PUBLISHER’S NOTE As summer comes to an end and kids start heading back to school, the discussion among friends often turns to, “What did you do this summer?” Teachers usually design a writing assignment around the same topic. Summer memories come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. Many East Cobbers take a week long family vacation, or maybe you lounged around the pool with neighborhood friends or were busy with a travel baseball league. Well, this summer, I decided to run for political office. From May 24 until July 31, I ran for State Representative-House District 45, which covers most of East Cobb. So, instead of heading down to Florida this summer, I, (and my family) spent the summer fundraising, walking neighborhoods, and attending events. I wish I had better news to report but I lost to the incumbent. But what an incredible experience! There are a lot of people that complain about government and lament that the only people holding office, from the local level to the national, are a bunch of corrupt bums. But it will stay that way if we, the people, confine our political activity to ranting on the couch. By running for political office, I took a stand and had my voice and other neighbors’ voices heard. While being a candidate was physically and mentally challenging, it was also a personally rewarding experience. Regardless of the outcome, I am extremely proud of what was accomplished. Against all odds, a political outsider–a mother of 3 with a small business, I ran on a message that our representation at the state house should be better and our state rep should serve the people, and not the lobbyists or the good ole boys at the State House. Let’s hope the incumbent hears our voices and concerns and begins to serve our exceptional community in the manner in which it deserves. Life is too short, and time is too precious to dwell on what might have been. And that is why I will continue to work my heart out for a better East Cobb, maybe not as a State Representative, but as editor and publisher of the EAST COBBER magazine.

The Rotary Club of East Cobb is an organization for active or retired business and community leaders whose members are committed to serving others. The Rotary International motto is “Service Above Self,” and our local chapter takes this seriously. For the past 25 years, East Cobb Rotarians have supported hundreds of charitable causes and service projects.
The group recently hosted its 7th annual Dog Days Run, a 5K run and 1 mile walk, held in August on Johnson Ferry Road. More than 740 runners participated in the race this year, and the money they raise goes to local charities like Cobb Family Resources, WellStar Community Hospice, Camp Kudzu for Juvenile Diabetes, Camp Hope, Camp Sunshine for children with cancer and Canine Assistance. Member volunteers also present AIDS Awareness programs at local high schools and mentor elementary school students.

AVOID BEING STRANDED! PREVENT A BREAKDOWN WITH THESE TIPS Back to school is here! It’s time to get back into Atlanta traffic! But before you start your daily commute, you should make sure your car is prepared for the trip and that it won’t leave you stranded on the side of the road. Here’s a quick checklist:
TIRES Check all five tires, yes five. Make sure you always check the spare tire to see if it is in good condition. Check the air pressure of all the tires, and make sure they are properly inflated. Inspect the tread depth and overall condition of the tires. You also want to inspect for signs of uneven wear and damage to the sidewalls. Tires with insufficient tread or that are worn out are more likely to encounter problems and leave you with a flat – or blowout.
BATTERY The summer heat takes its toll on your battery, breaking it down internally. Most car batteries have a life of three to five years, but this depends on climate and vehicle usage. The battery terminals are also important to check. If there is corrosion it could lead to insufficient electrical power. Before heading out on the road make sure your battery is able to get you there.
WIPER BLADES Wiper blades and washer fluid are also important to ensure you can see clearly. Check your wiper blades for cracks or wear. Worn and cracked blades will not properly clean the windshield. The rubber inserts on wiper blades typically last 6 to 12 months.
COOLANT Coolant is important because it prevents your engine from overheating. The number one cause of roadside breakdown is cooling system failure. Coolant that operates in hot temperatures breaks down over time, leaving your engine susceptible to overheating. It is important to check your coolant level. Next time you have your coolant level checked ask if you need a coolant flush. A coolant flush is the process of removing the excess and waste liquids that build up in the cooling system of your vehicle and replacing it with new coolant.

Local Counselors Offer Refuge from Life’s Stress
Budget cuts, new curriculum standards, redrawn school board maps…there is a lot going on for our school communities to adapt to, process and implement this school year. That’s why the East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA) has chosen “We’re All in this Together” as its 2012-13 theme. ECCC PTA (comprised of the 35 schools in the eastern part of Cobb County) recognizes and reminds all stakeholders that they play a role in the success of our students and our schools. Our leadership team recommits itself to supporting all of our PTAs/PTSAs with the resources needed to assist their families, students, teachers and staffs during these challenging times. We are urging stakeholders to vote in the November general election. We all should play a role in choosing who will represent us at the local, state and national levels, particularly when public policy that impacts children is being considered. We are continuing to communicate the “why” and “how” behind the implementation of the Common Core/Georgia Performance Standards. Together, we advocate for our children. Many of you will have the opportunity to join your PTA during the first month of school. We encourage you to make this small investment in your children’s education experience; it will pay big dividends all year long! Family engagement begins with membership, but it doesn’t have to stop there. Now more than ever, our students will benefit from family involvement – whether it is volunteering for center time in a kindergarten class, chaperoning a middle school band trip or learning about your high schooler’s math curriculum. Thirty plus years of research prove that there is a positive and convincing relationship between family involvement and student success, regardless of race/ ethnicity, class or parents’ level of education. Together, we are a presence in our children’s academic journey. Our PTAs also bring or support other activities in our schools like health fairs, anti-bullying awareness, arts programs, healthy lifestyle choices, and science nights. Together, we offer critical programming and many ways for traditional and non-traditional volunteers to be involved. So, come together and join thousands of other parents and teachers in East Cobb who choose to make a difference by being involved and engaged in their child’s educational journey. The PTA mission is to make every child’s potential a reality. Come be a part of this rich tradition. We truly are all in this together, and together…we are powerful. 2012-13 Cobb County Teachers of the Year Announced For Each Academic Level With more than 9,000 outstanding educators in the Cobb County School District, it has become an annual tradition to recognize a Teacher of the Year for each academic level and to give the district-wide honor to one of those three unique teachers. The District announced Mrs. Carolyn Davis of Riverside Intermediate School,and two East Cobb teachers: Dr. Richard Kaht of Dickerson Middle School and Mrs. Beth Morgan of Lassiter High School as the 2012-2013 Cobb County Teachers of the Year! Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa made the surprise announcements during each school’s first faculty meeting of the year on Friday, August 10. Dickerson Middle School’s Dr. Richard Kaht aims to get his students excited about exploring science, using humor and hands-on reinforcement. Dr. Kaht said, “If students do not enjoy my Life Science class, it will be that much harder for them to learn the material and take ownership in the concepts.” For example, after discussing Gregor Mendel’s study of genetics by growing peas, students grew their ss Dr. Richard Kaht own peas in the classroom. “I try to not only teach a subject, but also present skills of learning and the idea that they can be successful and accomplish great things.” During the 2011-2012 school year, Dr. Kaht started Dickerson’s FTC Robotics Club for students as a fun, extracurricular extension of the science concepts covered during class time. In its first year, the team competed against teams of high school students and earned two top ten finishes. Since joining Dickerson in 1999, Dr. Kaht has participated in the DMS Leadership Team, helped implement the Olweus Bullying Prevention program and collaborated with other science teachers to improve instruction throughout Cobb County. find us on
Beth Morgan purposefully repeats two maxims for her students at Lassiter High: “Just think,” and “‘Why?’ is the most important question.” Those simple statements have also driven Mrs. Morgan over the course of her own education and throughout her 26-year teaching career. “My overarching goal is to teach students to live their lives with ferocious attentiveness. Cresco Montessori School Celebrates 10 Years of Exceptional Education in East Cobb
The students at Cresco Montessori School love to learn, and their enthusiasm is contagious. As the school celebrates its 10th anniversary, the staff at Cresco are excited to begin another school year with familiar and new faces.

Cresco is derived from a Latin word meaning “to grow, increase or expand,” and it’s the perfect name for a school whose focus is helping children learn and grow; staff continue professional and career growth and entrepreneur- minded professionals fulfill their dreams of business ownership. Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, developed the Montessori education philosophy after studying how children learn. She determined that children learn better when they can move freely in the classroom, select their learning activity and progress on their own level. The basic tenet of Montessori education is that a child learns best in a supportive environment through exploration, discovery and creativity. Each Montessori classroom is prepared with a range of materials to allow children to progress through the curriculum as their skills develop. In fact, the classrooms intentionally include a mix of ages, so that younger children can learn from older children, and the older children develop leadership skills and confidence. “I firmly believe my own children and the children in our schools have benefited from a Montessori education,” says Ms. Li, executive director of Cresco Montessori School. “We are preparing future leaders through our school, and I encourage parents to visit and see the difference for themselves.” In 2002, Ms. Li and her husband, Dr. Ling, were both working professionals raising two toddlers. The couple believed an educational environment would be best for their children, so they purchased Creative Child Care Center. Because of their high expectations, they soon became dissatisfied with the childcare center’s curriculum. Ms. Li decided to find the best educational program in the world for young children. Today, Cresco Montessori School is a GAC certified private school, a full-service childcare center and a learning center. In addition to the East Cobb location, they also serve families in Buford, Johns Creek and Woodstock. Cresco Montessori School is open from 6:30 am – 6:30 pm for children from 6 weeks old to 6 years old. Students can attend for a half day, school day or full day. Cresco Montessori offers free Georgia Pre-K, scholarships and a GA Tax Redirection Program. The school also provides an afterschool and summer camp program, as well as a variety of after school activities. A focus on family is an important component of the school. September 15: A Day for East Cobbers To Celebrate
The 17th annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 15. The day’s festivities will be kicked off by the EAST COBBER Parade at 10am. The annual parade aims to build a sense of community and reinforce East Cobb County’s status as one of the best places to live in the metro Atlanta area. Floats, high school marching bands and a cornucopia of East Cobb groups will march down the one-mile parade route. Starting at 10am, the parade participants will march from Mount Bethel Elementary School’s parking lot, travel south on Johnson Ferry Road, and then turn into the Fountains of Olde Towne shopping center.

East Cobb kids will have plenty to do at the EAST COBBER Festival from getting their face painted to taking a chance at a carnival game to hopping in a moonwalk. Festival goers will also be treated to food from East Cobb restaurants and civic clubs.

The EAST COBBER Parade will be staged at Mount Bethel Elementary School parking lot (1210 Johnson Ferry Road). Beginning at 10am, parade participants will march south on Johnson Ferry Road, and then, after about one mile, turn into the Fountains of Olde Towne Shopping Center, 736 Johnson Ferry Road. As a safety measure, the Cobb County Police Department will shut down Johnson Ferry Road – both northbound and southbound lanes – from Roswell Road to Lower Roswell Road. This stretch of Johnson Ferry Road will be closed to traffic from 11:15am to 11:30am. Princeton Lakes Drive will also be closed from 8am to 10:30am. Woodlawn Road will be not be closed – but traffic will be affected. Cobb County Department of Transportation will be setting up road detours at the intersections of Indian Hills Parkway & Upper Roswell Road and Indian Hills Parkway & Lower Roswell Road. Road detours will also be set up at the intersections of Timber Ridge Road & Upper Roswell Road and Timber Ridge Road & Lower Roswell Road.

The LooSe ShoEs Band Fine-Tunes Community Involvement a rhythmic marvel who is a full-time drummer and musical instructor. An interesting bit of band trivia: Dana and Martin have been playing music together since seventh grade. LooSe ShoEs even has a roadie, Ivy Bliss, who faithfully helps set up and take down equipment and lends a hand when needed. Spanning from the late ‘60s to current tunes, the band’s repertoire includes blues, rock ‘n roll, reggae, swing, folk, and pop music. The Cushenans are active in their community despite busy schedules. LooSe ShoEs shares its music at many charitable events, such as Special Olympics, Run for Autism, Tour de Pink, and Diabetes Run for the Cure. “We want our community to be successful,” says Pam. “We like to invest ourselves in each venue or event to add to that success.”

It all began when two musicians, Ric and Pam Cushenan, met in Smyrna and started jamming together on their guitars more than 10 years ago. Today The LooSe ShoEs Band boasts five members who perform at clubs, weddings, business events, and many other venues in the metro area as well as throughout the state. You can find them playing at two favorite East Cobb locations, Keegan’s Pub and Chicago’s, and, not too far away, at The Roswell Tap in Roswell. Married and living in East Cobb, the Cushenans are busy people. Business owners and an educator by day and musicians by night (and weekends), they create a fun and exciting atmosphere wherever and whenever they perform. Other band members are Big Al Robinson, who plays harmonica and adds a cool jazz/blues feel to the band; Dana McCarthy, who plays bass with vocals and has been a touring musician since the late ‘60s; and Martin Abbott,

Dog parks provide a fenced in, off-leash dog area where wellbehaved canine citizens can exercise, frolic, and play in a clean, safe area. Here are three area dog parks that cater to man’s best friend.

The following Cobb County dog parks are open daily dawn until dusk and closed each Wednesday morning for maintenance: > Sweat Mountain Park 4346 Steinhauer Road, Marietta 30066 Named Best Dog Park in Summer by Atlanta Magazine. Cobb County’s first off-leash dog park officially opened on October 21, 2006. The dog park is located inside Sweat Mountain Park. There is an area for large dogs and an area for smaller dogs weighing 30 lbs. or less. The park has benches conveniently located for the dog owners to sit and enjoy watching their pets play. > Pitner Road Dog Park 2450 Pitner Road, Acworth 30101 The Pitner Road Dog Park is comprised of two adjoining but separately-fenced play areas for off-leash dogs with approximately 2 acres of space for larger and one acre of space for smaller dogs. The dog lots have both openspace and shady, wooded areas with benched seating for dog owners. Each area has dog water fountains and “poop-mit” stations providing bags for owners to pick up after their pets. There is a gravel access road and parking lot with 50 parking spaces. A combination picnic shelter (presently with four picnic tables) and restroom building sits on a rise and overlooks the playground and dog lots. A multi-function playground for children ages 2 to 12 is between the picnic shelter and the dog lots and can be easily seen from the seating areas of both locations. There is another dog park just over the Cobb County line in Roswell: > Leita Thompson Memorial Dog Park 1355 Woodstock Road, Roswell 30076 Owned and managed by the City of Roswell, this dog park has .75 acres set aside for the big dogs and a quarter-acre set aside for the small dogs. Each area has water spigots and “poop-mit” stations providing bags for owners to pick up after their pets. Recipe of the Month: Chiles Rellenos In honor of Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16 this year, East Cobber (and Mexican-born) Norma Padilla, shares her family recipe for Chiles Rellenos.
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
> 4 medium sized Poblano peppers > Vegetable oil > 1/2 diced white onion > 2 cloves garlic, minced > 4 eggs – separate white from yolk > All purpose flour for breading > Pinch of Salt and pepper > 4-8 toothpicks Cheese Filling
Roast your poblanos until the skin gets dark. Once they are nice and charred, place them in a ziplock bag for 15 minutes. When they are cool to touch take them out of the bag and begin removing the skin. Make a small opening on one side and remove veins and seed. Be careful, not to tear them! Stuff the peppers with the cheese and corn or cooked ground beef and olives. Close the opening with a toothpick. In a bowl stir together the flour and salt and pepper and completely cover each pepper In a mixing bowl, beat whites until stiff and add yolks Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until tender. Cover each pepper with a generous coat of the egg mixture, then dip into flour and fry it until golden.

East Cobb Ducks Unlimited Chapter Celebrates Conservation Efforts of waterfowl habitat in North America, more than any other conservation organization in existence. This is equivalent to the states of New Hampshire and Vermont combined! This year, DU is celebrating its 75th year and the millions of acres purchased and devoted to waterfowl habitat have resulted in more waterfowl than ever in the US.
Of all the hunters in America, duck hunters can be the most obsessed about their sport. The misery they routinely endure just to kill a duck often defies common sense. Thankfully, those crazy water fowlers apply their enthusiasm for the hunt to the preservation of critical habitat too. The fruits of their obsession and dogged determination are some of the most inhospitable but valuable wetlands left in this country. There are several duck hunting groups that work to further the cause of habitat creation and retention, but none are as influential or successful as Ducks Unlimited (DU). Ducks Unlimited was founded in 1937 by three sport hunters: Joseph Knapp, E.H. Low and Robert Winthrop. During the 1930s, the Dust Bowl decimated many wetland areas, and waterfowl populations fell drastically across North America. These three men sought to reverse that trend with focused conservation and habitat restoration efforts to ensure hunting and waterfowl enjoyment would be available for generations to come. Today, Ducks Unlimited is the largest non-profit, private organization for waterfowl and wetland conservation in the world. As a non-profit, DU spends over 90% of monies raised on purchasing of waterfowl habitat that otherwise would be destroyed by development. While DU’s #1 priority is waterfowl, 900 or more wildlife species benefit from their conservation work. DU has conserved almost 12 million acres
The East Cobb Ducks Unlimited Chapter was started four years ago by a core committee of dedicated outdoorsmen. Under their current chairman, Bryce Bennett, the East Cobb members plan a variety of activities, including casual gettogethers, dinners, and hunting trips, all to help raise money to support the organization and its conservation efforts. As Kurt Von Borries, a founding member of the East Cobb Ducks Unlimited, shares, “The best part of the chapter is the fellowship and networking with other hunters. Many of our members socialize and hunt regularly together after not having even known each other four years ago.” To date, the chapter has raised well over $75,000 as they approach another hunting season and their annual banquet October 17th. This fall’s banquet will be at the Indian Hills Country Club. Cost is $110 which includes an outstanding meal and open bar, membership in DU, also door prizes including hats, coolers and other DU items. Also offered at the annual banquet will be raffle items including guns, local fishing guide packages, and hunting trips in Georgia as well as outside the state. While many waterfowl hunters are members of Ducks Unlimited, so are many birders and conservationists who do not hunt. There are more than 580,000 members of the organization in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Relay for Life Ruach Atlanta Planned for October 14 One person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington, as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office. He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed—running marathons. In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. While he circled the track those 24 hours, he thought about how others could take part. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight cancer. His 24-Hour Run Against Cancer has morphed into American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a lifechanging event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who

have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Once again one person has seen the need to make a change and make a difference for the Jewish community here in the metro Atlanta area. Realizing that many Jewish supporters were restricted from the annual Relay because it was on Shabbat, (the Jewish Sabbath, celebrated every week from sundown on Friday to nightfall of Saturday), Sheryl Blechner, Past President of Temple Beth Tikvah in Roswell, with the support and encouragement of Steve Gerson, current President of Temple Beth Tikvah, and Esther Shultz, a Beth Tikvah member on the Relay of Life Roswell Steering Committee, approached the American Cancer Society with the idea of a separate relay that, while not faith based, would consider and respect the needs of those in the Jewish community who could not participate without compromising their religious beliefs. After four months of research and due diligence, it was determined that there was no precedent for this anywhere in the world and thus the Relay for Life Ruach Atlanta was born. Ruach (Spirit) is the very essence of what the relay is about. It is about life, survival and remembrance. Ms. Blechner approached the American Cancer Society with a three year plan. The first two annual events incorporate the twelve congregations north of the Chattahoochee and year three would see the event move to a larger venue and include the entire Jewish community. This year’s Steering Committee includes representatives from Temple Beth Tikvah, Temple Kol Emeth, Congregation Ner Tamid and Congregation Etz Chaim. The kick off for this ambitious event will be on October 14, 2012, from 1PM to dusk and, in keeping with the integrity of the original, will maintain the key components of the relay which will be an opening ceremony, a Survivor Walk and Survivor Dinner. With a participant goal of 20 teams of 10 and a financial goal of $30,000, the relay is destined to be the beginning of a tradition around the world. The American Red Cross could not collect the blood needed by thousands of patients in the 130 hospitals it serves across the Southern Region without the help of willing volunteer blood drive sponsor groups. Blood donations are needed every day to help victims of accidents recover from injuries, and by patients fighting serious blood disorders and various cancers. To give blood for transfusion to another person, you must be healthy, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old if allowed by state law, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days) or made a donation of double red cells in the last 16 weeks (112 days). “Healthy” means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. Sope Creek Creates Outdoor Learning Gardens Sope Creek Elementary School was recently the site of a “first of its kind work day,” bringing together parents, community and 50 Lowe’s Home Improvement employees to build and renovate environmental education sites at the school. This effort brought to reality a long planned outdoor learning environment. Over the course of three days, a team of employees from Lowe’s “Heroes” program created two garden spaces on Sope Creek’s campus. The Heroes program encourages employees in a location to team together, adopt a volunteer project with a local nonprofit organization or K–12 public school and make a difference. Braving heat, humidity, and rain, the Lowe’s Heroes transformed outside school spaces into beautiful, functional and educational gardens. The new environmental sites include a Five-Senses Garden with unique artist-designed garden sculptures, a 3,600-square foot fruit and vegetable garden with year-round greenhouse that serves as an outdoor classroom and an orchard of fruit trees. How this dynamic learning space came to be is a great example of how an entire community, working together, can make a dream a reality. In 2006, Sope Creek partnered with Seeds of Nutrition to teach its students about growing things, cooking healthy and eating whole foods. Garden beds were installed around the
perimeter of the school, and as teachers worked the outdoor gardens into their curriculum they realized how useful it was to bring the classroom outside. Through the years bed spaces were increased, with Alternative Spring Break college students creating another gardening area. Teachers continued to implement gardening projects into the curriculum on their own. The school’s option for using these growing spaces was limited though because they had to confine the gardening curriculum to the school year and they needed more space. With these new spaces, recess and classroom time are full of excitement as a dream of the school is realized – combining a love of the great outdoors with learning.
