But I believe work as a parent, a teacher, volunteer or whatever vocation we pursue allows us to show our love for others by contributing our talents for a greater good. The poet Kahlil Gibran observed, “When you work, you fulfill a part of earth’s fondest dream assigned to you when that dream is born.” This edition of the EAST COBBER spotlights those people in our East Cobb community fulfilling their part of the “earth’s fondest dream” by working from the heart.

From Lucia McBeth starting a nonprofit and becoming a political activist (see page 10) to the members of the Big Chicken Chorus singing Valentine’s Day wishes (see page 7) to the organizers of the Amazing Grace Race (see page 54)—all are examples of East Cobbers showing their love through their work.

This edition also marks the 17th anniversary of the special section, “Child Care and Preschool Guide.” Born out of my own need for quality child care for my then preschool-aged children, I realized that other parents may be in search of those services.

After hours of research and revisions, I am proud to present not only the plethora of child care and preschools offered right here in our own backyard, but also the high caliber of child care facilities that play a vital role in the healthy development of our children. The information on pages 20-27 fulfills the EAST COBBER’s mission to provide, you, the reader, with useful information about our community.

"You are what you eat" is a motto that we see quite often this time of year as we dive into our New Year's resolutions. It is a particularly helpful reminder when faced with less than healthy choices at mealtime. Healthier standards for more nutritious food is a topic that is trending today, especially regarding our youth. In fact, it was just this past summer when the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 implemented their last phase of nutrition standards nicknamed "Smart Snacks in School" across the nation.

As a result, we have seen our local schools make positive changes for a healthier lifestyle for students while on school grounds. Our local PTAs have either started Health & Wellness committees or added more wellness events to their calendars to include Fresh Fruit Fridays or Wellness Wednesdays, as well as Morning Milers, Healthy Champions, farm to school taste tests, and incorporating school gardens into their curriculum. In addition, some of our schools have changed their primary fundraising to fitness related events such as 5K runs and added after school fitness or running clubs. Many of our teachers have implemented the NERT (Non-Edible Rewards and Treats) system in their classrooms, which is simply rewarding students with privileges instead of candy.

While our state has allowed some leniency to this new standard in regards to fundraising, nevertheless we are seeing a dedication of improving the overall health of our students, which is the ultimate goal. To extend these healthy habits outside of school, we can teach our children to read nutrition labels and to think about the fuel they are putting into their growing bodies. Going on a family hike at one of our local parks and encouraging outdoor activities that exercise the body and the mind are some simple ways to increase our fitness levels. Together we can continue this positive momentum of improving the health and wellness of our children.

East Cobber Becomes Advocate for Common Sense Gun Legislation East Cobber Lucia K. McBath is the mother of Jordan Russell Davis, who, at the tender age of 17, was shot and killed at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida on November 23, 2012. He was murdered by Michael Dunn, a middleaged software developer because he was agitated about how loud her son and his friends were playing music in their car. Their case was declared a mistrial in February 2014. ss Lucia K. McBeth The case was re-tried in September 2014 and Michael Dunn was convicted of first degree murder in Jordan’s death. Late last month, "3 1/2 Minutes" debuted at the Sundance Film Festival which, examined the death of her son, Jordan Davis. The documentary includes interviews with Davis's parents.

Thrust into the international spotlight, Lucia has turned the tragedy of losing her son into an opportunity to champion and fight for common sense gun legislation and solutions to the issue of our country’s rampant gun violence. After 30 years as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, Lucia just retired to dedicate herself fulltime to be the national spokesperson for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. In her work as a gun safety advocate, she has testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on the “Stand Your

Ground Laws: Civil Rights and Public Safety Implications of the Expanded Use of Deadly Force” as well as both Georgia and Florida state legislature committee hearings for repeal of the Stand Your Ground Law. This community activist comes from an extensive family background involving civil rights. Her father was the Illinois Branch president of the NAACP for over twenty years and served on its national board as well. As a child, she traveled with her family attending marches and rallies supporting the civil rights movement and the coalitions of organizations fighting alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2014, she was invited to the White House for President Obama’s unveiling of My Brother’s Keeper Initiatives for minority young men. In addition, she has spoken at the 2014 White House Summits on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

Ebony Magazine recognized Lucia as a community crusader/activist for the EBONY POWER 100 for 2014.

From Selma to East Cobb

By Lindsay Field A longtime East Cobb resident has decided to share his story about growing up in Selma, Alabama, and participating in the Civil Rights Movement as a teenager. The Rev. Junnus Clay is a 16-year resident of East Cobb County, working as a minister, licensed counselor and nonprofit business consultant.

Clay was only 14 years old when the first Selma ss Author, Rev. Junnus Clay to Montgomery march was attempted on March 7, 1965. He and 600 marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge — they were led by now-Georgia Congressman John Lewis and the late Hosea Williams. Clay says they were attacked, beaten and tear-gassed by Alabama State Troopers. This nationally televised event became known as “Bloody Sunday.”

“This was the most frightening day of my life, I thought I was going to die!” says Clay, adding that he also marched on other occasions and went to jail. “It was decades later before I fully understood how deeply ingrained segregation and discrimination was embedded in the South; and the high price African-Americans would have to pay for equal rights."

Clay also saw Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. on numerous occasions and heard him speak regularly at the Selma mass meetings. "I remember marching with him on two occasions — the second failed attempt to march to Montgomery and the final successful march in Montgomery to the State Capitol," he recalls.

Clay's book, “From Selma to Salvation,” chronicles his unique life journey of growing up in Selma, participating in the Civil Rights Movement, leaving Selma, his spiritual conversion through the sermon of a white southern Baptist preacher while stationed in Japan, attending seminary and returning home to Selma to start a new church. “It describes how my life came full circle, from being an activist to an evangelist,” Clay says. He started writing the book last spring; the new movie “Selma” motivated him to finish it. He has seen the movie, and thought it was very good.

“From Selma to Salvation” is scheduled to be published this month.

“Welcome Back to Shaw Park" Day Scheduled for Saturday, February 14

In 1965, two major events took place which impacted baseball fans in northeast Cobb County. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta and, on a rainy July 28th, voters approved a $900,000 recreation bond fund which was the first step in creating Shaw Park. On September 2, 1966 a check for $26,650 was handed to Mr. T.P. Shaw for purchase of 23 acres just east of Canton Road in Marietta/East Cobb. It would take almost another four years, but Shaw Park would become the first county park built solely by the Cobb County Parks & Recreation Department. The original plan was to open Shaw Park in June 1968 but matching federal funds were scarce. It wasn’t until September 27, 1968 that county commissioner Ernest Barrett finally received a government telegram confirming federal funds. By November 1968 construction was underway. But in the first 7 months, rainy weather limited crews to only 50 working days. On Saturday May 2, 1970, the Shaw Park Recreation Club (forerunner to the current Shaw Park Baseball organization) proudly hosted three games to open the Shaw Park Midget League, and one of the county’s largest athletic programs during the 1970s was off and running.

Cobb County officially dedicated Shaw Park on July 11, 1970. It was a showcase for recreation-minded people in the northern part of the county with 2 athletic fields, 2 tennis courts, a paved multi-purpose court, restrooms, playground equipment, picnic pavilion and a half-mile of nature trails. Underground electric wiring was a new feature compared to most other community parks in existence.

Now, thanks to almost one million dollars from 2011 SPLOST funds, Shaw Park has received an extreme makeover. The renovation consisted of 4 new existing ballfields—including dugouts, lights, irrigation and new fences.

Walton High School Band Performs at the 2015 Rose Bowl The nationally acclaimed, award-winning Walton High School Marching Band performed in the 126th Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1. This was the Walton High School Marching Band's third appearance in the world famous New Year's Day Parade. Walton Band previously appeared in the 2003 and 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade. The 200-member Marching Raider Band was one of only 20 bands selected to perform in the parade, and the sole Georgia ensemble. The band arrived in California on Dec. 27 and was able see some sights in between rehearsals and performances leading up to the parade. The band took a tour of Hollywood, visited the Santa Monica pier, spent a day in Disneyland and also went to Universal Studios. Walton Raiders marching band also participated in Bandfest where bands perform their field shows at Pasadena City College's Mack and Jackie Robinson Stadium. Walton Principal Judy McNeill, accompanied the band on its trip to the West Coast.

Kennesaw State Restaurant Expo to Spotlight Business Side of Owning a Restaurant The Kennesaw State University Small Business Development Center (KSU SBDC) announced its inaugural Restaurant Expo: Serving Up the Business Side Owning and Operating a Restaurant. This special event will feature keynote speaker Michael Coles, co-founder of the nationally successful Great American Cookie Company.

His entrepreneurial spirit, business acumen, philanthropy, and community leadership are an inspiration to restaurant owners and managers all over the country,” Drew Tonsmeire, Area Director of the KSU Small Business Development Center explains.

Don't You Just Love Cobb County?

By Tim Lee, Chair, Cobb County Board of Commissioners I love Cobb County. We all have a lot of reasons to love Cobb County!

That was the essence of my State of Cobb County address last month (which can be viewed on TV23: Video On Demand: Special Presentation) at the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. That's because in Cobb, we have every right to feel ss Tim Lee, Cobb County very good about a Commission Chairman number of accomplishments, from our rare, Triple-A rating (now going on 18 consecutive years), to our strong school system.

Everything our 4,500 county employees do, every day, is done to provide the best services possible to our citizens and visitors. They do what they do so you get your money's worth from the taxes you pay - still among the lowest in metro Atlanta, by the way - and so you can, frankly, brag to others about where you live!

Here's what you, as a Cobb County resident or business owner, have to brag about: • a citizenry invested in the county's future • excellent quality of life • low cost of living and/or doing business • low taxes

Cobb Chairman Tim Lee Hires a Deputy Chief Cobb Chairman Tim Lee announced last month that he will hire Kellie Anne Brownlow to serve as deputy chief to the chairman. At an annual salary of $105,000, Brownlow will manage and coordinate activities for designated projects with county staff, state and local government partners and various boards, commissions and committees to ensure Cobb County’s goals and objectives are accomplished. She will research and coordinate special projects, media inquiries and Open Records requests received in the Chairman’s Office, respond to public inquiries and represent the Chairman’s Office at various meetings, committees and speaking engagements. Brownlow began her new position on Monday, January 12.

“Our growing role in the region and constant focus on expanding Cobb’s economy demands more and more of my attention,” Lee said. “Adding Kellie to the team and having her expertise in local government as well as experience with economic development will be a key component in accomplishing more for our county.”

Brownlow brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in economic development, government relations and project management to Cobb County.

For the past three years, Brownlow has served as the economic development director for the Gwinnett Chamber and Partnership Gwinnett. In this role, she led the implementation of business recruitment,

expansion and retention strategies across five target industries.

Brownlow also has more than 11 years of experience working for the Atlanta Regional Commission; her most recent role as division chief of local government services. At ARC, she was responsible for managing relationships with elected officials, ss Kellie Anne Brownlow providing services and customized training for cities and counties in the Atlanta region. Brownlow’s team implemented the Regional Leadership Institute and LINK programs and provided consulting services to local governments in the areas of human resources, management and operations and comprehensive planning. During her tenure with the ARC, she managed the development of the first comprehensive regional economic development strategy.

Brownlow earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rhode Island College.

She is a 2013 graduate of Leadership Gwinnett and also a Regional Leadership Institute graduate.

Most of these vision impairments are quickly diagnosed and easy to treat with corrective lenses. Lions Clubs International is a service organization with over 45,500 clubs and more than 1,368,683 members in 205 countries around the world. Among the many service projects, Lions are best known for their program to recycle eyeglasses as a way to help the visually impaired. It costs Lions less than 8 cents to provide a pair of recycled eyeglasses and change someone's life.

Babies Can’t Wait Provides Early Intervention To Infants and Toddlers

Babies Can’t Wait is a statewide early intervention program for children (birth to 3 years of age) with developmental delays and their families. Babies Can’t Wait can assist families in identifying needed resources and services within our community to meet a child’s developmental needs. Agencies and individuals provide services from both the public and private sector that includes speech, occupational, physical therapy and special instruction.

BCW is established by Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) which guarantees all eligible children, regardless of their disability, access to services that will enhance their development. BCW staff and providers provide information and therapeutic services to parents about their children’s medical/developmental conditions. They train the parent to provide services to their child in the natural environment on a daily basis.

Lost & Found Rules & Regulations • Upon receipt of any domestic animal impounded, wearing a tag, the Cobb County Animal Control Division will make diligent efforts to ascertain the identity of the animal’s owner and, if identified, shall, within 24 hours of receipt, contact the owner by telephone.

It shall send notice of impoundment to the owner by mail.

• All animals impounded shall be kept at the Animal Control Center for a period of not less than 5 working days unless redeemed within that period.

• Any animal not redeemed shall be considered abandoned to the Animal Control Division, in which all rights of ownership shall vest in the Animal Control Division; and the owner shall have no further claim to such animal.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH Recipe of the Month

T

his month’s recipe was submitted by Tiffanie Abernethy, EAST COBBER’s Facebook Friday Freebie and E-newsletter Coordinator. In celebration of the Chinese New Year, to be held February 19, we asked Tiffanie to share a recipe she prepares and shares with her family for the Chinese New Year.

Tiffanie was born in Taiwan (name: Yun Chun Cheng) and moved to United States with her parents and older brother when she was 2 years old. She attended Kincaid Elementary School, then Simpson Middle School, and graduated from Sprayberry High School in 2003. A graduate of Kennesaw State University, Tiffanie lives in East Cobb with her husband, Chase, and 2 children: Laina, 5; and, Charlie, 2.

Here is her family’s recipe for making Nian Gao (Chinese New Year Cake). In Chinese, Nian Gao sounds like "getting higher year by year". In Chinese people's mind, the higher you are, the more prosperous your business is. “Nian gao” means year cake, but gao sounds the same as the word for “tall” or “high”. Hence, the cakes symbolize achieving new heights in the coming year. Here’s to a prosperous new (Chinese) year!

Nian Gao: Chinese New year’s Cake Ingredients: 3 eggs 2 cups brown sugar 3 cups glutinous rice four 2 1/2 cups milk 1 tablespoon vanilla 1/2 cup chopped dates 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/3 vegetable oil Cooking spray or a stick of butter/margarine Sesame seeds

Directions: 1. Preheat the oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Lightly grease a tube or pan with cooking spray or a little butter (or margarine).

3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the eggs and sugar.

4. Slowly stir in the rice flour and milk. Mix the ingredients until they are completely blended.

5. Next, slowly add the vanilla, dates, baking soda and vegetable oil.

6. Pour the mixture into the greased pan and bake for fifty minutes.

7. Allow the cake to cool fifteen minutes before removing it from the pan.

8. Finally, sprinkle the top with sesame seeds.

Share with twelve to sixteen people while you welcome the New Year.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Bringing Awareness to Ovarian Cancer is a Personal Quest for East Cobb Resident Back on April 25, 2002, Kelly Klanian Williams, who is now a Cobb County resident, found herself battling a dreadful disease at the young age of 21 while working on a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Virginia. Williams who had hardly ever suffered even a sniffle and had no family history of cancer received a shocking diagnosis when she was told she ss Kelly Klanian had stage 1a ovarian cancer. And according to the National Cancer Institute, ovarian cancer occurs in just three out of every 100,000 women between the ages of 20 and 24. What are the odds with her age and no family history?!

Research Fund’s (OCRF) Ovarian Cycle Ride to Change the Future® which began over ten years ago in memory of Debbie Green Flamm, who succumbed to the disease at age 43. A decade later, thousands across at least 10 major U.S. cities have ridden in support of the cause, raising more than $2.1 million to fund scientific research.

Earlier in the year before the diagnosis, Williams had ignored what might have been normal signs of weight gain, missed menstrual periods and other symptoms that something was horribly wrong with her body. She was busily immersed in her studies and just wanted to focus on school. What ended up being a “strange weight gain” ended up being an 8 pound cancerous tumor removed by her doctors, followed by four rounds of chemotherapy, loss of hair, and many days she was too weak to get out of bed. Today, thirteen years later, Williams is cancer free, recently married and looks forward to the possibility of having a house full of children.

Williams stated to a reporter once that “On my refrigerator I have a bucket list — things I would like to accomplish before I die, or ‘kick the bucket.’” The first thing on her list is “cure cancer.” She is thankful for those researchers before her who were willing to go that extra mile and find something that might help her live so she wants to give back to others so they a have the same opportunity.

On March 7, Williams would like to encourage others to join her at the Midtown Athletic Club from 9 AM – 3 PM to cycle in a six-hour indoor cycling event raising money for much-needed ovarian cancer research located at 135 Interstate North Parkway NW, Atlanta, GA 30339.

Participants in OCRF’s Ovarian Cycle Ride to Change the Future pedal toward a healthier body while simultaneously raising money for this worthy cause.

Ovarian Cycle was launched in Atlanta in 2004 and in 2012 became a signature event of OCRF, the oldest and largest charity in the U.S. funding ovarian cancer research. With annual cycling fundraisers now scheduled in at least 10 major U.S. cities, to date Ovarian Cycle has raised more than $2.1 million to fund scientific research on ovarian cancer.

“As this exhilarating fundraising event continually expands and gets stronger, it helps bring us closer to the day women will no longer need to be worried about ovarian cancer,” says Bethany Diamond, founder of Ovarian Cycle. “Since day one, Atlantans have set an example with their outstanding dedication to this cause, which is helping fund some remarkable research in the fight against this dreadful disease.”

(The fee is waived for ovarian cancer survivors.) County citizens, there is now a Cobb Elder Abuse Task Force (CEATF), which is a multi-jurisdictional organization that addresses financial, physical, and institutional senior abuse.

What is elder abuse? According to Georgia law, it is any intentional or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person who causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult. It includes financial exploitation; neglect; self-neglect; abandonment; and physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

Statistics provided through the National Center on Elder Abuse reveal that those 65 and older comprise 13 percent of our population, with that number growing exponentially every year. Approximately 9.5 percent of our elderly population will experience some form of abuse. However, the alarming statistic is that studies estimate only one in 14 cases is reported to authorities.

“This is a society problem,” says East Cobber Joe Gavalis, a CEATF coordinator/volunteer. “We all have a responsibility to become more aware of protecting our seniors. Sadly, abusers can be family members, friends, or trusted caregivers.”

As a retired federal agent, Gavalis was aware of how other states handled elder abuse reporting.

Combining his firsthand knowledge with activity already in motion through the Cobb Neighborhood Safety Commission, CEATF was organized in early 2013. The task force is a collaborative effort of around 40-plus county, state, and federal organizations (Cobb city police departments, Cobb Senior Services, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Adult Protection Services, and the Social Security Administration to name just a few), local financial institutions, and the YMCA. The group’s focus is to educate citizens and business communities about elder abuse, as well as enforce and recommend laws. Vic Reynolds, Cobb County’s District Attorney, serves as the task force chairman and is a regular speaker for Cobb groups, such as churches, civic organizations, senior living facilities, and neighborhood organizations, conducting seminars to educate people about the warning signs of elder abuse and how to report it.

CEATF focuses on three major aspects of abuse: financial, physical, and institutional. Although national statistics list neglect and physical abuse at the top of the list, task force members say that about 70 percent of Cobb’s elder abuse is financial. This abuse involves activities like improper use of a power of attorney; telephone, email, or door-to-door solicitations; or scams, such as fraudulent investing.

Already making a difference in the community, the task force worked closely with State Representative Sharon Cooper to develop legislation that toughens penalties for operating an unlicensed personal care home, raising the first offense to a felony from a misdemeanor. This law was passed in 2014.

The Amazing Grace Race To Be Held February 14 Not one but two little girls’ road to recovery is no longer just a metaphor. On Saturday, February 14, Mt Bethel United Methodist Church will host the inaugural 5K Run/ Walk named The Amazing Grace Race to raise money for two East Cobb young girls battling cancer.

Grace Bunke is an awe-inspiring, 11-year-old girl with a special love for running. On August 1, 2014, after months of knee pain and physical therapy, Grace was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. She has had amputation surgery of her lower leg and is undergoing constant chemotherapy.

After she becomes the victor in her battle with cancer, Grace dreams of running again with her sister. She prays to get the best and fastest prosthetic leg ss Grace Bunke so she can fulfill her dreams.

Grace Detling is a vivacious 6-year-old girl that loves to create masterpieces, play soccer and be with friends. After an unlikely run in with a dog in which Grace required stitches, doctors noticed a focusing issue with one of her eyes. On July 25, 2014, Grace was diagnosed with a slow growing, inoperable brain tumor. While undergoing a combination of pill form chemotherapy and IV chemo therapy, Grace continues to attend school, drama and church. She remains positive and upbeat through her battle with cancer and is learning to view the world without ss Grace Detling peripheral vision.
