email or phone since he will be stationed is in a really remote area. May God bless you all in advance for your support and prayers.

Civitans Seek Donations for their Annual Fundraiser

On Wednesday, October 19th, the East Cobb Civitan Club will partner with the “Friends for the East Cobb Park, Inc.” to hold their 20th Annual Silent Auction and Wine Tasting. This is their largest fund raising event of the year. Its success depends on the generous support of businesses that are willing to make donations of cash for sponsorships and/ or merchandise & services to be auctioned. The proceeds from their auction will help support the “The East Cobb Park” and “Camp Big Heart” - as well as scholarships and many other community projects for the aged, homeless, handicapped and needy. Cobb Commemorates

Ten Year Anniversary of 9/11

This fall will mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The World Trade Center’s main towers, often referred to as the “Twin Towers,” were destroyed on September 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked commercial airplanes and flew them into the buildings. Nearly 3,000 people were killed that day, during attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on United Airlines Flight 93.

The ten-year anniversary of September 11 attacks will be commemorated in Cobb County with the following special events:

> The kiwanis Club of Marietta will remember the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with its Field of Flags installation. As one of the largest commemorative events in the nation, a flag will be placed in Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park for each life lost on September 11. On Saturday, September 10, the processional of flags will travel about one mile from Grace Community Church on Kennesaw Avenue to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Line up begins at 7am and the parade starts at 8am, rain or shine. On Sunday, September 11, the memorial service in remembrance of the lives lost begins at 7:30am. The guest speaker will be Lt. Gov. Seniors Learn Game of Skill

For Patti O’Hagan, Bridge is a game of skill, but like any other game, it is also a game of luck. “You are at the mercy of the cards you are dealt. THEN your skill becomes the rule,” says Patti.

Patti, Bridge instructor of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University, grew up watching her mother play Bridge with her friends. When she was old enough to play, Patti was instantly hooked on the game.

Bridge was derived from an old game called ‘Whist’ at the end of the 19th century and has since evolved into a social delight for many societies. There are two ways to play Bridge. Duplicate Bridge requires only one partner and Contract Bridge lets you switch partners throughout the plays. “I teach Contract Bridge,” says Patti. “I want to get as many folks to the table as possible. By changing partners, you will be interacting with others more. I call this Social Bridge!”

OLLI offers Bridge courses for beginners and advance beginners. “My courses attract beginners who have never even seen the game played before and those who ‘majored in Bridge in college,’” says Patti.

“Patti has made learning Bridge a real fun experience for the OLLI students. They love taking her courses and keep coming back,” says Michelle Girage, Assistant Director of OLLI.
