The above text was pulled from my first “Publisher’s Note” in the October 1993 issue. While the world has changed (and me, too!) that editorial mission has not changed over the past 23 years! At the ripe young age of 31, the other half of a DINK (Double-Income, No Kids) couple, having lived in East Cobb for just one year, I was searching for a source of information that would acquaint me with my new hometown. Dissatisfied with what I was reading, I believed I could start a paper that would focus on East Cobb exclusively. Using my skills as a marketing and public relations professional and some publishing experience I decided to create a publication that would focus on “ordinary” people, like me, that wanted to get involved in their community and spotlight East Cobb residents who were already involved in the often overlooked network of local clubs, civic groups and PTAs that makes our community so desirable. In fact, as I am writing this publisher’s note, MONEY magazine has named East Cobb the best place to live in Georgia (see page 18). What a proud moment for our community! This accolade is “icing” on EAST COBBER’s proverbial birthday cake.
260 monthly issues, 21 EAST COBBER Parades & Festivals (see pages 8-10 for photos of the latest parade and festival), one website, one Facebook account, one Twitter platform, one Wordpress blog and three healthy children later, I am still devoted to promoting the good works of East Cobbers. It is this sense of purpose that has carried me through many crazy deadline days.
This 23rd business anniversary also allows me to acknowledge and give thanks to the community-minded businesses that have supported this publication by placing ads. And thanks to the 500+ local businesses that act as drop off points so our free magazine is easily available to East Cobb residents. Of course, many thanks to you, our readers, who continue to submit stories. Your letters, emails and phone calls make this community paper truly a grassroots group effort.

On Saturday, September 17, East Cobb residents came together under sunny skies to continue an annual hometown tradition: the 21st annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival. Over 1,800 parade participants representing 120 different groups marched down Johnson Ferry Road to celebrate East Cobb! The parade staged at the Mt. Bethel Elementary School’s parking lot and stepped off at 10am. Crowds lined Johnson Ferry Road early to get the best view. Kids of all ages enjoyed the floats, decorated dogs, high school marching bands, and vintage cars as they marched down the parade path. East Cobb schools honored their principals and/or their “Teachers-of-the-Year.” The EAST COBBER Parade has earned the nickname, “The Candy Parade,” because just about every entry throws candy to the crowd. Many, many thanks to Cobb County Police and Cobb County Department of Transportation for ensuring the safety of parade participants and parade watchers. Heartfelt appreciation goes to the presenting sponsor, WellStar and corporate sponsor, BOSS. Together they provide crucial financial support that ensures the success of this long-standing special event that has become a staple in East Cobb.

Immediately following the EAST COBBER Parade, thousands converged at the EAST COBBER Festival at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. So many enjoyed carnival games, food, live entertainment, and exhibits at the EAST COBBER Festival. This hometown tradition proved to be another great opportunity for East Cobb residents to come together, share their pride, and have some good old-fashioned fun. The 6th annual Elegant Elf Marketplace presented by the Sandy Springs Society returns November 5-6, showcasing several artisans from East Cobb. Kathy Walton, Nawal Shadeed, Lynn Weinberg and Meredith Limoges will join 85 local and regional artists, craftsmen, gourmet food purveyors, and unique gift vendors to present jewelry, handcrafted fashions, fine crafts, home and garden, handbags, toys and more.
Returning for her 5th year, Kathy Walton of Kathy Walton Arts specializes in sophisticated yet whimsical recycled steel and ceramic sculptures. Through each creation, she makes it her goal to “bring a smile or even a laugh to her customers.”
Nawal Shadeed will bring a legendary recipe from Port Royal, Jamaica, to this year’s Elegant Elf. Known for her Aroma Ridge Coffee and Wicked Jack’s Tavern Rum Cakes, Nawal soaks each of her cakes in one of the world’s best Jamaican rums, then vacuum packs each cake before shipping them to customers all over the world.
East Cobb Fiber artist Lynn Weinberg plans to return again to the annual shopping extravaganza after several successful runs. She has spent a lifetime honing her skills in weaving, spinning, felt making, sewing and hand-painting fabric and has spanned the globe with her textile creations under the LRW Designs label. She is now creating unique fashion accessories from hand painted fabrics and combining it with
other textile techniques to create one-of-a-kind scarves, bags and fiber jewelry.
Design was also an early calling for Meredith Limoges of Beaudin Designs, a mother-daughter team who use only the finest materials and craftsmanship to bring shoppers handmade leather bags and accessories. A portion of each sale benefits ministries that rescue and restore victims of human trafficking. Beaudin also trains and hires those who are freed to provide for themselves and family.
Adding to the experience are holiday performances and seasonal music from local school and civic groups, book signings by Emily Giffin and Walter Reeves, chef demonstrations by Souper Jenny and Chef Yuji Kurimaru of Bishoku, festive raffle packages and even a signature lunch at the Polar Express Café.
The “shopping for a cause” fundraiser takes place Saturday, November 5 from 9am-5pm; and Sunday, November 6 from 10am-5pm at Lake Forest Elementary School, 5920 Sandy Springs Circle in Sandy Springs. $5 entrance fee (children 10 and under free). Easy access parking is free. One hundred percent of The Elegant Elf Marketplace proceeds go back to the community through the Sandy Springs Society’s philanthropic grants program that this year funded over 25 nonprofit organizations in the community. Our homes are comfortable primarily because of two basic reasons – that blessed cool air for our hot Georgia summers and that cozy heat in winter. Unless one stops working properly, we usually don’t think too much about our home’s heating and cooling. Could our comfort levels be even better than they are now? How can wi-fi technology work effectively with our HVAC system? Debbie Abernathy, vice president at E. Smith Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., addresses these questions. Abernathy emphasizes the importance of a professional licensed HVAC company to handle your heating and cooling needs.
Depending on the particular scenario, Abernathy says that your heating and cooling comfort can improve by adding either a zoning system or a mini-split unit to your current HVAC system.
“Even with a properly sized and efficient air conditioner and furnace, hot and cold spots can occur,” she explains. “A consistent temperature depends on getting the right amount of airflow to each room. You can spend your days opening and closing individual registers, but in reality, who is going to do that?”
She goes on to say that a zoning system helps solve the hot and cold spots by adjusting the air that goes to each zone. A thermostat in the zone automatically opens and closes a damper in the duct work. Different zones can be set to different temperatures.
A mini-split unit can help with comfort levels if you add a living space, such as a basement office. Abernathy says temperature issues arise because your central system may not be sized to handle the extra load. Quiet and efficient, a mini-split unit consists of a separate outdoor unit and an indoor blower unit that mounts on a wall to distribute the heated or cooled air.
For those who want to incorporate wi-fi technology, a wi-fi thermostat can do the job. Mobile apps allow you to access the system from anywhere. You can adjust the settings, get alerts, monitor the temperature, switch from heat to cool or turn the system on or off. A zoning system can also be accessed through wi-fi technology.
Abernathy gives a warning about installing wi-fi thermostats: “All homeowners should think twice if your alarm monitoring company offers to give you a free wi-fi thermostat. Alarm companies usually don’t employ HVAC technicians, and some air conditioning systems require specific manufacturer thermostats. The last thing you want is for your cooling to stop, only to find out your free wi-fi thermostat is not compatible with your cooling system.”

OPPOSE A STATE TAKEOVER OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS

This November, voters will vote on an amendment to the Georgia Constitution, which if passed, would create a special state-run school district known as the “Opportunity School District” (OSD). This change to our state constitution would grant the Governor and his OSD Superintendent the power to seize control of Georgia schools and supplant their elected local school boards. This OSD Superintendent would be appointed by the Governor and have the power within these OSD schools to control the curriculum; to hire, transfer, or fire the principals; and even to close the school. Each of these actions could be taken without any input from educators, school board members, State Department of Education officials, or parents.
Having Washington dictate a top-down approach for Georgia’s local schools doesn’t work, and it won’t work coming from Atlanta, either. Every school within every district has its own unique student and parent populations with individual needs and issues. Communities will understand these needs better than an Atlanta bureaucrat. State takeovers of schools have been tried in Louisiana and Tennessee. These states, often cited as models for Georgia’s OSD legislation, have decided this approach does not work and have recently ended their programs.
The state already has the power to assist students in struggling schools if necessary (Georgia Code O.C.G.A. 20-14-41), and the Charter School Commission may approve charter schools that cannot get approval from local districts. The OSD amendment does nothing to address the root causes of struggling schools: poverty, lack of parental involvement, and low student engagement, none of which will be fixed by the state seizing control of these schools. The only programs that have helped turn these struggling schools around involve engaging all stakeholders in programs designed by those same stakeholders. This requires time, energy, and funding – none of which are addressed in a state takeover.
When the state takes over a school, the state takes control of all funding for that school and can use it however the OSD Superintendent sees fit. The local school board would have no control of the facility, the funding, or anything else regarding the school. Any school deemed failing for three consecutive years may be closed and may have their building shuttered for three years: no classes, no school—the facility is closed. However, the state can then give control of that taxpayer-funded building to a for-profit charter management company free of charge, handing property purchased with taxpayer dollars over to private, for-profit compa-
nies. Some of these private charter companies are not even based in Georgia. How then will they know what is best for Georgia’s students?
The charter school doesn’t just gain free access to the building; everything within the school building “including, but not limited to textbooks, technology, media resources, instructional equipment, and all other resources” shall “remain within the facility and be available for use by the opportunity school” (Senate Bill 133, pg 15, lines 239-242). This clause legally allows the OSD Superintendent to declare a school failing and then to hand over the entire building and facility to a charter school and for-profit management company. This transfers any real estate, equipment, and materials purchased with public funds over to private companies.
No governor of Georgia should have the power to be judge, jury, and executioner of public schools. This amendment would give the governor and his appointed OSD Superintendent the means to use opaque measures to declare a school “failing,” the power to close that school, and the legal authority to transfer the entire facility and materials to a for-profit charter management corporation.
Governor Deal, who failed to put current educators or parents of public school children on his Education Reform Commission, should be seeking input from all stakeholders, educators, parents, and community leaders to find solutions to helping schools with struggling students succeed. Instead, he is asking the voters of Georgia to approve a constitutional amendment to grant him extraordinary powers to take over our local schools.
Educators and parents have had enough of these attacks on our public education system, and we must educate ourselves and our communities about this amendment that would take control of our local schools and hand them and the facilities citizens have paid for over to for-profit corporations. When we educate our children, we are investing in the future, not some private charter management company’s profit margin.

Mr. Palmer also serves as Teacher Advisor the the Board of Directors of the Georgia PTA and as Spokesperson for the groups Teachers Rally to Advocate for Georgia Insurance Choices (T.R.A.G.I.C.). His wife is also a teacher in Cherokee County and his two children attend Mt. Bethel Elementary School and Dickerson Middle School.
GOLF TOURNAMENT AND SILENT AUCTION TO SUPPORT “IT’S THE JOURNEY”
On Sunday, October 23 and Monday, October 24, East Cobb residents Helen Hvizdak and Kathy Bovey Bartelme will co-host a silent auction and golf tournament, both at Indian Hills Country Club. The proceeds from both events will benefit “It’s the Journey,” a 501(c)(3) organization that raises funds for Georgia’s breast cancer organizations. It’s also the program sponsor for the Atlanta 2-Day Walk to fight against breast cancer.
The silent auction will be held from 5-8 pm on October 23. Items for auction will include vacation getaways, sports memorabilia, original artwork, themed gift baskets and more. Additionally, the evening will include a raffle. There is no cost to attend the auction, and there will be appetizers, a cash bar and entertainment provided by East Cobb-based musicians.
The Fore the Cure golf tournament will be held October 24, with registration beginning at 8 am, and a shotgun start at 9 am. Participants will receive the use of a golf cart, lunch and 18 holes of golf. Individual, foursome and corporate sponsorships are available.
Helen and Kathy chose to support “It’s the Journey” in their fundraising efforts for very personal reasons. Kathy is a breast cancer survivor, and Helen’s sister as well as numerous friends have been diagnosed with the disease. “This organization supports all aspects of breast cancer treatment including diagnosis and rehabilitation. It also contributes to breast cancer research at Emory,” said Helen. She also noted that all monies raised for “It’s the Journey” stay here in Georgia. The organization also has received a three out of four star ranking on Charity Navigator.org, which rates charitable organizations based on financial health, accountability and transparency and results reporting. Last year, Helen and Kathy raised $44,000 for “It’s the Journey,” and they hope to exceed that this year, especially with the addition of the silent auction.

East Cobb has been named by MONEY magazine as the best place to live in Georgia. “The unincorporated area administered by the Cobb County Government was once dominated by chain restaurants, but it’s now embracing mom-and-pops that will give your taste buds a pleasant surprise—and make the most of the small-town Dixie hospitality,” said MONEY magazine. Accompanying their blurb is a photo from a recent EAST COBBER Parade.
This is the first year the publication has added a best in state to its annual listing. The Best in State places were chosen based on economic and lifestyle factors. As stated in the MONEY magazine article: “One reason we’ve added this Best in State list is to help people who live in (most) every state find a new and perhaps better hometown that’s relatively close to their current one. The other reason is perhaps less useful, but it’s more fun: bragging rights.”

Kelly Page, better known as bluegraygal, is a visual storyteller. Her Pinterest page proclaims: I love blues, grays, chandeliers, hydrangeas, cocktails(!) and elegant home design. This East Cobb mom and entrepreneur shares these particular loves and much more through photography, video and TV.
The genesis of bluegraygal came about in October 2015 when Kelly posted an Instagram to test how her stories and ideas would be received through social media. That original Instagram blossomed into her bluegraygal brand and website, as well as a following on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and LinkedIn.
At bluegraygal.com, Kelly offers entertaining, style, gardening and travel stories using her own photography and her own personal point of view. She has an eye for detail and experience both in front of and behind a camera. A former TV news anchor, Kelly also worked in production for MTV and VH1 and at AT&T in commercial production.
“My website offers a little of everything from how-to videos to product recommendations to online shopping,” says Kelly. “If I find a great product or create an easier way to go about life, I include it on bluegraygal.”
For those products that she loves and uses, Kelly recommends them through bluegraygal. She recently produced a first day of school video for the children’s clothing company, Hanna Andersson. Her eight-year-old daughter and five-year-old twin boys boarded the Cobb County school bus sporting their Hanna Andersson outfits. She is currently working with companies such as Sherwin Williams, Ace Hardware and Target to promote some of her favorite products.
Her website’s online shopping is an extension of Kelly’s product recommendations, and she primarily
works with women entrepreneurs. Her latest collaboration is with Plush Pumpkin by Monya Kampa, which she discovered at a local East Cobb store. Kelly contacted the pumpkin creator to make an exclusive color collection of the velvet pumpkins in, of course, the signature shades of blue and gray. They are available only at bluegraygal.
As she continues to refine her bluegraygal brand, Kelly offers styling services to help others with like interests develop a brand for their products. Her first step is to outline a vision and expectation for the product. Then with that same sense of style that she brings to her own brand, Kelly works with the product creator to establish campaign goals for a website and social media promotion.
Kelly can also be found doing lifestyle segments on NBC’s Atlanta & Company, which airs Monday-Friday, 11am-12pm, on Channel 11Alive. In this setting, she shares tips on subjects such as unique framing and purse organization. Videos of these segments are on her website.

OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND AT MT. BETHEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
With the addition of a second East Cobb campus in 2014, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy became the first and only faith-based, independent school in East Cobb serving all grade levels, JK-12th. CHOOSING A PRIVATE SCHOOL
The reasons cited over and over again by families who send their children to private schools include individual attention, small classes, teacher excellence, and high academic standards.
Your decision to consider an independent/private school is just the beginning. While private schools set high standards and emphasize values, they are wonderfully distinct from each other. There are day and boarding schools; coeducational, girls’, and boys’ schools. Enrollment varies from a few dozen to a few thousand students. Some independent schools are progressive, others more traditional in structure. Private schools also serve a varying range of students in terms of abilities and interests. Some schools offer special programs such as intensified instruction in the fine and performing arts, experiential learning projects, or travel abroad seminars. Many schools excel at rigorous intellectual preparation; others are dedicated to average learners; and some specialize in teaching bright students with learning disabilities. Since each of these schools has something unique to offer, ideally you are trying to match a student’s needs with the appropriate school. Write or call the admissions office for published information about a school’s philosophy and programs, and then make an appointment to visit.
If you haven’t done so already, contact each potential school for information dealing with philosophy, curriculum, extracurricular offerings, admission process, and financing options. Compare each school’s literature with the items on your list; this should give you a preliminary sense of which schools are a good match. Take into account what type of environment would be best for your child and consider his or her individual strengths as you examine each school’s program.
The best time to apply is in the fall preceding the academic year of the student’s admission; however, applications are considered throughout the school year. Most schools will require a personal interview, admissions testing, and information from your child’s current school. Ask the individual school for the details of its application procedures and testing dates.
In short, choosing the right school for your child is likely the most important single decision you might make in terms of setting the proper path and direction for life. A little preparation and research on the part of parents will go miles toward making the ultimate destination clear at the exit ramp.

WHEELER HIGH SCHOOL’S F1 TEAM HEADS TO WORLD FINALS
Wheeler High School has an F1 in Schools team, named Team Mu Racing, who, in their first competition ever, placed second. This first competition was the 2016 US/Canada National Championships in Michigan.
F1 in Schools is an international engineering competition based around developing, conceptualizing, designing, manufacturing, and testing a model F1 car. Teams are judged on their engineering designs, engineering process, technical writing, marketing and business strategies, and overall car performance. Each team may have up to six members who create model F1 cars that are manufactured out of a dense foam block to be raced down a 20 meter track. The model car is powered by a compressed CO2 cartridge punctured at launch, accelerating the model at up to 14 G’s.
This six-member team consists of Ajinkya Sawant, Ari Satinoff, Sarfaraz Syed, Nathanael Tappin, Kia Safai, and Jonathan Shoemaker, all who are seniors at the Center for Advanced Studies at Wheeler High School.
The boys started this team all on their own during junior year. It had been a while since Wheeler had a team participate so they took it upon themselves to move forward and see what they could do. Most of the other teams at the national competition were veterans and had been to previous competitions. Team Mu did not compete at a regional competition since there were not enough schools in the SE region to even have a competition. National was a three-day event. They did not have a lot to show, but what they did have was simple and to the point. They made such a big impression on one of the judges that he has now taken them under his wing and is an advisor to Team Mu.
Since placing at the national championships, they have been working very hard preparing for the F1 in Schools World Finals, October 14-23 in Austin, Texas. Check out their website www.mu-racing.ga for an in-depth look at the team, all they have accomplished
in a short period of time, what their plans are for Worlds, and learn about sponsorships.
The costs involved in what they are trying to accomplish is a major feat itself. Each required part has a cost: each individual piece of the car, the 3D printing of the car parts (and multiple designs are needed to get to the final product), the display at the competition, the marketing plan/research presentation booklet, and then travel, hotel, meals and just even the registration fee for the competition when all added up costs tens of thousands of dollars.
The team hopes the local community will help sponsor their trip to the world finals. To continue what they started, Team Mu is also encouraging, mentoring, and training younger Wheeler students how to participate in the F1 in Schools program, start their own teams, and build it up so there can be enough teams in the Southeast to allow for a regional competition in the future. They are hoping that other schools in Cobb County, and within the metro Atlanta area, hear about them and decide it is something they want to start. YWCA SEEKS LOCAL WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT
The YWCA of Northwest Georgia will be celebrating the 32nd Anniversary of their Tribute to Women of Achievement on March 24, 2017. Since the inception of this event, they have honored more than 500 women who have demonstrated sustained excellence, exemplary achievement, and leadership in their chosen profession and in the community.
They hope you will aid in their search for the 2017 Woman of the Year. Women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in their professional and community endeavors and lives and/or works. Women living in Cobb, Cherokee or Paulding counties are eligible to receive this honor.
They are currently accepting nominations for the 2017 Tribute to Women of Achievement Honorees. Good Mews is one of the few virtually cage-free, no-kill cat shelters in the state of Georgia. Since 1988, Good Mews has placed over 6,800 cats in permanent homes. The nonprofit receives no government support, relying solely on donations of time, service and money from our supporters, the public and area businesses. Good Mews is home to approximately 100 cat residents at any given time, with another 30 to 40 cats in foster care or their HALO program, which allows cats with severe and/or chronic medicals needs to find homes with Good Mews continuing to provide the medical care related to that condition. Good Mews has an average adoption rate of 350 cats per year.

COMMON MOUTH SORES
Mouth sores that appear on the lips, roof of the mouth, tongue, gums, or inside the cheeks can be ugly, painful, and annoying. Eating and speaking can be difficult as any movement of the affected tissue can cause discomfort. Two common types of painful mouth sores are canker sores and cold sores.
Canker sores, or apthous ulcers, are usually single small, flat lesions with a white, gray, or yellow center and a red border. Occasionally, they may be large, or there may even be multiple ulcers, but they are almost always painful. There are several different causes of canker sores. Fatigue, stress, or a weakened immune system can trigger the formation of a canker sore. Certain types of foods or even trauma from cheek or lip biting or eating a sharp piece of food can create a canker sore as well. Treatment for canker sores is for relief of discomfort only as there is no cure. Over the counter medications are typically numbing creams or germ-fighting mouthrinses. Occasionally a dentist may prescribe corticosteroids for a patient with multiple reoccurring ulcers. Avoiding spicy and acidic foods and beverages will help minimize the pain of canker sores. Most canker sores heal and disappear within 7-10 days.
Cold sores, or fever blisters, are clusters of fluid-filled blisters that erupt on or around the lips. They can also occur on the gums near the teeth or on the roof of the mouth. After a few days the blisters may break and become a scab. Cold sores are caused
by the herpes virus which is contagious. Drinking from the same cup, sharing eating utensils, or kissing someone with a cold sore are some of the ways the virus is transmitted from one person to another. Once a person is infected, the virus can stay in the body in the inactive state for a period of time and may occasionally be activated by irritants like wind, the sun, and stress. Most cold sores heal within a week or two. There is no cure for the virus or the lesion, but topical anesthetics or anti-inflammatory agents available over the counter can provide temporary relief from discomfort. A dentist can prescribe topical antiviral medications, but they must be applied within the first day or two to be of any benefit.
Not all mouth sores are harmless. A lesion that persists for longer than two weeks should be evaluated by a dentist. Based on the appearance, location, and possible causes of the lesion, your dentist will determine whether or not the area needs to be biopsied or evaluated by a specialist.

Students in the Sport Health Science Department at Life University pursue these questions and more, working in a living laboratory to examine and maximize the human body’s potential.
For many Life University Sport Health Science students, sports and fitness were a first love. They find kinship with their professors, many of whom are athletes and coaches active in their fields, leading industry athletics conferences and coaching young athletes to the height of their game. When passion for health and athletics is met with academic rigor and in-the-field experience, students launch their education into meaningful, purpose-driven careers. “I enjoy it because I can keep the connection to sports and athletes,” said alumna Azalea Hancock, MAT, AT, LAC. “I played basketball growing up, was an assistant coach at a high school and my family is big on sports. So staying active and maintaining that connection is important to me.”
Undergraduate exercise science students receive the highest-quality education and technical instruction in the disciplines of anatomy, biology, biochemistry, physiology and kinesiology, applying this knowledge to a range of populations. They also learn to work with the body as an innately intelligent organism, and to care for athletes and
