MILAN EYE CENTER DELIVERS A CLEAR VISION FOR EAST COBB University Medical Center where he developed an interest in corneal transplantation studies. Dr. Vira received the prestigious Beem Fisher Research Award for his work. After a year in private practice and as a teaching-attending physician at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Chicago, he returned to Georgia for fellowship training in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at the Emory Eye Center. Now a team member at Milan Eye Center, Dr. Vira is also affiliated with several Metro Atlanta hospitals, including North Fulton Hospital, Northside HospitalCherokee, and Northside Hospital-Forsyth and will soon be affiliated with the WellStar Health System.

Dr. Samir Vira, Milan Eye Center

In an environment where compassion meets excellence in eye care, Milan Eye Center has been treating and helping patients in the Metro Atlanta area since 2009. In July of this year, Milan Eye Center opened an East Cobb office and surgery center, which is its sixth location in the metro area. At the helm of this new office is Dr. Samir Vira, a board-certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in corneal disease and LASIK-refractive surgery. According to Dr. Vira, who joined the practice when the new office opened, “What drew me to Milan Eye Center was its focus on personalized patient care. The doctors’ collective approach is basic but so important – to customize care for each individual patient. We make sure that each patient understands his or her condition and together we strive to achieve the best possible outcome. That’s not always the case with many eye care centers. We want to focus on a patient’s individualized needs rather than the number of patients seen in the clinic.” Dr. Vira brings a wealth of training and experience to his new position in Milan Eye Center’s East Cobb office. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated with honors with a degree in Computer Science. Dr. Vira then received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. After moving to Chicago for a competitive internship at Evanston Northwestern Hospital, he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Loyola

At the forefront of new technology and procedures, Milan Eye Center offers an array of services from LASIK, cataract surgery, and lens replacement surgery to comprehensive eye care including management of glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, oculoplastics, corneal disease and transplantation, and macular degeneration. One of the ophthalmologists at Milan Eye Center has even developed a smart phone app called Easy Drops, which helps patients with reminders of their next scheduled eye drops. Open Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, the East Cobb office welcomes patients with most insurance plans. For unexpected eye care emergencies, walks-ins are welcome as well. And for after-hour emergencies, a Milan Eye Center doctor is always available for patients. Milan Eye Center is located at 3775 Roswell Rd., Suite 150, Marietta, GA 30062, next to the WellStar East Cobb Health Park. For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit www.milaneyecenter.com or call 678-381-2020. “With a premier eye care clinic and in-house surgery center right here in East Cobb, we make it easy for residents to get excellent treatment close to home,” says Dr. Vira. “And it’s our promise that those who visit our newest location will receive the same personalized care that has become the signature of Milan Eye Center.”

On Sunday, November 8 at 10:30am, East Cobb Author Mike Wien will share some of his experiences, through his newest book, The Specific Edge: How Sustained Effort Wins in Business and Life. A program of the 24th annual Book Festival of the MJCCA, the Mike Wien author event will be held at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA), 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody. Admission to the Mike Wien event is free to the community. The Specific Edge is a blueprint for the average person to achieve success and fulfillment far above average. Whether you are an entrepreneur, a corporate executive, or an individual building your career, identifying and capitalizing upon your specific edge creates a competitive advantage. With your specific edge, you create a point of differentiation and tune into opportunities around you.

Mike Wien

Included in The Specific Edge are hard-earned insights from the first twenty-eight years of Wien’s career with leadership roles in marketing at Pepsi, Frito-Lay, Citibank, and Deloitte. These insights are combined with strategies learned from the secondhalf of his career – when he ditched corporate life and became a world-class triathlete. Mike has competed in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship four times in the past eight years. “Many people have the misconception that success is the result of innate talent, dumb luck, or a magic formula,” explains Wien. “In reality, winners succeed through a combination of three things: the concentration to retain focus, the discipline to continually improve, and the endurance to overcome obstacles and failures.” For 24 successful years, the Book Festival of the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) has provided Atlanta with a literary extravaganza featuring an exciting lineup of the year's most exceptional authors, celebrities, and influencers. Please join thousands of your fellow book lovers to listen, meet, and interact with your favorite authors in a variety of forums, including author meet-and-greets, book signings, a community read, panel discussions, and much more. A Tradition in East Cobb for 27 Years!

DIVERSITY TODAY = SUCCESS TOMORROW By Barbara Sobel, Chair, East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC) PTA Diversity Committee According to a study published in Scientific American, being around people who are different from us actually makes us more creative, more diligent, and more productive. It’s easy to see the importance of diversity in the workplace; we grow by learning from those around us who perform at a higher skill level. Diverse experiences, backgrounds, and viewpoints foster creativity. Diverse perspectives lead to better decision making and problem solving. This concept is based on decades of research from scientists, psychologists, sociologists, economists, and demographers. Diversity is necessary to build innovative teams or organizations. Diversity sometimes may result in differences of opinion - but that’s not always a bad thing. Studies on group cohesiveness and productivity have revealed that non-diverse groups focus strictly on facts – and lack creativity. And a lack of creativity leads to a lack of problem solving. As Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, once said, “strength lies in differences, not similarities.” Why do we think differently when it comes to social diversity, such as race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation? Some studies show that social diversity leads to discomfort, disrespect, disregard, and disunion, among other problems. In giving in to that discomfort, we cheat ourselves and our children out of becoming more creative, more productive, and smarter! How can we foster successfully diverse learning environments in our schools? • Encourage all families to actively participate in their children’s education and school community.

• Understand the role that identity and background may play in shaping relationships between teachers and families. • Bring a sense of self-reflection and cultural humility to all conversations and interactions. • View linguistic, cultural and family diversity as strengths. • Get involved with your school’s cultural fair or assembly. If the school does not have one, work with your PTA or parent group to organize an International Cultural Fair or similar event. • Ask if your school is a certified “No Place for Hate School.” The No Place for Hate initiative is designed to rally a school around the goal of creating a welcoming community dedicated to stopping all forms of bias and bullying. Find the No Place for Hate website at www.atlanta.adl.org/npfh An attitude of inclusion is critical for our children and their future. It is important for a safe and welcoming school environment, to foster a culture of respect, and to encourage the creativity and innovation that is inspired by different perspectives and ideas. With the expanding accessibility of the Internet, ease of travel, and the increasingly mobile nature of society, our world is flattening. We experience and are exposed to more social diversity than our parents, and our children will experience a different, more diverse world than we can imagine. We can prepare our children for tomorrow by exposure to, respect for and interaction with a diverse group of friends, coworkers and fellow students.

• Open a dialogue for parents or guardians to share knowledge about their students’ lives, interests, hopes and struggles. • Invite parents or guardians to share information about family cultures and traditions. • Recognize and respect differences in family structures and cultures.

East Cobb Police Officers of the Year Awards



Last month, the East Cobb Business Association sponsored the third annual East Cobb Public Safety Appreciation Celebration for Precinct 4’s police and personnel. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of Officers of the Year awards presented by Precinct 4's Captain Jerry Quan; Kim Paris, Community Outreach Coordinator for WellStar; and, Michael Johnson, Director of the WellStar East Cobb Health Park. The recipients of these awards are named below and on the facing page.

 CLINT DENSON

 BRYAN KIMBELL MORNING WATCH OFFICER PRECINCT 4 2015 MORNING OFFICER OF THE YEAR

FIELD TRAINING OFFICER PRECINCT 4 2015 DAYSHIFT OFFICER OF THE YEAR

In today's current climate, as portrayed through the news and social media, life as a uniform patrol officer has never been more difficult and trying. It requires a person with integrity, honesty and the desire to do the right thing despite it not being the popular or fashionable thing to do. With these attributes and more, it is with great honor that Dayshift Officer of the Year, Field Training Officer is Clint Denson. Not only does he educate new hires but his peers as well. The department has gained new equipment including a portable finger print scanner and a vehicle mounted license plate reader. He has taken on an administrator's role on the systems and has taught numerous classes to his shift on the devices. He has asked to represent the East Cobb Precinct at the multijurisdictional gang intelligence meetings. When an illness, retirement, death or birth occurs within one of our employee's families, any arrangements are done through contributions from fellow employees. He has stepped up to handle the collection of funds when no one else was willing.

FRIDAY NOON - 5PM

SATURDAY 9AM-4PM

NOVEMBER 13-14

IAMAW UNION HALL

Bryan Kimbell was chosen as the Morning Officer of the Year, not only because he is the most productive officer on the shift but also because he is a conscientious and dependable worker who consistently demonstrates dedication and professionalism in performance of the job. Officer Kimbell always shows up ready to work and rarely requires supervision. In the current twelve month rating period he has only taken two days of sick leave (notable for anyone working morning watch). During a previous rating period, his dependability and dedication was highlighted when he attempted to drive to work during a snowstorm, but became stuck. Instead of giving up and returning home, he began walking to work to begin his shift. His reluctance to allow the weather to deter his performance was evident as recently as last week when he was making traffic stops in the rain. Another example of his dedication was exhibited when he approached the supervisors and asked to be permanently assigned to 410 beat so he could focus on the criminal activity that was occurring in that area. While working that area, which includes the Canton Road corridor from Marietta to Woodstock, he built a rapport with the individuals who run businesses or travel in that area overnight and worked to address their concerns about criminal activity. Officer Kimbell has always conducted himself with the utmost amount of professionalism. He always shows respect towards members of the community, his coworkers and his supervision. You would think that an officer who consistently makes traffic stops and takes people to jail would have a lot of complaints, but that is not the case for Officer Kimbell as he has had zero documented complaints.

CIU DETECTIVE PRECINCT 4 2015 CIU-4 DETECTIVE OF THE YEAR

FIELD TRAINING OFFICER PRECINCT 4 2015 EVENING WATCH OFFICER OF THE YEAR

The work of a Detective is never truly done. At the end of the work day and the end of the work week, the case load remains. Proper case load management takes persistence, skill and intuition. Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) Detective Chad Gasque continues to display the talents necessary for success. His self-initiated activity, motivation and enthusiasm stand out. Over the past year, Detective Gasque's talents have resulted in his success of handling the most assigned cases in the unit and clearing the most cases by arrest.

Nicholas Slatton was hired by the Cobb County Police Department in December of 2011 and in July of 2015 he was activated as a Field Training Officer (FTO). FTO Slatton maintains a high level of competency and knowledge in his profession which will certainly benefit the recruits he will be tasked to train.

As an example of his talents, in December 2014, Det. Gasque acquired intelligence through a suspect interview that related the committed crime as a payoff to a gang. Over the course of the next several weeks, Detective Gasque obtained further information from the suspect regarding the gang who has shown the propensity for violence against Cobb officers. The information obtained by Detective Gasque was distributed throughout the department as officer safety alerts, as well as for criminal prosecution.

FTO Slatton is also very compassionate for the public that he serves. He recently responded to a medical call where an elderly man had passed away from natural causes. The man's elderly wife was visibly distraught, having no close family members nearby. FTO Slatton stayed at the home and assisted the wife with arrangements for her deceased husband. In July 2014, FTO Slatton successfully performed CPR on an individual for which he was awarded the county's "Life Saving Award." In January 2015, FTO Slatton again successfully performed CPR, saving a second human life.

What do I do if my dog or cat bites someone? You will be required to make a decision about the future of your pet. Confinement is a must under the Cobb County Animal Control Ordinance. This quarantine/confinement is necessary for 10 days. You can choose to quarantine the animal at your vet or the Cobb County Animal Control Shelter. If you do not choose to keep the animal because of the bite, you can request that the animal be put to sleep and tested for rabies. Neither of these options are not pleasant, but because of the potential for a rabies exposure and/or liability on your part you must make the decision that is best for your situation. Animal Control does not normally adopt out animals that have bitten or scratched, but every situation is considered individually.

VETERAN SERVES COUNTRY AND COMMUNITY Editor’s Note: This month, we salute all small business owners like Chris Sims who have served our country or are serving today. Enjoy the brief profile on Chris below covering his military, family and small business journey.

A

rmy Sergeant First Class Christopher Sims grew up in East Cobb and knew since he was a child that he wanted to join the military when he grew up. In fact, he enlisted in the Army prior to graduating from Walton High School in 1999. Chris has been in the U.S. Army for more than 16 years and continues to serve. At the start of his military career, he completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia and then was stationed in Hawaii for three years as a light infantry solider in the 25th Infantry Division. Upon returning, he started college and joined the Army National Guard. “I wanted to get my degree and still serve,” he says. After 9/11 Chris was sent to Iraq as a member of a Long Range Surveillance (LRS) team. While in Iraq he was severely injured, including multiple broken bones in the face and a cracked skull. He spent six months recovering from surgery, but he it didn’t slow him down any. He continued to work on his history degree and then attended a Special Forces Qualification course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. As a Green Beret assigned to 20th Special Forces Group, he was first deployed to Columbia, South America where he advised and trained anti-narcotic and insurgent operations teams. Prior to leaving for Columbia, he met his wife Jessica in January 2008 who was crazy enough to continue dating him while deployed. They were married in October 2008 and their daughter Naomi was born the following year. Even though it was tough to leave his new family, Chris continued serving in Special Forces. His job was never boring. He taught Jumpmaster school, SERE school and an urban shooting course to other Green Berets. He also worked for Blackwater for a year and completed two trips to Afghanistan to fight Al Qaeda. In 2009, Chris decided to be home more and took a job as a Mass Mutual Financial Representative. “Although

I learned a lot, I found that a desk job might not be for me,” he said. He knew it was time for a change so talked to an Army buddy Jason Sobczak about opening a CrossFit gym in East Cobb. “CrossFit was relatively new to the fitness industry, but we had experienced amazing physical fitness results after doing CrossFit in Special Forces,” says Chris. The team opened CrossFit East Cobb on Lower Roswell Road in 2009, and it’s grown by leaps and bounds since then. They currently have more than 200 members and eight coaches, including Chris. He went back to Afghanistan in 2012 and also traveled to Japan, Romania and Macedonia for shorter military trips. At the same time, he and his wife had their son Sam, and he took steps to complete an MBA degree. He also started the non-profit, Fitness Fueling and Awareness that hosts a golf tournament each year to benefit Cystic Fibrosis research. In January 2015, he was deployed to northern Iraq as a combat advisor where Chris and his Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) helped The Peshmerga fight ISIS. Chris has been back since August and is busy with CrossFit East Cobb. He plans to remain in the Army for a few more years. We thank Chris for his commitment to our country and for being a successful and philanthropic small business owner and community member.

PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT IMPROVES QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PATIENTS

W

ellStar physicians are looking at treating nonaggressive prostate cancer in a whole new way that is improving the quality of life for many patients. After annual screenings and follow up tests detect prostate cancer, patients in the United States with low-grade, goodprognosis cancer may Gaspar Msangi, MD. have traditionally been overtreated. In these cases, men suffer from unnecessary side effects including urinary incontinence and sexual impotence. But doctors now say patients may want to reserve aggressive treatments for when prostate cancer has aggressive features or is advancing quickly to improve the quality of life for their patients. Despite the new less aggressive treatment mindset, it is still necessary for many patients with advanced prostate cancer to consider treatment to improve their chances of survival. Consequently, it is critical for men to keep a pulse on their prostate health with annual screenings. “Awareness of your health is important for all men,” said Gaspar Msangi, M.D. of WellStar Urology in Douglasville. “Your prostate heath, just as your general health should be an ongoing discussion between you and your physician.” He recommends men begin annual prostate screenings at 55 years of age to 69. For men with a family history of prostate cancer or who are of African descent, he recommends beginning earlier – even as early as the age of 45. Screening for prostate cancer is a simple blood test that measures the prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Patients can request this annual screening during

their annual well visits with their primary care physicians at the same time as other recommended screening tests, such as those for diabetes and heart disease. “The PSA test is not perfect but it’s the best screening tool we have for prostate cancer,” said Dr. Msangi, who received his medical degree from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. “If someone has an elevated PSA, it increases our suspicion that he may have cancer. But just because there is a high PSA, it doesn’t necessarily mean he has cancer. In the case of an elevated PSA, a second PSA may be recommended. With a confirmed elevated PSA, imaging tests and a prostate biopsy can help determine whether cancer is the cause. When confirming a prostate cancer diagnosis with a patient, Dr. Msangi discusses a variety of factors to help the patient understand the prognosis and treatment options. If the cancer appears to be aggressive or advanced, he may recommend the patient consider surgery, radiation or hormonal therapy. In other cases – especially those where the prostate cancer appears to be nonaggressive – he may educate the patient on what is called “active surveillance.” That’s when a patient chooses to forgo or delay treatment because side effects may outweigh the symptoms of the cancer itself. Instead, he is very closely watched with regular exams and blood tests. This can significantly increase the quality of life for the patient. “When it comes to prostate cancer, there’s no black and white answer. If a patient decides active surveillance is affecting his quality of life and he’s worrying too much, then we will look at treatment. There’s usually more than one option.” Gaspar Msangi, M.D. practices with WellStar Urology at locations in Douglasville, Marietta, Austell and Hiram. For more information or to make an appointment with a physician today, visit wellstar.org.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT: NOVEMBER 19

T

he American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By quitting — even for one day — smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk. Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet about 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes — Nearly 1 in every 5 adults. As of 2013, there were also 12.4 million cigar smokers in the US, and 2.3 million who smoke tobacco in pipes — other dangerous and addictive forms of tobacco.

More than 10,000 people die in Georgia every year from tobacco-related illnesses—that’s more than all the deaths from alcohol, cocaine, heroin, AIDS, murder, suicide, auto accidents and fires combined. In spite of these chilling statistics, 24 percent of Georgia adults smoke. An estimated 30,000 Georgia children begin smoking every year and another 10,000 begin to use spit tobacco. More than 70 percent of the 50 million US smokers want to quit, but only 2.5% per year succeed in quitting smoking permanently. Tobacco dependence is a

chronic disease where quitters face periods of relapse and remission. Adult cigarette use is 24% in Georgia and the Tobacco Quit Line is a resource to help Georgians quit using tobacco. The Tobacco Quit Line provides free counseling, a resource library, support and referral services for tobacco users. It is available for all Georgia residents age 18 or older and concerned parents of adolescents using tobacco. The Tobacco Quit Line is funded by the master tobacco settlement through the state’s Tobacco Use Prevention Section in partnership with the Georgia Cancer Coalition. It has no commercial bias and no products to promote. As a caller, you will receive free, professional support that’s tailored to your needs. At the Quit Line, a counselor conducts an initial interview with a caller to determine tobacco usage and willingness to quit. An assessment is made based on the caller’s needs and multiple options are presented. Callers will receive a customized quit plan, including up to five additional counseling phone calls. Up-to-date information about physician-recommended pharmacological support, such as nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and other items are available. A Tobacco Quit Kit, including materials tailored to the caller’s readiness to quit is also available. So stop smoking and start dialing: call the Tobacco Quit Line at 1-877-270-STOP.

THANKSGIVING DAY RACE BENEFITS MUST MINISTRIES

W

hen a small group of volunteers planned the first Gobble Jog in 2003, they had no idea how quickly the event would grow into one of the best attended and most beloved holiday festivities in the South. The 1,400 original runners helped raise $29,000 that year and the Gobble Jog was literally “off and running” with a 10K, 5K, 1K and Tot Trot. Over the next 13 years, the Gobble Jog has become a tradition for thousands of people who get together with their friends and families to kick off their holiday. Today, more than 9,500 runners and walkers pour into the Marietta Square on Thanksgiving morning for the fun and excitement of a great event for a great cause. The proceeds now exceed $500,000 and continue to benefit MUST Ministries, one of Georgia’s recognized servant leaders. “This year, there is something different and exciting,” said Special Events Coordinator Cara Reeve. On race day, stay on the Marietta Square to enjoy the first ever Winter Wonderland in downtown. You can even skate on a rink made just for this event and Thanksgiving Day proceeds benefit MUST!

The event has become a wonderful, street party atmosphere with costumes, “Gobble Dogs”, family teams, corporate teams, church groups, firefighters running in full gear and lively music, Reeve explained. “Everyone loves kicking off the holiday season at MUST’s event, seeing their friends and neighbors, getting in some exercise and enjoying the festivities.” In addition, now there is a way to help MUST even more. Participants are asked to establish a personal fund raising page and help raise more money to help feed, house, clothe and train the 32,000 clients a year from 8 counties who come to MUST for help and hope. For more information or to register, go to www. gobblejog.org.

COBB COUNTY OFFERS FREEDOM VOUCHER PLAN

T

ransportation is the number one obstacle for seniors in Cobb and the Atlanta region. This lack of available transportation causes a severe hardship for seniors who cannot get to essential services such as medical treatment. Approximately 19.1% of seniors 65 and over in Cobb County have mobility and/ or self-care limitations. Cobb County Department of Transportation, in partnership with Cobb Senior Services (CSS) and Cobb Community Transit (CCT), has initiated a transportation program whose focus is to provide Cobb County’s senior citizens the ability to access transportation services that are beyond what is currently available through CCT and CSS. Seniors age 60 and older who qualify for CCT Paratransit services but live outside of the CCT Paratransit service area are eligible for this program. Eligible seniors will be provided $900 in vouchers a year or $1800 a year for dialysis patients. There is a 10% co-pay for voucher books. Seniors can choose transportation which best meet their needs for medical visits, doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping and any other necessary appointments. Transportation service providers are pre-registered vendors with Cobb County. The Cobb Freedom Voucher program provides additional transportation options for seniors, improves senior mobility, and promotes personal independence. To find out if you are eligible for Cobb Freedom, call 770-528-7987 for details. www.eastcobber.com
